Abstract

We present a new approach for designing thermal shielding materials using two-dimensional oxide nanosheets. Our approach uses hetero-assembly design [(Ti _0.87 O _2 ) _m (Cs _2.7 W _11 O _35− _d ) _20 ( m = 0, 5, 10)] by overlaying high refractive index ( n ) Ti _0.87 O _2 nanosheets with transparent conducting Cs _2.7 W _11 O _35− _d nanosheets. Through proper design of the thickness of high- n Ti _0.87 O _2 layers, we achieved the optimum thermal shielding properties with a high NIR reflectance (>46%), a high visible transparency (>76%) and a neutral color in an ultrathin form (

2. Relationship between tectonism and desertification inferred from provenance and lithofacies changes in the Cenozoic terrestrial sequence of the southwestern Tarim Basin

Abstract

Abstract The modern-day Tarim Basin is covered almost entirely by the Taklimakan sand desert and is one of the most arid regions in the world. Unraveling the aridification history of the desert is important for understanding global climate changes during the Cenozoic, yet the timing and mechanisms driving its formation remain controversial. One of the leading hypotheses is that the uplift of the Pamir, located to the west of the Tarim Basin, blocked the intrusion of moist air and induced the aridification in the Tarim Basin. In this study, we explore the linkage between the uplift of the Pamir and the desertification in the Tarim Basin from the late Eocene to the middle Miocene in the Aertashi section, which is located at the southwestern edge of the Tarim Basin and offers the longest sedimentary record with a reliable age model. Provenance changes in fluvial deposits along the Aertashi section were examined using electron spin resonance (ESR) signal intensity and crystallinity index (CI) of quartz in the sand fraction of fluvial sandstones and clast counting based on the identification of clast types by thin section observation to identify timings of tectonic events in the Pamir, from which clastic materials were supplied to the Aertashi section by rivers. Our results suggest that major provenance changes in the drainage of the paleo-Yarkand river delivering clasts to the Aertashi section occurred at ca. 27, 20, and 15 Ma. These timings are mostly consistent with those observed in previous provenance studies in the Aertashi section and probably reflect tectonic events in the Pamir. On the other hand, according to the previous studies, the first occurrence of sand dune deposits indicates that the Tarim Basin was relatively arid after ca. 34 Ma. Hence, our result does not support the hypothesis that the initial aridification in the Tarim Basin was triggered by the uplift of the Pamir and the resultant blocking of moisture supply from the Paratethys Sea, although the subsequent intensification of tectonic events at ca. 27 Ma in the Pamir might have caused aridification indicated by the initiation of loess deposition.

Abstract

TiO2(B) has a high theoretical capacity of 335 mAh g−1 for Li+ intercalation and thus has been considered as a candidate for lithium-ion capacitor and Li-ion battery negative electrodes. For high rate lithium storage, i.e. high power density, it is important to shorten the Li+ diffusion path by using nanostructured TiO2(B). In this work, TiO2(B) nanosheet with different equivalent diameter of 300 nm and 30 nm were prepared. In addition, the orientation of the TiO2(B) nanosheets was manipulated by altering the deposition method and drying process. Smaller size TiO2(B) nanosheets had better Li+ intercalation ability compared to larger sized TiO2(B) nanosheets. The effect of alignment of the TiO2(B) nanosheets was evident for small-sized TiO2(B) nanosheets; vertical or random alignment of small-sized TiO2(B) afforded higher capacity compared to horizontally oriented nanosheets.

Abstract

In order to understand motion mechanisms of slippers in swash plate type piston pumps, the analysis flow combining multi-body dynamics and the oil-film analysis was constructed. In the modeling, it is possible to consider the slipper deformation due to the oil film reaction force and the contact with the retainer. This analysis evaluated the effects of elastic deformation of the slipper, discharge pressure, and hydraulic oil temperature on the slipper behavior, and clarified the following. (1) When the slipper is located on the high-pressure side of the pump, the oil-film gap to swash becomes wider in the entrance direction of slipper’s sliding surface. As a result, the gap becomes wedge shape and dynamic pressure is generated. The slipper floats due to this dynamic pressure combined with the static pressure. (2) The slipper tilt angle becomes larger and the flying height is smaller in calculation by considering the elastic deformation of the slipper. This makes it possible to safety evaluate the gap. (3) Changes in discharge pressure and hydraulic oil temperature have a great influence on the behavior of slippers.

