Purpose: The coronavirus pandemic has suddenly changed the lives of people all over the world, both in terms of their health, everyday habits, work, and the patterns of their consumer behavior. The goal of our study was first to examine the intensity of stockpiling in Poland that appeared in response to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and explore the role of psychological factors (sense of control over the pandemic and subjective perception of the risk of getting infected with the coronavirus) for different dimensions of stockpiling. Design/methodology/approach: The study was conducted in April 2020 on a nationwide representative random-quota sample (n=1,046) shortly after the first COVID-19 infection was diagnosed in Poland. At the time, certain changes in shopping behavior, especially increased purchase frequencies and stockpiling intensity, were observed in Poland, similarly to many other countries. Findings: The results showed that the factors affecting consumer behavior, such as making supplies or spending more on pandemic-related and unrelated items, are explained not only by demographic variables but also by psychological factors such as the experience of a lack of control and fear of being infected with the coronavirus. Research limitations/implications: The study has managerial implications regarding sales and logistics management. In an emergency situation (not only directly related to the economic crisis and consumption), both producers of basic products and retailers should be prepared for increased interest in the purchase of these products and provide access to consumers accordingly. Controlling communications in public spaces that could generate anxiety would be advisable too. Originality/value: The conducted study shows that the shopping behavior during the onset of the COVID‑19 pandemic was predicted by fear of the coronavirus and feelings of a lack of control.

Background Previous studies on animal models have suggested that δ-opioid receptor (OR) signaling is the primary pathway responsible for opioids' cardioprotective effect. We hypothesize that the μ-OR's activation protects the human heart muscle. Methods We performed the experiments on muscular trabeculae obtained from the right atrial appendages of 104 consecutive patients subjected to coronary artery bypass surgery. Two trabeculae from each patient were studied simultaneously and exposed to 60 min of hypoxia with subsequent 60 min of reoxygenation. Remifentanil (5 μM or 50 μM) or sufentanil (40 μM or 400 μM) was used from the time of reoxygenation. Trabeculae contractility was assessed as the maximal amplitude of the contraction at baseline, after 60 min of hypoxia, during reoxygenation, and after norepinephrine application. Results During reperfusion, the application of remifentanil improved cardiomyocytes' function as compared to the control group (time from reperfusion: 15 min: 39.8% vs. 21.7%, p = 0.01; 30 min: 41.4% vs. 21.8%, p = 0.01; 60 min: 42.7% vs. 26.9%, p = 0.04; after norepinephrine: 64.7% vs. 43.2%, p = 0.03). The application of sufentanil did not influence cardiomyocyte function as can be seen when comparing the results of the experimental and control group. Conclusions Remifentanil, but not sufentanil, induces a cardioprotective effect on human right atria muscle in in vitro conditions, manifested as the increased amplitude of their contraction during reperfusion after 60 min of ischemia.

We examine when and under which conditions place attachment is related to attitudes towards migrants and refugees, and whether this effect is mediated by the feeling that the presence of many newcomers threatens the character of the place (i.e. cultural continuity). We conducted three representative studies in Poland (Ntotal = 3138) to check whether two types of place attachment - traditional and active - would be differently associated with attitudes towards refugees and willingness to help them. The results showed that individuals who expressed higher traditional place attachment were more opposed towards migrants and war refugees. The relation between traditional attachment and attitudes towards refugees was mediated by a higher feeling of threat that a place would lose its cultural continuity. In contrast, actively attached residents displayed a lower level of a perceived threat to a place’s cultural continuity and were willing to accept newcomers. Our results explain the inconsistency of previous research on the relationship between place attachment and attitudes towards newcomers by indicating what type of place attachment is specifically related to negative outgroup attitudes and providing insight into a mechanism that explains this effect.

