Participants were stratified into obese and non-obese groups based on their BMI. Comprehensive assessments encompassed anthropometric evaluations, laboratory tests, and bone mineral density (BMD) measurements using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA).Results: From April to July 2022, we enrolled obese (n = 27, mean BMI = 30.54 ± 4.51 kg/m 2) and non-obese (n = 23, mean BMI = 21.97 ± 2.20 kg/m 2) individuals. The cohort’s average age was 36.08 ± 15.81 years, with a male-to-female ratio of 1.6:1. There was a difference in BMD, especially at the total hip, between the two groups. BMD at the spine (L1-L4), the neck of the femur, and ultra-distal radius were consistent across both groups. Weight exhibited a significant positive correlation with BMD at L1-L4 (r = 0.40, p = 0.003) and the left femur total (r = 0.27, p = 0.001). Haemoglobin levels were lower in the obese group compared to their non-obese counterparts (12.3 ± 2.0 vs 13.6 ± 1.9, p = 0.01). Multivariate analysis underscored weight as a crucial predictor for BMD at the spine (L1-L4, p = 0.003) and total hip (p = 0.001).Conclusion: Even with advanced age, obese post-COVID-19 individuals demonstrate a higher bone mineral density (BMD) at the hip than non-obese subjects.Keywords: COVID-19, obesity, bone mineral density, osteopenia, fracture risk

Patients discharged from the acute COVID care facility were recruited after 14 days of discharge if they fulfilled inclusion and exclusion criteria. The retrospective data was collected from the hospital records/EMR and analysed by the SPSSv23.Results: Fifty patients, who fulfilled the inclusion and exclusion criteria, were included in the study. The Mean age of patients was 53.4± 13.8 years (range 28– 77). Seventy six percent were male, and 38% had type 2 diabetes. Fever (94%), cough (78%) and breathlessness (68%), were the most common symptoms at presentation to acute care facility. Oxygen saturation at presentation had a negative correlation with D-Dimer, age, and C reactive protein. When patients were evaluated clinically, after 14 days (range 15 to 50 days) of the discharge, 82% of patients had at least one persistent symptom. Fatigue (74%) was the most common symptoms in follow-up followed by breathlessness (44%), and muscle weakness (36%). Two patients had persistent fever, even after negative RT PCR status.Conclusion: Patients discharged from the acute COVID care facility had a high prevalence of post-COVID symptoms even after 14 days.Keywords: COVID-19, diabetes, SARS-CoV-2, oxygen saturation, post-COVID

Background: Celiac disease (CD) is an autoimmune disorder characterized by gluten intolerance, primarily affecting the gastrointestinal system but potentially influencing cardiovascular health. Emerging evidence suggests an association between CD and myocardial infarction (MI), though studies have produced inconsistent results. This study aimed to systematically review and conduct a meta-analysis of existing literature to quantify the risk of MI in individuals diagnosed with CD., Methods: A comprehensive literature search was performed across PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science up to August 2024. Studies were included if they investigated the association between CD and MI in adult populations and provided relevant effect estimates. Data from eligible studies were extracted, and a random-effects meta-analysis was conducted to calculate pooled hazard ratios (HRs) and odds ratios (ORs), along with an assessment of heterogeneity. Statistical analysis has been performed by R software (V 4.4)., Results: A total of 8 studies were included in the systematic review. Pooled HR analysis showed no significant association between CD and MI (HR = 1.143, 95% CI: 0.619-2.109), and pooled OR analysis also revealed non-significant results (OR = 0.879, 95% CI: 0.481-1.606). High heterogeneity was observed (I 2  = 86% for HR, 99% for OR)., Conclusion: This meta-analysis found no significant association between CD and MI. However, substantial heterogeneity across studies indicates variability in results, highlighting the need for further research with larger, more homogeneous cohorts to better understand cardiovascular risks in CD patients. Background: As e-cigarettes gain popularity as potential tobacco cessation aids, concerns arise about their dual use with traditional cigarettes, especially among pregnant women, potentially subjecting both women and fetuses to heightened risks. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the overall prevalence of dual use of tobacco smoking and e-cigarette use in pregnant women., Methods: A literature search was conducted across databases including PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane on October 20, 2023. The included studies reported the number of pregnant women and the count of those who were dual users. Quality assessment was undertaken using the JBI tool. The pooled prevalence of dual use was determined via a random-effects model. All statistical analyses were executed using R software, version 4.3., Prospero: CRD42023486020., Results: Eighteen studies were analyzed, encompassing 5,983,363 pregnant women. The meta-analysis indicated an overall prevalence of 4.6% (95% CI: 2.0-10.3) for dual users with significant heterogeneity (I 2  = 100%). Subgroup analysis based on the country showed a prevalence of 4.9% (95% CI: 2.0 to 11.6) for USA and 8.1% (95% CI: 0.00 to 1.00) for UK. Meta-regression revealed reduction of prevalence of dual use from 2019 to 2023. A potential publication bias was indicated by the LFK index and the Doi plot., Conclusion: The dual consumption of e-cigarettes and traditional tobacco in pregnant women is a significant health concern, with a notable prevalence. Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a major cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide, with increased prevalence in individuals with chronic liver conditions and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonists (GLP-1 RAs) have shown promise in diabetes management and may influence liver disease progression. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess the efficacy of GLP-1 RAs in reducing the risk of HCC in patients with T2DM., Methods: We conducted a literature search of PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science up to August 1, 2024. Studies that evaluated the incidence of HCC in T2DM patients treated with GLP-1 RAs compared to other therapies were included. Meta-analyses were performed using a random-effects model to compute pooled hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs), and heterogeneity was assessed using the I² statistic. All statistical analyses were performed in R software version 4.3., Results: Eight studies met the inclusion criteria. The pooled analysis demonstrated that GLP-1 RA treatment was associated with a significant reduction in HCC risk compared to insulin or no GLP-1 RA treatment (pooled HR = 0.41, 95% CI: 0.28 to 0.55), with considerable heterogeneity (I² = 74%). Compared to metformin and DPP-4 inhibitors, GLP-1 RAs did not significantly alter HCC risk (HR = 0.99, 95% CI: 0.79 to 1.27 for metformin; HR = 1.05, 95% CI: 0.80 to 1.39 for DPP-4 inhibitors). However, GLP-1 RAs were associated with a reduced risk compared to sulfonylureas (HR = 0.78, 95% CI: 0.65 to 0.93)., Conclusion: GLP-1 RAs may offer protective benefits against HCC in T2DM patients compared to insulin or no GLP-1 RAs, but not significantly over other antidiabetic medications. Background: Malaria continues to be a critical public health concern in India, predominantly driven by complex interplays of ecological, climatic, and socioeconomic factors., Methods: This study aimed to assess the association between climatic variables (temperature and precipitation) and malaria incidence across India from 2010 to 2019, utilizing data from the Global Historical Weather and Climate Data for climate metrics and the Global Burden of Disease