Abstract The enzyme glutamine synthetase (GLN) is mainly responsible for the assimilation and reassimilation of nitrogen (N) in higher plants. Although the GLN gene has been identified in various plants, there is little information about the GLN family in cotton (Gossypium spp.). To elucidate the roles of GLN genes in cotton, we systematically investigated and characterized the GLN gene family across four cotton species (G. raimondii, G. arboreum, G. hirsutum, and G. barbadense). Our analysis encompassed analysis of members, gene structure, cis-element, intragenomic duplication, and exploration of collinear relationships. Gene duplication analysis indicated that segmental duplication was the primary driving force for the expansion of the GhGLN gene family. Transcriptomic and quantitative real-time reverse-transcription PCR (qRT-PCR) analyses indicated that the GhGLN1.1a gene is responsive to N induction treatment and several abiotic stresses. The results of virus-induced gene silencing revealed that the accumulation and N use efficiency (NUE) of cotton were affected by the inactivation of GhGLN1.1a. This study comprehensively analyzed the GhGLN genes in Gossypium spp., and provides a new perspective on the functional roles of GhGLN1.1a in regulating NUE in cotton.

BackgroundThere is increasing focus on HIV-1 CRF55_01B in China. However, there is limited information regarding the dissemination of CRF55_01B across different regions and populations in Guangxi. This study was performed to elucidate the evolutionary history of the introduction and dissemination of CRF55_01B in Guangxi.MethodsMolecular network and phylogenetic analyses were used to investigate the transmission characteristics of CRF55_01B in China. The analyses particularly focused on the cross-provincial spatial and temporal transmission patterns between Guangdong Province and Guangxi, as well as the transmission dynamics among different regions and populations within Guangxi.ResultsIn total, 2226 partial pol sequences of CRF55_01B strains sampled from 2007 to 2022 were collected, including 1895 (85.09%) sequences from Guangdong, 199 (8.94%) sequences from Guangxi, and 172 (7.59%) sequences from other provinces of China. Most people living with HIV in Guangxi were infected with HIV-1 through heterosexuals (52.76%). Among these, 19.10% had a history of commercial heterosexual contact (CHC) and 15.58% had a history of non-marital non-commercial heterosexual contact (NMNCHC). Overall, 1418 sequences were identified in the molecular network. Notably, the sequences from Guangdong Province were most closely linked to those from Guangxi. Phylogenetic analysis showed that CRF55_01B was first introduced from Shenzhen City to Nanning City around 2007. Subsequently, CRF55_01B established local transmission within Guangxi, with Nanning City serving as the transmission center from 2008 to 2017. After 2017, the CRF55_01B strain spread to other regions of Guangxi. Men who have sex with men (MSM) and men with a history of CHC have played a significant role in the transmission of CRF55_01B among different populations in Guangxi.ConclusionsThis study provides evidence on the transmission trajectory of CRF55_01B among different regions and populations in Guangxi. Given the bridging role of men with a history of CHC in the dissemination of CRF55_01B from MSM to the general population, it is imperative to enhance surveillance among key populations to mitigate the secondary transmission of HIV-1.

The stimulator of interferon genes (STING), an integral adaptor protein in the DNA-sensing pathway, plays a pivotal role in the innate immune response against infections. Additionally, it presents a valuable therapeutic target for infectious diseases and cancer. We observed that fangchinoline (Fan), a bis-benzylisoquinoline alkaloid (BBA), effectively impedes the replication of vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV), encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV), influenza A virus (H1N1), and herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1) in vitro. Fan treatment significantly reduced the viral load, attenuated tissue inflammation, and improved survival in a viral sepsis mouse model. Mechanistically, Fan activates the antiviral response in a STING-dependent manner, leading to increased expression of interferon (IFN) and interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs) for potent antiviral effects in vivo and in vitro. Notably, Fan interacts with STING, preventing its degradation and thereby extending the activation of IFN-based antiviral responses. Collectively, our findings highlight the potential of Fan, which elicits antiviral immunity by suppressing STING degradation, as a promising candidate for antiviral therapy.

Salinity stress can significantly impact productivity in agricultural area with limited water re-sources. Our study focused on how plants under salt stress respond to phosphorus availability in terms of growth and biochemical reactions in cotton genotypes. Two cotton genotypes with different P efficiencies (SK39 and JM21) were used in a hydroponic experiment with 300 mM NaCl and three P treatments (10, 20, and 30 mM). Salinity stress decreases root growth, shoot growth, biomass production, and chlorophyll content, according to the experimental findings. In treated plants, it also increased the levels of oxidative stress. However, this effect was alleviated by phosphorus therapy, which controlled the production of proline, total soluble sugars, and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Interestingly, salt-sensitive JM21 responded to phosphorus supplementation more favorably than salt-tolerant SK39. Our research emphasizes the critical role that phosphorus especially P20 plays increasing the salinity stress sensitivity of cotton plants and offers insightful in-formation on the mechanisms underlying the role of phosphorus in reducing salinity stress effects. This study also revealed interspecific variability in cotton genotypes and characteristics, primarily represented by attributes related to cotton growth and morphological indicators such as dry matter biomass.

BackgroundThe May 2022 global outbreak of monkeypox (MPX) poses a threat to the health of men who have sex with men. However, there is limited data on the willingness of MSM to receive monkeypox vaccination in Southern China. This study aimed to assess the knowledge of MPX, concerns regarding MPX, and willingness to receive monkeypox vaccination, as well as their correlates, among MSM in China.MethodsWe conducted a Web-based online survey of MSM in Southern China from August to September 2022. Data were collected on the socio-demographic characteristics, knowledge, worries, concerns regarding MPX and willingness to receive monkeypox vaccination. Multivariate logistic regression was employed to explore the factors associated with willingness to receive monkeypox vaccination.ResultsA total of 1903 participants completed the survey. Among them, approximately 69.9% reported being aware of MPX awareness, 94.1% of the participants supported the promotion of monkeypox vaccination. The majority of participants (91.4%) expressed their willingness to receive monkeypox vaccination. Participants who considered monkeypox vaccination safe [adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 4.82, 95% CI: 1.35–17.18], agreed on the necessity of government promotion of monkeypox vaccination in China (aOR = 6.03, 95% CI: 1.07–33.93), believed in prioritizing monkeypox vaccination for MSM (aOR = 5.01, 95% CI: 1.10–22.71), and had friends or sexual partners who had already received the monkeypox or smallpox vaccination (aOR = 10.37, 95% CI: 2.11–50.99) are more likely to be vaccinated. Conversely, married individuals (aOR = 0.13, 95% CI: 0.03–0.47), those engaging in anal sex 4–6 times per week in the past 3 months (aOR = 0.26, 95% CI: 0.09–0.77) expressed hesitancy toward monkeypox vaccination.ConclusionThere was a high willingness to receive monkeypox vaccination among MSM in China. The hesitancy toward the monkeypox vaccine can be effectively mitigated by addressing concerns about its safety and potential adverse reactions. Moreover, increasing acceptance of the monkeypox vaccination among MSM and their peers is crucial, as social influence significantly impacts vaccine attitudes and behaviors.

