Hmong people in the United States of America have started to emerge on the national scene thanks to the recent rise of Hmong politicians winning State representative, senate, and assembly seats. The Hmong-American experience in the United States is a rollercoaster experience. While we have made America our home for the past 45 years, our presence is still largely unknown to the majority of the American people. The struggle of every Hmong person living in a relatively unknown land, unknown culture, and unknown people is very real, it represents that of the whole community struggles to survive. This article focuses on my graduate school experience through the so called multicultural education system. I provide a brief history of the Hmong people, why we are here in the United States, Hmong people's overall educational experience, and my personal experience in maneuvering through the bureaucratic institution of graduate school. My story represents the larger story of the Hmong people experience in the United States. Portions of this story have appeared as a chapter in the book, "Voices of Asian American in higher education: The unheard stories" (Obiakor & Hui-Michael, 2018).

Cisplatin resistance is one of the major causes of treatment failure in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). There is an urgent need to uncover the underlying mechanism for developing effective treatment strategies. A quantitative proteomics assay was used to identify differential proteins in cisplatin-resistant cells. Mitochondrial topoisomerase I (TOP1MT) localization was determined using laser confocal microscopy and nucleocytoplasmic separation assay. Chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing, dual-luciferase reporter assay, and RNA immunoprecipitation were used to identify the interaction between pseudogenes, miRNAs, and real genes. In vivo experiments verified the interaction between TOP1MT and pseudogenes on cisplatin resistance. TOP1MT was identified as a driving factor of cisplatin resistance in vitro, in vivo, and in HNSCC patients. Moreover, TOP1MT exceptionally translocated to the nucleus in cisplatin-resistant HNSCC cells in a signal peptide–dependent manner. Nuclear TOP1MT (nTOP1MT) transcriptionally regulated the mitochondrial functional pseudogene MTATP6P1, which bound to miR-137 and miR-491-5p as a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) and promoted the expression of MTATP6. An increase in MTATP6 enhanced mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS), which conferred cisplatin resistance in HNSCC. Our findings revealed that nTOP1MT transcriptionally activated MTAPT6P1 and increased MTATP6 expression via ceRNA, which facilitated OXPHOS and cisplatin resistance. We describe measurements of the pyroelectric coefficient of epitaxial layers of Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3 (BST) and PbZr0.2Ti0.8O3 (PZT) using a modulated laser as the heat source in the frequency range 1 Hz to 10 MHz. The pyroelectric coefficient is also measured as a function of applied static electric field and for films grown on SrTiO3, DyScO3, and GdScO3 substrates. The heat diffusion equation is solved in cylindrical coordinates for the temperature field in a multilayer sample heated by a Gaussian-shaped laser beam. The secondary contribution to the pyroelectric effect caused by piezoelectric effects and in-plane thermal expansion is revealed by the difference between the pyroelectric coefficients at high and low frequencies. The secondary pyroelectric effect has the same dependence on applied field as the pyroelectric coefficient. The magnitude of the secondary effect changes with heating frequency because of changing mechanical conditions, but the pyroelectric coefficient has no other frequency dependence between 1 Hz and 10 MHz. The secondary effect is approximately 15% and 20% of the total pyroelectric response for PZT and BST films, respectively.

We report laser-based direct measurements of the pyroelectric and electrocaloric effects of PbZr1-xTixO3 epitaxial layers as a function of temperature and electric field. By evaluating the differences between the total pyroelectric and electrocaloric coefficients, we determine the secondary contribution to the electrocaloric effect that is created by a combination of piezoelectric and elastocaloric effects. The secondary contribution to the electrocaloric coefficient has the opposite sign as the primary effect and therefore reduces the overall entropy change of PbZr1-xTixO3 in an electric field. The absolute magnitude of the secondary effect is comparable to the primary effect at elevated temperatures of ≈200°C.

CT findings and clinical data, including age, gender, clinical symptoms, serological biomarkers, tumor size, and tumor location, were compared between SRCC and AC. CT texture features were quantified on portal phase images using three-dimensional analysis. A list of texture parameters was generated with MaZda software for the classification of tumors. The texture features, clinical data and CT findings were statistically analyzed for the discrimination ability of SRCC and AC, and the potential predictive parameters that may be used to differentiate the two groups were subsequently tested using the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) and logistic regression analyses. The receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) provided a range of values for establishing the cutoff value, as well as the sensitivity and specificity of prediction for each significant variable.Results: SRCC occurred more often in men than AC did (80.39% vs 49.02%, P < 0.01). The patients were younger in the SRCC group than in the AC group, without a statistically significant difference (55.84 vs 59.20 years, P = 0.216). There were no significant differences in the clinical symptoms, tumor size, or tumor location between the two groups (P=0.505, P=0.19, P=0.843, respectively). The elevation of serological biomarker CA724 was more common in SRCC than in AC (P< 0.001). Perc.01%3D, Perc.10%3D and s(1,0,0) SumAverg were lower in the SRCC group than in the AC group during the portal phase, with the areas under curve (AUCs) of 0.892–0.929, sensitivity of 76.5–84.3% and specificity of 88.2–96.1%. Abstract Background In rectal cancers, radical surgery should follow local excisions, in cases of unexpected, unfavorable tumor characteristics. The oncological results of this completion surgery are inconsistent. This retrospective cohort study assessed the clinical and long-term oncological outcomes of patients that underwent completion surgery to clarify whether a local excision compromised the results of radical surgery. Methods Forty-six patients were included, and the reasons for completion surgery, intraoperative complications, residual tumors, local recurrences (LRs), distant metastases, and cancer-specific survival (CSS) were assessed. The results were compared to 583 patients that underwent primary surgery without adjuvant therapy, treated with a curative intention during the same time period. Results The median follow-up was 14.6 years. The reasons for undergoing completion surgery were positive resection margins (24%), high-risk cancer (30%), or both (46%). Intraoperative perforations occurred in 10/46 (22%) cases. Residual tumor in the rectal wall or lymph node involvement occurred in 12/46 (26%) cases. The risk of intraoperative perforation and residual tumor increased with the pT category. Intraoperative perforations did not increase postoperative complications, but they increased the risk of LRs in cases of intramural residual tumors (p = 0.003). LRs occurred in 2.6% of pT1/2 and 29% of pT3 tumors. Both the 5- and 10-year CSS rates were 88.8% (95% CI 80.0–98.6). Moreover, the LRs of patients with pT1/2 cancers were lower in patients with completion surgery than in patients with primary surgery. Conclusions Rectal wall perforations at the local excision site and residual cancer were the main risks for poor oncological outcomes associated with completion surgery. Local excisions followed by early radical surgery did not appear to compromise outcomes compared to patients with primary surgery for pT1/2 rectal cancer. Improvements in clinical staging should allow more appropriate selection of patients that are eligible for a local excision of rectal cancer.

The measured pyroelectric currents are proportional to the rate of temperature change, from ∼10-5 A/m2 to ∼103 A/m2 over the range 10-2 to 106 K/s. The film temperature oscillation is controlled using either a hotplate, microfabricated heater, or modulated laser, and the pyroelectric current is measured from a microelectrode fabricated onto the film. In this paper, A mathematical framework of checking accuracy of numerical methods from mathematical software is been developed and investigated. Rössler attractor is used as case study as its analytical solution is non-existence. The algorithms investigated from Mathcad software includes AdamsBDF, Adams, BDF and Runge-Kutta fixed methods. The numerical solutions of each built-in algorithms are compared to well-known Joubert-Greeff method. The estimation of global and local residuals are shown.