Study for malaria incidence rates. Generalized Linear Mixed Models (GLMMs) with a Poisson distribution were employed to analyze the data, adjusting for socio-economic status, as indexed by the Human Development Index (HDI)., Results: The results indicated a declining trend in both the number of malaria cases and age-specific incidence rates (ASIR) over the study period. In 2010, India reported approximately 20.7 million cases with an ASIR of 1688.86 per 100,000 population, which significantly reduced to 9.8 million cases and an ASIR of 700.80 by 2019. High malaria incidence was consistently observed in the states of Jharkhand and Odisha, whereas Sikkim reported the lowest numbers. Statistical analysis identified significant associations between malaria incidence and both temperature deviations and precipitation levels, with variations also linked to HDI, suggesting better detection and reporting capabilities in more developed areas., Conclusion: The study underscores the critical interactions between climatic variables and socio-economic factors in shaping the trends of malaria incidence across India. These findings highlight the necessity for adaptive, localized public health strategies that integrate environmental monitoring with socio-economic data to efficiently predict and manage malaria outbreaks., (© 2024. The potential of biomaterials in medical sciences has attracted much interest, especially in promoting tissue regeneration and controlling immune responses. As COVID-19 pandemic broke out, there was an increased interest in understanding more about how biomaterials could be employed to fight this dreaded disease, especially in the context of regenerative medicine. Out of the numerous regenerative medicine possibilities, stem cells and scaffolding (grafting) technology are two major areas in modern medicines and surgery. Mesenchymal stem cells are useful in tissue repair, tailored therapy and treating COVID-19. Using biomaterials in COVID-19 treatment is intricate that needs multi- and cross-disciplinary research. Cell-based therapy and organ transplant pose immunological rejection challenge. Immunomodulation enhanced, tumorigenicity decreased, inflammation addressed and tissue damage restricted bioengineered stem cells need clinical insights and validation. Advanced stem cell based therapies should ideally be effective, safe and scalable. Cost and scalability shall dictate the dawn of technoeconomically feasible regenerative medicine. A globally standard and uniform approval process could accelerate translational regenerative medicine. Researchers, patient advocacy organisations, the regulators and the biopharmaceutical stakeholders need to join hands for easy navigation of regulatory measures and expeditious market entry of regenerative medicine. This article summarises advances in biomaterials for regenerative medicine, and their possible therapeutic benefits in managing infectious diseases like COVID-19. It highlights the significant recent developments in biomaterial design, scaffold construction, and stem cell-based therapies to treat tissue damage and COVID-19 linked immunological disregulation. Background: Periodontitis, a prevalent inflammatory disease affecting tooth-supporting structures, leads to significant oral health and systemic complications if untreated. While traditional smoking is a well-known risk factor for periodontitis, the impact of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) on periodontal health remains unclear. This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to synthesize existing evidence on the effects of e-cigarette use on periodontitis and other periodontal outcomes., Methods: A literature search was conducted across PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science from their inception up to June 15 2024. Eligible studies included those assessing the impact of e-cigarette use on periodontal outcomes such as bleeding on probing (BOP), plaque index, probing depth, clinical attachment loss, and marginal bone loss. Data were extracted and analyzed using random-effect models to calculate pooled mean differences. R statistical software was used to perform meta-analyses., Results: Twelve studies were included in the meta-analysis. E-cigarette users showed a significantly lower mean BOP score compared to non-users (pooled mean difference: -14.233; 95% CI: -20.424 to -8.043; I² = 99%). For other periodontal outcomes, the findings were as follows: Plaque Index (MD: -0.160; 95% CI: -0.680 to 0.360; I² = 95%), Clinical Attachment Loss (MD: 0.120; 95% CI: -0.045 to 0.285; I² = 90%), Probing Depth (MD: 0.056; 95% CI: -0.070 to 0.182; I² = 85%), and Marginal Bone Loss (MD: -0.052; 95% CI: -0.168 to 0.064; I² = 88%)., Conclusion: Present studies have not identified a significant link between e-cigarette use and adverse effects on periodontal health, but the available research is limited. Introduction: Dyslipidemia with a considerable progression rate is a primary risk factor for CVDs if left untreated. Dietary interventions have explored the health influences of selenium on lipid profiles in adults, yet the findings remain contentious. This study seeks to determine if selenium supplementation can positively modify the lipid profile (total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), very-low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) in adults., Methods: Using predefined keywords, we searched online databases, including Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science Core Collection, and Google Scholar, for relevant studies published from inception through July 2024. A random-effects meta-analysis was then employed to pool the weighted mean differences (WMD) and 95 % CI for outcomes assessed by a minimum of three studies., Results: Initially 1205 studies were obtained out of which 25 RCTs were decided to be included for further analyses. Selenium supplementation reduced VLDL (WMD: -1.53; 95 % CI: -2.86, -0.20), but did not change TG (WMD: 1.12; 95 % CI: -4.51, 6.74), TC (WMD: -2.25; 95 % CI: -6.80, 2.29), LDL-C (WMD: 1.60; 95 % CI: -4.26, 7.46), and HDL-C levels (WMD: 0.98; 95 % CI: - 0.02, 1.98)., Conclusion: Our study showed significantly reduced VLDL but limited effects were observed in other lipid indexes. The biotic and abiotic stresses cause a significant decline in the yield and fruit quality traits, including antioxidants and minerals, of bitter gourd when grown in open fields. Protected cultivation technology has emerged to minimize such stresses. We investigated the effect of diverse environments (hi-tech greenhouse, naturally ventilated polyhouse, insect-proof net-house, and open field) and breeding lines on earliness, yield potential, antioxidant activities, and dietary nutrients. In the GYT analysis, 12 treatment combinations involving four growing environments and three breeding lines of bitter gourd were examined. The 3-year study suggested that the cultivation of bitter gourd crops in an insect-proof net house (NH) showed superior performance in earliness, yield-attributing traits, antioxidant activities, and dietary nutrients, followed by a naturally ventilated polyhouse (NP). However, NH was on par with NP and significantly better than the open-field-grown crop. The GYT biplot analysis highlighted that the combinations of NH and Pusa Rasdar outperformed and were the most stable treatments for all the traits investigated, followed by NH in conjunction with S32 and S57 lines. Potato is a globally significant crop, crucial for food security and nutrition. Assessing vital nutritional traits is pivotal for enhancing nutritional value. However, traditional wet lab methods for the screening of large germplasms are time- and resource-intensive. To address this challenge, we used near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) for rapid trait estimation in diverse potato germplasms. It employs molecular absorption principles that use near-infrared sections of the electromagnetic