11. Subjective assessment of chewing function of obturator prosthesis wearers.

Abstract

PURPOSE: Assessments of masticatory performance and occlusal force for wearers of obturator prostheses were performed as clinical objective assessments and reported in an earlier study. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate clinically the chewing function of obturator prosthesis wearers by self-evaluations and to examine their relationship to the objective assessments. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty patients with maxillofacial obturator prostheses who were having a periodic checkup at the maxillofacial rehabilitation clinic in Kyushu University Hospital were recruited for this study. Chewing function was evaluated by 3 assessment tools: a self-assessment mastication scale, a chewing function score, and a mastication score. In addition, correlations among these assessments and objective tests--ie, masticatory performance and maximum occlusal force--were analyzed by the Spearman rank correlation coefficient. RESULTS: The mean self-assessment mastication scale was 63.2 (SD 31.8), the chewing function score was 54.0 (SD 30.2), and the mastication score was 51.4 (SD 33.3). There was no statistically significant relationship between the self-assessment mastication scale and each objective test. However, there were significant correlations between each semisubjective score--the chewing function score and the mastication score--and masticatory performance. There was no relationship between each semisubjective score and maximum occlusal force. CONCLUSION: A self-assessment mastication scale was not always in agreement with objective assessments, and assessments made by patients should be taken into consideration when arranging maxillofacial rehabilitation. Conversely, both chewing function and mastication scores corresponded with masticatory performance, and these would be useful as screening tests before performing objective tests. Abstract

PURPOSE: Eating, which includes chewing and swallowing, is an oral function that influences quality of life. Though the swallowing ability of maxillectomy patients was reported in our previous study, the chewing function has not been fully reported to date. Thus, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the chewing function of obturator prosthesis wearers by measurement of masticatory performance and occlusal force. The relationship of these 2 measurements was also investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty maxillofacial obturator prosthesis wearers undergoing periodic checkup at the maxillofacial rehabilitation clinic in Kyushu University Hospital were recruited for this study. Additionally, 20 young, healthy individuals were recruited as controls. Data on masticatory performance, which was measured by a sieve method using hydrocolloid material, and maximum occlusal force, which was measured by the Dental Prescale System (Fuji Film), were obtained for each participant. RESULTS: The mean of masticatory performance was 2.6 (SD 1.2) on a 1.40-mm mesh. There was no significant difference in masticatory performance between the patient group and the controls. The mean maximum occlusal force of the patient group was 625.9 N (SD 299.1 N), which was significantly lower than that of the control group. There was no significant correlation between masticatory performance and maximum occlusal force for the patient group in this study (P = .3726). CONCLUSION: Masticatory performance of obturator prosthesis wearers with dentate or partially edentulous maxillae was not different from that of young, healthy individuals, though maximum occlusal force of these patients was lower than that of controls. 14. Increases in plasma concentration of progesterone by protease-sensitive urinary pheromones in female rats

Abstract

author, Plasma progesterone concentrations in female Wistar rats after exposure to urine preparations with and without protease-treatment were measured to explore the effects of protease-sensitive pheromones on the endocrine state. Exposure to crude urine excreted from male rats induced an increase in the plasma progesterone concentration in female rats. The progesterone concentration of oestrous females increased with an increase in the protein concentration in urine samples. Exposure of females in the oestrous state to urine preparations treated with protease did not induce increases in plasma progesterone. These results suggest that the presence of a protease-sensitive component in male urine exerts an influence on the endocrine state of oestrous females. 37. Isolation and characterization of lung mast cells from rats with bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis.

Abstract

To study the nature and extent of mast cell heterogeneity within a single species, we have developed methodologies to isolate rat lung mast cells (LMC) and have compared these to peritoneal mast cells (PMC) and intestinal mucosal mast cells (IMMC). In normal and athymic nude (rnu/rnu) rats, a single intratracheal administration of bleomycin (5 U/kg) leads to pulmonary fibrosis accompanied by parenchymal hyperplasia of mast cells that are histochemically like PMC rather than IMMC. Using collagenase digestion of fibrotic rat lungs (30-80 days after bleomycin treatment), we recovered an average of 58.1 × 106 viable cells per rat, containing 2.5% mast cells. Control experiments in which PMC were subjected to the isolation procedure used for LMC showed that there was no qualitative effect on PMC, but that a reduction of 26-60% in responsiveness to secretagogues occurred. Isolated LMC secreted histamine in response to 48/80, A23187, substance P, VIP and somatostatin and bradykinin, but at lower levels than PMC. The anti-allergic compound theophylline, which does not inhibit antigen-induced histamine secretion by IMMC, was effective against both LMC and PMC. Taken together, the thymus independence of pulmonary mast cell hyperplasia, the histochemical characteristics and the responsiveness to secretagogues and anti-allergic compounds indicate that the majority of dispersed LMC are similar to PMC rather than to IMMC. Whether LMC should be considered analogous to PMC or, because of their size, histamine content and responsiveness to many secretagogues, intermediate between PMC and IMMC, remains to be determined through additional studies. 42. A Novel Traceless Resin-Bound Guanidinylating Reagent for Secondary Amines To Prepare N,N-Disubstituted Guanidines

Abstract

We report the development of a solid support-linked guanidinylating reagent. This reagent consists of a urethane-protected triflyl guanidine attached to the resin via a carbamate linker. It allows for rapid synthesis of guanidines from a variety of amines. It provides access to N-alkyl/aryl- or N,N-dialkylguanidines under mild conditions. Cleavage with 50% TFA produces target molecules in high yields and purity. The ability to guanidinylate secondary amines is a significant feature of this guanidinylating reagent.