BackgroundThe burden of depression symptoms has increased among individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2 during COVID-19 pandemic. However, the prevalence and associated factors of depressive symptoms among individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2 remain uncertain after optimizing the COVID-19 response in China.MethodsAn online cross-sectional survey was conducted among the public from January 6 to 30, 2023, using a convenience sampling method. Sociodemographic and COVID-19 pandemic-related factors were collected. The depression symptoms were assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Logistic regression analysis was performed to explore the associated factors with depressive symptoms.ResultsA total of 2,726 participants completed the survey. The prevalence of depression symptoms was 35.3%. About 58% of the participants reported experiencing insufficient drug supply. More than 40% of participants reported that they had missed healthcare appointments or delayed treatment. One-third of participants responded experiencing a shortage of healthcare staff and a long waiting time during medical treatment. Logistic regression analysis revealed several factors that were associated with depression symptoms, including sleep difficulties (OR, 2.84; 95% CI, 2.34–3.44), chronic diseases (OR, 2.15; 95% CI, 1.64–2.82), inpatient treatment for COVID-19 (OR, 3.24; 95% CI, 2.19–4.77), with COVID-19 symptoms more than 13 days (OR, 1.30, 95% CI 1.04–1.63), re-infection with SARS-CoV-2 (OR, 1.52; 95% CI, 1.07–2.15), and the increased in demand for healthcare services (OR, 1.32; 95% CI, 1.08–1.61).ConclusionThis study reveals a moderate prevalence of depression symptoms among individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2. The findings underscore the importance of continued focus on depressive symptoms among vulnerable individuals, including those with sleeping difficulties, chronic diseases, and inpatient treatment for COVID-19. It is necessary to provide mental health services and psychological interventions for these vulnerable groups during the COVID-19 epidemic.

Abstract Background Data on recent human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis C virus (HCV) and syphilis prevalence among drug users in the Southwest China are sparse despite the high burden of drug use. This study aims at assessing the prevalence trends and related factors of HIV, HCV and syphilis infection among different drug users in the China–Vietnam border area. Methods A continuous cross-sectional survey was conducted among drug users from 2010 to 2020 in the China–Vietnam border area. Chi-square trend tests were used to assess the trend of HIV, HCV and syphilis prevalence and the proportion for drug type used by drug users. Multivariate logistic regression was used to identify associated factors of HIV, HCV and syphilis infection in different drug users. Results In this study, a total of 28,951 drug users were included, of which 27,893 (96.45%) male, 15,660 (54.09%) aged 13–34 years, 24,543 (84.77%) heroin-only users, 2062 (7.12%) synthetic drug-only (SD-only) users and 2346 (8.10%) poly-drug users. From 2010 to 2020, the proportion of heroin-only users decreased from 87.79% to 75.46%, whereas SD-only users and poly-drug users increased from 5.16% to 16.03%, and from 7.05% to 8.52%, respectively. The prevalence of HIV, HCV, and syphilis during the study period declined from 12.76%, 60.37% and 5.72% to 4.35%, 53.29% and 4.53%, respectively, among heroin-only users and declined from 18.30%, 66.67% and 15.69% to 6.95%, 27.81% and 5.35%, respectively, among poly-drug users; however, the prevalence of HIV and HCV among SD-only users increased from 0.89% and 8.93% to 2.84% and 18.75%, respectively. Having ever injected drugs and needle sharing were common associated factors for both HIV and HCV infection among poly-drug users and heroin-only users. Aged ≥ 35 years old was an associated factor for HIV, HCV and syphilis infection among the SD-only users. Female drug users were at high risk of contracting syphilis among three different drug users. Conclusions The prevalence of HIV, HCV and syphilis among heroin-only users and poly-drug users decreased during the study period. However, the prevalence of HIV and HCV among SD-only users increased. Comprehensive intervention strategies, particularly focusing on the SD-only users are needed in order to bring down the disease burden in this population in the China–Vietnam border areas.

Abstract Background The prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is becoming more common among college students in China. However, latest data on the prevalence and correlates of HIV testing among sexually experienced college students is rarely. Methods An online survey was conducted among college students aged 18 years or older using multistage stratified cluster sampling from 16 colleges. Data on socio-demographic, HIV testing, HIV-related awareness, attitudes, sexual education and behaviors were collected. Propensity score matching (PSM) and logistic regression model were used to identify factors associated with HIV testing. Result A total of 108,987 students participated the survey, of which 13,201 sexually experienced college students were included in this study. 1,939 (14.69%) college students with sexual experience reported uptake of HIV testing in the preceding year. The uptake of HIV testing increased for college students with a rising HIV knowledge score and sexual health knowledge. Being awareness of HIV-related knowledge (aOR = 1.15, 95%CI: 1.01–1.30), accepting one-night stands (aOR = 1.16, 95%CI:1.03–1.32), obtaining satisfactory sexual interpretation from parent(s) (aOR = 1.24, 95%CI: 1.07–1.43), ever had unintended pregnancy (aOR = 1.78, 95%CI: 1.32–2.38), ever had received HIV-related preventive service(s) (aOR = 1.37, 95%CI: 1.10–1.70), ever had participated HIV-related preventive services (aOR = 3.76, 95%CI: 2.99–4.75) and ever had anal sex (aOR = 2.66, 95%CI: 2.11–3.34) were positively associated with uptake of HIV testing. However, accepting premarital sex (aOR = 0.76, 95%CI: 0.66–0.88), accepting cohabitation (aOR = 0.75, 95%CI: 0.61–0.92), occasionally discussing sex with parent(s) (aOR = 0.68, 95%CI: 0.50–0.91), and being with moderate satisfaction of school sex courses (aOR = 0.74, 95%CI: 0.58–0.95) were negatively associated with uptake of HIV testing. Conclusion The prevalence of HIV testing was relatively low. Participation in HIV-related services and high-risk sexual behaviors were important enablers for testing. Improving sex education for students, increasing HIV preventive services on campus, and improving family sex education are necessary to increase HIV testing among college sexually experienced students.

