The spray characteristics of a gas-centered shear coaxial injector under different conditions and recess ratios (RR) were studied through experiments and numerical simulations. The numerical study was carried out based on the coupled level set and volume-of-fluid (CLSVOF) method and the adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) method. The results indicated that without recess, the spray angle first stayed almost constant and then dropped linearly with an increase in the gas mass flow rate (m˙g) when holding the liquid mass flow rate (m˙l) constant. In contrast, with recess, the spray angle was found to increase with m˙g, which could be attributed to the secondary expansion of the central gas flow. Under specific conditions, self-pulsation occurred and was accompanied by a loud scream. The frequency of the self-pulsation increased with both m˙g and m˙l. Moreover, the self-pulsation frequency decreased with RR. Meanwhile, the mechanism of self-pulsation was initially explored through numerical simulation. It was concluded that self-pulsation was caused by the surface tension and the pressure difference between the inside and outside of the liquid sheet, together with the central airflow impact extrusion.

This study numerically investigated the thermoacoustic combustion instability characteristics of a scaled rocket combustor based on a hybrid of the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes and large–eddy simulation method. The turbulence–combustion interactions were treated using flamelet generated manifold approach. An unstable case was simulated with detailed reaction mechanisms (GRI-Mech 3.0). The obtained results agree well with experiment data from Purdue University, in terms of pressure oscillations frequency and power spectral density spectrum. The combustion instability mode was identified to be coupled with the first longitudinal acoustic mode of the combustion chamber by dynamic model decomposition method. According to Rayleigh index analysis, the unstable driving source was found to be located near the combustor step, which was further confirmed by time-averaged flow fields. Detailed three-dimensional vortex ring shedding evolutions at the combustor step were tracked with fine time resolution. Results indicate that the combustion instability arises from periodic vortex ring shedding at the combustor step and interacting with the chamber wall. The unburnt reactants were rolled up by the shedding vortex ring, which would not break up until impact with the chamber wall. Therefore, the mixing performance was significantly enhanced, leading to sudden heat release. Consequently, the thermal energy is added to the acoustic field, and the first longitudinal mode is thus reinforced, giving rise to large amplitude axial velocity oscillations which prompt the generation of the new vortex ring. The results of the present investigation will support the design and development of high-performance rocket engines.

A dielectric barrier discharge plasma controlled diffusion flame experimental system was built based on the designed coaxial swirling plasma injector. The air plasma was generated within the annulus gap of the injector by alternating current dielectric barrier discharge. The discharge characteristics and power of plasma injector under different actuation intensities and air flowrates were measured. Through the measurement techniques, such as schlieren imaging, broadband chemiluminescence image and CH* chemiluminescence, the effect and mechanism of plasma on ethylene-air normal diffusive jet and flame was explored. The results showed that a large number of filamentary discharge channels are formed in air plasma. The increase of air flowrates weakened the intensity of discharge to a certain extent. The induced jet generated by the plasma can short the laminar length of the ethylene-air jet, accelerate the transition of the flow jet, enhance the turbulence and the mixing of the fuel and the oxidizer. The higher the actuation intensity, the shorter distance of the cold jet transition zone, the higher the jet turbulence. Depending on the aerodynamic and kinetic effects, plasma can improve the stability of ethylene-air diffusive flame and reduce the lift height between the flame root and injector. The plasma can also expand the flammability limit of ethylene-air flame and make the flame ignited under some conditions that could not be. In addition, the CH* chemiluminescence shows that, in a certain range of discharge voltage, the heat release distribution can be changed on both sides of the flame, and its representative length are generally reduced as the voltage rises. On the contrary, the overtop voltage could lead to a decrease of flame heat release.