44. EFFECT OF SYNTHETIC LUTEINIZING HORMONE RELEASING HORMONE ON OVULATION DURING THE OESTROUS CYCLE IN THE RAT

Abstract

The effect of synthetic luteinizing hormone releasing hormone (LH-RH) on ovulation has been studied during the oestrous cycle in adult female rats. Ovulation could be induced by the administration of 1 μg synthetic LH-RH at 1:00 a. m. on the day of dioestrus II (lights on from 10:00 p.m. to 10:00 a.m.). At 1:00 a.m. on the day of dioestrus II, the average volume of the largest follicles reached a volume of 83 × 106μm3and was three fifth of the volume of that at 6:00 a. m. on the day of pro-oestrus (critical period). These findings suggest that the luteinizing hormone (LH) content in the pituitary gland during the early period of dioestrus II is sufficient to induce ovulation and that the follicles that reach to three fifth of the volume at the critical period are capable of ovulating providing endogenous ovulatory LH released.

45. Effect of expectorants on relaxation behavior of sputum viscoelasticity in vivo

Abstract

We studied the effects of expectorants (mucolytic agents) in vivo on the relaxation behavior of sputum viscoelasticity. Seven female and thirty-three male patients (56.8 ± 19.3 yrs, range: 21 to 82 years old) with a chronic pulmonary disease except bronchial asthma were studied. They were randomly put into the control group or a group which would be given oral treatments with an expectorant for a week after a one week washout period. The groups were as follows: Group I (n=8), control; Group II (n=7), Bromhexine hydrochloride 24 mg per day; Group III (n=10), Ambroxol 90 mg per day; Group IV (n=9) α- Chymotrypsin buccle 100 ch.u. per day; Group V (n=6), Serratiopeptidase 30 mg per day. In Groups IV & V, frequency dependence of sputum viscoelasticity at the range of ω=10−3to10−0rad.sec−1were clearly changed after the treatments, and the magnitude of the relaxation and its main relaxation time were significantly increased. On the other hand, in Groups I, II & III, no significant changes of the frequency dependences were observed. These findings suggest that proteolytic enzymes administered orally work on the molecular structure of sputum, and break down their linkages between subunits of the structure.

Abstract

Fetal heart rate and beat-to-beat variability during fetal breathing movements were investigated by abdominal fetal electrocardiography. The mean (M-RR) and the standard deviation (SD-RR) of R-R intervals and the percentage of absolute beat-to-beat differences below 2 msec (2 msec %) were measured by computerized quantification. Fetal breathing movements were associated with a significant increase in SD-RR (from 8.73 ± 5.59 during apnea to 16.7 ± 5.67 during breathing) and a significant decrease in 2 msec % (from 44.1 ± 12.4 during apnea to 27.9 ± 8.65 during breathing). According to discriminant analysis, the 2 msec % was the best coefficient for classifying fetal breathing episodes. Thus the determination of 2 msec % is useful in assessing fetal heart rate variability by abdominal fetal electrocardiography.

Abstract

A rare case of Castleman's disease is presented. A 26-year-old Japanese pregnant woman was found to have an asymptomatic adnexal tumor. Ultrasonography showed a hypoechoic mass with dense central echoes. At laparotomy with presumptive diagnosis of dermoid cyst of the ovary at 15 weeks' gestation, a firm encapsulated retroperi-toneal mass was resected. Histological examinations identified it as Castleman's disease of the hyaline-vascular type with focal calcification. Castleman's disease should be included in the differential diagnosis of low abdominal masses. This is the first case of Castleman's disease associated with pregnancy in an Asian.

Abstract

This is the first report of a newborn infant with Down's syndrome associated with combined congenital pyloric and esophageal atresias without a tracheoesophageal fistula (Gross A type). A mother was noted to have marked abdominal distension and hydramios was suspected at 28 weeks gestation. Ultrasonographic findings of her abdomen demonstrated that the fetus was suspected of having congenital duodenal and esophageal atresia, from the large doubleecho-free spaces occupying the greater part of the abdomen. Chromosome analysis of the amniotic fluid showed a karyotype of 21 trisomy. The newborn baby had clinical characteristics of Down's syndrome and severe abdominal distension after birth. At 19 days after birth, autopsy revealed pyloric and esophageal atresias without trache oesophageal fistula. We conclude that ultrasonographic examination is useful for the prenatal diagnosis of a patient with gastrointestinal obstruction combined with esophageal atresias, without trache oesophageal fistula.