Virtual migration is increasingly recognized as a new research direction for mobility studies, supplementing embodied and spatial mobility. metaverse technology could accelerate such migrations in the future, as it intends to offer a viable alternative to the real world regarding work and entertainment opportunities. Drawing from research on the relationship between personality and real-world migration intentions, we aimed to compare whether the Big Five personality traits similarly (or differently) predict willingness to move to the metaverse and to geographical places. We conducted two representative studies (Ntotal =2306) in Poland. We found that extraversion positively and agreeableness and conscientiousness negatively predict virtual and real-world migration willingness. Furthermore, openness is positively associated with real-world migration intentions and negatively associated with willingness to migrate to the metaverse. In turn, the effect of neuroticism on virtual migration intentions was positive but less stable across the studies.

The most ambitious visions of metaverse technology promise to create virtual places that offer the same possibilities as the real world. Implementation of these plans can become the next milestone on the road to the ongoing exodus from real places to digital ones. However, as any novel technology, the metaverse raises controversies and questions. Does one want to migrate to the metaverse? Does one’s willingness to move to virtual worlds depend on the bonds with existing virtual places and the sense of threat related to this technology? To address these questions, we drew on the theories of place attachment and intergroup threat. In two studies – (1) among users of open-world games (N = 366) and (2) using a sample representative of the Polish population in terms of age, gender and size of the residential place (N = 995) – we observed a low level of willingness to migrate to the metaverse. The participants displayed a high level of perceived metaverse-related threat, ranging from privacy concerns to the belief that metaverse can deprive one of access to essential human experiences. However, greater attachment to virtual, as opposed to real, places was associated with both an increased willingness to migrate to the metaverse and a low level of perceived threat. The results provide a better understanding of individuals’ perception of the metaverse and of how the bonds with virtual and real places translate into attitudes towards metaverse technology.

The consequences of myocardial infarction (MI) are an increasing problem worldwide. Despite spectacular progress in the invasive treatment of ischemic heart disease, the ability to limit the ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury remains largely unrealized. Recent studies have shown that stimulation of opioid receptors may confer a cardioprotective effect against I/R injury. Levosimendan, the inodilator, is indicated for the short-term treatment of acutely decompensated heart failure. We tested the hypothesis that levosimendan may provide cardioprotection in the opioid-like mechanism in the human myocardium.

Biased memory of the past is often a starting point for intergroup conflicts. In three correlational studies, we examined the relationship between need for closure (NFC) and historical ethnocentric bias, a tendency to overestimate the role of one’s ethnic group in the multicultural history of the city of residence. In addition, we checked whether this relationship would be mediated by an individual preference for essentialist places. We found that higher NFC was related to increased historical ethnocentric bias. Moreover, this relation was mediated by preference for an essentialist type of a place. Our results may contribute to understanding the role of individual differences and preferred type of place in shaping a biased representation of the past. Furthermore, our research findings point to the importance of raising awareness of the multicultural past among high NFC individuals.

In order to remain alive and relevant, cultural heritage sites have to react and adapt to changing context in a coherent manner, i.e., in a way that is in line with the memory and identity of the place. The incoherent changes, i.e., the transformations that according to the local community do not agree with a character of a place, can be destructive for the long-term vitality of urban cultural heritage. In this study, we test which factors influence social acceptance of different alternations within the context of urban historical gardens that might, in turn, ensure the resilience of the place. Our study focuses on the intangible qualities of the place measured by intrinsic value, perceived essentialism and anti-essentialism as important predictors shaping the response to change. The correlational study was conducted using an online questionnaire designed to empirically grasp intangible qualities of cultural heritage sites. Five hundred twenty-nine responses were included in the analysis. The study shows that perceived historic value, inherent value (uniqueness and importance of the place) and (anti-)essentialist character of a place capture the differences between parks well and enables the finding of interventions that are coherent with a site’s genius loci. Measuring intangible qualities of urban gardens can help to design changes that find higher approval among local community members and users of the site. We discuss how the analysis of an intrinsic value and essentialism allows for planning better spatial interventions that align with the human-centered approach to urban development.