7. Vertical Distribution of Arthropod Assemblages and the Effects of Weather Conditions on Arthropod Rain in a Temperate Conifer Forest

Abstract

Vertical stratification of forests results in the occurrence of different arthropod assemblages between the vertical layers. Fallen arthropods from the canopy layers (i.e., “arthropod rain”) are additional food sources for predators thriving on the forest floor (FF). However, the abundances of arthropods are strongly affected by weather conditions and vertical stratification. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the vertical distribution of arthropod assemblages and effects of temperature and precipitation on the arthropod rain in a temperate conifer (Cryptomeria japonica) forest. Arthropods were collected by water-pan traps and trunk-sticky traps in the upper canopy (UC; 16 m), lower canopy (10 m), and FF (0.5 m). Among the fallen arthropods collected by water-pan traps, wandering detritivores, and herbivores were more abundant ranging from the FF to the UC, whereas the abundance of wandering predators (mainly spiders) was similar in the upper and lower canopies. However, detritivores, herbivores, and predators showed the highest abundance in the UC among the flying arthropods. Wandering arthropods moved upward from the FF toward the tree trunks more frequently than downward, indicating the importance of arthropod immigration from the ground to arboreal habitats. Temperature and precipitation had different effects on fallen and moving arthropods among different taxonomic groups. Flying arthropods were affected only by temperature, while wandering detritivores and herbivores were affected by precipitation and temperature. Thus, the abundance of wandering and flying arthropods differed among the vertical layers of a temperate conifer forest; additionally, arthropod rain was closely associated with weather conditions.

Abstract Background Streptococcus pyogenes (group A Streptococcus [GAS]) is a major human pathogen that causes a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations. Although invasive GAS (iGAS) infections are relatively uncommon, emm3/ST15 GAS is a highly virulent, invasive, and pathogenic strain. Global molecular epidemiology analysis has suggested that the frequency of emm3 GAS has been recently increasing. Case presentation A 14-year-old patient was diagnosed with streptococcal toxic shock syndrome and severe pneumonia, impaired renal function, and rhabdomyolysis. GAS was isolated from a culture of endotracheal aspirates and designated as KS030. Comparative genome analysis suggested that KS030 is classified as emm3 (emm-type) and ST15 (multilocus sequencing typing [MLST]), which is similar to iGAS isolates identified in the UK (2013) and Switzerland (2015). Conclusions We conclude that the global dissemination of emm3/ST15 GAS strain has the potential to cause invasive disease.

Abstract

Extremely low-frequency magnetic fields (ELF-MFs) are generated by power lines and household electrical devices. In the last several decades, some evidence has shown an association between ELF-MF exposure and depression and/or anxiety in epidemiological and animal studies. The mechanism underlying ELF-MF-induced depression is considered to involve adrenal steroidogenesis, which is triggered by ELF-MF exposure. However, how ELF-MFs stimulate adrenal steroidogenesis is controversial. In the current study, we investigated the effect of ELF-MF exposure on the mouse adrenal cortex-derived Y-1 cell line and the human adrenal cortex-derived H295R cell line to clarify whether the ELF-MF stimulates adrenal steroidogenesis directly. ELF-MF exposure was found to significantly stimulate adrenal steroidogenesis (p < 0.01-0.05) and the expression of adrenal steroid synthetic enzymes (p < 0.05) in Y-1 cells, but the effect was weak in H295R cells. Y-1 cells exposed to an ELF-MF showed significant decreases in phosphodiesterase activity (p < 0.05) and intracellular Ca2+ concentration (p < 0.01) and significant increases in intracellular cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) concentration (p < 0.001-0.05) and cAMP response element-binding protein phosphorylation (p < 0.05). The increase in cAMP was not inhibited by treatment with NF449, an inhibitor of the Gs alpha subunit of G protein. Our results suggest that ELF-MF exposure stimulates adrenal steroidogenesis via an increase in intracellular cAMP caused by the inhibition of phosphodiesterase activity in Y-1 cells. The same mechanism may trigger the increase in adrenal steroid secretion in mice observed in our previous study.

