Abstract

Thermal energy deuterium beam scattering (TEDS) from Rh(110) surface is reported and compared to helium atom scattering (HAS). Unlike for He, we find quite strong D2 off-specular diffraction. The D2 diffraction intensities are fairly isotropic along the [001] and [110], reflecting the presence of a finite dissociation barrier in the potential energy surface (PES) rather than the anisotropic corrugation of the relevant Rh(110) surface electron density. Inelastic D2 scattering with strong J=0→2 kinetic-to-rotational energy conversion is also presented and discussed. © 1996 American Institute of Physics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new model potential for van der Waals atomic pairs is proposed and shown to be in excellent agreement with ab initio calculations and experimental potentials. Abstract

The collision statistics of the energy dissipation of Auger and photoelectrons emitted from an amorphized Si(100) surface is studied by measuring the Si 2p photoelectron line as well as the first plasmon loss peak in coincidence with the Si-LVV Auger transition and the associated first plasmon loss. The Si 2p plasmon intensity decreases when measured in coincidence with the Si-LVV peak. If measured in coincidence with the Si-LVV plasmon the decrease is significantly smaller. The results agree quantitatively with calculations accounting for surface, volume, and intrinsic losses as well as elastic scattering in a random medium. In this way one can determine the average emission depth of individual electrons by means of Auger photoelectron coincidence spectroscopy, which therefore constitutes a unique tool to investigate interfaces at the nanoscale level.

Abstract

Coincidence measurements have been extensively performed in atomic and molecular physics since early 1970s. To apply this methodology to solids and surfaces has been a major target since early days, but the long average time needed to complete a coincidence experiment has hampered its attainment. In particular the coincidence technique has not been yet applied in an angle resolved way such for studying the momentum correlation in the ejection of electron pairs from solid surfaces. The experimental chamber at the ALOISA beamline at Elettra. by means of a set of seven homemade electron analyzers, is the first apparatus able to perform Angle Resolved - Auger Photoelectron Coincidence Spectroscopy (AR-APECS) from solid surfaces. In the typical setup ten different pairs of coincident electrons can be measured simultaneously, so reducing the acquisition time by one order of magnitude. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract

The feasibility of angle resolved APECS (Auger Photo-Electron Coincidence Spectroscopy) on solids is demonstrated with an experiment performed at the ALOISA (ELETTRA, Trieste) beamline on the L3M45M45 Auger transition of the Cu(111) surface. This beamline, with its multicoincidence detection system based on several individual electron analysers, was designed in order to perform such experiment with good efficiency. The correlation effects displayed by the measured angular distribution are not explained by the two step model, that conversely is commonly accepted for non coincidence experiments performed at the same energy and on the same orbital.

Abstract

The M3M4,5M4,5 Auger transition from a Cu(111) surface is studied using Angular Resolved Auger-PhotoElectron Coincidence Spectroscopy (AR-APECS). In the experiment two different geometrical configurations of the electron analyzers allow us to sample different emission angles of the ejected electrons leading to different weights of the singlet and triplet contributions in the studied transition. The experimental spectra are modeled within a two-step approach using the Cini theory for the closed band case so as to properly consider the spin-orbit interaction and the hole-hole correlation energy. Ingredients for the theory, like density of states, are obtained fully ab-initio in the framework of density functional theory by performing all-electron calculations. The obtained results confirm the recently discovered selectivity of AR-APECS in the final spin-state.

Abstract

Fermilab experiment E-760 studies the resonant formation of Charmonium states in proton-antiproton interactions using a hydrogen gas-jet target in the antiproton Accumulator ring at Fermilab. Precision measurements of the mass and width of the Charmonium states, {chi}{sub 1}, {chi}{sub 2} and a new measurement of the {psi} mass are presented.

Abstract

The value of the proton form factor in the time‐like region has been determined at Q2=12.4(GeV/c)2. We have selected events pp→e+e− from the data collected in an experiment performed at the Antiproton Accumulator Ring at Fermilab and, assuming the validity of the ‖GE‖≊0 hypotesis, we have found ‖GM‖=.034±.017 and σTOT(pp→e+e−)=10±5pb.