Recent studies on smart cities have emphasised that smart solution initiatives should take into account citizens' different needs and concerns. The main aim of this paper is to examine the role of different types of place attachment - emotional bonds that residents have with their city - in predicting the acceptance of future smart city technologies. In our study conducted among residents of multiple cities in Poland (N = 627), we found that while active place attachment (i.e. conscious identification with a place) predicted more favourable attitudes towards enabling technologies, traditional (natural and unintentional) place attachment was positively associated with acceptance of surveillance technologies regarding everyday monitoring and anti-Covid-19 measures. We also found that the relationship between place attachment and acceptance of future technologies is partially mediated by the use of existing smart city technologies. The implications for city governments and planners are discussed. © 2021 IEEE Computer Society. All rights reserved.

In times of crisis, people are more prone to endorse conspiracy theories. Conspiracy thinking provides answers about the causes of an event, but it can also have harmful social consequences. Our research tested both the predictor and the consequences of two types of conspiracy beliefs related to the Covid-19 pandemic: (1) general conspiracy beliefs and (2) government-related conspiracy theories. In two studies in Poland (Ntotal = 2726), we found that a perceived lack of individual control predicted both types of conspiracy theories, while a sense of collective control was positively related to general conspiracy beliefs but negatively associated with government-related conspiracy theories. Moreover, general conspiracy theories were related to the acceptance of xenophobic policies and to a less favourable attitude towards outgroups whereas government-related conspiracy theories were not. Additionally, people who believed in conspiratorial governments less frequently indicated that they used prevention methods, such as social distancing and handwashing. Our research demonstrates the importance of considering the content of various conspiracy theories when studying their social effects and potential causes. Knowing which attitudes may be associated with the endorsement of specific conspiracy theories can contribute to counteracting their negative consequences during crises.

Background. Previous studies carried out in different countries indicated that young adults experience higher levels of depressive and anxiety symptoms than older age groups during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, little is known about which epidemic-related difficulties and factors may contribute to these forms of emotional distress in various age groups. Purpose. The aim of the current study was to investigate: (i) differences in levels of depressive and generalized anxiety symptoms, as well as perceived difficulties related to pandemic across four age groups in the Polish population; (ii) which factors and difficulties related to pandemic are predictors of generalized anxiety and depressive symptoms in various age groups during the COVID-19 lockdown. Method. A total of 1115 participants (aged 18-85) took part in the study. The group was a representative sample of the Polish population in terms of sex, age, and place of residence. Participants completed online: The Patient Health Questionnaire-9, The Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7, Scale of Perceived Health and Life Risk of COVID-19, Social Support Sale, Scale of Epidemic-Related Difficulties. Results. Younger age groups (18-29 and 30-44) experienced higher levels of depressive and generalized anxiety symptoms than older adults (45-59 and 60-85 years). Difficulties in relationships and at home were amongst the strongest predictors of depressive and generalized anxiety symptoms in all age groups. Fear and uncertainty related to the spread of the virus were one of the most important predictors of emotional distress in all the groups apart from the adults between 18-29 years, whereas difficulties related to external restrictions were one of the most significant predictors of depressive and anxiety symptoms only in the youngest group. Conclusions. Our results indicate that the youngest adults and those experiencing difficulties in relationships among household members were the most vulnerable to depressive and generalized anxiety symptoms during the COVID-19 lockdown. Thus, it is important to plan preventive and therapeutic interventions to support these at-risk individuals in dealing with the challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Aim We investigated longitudinal relations between individual willingness to undergo vaccination against COVID-19 and three social factors: conspiracy mentality, prosociality, and authoritarianism. Method This longitudinal study comprised four measurement points. The first wave sample included 1130 responses and was representative of the Polish population in terms of gender, age, and place of residence. Analyses were performed using random intercept cross-lagged panel models. Results We observed bidirectional positive cross-lagged relationships between prosociality and willingness to undergo vaccination in the first three waves of measurement. Authoritarianism and conspiracy mentality translated into a lower willingness to vaccinate between the third and fourth points of measurement when the vaccination became a near-term possibility. Conclusions Eliciting prosocial motivation to vaccinate can be paramount in overcoming vaccine hesitancy. Because conspiracy thinking may be a crucial barrier to willingness to be vaccinated, it is critical to focus on planning interventions and campaigns undermining conspiracy theories about COVID-19.