spectrum for the precise and rapid determination of biochemical parameters and is non-destructive, enabling trait monitoring without sample compromise. We focused on modified partial least squares (MPLS)-based NIRS prediction models to assess eight key nutritional traits. Various mathematical treatments were executed by permutation and combinations for model calibration. The external validation prediction accuracy was based on the coefficient of determination (RSQ external ), the ratio of performance to deviation (RPD), and the low standard error of performance (SEP). Higher RSQ external values of 0.937, 0.892, and 0.759 were obtained for protein, dry matter, and total phenols, respectively. Higher RPD values were found for protein (3.982), followed by dry matter (3.041) and total phenolics (2.000), which indicates the excellent predictability of the models. A paired t -test confirmed that the differences between laboratory and predicted values are non-significant. This study presents the first multi-trait NIRS prediction model for Indian potato germplasm. The developed NIRS model effectively predicted the remaining genotypes in this study, demonstrating its broad applicability. This work highlights the rapid screening potential of NIRS for potato germplasm, a valuable tool for identifying trait variations and refining breeding strategies, to ensure sustainable potato production in the face of climate change.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the burden of the COVID-19 pandemic on tuberculosis (TB) trends, patient demographics, disease types and hospitalisation duration within the Respiratory Medicine Department over three distinct phases: pre-COVID-19, COVID-19 and post-COVID-19., Design: Retrospective analysis using electronic medical records of patients with TB admitted between June 2018 and June 2023 was done to explore the impact of COVID-19 on patients with TB. The study employed a meticulous segmentation into pre-COVID-19, COVID-19 and post-COVID-19 eras., Setting: National Institute of Medical Science Hospital in Jaipur, Rajasthan, India., Primary and Secondary Outcome Measures: Primary outcome includes patients admitted to the Respiratory Medicine Department of the hospital and secondary outcome involves the duration of hospital stay., Results: The study encompassed 1845 subjects across the three eras, revealing a reduction in TB incidence during the post-COVID-19 era compared with the pre-COVID-19 period (p<0.01). Substantial demographic shifts were observed, with 5.2% decline in TB incidence among males in the post-COVID-19 era (n=529) compared with the pre-COVID-19 era (n=606). Despite the decrease, overall TB incidence remained significantly higher in males (n=1460) than females (n=385), with consistently elevated rates in rural (65.8%) as compared with the urban areas (34.2%). Extended hospital stays were noted in the post-COVID-19 era compared with the pre-COVID-19 era (p<0.01)., Conclusion: The study underscores the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on the TB landscape and hospitalisation dynamics. Notably, patient burden of TB declined during the COVID-19 era, with a decline in the post-COVID-19 era compared with the pre-COVID-19 era. Prolonged hospitalisation in the post-COVID-19 period indicates the need for adaptive healthcare strategies and the formulation of public health policies in a post-pandemic context. Tomato leaf curl New Delhi virus (TolCNDV) causes yellow mosaic disease, which poses a significant biotic constraint for sponge gourd cultivation, potentially resulting in crop loss of up to 100%. In the present investigation, 50 diverse genotypes were screened for 3 years under natural epiphytotic conditions. A subset of 20 genotypes was further evaluated across four different environments. The combined analysis of variance revealed a significant genotype × environment interaction. Eight genotypes consistently exhibited high and stable resistance in the preliminary screening and multi-environment testing. Furthermore, genotype plus genotype × environment interaction biplot analysis identified DSG-29 (G-3), DSG-7 (G-2), DSG-6 (G-1), and DSGVRL-18 (G-6) as the desirable genotypes, which have stable resistance and better yield potential even under diseased conditions. The genotype by yield × trait biplot analysis and multi-trait genotype-ideotype distance index analysis further validated the potential of these genotypes for combining higher yield and other desirable traits with higher resistance levels. Additionally, resistant genotypes exhibited higher activities of defense-related enzymes as compared to susceptible genotypes. Breast cancer, a global health concern predominantly affecting women, recorded 2.3 million new cases and 685,000 deaths in 2020. Alarmingly, projections suggest that by 2040, there could be over 3 million new cases and 1 million deaths. To assess breast cancer prevalence in 24 rural villages within a 60 km radius of NIMS Hospital, Tala Mod, Jaipur, Rajasthan, North India 303,121. A study involving 2023 participants conducted initial screenings, and positive cases underwent further tests, including ultrasound, mammography, and biopsy. SPSSv28 analysed collected data. Among 2023 subjects, 3 screened positive for breast lumps. Subsequent clinical examination and biopsy identified 1 normal case and 2 with breast cancer, resulting in a prevalence proportion of 0.0009 or 98 per 100,000. This study helps fill gap in breast cancer prevalence data for rural Rajasthan. The results highlight a concerning prevalence of breast cancer in the rural area near NIMS hospital, emphasizing the urgent need for increased awareness, early detection, and better healthcare access. Challenges like limited resources, awareness programs, and delayed diagnosis contribute to this high incidence. To address this, comprehensive approach is necessary, including improved screening programs and healthcare facilities in rural areas. The study presents the first to characterize novel Erucastrum canarianse Webb and Berthel (or Can) sterile cytoplasm-based CMS lines in Indian cauliflower (Brassica oleracea var. botrytis L.) and investigating their commercial suitability. Eleven Can-based CMS lines were examined for 12 agro-morphological and yield traits,18 floral traits, four seed yield traits together with three each of the Ogura (source: wild Japanese Radish) and Tour (Source: Brassica tournefortii) cytoplasms. All of the recorded floral and seed traits showed significant (P > 0.05) differences between the CMS lines of each group. Agro-morphological and yield traits in CMS lines and their maintainers, however, were non-significantly different. All the Can- and Ogura-based CMS lines showed flowering and appropriate seed formation by natural cross-pollination. Only two Tour cytoplasm-based CMS lines, Tour (DC-41-5) and Tour (DC-67), produced the smallest malformed flowers and stigma. The highest seed yield per plant in CMS lines was in Ogu (DC-98-4) and the lowest in Tour (DC-67). P14 and P15, two polymorphic mtDNA markers, were discovered for the Can CMS system for early detection. Five primers (ITS5a-ITS4, atpF-atpH, P16, rbeL and trnL), along with their maintainers, were sequenced and aligned to detect nucleotide changes including as additions and or deletions at different positions. Background: The evolving challenge of persistent symptoms post-Coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19), particularly debilitating cardio-pulmonary manifestations, necessitates further exploration. Our study aimed to assess the cardio-pulmonary complications in patients a year after hospital discharge from severe COVID-19, contrasting these with findings from a non-COVID group., Methods: The OneCoV2 study, a prospective, case-control study, was conducted at a tertiary care teaching hospital in northern India. We enrolled 43 subjects, with a mean age of 25.57 ± 7.94 years (COVID group) and 27.30 ± 8.17 years (non-COVID