Abstract

The possible existence of deeply-bound $\bar K$-nuclear bound states, kaonic nuclei, has been widely discussed as products of the strongly attractive $\bar K$Ninteraction in I = 0 channels. Investigations of those exotic states will provide us unique information of the $\bar K$Ninteraction below the threshold, which is still not fully understood so far. Recently, we observed the simplest kaonic nuclei, $\bar K$NN, having a much deeper binding energy than normal nuclei via inflight (K−,N) reactions at the J-PARC E15 experiment. For further studies, we have proposed a series of experimental programs for the systematic investigation of light kaonic nuclei, from $\bar K$N(Λ(1405)) to $\bar K$NNNN. We will measure the $\bar K$NNN(A= 3) system at the new experiment approved as J-PARC E80, as a first step toward a comprehensive study.

3. Status and Perspectives of J-PARC

Abstract

In the Hadron Experimental Hall of J-PARC, several experiments on strangeness nuclear physics are in progress with producing new results. Construction of a new high-momentum beam line was completed in June, 2020. A new production target system was also installed, in the end of 2020, to improve the intensity of the $$K^-$$ beams delivered in the hall. It will be effective to conduct the strangeness-2 physics program. Some recent topics are introduced together with the status of on-going experiments. The hadron hall extension program in the future is also discussed briefly.

Abstract

Investigations of double- $$\Lambda $$ hypernuclei, which contain two $$\Lambda $$ hyperons in a nucleus, provide valuable information on baryon–baryon interaction in the strangeness $$-2$$ sector, such as the $$\Lambda $$ – $$\Lambda $$ interaction. Whereas several double- $$\Lambda $$ hypernuclei have been discovered in nuclear-emulsion experiments, an experimental observation of $${}_{\Lambda \Lambda }^{5}$$ H is awaited. It is not only because $$_{\Lambda \Lambda }^{5}$$ H is theoretically expected to be the lightest bound state, but also because $$\Lambda \Lambda $$ – $$\Xi N$$ coupling may play an important role in its structure. On the other hand, the coupling effect may be suppressed in $$_{\Lambda \Lambda }^{6}{\mathrm {He}}$$ .We propose an experiment to investigate $$_{\Lambda \Lambda }^{5}$$ H at J-PARC. $$_{\Lambda \Lambda }^{5}$$ H will be produced by a decay of a $$\Xi $$ hypernucleus, $$_\Xi ^{7}$$ H, which can be produced by the $$^7\mathrm {Li}(K^-,K^+)$$ reaction. The mass of $$_{\Lambda \Lambda }^{5}$$ H will be determined by means of decay pion spectroscopy; it can be calculated from the measured momentum of decay pions, owing to a two-body decay of $$_{\Lambda \Lambda }^{5}$$ H.

Abstract

We observed a distinct peak in the Λp invariant mass spectrum of He 3 ( K − , Λ p ) n , well below m K + 2 m p , i.e., the mass threshold of the K − to be bound to two protons. By selecting a relatively large momentum-transfer region q = 350 ∼ 650 MeV/c, one can kinematically separate the peak from the quasi-free process, K ‾ N → K ‾ N followed by the non-resonant absorption by the two spectator-nucleons K ‾ N N → Λ N . We found that the simplest fit to the observed peak gives us a Breit–Wigner pole position at B Kpp = 47 ± 3 ( s t a t . ) − 6 + 3 ( s y s . ) MeV having a width Γ Kpp = 115 ± 7 ( s t a t . ) − 20 + 10 ( s y s . ) MeV, and the S-wave Gaussian reaction form-factor parameter Q Kpp = 381 ± 14 ( s t a t . ) − 0 + 57 ( s y s . ) MeV/c, as a new form of the nuclear bound system with strangeness – “ K − p p ”.