It is known that solving mental tasks leads to tonic increase in cardiovascular activity. Our previous research showed that tasks involving rule application (RA) caused greater tonic increase in cardiovascular activity than tasks requiring rule discovery (RD). However, it is not clear what brain mechanisms are responsible for this difference. The aim of two experimental studies was to compare the patterns of brain and cardiovascular activity while both RD and the RA numeric tasks were being solved. The fMRI study revealed greater brain activation while solving RD tasks than while solving RA tasks. In particular, RD tasks evoked greater activation of the left inferior frontal gyrus and selected areas in the parietal, and temporal cortices, including the precuneus, supramarginal gyrus, angular gyrus, inferior parietal lobule, and the superior temporal gyrus, and the cingulate cortex. In addition, RA tasks caused larger increases in HR than RD tasks. The second study, carried out in a cardiovascular laboratory, showed greater increases in heart rate (HR), systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and mean arterial pressure (MAP) while solving RA tasks than while solving RD tasks. The results support the hypothesis that RD and RA tasks involve different modes of information processing, but the neuronal mechanism responsible for the observed greater cardiovascular response to RA tasks than to RD tasks is not completely clear.

Social campaigns are persuasive messages that attempt to communicate positive ideas and practices. One of the main challenges in designing effective social campaigns is the need to compete with other advertisements for viewers' attention. One of the most widely used methods of drawing attention to social advertising is the use of negative emotions. However, the effectiveness of negative emotional appeals in social campaigns is still a topic of debates. The aim of the study was to use both declarative and neural (EEG) measures to examine whether increasing the intensity of negative emotions in a social campaign enhances its effectiveness linearly or only to a certain level (curvilinear relation). The experimental study was conducted (N = 62) with road safety campaign, using three different levels of negative emotional intensity. The results showed that even though advertising with the strongest negative stimuli evoked the strongest negative emotions, it had no significantly stronger influence on behavioral intention (driving less risky) than moderately negative stimuli. Moreover, neural reaction to the negative stimuli in advertising depended on driving style-people with risky driving style payed less attention to more threatening message (higher beta oscillations).

New technological solutions play an important role in preventing the spread of Covid-19. Many countries have implemented tracking applications or other surveillance systems, which may raise concerns about privacy and civil rights violations but may be also perceived by citizens as a way to reduce threat and uncertainty. Our research examined whether feelings evoked by the pandemic (perceived threat and lack of control) as well as more stable ideological views predict the acceptance of such technologies. In two studies conducted in Poland, we found that perceived personal threat and lack of personal control were significantly positively related to the acceptance of surveillance technologies, but their predictive value was smaller than that of individual differences in authoritarianism and endorsement of liberty. Moreover, we found that the relationship between the acceptance of surveillance technologies and both perceived threat and lack of control was particularly strong among people high in authoritarianism. Our research shows that the negative feelings evoked by the unprecedented global crisis may inspire positive attitudes towards helpful but controversial surveillance technologies but that they do so to a lesser extent than ideological beliefs.

Rationale Conspiracy theories about COVID-19 pose a serious threat to public health by providing false information and undermining official health recommendations. However, existing studies rarely employed longitudinal designs, precluding the determination of the directionality between endorsement of conspiracy theories and its societal consequences. Also, relatively little research examined whether the association between protective health behaviour and the endorsement of conspiracy theories is affected by the content of a given theory. Methods A four-wave longitudinal panel survey on the association between belief in a wide range of conspiracy theories about COVID-19 and protective behaviour was carried out on a representative sample of Polish citizens (T1 = 1130, T2 = 971, T3 = 818, T4 = 688). Analyses were performed using Random Intercept Cross-Lagged Panel Models. Results The results showed a reciprocal, bidirectional association between conspiracy mentality and protective behaviour. The same effect was also observed between protective behaviour and threat of authoritarianism. We did not find evidence that specific COVID-19 related conspiracy theories directly (and differently) predict within-person changes in protective behaviour over time. Conclusions Our results showed that the association between various conspiracy-related variables and anti-pandemic COVID-19 variables differs at within- and between-person levels. Changes in the adherence to pro-health measures were negatively predicted by conspiracy mentality and a feeling of threat that the solutions introduced by the government may limit civil rights. Specific conspiracy beliefs were significantly related to protective behaviour only at the between-person level.

