1. Tracking with Straw Tubes in the PANDA Experiment

Abstract: The PANDA spectrometer will be built at the FAIR facility at Darmstadt (Germany) to perform accurate tests of the strong interaction through ¯pp and ¯pA annihilation studies. The charged particle tracking at PANDA will be done using both solid state and gaseous detectors. Among the latter, two straw tube detector systems will be built [1]. The cylindrical, central straw tube tracker features a high spatial and momentum resolution for a wide range of particle momenta from about 8 GeV/c down to a few 100 MeV/c, together with particle identification in the momentum region below about 1 GeV/c by measuring the specific energy-loss. A new technique, based on self-supporting straw double layers with intrinsic wire tension developed for the COSY-TOF straw tracker [2], has been adopted for the PANDA trackers. The development of the readout electronics for the straw tubes is ongoing. Prototypes have been produced and used to instrument straw tube modules that have been tested with cosmic rays and proton beams. Design issues of the PANDA straw tubes, together with the results of the prototype tests are presented.

Abstract: The GlueX experiment at Jefferson Lab has been designed to study photoproduction reactions with a 9-GeV linearly polarized photon beam. The energy and arrival time of beam photons are tagged using a scintillator hodoscope and a scintillating fiber array. The photon flux is determined using a pair spectrometer, while the linear polarization of the photon beam is determined using a polarimeter based on triplet photoproduction. Charged-particle tracks from interactions in the central target are analyzed in a solenoidal field using a central straw-tube drift chamber and six packages of planar chambers with cathode strips and drift wires. Electromagnetic showers are reconstructed in a cylindrical scintillating fiber calorimeter inside the magnet and a lead-glass array downstream. Charged particle identification is achieved by measuring energy loss in the wire chambers and using the flight time of particles between the target and detectors outside the magnet. The signals from all detectors are recorded with flash ADCs and/or pipeline TDCs into memories allowing trigger decisions with a latency of 3.3 $\mu$s. The detector operates routinely at trigger rates of 40 kHz and data rates of 600 megabytes per second. Abstract: PANDA (anti-Proton ANnihiliation at DArmstadt) is planned to be one of the four main experiments at the future international accelerator complex FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) in Darmstadt, Germany. It is going to address fundamental questions of hadron physics and quantum chromodynamics using cooled antiproton beams with a high intensity and and momenta between 1.5 and 15 GeV/c. PANDA is designed to reach a maximum luminosity of 2x10^32 cm^2 s. Most of the physics programs require an excellent particle identification (PID). The PID of hadronic states at the forward endcap of the target spectrometer will be done by a fast and compact Cherenkov detector that uses the detection of internally reflected Cherenkov light (DIRC) principle. It is designed to cover the polar angle range from 5{\deg} to 22{\deg} and to provide a separation power for the separation of charged pions and kaons up to 3 standard deviations (s.d.) for particle momenta up to 4 GeV/c in order to cover the important particle phase space. This document describes the technical design and the expected performance of the novel PANDA Disc DIRC detector that has not been used in any other high energy physics experiment (HEP) before. The performance has been studied with Monte-Carlo simulations and various beam tests at DESY and CERN. 4. Measurements of $\Omega^-$ Branching Fractions

Abstract: Using $e^+e^-$ annihilation data taken at the CESR collider with the CLEO-c detector, measurements of two main $\Omega^-$ branching fractions have been made using the reaction $\psi(2S)\to\Omega^-\overline{\Omega}^+$, hyperon pair production at $\sqrt{s}=3.69$~GeV, the peak of the $\psi(2S)$ resonance. $\Omega^-$ decay channels are identified through momentum distributions of charged particles, and systematics of the $\Omega^-$ branching fractions have been studied. The result gives: $\mathcal{B}(\Omega^- \to \Lambda^0 K^-) = (68.9\pm9.5\pm4.3)\%$, and $ \mathcal{B}(\Omega^- \to \Xi^0 \pi^-) = (19.0\pm4.0\pm1.2)\%$., Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures, submitted to PRD