Abstract

$\bar K$-nuclear bound systems, kaonic nuclei, have been widely discussed as products of the strongly attractive $\bar K N$ interaction in $I = 0$ channels. Recently, we demonstrated that kaonic nuclei can be produced via in-flight $(K^-,N)$ reactions using the low-momentum DC kaon beam at the J-PARC E15 experiment. We observed the simplest kaonic nuclei, $K^-pp$, having a much deeper binding energy than normal nuclei. For further studies, we have proposed a series of experimental programs for the systematic investigation of light kaonic nuclei, from $\bar K N$ ($\Lambda(1405)$) to $\bar K NNNN$. 9. Progress in strangeness nuclear physics at J-PARC

Abstract

In this article, recent experimental topics obtained at J-PARC are discussed. Owing to beam power increase of the J-PARC main proton synchrotron, the K− beam intensity of more than 5 × 105/spill with a repetition rate of 5.52 sec. was available at the K1.8 beam line. It enabled us to study not only strangeness S = −1 systems but also S = −2 systems such as double-Λ hypernuclei and Ξ hypernuclei.

Abstract

We have measured, for the first time, the inclusive missing-mass spectrum of the $^{12}$C$(K^-, p)$ reaction at an incident kaon momentum of 1.8 GeV/$c$ at the J-PARC K1.8 beamline. We observed a prominent quasi-elastic peak ($K^-p \rightarrow K^-p$) in this spectrum. In the quasi-elastic peak region, the effect of secondary interaction is apparently observed as a peak shift, and the peak exhibits a tail in the bound region. We compared the spectrum with a theoretical calculation based on the Green’s function method by assuming different values of the parameters for the $\bar{K}$–nucleus optical potential. We found that the spectrum shape in the binding-energy region $-300 \, \text{MeV} < B_{K} < 40$ MeV is best reproduced with the potential depths $V_0 = -80$ MeV (real part) and $W_0 = -40$ MeV (imaginary part). On the other hand, we observed a significant event excess in the deeply bound region around $B_{K} \sim 100$ MeV, where the major decay channel of $K^- NN \to \pi\Sigma N$ is energetically closed, and the non-mesonic decay modes ($K^- NN \to \Lambda N$ and $\Sigma N$) should mainly contribute. The enhancement is fitted well by a Breit–Wigner function with a kaon-binding energy of 90 MeV and width 100 MeV. A possible interpretation is a deeply bound state of a $Y^{*}$-nucleus system.

Abstract

We present direct photon-hadron correlations in 200 GeV/A Au+Au, d+Au, and p+p collisions, for direct photon pT from 5–12 GeV/c, collected by the PHENIX Collaboration in the years from 2006 to 2011. We observe no significant modification of jet fragmentation in d+Au collisions, indicating that cold nuclear matter effects are small or absent. Hadrons carrying a large fraction of the quark's momentum are suppressed in Au+Au compared to p+p and d+Au. As the momentum fraction decreases, the yield of hadrons in Au+Au increases to an excess over the yield in p+p collisions. The excess is at large angles and at low hadron pT and is most pronounced for hadrons associated with lower momentum direct photons. Comparison to theoretical calculations suggests that the hadron excess arises from medium response to energy deposited by jets.

Abstract

We have performed an exclusive measurement of the K-+He3→Λpn reaction at an incident kaon momentum of 1GeV/c. In the Λp invariant mass spectrum, a clear peak was observed below the mass threshold of K+N+N, as a signal of the kaonic nuclear bound state, KNN. The binding energy, decay width, and S-wave Gaussian reaction form factor of this state were observed to be BK=42±3(stat.)-4+3(syst.)MeV, ΓK=100±7(stat.)-9+19(syst.)MeV, and QK=383±11(stat.)-1+4(syst.)MeV/c, respectively. The total production cross section of KNN, determined by its Λp decay mode, was σKtotBRΛp=9.3±0.8(stat.)-1.0+1.4(syst.)μb. We estimated the branching ratio of the KNN state to the Λp and ς0p decay modes as BRΛp/BRς0p∼1.7, by assuming that the physical processes leading to the ςNN final states are analogous to those of Λpn. © 2020 American Physical Society. Abstract

The K¯NN bound system, symbolically denoted as “K−pp”, is the simplest K¯-nuclear bound system which has been widely discussed as a consequence of the strongly attractive K¯N interaction in I = 0 channels. Many theoretical works have pointed out the existence of the “K−pp” bound system, but the calculated properties such as the binding energy and the width spread out due to the uncertainty of the K¯N interaction below the K¯+N mass threshold. Experimentally, there are several reports on observation of a “K−pp” candidate with the binding energy of around 100 MeV, however, no definitive evidence was available so far. At J-PARC, we conducted a experimental search for the “K−pp” bound system using K− + 3He reaction at 1.0 GeV/c where the “K−pp” is expected to be directly produced via the (K−, n) reaction. We finally observed a bound state below the K− +p+p mass threshold in the Λpn final state, which can be interpreted as the “K− pp” bound state. The possible existence of the “K− pp” state is discussed from both aspects of production and decay.

