Abstract

A simple, transparent, two-dimensional, nonlinear model of cell reorientation is constructed in this paper. The cells are attached to a substrate by “focal adhesions” that transmit the deformation of the substrate to the “stress fibers” in the cell. When the substrate is subjected to a deformation, say an in-plane bi-axial deformation with stretches $\lambda _{1}$ λ 1 and $\lambda _{2}$ λ 2 , the stress fibers deform with it and change their length and orientation. In addition, the focal adhesions can detach from the substrate and reattach to it at new nearby locations, and this process of detachment and reattachment can happen many times. In this scenario the (varying) fiber angle $\Theta $ Θ in the reference configuration plays the role of an internal variable. In addition to the elastic energy of the stress fibers, the energy associated with the focal adhesions is accounted for by a wiggly energy $\epsilon a \cos \Theta /\epsilon $ ϵ a cos Θ / ϵ , $0 < \epsilon \ll 1$ 0 < ϵ ≪ 1 . Each local minimum of this energy corresponds to a particular configuration of the focal adhesions. The small amplitude $\epsilon a$ ϵ a indicates that the energy barrier between two neighboring configurations is relatively small, and the small distance $2 \pi \epsilon $ 2 π ϵ between the local minima indicates that a focal adhesion does not have to move very far before it reattaches. The evolution of this system is studied using a gradient flow kinetic law, which is homogenized for $\epsilon \to 0$ ϵ → 0 using results from weak convergence. The results determine $(a)$ ( a ) a region of the $\lambda _{1}$ λ 1 , $\lambda _{2}$ λ 2 -plane in which the (referential) fiber orientation remains stuck at the angle $\Theta $ Θ and does not evolve, and $(b)$ ( b ) the evolution of the orientation when the stretches move out of this region as the fibers seek to minimize energy.

Abstract

As indicated in the European Fusion Roadmap, the main objective of the Divertor Tokamak Test facility (DTT) is to explore alternative power exhaust solutions for DEMO so as to mitigate the risk that the conventional divertor based on detached conditions to be tested on the ITER device cannot be extrapolated to a fusion reactor. The issues to be investigated by DTT include: • demonstrate a heat exhaust system capable of withstanding the large load of DEMO in case of inadequate radiated power fraction; • close the gaps in the exhaust area that cannot be addressed by present devices; • demonstrate that the possible (alternative or complementary) solutions (e.g., advanced divertor configurations or liquid metals) can be integrated in a DEMO device. In this paper, we describe a proposal for such a DTT, presented by ENEA in collaboration with a European team of scientists. The selection of the DTT parameters (a major radius of 2.15 m, an aspect ratio of about 3, an elongation of 1.6-1.8, a toroidal field of 6 T, and a flat top of about 100 s) has been made according to the following specifications: • edge conditions as close as possible to DEMO in terms of dimensionless parameters; • flexibility to test a wide set of divertor concepts and techniques; • compatibility with bulk plasma performance. • an upper bound of 500 M€ for the investment costs. This paper illustrates this DTT proposal showing how the basic machine parameters and concept have been selected so as to make a significant step toward the accomplishment of the power exhaust mission.

Abstract

In parallel with the programme to optimize the operation with a conventional divertor based on detached conditions to be tested on the ITER device, a project has been launched to investigate alternative power exhaust solutions for DEMO, aimed at the definition and the design of a divertor tokamak test facility (DTT). The DTT project proposal refers to a set of parameters selected so as to have edge conditions as close as possible to DEMO, while remaining compatible with DEMO bulk plasma performance in terms of dimensionless parameters and given constraints. The paper illustrates the DTT project proposal, referring to a 6 MA plasma with a major radius of 2.15 m, an aspect ratio of about 3, an elongation of 1.6-1.8, and a toroidal field of 6 T. This selection will guarantee sufficient flexibility to test a wide set of divertor concepts and techniques to cope with large heat loads, including conventional tungsten divertors; liquid metal divertors; both conventional and advanced magnetic configurations (including single null, snow flake, quasi snow flake, X divertor, double null); internal coils for strike point sweeping and control of the width of the scrape-off layer in the divertor region; and radiation control. The Poloidal Field system is planned to provide a total flux swing of more than 35 Vs, compatible with a pulse length of more than 100 s. This is compatible with the mission of studying the power exhaust problem and is obtained using superconducting coils. Particular attention is dedicated to diagnostics and control issues, especially those relevant for plasma control in the divertor region, designed to be as compatible as possible with a DEMO-like environment. The construction is expected to last about seven years, and the selection of an Italian site would be compatible with a budget of 500 M.

