The detection of entanglement provides a definitive proof of quantumness. Its ascertainment might be challenging for hot or macroscopic objects, where entanglement is typically weak, but nevertheless present. Here we propose a platform for measuring entanglement by connecting the objects of interest to an uncontrolled quantum network, whose emission (readout) is trained to learn and sense the entanglement of the former. First, we demonstrate the platform and its features with generic quantum systems. As the network effectively learns to recognise quantum states, it is possible to sense the amount of entanglement after training with only non-entangled states. Furthermore, by taking into account measurement errors, we demonstrate entanglement sensing with precision that scales beyond the standard quantum limit and outperforms measurements performed directly on the objects. Finally, we utilise our platform for sensing gravity-induced entanglement between two masses and predict an improvement of two orders of magnitude in the precision of entanglement estimation compared to existing techniques., Main text: 6 pages with 4 figures. Phase measurement constitutes a key task in many fields of science, both in the classical and quantum regime. The higher precision of such measurement offers significant advances, and can also be utilised to achieve finer estimates for quantities such as distance, the gravitational constant, electromagnetic field amplitude, etc. Here we theoretically model the use of a quantum network, composed of a randomly coupled set of two-level systems, as a processing device for phase measurement. An incoming resource state carrying the phase information interacts with the quantum network, whose emission is trained to produce a desired output signal. We demonstrate phase precision scaling following the standard quantum limit, the Heisenberg limit, and beyond. This can be achieved using quantum resource states such as NOON states or other entangled states, however, we also find that classically correlated mixtures of states are alone sufficient, provided that they exhibit quantum coherence. Our proposed setup does not require conditional measurements, and is compatible with many different types of coupling between the quantum network and the phase encoding state, hence making it attractive to a wide range of possible physical implementations. We describe a complete method for a precise study of gravitational interaction between two nearby quantum masses. Since the displacements of these masses are much smaller than the initial separation between their centers, the displacement-to-separation ratio is a natural parameter in which the gravitational potential can be expanded. We show that entanglement in such experiments is sensitive to initial relative momentum only when the system evolves into non-Gaussian states, i.e., when the potential is expanded at least up to the cubic term. A pivotal role of force gradient as the dominant contributor to position-momentum correlations is demonstrated. We establish a closed-form expression for the entanglement gain, which shows that the contribution from the cubic term is proportional to momentum and from the quartic term is proportional to momentum squared. From a quantum information perspective, the results find applications as a momentum witness of non-Gaussian entanglement. We consider the simplest case of Rutherford scattering, i.e. the head-on collision, where the projectile is treated quantum mechanically. The convexity of repulsive Coulomb force invokes a disagreement between the Ehrenfest's and Hamilton's dynamics. Many animals display sensitivity to external magnetic field, but it is only in the simplest organisms that the sensing mechanism is understood. Here we report on behavioural experiments where American cockroaches (Periplaneta americana) were subjected to periodically rotated external magnetic fields with a period of 10 min. The insects show increased activity when placed in a periodically rotated Earth-strength field, whereas this effect is diminished in a twelve times stronger periodically rotated field. We analyse established models of magnetoreception, the magnetite model and the radical pair model, in light of this adaptation result. A broad class of magnetite models, based on single-domain particles found in insects and assumption that better alignment of magnetic grains towards the external field yields better sensing and higher insect activity, is shown to be excluded by the measured data. The radical-pair model explains the data if we assume that contrast in the chemical yield on the order of one in a thousand is perceivable by the animal, and that there also exists a threshold value for detection, attained in an Earth-strength field but not in the stronger field. The double-slit experiment is the most direct demonstration of interference between individual quantum objects. Since similar experiments with single particles and more slits produce interference fringes reducible to a combination of double-slit patterns it is usually argued that quantum interference occurs between pairs of trajectories, compactly denoted as second-order interference. Here we show that quantum mechanics in fact allows for interference of arbitrarily high order. This occurs naturally when one considers multiple quantum objects interacting in the presence of a nonlinearity, both of which are required to observe higher-order interference. We make this clear by treating a generalised multi-slit interferometer using second-quantisation. We then present explicit experimentally-relevant examples both with photons interacting in nonlinear media and an interfering Bose-Einstein condensate with particle-particle interactions. These examples are all perfectly described by quantum theory, and yet exhibit higher-order interference based on multiple particles interacting nonlinearly., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