Abstract

The J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility was constructed with an aim to explore the origin and evolution of matter in the universe through experiments with intense particle beams. In the past decade, many results from particle and nuclear physics experiments have been obtained at the present facility. To expand the physics programs to as yet unexplored regions, the extension project of the Hadron Experimental Facility has been extensively discussed. This contribution presents the physics of the extension of the Hadron Experimental Facility to resolve issues related to strangeness nuclear physics, hadron physics, and flavor physics.

Abstract

In the K1.8 beam-line at Hadron Experimental Facility of J-PARC, a new magnetic spectrometer S-2S is being installed. S-2S was designed to achieve a high momentum resolution of Δp/p = 6 × 10−4 in FWHM. Several strangeness-physics programs which require the high resolution will be realized by S-2S. The present article introduces J-PARC E70 (missing-mass spectroscopy of Ξ12Be) and E94 (missing-mass spectroscopy of Λ7Li, Λ10B, and Λ12C) experiments.

20. High resolution spectroscopy of the 'ΣN cusp' by using the d(K−, π−) reaction

Abstract

We present a new proposal, J-PARC E90, to measure a missing-mass spectrum near the ΣN threshold for the d(K−, π−) reactions at 1.4 GeV/c. While many previous experiments support apparent enhancement near the ΣN thresh-old, the dynamical origin of this so-called “ΣN cusp” remains yet unsolved. The enhancement suggests either a cusp structure or a weakly bound state. One of the keys to making it clear is improving the missing-mass resolution and statistics. Our new experiment can achieve the missing-mass resolution of 0.4 MeV in σ using the K1.8 beam line and S-2S spectrometers at J-PARC. Further-more, we can suppress quasi-free background processes with the time projection chamber (HypTPC), which operated nicely for the H-dibaryon search experi-ment (J-PARC E42). The J-PARC E90 aims to extract the scattering length of the ΣN system with isospin T = 1/2 and spin-triplet channels.

Abstract

We developed a neutron detector with submicron spatial resolution by incorporating 6 Li into a fine-grained nuclear emulsion. Upon exposure to thermal neutrons, tracks from neutron capture events were observed. The detector spatial resolution was estimated from their grain density. Detection efficiency was measured using the detector response to cold neutrons.

Abstract

Double-Λ hypernuclei provide invaluable information on Λ–Λ interaction, as a scattering experiment with a hyperon target is impossible. For more than half a century, double-Λ hypernuclei have been searched for by using nuclear emulsion. We will propose a novel counter experiment (J-PARC P75 experiment), aiming at investigating a light double-Λ hypernucleus, \(_{\Lambda \Lambda }^{\ \ \ 5}\text{H}\). The ΛΛ binding energy will be determined by decay pion spectroscopy. The experimental method of production and identification of \(_{\Lambda \Lambda }^{\ \ \ 5}\text{H}\) is discussed.

Abstract

The PHENIX collaboration presents first measurements of low-momentum ($0.4$1\,GeV/$c$) direct-photon yield $dN_{\gamma}^{\rm dir}/d\eta$ is a smooth function of $dN_{\rm ch}/d\eta$ and can be well described as proportional to $(dN_{\rm ch}/d\eta)^\alpha$ with $\alpha{\approx}1.25$. This scaling behavior holds for a wide range of beam energies at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and the Large Hadron Collider, for centrality selected samples, as well as for different, $A$$+$$A$ collision systems. At a given beam energy the scaling also holds for high $p_T$ ($>5$\,GeV/$c$) but when results from different collision energies are compared, an additional $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$-dependent multiplicative factor is needed to describe the integrated-direct-photon yield., Comment: 673 authors from 82 institutions, 10 pages, 4 figures. v2 is version accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters. Abstract

We outline the concept of a proposed experiment (P75) at J-PARC, whose aim is to investigate the double-Λ hypernucleus HΛΛ5 by using the 7Li(K−, K+) reactions. In particular, the production of HΛΛ5 via the decay of HΞ−7 and decay pion spectroscopy of HΛΛ5 after removing a background from the single-Λ hypernucleus HΛ4 are highlighted.