Abstract: Using $e^+e^-$ annihilation data taken at the CESR collider with the CLEO-c detector, measurements of hyperon pair production cross sections and elastic and transition electromagnetic form factors have been made at the charmonium resonances: $\psi(2S)$, $\sqrt{s}=3.69$ GeV, $|Q^2|=13.6$ GeV$^2$, $\mathcal{L}=48$~pb$^{-1}$; $\psi(3770)$, $\sqrt{s}=3.77$ GeV, $|Q^2|=14.2$ GeV$^2$, $\mathcal{L}=805$~pb$^{-1}$; and $\psi(4170)$, $\sqrt{s}=4.17$ GeV, $|Q^2|=17.4$ GeV$^2$, $\mathcal{L}=586$~pb$^{-1}$. %High efficiency particle identification has resulted in good statistical precision in the results. Results with good statistical precision are obtained with high efficiency particle identification. Systematics of pair production cross sections, and form factors with respect to the number of strange quarks in the hyperons are studied, and evidence is presented for effects of diquark correlations in comparative results for $\Lambda^0$ and $\Sigma^0$, both of which have the same $uds$ quark content., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, submitted to Phys. Abstract: We report measurements of the photon beam asymmetry $\Sigma$ for the reactions $\vec{\gamma}p\to p\pi^0$ and $\vec{\gamma}p\to p\eta $ from the GlueX experiment using a 9 GeV linearly-polarized, tagged photon beam incident on a liquid hydrogen target in Jefferson Lab's Hall D. The asymmetries, measured as a function of the proton momentum transfer, possess greater precision than previous $\pi^0$ measurements and are the first $\eta$ measurements in this energy regime. Abstract: The exclusive charmonium production process in $\bar{p}p$ annihilation with an associated $\pi^0$ meson $\bar{p}p\to J/\psi\pi^0$ is studied in the framework of QCD collinear factorization. The feasibility of measuring this reaction through the $J/\psi\to e^+e^-$ decay channel with the PANDA (AntiProton ANnihilation at DArmstadt) experiment is investigated. Simulations on signal reconstruction efficiency as well as the background rejection from various sources including the $\bar{p}p\to\pi^+\pi^-\pi^0$ and $\bar{p}p\to J/\psi\pi^0\pi^0$ reactions are performed with PandaRoot, the simulation and analysis software framework of the PANDA experiment. It is shown that the measurement can be done at PANDA with significant constraining power under the assumption of an integrated luminosity attainable in four to five months of data taking at the maximum design luminosity., Comment: 25 pages, 22 figures

Abstract: Simulation results for future measurements of electromagnetic proton form factors at \PANDA (FAIR) within the PandaRoot software framework are reported. The statistical precision with which the proton form factors can be determined is estimated. The signal channel $\bar p p \to e^+ e^-$ is studied on the basis of two different but consistent procedures. The suppression of the main background channel, $\textit{i.e.}$ $\bar p p \to \pi^+ \pi^-$, is studied. Furthermore, the background versus signal efficiency, statistical and systematical uncertainties on the extracted proton form factors are evaluated using two different procedures. The results are consistent with those of a previous simulation study using an older, simplified framework. However, a slightly better precision is achieved in the PandaRoot study in a large range of momentum transfer, assuming the nominal beam conditions and detector performance.

Abstract: The GlueX experiment at Jefferson Lab ran with its first commissioning beam in late 2014 and the spring of 2015. Data were collected on both plastic and liquid hydrogen targets, and much of the detector has been commissioned. All of the detector systems are now performing at or near design specifications and events are being fully reconstructed, including exclusive production of $\pi^{0}$, $\eta$ and $\omega$ mesons. Abstract: Using 53 pb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ annihilation data taken at $\sqrt{s}=3.686$ GeV, a comprehensive study has been made of the radiative decays of samples of 5.1 million $J/\psi$ and 24.5 million $\psi(2S)$ into pairs of pseudoscalar mesons, $\pi^+\pi^-$, $\pi^0\pi^0$, $K^+K^-$, $K_S^0K_S^0$, and $\eta\eta$. Product branching fractions for the radiative decays of $J/\psi$ and $\psi(2S)$ to scalar resonances $f_0(1370,1500,1710,2100, \text{and} 2200)$, and tensor resonances $f_2(1270,1525, \text{and} 2230)$ have been determined, and are discussed in relation to predicted glueballs. 13. Precision Measurement of the Mass of the $D^{0}$ Meson and the Binding Energy of the $X(3872)$ Meson as a $D^0\overline{D^{0}}$ Molecule

Abstract: A precision measurement of the mass difference between the $D^0$ and $D^{*0}$ mesons has been made using 316~pb$^{-1}$ of $e^{+}e^{-}$ annihilation data taken at $\sqrt{s}=4170$~MeV using the CLEO-c detector. We obtain $\Delta M \equiv M(D^{*0})-M(D^0) =142.007\pm0.015$(stat)~$\pm$~0.014(syst)~MeV, as the average for the two decays, $D^0\to K^-\pi^+$ and $D^0\to K^-\pi^+\pi^-\pi^+$. The new measurement of $\Delta M$ leads to $M(D^{*0})=2006.850\pm0.049$~MeV, and the currently most precise measurement of the binding energy of the ``exotic'' meson X(3872) if interpreted as a $D^0D^{*0}$ hadronic molecule, $E_{b}(\text{X}(3872))\equiv M(D^0D^{*0})-M(\text{X}(3872))=3\pm192$ keV., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, published in PRD(RC)

14. First Measurements of Timelike Form Factors of the Hyperons, Lambda0, Sigma0, Sigma+, Xi0, Xi-, and Omega-, and Evidence of Diquark Correlations