Abstract The vehicle detection algorithm based on visual perception has been applied in all types of automatic driving scenes. However, there are still flaws in the current detection algorithm model, especially for small objects. The detection effect of vehicle objects with small pixels in the image is often missed and wrongly detected. This research proposes an improved feature fusion module based on double‐channel residual pyramid (DRP) structure for autonomous detection algorithm which named binary residual feature pyramid network (BiResFPN) to solve the above problems. Firstly, a DRP structure, which can effectively supplement the shallow information of the network, is proposed. The residual structure is added to the output feature map for further supplement. Then, an average sampling method of positive and negative samples based on intersection‐over‐union (IOU) value is proposed on the basis of this structure, aimed at the unbalanced sampling of positive and negative samples in the training stage of faster regions with CNN features (RCNN). It leads to the reduction of the interference of a large number of simple negative samples, which makes the learned model better. The experimental results based on the KITTI and BDD100K dataset datasets show that the capability of the feature fusion module based on DRP structure is strong for small object detection. Compared with Faster‐RCNN (FPN), the detection algorithm of small object detection accuracy APsmall was increased by 2.6%, APmedium and APlarge was increased by 1.1% and 0.3%.

IntroductionPlants that display heteroblasty possess conspicuous variations in leaf morphology between their juvenile and adult phases, with certain species retaining juvenile-like leaves even in adulthood. Nevertheless, the ecological advantages of maintaining two or more distinct leaf types in heteroblastic plants at the adult stage remain unclear.MethodThe aim of this study is to examine the adaptive significance of heteroblastic leaves sampled from branches with divergent functions (sterile and fertile branches) of mature Ficus pumila individuals by comparing their morphological, anatomical, and physiological characteristics.ResultLeaves on sterile branches (LSs) exhibited a significantly larger specific leaf area, thinner palisade and spongy tissues, lower chlorophyll contents, and lower light saturation points than leaves on fertile branches (LFs). These results demonstrate that LSs are better adapted to low light environments, while LFs are well equipped to take advantages of high light conditions. However, both LFs and LSs have a low light compensation point with no significant difference between them, indicating that they start to accumulate photosynthetic products under similar light conditions. Interestingly, significant higher net photosynthetic rate was detected in LFs, showing they have higher photosynthetic capacity. Furthermore, LFs produced significant more nutrients compared to LSs, which may associate to their ability of accumulating more photosynthetic products under full light conditions and higher photosynthetic capacity.DiscussionOverall, we observed a pattern of divergence in morphological features of leaves on two functional branches. Anatomical and physiological features indicate that LFs have an advantage in varied light conditions, providing amounts of photosynthetic products to support the sexual reproduction, while LSs adapt to low light environments. Our findings provide evidence that heteroblasty facilitates F. pumila to utilize varying light environments, likely associated with its growth form as a climbing plant. This strategy allows the plant to allocate resources more effectively and optimize its overall fitness.

This study aimed to investigate the long-term biocompatibility, safety, and degradation of the ultrathin nitrided iron bioresorbable scaffold (BRS) in vivo, encompassing the whole process of bioresorption in porcine coronary arteries. Fifty-two nitrided iron scaffolds (strut thickness of 70 μm) and 28 Vision Co–Cr stents were randomly implanted into coronary arteries of healthy mini-swine. The efficacy and safety of the nitrided iron scaffold were comparable with those of the Vision stentwithin 52 weeks after implantation. In addition, the long-term biocompatibility, safety, and bioresorption of the nitrided iron scaffold were evaluated by coronary angiography, optical coherence tomography, micro-computed tomography, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectrometry and histopathological evaluations at 4, 12, 26, 52 weeks and even at 7 years after implantation. In particular, a large number of struts were almost completely absorbed in situ at 7 years follow-up, which were first illustrated in this study. The lymphatic drainage pathway might serve as the potential clearance way of iron and its corrosion products.

As a fundamental computer vision task, instance segmentation is widely used in the field of autonomous driving because it can perform both instance-level distinction and pixel-level segmentation. We propose CompleteInst based on QueryInst as a solution to the problems of missed detection with a network structure designed from the feature level and the instance level. At the feature level, we propose Global Pyramid Networks (GPN) to collect global information of missed instances. Then, we introduce the semantic branch to complete the semantic features of the missed instances. At the instance level, we implement the query-based optimal transport assignment (OTA-Query) sample allocation strategy which enhances the quality of positive samples of missed instances. Both the semantic branch and OTA-Query are parallel, meaning that there is no interference between stages, and they are compatible with the parallel supervision mechanism of QueryInst. We also compare their performance to that of non-parallel structures, highlighting the superiority of the proposed parallel structure. Experiments were conducted on the Cityscapes and COCO dataset, and the recall of CompleteInst reached 56.7% and 54.2%, a 3.5% and 3.2% improvement over the baseline, outperforming other methods.

The objective of vehicle search is to locate and identify vehicles in uncropped, real-world images, which is the combination of two tasks: vehicle detection and re-identification (Re-ID). As an emerging research topic, vehicle search plays a significant role in the perception of cooperative autonomous vehicles and road driving in the distant future and has become a trend in the future development of intelligent driving. However, there is no suitable dataset for this study. The Tsinghua University DAIR-V2X dataset is utilized to create the first cross-camera vehicle search dataset, DAIR-V2XSearch, which combines the cameras at both ends of the vehicle and the road in real-world scenes. The primary purpose of the current search network is to address the pedestrian issue. Due to varying task scenarios, it is necessary to re-establish the network in order to resolve the problem of vast differences in different perspectives caused by vehicle searches. A phased feature extraction network (PFE-Net) is proposed as a solution to the cross-camera vehicle search problem. Initially, the anchor-free YOLOX framework is selected as the backbone network, which not only improves the network’s performance but also eliminates the fuzzy situation in which multiple anchor boxes correspond to a single vehicle ID in the Re-ID branch. Second, for the vehicle Re-ID branch, a camera grouping module is proposed to effectively address issues such as sudden changes in perspective and disparities in shooting under different cameras. Finally, a cross-level feature fusion module is designed to enhance the model’s ability to extract subtle vehicle features and the Re-ID’s precision. Experiments demonstrate that our proposed PFE-Net achieves the highest precision in the DAIR-V2XSearch dataset.