group). Comprehensive tests included pulmonary function tests, cardiac function tests, 6-min walk tests, and laboratory investigations., Results: Significant differences were found in the pulmonary function [forced vital capacity (FVC) (p = 0.037), forced expiratory flow (FEF) 25-75 % (p = 0.013)], and cardiac function [left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) (p = 0.032), heart rate (HR) (p = 0.047)], along with the six-minute walk test results between the two groups. In the COVID group, Pearson's correlation showed a negative correlation between FVC and C-reactive protein (CRP) [r = -0.488, p = 0.007] and a positive correlation between the six-minute walk test [r = 0.431, p = 0.003] and HR [r = 0.503, p = 0.013]., Conclusions: Our data suggest that pulmonary abnormalities are prevalent in COVID patients even after 1-year of hospital discharge. Cardiac biomarkers also show an inclination towards the COVID group. The paper describes a new method for the rapid determination of Technetium (Tc) in sediment samples using solid-phase extraction chromatography (SPEC) with a novel methyl triphenyl phosphoniumnitrate (MTPN) resin. The effectiveness of the resin in selectively recovering Tc was evaluated in both batch and column mode and exploited for rapid analysis of 'Tc'. The procedure involves the acid digestion of samples, pre-concentration of fission products in supernatant and co-precipitation of actinides with Fe(OH) 3 , followed by selective recovery of Tc by SPEC using a column filled with MTPN resin. The recovered Tc was then radiometrically assayed using beta counting. Bitter gourd ( Momordica charantia L.) is an important vine crop of the Cucurbitaceae family and is well known for its high nutritional and medicinal values. However, the genetic variation remains largely unknown. Herein, 96 diverse bitter gourd genotypes were undertaken for diversity analysis using 10 quantitative traits, and 82 simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers. Out of 82 SSRs, 33 were polymorphic and the mean polymorphism information content (PIC) value was 0.38. Marker, JY-003 revealed a maximum (0.81) PIC value and, the number of alleles per locus ranged from 2 to 7 (average 3.46). The value of gene diversity showed the presence of a significant level of polymorphism among these genotypes. The unweighted pair group method (UPGMA) cluster analysis grouped the genotypes into two major clusters of which Cluster I comprised mostly small and medium-fruited genotypes of both M. charantia var. charantia and M. charantia var. muricata , whereas Cluster II included mostly long and extra-long fruited genotypes. Furthermore, these genotypes were divided into six distinct groups based on population structure analysis. The diversity analysis based on 10 quantitative traits revealed that earliness and high-yielding ability were exhibited by the predominantly gynoecious line DBGS-21-06 followed by DBGS-48-00. The principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that the first two components exhibited more than 50% of the total genetic variation. The present study deciphered a higher magnitude of agro-morphological and genetic diversity in 96 bitter gourd genotypes. Therefore, trait-specific genotypes identified in this study could be utilized in breeding programmes directed towards the development of improved cultivars and hybrids of bitter gourd.

Background: Data on the correlation between glycemic variability and depression in nondiabetic patients remain limited. Considering the link between increased glycemic variability and cardiovascular risks, this relationship could be significant in depressed patients., Methods: In this single-center pilot study, we utilized Flash Glucose Monitoring (Abbott Libre Pro) to study glycemic variability. The CES-D (Center for Epidemiological Studies- Depression) scale was employed to measure depression levels. Based on CES-D scores, patients were classified into two groups: those with scores ≥ 33 and those with scores < 33. We analyzed various glycemic variability indices, including HBGI, CONGA, ADDR, MAGE, MAG, LI, and J-Index, employing the EasyGV version 9.0 software. SPSS (version 28) facilitated the data analysis., Results: We screened patients with depression visiting the department of psychiatry, FGM was inserted in eligible patients of both the groups which yielded a data of 196 patient-days (98 patient-days for CES-D ≥ 33 and 98 patient-days for CES-D < 33). High temperatures present a formidable challenge to the cultivation of hot pepper, profoundly impacting not only vegetative growth but also leading to flower and fruit abscission, thereby causing a significant reduction in yield. To unravel the intricate genetic mechanisms governing heat tolerance in hot pepper, an F 2 population was developed through the crossing of two distinct genotypes exhibiting contrasting heat tolerance characteristics: DLS-161-1 (heat tolerant) and DChBL-240 (heat susceptible). The F 2 population, along with the parental lines, was subjected to comprehensive phenotyping encompassing diverse morphological, physiological, and biochemical heat-related traits under high temperature conditions (with maximum temperature ranging from 31 to 46.5°C and minimum temperature from 15.4 to 30.5°C). Leveraging the Illumina Nova Seq-6000 platform, Double digest restriction-site associated DNA sequencing (ddRAD-seq) was employed to generate 67.215 Gb data, with subsequent alignment of 218.93 million processed reads against the reference genome of Capsicum annuum . Subsequent variant calling and ordering resulted in 5806 polymorphic SNP markers grouped into 12 LGs. Further QTL analysis identified 64 QTLs with LOD values ranging from 2.517 to 11.170 and explained phenotypic variance ranging from 4.05 to 19.39%. Among them, 21 QTLs, explaining more than 10% phenotypic variance, were identified as major QTLs controlling 9 morphological, 3 physiological, and 2 biochemical traits. Interestingly, several QTLs governing distinct parameters were found to be colocalized, suggesting either a profound correlation between the QTLs regulating these traits or their significant genomic proximity. In addition to the QTLs, we also identified 368380 SSR loci within the identified QTL regions, dinucleotides being the most abundant type (211,381). These findings provide valuable insights into the genetics of heat tolerance in hot peppers. The association between frailty and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among Asian patients with liver cirrhosis and sarcopenia remains largely unexplored. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a cross-sectional study involving individuals aged 32 to 69 years, all diagnosed with liver cirrhosis. The chronic liver disease questionnaire (CLDQ) was used to assess HR-QoL, the CLDQ score was used as an outcome to measure the factors related to HR-QoL, and the liver frailty index (LFI) was used to assess the frailty status. The association between the frailty status and the CLDQ summary scales was investigated using the correlation coefficient and multiple regression analyses. A total of 138 patients in the frail ( n = 62) and non-frail ( n = 76) groups with (alcohol: 97; viral: 24; autoimmune: 17; and cryptogenic: 12) were included in the study. Age, CTP score, and model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) sodium were significantly higher in the frail group. In the CLDQ domains, there was a significant difference between the frail and non-frail groups ( p value = 0.001). In health-related quality-of-life summary measures, there was a strong negative correlation between frailty and the scores for activities, emotional function, and fatigue ( p value = 0.001). When comparing frail to non-frail patients, these characteristics demonstrated significantly increased odds as indicated by their adjusted odds ratios: OR 3.339 ( p value = 0.013), OR 3.998 ( p value = 0.006), and OR 4.626 ( p value = 0.002), respectively.