In the contemporary world of human mobility, one of the key problems is why different groups of people are welcomed in some places, but are driven away from others. Theoretical writings of geographers, sociologists, and architects suggest that place can be defined in two ways—as an essentialist, bounded entity with historical continuity or as an open, anti-essentialist space, supporting changes. We hypothesized that in the minds of lay people, these two types of places allow for either a small or high level of ethnic diversity, and thus a certain view of a place would have consequences for acceptance of outgroup members in that place. In three online experimental studies participants were asked to think of a real or imagined place focusing on its specific features, which were either essentialist or anti-essentialist. A consistent pattern of findings showed that conceiving of a place as anti-essentialist was related to greater openness towards the presence of ethnic outgroup members in that place compared to perceiving it as essentialist. Our study contributes to understanding which features of a particular place may foster its perception as more open and inclusive and, conversely, which features are related to a representation of the place as closed and unfriendly to certain ethnic groups.

What is the role of emotional attachment to a place in predicting intergroup attitudes in a conflict setting? Here, we examined whether different types of place attachment would have distinct consequences for intergroup attitudes. Research was conducted in Jerusalem, where two conflicting groups fight for the territorial occupancy of the same land. We tested our hypotheses in three studies among Israelis and Palestinians and we measured their attitudes towards each other. The results showed that in case of Israelis, a traditional (natural and unintentional) form of attachment predicted prejudice towards out-group but an active form of attachment (i.e. conscious identification with a place) was negatively related to prejudice; in case of Palestinians, there was no effect of attachment (neither traditional, nor active), but place relativity (i.e. an indifferent attitude towards place) positively predicted acceptance of the outgroup. The implications of people-place relations in the contested city are discussed.

IntroductionDuring the COVID-19 pandemic people experience higher levels of negative emotions, as well as face many negative and intense emotions felt by others. Thus, it is important to look for risk and protective factors that allow and help individuals to regulate these negative emotions and adapt to the hardships of the COVID-19 pandemic.Objectives The main aims of the study were to (i) test how empathic dimensions (perspective taking, empathic concern and personal distress) and emotion regulation abilities were related to intensity of depressive symptoms during the COVID-19 lockdown in Poland, as well as to (ii) check if emotion regulation difficulties and personal distress predicted slower decrease in depressive symptoms over the two months in which the number of COVID-19 cases declined in Poland.MethodsA total of 792 participants took part in the three-wave panel study. The sample was representative of the Polish population in terms of gender, age, and place of residence. Participants completed the following online questionnaires: The Patient Health Questionnaire-9, The Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale Short Form, and Brief version of the Empathic Sensitivity.Results Significant positive correlations were found between depressive symptoms and both personal distress and emotion regulation difficulties during the lockdown. Moreover, emotion regulation difficulties were the only significant predictor of slower decrease in depressive symptoms over time during the COVID-19 pandemic.ConclusionsIt seems that interventions focused on improvement of emotion regulation abilities could be particularly beneficial in reducing depressive symptoms during the pandemic and preventing potential negative long-term outcomes.

Despite progress in the invasive treatment of ischemic heart disease, the ability to limit ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury remains largely unrealized. Ischemic pre-conditioning (IPC) and post-conditioning (POC) induce the protective mechanisms of resistance against I/R injury. Stimulation of opioid receptors mimic the protective effect of IPC or POC in an animal models. We tested the hypothesis, that IPC and POC provide cardioprotection in opioid-dependent mechanism in human myocardium.Human atrial trabeculae were subjected to I/R injury. To achieve IPC, single hypoxia period preceded the applied lethal hypoxia, to achieve POC triple hypoxia periods followed lethal hypoxia. Naloxone was used at the onset of lethal hypoxia in IPC protocol, and at the time of re-oxygenation in POC protocol. Contractive function of the myocardium was assessed as maximal force of contraction (Amax), rate of rise of force of contraction (+dV/dT) and diastolic parameter - rate of decay of force of contraction (-dV/dT).Co-application of naloxone with IPC or POC resulted in decrease of Amax, +dV/dT and -dV/dT during re-oxygenation period as compared to IPC or POC only.Naloxone abrogates beneficial effect of IPC and POC. IPC and POC in humans provide cardioprotection in opioid receptor system dependent mechanism.