In order to improve the reducing sugar content and antioxidant capacity of Auricularia auricula, thus providing new insight into the development and utilization of Auricularia auricula-based products, in this paper, the Auriculari aauricula pulp was subjected to the joint treatment of enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation. Cellulase, pectinase or the combination of the two enzymes were used to hydrolyze the Auricularia auricula pulp, which was then co-fermented by Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus fermentum alone or in combination. Single-factor experiments involving the material to liquid ratio, the amount of enzyme used, zymolysis time, temperature and pH were optimized using reducing sugar content as criteria. And the effects of inoculum amount, the fermentation temperature and time of the fungus zymolysis liquid on the 1,1-Diphenyl-2-trinitrophenylhydrazine (DPPH) radical scavenge rate were optimized, and finally the response surface experiment was used to determine the optimal parameters for Auricularia auricula fermentation. The results showed that the maximal reducing sugar content reached (6.94±0.24) mg/mL when 3.2% (w/w on Auricularia auricula pulp base) of pectinase and cellulase was added, and the mass ratio of pectinase and cellulase was 2:3 (w/w) under the following enzymatic hydrolysis conditions: Temperature of 50 ℃, pH5.50 for 3.5 h. Under the conditions of L. plantarum and L. fermentum ratio of 1:1, fermentation temperature at 37 ℃, inoculation amount at 3%, and fermentation time for 8 h, the DPPH free radical scavenging rate of the fermentation broth reached 92.46%±3.22%. The reducing sugar content and antioxidant capacity of the Auricularia auricula pulp treated by enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation had been significantly improved.

Based on online survey data from 2020, the present study employed a logit model to examine the effects of COVID-19 on household financial behaviors in China. Additionally, the KHB (Kohler, Karlson, Holm) model was employed to explore the pathway through which COVID-19 affects household financial behaviors. These analyses revealed that household saving and borrowing behaviors were more sensitive to COVID-19 than insurance and investment behaviors. Moreover, the effects of COVID-19 on household saving and investment behaviors were found to be mediated by attitudes toward COVID-19. These findings suggest that more effective measures to reduce households’ panic attitude to public health emergencies can diminish fluctuations in household financial behaviors in the short term.

BackgroundCognitive impairment (CI) has become a worldwide health problem. The relationship between CI and uric acid (UA) is contradictory.ObjectiveWe included participants with a full spectrum of CI, from cognitively unimpaired (CU) to dementia, from the Chongqing Ageing & Dementia Study (CADS).MethodsFirst, we identified the relationships between serum UA (sUA) and cognitive function in different stages of CI. Second, we analyzed these relationships among different stages and types of CI. Finally, we explored the association between sUA and amyloid/tangle/neurodegeneration (ATN) biomarkers.ResultsWe recruited 427 participants from the CADS, including 382 participants with mini-mental state examination (MMSE) evaluation. The levels of sUA were positively correlated with MMSE scores (p < 0.001), and the correlation was prominent in the course of dementia and in the type of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The levels of UA had a positive correlation with plasma amyloid-β 42 (Aβ42) (p = 0.004). Higher levels of sUA weakened the correlation of MMSE scores with CSF ATN biomarkers and the correlation of CSF Aβ42 with tau.ConclusionUA is positively correlated with cognitive function, especially in the advanced stage of AD. The probable neuroprotective effects of sUA mainly act on Aβ42 and the downstream pathological cascade.

Due to space environment interference, imperfect data processing model, and the performance of atomic clocks, real-time satellite clock products often contain outliers or irregular biases. We propose a real-time linear moving short-term prediction algorithm to predict clock offsets and detect abnormalities. The proposed algorithm mainly includes phase/frequency anomaly detection and real-time prediction part. Both the phase and frequency domains are used to detect abnormal clock offsets with previous epochs for building the clock prediction model accurately. The real-time moving prediction module utilizes the high short-term prediction performance to check the clock abnormality. The performance of the algorithm is then evaluated for all satellites with real-time estimated satellite clock offsets. To verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed linear moving model and algorithm, the results of the grey model GM(1,1) and the ARIMA model are also compared. The experimental results indicated that the algorithm can detect clock outliers, frequency modulation, and phase jumps, and the linear model has a better clock performance improvement. After the abnormalities are removed with the proposed algorithm, the average STD accuracy of the real-time clock offsets for all satellites is improved by 15.5%, compared to an improvement of 11.4% by the GM(1,1) model and 11.5% by the ARIMA model. The PPP results demonstrate that the proposed clock prediction algorithm improves the positioning accuracy by 8.1%, 13.3%, and 16.9% in the east, north, and up components, respectively.

Abstract Background Combined targeting of CDK4/6 and ER is now the standard of care for patients with advanced ER+/HER2− breast cancer. However, acquired resistance to these therapies frequently leads to disease progression. As such, it is critical to identify the mechanisms by which resistance to CDK4/6-based therapies is acquired and also identify therapeutic strategies to overcome resistance. Methods In this study, we developed and characterized multiple in vitro and in vivo models of acquired resistance to CDK4/6-based therapies. Resistant models were screened by reverse phase protein array (RPPA) for cell signaling changes that are activated in resistance. Results We show that either a direct loss of Rb or loss of dependence on Rb signaling confers cross-resistance to inhibitors of CDK4/6, while PI3K/mTOR signaling remains activated. Treatment with the p110α-selective PI3K inhibitor, alpelisib (BYL719), completely blocked the progression of acquired CDK4/6 inhibitor-resistant xenografts in the absence of continued CDK4/6 inhibitor treatment in models of both PIK3CA mutant and wild-type ER+/HER2− breast cancer. Triple combination therapy against PI3K:CDK4/6:ER prevented and/or delayed the onset of resistance in treatment-naive ER+/HER2− breast cancer models. Conclusions These data support the clinical investigation of p110α-selective inhibitors of PI3K, such as alpelisib, in patients with ER+/HER2− breast cancer who have progressed on CDK4/6:ER-based therapies. Our data also support the investigation of PI3K:CDK4/6:ER triple combination therapy to prevent the onset of resistance to the combination of endocrine therapy plus CDK4/6 inhibition.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) assists in the phytoremediation of heavy-metal-contaminated soils, but the effect of synergistic remediation of DOM on plants is unclear. This study investigated the effect of two DOM sources (cotton straw (CM) DOM and farmyard manure (FM) DOM) on cadmium (Cd) accumulation in Cd-contaminated soil by cotton and evaluated the phytoremediation effect of DOM. The results showed that adding DOM reduced the available nitrogen and increased organic matter, available phosphorus and available potassium. Applying DOM increased the proportions of Cd acid soluble fractions and reduced the proportions of Cd residual fractions by 1–7%. DOM application increased root length, root surface area and root volume compared to the control and had a promoting or inhibiting effect on cotton biomass, depending on the soil Cd concentration. Furthermore, applying DOM improved the Cd content and bioconcentration factor of cotton. The lower the molecular weight, hydrophilic components and aromaticity of DOM, the more conducive to Cd accumulation is in cotton. The correlation and random forest analyses also showed that CM showed high remediation potential. According to our study, DOM can improve the phytoremediation efficiency of cotton, especially in low-concentration contaminated soils. This study provides a basis for applying DOM in the phytoremediation of Cd-contaminated soils.

