We investigated the amount and the pattern of physical activities measured by a calorie counter (the pedometer with the multi-memory accelerometer, Kenz Life Corder) during the extramural practice of food service. The subject was conducted by 41 junior college students (4 men and 37 women). The following results were obtained. The amount of daily activity during the practices was almost the same as the amount during the weekdays. If it was limited to the practice time (from 9 to 17), the amount of activities (the movement strength index) during the practice was higher than the amount during the weekdays. Comparing the each facility where students practiced, the highest amount was shown at the office (company or high school) and the lowest was at the catering centers. Generally, the activity pattern in the morning was higher than that of the afternoon, and the highest activity pattern could be seen right before the lunch. We would like to offer students these results so that they can prepared well for future practices.

- Abstract
We carried out the health education mainly on practical exercise and experience in the graduation seminar. Nine female junior college students (average aged 19.3 yrs) measured one's own form and body composition, and recorded nutrition (energy, nutrient) and exercise (energy, number of steps). Then, they experienced the healthy sports. The following fact was clarified. 1. Three examples were obese subject over BMI 25. 2. In the diet survey for seven days, energy, calcium, and iron were more insufficient than the recommended dietary allowances. The energetic ratio was high for fat with 34%, and it was a problem. 3. During six months, we attempted the improvement on the lifestyle in dietary and exercise. As the result, there was the improvement of the anthropometry in several cases.

A high degree of interest in the nutrition for persons doing sports or "sports nutrition" is shown among students of this college by a questionnaire previously implemented. From a diet survey we carried out on several students doing physical activities, it was made clear that meals ant eating habits were not necessarily desirable. In such a background circumstances, we consider it important to fulfill and satisfy their interest on "sports nutrition" to study better way of taking meals for such students. As an activity for such purposes, we started the party for the lovers of "cooking for Athletes" (aikoukai) in April, 1999. The party acquired the assessment of good achievements and has promoted to the circle for students having taste in"cooking for Athletes"(do ko kai) in 2001. The circle is looking forward to the day when it becomes a club (bu). Members of the circle come together once a week.

We measured the energy intake and nutrient balance in outdoor activity camps opened for 5 days and 4 nights. The subjects were 40 junior college students (4 men and 13 women in summer camp, 7 men and 16 women in winter camp). The following results were obtained. 1) The ratio for the recommended allowance of energy intake of the 4-day average in the summer camp was 85%, and it fell below standard 100%. Therefore, there were 6 items (fat, carbohydrate, calcium, iron, vitamin 62, vitamin C) in the nutrient which did not reach 100%. From this fact, the guidance which sufficiently took the breakfast the future seemed to be the necessity in order to supplement the shortage in the nutrient (especially, carbohydrate and calcium ). Still, it seems that there is no problem on most menus concerning the nutrient balance. However, the ratio for the recommended allowance of iron intake remained only at 49% in the second meal. Therefore, it seems to be necessary that we will reexamine the menu in future. 2) The ratio for the recommended allowance of energy intake of the 4-day average in the winter camp was 105%, and it was almost correspondent to the recommended allowance. The nutrient in which the ratio was lower than 100% was the 2 items of carbohydrate (84%) and calcium (89%). However, there were about 1.5 times of the recommended allowances in both of fat (142%) and protein (152%). Still, it is considered that it was an allowance, though protein intake was high. In the future, we want to examine the menu over the value of this camp with much vitamin C considering cold prevention and reduction in the mental stress, etc..

We measured the amount of physical activities, the intake of diet and weights, and obtained information by means of questionnaires of diet, in winter camps opened for five days and four nights in 1999, of 47 junior college students (22 men and 25 women). The following results were obtained. 1) The mean steps counted by a pedometer (Kenz Calorie Counter Select 2) were about 10,000~13,000/day. 2) The intake of energy and protein, calculated from 5 day-food records filled by all participants, corresponded approximately to the energy expediture of each subject. 3) The mean weights showed less change during five days. 4) Most participants felt that the meals in camps were more delicious than the usual meals. In coming camps, it is necessary to make menus for moderating intestinal and energy metabolic disorders and preventing cold.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the reliability of the acceleration index of the vertical shocks measured by a calorie counter (Kenz Life Corder)during walking various slopes. Twelve subjects (6 men and 6 women) aged 50-70 yrs hiked a course that had a variety of ups and downs while wearing the calorie counter at the waist. Main findings of the study were as follows ; 1) During the steep slope walking, the sum of the acceleration index was significantly higher during the downs compared to the ups. 2) During the milder slope walking, the sum of the acceleration index was not significantly different between the ups and downs. These results suggest that the reliability of the calorie counter is questionable when walking steep ups and downs, and we should use it with caution.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the validity of a calorie counter (Kenz Calorie Counter Select 2) for the estimation of energy expenditure during walking slopes and stairs. Subjects were 60 students (21 men and 39 women) who worked out on a regular basis. The main findings of this study are as follows; 1) The mean difference in the value of energy expenditure during level, slope (up or down), and stairs (up or down) walking between the calorie counter and that measured by oxygen uptake was 0.019, -0.029, 0.050, -0.049, and 0.055 kcal/kg/min, respectively for men. For women, the mean difference was 0.027, -0.017, 0.053, -0.042, and 0.061 kcal/kg/min, respectively. The energy expenditure by the calorie counter was significantly higher than that measured by oxygen uptake for level, downslope, and downstairs walking, but was significantly lower for upslope and upstairs walking. 2) The mean differences (percentage) in the value of energy expenditure of up and down slope walking and stairs walking between the two methods were 0.010 kcal/kg/min (11.8%), and -0.003 kcal/kg/min (3.2%), respectively for men and 0.018 kcal/kg/min (21.4%), and 0.009 kcal/kg/min (9.7%), respectively for women. The differences were smaller for the stairs walking compared to the slope walking. These results suggested that the estimation of energy expenditure during walking with slopes and stairs by the calorie counter included some errors.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the validity of a calorie counter (Kenz Calorie Counter Select 2) for estimation of daily energy expenditure. The daily energy expenditure values by the calorie counter were compared with the values of the time-study and the 24 h heart rate methods using seven young women who work out on a regular basis. The main findings of this study are as follows ; 1) The mean (± SD) value of daily energy expenditure obtained by the calorie counter, time-study, and 24 h heart rate method was 2,162 ± 236 kcal, 2,346 ± 269 kcal, 2,225 ± 449 kcal, respectively. These values were not significantly different, althouth the value of the calorie counter methods appeared to be a little lower than other two methods. 2) The daily activities were placed into five categories based on the intensity; sleeping, resting (lying, sitting or standing), light activity, medium activity, above medium activity. The energy expenditure value of each category was compared among the three methods. The calorie counter methods estimated the energy expenditure higher for sleeping, and lower for medium and above medium activity compared to other two methods. These results suggest that the calorie counter method is useful for the estimation of daily energy expenditure for active young women as both the time-study and 24 h heart rate methods, and the validity are comparatively high.

