Interactions with competitors and predators can generate strong selection and favour the evolution of novel strategies for mitigating fitness costs. Adaptations to mitigate competition and predation risk often involve evolution of traits which directly reduce costs. Simultaneously, the evolution of behaviours that co‐opt the functional traits of non‐interacting, third‐party species have also been observed but remain poorly studied (e.g. anointing behaviour, tri‐trophic interactions). Here we investigate if the novel behavioural co‐option of conifer resin in a cavity‐nesting bird can ameliorate interactions with nest predators and nest site competitors. Red‐breasted nuthatches (Sitta canadensis) collect resin from live trees and apply it around the entrances of their nest cavities in dead trees. Using paired nest boxes, we mimicked the nuthatch behaviour by apply resin around the hole of one and not the paired box in two field experiments to test a priori hypotheses about the evolution and adaptive value of this behaviour. The first experiment baited the paired boxes with food to attract mammalian predators (e.g. red squirrels Tamiasciurus hudsonicus). The second experiment left boxes available for breeding by cavity‐nesting birds that compete with nuthatches for nest sites (e.g. house wrens Troglodytes aedon). We also used ancestral trait reconstruction to test whether resin use is a non‐adaptive derivation of mud‐plastering behaviour observed in numerous congeners. Experimental nest boxes with resin applied to the entrance were less likely to have bait removed and less likely to have nests built or initiated than paired nest boxes without resin. Ancestral trait reconstruction suggested that resin use was more likely (>77%) to have evolved in ancestors that did not exhibit mud‐plastering behaviour. Our results do not support a major role of phylogenetic inertia and provide experimental evidence that application of conifer resin to nest cavities ameliorates interference competition from other cavity‐nesting species and reduces nest predation risk. Overall, our results showcase the ecological function of behavioural co‐option and its important consequences for fitness in nature. Telomere length and DNA methylation (DNAm) are two promising biomarkers of biological age. Environmental factors and life history traits are known to affect variation in both these biomarkers, especially during early life, yet surprisingly little is known about their reciprocal association, especially in natural populations. Here, we explore how variation in DNAm, growth rate, and early‐life conditions are associated with telomere length changes during development. We tested these associations by collecting data from wild, nestling zebra finches in the Australian desert. We found that increases in the level of DNAm were negatively correlated with telomere length changes across early life. We also confirm previously documented effects of post hatch growth rate and clutch size on telomere length in a natural ecological context for a species that has been extensively studied in the laboratory. However, we did not detect any effect of ambient temperature during developmental on telomere length dynamics. We also found that the absolute telomere length of wild zebra finches, measured using the in‐gel TRF method, was similar to that of captive birds. Our findings highlight exciting new opportunities to link and disentangle potential relationships between DNA based biomarkers of ageing, and of physiological reactions to environmental change. As the knowledge base and importance of mitochondrial physiology to human health expands, the necessity for harmonizing the terminology concerning mitochondrial respiratory states and rates has become increasingly apparent. The chemiosmotic theory establishes the mechanism of energy transformation and coupling in oxidative phosphorylation. The unifying concept of the protonmotive force provides the framework for developing a consistent theoretical foundation of mitochondrial physiology and bioenergetics. We follow guidelines of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) on terminology in physical chemistry, extended by considerations of open systems and thermodynamics of irreversible processes. The concept-driven constructive terminology incorporates the meaning of each quantity and aligns concepts and symbols with the nomenclature of classical bioenergetics. We endeavour to provide a balanced view of mitochondrial respiratory control and a critical discussion on reporting data of mitochondrial respiration in terms of metabolic flows and fluxes. Uniform standards for evaluation of respiratory states and rates will ultimately contribute to reproducibility between laboratories and thus support the development of databases of mitochondrial respiratory function in species, tissues, and cells. Clarity of concept and consistency of nomenclature facilitate effective transdisciplinary communication, education, and ultimately further discovery.

- Abstract
Rates of embryonic and post-natal growth vary extensively among species and geographic space. This variation is well represented in songbird offspring from different latitudes and can strongly influence organismal quality and fitness. However, environmental and evolutionary causes and consequences of variation in embryonic and post-natal growth remain unclear. Here we experimentally show in the field that, within the constraints imposed by physiological trade-offs, warmer incubation temperatures shortened embryonic period length among nine species of songbirds from two latitudes. Yet, the magnitude of the response varied and species-specific reaction norms of embryonic reduction in response to our treatment positively correlated with the natural temperature experienced during incubation. Furthermore, we found little evidence for potential metabolic costs imposed on offspring by faster development, but we detected benefits for size at hatching instead. These results question the generality of theories considering avian development to be strictly dictated by intrinsic trade-offs and suggest that shorter embryonic periods caused by warmer temperature may not be as detrimental as traditionally thought. Costs of shorter development due to warmer embryonic temperature may appear later in life as stunted post-natal growth via influences on offspring metabolism and parental feeding and brooding effort. Our treatment increased metabolic rate without producing appreciable changes in parental care yielding slower post-natal growth rates in two species, faster growth in one and no effects for the majority of the species studied. These results suggest that shorter embryonic periods are not generally associated to costs paid during the post-natal stages but also question the role of metabolism for growth. We tested for the association between metabolism and growth using a comparative approach. We discovered that metabolic rate and body mass of nestlings predicted variation in pos

- Abstract
Our understanding of connections between human and animal health has advanced substantially since the canary was introduced as a sentinel of toxic conditions in coal mines. Nonetheless, the development of wildlife sentinels for monitoring human exposure to toxins has been limited. Here, we capitalized on a three-decade long child blood lead monitoring program to demonstrate that the globally ubiquitous and human commensal house sparrow (Passer domesticus) can be used as a sentinel of human health risks in urban environments impacted by lead mining. We showed that sparrows are a viable proxy for the measurement of blood lead levels in children at a neighborhood scale (0.28 km2). In support of the generalizability of this approach, the blood lead relationship established in our focal mining city enabled us to accurately predict elevated blood lead levels in children from another mining city using only sparrows from the second location. Using lead concentrations and lead isotopic compositions from environmental and biological matrices, we identified shared sources and pathways of lead exposure in sparrows and children, with strong links to contamination from local mining emissions. Our findings showed how human commensal species can be used to identify and predict human health risks over time and space.