With the development of autopilot, the performance of intelligent vehicles is constrained by their inability to perceive blind and beyond visual range areas. Vehicle-to-infrastructure cooperative perception has become an effective method for achieving reliable and higher-level autonomous driving. A vehicle-to-infrastructure cooperative beyond visual range and non-blind area method, based on heterogeneous sensors, was proposed in this study. Firstly, a feature map receptive field enhancement module with spatial dilated convolution module (SDCM), based on spatial dilated convolution, was proposed and embedded into the YOLOv4 algorithm. The YOLOv4-SDCM algorithm with SDCM module achieved a 1.65% mAP improvement in multi-object detection performance with the BDD100K test set. Moreover, the backbone of CenterPoint was improved with the addition of self-calibrated convolutions, coordinate attention, and residual structure. The proposed Centerpoint-FE (Feature Enhancement) algorithm achieved a 3.25% improvement in mAP with the ONCE data set. In this paper, a multi-object post-fusion matching method of heterogeneous sensors was designed to realize the vehicle-to-infrastructure cooperative beyond visual range. Experiments conducted at urban intersections without traffic lights demonstrated that the proposed method effectively resolved the problem of beyond visual range perception of intelligent vehicles.

With the continuously growing city size and the increasingly complex and changeable light environment in the city, remote sensing and ground-measured technologies have certain limitations in the research of urban night light environment. The ground-measured data are accurate but low in efficiency and small in scale, while the night-light remote sensing data have the characteristics of high accuracy and large coverage. In this paper, high-resolution night-light remote sensing data and high-accuracy ground-measured data were used to establish an urban ground light environment inversion method with the advantages of remote sensing and ground-measured data in a “space-ground collaboration” approach. A ground database is constructed in GIS based on 26,000 ground measurement data of 4 blocks, 3 spatial perspectives, and 3 light environment parameters. Based on the comparison of the numerical relationship between the measured data of each light environment parameter and each window, the horizontal window is selected as the target window for the ground night light environment inversion research. The urban night light environment inversion method based on the correlation between telemetry and ground- measurement is used to construct and compare the correlation between Luojia night light radiance data and 9 sets of measured data of different ground windows and different light environment parameters. The illuminance measured data of horizontal window and Luojia radiance data, both of which are highly correlated, are selected for regression analysis. The mathematical inversion model of ground illuminance is constructed based on the cubic polynomial model with the lowest RMSE among the six regression models. The inversion result not only has photometric calibration, but also is superior to the original data in terms of population data relevance and accuracy.

The perceived quality of street lighting influences pedestrians’ perceptions of safety and visual comfort, as well as outdoors activities at night. This study explores the association between street lighting attributes, such as illuminance and wavelength, and pedestrians’ feeling of safety (FoS) and perceived lighting quality (PLQ) in eight residential districts in Dalian, China. To achieve this goal, we combine remote sensing technology with ground investigation. The ground research includes physical measurements of lighting attributes, such as intensity, color temperature, and glare, as well as survey evaluations of pedestrians’ perceptions of safety and visual comfort. We also analyze the influence of several environmental factors, such as traffic volumes and vegetation, while accounting for personal characteristics of the observers, such as gender and age. Findings from the remote sensing reveal that Dalian’s residential districts differ substantially by their nighttime light emissions, with high concentration of strong red band (i.e., long wavelength) emissions occurring in Zhongshan and Jinzhou, and strong blue band (i.e., short wavelength) emissions found in central Zhongshan. Results from the ground surveys further indicate that a satisfactory level of FoS reaches at the illumination levels of 5–17 lx, and that people feel safer if nighttime light is warm and uniform. From a multiple regression analysis, it is also found that illuminance and uniformity are the main factors affecting PLQ under conditions of low or high illuminance, while glare and color temperature play a more significant role under high illuminance. In addition, a satisfactory level of PLQ is found at illuminance levels of 25–35 lx and light color temperature of 4000 K–5500 K.

The volatility of the cumulative displacement of landslides is related to the influence of external factors. To improve the prediction of nonlinear changes in landslide displacement caused by external influences, a new combined forecasting model of landslide displacement has been proposed. Variational modal decomposition (VMD) was used to obtain the trend and fluctuation sequences of the original sequence of landslide displacement. First, we established a stacked long short time memory (LSTM) network model and introduced rainfall and reservoir water levels as influencing factors to predict the fluctuation sequence; next, we used a threshold autoregressive (TAR) model to predict the trend sequence, following which the trend and fluctuation prediction sequence were superimposed to obtain the cumulative predicted displacement of the landslide. Finally, the VMD-stacked LSTM-TAR combination model based on the variational modal decomposition, stacked long short time memory network, and a threshold autoregressive model was built. Taking the landslide of Baishuihe in the Three Gorges Reservoir area as an example, through comparison with the prediction results of the VMD-recurrent neural network-TAR, VMD-back propagation neural network-TAR, and VMD-LSTM-TAR, the proposed combined prediction model was noted to have high accuracy, and it provided a novel approach for the prediction of volatile landslide displacement.

A novel and effective green system consisting of deep eutectic solvent (DES) was proposed to prepare lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) without any lignin modification. The LNPs are obtained through the dialysis of the kraft lignin-DES solution. The particle size distribution, Zeta potential and morphology of the LNPs are characterized by using dynamic light scattering (DLS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The average diameter of LNPs is in the range 123.6 to 140.7 nm, and the LNPs show good stability and dispersibility in water. The composite beads composed of LNPs and sodium alginate (SA) are highly efficient (97.1%) at removing methylene blue (MB) from the aqueous solution compared to 82.9% and 77.4% by the SA/bulk kraft lignin composite and pure SA, respectively. Overall, the LNPs-SA bio-nanocomposite with high adsorption capacity (258.5 mg/g) could be useful in improving water quality and other related applications.