Abstract

We attempt to achieve corporative behavior of autonomous decentralized agents constructed via Q-Learning, which is a type of reinforcement learning. As such, in the present paper, we examine the piano mover's problem. We propose a multi-agent architecture that has a training agent, learning agents and intermediate agent. Learning agents are heterogeneous and can communicate with each other. The movement of an object with three kinds of agent depends on the composition of the actions of the learning agents. By learning its own shape through the learning agents, avoidance of obstacles by the object is expected. We simulate the proposed method in a two-dimensional continuous world. Results obtained in the present investigation reveal the effectiveness of the proposed method.

19. Homogenization of understory vegetation by an overabundance of deer (Cervus nippon) in a temperate forest in central Japan

Abstract

Deer browsing is a form of selective disturbance that homogenizes plant community composition and structure. In mountainous regions, disturbance intensity, together with topographical factors, affect plant communities. However, studies on the multiple effects of deer browsing and topographical factors on plant communities are limited. Here, we investigated the effects of deer exclusion on understory vegetation across the upper and lower slopes of a temperate deciduous forest in a mountainous area of Japan. We established six pairs of exclosure and control quadrats, with three pairs at each topographical position. We assessed changes in vegetation and plant structure (coverage and height), species composition, numbers of flowering/fruiting species, and damage to the plant species caused by deer browsing between 2009–2016. Vegetation coverage and the number of flowering/fruiting plant species increased in the exclosure quadrats during the study period, indicating that browsing prevents herb-layer species from reaching the flowering and fruiting stages in this site. Moreover, dissimilarity in species composition between the exclosure and control quadrats increased on the upper slope. However, the dissimilarity between upper and lower slopes in the control quadrats tended to decrease. Large herbs, which mainly include forbs and perennial species, were characteristically abundant on the lower slopes and decreased in the control quadrats on the lower slope. Our results indicate that the exclusion of deer had different effects on the understory vegetation of upper and lower slopes, suggesting that deer overbrowsing weakens the correlation between plant functional traits and topographic factors, resulting in homogenized plant communities.

Abstract

Background Patients with clinically amyopathic dermatomyositis (CADM) with anti-melanoma differentiation-associated gene 5 antibody (anti-MDA5 Ab) frequently develop rapidly progressive interstitial pneumonia (RPIP), often with fatal outcomes. Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) has been reported as effective against CADM-RPIP refractory to conventional immunosuppressive therapy. However, the detailed mechanisms by which TPE improves disease activity of CADM-RPIP remain unclear. Aim To elucidate the clinical and demographic characteristics of patients with anti-MDA5 Ab-positive CADM-RPIP treated with TPE and to analyze changes in laboratory findings before, during, and after TPE. Materials & methods Patients hospitalized for CADM-RPIP and treated with TPE in 2017 and 2018 were analyzed retrospectively. Results Three patients were successfully treated with TPE, with good tolerance. Anti-MDA5 Ab titers decreased significantly over the course of TPE. Conclusion We emphasize that TPE could represent an effective treatment option for CADM-RPIP refractory to traditional therapy. Removal of anti-MDA5 Ab and other pathogenic factors may facilitate favorable outcomes.

Abstract

A new member of the dunaimycin family, dunaimycin C3 (2), was isolated from a fermented broth of Streptomyces sp. RAN389. The molecular formula of 2 was established as C42H70O10 by high-resolution FAB-MS, and the structure was elucidated by NMR spectroscopic analyses. Dunaimycin C3 inhibited the expression of the molecular chaperone GRP78 in HT1080 G-L cells in the presence of 10 mM of 2-deoxyglucose with an IC50 of 8.4 nM.