Abstract: Using 805 pb^-1 of e+e- annihilation data taken with the CLEO-c detector at psi(3770), sqrt{s}=3770 MeV, we report the first measurements of the electromagnetic form factors of the Lambda0, Sigma0, Sigma+, Xi0, Xi-, and Omega- hyperons for the large timelike momentum transfer of |Q^2|=14.2 GeV^2. The form factors for the different hyperons are found to vary by nearly a factor two. It is found that |G_M(Lambda0)|=1.66(24) x |G_M(Sigma0)|. The Lambda0 and Sigma0 hyperons have the same uds quark content, but differ in their isospin, and therefore the spin of the $ud$ quark pair. It is suggested that the spatial correlation implied by the singlet spin--isospin configuration in the Lambda0 is an example of strong diquark correlations in the Lambda0, as anticipated by Jaffe and Wilczek. Abstract: Baryon-to-meson Transition Distribution Amplitudes (TDAs) encoding valuable new information on hadron structure appear as building blocks in the collinear factorized description for several types of hard exclusive reactions. In this paper, we address the possibility of accessing nucleon-to-pion ($\pi N$) TDAs from $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- \pi^0$ reaction with the future \={P}ANDA detector at the FAIR facility. At high center of mass energy and high invariant mass squared of the lepton pair $q^2$, the amplitude of the signal channel $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- \pi^0$ admits a QCD factorized description in terms of $\pi N$ TDAs and nucleon Distribution Amplitudes (DAs) in the forward and backward kinematic regimes. Assuming the validity of this factorized description, we perform feasibility studies for measuring $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- \pi^0$ with the \={P}ANDA detector. Detailed simulations on signal reconstruction efficiency as well as on rejection of the most severe background channel, i.e. $\bar{p}p \to \pi^+\pi^- \pi^0$ were performed for the center of mass energy squared $s = 5$ GeV$^2$ and $s = 10$ GeV$^2$, in the kinematic regions $3.0 < q^2 < 4.3$ GeV$^2$ and $5 < q^2 < 9$ GeV$^2$, respectively, with a neutral pion scattered in the forward or backward cone $| \cos\theta_{\pi^0}| > 0.5 $ in the proton-antiproton center of mass frame. Results of the simulation show that the particle identification capabilities of the \={P}ANDA detector will allow to achieve a background rejection factor of $5\cdot 10^7$ ($1\cdot 10^7$) at low (high) $q^2$ for $s=5$ GeV$^2$, and of $1\cdot 10^8$ ($6\cdot 10^6$) at low (high) $q^2$ for $s=10$ GeV$^2$, while keeping the signal reconstruction efficiency at around $40\%$. At both energies, a clean lepton signal can be reconstructed with the expected statistics corresponding to $2$ fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. Abstract: We propose to enhance the kaon identification capabilities of the GlueX detector by constructing an FDIRC (Focusing Detection of Internally Reflected Cherenkov) detector utilizing the decommissioned BaBar DIRC components. The GlueX FDIRC would significantly enhance the GlueX physics program by allowing one to search for and study hybrid mesons decaying into kaon final states. Such systematic studies of kaon final states are essential for inferring the quark flavor content of hybrid and conventional mesons. The GlueX FDIRC would reuse one-third of the synthetic fused silica bars that were utilized in the BaBar DIRC. A new focussing photon camera, read out with large area photodetectors, would be developed. We propose operating the enhanced GlueX detector in Hall D for a total of 220 days at an average intensity of 5x10^7 {\gamma}/s, a program that was conditionally approved by PAC39, Comment: 25 pages, 29 figures

17. High precision measurement of the masses of the $D^0$ and $K_S$ mesons

Abstract: Using 580 pb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ annihilation data taken with the CLEO--c detector at $\psi(3770)$, the decay $D^0(\overline{D}^0)\to K^\pm\pi^\mp \pi^+\pi^-$ has been studied to make the highest precision measurement of $D^0$ mass, $M(D^0)=1864.845\pm0.025\pm0.022\pm0.053$ MeV, where the first error is statistical, the second error is systematic, and the third error is due to uncertainty in kaon masses. As an intermediate step of the present investigation the mass of the $K_S$ meson has been measured to be $M(K_S)=497.607\pm0.007\pm0.015$ MeV. Abstract: Utilizing the full CLEO-c data sample of 818 pb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ data taken at the $\psi(3770)$ resonance, we update our measurements of absolute hadronic branching fractions of charged and neutral $D$ mesons. We previously reportedresults from subsets of these data. Using a double tag technique we obtain branching fractions for three $D^0$ and six $D^+$ modes, including the reference branching fractions $\mathcal{B} (D^0\to K^-\pi^+)=(3.934 \pm 0.021 \pm 0.061)\%$ and $\mathcal{B} (D^+ \to K^- \pi^+\pi^+)=(9.224 \pm 0.059 \pm 0.157)\%$. The uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. In these measurements we include the effects of final-state radiation by allowing for additional unobserved photons in the final state, and the systematic errors include our estimates of the uncertainties of these effects. Furthermore, using an independent measurement of the luminosity, we obtain the cross sections $\sigma(e^+e^-\to D^0\overline{D}{}^0)=(3.607\pm 0.017 \pm 0.056) \ \mathrm{nb}$ and $\sigma(e^+e^-\to D^+D^-)=(2.882\pm 0.018 \pm 0.042) \ \mathrm{nb}$ at a center of mass energy, $E_\mathrm{cm} = 3774 \pm 1$ MeV., Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures, and 6 tables. 19. First Measurement of the Electromagnetic Form Factor of the Neutral Kaon at a Large Momentum Transfer and the Effect of $SU(3)$ Breaking