Malignant tumors pose a major problem in the medical field. Millimeter wave (MMW) exposure have potential apoptosis-promoting effects on several types of tumors. Considering that the penetration depth of millimeter wave is usually several millimeters, we study the apoptosis-promoting effects of millimeter wave exposure on A375 human melanoma tumor cells in vitro , and this topic has not been explored in the previous literature. In this study, we use the A375 human melanoma cell line as an experimental model exposed to 35.2 GHz millimeter wave in vitro to determine any positive effect and further explore the underlying mechanisms. In this study, 2 groups namely, exposed and sham groups, were set. The exposed groups included 4 exposure time periods of 15, 30, 60, and 90 minutes. The cells in the sham group did not receive millimeter wave exposure. After millimeter wave exposure, the A375 cells in the exposed and sham groups were collected for further experimental procedures. The cell viability after exposure was determined using a cell counting kit, and the apoptosis of A375 cells was assessed by Annexin V/propidium iodide. Changes in the expression of apoptosis-related proteins, including cleaved-caspase-3, and -8, were examined by Western blot. We observed that the millimeter wave exposure could inhibit the viability and induce apoptosis in A375 cells, and the expression of cleaved caspase-3 and -8 were upregulated ( P < .05). The results indicated that the millimeter wave at 35.2 GHz exerted apoptosis-promoting effects on the A375 cells via a pathway by activating of caspase-8 and -3.

ObjectiveUsing a rat model of chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS), to investigate the effects of electroacupuncture (EA) on the tissue plasminogen activator (tPA)/brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) pathway.MethodsSixty male Sprague–Dawley rats were randomly divided into four groups: normal, model, fluoxetine (fluox), or EA. Experimental groups were subjected to 28 d of CUMS modeling. One hour after CUMS, the fluox and EA groups were treated with fluox and a 20 min EA intervention, respectively. Depressive-like behaviors were assessed by open field and sucrose preference tests. After the rats were sacrificed, brains were dissected and processed using hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining to observe changes in the morphology and quantity of neurons in the hippocampal cornu ammonis 3 area. Western blot and real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) demonstrated the effects of EA on the tPA/BDNF pathway-related molecules in the hippocampi and raphe nuclei.ResultsCompared to the model group, the number of horizontal and vertical movements and the percentage of sucrose consumption in the EA groups were significantly increased (P < 0.01). Compared to the model group, HE staining showed that the hippocampal neurons in the EA and fluox groups were arranged neatly, with rich layers and complete cell structures. The Western blot and real-time PCR showed that the levels of tPA, BDNF, tropomyosin receptor kinase B, and BDNF micro RNA (mRNA) in the hippocampi of the EA group were higher than in the model group (P < 0.01, P < 0.01, P < 0.05, P < 0.01, respectively). The content of p75NTR, proBDNF, and tPA mRNA in the hippocampi of the EA group displayed no significant differences compared to the model group. The tPA mRNA content in the raphe nuclei of the EA group was higher than in the model group (P < 0.01), and the BDNF content in the raphe nuclei was lower than in the model group (P < 0.05). There were no significant differences in tPA and BDNF mRNA between the EA and model groups.ConclusionEA may reverse depressive-like behaviors in CUMS, which may be related to the tPA/BDNF pathway in the hippocampus.

Background: Mounts of studies have shown that low estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is associated with increased risk of adverse outcomes in patients with coronary artery disease. However, high level of eGFR was less reported. In the study, we aimed to explore the relationship between the baseline eGFR, especially the high level, and contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI) in a Chinese population who underwent an emergency percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Methods: Patients who underwent an emergency PCI from 2013 to 2015 were enrolled and divided into five groups as eGFR decreasing. Baseline characteristics were collected and analyzed. The rates of CI-AKI and the composite endpoint (including nonfatal myocardial infarction, revascularization, stroke, and all-cause death) at 6- and 12-month follow-up were compared. Logistic analysis for CI-AKI was performed. Results: A total of 1061 patients were included and the overall CI-AKI rate was 22.7% (241/1061). The separate rates were 77.8% (7/9) in Group 1 (eGFR ≥120 ml·min−1·1.73 m−2), 26.0% (118/454) in Group 2 (120 ml·min−1·1.73 m−2> eGFR ≥90 ml·min−1·1.73m−2), 18.3% (86/469) in Group 3 (90 ml·min−1·1.73 m−2> eGFR ≥60 ml·min−1·1.73 m−2), 21.8% (26/119) in Group 4 (60 ml·min−1·1.73 m−2> eGFR ≥30 ml·min−1·1.73 m−2), and 40.0% (4/10) in Group 5 (eGFR

Abstract Stroke is a life threatening event that is expected to more than double over the next 40 years. Atrial fibrillation (AF) has been reported as a strong independent risk factor for stroke. We have previously shown that a hemodynamic perturbation by AF or reduced cardiac output and cycle length may have a significant impact on clot trajectory and thus embolic stroke propensity through the left common carotid artery using an idealized aortic arch model. Here, we show the dependence of flow patterns and hence stroke propensity on geometry of patient-specific aortas. We performed computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations to determine the variations of AF-induced stroke propensity over various image-based patient-dependent aorta models. The results demonstrated that curvature pattern of aorta can play a determinant role in AF-induced stroke propensity alteration. Specifically, it was shown that the hemodynamic perturbation by AF considered led to substantial increase in stroke propensity (i.e., 2.5~3.8 fold elevation) for lower curvature angle 90°. The present simulations suggest that aortic arch curvature is an important risk factor for embolic stroke which should be tested in future clinical trials.