Abstract

The new cardinalfish Apogon soloriens is described on the basis of nine specimens collected from the Bonin Islands (northern island chain of Ogasawara Islands), Japan. The new species resembles Apogon caudicinctus Randall and Smith 1988 in coloration, lacking a black band below the second dorsal fin but with a black band on the caudal peduncle, but differs in having 13 pectoral-fin rays (vs. 12 rays in A. caudicinctus), greater interorbital width [9.1–11.1% of standard length (mean 9.8%) vs. 6.6–7.9% (7.3%)], and a wider blackish band on the caudal peduncle (vs. narrower black band). A key to the Apogon talboti look-alike group is provided.

Abstract

Large areas of Fukushima's forests were contaminated with radiocesium (137Cs) after the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident. Most of the contaminated forests have not been decontaminated, and bioavailable 137Cs is likely to circulate within the forest environment's food web. Nephila clavata (Nephilidae: Arachnida) is a top predator in the forest arthropod community, and this web-building spider potentially consumes many arthropod species presented in the grazing and detrital food chains. We tested whether 137Cs in the spider could serve as a proxy for 137Cs contamination of these arthropod communities. We also examined whether N. clavata could serve as a proxy for soil bioavailable 137Cs. Nephila clavata was similarly or more contaminated with 137Cs compared with lower-trophic-level arthropods such as herbivores and other predators at the same trophic level. Thus, the 137Cs activity of N. clavata could represent the extent to which the arthropod community was contaminated with 137Cs. Data from nine 137Cs-contaminated sites in Fukushima showed a significant positive correlation between soil bioavailable 137Cs and N. clavata's 137Cs activity05 but the coefficient of determination was only moderate (R2 = 0.43), suggesting that N. clavata is only a weak proxy of soil bioavailable 137Cs. Our results also showed that the bioavailable fraction of 137Cs in Fukushima was strongly correlated with the total inventory and that the K and Na contents of the soil determined the soil-to-spider transfer factor for 137Cs and the 137Cs activity in N. clavata, respectively. These results improve our understanding of 137Cs transfer from the soil to arthropod species.

Abstract

The modern-day Tarim Basin is covered almost entirely by the Taklimakan sand desert and is one of the most arid regions in the world. Unraveling the aridification history of the desert is important for understanding global climate changes during the Cenozoic, yet the timing and mechanisms driving its formation remain controversial. One of the leading hypotheses is that the uplift of the Pamir, located to the west of the Tarim Basin, blocked the intrusion of moist air and induced the aridification in the Tarim Basin. In this study, we explore the linkage between the uplift of the Pamir and the desertification in the Tarim Basin from the late Eocene to the middle Miocene in the Aertashi section, which is located at the southwestern edge of the Tarim Basin and offers the longest sedimentary record with a reliable age model. Provenance changes in fluvial deposits along the Aertashi section were examined using electron spin resonance (ESR) signal intensity and crystallinity index (CI) of quartz in the sand fraction of fluvial sandstones and clast counting based on the identification of clast types by thin section observation to identify timings of tectonic events in the Pamir, from which clastic materials were supplied to the Aertashi section by rivers. Our results suggest that major provenance changes in the drainage of the paleo-Yarkand river delivering clasts to the Aertashi section occurred at ca. 27, 20, and 15 Ma. These timings are mostly consistent with those observed in previous provenance studies in the Aertashi section and probably reflect tectonic events in the Pamir. On the other hand, according to the previous studies, the first occurrence of sand dune deposits indicates that the Tarim Basin was relatively arid after ca. 34 Ma. Hence, our result does not support the hypothesis that the initial aridification in the Tarim Basin was triggered by the uplift of the Pamir and the resultant blocking of moisture supply from the Paratethys Sea, although the subsequent intensification of tectonic events at ca. 27 Ma in the Pamir might have caused aridification indicated by the initiation of loess deposition.