Abstract: At large momentum transfers the photon interacts with the charges and spins of the constituent partons in a hadron. It is expected that the neutral kaon can acquire finite electromagnetic form factors because its wave function is affected by the order of magnitude difference between the mass of the strange quark and that of the down quark, or flavor $SU(3)$ breaking. We report on the first measurement of the form factor of neutral kaons at the large timelike momentum transfer of $|Q^2|=17.4$ GeV$^2$ by measuring the cross section for $e^+e^-\to K_SK_L$ at $\sqrt{s}=4.17$ GeV using CLEO-c data with an integrated luminosity of 586 pb$^{-1}$. We obtain $F_{K_SK_L}(17.4~\textrm{GeV}^2)=5.3\times10^{-3}$, with a 90% C.L. interval of $(2.9-8.2)\times10^{-3}$. This is nearly an order of magnitude smaller than $F_{K^+K^-}(17.4~\textrm{GeV}^2)=(44\pm1)\times10^{-3}$, and indicates that the effect of $SU(3)$ breaking is small. In turn, this makes it unlikely that the recently observed strong violation of the pQCD prediction, $F_{\pi^+\pi^-}(|Q^2|)/F_{K^+K^-}(|Q^2|)=f_\pi^2/f_K^2$, which is based on the assumption of similar wave functions for the pions and kaons, can be attributed to $SU(3)$ breaking alone., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, accepted to PLB

Abstract: The PANDA experiment will be built at the FAIR facility at Darmstadt (Germany) to perform accurate tests of the strong interaction through bar pp and bar pA annihilation's studies. To track charged particles, two systems consisting of a set of planar, closed-packed, self-supporting straw tube layers are under construction. The PANDA straw tubes will have also unique characteristics in term of material budget and performance. They consist of very thin mylar-aluminized cathodes which are made self-supporting by means of the operation gas-mixture over-pressure. This solution allows to reduce at maximum the weight of the mechanical support frame and hence the detector material budget. The PANDA straw tube central tracker will not only reconstruct charged particle trajectories, but also will help in low momentum (< 1 GeV) particle identification via dE/dx measurements. This is a quite new approach that PANDA tracking group has first tested with detailed Monte Carlo simulations, and then with experimental tests of detector prototypes. Abstract: The branching fractions of Ds meson decays serve to normalize many measurements of processes involving charm quarks. Using 586 pb^-1 of e+ e- collisions recorded at a center of mass energy of 4.17 GeV, we determine absolute branching fractions for 13 Ds decays in 16 reconstructed final states with a double tag technique. In particular we make a precise measurement of the branching fraction B(Ds -> K- K+ pi+) = (5.55 +- 0.14 +- 0.13)%, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic respectively. We find a significantly reduced value of B(Ds -> pi+ pi0 eta') compared to the world average, and our results bring the inclusively and exclusively measured values of B(Ds -> eta' X)$ into agreement. We also search for CP-violating asymmetries in Ds decays and measure the cross-section of e+ e- -> Ds* Ds at Ecm = 4.17 GeV., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures. Submitted to Physical Review D. Abstract: The primary motivation of the GlueX experiment is to search for and ultimately study the pattern of gluonic excitations in the meson spectrum produced in $\gamma p$ collisions. Recent lattice QCD calculations predict a rich spectrum of hybrid mesons that have both exotic and non-exotic $J^{PC}$, corresponding to $q\bar{q}$ states ($q=u,$ $d,$ or $s$) coupled with a gluonic field. A thorough study of the hybrid spectrum, including the identification of the isovector triplet, with charges 0 and $\pm1$, and both isoscalar members, $|s\bar{s}\ >$ and $|u\bar{u}\ > + |d\bar{d}\ >$, for each predicted hybrid combination of $J^{PC}$, may only be achieved by conducting a systematic amplitude analysis of many different hadronic final states. Detailed studies of the performance of the \gx detector have indicated that identification of particular final states with kaons is possible using the baseline detector configuration. The efficiency of kaon detection coupled with the relatively lower production cross section for particles containing hidden strangeness will require a high intensity run in order for analyses of such states to be feasible. We propose to collect a total of 200 days of physics analysis data at an average intensity of $5\times 10^7$ tagged photons on target per second. This data sample will provide an order of magnitude statistical improvement over the initial GlueX running, which will allow us to begin a program of studying mesons and baryons containing strange quarks. In addition, the increased intensity will permit us to study reactions that may have been statistically limited in the initial phases of GlueX. Overall, this will lead to a significant increase in the potential for \gx to make key experimental advances in our knowledge of hybrid mesons and excited $\Xi$ baryons., Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures

Abstract: Using 586 pb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ annihilation data taken with the CLEO-c detector at $\sqrt{s}=4170$ MeV, the peak of the charmonium resonance $\psi(4160)$, we analyze the decay $\psi(4160)\to \pi^+\pi^- J/\psi$, and report observation of the charged state $Z_c^\pm(3900)$ decaying into $\pi^\pm J/\psi$ at a significance level of $>5 \sigma$. We obtain $M(Z_c^\pm)=3886\pm4(\text{stat})\pm 2(\text{syst})$ MeV and $\Gamma(Z_c^\pm)=37\pm4(\text{stat})\pm 8(\text{syst})$ MeV, which are in good agreement with the results for this resonance obtained by the BES III and Belle Collaborations in the decay of the resonance Y(4260). 24. Is the Exotic Hadron X(3872) a D0 D*0 Molecule: Precision Determination of the Binding Energy of X(3872)