To address the complex challenges faced by our planet such as rapidly changing climate patterns, food and nutritional insecurities, and the escalating world population, the development of hybrid vegetable crops is imperative. Vegetable hybrids could effectively mitigate the above-mentioned fundamental challenges in numerous countries. Utilizing genetic mechanisms to create hybrids not only reduces costs but also holds significant practical implications, particularly in streamlining hybrid seed production. These mechanisms encompass self-incompatibility (SI), male sterility, and gynoecism. The present comprehensive review is primarily focused on the elucidation of fundamental processes associated with floral characteristics, the genetic regulation of floral traits, pollen biology, and development. Specific attention is given to the mechanisms for masculinizing and feminizing cucurbits to facilitate hybrid seed production as well as the hybridization approaches used in the biofortification of vegetable crops. Furthermore, this review provides valuable insights into recent biotechnological advancements and their future utilization for developing the genetic systems of major vegetable crops.

Polymer coatings are used for a number of applications such as for decorative purposes, to protect surfaces and as functional parts of devices. The mechanical integrity of the coatings is critical to their function and hence it is important that the coatings do not fail during their lifetime. Here, we present a simple model to determine conditions under which drying films of polymer solutions can crack. The model accounts for the properties of the polymer film and substrate and predicts the tensile stress developed in the drying film. As the tensile stress increases and exceeds a critical value, the film relaxes by nucleating a crack. The model predicts a critical thickness below which the film does not crack. The predicted critical cracking thickness is compared with experiments performed on drying films of silicone resin on six different substrates with the value of Young's modulus spanning over six decades. The predicted trend matches the measurements.

Nutritionally rich cucumber seeds remain in demand in the agricultural, health and cosmetic sectors as they are essential for a successful crop stand establishment and seed-based products. However, the production of cucumber seeds is impeded by source limitation and nutrient deficiency. The foliar application of micronutrients can supplement this deficiency and overcome the physiological setback. An experiment was undertaken to compare the impacts of the foliar application of Fe and Zn, as nanoparticles and fertilizers, on the yield and seed quality of cucumber under open and protected environments. A foliar spray of nano-ZnO (ZnNPs) and nano-Fe 3 O 4 (FeNPs) at 100, 200 and 300 mg L -1 , as well as ZnSO 4 and FeSO 4 as fertilizer (0.5%), was conducted at the vegetative stage and pre- and post-flowering stages. The NPs had a greater efficacy in an open field than in the protected (naturally ventilated poly house) environment. The application of both NPs increased seed yield (51.7-52.2%), total chlorophyll content (15.9-17.3%) and concentration of Zn and Fe in the fruit and the seed, by 2.0-58.5% and 5.0-30.5%, respectively. A significant increase in starch, soluble proteins, soluble sugars and oil content was observed in the seeds from the NP treated plants. NP treatment also enhanced the germination-related parameters, such as percent germination (16.8-17.0%), rate of germination (18.0-22.2%) and seedling vigor (59.8-72.6%). The biochemical characterization showed a significant improvement in the seed water uptake and the activity of hydrolytic enzymes (amylase and protease) in the germinating seed. The involvement of reactive oxygen species (superoxide anion and hydrogen peroxide) and antioxidant enzymes (Superoxide dismutase, Catalase and Peroxidase) in the germination process was indicated by an increase in their activities in the seeds from NP treated plants. Hence, the study proposes the potential benefit of the foliar application of 300 mg L -1 ZnNPs and 200 mg L -1 FeNPs at crucial stages of plant growth to improve the yield and seed quality in cucumbers.

Aim and Scope: Glycemic variability (GV) denotes the fluctuations in the glucose values around the baseline. High glycemic variability is associated with a higher risk of diabetes-associated complications. In this study, we sought to determine the impact of therapeutic interventions based on flash glucose monitoring on rapid, short-term glycemic variability. We also studied the prevalent albuminuria in diabetic kidney disease and its effect on glycemic variability., Methods: In a 14-day, single-center, prospective intervention study, we measured the GV indices at baseline (days 1-4) and ten days after ambulatory glucose profile-based intervention using flash glucose monitoring (Abbott Libre Pro, Abbott Diabetes Care, Alameda, California, USA) in patients with type 2 diabetes. An EasyGV calculator was used to estimate the flash glucose monitoring (FGM)-derived measures of GV. The primary outcome was to assess the impact of FGMS-based therapeutic interventions on glycemic variability markers: SD, mean amplitude of glycemic excursion [MAGE], continuous overall net glycemic action [CONGA], absolute means of daily differences [MODD],  M  value, and coefficient of variance [%CV], AUC below 70 mg/dl, low blood glucose index, AUC above 180 mg/dl [AUC >180], high blood glucose index [HBGI], and J index. Time-related matrices (time in range (%), time above range (%), and time below range (%) were also calculated from the ambulatory glucose profile. Renal function parameters (serum creatinine, estimated glomerular filtration rate, urine albumin excretion) were calculated. The GV with regard to albumin excretion rate was compared., Results: Fifty-eight T2DM patients (63.8%, males) with a mean age of 51.5 ± 11.9 years were studied. When compared with baseline (days 1-4), on day 14, there was a significant improvement in mean sensor glucose (mg/dl) median (IQR) [155 (116-247) vs 131 (103-163) (p ≤0.001)], JINDEX [15,878 (7,706-28,298) vs 8,812 (5,545-14,130) (p ≤0.001)], HBGI [361 (304-492) vs 334 (280-379) (p ≤0.001)], MAGE (mg/dl) [112 (8-146) vs 82 (59-109) (p ≤0.001)], M-value [2,477 (1,883-3,848) vs 2,156 (1,667-2,656) (p ≤ 0.001)], MAG (mg/dl) [111 (88-132) vs 88 (69-102) (p ≤ 0.001)]. Patients with albuminuria at baseline had high mean sensor glucose (mg/dl) median (IQR) [190 (131-200) vs 131 (112-156) (p = 0.001)], CONGA (mg/dl) median (IQR) [155 (101-165) vs 108 (83-120) (p = 0.001)], JINDEX, HBGI, MAGE (mg/dl), and M-value are, median (IQR) [20,715 (10,970-26,217 vs 91,118 (6,504-15,445)) (p ≤ 0.01)], [415 (338-423) vs 328 (292-354) (p = 0.001)], [125 (102-196) vs 103 (74-143) (p ≤ 0.01)], [3,014 (2,233-3,080) vs 2,132 (1,788-2,402) (p ≤0.01)], respectively., Conclusion: In type 2 diabetes, flash glucose monitoring-guided therapeutic interventions can reduce glycemic variability in a brief span (10 days) of time. Background: Like other natural pigments, betalains have a stability problem. Copigmentation can be explored to address this issue. In this study, black carrot anthocyanins were used for the first time as copigment with betalains so that copigmented betalains with enhanced stability could be developed to withstand deteriorative processing and storage conditions., Results: Increase in hyperchromic and bathochromic shift with subsequent increase in black carrot anthocyanin extract (0.250 g L -1 ) addition from 0.2 to 1.0 mL L -1 was observed in native betalain pigments from 0.28 to 1.90 and 538 nm to 564 nm, respectively. For maximum recorded bathochromic shift, 0.8 mL L -1 addition of copigment was optimized. Copigmented betalain pigment showed better stability in comparison with native pigment, when exposed to light, temperature more than 60 °C and ≥1.0 g L -1 NaCl. At constant incubation time (3 h), copigmented betalains degraded up to 20.79-41.43% whereas the non-copigmented counterpart degraded up to 83.49-86.86% at 60, 75 and 90 °C, respectively. Lower rate constant (k) and enhanced activation energy (E a ) showed higher thermostability of copigmented betalains. With constant light exposure, the half-life value of betalains was 145.2 h, which increased approximately twofold (274.08 h) after copigmentation. The t 1/2 of betalain pigment at 10%, 15% and 18% salt addition was 81.12, 75.36 and 83.52 h, which increased to 186.96, 226.56 and 152.88 h after copigmentation., Conclusion: These findings support that black carrot anthocyanin is a potential and compatible copigment for water-soluble betalain pigment that enhances stability of betalains under extreme processing conditions. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry., (© 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.)