Abstract

OBJECTIVES: Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PJP) is associated with significant morbidity and mortality in adult myositis patients; however, there are few studies examining PJP in juvenile myositis [juvenile idiopathic inflammatory myopathy (JIIM)]. The purpose of this study was to determine the risk factors and clinical phenotypes associated with PJP in JIIM. METHODS: An research electronic data capture (REDCap) questionnaire regarding myositis features, disease course, medications and PJP infection characteristics was completed by treating physicians for 13 JIIM patients who developed PJP (PJP+) from the USA and Canada. Myositis features and medications were compared with 147 JIIM patients without PJP (PJP–) from similar geographic regions who enrolled in National Institutes of Health natural history studies. RESULTS: PJP+ patients were more often of Asian ancestry than PJP– patients [odds ratio (OR) 8.7; 95% CI 1.3, 57.9]. Anti- melanoma differentiation associated protein 5 (MDA5) autoantibodies (OR 12.5; 95% CI 3.0, 52.4), digital infarcts (OR 43.8; 95% CI 4.2, 460.2), skin ulcerations (OR 12.0; 95% CI 3.5, 41.2) and interstitial lung disease (OR 10.6; 95% CI 2.1, 53.9) were more frequent in PJP+ patients. Before PJP diagnosis, patients more frequently received pulse steroids, rituximab and more immunosuppressive therapy compared with PJP– patients. Seven PJP+ patients were admitted to the intensive care unit and four patients died due to PJP or its complications. CONCLUSIONS: PJP is a severe infection in JIIM that can be associated with mortality. Having PJP was associated with more immunosuppressive therapy, anti-MDA5 autoantibodies, Asian race and certain clinical features, including digital infarcts, cutaneous ulcerations and interstitial lung disease. Prophylaxis for PJP should be considered in juvenile myositis patients with these features.

The new species is most similar to the Red Sea species G. melanogaster Gon and Golani 2002 (known only from two specimens) in having 9 soft dorsal-fin rays, 8 soft anal-fin rays, and 13 total gill rakers, but differs in having 16 pectoral-fin rays (vs. 14 or 15 rays in G. melanogaster), body depth 12.0–15.1% of SL (mean 14.2%) (vs. 21.7–24.0%), eye diameter 5.2–6.1% (5.6%) (vs. 10.0–11.6%), interorbital width 3.7–4.4% (4.0%) (vs. 5.7–8.2%), and longest pelvic-fin soft ray length 12.0–15.6% (14.1%) (vs. 25.4–34.3%).

Herein, we performed ab initio screening to identify the best doping of LiNiO2 to achieve improved cycle performance in lithium ion batteries. The interlayer interaction that dominates the c-axis contraction and overall performance was captured well by density functional theory using van der Waals exchange-correlation functionals. The screening indicated that Nb-doping is promising for improving cycle performance. To extract qualitative reasonings, we performed data analysis in a materials informatics manner to obtain a reasonable regression to reproduce the obtained results. The new species resembles Ostorhinchus gularis (Fraser and Lachner 1984) and Ostorhinchus atrogaster (Smith and Radcliffe in Radcliffe 1912) in body coloration, lacking distinct stripes on the lateral surface and a distinct blotch on the caudal-fin base, but differs in having 24–28 (modally 26) developed gill rakers, 25–31 (modally 28) total gill rakers (including rudiments), the body depth 21.9–28.4% of SL (mean 24.1%) and upper-jaw length 12.3–15.5% (13.5%). Apogon smithvanizi Allen and Randall 1994 is reconfirmed as a junior synonym of O. gularis. Although the new species is superficially similar to a co-occurring species Rhabdamia gracilis (Bleeker 1856) in overall body appearance, numerous differences exist between the two species.