Abstract: It has been proposed that the recently discovered archetypical "exotic" meson, X(3872), with M(X(3872))=3871.68+-0.17 MeV/c^2, and an extremely narrow width, Gamma(X(3872))<1.2 MeV, is a hadronic molecule of bound D^0 and D^*0 mesons. If true, this would establish a new species of hadrons, distinct from qqbar mesons and qqq baryons. It is put to an important experimental test by making a high precision measurement of the proposed molecule's binding energy. Using 818 pb-1 of e+e- annihilation data taken with the CLEO-c detector at psi(3770), the decays D0 -> KS K+ K- and D^0(Dbar0) -> K+- pi-+ pi+ pi- have been studied to make the highest precision measurement of D0 mass, M(D0)=1864.851+-0.020+-0.019+-0.054 MeV/c^2, where the first error is statistical, the second error is systematic, and the third error is due to uncertainty in kaon masses, or 1864.851+-0.061 MeV/c^2 with all errors added in quadrature. This leads to M(D0 + D*0)=3871.822+-0.140 MeV/c^2, and the binding energy BE(X(3872)) = M(D0+D*0)-M(X(3872)) = +142+-220 keV. At the 90% confidence level this leads to the conclusion that X(3872) is either unbound by as much as 140 keV, or it is bound by less than 420 keV. If bound, X(3872) has a very large radius; the central value of binding energy corresponds to a radius of 12 fm, and the lower limit to 7 fm, both being uncomfortably large for a molecule., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

25. High Precision Measurements of the Form Factors of Pion, Kaon, and Proton at Large Timelike Momentum Transfers

Abstract: High precision measurements of the form factors of proton, pion, and kaon for timelike momentum transfers of |Q^2|=s=14.2 and 17.4 GeV^2 have been made. Data taken with the CLEO-c detector at sqrt(s)=3.772 GeV and 4.170 GeV, with integrated luminosities of 805 pb^-1 and 586 pb^-1, respectively, have been used to study $e^+e^-$ annihilations into pi+pi-, K+K^-, and ppbar. The perturbative QCD prediction that at large Q^2 the quantity Q^2F(Q^2) for vector mesons is nearly constant, and varies only weakly as the strong coupling constant alpha_S(Q^2) is confirmed for both pions and kaons. In contrast, a significant difference is observed between the values of the corresponding pQCD suggested near-constant quantity, |Q^4|G_M(|Q^2|)/mu_p for protons at |Q^2|=14.2 GeV^2 and 17.4 GeV^2. Abstract: We analyze a sample of 3 million quantum-correlated D0 D0bar pairs from 818 pb^-1 of e+e- collision data collected with the CLEO-c detector at E_cm = 3.77 GeV, to give an updated measurement of \cos\delta and a first determination of \sin\delta, where \delta is the relative strong phase between doubly Cabibbo-suppressed D0 --> K+pi- and Cabibbo-favored D0bar --> K+pi- decay amplitudes. With no inputs from other experiments, we find \cos\delta = 0.81 +0.22+0.07 -0.18-0.05, \sin\delta = -0.01 +- 0.41 +- 0.04, and |\delta| = 10 +28+13 -53-0 degrees. By including external measurements of mixing parameters, we find alternative values of \cos\delta = 1.15 +0.19+0.00 -0.17-0.08, \sin\delta = 0.56 +0.32+0.21 -0.31-0.20, and \delta = (18 +11-17) degrees. Abstract: This document describes the technical layout and the expected performance of the Straw Tube Tracker (STT), the main tracking detector of the PANDA target spectrometer. The STT encloses a Micro-Vertex-Detector (MVD) for the inner tracking and is followed in beam direction by a set of GEM-stations. The tasks of the STT are the measurement of the particle momentum from the reconstructed trajectory and the measurement of the specific energy-loss for a particle identification. Dedicated simulations with full analysis studies of certain proton-antiproton reactions, identified as being benchmark tests for the whole PANDA scientific program, have been performed to test the STT layout and performance. Abstract: Using data taken with the CLEO III detector, 1.09 fb-1 at Upsilon(1S), and 1.28 fb-1 at Upsilon(2S), branching fractions have been measured for the first time for exclusive decays of each resonance into one hundred different final states consisting of 4 to 10 light hadrons, pions, kaons, and protons. Significant strength is found in 73 decay modes of Upsilon(1S) and 17 decay modes of Upsilon(2S), with branching fractions ranging from 0.3x10^-5 to 110x10^-5. Abstract: The data for 9.3 million Upsilon(2S) and 20.9 million Upsilon(1S) taken with the CLEO III detector has been used to study the radiative population of states identified by their decay into twenty six different exclusive hadronic final states. In the Upsilon(2S) decays an enhancement is observed at a ~5 sigma level at a mass of 9974.6+-2.3(stat)+-2.1(syst) MeV. It is attributed to eta_b(2S), and corresponds to the Upsilon(2S) hyperfine splitting of 48.7+-2.3(stat)+-2.1(syst) MeV. In the Upsilon(1S) decays, the identification of eta_b(1S) is confirmed at a ~3 sigma level with M(eta_b(1S)) in agreement with its known value., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