The coatings in osmotic tablets play a critical role in controlling the release of active pharmaceutical ingredient. Coatings are formed by spraying dilute polymer solution onto the tablet surface. During drying, the films develop shrinkage stress, which can cause cracking. The coatings are also subject to large tensile stress generated by osmotic pressure during the dissolution process, which may rupture the coating. Despite the role of tensile stress in causing fracture in osmotic tablet coatings, a rigorous quantification of the drying stress, mechanical properties and microstructure is missing. The present work fills this gap via detailed measurement of drying stress, Young's modulus and fracture properties of osmotic tablet coatings of cellulose acetate mixed with two different plasticisers, namely polyethylene glycol and hydroxypropyl cellulose. The measurements were complemented with imaging of the surface and the cross-section of films using scanning electron microscopy so as to relate the drying stress and mechanical properties to the microstructure of the films. The phase separation during the drying process increases the pore size, while simultaneously decreasing the modulus and the peak drying stress of the drying films. The results suggest that films with strong adhesion to the tablet surface will not rupture but if the films delaminate, the drying stress are sufficiently large to cause rupture. Background: This study aimed to investigate the long-term effects of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) supplementations on the parameters associated with improved prognosis in sarcopenic patients with liver cirrhosis (LC) and evaluate its impact on cirrhotic-related events. Methods: A 24-week, single-center, randomized, open-label, controlled, two cohort parallel-group intervention study was carried out by comparing the efficacy of BCAAs against lactoalbumin (L-ALB) on 106 sarcopenic patients with LC. The BCAA (intervention) group was treated with 7.2 g BCAA per dose, whereas the L-ALB group was treated with 6.3 g of L-ALB. The primary outcome was to assess the effect of BCAA on the parameters of sarcopenia, such as muscle mass, muscle strength, and physical performance. The secondary outcomes were to study the combined survival and maintenance of liver function changes in laboratory and prognostic markers over the duration of 6 months. Results: The treatment with BCAA leads to the significant improvement in sarcopenic parameters, such as muscle strength, muscle function, and muscle mass. The total cirrhotic-related complications and cumulative event-free survival occurred fewer in the BCAA group than in the L-ALB group. In addition, prognostic markers improved significantly in the study. Cauliflower is an important extensively grown cool season vegetable in India. Black rot and downy mildew are major devastating diseases reducing yield and quality of the crop. To tackle these through host plant resistance, a marker-assisted backcross breeding method was followed to pyramid a black rot-resistant gene ( Xca1bo ) and a downy mildew-resistant gene ( Ppa3 ) from donors BR-161 and BR-2, respectively, into the background of Pusa Meghna cauliflower cultivar. Marker-assisted backcross breeding was followed up to BC 2 generation using SCAR marker ScOPO-04 833 and SSR marker BoGMS0624 for black rot and downy mildew resistance genes in foreground selection, respectively. In background selection, at each stage of backcrossing, 47 parental polymorphic SSR markers were used. The graphical genotyping of the five two-gene ( Xca1boXca1boPpa3Ppa3 ) homozygous BC 2 F 2 plants showed an average recovery of 85.44% of the Pusa Meghna genome with highest genome recovery of 91.7%. The genome contribution of donor parents (BR-161 and BR-2) was 8.26 with 6.34% of residual heterozygousity. The backcross derived pyramided lines BC 2 F 2:3-7-16 and BC 2 F 2:3-7-33 showed high resistance to both the diseases and exhibited higher yield and vitamin C content as compared with recipient parent Pusa Meghna. It is, therefore, evident from this study that resistant genes can be introgressed successfully into a Pusa Meghna cultivar without any yield penalty, benefitting farmers with reduced input cost and consumers with chemical residue free produce. The paper reports a new rapid radioanalytical procedure for the determination of plutonium (Pu) in sediments by solid phase extraction chromatography (SPEC) using Bis-(2-ethylhexyl) carbamoyl methoxy phenoxy-bis-(2-ethylhexyl) grafted resin, abbreviated as Benzodioxodiamide (BenzoDODA) grafted resin. The resin was synthesized and evaluated for its sorption behaviour towards Pu in batch and column mode to determine its efficacy for selective recovery of Pu from sediment samples. The analytical procedure was based on the radiochemical separation of samples by acid digestion, followed by preconcentration of actinides by co-precipitation with Fe(OH) 3 and finally selective recovery of Pu by SPEC using a column filled with BenzoDODA grafted resin. Pu was then radiometrically assayed by preparing alpha disc sources with electro-deposition followed by alpha spectrometry. The method was further validated with IAEA reference materials. The extensive hydrolysis of tetravalent actinides leads to polynuclear formations through oxygen bridging facilitating the formation of colloids as end products. The pH, ionic strength has phenomenal effects on Thorium colloids formation. The quantitative estimation of colloids facilitates the fraction of soluble fraction into ionic, polymeric and colloidal forms of thorium. The colloids accountability and precipitate characterization explains the discrepancies in estimated solubility limits. The supernatants of long equilibrated (∼3 years) saturated thorium solution under various pH (5- 11) and ionic strengths (0-3 M NaClO 4 ) were analysed by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (ICP-MS) and Ion Chromatography (IC) to determine total and ionic thorium respectively. Laser Induced Breakdown Detection (LIBD) was employed to determine the colloid size and concentrations. The precipitates were characterized by calorimetry and XRD to determine the solubility limiting phase. The results of pH, IC, ICP-MS, and LIBD measurements on the aged thorium samples are discussed with regard to the mechanism of the formation of thorium colloids. The results revealed the formation of colloids having particle size (10-40 nm) at concentrations (10 9 -10 11 particles/mL). The colloids accountancy resulted in estimated solubility products to 2-4 orders lower than their inclusion as soluble thorium. The soluble thorium was fractionated quantitatively into ionic, polymeric and colloidal forms of thorium. Background: Specific treatment for COVID-19 is still an unmet need. Outcomes of clinical trials on repurposed drugs have not been yielding success. Therefore, it is necessary to include complementary approaches of medicine against COVID-19., Purpose: This study was designed to evaluate the impact of traditional Indian Ayurvedic treatment regime on asymptomatic patients with COVID-19 infection., Study Design: It is a placebo controlled randomized double-blind pilot clinical trial., Methods: The study was registered with Clinical Trial Registry-India (vide Registration No. CTRI/2020/05/025273) and conducted at the Department of Medicine in National Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Jaipur, India. 