Psychological essentialism is a widely studied concept within the social sciences, including the field of psychology. However, this concept has not been empirically explored when applied to perception of places. In this paper, we show that the essentialism vs. anti-essentialism philosophical controversy underlies the discussion carried out in human geography over what constitutes a place, understood as a meaningful location. In a series of three studies, we tested: (a) which places that conform to either essentialist or anti-essentialist criteria are judged by people as more meaningful and are preferred as living places, (b) what the structure of perceived place essentialism is, and (c) whether there exist affective markers of perceived place essentialism (emotions triggered by the essentialist vs. anti-essentialist features of places). In all three studies, pictures of respective locations were used. The studies showed that the places which conform to essentialist criteria were perceived to be more meaningful and were preferred to the anti-essentialist places. A two-dimensional essentialism vs. anti-essentialism structure described the perceived places the best. Affective reactions ordered along the dimensions of valence and arousal were systematically correlated to the perceived essentialism vs. anti-essentialism. The results confirm the claims made by cognitive psychologists that humans are psychological essentialists. The findings may contribute to the rising interest in the essentialism of artifacts.

Background: Ischemic preconditioning and postconditioning are the novel strategies of attaining cardioprotection against ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. Previous studies suggested the role of opioid pathway, however the class of opioid receptors responsible for this effect in humans remains unknown. The aim of the study was to assess the influence of opioids on simulated I/R injury outcomes in the hu­man myocardium. Methods: Trabeculae of the human right atrium were electrically driven in organ bath and subjected to simulated I/R injury. Morphine (10–4M, 10–5M, 10–6M) or d-opioid receptor agonist DADLE (10–8M, 10–7M, 10–6M) was used at the time of re-oxygenation. Additional trabecula was subjected to hypoxia protocol only (Control). Contractive force of the myocardium was assessed as the maximal force of a contraction (Amax), the rate of rise of the force of a contraction (Slope L) and relaxation as the rate of decay of the force of a contraction (Slope T). Results: Application of morphine 10–4M resulted in increase of Amax, Slope L and Slope T during re-oxygenation period as compared to Control (77.99 ± 1.5% vs. 68.8 ± 2.2%, p < 0.05; 45.72 ± 2.9% vs. 34.12 ± 5.1%, p < 0.05; 40.95 ± 2.5% vs. 32.37 ± 4.3%, p < 0.05). Parameters were not significantly different in the lower morphine concentrations. Application of DADLE 10–6M resulted in decrease of Amax and Slope L as compared to Control (68.13 ± 5.5% vs. 76.62 ± 6.6%, p < 0.05; 28.29 ± 2.2 vs. 34.80 ± 3.9%, p < 0.05). Conclusions: At re-oxygenation, morphine improves systolic and diastolic function of the human myo­cardium in the dose-dependent manner. Delta-opioid receptor stimulation attenuates systolic function of human heart muscle which remains in contrast to previous reports with animal models of I/R injury. (Cardiol J 2017; 24, 4: 419–425)

In these last decades consumer neuroscience has developed very rapidly, both as an academic field and as a marketing research practice. In this chapter we discuss different tools and measurements used by consumer neuroscience. Moreover we discuss both the potential and the limitations of different tools and methods coming from neuroscience and the difference in their application to scientific consumer research and applied consumer research—marketing research. As we have identified there is a lack of neuroscience research on social campaigns, toward the end we present examples of using EEG (Frontal Asymmetry Index) to understand our reaction toward advertised objects, in relation to an individuals’ political and ideological beliefs. In study 1 (n = 33), conducted prior to the presidential election in Poland, we tested EEG reaction toward the two candidates running for president representing the right wing and the left. The Frontal Asymmetry Index was analyzed in relation to respondents’ political attitudes: conservatism vs. liberalism. In the second study (n = 33) we tested brain reaction (EEG) to two social advertisements referring to homosexuality. This was also analyzed in relation to attitudes toward homosexuality. Both studies showed a correlation between the Frontal Asymmetry Index and attitudes: analyzed brain waves when presented with stimuli (pictures and ads) reflected attitudes shown toward the studied object. For both studies we used the EEG tool Emotiv.