Abstract: Using the data for 24.5x10^6 psi(2S) produced in e^+e^- annihilations at sqrt{s}=3686 MeV at the CESR-c e^+e^- collider and 8.6x10^6 J/psi produced in the decay psi(2S)->pi^+pi^-J/psi, the branching fractions for psi(2S) and J/psi decays to pairs of pseudoscalar mesons, pi^+pi^-, K^+K^-, and K_S K_L, have been measured using the CLEO-c detector. We obtain branching fractions Br(psi(2S)->pi^+pi^-)=(7.6+-2.5+-0.6)x10^-6, Br(psi(2S)->K^+K^-)=(74.8+-2.3+-3.9)x10^-6, Br(psi(2S)->K_S K_L)=(52.8+-2.5+-3.4)x10^-6, and Br(J/psi->pi^+pi^-)=(1.47+-0.13+-0.13)x10^-4, Br(J/psi->K^+K^-)=(2.86+-0.09+-0.19)x10^-4, Br(J/psi+-K_S K_L)=(2.62+-0.15+-0.14)x10^-4, where the first errors are statistical and the second errors are systematic. The phase differences between the amplitudes for electromagnetic and strong decays of psi(2S) and J/psi to 0^{-+} pseudoscalar pairs are determined by a Monte Carlo method to be \delta(psi(2S)_{PP}=(110.5^{+16.0}_{-9.5})^o and \delta(J/psi)_{PP}=(73.5^{+5.0}_{-4.5})^o. Abstract: The first measurements of the coherence factor R_{K_S^0K\pi} and the average strong--phase difference \delta^{K_S^0K\pi} in D^0 \to K_S^0 K^\mp\pi^\pm decays are reported. These parameters can be used to improve the determination of the unitary triangle angle \gamma\ in B^- \rightarrow $\widetilde{D}K^-$ decays, where $\widetilde{D}$ is either a D^0 or a D^0-bar meson decaying to the same final state, and also in studies of charm mixing. The measurements of the coherence factor and strong-phase difference are made using quantum-correlated, fully-reconstructed D^0D^0-bar pairs produced in e^+e^- collisions at the \psi(3770) resonance. The measured values are R_{K_S^0K\pi} = 0.70 \pm 0.08 and \delta^{K_S^0K\pi} = (0.1 \pm 15.7)$^\circ$ for an unrestricted kinematic region and R_{K*K} = 0.94 \pm 0.12 and \delta^{K*K} = (-16.6 \pm 18.4)$^\circ$ for a region where the combined K_S^0 \pi^\pm invariant mass is within 100 MeV/c^2 of the K^{*}(892)^\pm mass. These results indicate a significant level of coherence in the decay. In addition, isobar models are presented for the two decays, which show the dominance of the K^*(892)^\pm resonance. The branching ratio {B}(D^0 \rightarrow K_S^0K^+\pi^-)/{B}(D^0 \rightarrow K_S^0K^-\pi^+) is determined to be 0.592 \pm 0.044 (stat.) \pm 0.018 (syst.), which is more precise than previous measurements., Comment: 38 pages. Abstract: The first flavor-tagged amplitude analysis of the decay D0 to the self-conjugate final state K+K-pi+pi- is presented. Data from the CLEO II.V, CLEO III, and CLEO-c detectors are used, from which around 3000 signal decays are selected. The three most significant amplitudes, which contribute to the model that best fits the data, are phirho0, K1(1270)+-K-+, and non-resonant K+K-pi+pi-. Separate amplitude analyses of D0 and D0-bar candidates indicate no CP violation among the amplitudes at the level of 5% to 30% depending on the mode. Abstract: Using the entire CLEO-c psi(3770) to DDbar event sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 818 pb^-1 and approximately 5.4 x 10^6 DDbar events, we measure the form factors for the decays D0 to rho- e+ nu_e and D+ to rho0 e+ nu_e for the first time and the branching fractions with improved precision. A four-dimensional unbinned maximum likelihood fit determines the form factor ratios to be: V(0)/A_1(0) = 1.48 +- 0.15 +- 0.05 and A_2(0)/A_1(0)= 0.83 +- 0.11 +- 0.04. Assuming CKM unitarity, the known D meson lifetimes and our measured branching fractions we obtain the form factor normalizations A_1(0), A_2(0), and V(0). Abstract: Using a data sample of 2.59 x 10^7 psi(2S) decays obtained with the CLEO-c detector, we perform amplitude analyses of the complementary decay chains chi_c1 -> eta pi+ pi- and chi_c1 -> eta' pi+ pi-. We find evidence for a P-wave eta' pi scattering amplitude, which, if interpreted as a resonance, would have exotic J^PC = 1^-+ and parameters consistent with the pi_1(1600) state reported in other production mechanisms. We also make the first observation of the decay a_0(980) -> eta' pi and measure the ratio of branching fractions B(a_0(980) -> eta' pi)/B(a_0(980) -> eta pi) = 0.064 +- 0.014 +- 0.014. Abstract: Using e^+e^- collision data corresponding to 5.88M Y(3S) [25.9M psi(2S)] decays and acquired by the CLEO III [CLEO-c] detectors operating at CESR, we study the single-pion transitions from Y(3S) [psi(2S)] to the respective spin-singlet states h_{b[c]}. Utilizing only the momentum of suitably selected transition-pi^0 candidates, we obtain the upper limit B(Y(3S) -> pi^0 h_b) < 1.2\times 10^{-3} at 90% confidence level, and measure B(psi(2S) -> pi^0 h_c) = (9.0+-1.5+-1.3)\times 10^{-4}. Abstract: We present the results of a Dalitz plot analysis of D^0 to K^0_S pi^0 pi^0 using the CLEO-c data set of 818 inverse pico-barns of e^+ e^- collisions accumulated at sqrt{s} = 3.77 GeV. This corresponds to three million D^0 D^0-bar pairs from which we select 1,259 tagged candidates with a background of 7.5 +- 0.9 percent. Several models have been explored, all of which include the K^*(892), K^*_2(1430), K^*(1680), the f_0(980), and the sigma(500). We find that the combined pi^0 pi^0 S-wave contribution to our preferred fit is (28.9 +- 6.3 +- 3.1)% of the total decay rate while D^0 to K^*(892)^0 pi^0 contributes (65.6 +- 5.3 +- 2.5)%. Abstract: We present the first search for the decay $D^+_{s}\to \omega e^{+}\nu$ to test the four-quark content of the $D^+_{s}$ and the $\omega$-$\phi$ mixing model for this decay. We use 586 $\mathrm{pb}^{-1}$ of $e^{+}e^{-}$ collision data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 4170 MeV. Abstract: Using 586 $\textrm{pb}^{-1}$ of $e^{+}e^{-}$ collision data acquired at $\sqrt{s}=4.170$ GeV with the CLEO-c detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we report the first observation of $D_{s}^{*+} \to D_{s}^{+} e^{+} e^{-}$ with a significance of $5.3 \sigma$. The ratio of branching fractions $\calB(D_{s}^{*+} \to D_{s}^{+} e^{+} e^{-}) / \calB(D_{s}^{*+} \to D_{s}^{+} \gamma)$ is measured to be $[ 0.72^{+0.15}_{-0.13} (\textrm{stat}) \pm 0.10 (\textrm{syst})]%$, which is consistent with theoretical expectations.