Quantum backflow is usually understood as a quantum interference phenomenon where probability current of a quantum particle points in the opposite direction to particle's momentum. Here, we quantify the amount of quantum backflow for arbitrary momentum distributions, paving the way towards its experimental verification. We give examples of backflow in gravitational and harmonic potential, and discuss experimental procedures required for the demonstration using atomic gravimeters. Such an experiment would show that the probability of finding a free falling particle above initial level could grow for suitably prepared quantum state with most momentum downwards., Comment: Accepted for publication in Quantum. Quantum information processing tasks require exotic quantum states as a prerequisite. They are usually prepared with many different methods tailored to the specific resource state. Here we provide a versatile unified state preparation scheme based on a driven quantum network composed of randomly-coupled fermionic nodes. The output of such a system is then superposed with the help of linear mixing where weights and phases are trained in order to obtain desired output quantum states. We explicitly show that our method is robust and can be utilized to create almost perfect maximally entangled, NOON, W, cluster, and discorded states. Furthermore, the treatment includes energy decay in the system as well as dephasing and depolarization. Under these noisy conditions we show that the target states are achieved with high fidelity by tuning controllable parameters and providing sufficient strength to the driving of the quantum network. Finally, in very noisy systems, where noise is comparable to the driving strength, we show how to concentrate entanglement by mixing more states in a larger network., 13 pages, 10 figures

Rutherford scattering is usually described by treating the projectile either classically or as quantum mechanical plane waves. Here we treat them as wave packets and study their head-on collisions with the stationary target nuclei. We simulate the quantum dynamics of this one-dimensional system and study deviations of the average quantum solution from the classical one. These deviations are traced back to the convexity properties of Coulomb potential. Finally, we sketch how these theoretical findings could be tested in experiments looking for the onset of nuclear reactions., 16 pages, 8 figures

Reconstructing quantum states is an important task for various emerging quantum technologies. The process of reconstructing the density matrix of a quantum state is known as quantum state tomography. Conventionally, tomography of arbitrary quantum states is challenging as the paradigm of efficient protocols has remained in applying specific techniques for different types of quantum states. Here, we introduce a quantum state tomography platform based on the framework of reservoir computing. It forms a quantum neural network and operates as a comprehensive device for reconstructing an arbitrary quantum state (finite-dimensional or continuous variable). This is achieved with only measuring the average occupation numbers in a single physical setup, without the need of any knowledge of optimum measurement basis or correlation measurements. Recent experiments have demonstrated strong coupling between living bacteria and light. Here we propose a scheme capable of revealing non-classical features of the bacteria (quantum discord of light-bacteria correlations) without exact modelling of the organisms and their interactions with external world. The scheme puts the bacteria in a role of mediators of quantum entanglement between otherwise non-interacting probing light modes. We then propose a plausible model of this experiment, using recently achieved parameters, demonstrating the feasibility of the scheme. Within this model we find that the steady state entanglement between the probes, which does not depend on the initial conditions, is accompanied by entanglement between the probes and bacteria, and provides independent evidence of the strong coupling between them., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

We propose an information-theoretic quantifier for the advantage gained from cooperation that captures the degree of dependency between subsystems of a global system. The quantifier is distinct from measures of multipartite correlations despite sharing many properties with them. It is directly computable for classical as well as quantum systems and reduces to comparing the respective conditional mutual information between any two subsystems. Exemplarily we show the benefits of using the new quantifier for symmetric quantum secret sharing. We also prove an inequality characterizing the lack of monotonicity of conditional mutual information under local operations and provide intuitive understanding for it. We develop a scheme of quantum reservoir state preparation, based on a quantum neural network framework, which takes classical optical excitation as input and provides desired quantum states as output. We theoretically demonstrate the broad potential of our scheme by explicitly preparing a range of intriguing quantum states, including single-photon states, Schrödinger's cat states, and two-mode entangled states. This scheme can be used as a compact quantum state preparation device for emerging quantum technologies. Published version

When two quantum systems are coupled via a mediator, their dynamics has traces of nonclassical properties of the mediator. We show how this observation can be effectively utilized to study the quantum nature of materials without well-established structure. A concrete example considered is ${\mathrm{Sr}}_{14}{\mathrm{Cu}}_{24}{\mathrm{O}}_{41}$. Measurements of low-temperature magnetic and thermal properties of this compound were explained with long-range coupling of unpaired spins through dimerized spin chains. We first show that the required coupling is not provided by the spin chain alone and give alternative compact two-dimensional spin arrangements compatible with the experimental results. Then we argue that any mediator between the unpaired spins must share with them quantum correlations in the form of quantum discord and, in many cases, quantum entanglement. In conclusion, present data witness quantum mediators between unpaired spins in ${\mathrm{Sr}}_{14}{\mathrm{Cu}}_{24}{\mathrm{O}}_{41}$.