Abstract

We have measured an inclusive missing-mass spectrum of the 12 C(K−, p) reaction over wide energy region at the kaon incident momentum of 1.8 GeV/c at J-PARC K1.8 beam line. This measurement was carried out as a by-product of a pilot run of J-PARC E05 experiment, which searched for the Ξ-hypernuclei via 12C(K−, K+) reaction. We have compared the observed missing-mass spectrum with a DWIA calculation to study the K-nucleus interaction. In this comparison, we have changed the depth of both real and imaginary parts of the optical potential between the K and nucleus. It is found that the observed spectrum is best reproduced by the calculation of the potential depth of V0 ∼ −80 MeV (real part) and W0 ∼ −40 MeV (imaginary part). On the other hand, we have observed a definitive excess around the deeply bound region BK ≳ 100 MeV. The excess cannot be explained by the any optical potential and quasi-free background reaction. It is well fitted with a Breit-Wigner function with a binding energy of 90 MeV and a width of 100 MeV, which can be interpreted as a deeply bound Λ(1405) nucleus.

For the full understanding of baryon-baryon interactions in flavor SU(3), the ΞN interaction is the last missing piece of information. So far, we have revealed the ΛN interaction to be attractive (UΛ ≈ 30 MeV), and ΣN interaction to be repulsive in the medium to heavy mass-number region. The ΛΛ bonding energy is weakly attractive. Abstract

Experimental results from the J-PARC E13 experiments are summarized. A new experimental set up of E13 has established a platform for the future γ-ray hypernuclear spectroscopy at J-PARC using kaon beams. New γ rays are identified in HeΛ4 and FΛ19. The energy of 1.406 MeV for the HeΛ4(1+→0+) transition confirmed a sizable effect of Charge Symmetry Breaking (CSB) in ΛN interaction in the A=4 hypernuclear system. The identification of four γ rays in FΛ19 is made for the first time in sd shell hypernuclei. Especially, energy spacing of the ground state doublet is found to be 315.5 keV. A good agreement with two theoretical calculations suggests that the theoretical formalism used in p shell hypernuclei is also applicable to heavier hypernuclei. Lastly, an overview of the future J-PARC E63 experiment is given.

Abstract

The structure of the Λ(1405) hyperon is an important and long-standing issue related to the K-nucleus interaction. The J-PARC E31 experiment has been performed to investigate the Λ(1405) spectrum shape. Because it is hard to form the Λ(1405) directly by a KN scattering in free space, E31 uses the d(K-, n) reaction with an incident kaon momentum of 1 GeV/c. We will identify three final states - ς-π+, ς+π-, ς0π0-so that the isospin structure of hyperon resonance states produced can be decomposed. The first physics run of the E31 experiment was performed in 2016. To enhance the statistics of the data set, we have performed the second physics run in the beginning of 2018. During the second run of E31, around 3.9×1010 kaons impacted on the deuteron target.

Abstract

We have investigated the π + + d → K + + X reaction at 1.69 GeV/ c at the hadron experimental hall of J-PARC. Systems with baryon number B = 2 and strangeness S = − 1 are produced in this reaction. Owing to the very wide momentum acceptance of the spectrometer, we were able to search from the Λ N threshold to above the K ¯ N N threshold, which covers the energy region where the K − p p bound state and/or the Σ ( 1385 ) N bound state could show up. We observed a significant shift of the quasi-free Σ ( 1385 ) / Λ ( 1405 ) production peak by approximately 30 MeV to the lighter mass side. Further, with the coincidence of two protons in the final state, a broad bump structure was observed with a mass and width of 2275 − 18 + 17 (stat.) − 30 + 21 (syst.) MeV / c 2 and 162 − 45 + 87 (stat.) − 78 + 66 (syst.) MeV coming from the K − p p → Σ 0 + p decay.