The response characteristics of the bi-swirl coaxial injector under oscillating backpressure were investigated numerically based on coupled level-set and volume of fluid model. The backpressure oscillation frequency was set ranging from 1000 to 5000 Hz. The frequency and amplitude response characteristics of liquid films were analyzed under different injection conditions. The amplitude of the pressure response inside the injector was determined by the acoustic damping of the system. Due to the central gas core inside the inner injector, the inner injector manifold was found to be more sensitive to the backpressure oscillation. The frequency characteristic of the liquid film response indicated the presence of the characteristic frequency where the response amplitude was maximum. This characteristic frequency was linearly positively correlated with the mass flow rate of the inner injector, while the flow in the outer injector could suppress the response amplitude of liquid films. Meanwhile, the nonlinearity of the response was dominated by the inner liquid film and was also the strongest at the frequency with the highest response amplitude. The simulated flow fields showed that the oscillation of the ambient airflow periodically hindered the liquid film, leading to Klystron effect. Finally, it was suggested that the characteristic frequency was related to the axial velocity of the inner liquid film at the injector outlet and the acoustic length of the gas core. Effects of secondary gas injection on flame shape and combustion stability of a premixed swirl methane/air flame were investigated experimentally. Without secondary gas injection, an attached M-shaped flame was observed with pressure oscillations up to a sound pressure level of 68 dB. The flame exhibited significant oscillations due to flame–vortex interactions induced by velocity fluctuations. The secondary methane or air was separately injected into the outer recirculation zone to suppress the flame oscillations at a volume flow rate of 0.5% of the primary flow rates. For lower primary air flow rates ( Q air ≤ 60 L/min), both secondary methane and air injections were able to suppress the thermoacoustic instability and performed the sound pressure level reduction of 45 dB. Meanwhile, the flame transformed from an attached unstable M-shaped flame to a detached stable V-shaped flame. The secondary methane or air injection served to stabilize the flame and anchor its spatial heat release distribution by limiting the variation of flame shape in the outer recirculation zone, suppressing thermoacoustic oscillation. For higher primary air flow rates ( Q air = 80 L/min), the secondary methane injection could reduce sound pressure levels to noise levels, while secondary air injection could not. The velocity disturbances and heat release fluctuations introduced by secondary methane injection could lead to a transformation in flame shape and achieve the suppression of thermoacoustic oscillation. Thermoacoustic instability (TAI) presents a critical challenge for lean-burning combustors and rocket engines. The early detection of instability is crucial, and to address this, a data-driven prediction framework has been established for TAI in a sub-scale rocket combustor with variable chamber length. Nonlinear combustion features are generated from time series of dynamic pressure using recurrence matrices. Deep learning models are then utilized to train these features and predict the proximity of impending TAI. The performance of the proposed method is investigated through cross-validations of 12 groups of hot-fire test datasets. Remarkably, the prediction performances are in good agreement with measured experimental data, with most instabilities being predicted dozens of milliseconds in advance. This capability paves the way for the early implementation of active control systems in full-scale combustors in the future. Compared to the continuous mode of a high-frequency alternating current (HFAC) source, the burst mode is believed to be capable of controlling flow and combustion while saving discharge energy. Thus, the effect of burst mode on plasma-assisted flame stabilization, which is driven by an HFAC source, is investigated based on a plasma manipulation diffusion flame experiment system. A specially designed injector with a coaxial dielectric barrier discharge configuration is used to generate a methane-air diffusion flame and air plasma. The influence of the actuating parameters of the burst mode on plasma flame stabilization and the discharge power consumption are studied. The results show that the plasma injector has the typical volt–ampere characteristics of dielectric barrier discharge. The discharge clearly exhibits regular unsteady operation characteristics when the source is in burst mode. Two flame stability thresholds are found with increasing discharge voltage. According to the first and second flame stability threshold values and the flame pattern, raising the control frequency and the duty cycle is favorable for flame stabilization. However, for a fixed duty cycle of 50%, because the time scale of the actuator-off duration is longer than that of combustion, when the control frequency is too low, the flame cannot be stabilized even though the applied voltage is very high. For a fixed control frequency of 100 Hz, the flame is also difficult to stabilize when the duty cycle is too small. Mainly due to the unsteady gasdynamic effects of plasma in the burst mode, this approach can achieve the same flame stabilization effect as that of the continuous mode while reducing the energy consumption. The cost-effectiveness ratios of the two optimum actuation schemes are only 6.4% and 10.1%. In addition, the burst mode is better than the continuous mode in avoiding undesirable arc discharge. To better stabilize the flame while maintaining a relatively low cost-effectiveness ratio, actuator setting schemes with high frequency and a small duty cycle should be selected. This study presented the numerical simulation of the tangential combustion instability in a hypergolic liquid bipropellant rocket thrust chamber, which applied fuel liquid film cooling method and unlike impinging injectors. The liquid spray was modeled using Lagrangian approach, while the gas was regarded as Euler phase. Stress-blended eddy simulation and finite rate/eddy–dissipation model were adopted to simulate the turbulent combustion process. Consistent with the experiment results, this work successfully simulated the transformation of tangential combustion instability from standing mode to spinning mode. The mean pressure, amplitude and frequency of limit cycle oscillation were in good agreement with the experiment. There was a detailed analysis about the flow field, Rayleigh index, and driving mechanism of the combustion instability. It was found that the oscillation began with hot spots of heat release rate due to the interaction between the spray of impinging injectors and cooling fuel jet. More than that, cooling fuel jet also contributed to drive the oscillation. In the standing mode, injectors in the inner and outer rings drive the oscillation together, while the spinning mode is mainly driven by injectors in the outer ring. The pressure wave is subsonic and its Mach number is close to 1. It was shown that the pressure wave contained a complex structure divided into three parts. This led to the in-phase of the pressure along the axial direction and the double-peak characteristic of the downstream pressure signal. Besides, a positive feedback closed-loop system associated with periodic oxidizer/fuel ratio was believed to sustain the combustion instability. The oscillation can be maintained when pressure, heat release and oxidizer/fuel ratio are coupled together. Two-phase rotating detonation ramjets are considered to be suitable for aerospace applications due to their high thermodynamic cycle efficiency. These engines have an extremely complex internal flow field, in which the liquid fuel undergoes physical and chemical processes such as fragmentation, evaporation, mixing, and combustion; these processes also interact with detonation waves that have significant gradients. This makes it difficult to simulate a three-dimensional (3D) full-process rotating detonation combustion chamber. Here, based on the Euler–Lagrangian simulation method, a 3D numerical combustion chamber was simulated using kinetic theory and the constant thermal physical property parameter (TPPP) calculation method. The accuracy of these methods was then compared with the existing experimental results and theoretical values. Calculating the TPPPs using kinetic theory brought about a relatively high-pressure peak and detonation wave temperature; the detonation wave profile was also finer and more precise. The detonation wave propagation velocity of the two-phase detonation is estimated to be about 60% of the theoretical gas-phase CJ velocity. The calculation method of physical parameters has relatively little influence on the engine's operating frequency and the detonation wave's propagation velocity but has a more significant influence on the peak pressure. Constant TPPPs can be used when the Kelvin–Helmholtz–Rayleigh–Taylor model with insufficient precision is used to consider the breakup of droplets and leads to the acceleration of the propagation speed of two-phase detonation waves.