Canonical quantum formalism predicts that the interference pattern registered in multi-slit experiments should be a simple combination of patterns observed in two-slit experiments. This has been linked to the validity of Born's rule and verified in precise experiments with photons as well as molecules via nuclear magnetic resonance. Due to the expected universal validity of Born rule, it is instructive to conduct similar tests with yet other physical systems. Here we discuss analogs of triple-slit experiment using atoms allowing tripod energy level configuration, as realisable e.g. with alkaline-earth-like atoms. We cover all the stages of the setup including various ways of implementing analogs of slit blockers. The Schr\"odinger-Newton equation is a proposed model to explain the localization of macroscopic particles by suppressing quantum dispersion with the particle's own gravitational attraction. On cosmic scales, however, dark energy also acts repulsively, as witnessed by the accelerating rate of universal expansion. Here, we introduce the effects of dark energy in the form of a cosmological constant $\Lambda$, that drives the late-time acceleration of the Universe, into the Schr\"odinger-Newton approach. We then ask in which regime dark energy dominates both canonical quantum diffusion and gravitational self-attraction. It turns out that this happens for sufficiently delocalized objects with an arbitrary mass and that there exists a minimal delocalization width of about $67$ m. While extremely macroscopic from a quantum perspective, the value is in principle accessible to laboratories on Earth. Hence, we analyze, numerically, how the dynamics of an initially spherical Gaussian wave packet is modified in the presence of $\Lambda > 0$. A notable feature is the gravitational collapse of part of the wave packet, in the core region close to the center of mass, accompanied by the accelerated expansion of the more distant shell surrounding it. The order of magnitude of the distance separating collapse from expansion matches analytical estimates of the classical turnaround radius for a spherically symmetric body in the presence of dark energy. However, the time required to observe these modifications is astronomical. No experiment to date has provided evidence for quantum features of the gravitational interaction. Recently proposed tests suggest looking for the generation of quantum entanglement between massive objects as a possible route towards the observation of such features. Motivated by advances in optical cooling of mirrors, here we provide a systematic study of entanglement between two masses that are coupled gravitationally. We first consider the masses trapped at all times in harmonic potentials (optomechanics) and then the masses released from the traps. This leads to the estimate of the experimental parameters required for the observation of gravitationally induced entanglement. The optomechanical setup demands LIGO-like mirrors and squeezing or long coherence times, but the released masses can be light and accumulate detectable entanglement in a timescale shorter than their coherence times. No macroscopic quantum superposition develops during the evolution. We discuss the implications from such thought experiments regarding the nature of the gravitational coupling., 10 pages, 6 figures

The concurrent rise of artificial intelligence and quantum information poses opportunity for creating interdisciplinary technologies like quantum neural networks. Quantum reservoir processing, introduced here, is a platform for quantum information processing developed on the principle of reservoir computing that is a form of artificial neural network. A quantum reservoir processor can perform qualitative tasks like recognizing quantum states that are entangled as well as quantitative tasks like estimating a non-linear function of an input quantum state (e.g. entropy, purity or logarithmic negativity). It has been demonstrated both theoretically and experimentally that genuine multipartite entanglement between qubits can exist even in the absence of multipartite correlations. Here we provide first examples of this effect in higher dimensional systems -- qudits. We construct states in which genuine $N$-partite entanglement between qudits is supported only by correlations involving strictly less than $N$ particles. The construction differs in several aspects from the ones for qubits. The states introduced here are a natural test-bed for candidate quantifiers of genuinely multipartite quantum correlations., 6 pages, 1 figure

Phenomenological approaches to quantum gravity implement a minimum resolvable length-scale but do not link it to an underlying formalism describing geometric superpositions. Here, we introduce an intuitive approach in which points in the classical spatial background are delocalised, or `smeared', giving rise to an entangled superposition of geometries. The model uses additional degrees of freedom to parameterise the superposed classical backgrounds. Our formalism contains both minimum length and minimum momentum resolutions and we naturally identify the former with the Planck length. In addition, we argue that the minimum momentum is determined by the de Sitter scale, and may be identified with the effects of dark energy in the form of a cosmological constant. Within the new formalism, we obtain both the generalised uncertainty principle (GUP) and extended uncertainty principle (EUP), which may be combined to give an uncertainty relation that is symmetric in position and momentum. Crucially, our approach does not imply a significant modification of the position-momentum commutator, which remains proportional to the identity matrix. It therefore yields generalised uncertainty relations without violating the equivalence principle, in contradistinction to existing models based on nonlinear dispersion relations. Implications for cosmology and the black hole uncertainty principle correspondence are briefly discussed, and prospects for future work on the smeared-space model are outlined., 27 pages, 1 figure, 1 appendix. Characterizing tradeoffs between simultaneous violations of multiple Bell inequalities in a large network has important physical consequences but is computationally demanding. We propose a graph-theoretic approach to efficiently produce Bell monogamy relations in arbitrary arrangements of qubits. All the relations obtained for bipartite Bell inequalities are tight and leverage only a single Bell monogamy relation. This feature is unique to bipartite Bell inequalities, as we show that there is no finite set of such elementary monogamy relations for multipartite inequalities. Nevertheless, many tight monogamy relations for multipartite inequalities can be obtained with our method as shown in explicit examples. MOE (Min. of Education, S’pore) Published version