1 g of Giloy Ghanvati (Tinospora cordifolia) and 2 g of Swasari Ras (traditional herbo-mineral formulation) and 0.5 g each of Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) and Tulsi Ghanvati (Ocimum sanctum) were given orally to the patients in treatment group twice per day for 7 days. Medicines were given in the form of tablets and each tablet weighed 500 mg. While, Swasari Ras was administered in powdered form, 30 min before breakfasts and dinners, rest were scheduled for 30 min post-meals. Patients in the treatment group also received 4 drops of Anu taila (traditional nasal drop) in each nostril every day 1 h before breakfast. Patients in the placebo group received identical-looking tablets and drops, post randomization and double blinded assortments. RT-qPCR test was used for the detection of viral load in the nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal swab samples of study participants during the study. Chemiluminescent immunometric assay was used to quantify serum levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) on day 1 and day 7 of the study., Results: By day 3, 71.1 % and 50.0 % patients recovered in the treatment and placebo groups, respectively. Treatment group witnessed 100 % recovery by day 7, while it was 60.0 % in the placebo group. Average fold changes in serum levels of hs-CRP, IL-6 and TNF-α in treatment group were respectively, 12.4, 2.5 and 20 times lesser than those in the placebo group at day 7. There was 40 % absolute reduction in the risk of delayed recovery from infection in the treatment group., Conclusions: Ayurvedic treatment can expedite virological clearance, help in faster recovery and concomitantly reduce the risk of viral dissemination. Reduced inflammation markers suggested less severity of SARS-CoV-2 infection in the treatment group. Radionuclide migration in aquatic environment is influenced by its sorption onto colloids/mineral oxides and the presence of organic complexing anions. With a view to understand the sorption of trivalent actinides by mineral oxides in presence of organic acid, in the present study, Eu(III), malonic acid (MA) and γ-alumina are considered as representatives of trivalent actinides, low molecular weight natural occurring organic acid and aluminol sites, respectively. The influence of MA on sorption of Eu(III) by γ-alumina was elucidated by batch sorption, spectroscopic techniques and surface complexation modeling, for the first time. Attenuated Total Reflection-Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopic studies of MA sorbed on γ-alumina revealed the presence of two inner-sphere surface complexes. Batch sorption for binary (alumina-Eu(III)) and ternary (alumina-Eu(III)-MA) systems were investigated as a function of pH, Eu(III) concentration and sequential addition of Eu(III)/MA. The pH edge for Eu(III) sorption shifts to higher pH with increasing Eu(III) concentration. In ternary systems, Eu(III) sorption is significantly enhanced at pH < 4.5. Eu(III) speciation on γ-alumina is independent of addition sequence of Eu(III)/MA. Time resolved fluorescence spectroscopy of Eu(III) sorbed on γ-alumina exhibited two surface species, XOEu 2+ and (YO) 2 Eu + . The enhancement in I 616 /I 592 and lifetime for ternary systems, as compared to binary system, at low pH, indicates the participation of Eu-MA complexes in the formation of surface species in ternary systems. The diffuse layer model has been employed to successfully model the experimental sorption profiles of binary and ternary systems, using code FITEQL 4.0, by considering the surface species identified by spectroscopic techniques., (Copyright © 2020. Background: - Health care workers are under a substantial level of psychological impact due to the risk of exposure, workload and moral dilemmas as the nation is on upsurge of COVID-19 cases. Since there are limited research available on this issue from India, we have decided to conduct an online survey to evaluate mental health outcome and professional quality of life among healthcare worker during COVID-19 pandemic., Methods: - From 25th May to 10th June 2020, a web-based (FRONT-LINE COVID) survey was conducted. Impact of event revised (IES-R), Connor-Davidson Resilience scale (CD-RISC) and Professional Quality of life (ProQOL) and Feeling related questions were administered among Healthcare workers from different departments of hospital., Results: - Among the respondents,218 (52.1%) belongs from the low-risk unit and 200 (47.9%) from the 'high-risk unit' including a higher proportion of nurses 191 (45.7%), female 282(67.5%), aged 31-40 years (48.3%), and married 220 (52.6%). Overall female nurses (P=>0.001), doctors (P=0.02) those were working in an emergency unit (P= <0.001) were at greater risk of psychological distress. Middle-aged (31- 40 years) had a higher level of resilience (p=0.02) contrast to this; working in COVID-19 unit was associated with a lower scale of resilience (p=0.009). Resilience and QoL were an important predictor for psychological distress., Conclusion: - Results implicate interventions for stress management and social support among medical staff working in the pandemic., (© 2020 Published by Elsevier Masson SAS.)

Thin films of polymer coatings have important industrial applications ranging from paints and coatings to pharmaceuticals. In many applications, the coatings are obtained by applying thin films of dilute polymer solutions, wherein the solvent evaporates to leave behind a thin polymer film. In some cases, the thin films may crack due to shrinkage stresses developed during drying. While a number of studies have focused on the stress development, the phenomenon of cracking in polymer films is not fully investigated. In the present work, thin films of a silicone polymer solution were cast on substrates of varying Young's moduli and investigated for cracking as a function of film thickness and substrate modulus. Micro-Raman spectroscopy measurements show that thin films dry uniformly while thick films form a skin at the top surface leading to slow drying rates. Transverse stresses were measured using the cantilever technique and related to the extent of cracking in the film. We investigated the influence of substrate rigidity on the cracking behavior and found that decreasing the stiffness of the substrate increases the extent of cracking.