Abstract: We report on a study of exclusive radiative decays of the Upsilon(1S) resonance into a final state consisting of a photon and two K0s candidates. We find evidence for a signal for Upsilon(1S)->gamma f_2'(1525); f_2'(1525)->K0sK0s, at a rate (4.0+/-1.3+/-0.6)x10^{-5}, consistent with previous observations of Upsilon(1S)->gamma f_2'(1525); f_2'(1525)->K+K-, and isospin. Combining this branching fraction with existing branching fraction measurements of Upsilon(1S)->gamma f_2'(1525) and J/psi->gamma f_2'(1525), we obtain the ratio of branching fractions: B(Upsilon(1S)->gamma f_2'(1525))/B(J/psi->gamma f_2'(1525))=0.09+/-0.02, approximately consistent with expectations based on soft collinear effective theory., Comment: submitted to Brief Reports

Abstract: Using 9.32, 5.88 million Upsilon(2S,3S) decays taken with the CLEO-III detector, we obtain five product branching fractions for the exclusive processes Upsilon(2S) => gamma chi_{b0,1,2}(1P) => gamma gamma Upsilon(1S) and Upsilon(3S) => gamma chi_{b1,2}(1P) => gamma gamma Upsilon(1S). We observe the transition chi_{b0}(1P) => gamma Upsilon(1S) for the first time. Using the known branching fractions for B[Upsilon(2S) => gamma chi_{bJ}(1P)], we extract values for B[chi_{bJ}(1P) => gamma Upsilon(1S)] for J=0, 1, 2. In turn, these values can be used to unfold the Upsilon(3S) product branching fractions to obtain values for B[Upsilon(3S) => gamma chi_{b1,2}(1P) for the first time individually. Abstract: We report the first observation of the decay D^+ -> eta' e^+ nu_e in two analyses, which combined provide a branching fraction of B(D+ -> eta' e nu) = (2.16 +/- 0.53 +/- 0.07) x 10^{-4}. Abstract: We report the first determination of the relative strong-phase difference between D^0 -> K^0_S,L K^+ K^- and D^0-bar -> K^0_S,L K^+ K^-. In addition, we present updated measurements of the relative strong-phase difference between D^0 -> K^0_S,L pi^+ pi^- and D^0-bar -> K^0_S,L pi^+ pi^-. Both measurements exploit the quantum coherence between a pair of D^0 and D^0-bar mesons produced from psi(3770) decays. The strong-phase differences measured are important for determining the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa angle gamma/phi_3 in B^- -> K^- D^0-tilde decays, where D^0-tilde is a D^0 or D^0-bar meson decaying to K^0_S h^+ h^- (h=pi,K), in a manner independent of the model assumed to describe the D^0 -> K^0_S h^+ h^- decay. Using our results, the uncertainty in gamma/phi_3 due to the error on the strong-phase difference is expected to be between 1.7 and 3.9 degrees for an analysis using B^- K^- D^0-tilde D^0-tilde -> K^0_S pi^+ pi^- decays, and between 3.2 and 3.9 degrees for an analysis based on B^- -> K^- D^0-tilde, D^0-tilde -> K^0_S K^+ K^- decays. A measurement is also presented of the CP-odd fraction, F_-, of the decay D^0 -> K^0_S K^+ K^- in the region of the phi -> K^+ K^- resonance. Abstract: We have searched for flavor-changing neutral current decays and lepton-number-violating decays of D^+ and D^+_s mesons to final states of the form h^+- e^-+ e^+, where h is either \pi or K. We use the complete samples of CLEO-c open-charm data, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 818 pb^-1 at the center-of-mass energy E_CM = 3.774 GeV containing 2.4 x 10^6 D^+D^- pairs and 602 pb^-1 at E_CM = 4.170 GeV containing 0.6 x 10^6 D^*+-_s D^-+_s pairs. No signal is observed in any channel, and we obtain 90% confidence level upper limits on branching fractions B(D^+ --> \pi^+ e^+ e^-) < 5.9 x 10^-6, B(D^+ --> \pi^- e^+ e^+) < 1.1 x 10^-6, B(D^+ --> K^+ e^+ e^-) < 3.0 x 10^-6, B(D^+ --> K^- e^+ e^+) < 3.5 x 10^-6, B(D^+_s --> \pi^+ e^+ e^-) < 2.2 x 10^-5, B(D^+_s --> \pi^- e^+ e^+) < 1.8 x 10^-5, B(D^+_s --> K^+ e^+ e^-) < 5.2 x 10^-5, and B(D^+_s --> K^- e^+ e^+) < 1.7 x 10^-5., Comment: 9 pages, available through http://www.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLNS/