Non-commutativity is one of the most elementary non-classical features of quantum observables. Here we propose a method to detect non-commutativity of interaction Hamiltonians of two probe objects coupled via a mediator. If these objects are open to their local environments, our method reveals non-decomposability of temporal evolution into a sequence of interactions between each probe and the mediator. The Hamiltonians or Lindblad operators can remain unknown throughout the assessment, we only require knowledge of the dimension of the mediator. Furthermore, no operations on the mediator are necessary. Technically, under the assumption of decomposable evolution, we derive upper bounds on correlations between the probes and then demonstrate that these bounds can be violated with correlation dynamics generated by non-commuting Hamiltonians, e.g., Jaynes-Cummings coupling. An intuitive explanation is provided in terms of multiple exchanges of a virtual particle which lead to the excessive accumulation of correlations. A plethora of correlation quantifiers are helpful in our method, e.g., quantum entanglement, discord, mutual information, and even classical correlation. Quantum coherence can be used to infer the presence of a detector without triggering it. Here we point out that, according to quantum mechanics, such interaction-free measurements cannot be perfect, i.e., in a single-shot experiment one has strictly positive probability to activate the detector. We formalize the extent to which such measurements are forbidden by deriving a trade-off relation between the probability of activation and the probability of an inconclusive interaction-free measurement. Our description of interaction-free measurements is theory independent and allows derivations of similar relations in models generalizing quantum mechanics. We provide the trade-off for the density cube formalism, which extends the quantum model by permitting coherence between more than two paths. The trade-off obtained hints at the possibility of perfect interaction-free measurements and indeed we construct their explicit examples. Such measurements open up a paradoxical possibility where we can learn by means of interference about the presence of an object in a given location without ever detecting a probing particle in that location. We therefore propose that absence of perfect interaction-free measurement is a natural postulate expected to hold in all physical theories. We present a quantitative method, utilising a highly sensitive quantum sensor, that extends applicability of magnetorelaxometry to biological samples at physiological temperature. The observed magnetic fields allow for non-invasive determination of physical properties of magnetic materials and their surrounding environment inside the specimen. The method is applied to American cockroaches and reveals magnetic deposits with strikingly different behaviour in alive and dead insects. We discuss consequences of this finding to cockroach magneto-reception. To our knowledge, this work represents the first characterisation of the magnetisation dynamics in live insects and helps to connect results from behavioural experiments on insects in magnetic fields with characterisation of magnetic materials in their corpses., 10 pages, 5 figures, published version

In particular, by choosing negativity to quantify entanglement, we show that entanglement of any pure nonmaximally entangled state can be improved in this way (but not of any mixed state) and we provide detailed analysis for two qubits. It is then shown that Markovian open system dynamics can only approximate such measurements, but this approximation converges exponentially fast as illustrated using the Araki-Żurek model. Some physical objects are hardly accessible to direct experimentation. It is then desirable to infer their properties based solely on the interactions they have with systems over which we have control. In this spirit, here we introduce schemes for assessing the non-classicality of the inaccessible objects as characterised by quantum discord. We consider two probes individually interacting with the inaccessible object, but not with each other. The schemes are based on monitoring entanglement dynamics between the probes. Our method is robust and experimentally friendly as it allows the probes and the object to be open systems, makes no assumptions about the initial state, dimensionality of involved Hilbert spaces and details of the probe-object Hamiltonian. We apply our scheme to a membrane-in-the-middle optomechanical system, to detect system-environment correlations in open system dynamics as well as non-classicality of the environment, and we foresee potential benefits for the inference of the non-classical nature of gravity., New results: main theorem explicitly covers open system dynamics + optomechanics example