Objectives We evaluated the safety and outcome of allo-HSCTs in myelofibrosis (MF). Methods A total of 27 patients with primary (n = 20) or secondary (n = 7) MF, aged 51 (21–63) yr, transplanted from HLA-matched related (59%) or unrelated (41%) donors were analyzed. Conditioning was reduced in 26 and myeloablative in one patient; and ATG was used in 25. Sources of stem cells were as follows: peripheral blood (21), bone marrow (4) or both (2). Results Prognostic factors that adversely affected overall survival (OS) in the multivariate analysis were as follows: recipient age >45 yr (HR = 10.55, P = 0.025) and unrelated donor (HR=3.73, P = 0.026). Post-transplant transfusion dependence adversely affected OS in the univariate analysis: dependence from either both RBCs and platelets (HR = 33.26, P = 0.001) or from either of them (HR = 10.53, P = 0.043). Of 16 JAK2V617F-positive patients evaluated post-transplant, it was eradicated in 69% and decreased in 25%. Acute GVHD III-IV developed in 19% and extensive chronic GVHD in 26% of patients; the relapse in four patients was treated with second allo-HSCT. Spleen decreased in all evaluated patients (n = 24). Fibrotic changes improved or disappeared in 80% of evaluated patients (n = 10). Conclusions Allo-HSCT may prolong survival, provide disease regression and improve quality of life in MF, especially in patients ≤45 yr transplanted from matched related donors. Achieving transfusion independence post-transplant indicates the favorable outcome.

Lymphoblastic leukemia/lymphoblastic lymphoma (ALL/LBL) is a neoplasm of precursor B or T-cells. These neoplastic cells may infiltrate bone marrow and peripheral blood (acute lymphoblastic leukemia) or their presence is confined to nodal or extranodal sites with only minimal evidence of blood and bone marrow involvement (lymphoblastic lymphoma). Herein, we report a male patient with infrequent neurological manifestation of T-LBL who failed autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (AHSCT). A lineage switch from T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma into B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia was observed at relapse and this phenomenon has not been described so far. Our case demonstrates difficulties which may occur in diagnosis and treatment of LBL/ALL. It should be underlined that neurological deficits resulting from spinal cord compression may be the first symptom of lymphoma. A switch within the lymphoblastic line may occur but it is an extremely rare finding. Its pathogenesis remains unclear, therefore further studies are highly required.

Introduction Imatinib mesylate (IM) remains the treatment of choice for chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) showing a remarkable efficacy and offers a perspective for long disease-free survival. Due to prolonged administration of IM, the questions about the possible impact on the development of secondary malignancies (SM) are raised. Objective To investigate the incidence and clinical outcome of secondary malignancies during IM therapy for CML. Material and Methods The records of 221 CML patients treated with IM between 2003–2013 in a single institution were reviewed. The Poisson regression model was used to estimate the relative risks for SM and death in CML patients. Results Secondary malignancies developed in eight out of the 221 patients (3.6%) receiving IM for a median of 61 months (range, 10–137 months). Female/male ratio was 5/3. Two patients were diagnosed with their CML at accelerated phase whereas 6 had chronic phase. The median age at IM initiation was 58 years (range, 31–72 years). Five of these 8 SM patients received IM after other treatments failure: interferon α (n=5), hydroxyurea (n=4) and cytarabine (n=1). Three patients received IM as a frontline therapy. All patients were on IM at 400mg daily at SM occurrence. The therapy for SM included surgery (n=3), chemotherapy only (n=3), and chemotherapy followed by radiotherapy (n=1). One patient did not receive treatment due to disseminated disease. All CML patients were in hematologic and complete cytogenetic response (CCR) at the time of SM development. All of them also met the criteria for major molecular response (BCR-ABLIS ≤0.1%). They continued their IM while receiving treatment for SM. Among eight patients with SM, five patients are alive and remain in CCR on IM whereas three patients died due to SM. The risks for SM development as well as death due to SM in CML patients were not statistically increased if compared to age-adjusted population. Conclusions The association between IM therapy for CML and SM development has not been found.