Background: Previous studies of contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI) were mostly based on selective percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) cases, and risk factors of CI-AKI after emergency PCI are unclear. The aim of this study was to explore the risk factors of CI-AKI in a Chinese population undergoing emergency PCI. Methods: A total of 1061 consecutive patients undergoing emergency PCI during January 2013 and June 2015 were enrolled and divided into CI-AKI and non-CI-AKI group. Univariable and multivariable analyses were used to identify the risk factors of CI-AKI in emergency PCI patients. CI-AKI was defined as an increase in serum creatinine ≥25% or ≥0.5 mg/dl (44.2 μmol/L) above baseline within 3 days after exposure to contrast medium. Results: The incidence of CI-AKI in patients undergoing emergency PCI was 22.7% (241/1061). Logistic multivariable analysis showed that body surface area (BSA) (odds ratio [OR] 0.213, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.075–0.607, P= 0.004), history of myocardial infarction (MI) (OR 1.642, 95% CI: 1.079–2.499, P= 0.021), left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) (OR 0.969, 95% CI: 0.944–0.994, P= 0.015), hemoglobin (Hb) (OR 0.988, 95% CI: 0.976–1.000, P= 0.045), estimated glomerular filtration rate (OR 1.027, 95% CI: 1.018–1.037, P < 0.001), left anterior descending (LAD) stented (OR 1.464, 95% CI: 1.000–2.145, P= 0.050), aspirin (OR 0.097, 95%CI: 0.009–0.987, P= 0.049), and diuretics use (OR 1.850, 95% CI: 1.233–2.777, P= 0.003) were independent predictors of CI-AKI in patients undergoing emergency PCI. Conclusion: History of MI, low BSA, LVEF and Hb level, LAD stented, and diuretics use are associated with increased risk of CI-AKI in patients undergoing emergency PCI.

Lignin nanomaterials have wide application prospects in the fields of cosmetics delivery, energy storage, and environmental governance. In this study, we developed a simple and sustainable synthesis approach to produce uniform lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) by dissolving industrial lignin in deep eutectic solvents (DESs) followed by a self-assembling process. LNPs with high yield could be obtained through nanoprecipitation. The LNPs were characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Distinct LNPs could be produced by changing the type of DES, lignin sources, pre-dropping lignin concentration, and the pH of the system. Their diameter is in the range of 20–200 nm and they show excellent dispersibility and superior long-term stability. The method of preparing LNPs from lignin–DES with water as an anti-solvent is simple, rapid, and environmentally friendly. The outcome aids to further the advancement of lignin-based nanotechnology.

Yunnanilus pulcherrimus belongs to the genus Yunnanilus within the subfamily Nemacheilidae, endemic to Guangxi province, Southwestern China. In this study, we sequenced the complete mitochondrial genome of Y. pulcherrimus and submitted the genome into GenBank with accession number MK387705. The complete mitochondrial genome is 16,573 bp in length, consisting of 37 genes coding for 13 proteins, two rRNAs, 22 tRNAs, and one control region. Phylogenetic analysis using mitochondrial genomes of 16 species showed that Y. pulcherrimus was first grouped with micronemacheilus cruciatus as a monophyletic clade, but not including Y. jinxiensis.

Aphyocypris pulchrilineata is a miniature cyprinid fish that only found in the streams or the underground river outlet of Hongshui River and Liujiang River, Southwestern China. The complete mitochondrial genome is 16,610 bp in length, consisting of 37 genes coding for 13 proteins, two rRNAs, 22 tRNAs, and one control region with 936 bp long. Phylogenetic analysis using mitochondrial genomes of 16 species showed that the genus Aphyocypris, Yaoshanicus, Pararasbora, and Nicholsicypris clustered as a monophyletic clade with strong supports, and A. pulchrilineata was the most basal species in this clade.

Sinocyclocheilus yishanensis belongs to the genus Sinocyclucheilus (Cypriniformes, Cyprinidae), endemic to Guangxi province, Southwestern China. The circular mitogenome was 16,573 bp in length and consisted of 13 protein-coding genes, two ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes, 22 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, and one non-coding control region. The overall base composition was 31.83% A, 25.14% T, 27.03% C, and 16.00% G with 43.03% GC content. Phylogenetic analysis using mitochondrial genomes of 16 species showed that all Sinocyclocheilus species clustered as one monophyletic clade except S. jii, and S. yishanensis was the closest to S. ronganensis.

Cophecheilus bamen is a freshwater cyprinid fish that endemic to Jingxi and Tiandong county, Southwestern China. In this study, we first determined the complete mitochondrial genome sequence of C. bamen. The circular mitogenome was 16,588 bp in length and consisted of 13 protein-coding genes, two ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes, 22 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, and one non-coding control region. Phylogenetic analysis using mitochondrial genomes of 16 species showed that C. bamen is supported as a single monophyletic clade and sister to the Parasinilabeo, Pseudogyrinocheilus, Semilabeo, Discogobio, Pseudocrossocheilus (synonymy: Sincrossocheilus), and Ptychidio genus.

Studies in human and non-human primates have confirmed the compensatory enlargement or positive remodeling (Glagov phenomenon) of coronary vessels in the presence of focal stenosis. To our knowledge, this is the first study to document arterial enlargement in a metabolic syndrome animal model with diffuse coronary artery disease (DCAD) in the absence of severe focal stenosis. Two different groups of Ossabaw miniature pigs were fed a high fat atherogenic diet for 4 months (Group I) and 12 months (Group II), respectively. Group I (6 pigs) underwent contrast enhanced computed tomographic angiography (CCTA) and intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) at baseline and after 4 months of high fat diet, whereas Group II (7 pigs) underwent only IVUS at 12 months of high fat diet. IVUS measurements of the left anterior descending (LAD), left circumflex (LCX) and right coronary (RCA) arteries in Group I showed an average increase in their lumen cross-sectional areas (CSA) of 25.8%, 11.4%, and 43.4%, respectively, as compared to baseline. The lumen CSA values of LAD in Group II were found to be between the baseline and 4 month values in Group I. IVUS and CCTA measurements showed a similar trend and positive correlation. Fractional flow reserve (FFR) was 0.91 ± 0.07 at baseline and 0.93 ± 0.05 at 4 months with only 2.2%, 1.6% and 1% stenosis in the LAD, LCX and RCA, respectively. The relation between percent stenosis and lumen CSA shows a classical Glagov phenomenon in this animal model of DCAD.

Collagen fibers play an important role in the biomechanics of the blood vessel wall. The objective of this study was to determine the 3D microstructure of collagen fibers in the media and adventitia of coronary arteries. We present a novel optimal angle consistence algorithm to reform image slices in the visualization and analysis of 3D collagen images. 3D geometry was reconstructed from resliced image space where the 3D skeleton was extracted as the primary feature for accurate reconstruction of geometrical parameters. Collagen fibers (range 80-200) were reconstructed from the porcine coronary artery wall for the measurement of various morphological parameters. Collagen waviness and diameters were 1.37 ± 0.19 and 2.61 ± 0.89 μm, respectively. The biaxial distributions of orientation had two different peaks at 110.7 ± 25.2° and 18.4 ± 19.3°. Results for width, waviness, and orientation were found to be in good agreement with manual measurements. In addition to accurately measuring 2D features more efficiently than the manual approach, the present method produced 3D features that could not be measured in the 2D manual approach. These additional parameters included the tilt angle (5.10 ± 2.95°) and cross-sectional area (CSA; 5.98 ± 3.79 μm2) of collagen fibers. These 3D collagen reconstructions provide accurate and reliable microstructure for biomechanical modeling of vessel wall mechanics.