In the present study, we investigated the reliability of the calorie counter (Kenz Calorie Counter Select) by comparing the value for actual energy expenditure, as measured by oxygen uptake, with that given by the calorie counter for walking and running, outdoors and on a treadmill, at the same speed. Our study subjects were 22 junior college students (6 men and 16 women) who were studying health and physical education. The results are summarized as follows : 1) The amount of energy expended while walking was significantly higher on the treadmill than outdoors for both men and women. The mean differences for men ranged from 0.009 to 0.012 kcal/kg/min, while those for women ranged from 0.007 to 0.015 kcal/kg/min. Furthermore, the ratio of outdoos/treadmill given by the calorie counter's readings was significantly higher than that of actual energy expenditure measured by the oxygen uptake. 2) As for running, the calorie counter gave readings significantly higher than actual energy expenditure in only women. The, mean differences between treadmill and ourdoor exercise were 0.011 kcal/kg/min and 0.020 kcal/kg/min, respectively. Moreover, there was no significant difference between treadmill and outdoor exercise for either men or women. Thus, we suggest that the calorie counter's readings were relatively higher than actual energy expenditure, as measured by the oxygen uptake, when comparatively active young women walked. We also feel that there is room to reexamine the coefficient, in the calorie counter, for energy consumption corresponding to the intensity for each exercise. Hereafter, we think it is necessary to examine the reliability of the calorie counter when studying sedentary men and women.

We carried out weight control class from October 1993 to March 1994, to give a method of reasonable weight control and think it among women college students. The results are as follows; 1) At first 37 students attended, but 25 students were measured for the fundamental items. Only 2 students were continued to record weight, steps and foods for about six months. 2) The mean value of height, weight, Body Mass Index (BMI) were 158.8±4.0cm, 56.5±5.1kg, 23. 4±1.6 respectively. Forarm cirumference (left), upperarm circumference (left and right), upperarm circumference, fixed (right), the supersonic waves method (umbilical region) and back extension of the physical education students were significantly higher than the nutrition students. 3) Blood examination and routine urinalysis were within normal limit. 4) Among 25 students, 10 students had experience in diet. Indefinite complaints were 17 items in 27. The order of the dissatisfaction of figure of the students were the legs, the whole body, the weight, the waist, the hips, the breast. 5) The averge for 5 points in egogram was 11.0, Nuturing Parent (NP) was 13.4 the highest, Adult (A) and Critical Parent (CP) were 9.5 and 9.9 respectively. 6) The participation term at the weight control class, were 24 weeks (Case 1) and 18 weeks (Case 2). Weight of 1.2kg incresed in Case 1, and in Case 2 the weight did not change with some fluctuations during the term.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the slimming inclination of the present youth, and to obtain the basic data on the future health guidance. The subject of my research consists of 227 female junior college students of which the 119 were the nutrition speciality's students (NS) and 108, the physical education speciality's students (PES). The results were summarized as follows: 1) For the three weights, the actual weight, standard weight and ideal weight, NS showed less numerical value than PES. On the average for both groups together, standard weight was 2.8Kg lower than the actual, and the ideal weight, 5.6Kg lower than the actual. 2) To show the physical appearance using Body Mass Index (BMI), the averages of actual BMI, standard BMI and ideal BMI were 21.3, 20.2, 19.1 respectively for all the subject, giving the value difference between the actual and the ideal of 2.2. 3) Number one reason for the desire to reach the "Ideal Weight" was for the looks with NS, forming 60.5% of them. For PES, it was the easiness for movement forming 50.0%. Both groups combined, 51.4% of all the students answered "for the looks", whereas 38.3% answered "for the easiness for movement", showing the difference of 13.1%. 4) 20 to 30% of all the students were making efforts to approach the ideal weight. The data indicates that the higher the BMI is, the higher the tendency is. 5) As for the will to approach the ideal weight, most students answered "would like to make efforts as much as possible". Furthermore, over the 60% of NS with BMI higher than 22 emphasized on "making desperate efforts". These findings suggest that students with intention to reduce their weight should be given a proper and healthful guidance.