Abstract

The missing mass spectroscopy of Ξ − hypernuclei with the ( K − , K + ) reaction is planned to be performed at the J-PARC K1.8 beam line by using a new magnetic spectrometer, Strangeness -2 Spectrometer (S-2S). A Cerenkov detector with a radiation medium of pure water (refractive index of 1.33) is designed to be used for on-line proton rejection for a momentum range of 1.2–1.6 GeV/c in S-2S. Prototype water Cerenkov detectors were developed and tested with positron beams and cosmic rays to estimate their proton-rejection capability. We achieved an average number of photoelectrons of greater than 200 with the latest prototype for cosmic rays, which was stable during an expected beam time of one month. The performance of the prototype in the cosmic-ray test was well reproduced with a Monte Carlo simulation in which some input parameters were adjusted. Based on the Monte Carlo simulation, we expect to achieve > 90 % proton-rejection efficiency while maintaining > 95 % K + survival ratio in the whole S-2S acceptance. The performance satisfies the requirements to conduct the spectroscopic study of Ξ − hypernuclei at J-PARC.

Abstract

Production of π0 and η mesons has been measured at midrapidity in Cu+Au collisions at sNN=200GeV. Measurements were performed in π0(η)→γγ decay channel in the 1(2)-20GeV/c transverse momentum range. A strong suppression is observed for π0 and η meson production at high transverse momentum in central Cu+Au collisions relative to the p+p results scaled by the number of nucleon-nucleon collisions. In central collisions the suppression is similar to Au+Au with comparable nuclear overlap. The η/π0 ratio measured as a function of transverse momentum is consistent with mT-scaling parametrization down to pT=2GeV/c, its asymptotic value is constant and consistent with Au+Au and p+p and does not show any significant dependence on collision centrality. Similar results were obtained in hadron-hadron, hadron-nucleus, and nucleus-nucleus collisions as well as in e+e− collisions in a range of collision energies sNN=3−1800 GeV. This suggests that the quark-gluon-plasma medium produced in Cu+Cu collisions either does not affect the jet fragmentation into light mesons or it affects the π0 and η the same way.

Abstract

We have measured the cross section and single-spin asymmetries from forward W±→μ±ν production in longitudinally polarized p+p collisions at s=510 GeV using the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The cross sections are consistent with previous measurements at this collision energy, while the most forward and backward longitudinal single spin asymmetries provide new insights into the sea quark helicities in the proton. The charge of the W bosons provides a natural flavor separation of the participating partons. © 2018 authors. Published by the American Physical Society.

Abstract

We present a detailed measurement of charged two- pion correlation functions in 0–30% centrality sNN=200 GeV Au+Au collisions by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The data are well described by Bose- Einstein correlation functions stemming from Levy-stable source distributions. Using a fine transverse momentum binning, we extract the correlation strength parameter λ, the Levy index of stability α, and the Levy length scale parameter R as a function of average transverse mass of the pair mT. We find that the positively and the negatively charged pion pairs yield consistent results, and their correlation functions are represented, within uncertainties, by the same Levy-stable source functions. The λ(mT) measurements indicate a decrease of the strength of the correlations at low mT. The Levy length scale parameter R(mT) decreases with increasing mT, following a hydrodynamically predicted type of scaling behavior. The values of the Levy index of stability α are found to be significantly lower than the Gaussian case of α=2, but also significantly larger than the conjectured value that may characterize the critical point of a second-order quark-hadron phase transition.

Abstract

We report on the first observation of γ rays emitted from an sd-shell hypernucleus, _{Λ}^{19}F. The energy spacing between the ground state doublet, 1/2^{+} and 3/2^{+} states, of _{Λ}^{19}F is determined to be 315.5±0.4(stat)_{-0.5}^{+0.6}(syst) keV by measuring the γ-ray energy of the M1(3/2^{+}→1/2^{+}) transition. In addition, three γ-ray peaks are observed and assigned as E2(5/2^{+}→1/2^{+}), E1(1/2^{-}→1/2^{+}), and E1(1/2^{-}→3/2^{+}) transitions. The excitation energies of the 5/2^{+} and 1/2^{-} states are determined to be 895.2±0.3(stat)±0.5(syst) and 1265.6±1.2(stat)_{-0.5}^{+0.7}(syst) keV, respectively. It is found that the ground state doublet spacing is well described by theoretical models based on existing s- and p-shell hypernuclear data.