A genuinely $N$-partite entangled state may display vanishing $N$-partite correlations measured for arbitrary local observables. In such states the genuine entanglement is noticeable solely in correlations between subsets of particles. A straightforward way to obtain such states for odd $N$ is to design an `anti-state' in which all correlations between an odd number of observers are exactly opposite. Evenly mixing a state with its anti-state then produces a mixed state with no $N$-partite correlations, with many of them genuinely multiparty entangled. Intriguingly, all known examples of `entanglement without correlations' involve an \emph{odd} number of particles. Here we further develop the idea of anti-states, thereby shedding light on the different properties of even and odd particle systems. We conjecture that there is no anti-state to any pure even-$N$-party entangled state making the simple construction scheme unfeasable. However, as we prove by construction, higher-rank examples of `entanglement without correlations' for arbitrary even $N$ indeed exist. These classes of states exhibit genuine entanglement and even violate an $N$-partite Bell inequality, clearly demonstrating the non-classical features of these states as well as showing their applicability for quantum communication complexity tasks., Comment: 8 pages

We propose a linear optical scheme that can conditionally generate high NOON states using polarization modes. This scheme provides advantages over the previous proposals on path-entangled NOON states in view of success probability or required resources of optical elements. We recently showed that multipartite correlations between outcomes of random observables detect quantum entanglement in all pure and some mixed states. In this followup article we further develop this approach, derive a maximal amount of such correlations, and show that they are not monotonous under local operations and classical communication. Nevertheless, we demonstrate their usefulness in entanglement detection with a single random observable per party. Finally we study convex-roof extension of the correlations and provide a closed-form necessary and sufficient condition for entanglement in rank-2 mixed states and a witness in general., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures

Two observables are called complementary if preparing a physical object in an eigenstate of one of them yields a completely random result in a measurement of the other. We investigate small sets of complementary observables that cannot be extended by yet another complementary observable. We construct explicit examples of unextendible sets up to dimension 16 and conjecture certain small sets to be unextendible in higher dimensions. Our constructions provide three complementary measurements, only one observable away from the ultimate minimum of two. Almost all our examples in finite dimensions are useful for discriminating pure states from some mixed states, and they help to shed light on the complex topology of the Bloch space of higher-dimensional quantum systems. Most working scientists hold fast to the concept of 'realism' - a viewpoint according to which an external reality exists independent of observation. But quantum physics has shattered some of our cornerstone beliefs. According to Bell's theorem, any theory that is based on the joint assumption of realism and locality (meaning that local events cannot be affected by actions in space-like separated regions) is at variance with certain quantum predictions. Experiments with entangled pairs of particles have amply confirmed these quantum predictions, thus rendering local realistic theories untenable. Maintaining realism as a fundamental concept would therefore necessitate the introduction of 'spooky' actions that defy locality. Here we show by both theory and experiment that a broad and rather reasonable class of such non-local realistic theories is incompatible with experimentally observable quantum correlations. In the experiment, we measure previously untested correlations between two entangled photons, and show that these correlations violate an inequality proposed by Leggett for non-local realistic theories. We introduce new communication complexity problems whose quantum solution exploits entanglement between higher-dimensional systems. We show that the quantum solution is more efficient than the broad class of classical ones. The difference between the efficiencies for the quantum and classical protocols grows with the dimensionality of the entangled systems.

We show that the expectation value of squared correlations measured along random local directions is an identifier of quantum entanglement in pure states, which can be directly experimentally assessed if two copies of the state are available. Entanglement can therefore be detected by parties who do not share a common reference frame and whose local reference frames, such as polarizers or Stern-Gerlach magnets, remain unknown. Furthermore, we also show that in every experimental run, access to only one qubit from the macroscopic reference is sufficient to identify entanglement, violate a Bell inequality, and, in fact, observe all phenomena observable with macroscopic references. Finally, we provide a state-independent entanglement witness solely in terms of random correlations and emphasize how data gathered for a single random measurement setting per party reliably detects entanglement. The results of space-like separated measurements are independent of distant measurement settings, a property one might call two-way no-signalling. In contrast, time-like separated measurements are only one-way no-signalling since the past is independent of the future but not vice-versa. For this reason temporal correlations that are formally identical to non-classical spatial correlations can still be modelled classically. We define non-classical temporal correlations as the ones which cannot be simulated by propagating in time a classical information content of a quantum system. We first show that temporal correlations between results of any projective quantum measurements on a qubit can be simulated classically. Then we present a sequence of POVM measurements on a single $m$-level quantum system that cannot be explained by propagating in time $m$-level classical system and using classical computers with unlimited memory., 6 pages, 1 figure