The new cardinalfish Rhabdamia novaluna sp. nov. (Apogonidae) is described on the basis of 79 specimens collected from the western Pacific Ocean. The new species is most similar to the Indo-West Pacific species Rhabdamia gracilis (Bleeker 1856) in having VI-I, 9 dorsal-fin rays, II, 12 anal-fin rays and 13 pectoral-fin rays, and lacking blackish blotches on the opercle and anterior portion of the body. However, the former can be distinguished from R. gracilis by having 26–31 (modally 28–29) developed gill rakers, 27–31 (modally 28) total gill rakers (including rudiments), body depth at second dorsal-fin origin 25.5–33.1% of SL (mean 30.2%) and a subdermal black blotch or spot on the lower caudal peduncle. Three nominal species, Apogonichthys nudus Regan 1905, Apogonichthys mentalis Evermann and Seale 1907 and Rhabdamia clupeiformis Weber 1909, are regarded as junior synonyms of R. gracilis. A key to species of Rhabdamia is provided.

49. Preventing mood disorders associated with suicide-related behaviors among small- and medium-size enterprise workers in Japan

Abstract

Background: While the suicide rate in Japan has recently declined, it is still high from a global perspective. Recently, suicides related to unemployment caused by COVID-19 have increased. In addition, because of increases in karoshi and industrial accidents, mental health measures for workers have become an urgent issue. We previously conducted a study that tested whether screening for mood disorders, which were strongly associated with suicide-related behavior, helps prevent suicide in small and medium-size enterprise workers, where mental health support was insufficient. The current study builds on 2 the previous study’s findings that mental illness screening helps identify mood disorders and may provide a primary prevention method for suicide. Methods: A total of 1,411 consenting workers were surveyed using the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI). A representative module of each disease item was extracted and analyzed. The Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression (CES-D), Bipolar Spectrum Diagnostic Scale (BSDS), Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS-J), and the Sheehan Disability Scale (SDISS) were used as secondary assessments. We compared individuals with depression, bipolar disorder, dysthymia, and mood disorders with a control group. In addition, we conducted multivariate analyses to investigate items that identified individuals with depression, mood dysregulation, bipolar disorder, or all-inclusive mood disorders. Results The adjusted odds ratios in the anxiety disorders groups were 3.2 for panic disorder, 2.6 for social anxiety disorder, 2.1 for agoraphobia, and 1.8 for generalized anxiety disorder; 2.1 for obsessive compulsive disorders; and 2.8 for the bulimia nervosa group. These results show a significant correlation with mental illnesses that are referred to as neuroses in a conventional diagnosis. Conclusion: The study found that screening for anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders and eating disorders contributes to preventing mood disorders among workers. We hope that our findings will indirectly contribute to preventing workers’ suicides.

50. Protective effect of different doses of trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole prophylaxis for early severe infections among patients with antineutrophil cytoplasmic autoantibody-associated vasculitis

Abstract

To analyse the protective effect of different doses of trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP/SMX) prophylaxis for early severe infections in antineutrophil cytoplasmic autoantibody-associated vasculitis (AAV), considering time-varying changes.In this retrospective observational study, we assessed the protective effect of TMP/SMX within the first 6 months of diagnosis among Japanese patients with AAV. We included 250 consecutive patients with AAV who were admitted to our hospital. The protective effect of TMP/SMX against early severe infections was verified using Cox regression analysis along with potential confounding factors. Cox regression with inverse probability treatment weights for early severe infections was also performed as a sensitivity analysis.Cox regression analysis showed that the reduced TMP/SMX exposure group had a significant protective effect against early severe infections (standard-dose group versus no TMP/SMX group: hazard ratio [HR] 0.393, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.139-1.11, p=0.077; reduced-dose group versus no TMP/SMX group: HR 0.418, 95%CI: 0.216-0.807, p=0.009), even when considering time-dependent changes. In the sensitivity analysis, the reduced-dose group still had a significantly lower risk of early severe infections than the no TMP/SMX group (HR = 0.393, 95%CI: 0.177-0.873, p=0.022). During follow-up, 18.0% of the patients discontinued TMP/SMX due to side effects.TMP/SMX is highly effective in preventing severe infections among patients with AAV despite the high incidence of side effects. Further studies are needed to determine the optimal dose of TMP/SMX for preventing severe infections, especially considering renal impairment.