Introduction: Myelofibrosis (MF), chronic myeloid malignancy associated with shortened survival, in majority of patients develops de novo as Primary MF, but also polycythemia vera (PV) or essential thrombocythemia (ET) may progress into post-PV or post-ET MF. Although management of MF includes several treatment options, the only potentially curative treatment approach in MF is allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). Aim of this study was to evaluate the results of allo-HSCT in patients with MF treated in Katowice, Poland. Material and Methods: 27 pts (14 male and 13 female) with median age 51 years (range 21–63) were treated with allo-HCT due to PMF (20), post-PV (4) or post-ET (3) MF. 11,7,11,26 and 41% of pts had DIPSS 0,1,2,3 and 4, respectively. Median bone marrow cellularity was 70% (10-100%), fibrosis was collagen-type (14 pts including 2 with osteosclerosis), reticulin (10) or it was not specified (3). Splenomegaly was present in all pts: 13-20 cm (14 pts), > 20 cm (13 pts). JAK2V617F point mutation was present in 18 pts. Karyotype was available in 14 pts: in 9 normal, in 5 with variable abnormalities. Median time from diagnosis to allo-HCT was 1.5 (0.4–9.5) years. 16 pts (59.3%) received cells from HLA-matched related donor (MRD), 11 pts (40.7%) from unrelated donor: 10/10 (9) or 9/10 (2) HLA-A,B,C,DR,DQ alleles matched. Reduced intensity conditioning (RIC) was used in 26 pts, 1 patient received myeloablative conditioning (MC). Sources of stem cells were: peripheral blood (21), bone marrow (4) and both (2). All pts but one had chronic phase of MF at time of transplantation. Results: 14/27 (52%) pts are alive at median 3.4 (0.4-5.4) years after allo-HSCT: 11/16(69%) from MRD and 3/11(27%) from MUD, p=0.032. Graft failure, graft loss or PRCA were observed in 3, 5 and 1 pt, respectively. Absolute neutrophil count >0.5×109/L and platelet count >50×109/L were achieved at median 16 and 28 days, respectively. 12/27 (44%) pts reached complete blood count of Hb>10 g/dl, Plt>100 G/l and WBC>3.5 G/l; 11 of them (92%) are alive. 6/27 (22%) pts remained either RBC or PLT transfusions dependent post-transplant; 3 of them (50%) died. 9/27 (33%) pts remained both RBC and PLT transfusion dependent and all of them died. JAK2V617F mutation was completely eradicated in 11/16 evaluated previously positive patients (69%), decreased in 4 (25%) and stable in 1(6%) pt. Acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD) III-IV developed in 5/27 (19%) and extensive chronic GVHD in 5/19 (26%) pts. Relapse occurred in 4 pts and was treated with subsequent second transplant (in 1 pt thereafter by 3-rd allo-HSCT). Spleen length decreased at median by 5 (0.3-9.2) cm. Out of 7 pts with initial collagen fibrosis who were evaluated post-transplant, 1 had no fibrosis, 5 reticulin type and only in 1 pt collagen fibrosis was stable. Out of 3 pts with initial reticulin fibrosis it disappeared in 2 and progressed to collagen type in 1. Causes of death were GVHD (5 pts: 3 aGVHD, 2 cGVHD) and pancytopenia with either infection (7 pts) or CNS hemorrhage (1 pt). Conclusions: Allo-HSCT, the only curative treatment of myelofibrosis, provides chance of long survival, regression of the disease (lower stage of fibrosis, JAK2V617F eradication) and improved quality of life (transfusion independency, decreased splenomegaly). Transfusion independency may indicate good outcome. Favorable results are observed after allo-HSCT from MRD. Disclosures No relevant conflicts of interest to declare.