White-striped long-horned beetle, Batocera lineolata occurred in China, Vietnam, Myanmar, India, Japan and Korea and is one of the most important wood-boring forestry pests. Complete mitochondrial genome was determined based on next-generation sequencing. The long-horned beetle has a total length of 15,420 bp, consisting of 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 tRNA, 2 rRNA genes and a non-coding region. The phylogenetic position was closely clustered with 6 other Lamiinae species with strong node support. Within Chrysomeloidea superfamily, a monophyletic Lamiinae clad is recovered as the sister group of the Cerambycinae from three species and the Chrysomelidae consisting five species forms a monophyletic clade which is strongly supported.

Invasive fractional flow reserve (FFR) is the gold standard to assess the functional coronary stenosis. The non-invasive assessment of diameter stenosis (DS) using coronary computed tomography angiography (CTA) has high false positive rate in contrast to FFR. Combining CTA with computational fluid dynamics (CFD), recent studies have shown promising predictions of FFRCT for superior assessment of lesion severity over CTA alone. The CFD models tend to be computationally expensive, however, and require several hours for completing analysis. Here, we introduce simplified models to predict noninvasive FFR at substantially less computational time. In this retrospective pilot study, 21 patients received coronary CTA. Subsequently a total of 32 vessels underwent invasive FFR measurement. For each vessel, FFR based on steady-state and analytical models (FFRSS and FFRAM, respectively) were calculated non-invasively based on CTA and compared with FFR. The accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value were 90.6% (87.5%), 80.0% (80.0%), 95.5% (90.9%), 88.9% (80.0%) and 91.3% (90.9%) respectively for FFRSS (and FFRAM) on a per-vessel basis, and were 75.0%, 50.0%, 86.4%, 62.5% and 79.2% respectively for DS. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) was 0.963, 0.954 and 0.741 for FFRSS, FFRAM and DS respectively, on a per-patient level. The results suggest that the CTA-derived FFRSS performed well in contrast to invasive FFR and they had better diagnostic performance than DS from CTA in the identification of functionally significant lesions. In contrast to FFRCT, FFRSS requires much less computational time.

AIMS:The 3D geometry of individual vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs), which are essential for understanding the mechanical function of blood vessels, are currently not available. This paper introduces a new 3D segmentation algorithm to determine VSMC morphology and orientation. METHODS AND RESULTS:A total of 112 VSMCs from six porcine coronary arteries were used in the analysis. A 3D semi-automatic segmentation method was developed to reconstruct individual VSMCs from cell clumps as well as to extract the 3D geometry of VSMCs. A new edge blocking model was introduced to recognize cell boundary while an edge growing was developed for optimal interpolation and edge verification. The proposed methods were designed based on Region of Interest (ROI) selected by user and interactive responses of limited key edges. Enhanced cell boundary features were used to construct the cell's initial boundary for further edge growing. A unified framework of morphological parameters (dimensions and orientations) was proposed for the 3D volume data. Virtual phantom was designed to validate the tilt angle measurements, while other parameters extracted from 3D segmentations were compared with manual measurements to assess the accuracy of the algorithm. The length, width and thickness of VSMCs were 62.9±14.9 μm, 4.6±0.6 μm and 6.2±1.8 μm (mean±SD). In longitudinal-circumferential plane of blood vessel, VSMCs align off the circumferential direction with two mean angles of -19.4±9.3° and 10.9±4.7°, while an out-of-plane angle (i.e., radial tilt angle) was found to be 8±7.6° with median as 5.7°. CONCLUSIONS:A 3D segmentation algorithm was developed to reconstruct individual VSMCs of blood vessel walls based on optical image stacks. The results were validated by a virtual phantom and manual measurement. The obtained 3D geometries can be utilized in mathematical models and leads a better understanding of vascular mechanical properties and function.

In this study, we report the complete mitochondrial genome of Sinocyclocheilus ronganensis. The whole mitochondrial genome is 16,587 bp with an accession number KX778473, and consists of 13 protein-coding genes, 2 ribosomal RNAs, 22 transfer RNAs genes, and a 936 bp control region. Phylogenetic analysis shows that S. ronganensis is close to cave-restricted S. anophthalmus and surface-dwelling S. grahami. The complete mitogenome of S. ronganensis may provide useful information for studying the genetic mechanism of cavefish, and enrich the fish mitochondrial genome resource for further research.

Accurate computed tomography (CT)-based reconstruction of coronary morphometry (diameters, length, bifurcation angles) is important for construction of patient-specific models to aid diagnosis and therapy. The objective of this study is to validate the accuracy of patient coronary artery lumen area obtained from CT images based on intravascular ultrasound (IVUS).Morphometric data of 5 patient CT scans with 11 arteries from IVUS were reconstructed including the lumen cross sectional area (CSA), diameter and length. The volumetric data from CT images were analyzed at sub-pixel accuracy to obtain accurate vessel center lines and CSA. A new center line extraction approach was used where an initial estimated skeleton in discrete value was obtained using a traditional thinning algorithm. The CSA was determined directly without any circular shape assumptions to provide accurate reconstruction of stenosis. The root-mean-square error (RMSE) for CSA and diameter were 16.2% and 9.5% respectively.The image segmentation and CSA extraction algorithm for reconstruction of coronary arteries proved to be accurate for determination of vessel lumen area. This approach provides fundamental morphometric data for patient-specific models to diagnose and treat coronary artery disease.

It is well known that flow patterns at the anastomosis of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) are complex and may affect the long-term patency. Various attempts at optimal designs of anastomosis have not improved long-term patency. Here, we hypothesize that mild anastomotic stenosis (area stenosis of about 40-60%) may be adaptive to enhance the hemodynamic conditions, which may contribute to slower progression of atherosclerosis. We further hypothesize that proximal/distal sites to the stenosis have converse changes that may be a risk factor for the diffuse expansion of atherosclerosis from the site of stenosis. Twelve (12) patient-specific models with various stenotic degrees were extracted from computed tomography images using a validated segmentation software package. A 3-D finite element model was used to compute flow patterns including wall shear stress (WSS) and its spatial and temporal gradients (WSS gradient, WSSG, and oscillatory shear index, OSI).