Abstract: The decays of psi(2S) into gamma p bar{p}, pi^0 p bar{p} and eta p bar{p} have been studied with the CLEO-c detector using a sample of 24.5 million psi(2S) events obtained from e^+e^- annihilations at sqrt{s} = 3686 MeV. The data show evidence for the excitation of several N^* resonances in p pi^0 and p eta channels in pi^0 p bar{p} and eta p bar{p} decays, and f_2 states in gamma p bar{p} decay. Branching fractions for decays of psi(2S) to gamma p bar{p}, pi^0 p bar{p} and eta p bar{p} have been determined. No evidence for p bar{p} threshold enhancements was found in the reactions psi(2S)-> X p bar{p}, where X = gamma, pi^0, eta. We do, however, find confirming evidence for a p bar{p} threshold enhancement in J/psi-> gamma p bar{p} as previously reported by BES., Comment: 25 pages, 21 figures, accepted by PRD

Abstract: Using a sample of 25.9 million psi(2S) decays acquired with the CLEO-c detector at the CESR e^+e^- collider, we report branching fractions for the decays chi_cJ -> p p-bar pi^0, p p-bar eta, and p p-bar omega, with J=0,1,2. Our results for B(chi_cJ-> p p-bar pi^0) and B(chi_cJ-> p p-bar eta) are consistent with, but more precise than, previous measurements. Abstract: Using a large sample (~11800 events) of D^+ into K^- pi^+ e^+ nu_e and D^+ into K^- pi^+ mu^+ nu_mu decays collected by the CLEO-c detector running at the psi(3770), we measure the helicity basis form factors free from the assumptions of spectroscopic pole dominance and provide new, accurate measurements of the absolute branching fractions for D^+ into K^- pi^+ e^+ nu_e and D^+ into K^- pi^+ mu^+ nu_mu decays. We find branching fractions which are consistent with previous world averages. Our measured helicity basis form factors are consistent with the spectroscopic pole dominance predictions for the three main helicity basis form factors describing D^+ into anti-K*0 ell^+ nu_mu decay. The ability to analyze D^+ into K^- pi^+ mu^+ nu_mu allows us to make the first non-parametric measurements of the mass-suppressed form factor. Our result is inconsistent with existing Lattice QCD calculations. Finally, we measure the form factor that controls non-resonant s-wave interference with the D^+ into anti-K*0 ell^+ nu_mu amplitude and search for evidence of possible additional non-resonant d-wave or f-wave interference with the anti-K*0., Comment: We have made the replacement in order to make it clear that the branching fractions that we report are actually for D+ --> antiK*0 L+ nu decay. Hence, the branching fractions for D+ --> K+ pi L+ nu that we measure are corrected for the missing antiK*0 --> anti-K0 pi0 decay mode of the anti-K*0. We feel that this clarification is necessary.

Abstract: We report evidence for the ground state of bottomonium, eta_b(1S), in the radiative decay Upsilon(3S) --> gamma eta_b in e^+e^- annihilation data taken with the CLEO III detector. Using 6 million Upsilon(3S) decays, and assuming Gamma(eta_b) = 10 MeV/c^2, we obtain B(Upsilon(3S) --> gamma eta_b) = (7.1 +- 1.8 +- 1.1) X 10^{-4}, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. The statistical significance is about 4 sigma. The mass is determined to be M(eta_b) = 9391.8 +- 6.6 +- 2.0 MeV/c^2, which corresponds to the hyperfine splitting Delta M_{hf}(1S)_b = 68.5 +- 6.6 +- 2.0 MeV/c^2. Using 9 million Upsilon(2S) decays, we place an upper limit on the corresponding Y(2S) decay, B(Y(2S) --> gamma eta_b) < 8.4 X 10^{-4} at 90 % confidence level., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, accepted by Phyical Review D Rapid Communications