Abstract

Excitation-energy spectra of $^{11}\mathrm{C}$ nuclei near the ${\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$-meson production threshold have been measured by missing-mass spectroscopy using the $^{12}\mathrm{C}(p,d)$ reaction. A carbon target has been irradiated with a 2.5 GeV proton beam supplied by the synchrotron SIS-18 at GSI to produce ${\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$-meson bound states in $^{11}\mathrm{C}$ nuclei. Deuterons emitted at ${0}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$ in the reaction have been momentum analyzed by the fragment separator (FRS), used as a high-resolution spectrometer. No distinct structure due to the formation of ${\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$-mesic states is observed although a high statistical sensitivity is achieved in the experimental spectra. Upper limits on the formation cross sections of ${\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$-mesic states are determined, and thereby a constraint imposed on the ${\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$-nucleus interaction is discussed.

Abstract

"Neutron Optics and Physics (NOP/ BL05)" at MLF in J-PARC is a beamline for studies of fundamental physics. The beamline is divided into three branches so that different experiments can be performed in parallel. These beam branches are being used to develop a variety of new projects. We are developing an experimental project to measure the neutron lifetime with total uncertainty of 1 s (0.1%). The neutron lifetime is an important parameter in elementary particle and astrophysics. Thus far, the neutron lifetime has been measured by several groups; however, different values are obtained from different measurement methods. This experiment is using a method with different sources of systematic uncertainty than measurements conducted to date. We are also developing a source of pulsed ultra-cold neutrons (UCNs) produced from a Doppler shifter are available at the unpolarized beam branch. We are developing a time focusing device for UCNs, a so called "rebuncher", which can increase UCN density from a pulsed UCN source. At the low divergence beam branch, an experiment to search an unknown intermediate force with nanometer range is performed by measuring the angular dependence of neutron scattering by noble gases. Finally the beamline is also used for the research and development of optical elements and detectors. For example, a position sensitive neutron detector that uses emulsion to achieve sub-micrometer resolution is currently under development. Abstract

The fraction of J/ψ mesons which come from B-meson decay, FB→J/ψ, is measured for J/ψ rapidity 1.20 in p+p and Cu+Au collisions at sNN = 200 GeV with the PHENIX detector. The extracted fraction is FB→J/ψ=0.025±0.006 (stat) ± 0.010(syst) for p+p collisions. For Cu+Au collisions, FB→J/ψ is 0.094 ± 0.028(stat) ± 0.037(syst) in the Au-going direction (-2.2

Abstract

The antikaon-nucleon interaction close to threshold provides crucial information on the interplay between spontaneous and explicit chiral symmetry breaking in low-energy QCD. In this context the importance of kaonic deuterium X-ray spectroscopy has been well recognized, but no experimental results have yet been obtained due to the difficulty of the measurement. We propose to measure the shift and width of the kaonic deuterium 1s state with an accuracy of 60 eV and 140 eV respectively at J-PARC. These results together with the kaonic hydrogen data (KpX at KEK, DEAR and SIDDHARTA at DAFNE) will then permit the determination of values of both the isospin I=0 and I=1 antikaon-nucleon scattering lengths and will provide the most stringent constraints on the antikaon-nucleon interaction, promising a breakthrough. Refined Monte Carlo studies were performed, including the investigation of background suppression factors for the described setup. These studies have demonstrated the feasibility of determining the shift and width of the kaonic deuterium atom 1s state with the desired accuracy of 60 eV and 140 eV., 12 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

We have been developing neutron detectors with spatial resolution of submicron to several tens of nanometers using fine-grained nuclear emulsion with nuclides with large neutron absorption cross sections such as 6Li and 10B. Those detectors were demonstrated their ability to detect cold and ultra-cold neutrons.