Abstract

As indicated in the European Fusion Roadmap, the main objective of the Divertor Tokamak Test facility (DTT) is to explore alternative power exhaust solutions for DEMO so as to mitigate the risk that the conventional divertor based on detached conditions to be tested on the ITER device cannot be extrapolated to a fusion reactor. The issues to be investigated by DTT include: • demonstrate a heat exhaust system capable of withstanding the large load of DEMO in case of inadequate radiated power fraction;• close the gaps in the exhaust area that cannot be addressed by present devices;• demonstrate that the possible (alternative or complementary) solutions (e.g., advanced divertor configurations or liquid metals) can be integrated in a DEMO device. In this paper, we describe a proposal for such a DTT, presented by ENEA in collaboration with a European team of scientists. The selection of the DTT parameters (a major radius of 2.15 m, an aspect ratio of about 3, an elongation of 1.6-1.8, a toroidal field of 6 T, and a flat top of about 100 s) has been made according to the following specifications: • edge conditions as close as possible to DEMO in terms of dimensionless parameters;• flexibility to test a wide set of divertor concepts and techniques;• compatibility with bulk plasma performance.• an upper bound of 500 M€ for the investment costs. This paper illustrates this DTT proposal showing how the basic machine parameters and concept have been selected so as to make a significant step toward the accomplishment of the power exhaust mission.

Abstract

In parallel with the programme to optimize the operation with a conventional divertor based on detached conditions to be tested on the ITER device, a project has been launched to investigate alternative power exhaust solutions for DEMO, aimed at the definition and the design of a divertor tokamak test facility (DTT). The DTT project proposal refers to a set of parameters selected so as to have edge conditions as close as possible to DEMO, while remaining compatible with DEMO bulk plasma performance in terms of dimensionless parameters and given constraints. The paper illustrates the DTT project proposal, referring to a 6 MA plasma with a major radius of 2.15 m, an aspect ratio of about 3, an elongation of 1.6–1.8, and a toroidal field of 6 T. This selection will guarantee sufficient flexibility to test a wide set of divertor concepts and techniques to cope with large heat loads, including conventional tungsten divertors; liquid metal divertors; both conventional and advanced magnetic configurations (including single null, snow flake, quasi snow flake, X divertor, double null); internal coils for strike point sweeping and control of the width of the scrape-off layer in the divertor region; and radiation control. The Poloidal Field system is planned to provide a total flux swing of more than 35 Vs, compatible with a pulse length of more than 100 s. This is compatible with the mission of studying the power exhaust problem and is obtained using superconducting coils. Particular attention is dedicated to diagnostics and control issues, especially those relevant for plasma control in the divertor region, designed to be as compatible as possible with a DEMO-like environment. The construction is expected to last about seven years, and the selection of an Italian site would be compatible with a budget of 500 M€.

Abstract

Electric joints are an essential part of every current carrying device. In the field of high temperature superconducting applications, quality of a contact between superconducting tapes and electric terminations is crucial for the device performance. When connecting tapes to each other, soldered contacts are commonly used. Recent reports have demonstrated that the resistance of this contact depends on the pressure applied during a soldering process, and the soldering temperature. When superconducting tapes are used in cables or in other applications, they have to be connected to copper terminations, e.g., to a current lead. Thus, tape-to-copper contacts are important. In superconducting cables, tapes are stacked together having a resistive electrical contact from tape to tape. The resistance of this contact depends on the pressure applied on the stack due to, for example, jacketing of the cable or during cool down. In this paper, the dependence of resistance between tapes on the applied pressure is reported. In this contribution two kinds of contacts, soldered ones and mechanical pressed, are presented and discussed. They are realized, respectively, between two superconducting ReBCO tapes from SuperPower, Inc. (SPI) and SuNAM, which were used for manufacturing HTS cable, and between superconducting tapes and copper. © 2014 IEEE.

Abstract

We have studied the feasibility of high-resolution laser interference lithography using a tabletop 46.9 nm, 1.5 ns Ar laser, combined with two different optical configurations based on a Lloyd’s mirror interferometer. Using one of these schemes we have encoded periodic grating structures with a half pitch of 42 nm and a vertical modulation of 5 nm on a commercial PMMA photoresist. Experiments performed with larger half-pitch structures and detailed theoretical calculations demonstrate the potentiality of producing periodic structures with a half-pitch resolution down to 20 nm and a height of up to 60 nm. The results can be of considerable interest for the development of a complete high-resolution lithographic process operating with the 47 nm laser wavelength. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