The present study aims at understanding the sorption mechanism of Eu(iii) by γ-alumina in the presence of picolinic acid (PA), a decontaminating agent used in the nuclear industry, through batch sorption studies, spectroscopy and surface complexation modeling. PA is weakly sorbed by γ-alumina, with the sorption increasing with pH up to 4.5 and decreasing with further increase in pH. Attenuated Total Reflection-Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) measurements indicate that PA forms an inner sphere surface complex on γ-alumina. The presence of PA does not affect Eu(iii) sorption by γ-alumina at low [Eu(iii)], while it drastically reduces Eu(iii) sorption at high [Eu(iii)]. Similar Eu(iii) sorption profiles with different addition sequences of Eu(iii) and PA suggest identical Eu(iii) surface species for Eu(iii) sorption on γ-alumina in the presence of PA which has been validated by time resolved fluorescence spectroscopy (TRFS). TRFS measurements of Eu(iii) sorbed on γ-alumina in the absence (binary systems) and presence of PA (ternary systems) exhibited two components 1 & 2. The lifetime value of component 1 in ternary systems is enhanced compared to that in binary systems signifying the formation of new surface species containing Eu(iii), PA and the γ-alumina surface whereas the similarity of component 2 in both the binary and ternary systems reveals an almost identical coordination environment of Eu(iii) in the two types of system. Using the spectroscopic information obtained from TRFS, Eu(iii) sorption, at high [Eu(iii)], in ternary systems has been successfully modeled by considering Eu(iii) bridged PA surface species at both low and high affinity sites of γ-alumina. At low [Eu(iii)] both PA and Eu(iii) bridged ternary surface complexes only at high affinity sites of γ-alumina could describe the Eu(iii) sorption adequately.

The present study was undertaken to know the genetics of purple color of cauliflower curds using a Sicilian purple 'PC-1' and a white curding mid-late group genotype of Indian cauliflower. For this, a cross was attempted between 'DC-466' (white curd) and 'PC-1' (purple curd) and observed intermediate level of purple pigmentation on curds in F 1 plants. Segregation of F 2 population (173) revealed that the purple color of the curd was governed by a single gene dominant over white, but the expression of trait was incomplete. It was substantiated by segregation of plants of BC 1 and F 2:3(intermediate) generations into 1(white):1(intermediate) and 1(white):2(intermediate):1(intense), respectively. The F 2 , B 1 , and B 2 generations segregated into purple(intermediate to intense): white curding plants in the ratio of 126: 47, 26:24, and 40:0, respectively fitting well with the Mendelian ratio of single gene for purple curds. However, purple pigmentation on curds ranged from very light to intense, which corroborated with the wide range of anthocyanin content in F 2 (3.81-48.21 mg/100 g fw). Out of three molecular markers from high resolution map of Pr gene in purple color cauliflower 'Graffiti', only BoMYB3 marker could distinguish purple and white curding parents but did not show co-segregation while investigated in F 2 population. Expression of BoMYB1 gene was up regulated in both the purple curd genotypes 'PC-1' and 'Graffiti' in comparison to white curded 'DC-466', while BoMYB2 gene was slightly upregulated in 'PC-1' but down regulated in 'Graffiti'. Occurrence of 'broccoli type' F 2 individuals and their genetic stability in F 2:3 support the intermediate position of 'Sicilian purple' between broccoli (Calabrese) and cauliflower. There was not any correlation between curd coloration and pigmentation on apical leaf and stem portion, indicating difference of expression in 'PC-1' than 'Graffiti'. The authors describe the synthesis and characterization of 3-mercaptopropionylamidoxime functionalized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) for visual detection of uranium (U) by cloud point extraction. The method is capable of quantifying U at the concentration limits set by the World Health Organization in drinking water i.e., 30.0 ng mL -1 . The method is based on the gradual color change from red to blue that occurs as a result of the interaction between uranyl ion and the modified AuNPs leading to particle aggregation. Such analyte-triggered aggregation results in AuNP's peak absorbance quenching as well as red shift in the wavelength range of 520 to 543 nm. The colorimetric response at 520 nm is linear in the 2-100 ng mL -1  U concentration range, and the limit of detection is 0.3 ng mL -1 . No interferences by other ions are found, and the relative standard deviation is ≤4% (for n = 5). The method is validated by analyzing a certified reference material (NIST SRM 1640a; natural water), and also applied to the quantification of U in four (spiked) water samples. The assessment of cucurbituril (CBn) for selective removal of actinides from nuclear waste streams requires comprehensive understanding of binding parameters and coordination of these complexes. The present work is the first experimental report on complexation of actinide ion with Cucurbit[5]uril (CB5) in solution. The thermodynamic parameters (ΔG, ΔH and ΔS) for complexation of CB5 with U(VI) in formic acid water medium were determined using microcalorimetry and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The enthalpy and entropy of complexation revealed the partial binding of U(VI) to CB5 portal. The partial binding was confirmed by spectroscopic techniques viz. extended X absorption fine structure spectroscopy (EXAFS), 1 H and 13 C NMR. The EXAFS χ(r) versus r spectra for U-CB5 complex has been fitted from 1.4 to 3.5 Å with two oxygen shells and a carbon shell. The presence of three carbon atom in secondary shell shows the involvement of only three carbonyl oxygens directly bonding to U(VI) which is in contrast to that calculated from gas phase DFT calculation of unhydrated system. The combined effect of hydration and formic acid encapsulation led to the enhanced stability of partially bound U(VI) to CB5. In the present work the binding of formic acid has also been studied by fluorescence spectroscopy. ESI-MS data shows the unusual stabilization of U(VI) by CB5 in gas phase., (Copyright © 2018. Background: Groundnut bud necrosis virus (GBNV) ( Tospovirus genus, Bunyaviridae family) infects the major crops of solanaceae, leguminosae and cucurbitaceae in India. Temperature is an important factor which influences the plant growth and development under diseased conditions., Objective: In the present study, we evaluated the effect of four different temperatures on the symptoms expression and viral RNA accumulation in the GBNV inoculated cowpea plants., Material and Methods: For the evaluation of viral symptoms and RNA accumulation, we used 2-3 leaf stage cowpea plants grown in the controlled conditions. GBNV was mechanically inoculated by sap method to the cowpea plants and inoculated plants were incubated at four different temperatures (30, 25, 20 and 15 °C)., Results: The first visible symptom of GBNV infection at the inoculated site was observed in the form of chlorotic spots which were converted into the necrotic spots as the infections succeeded. Some yellow mosaic symptoms were also observed at the systemic site during viral infection cycle. Plants incubated at higher (30 and 25 °C) temperatures showed a severe necrosis and a higher viral RNA accumulation at the inoculated site and facilitated the viral spread at the systemic site. However, viral RNA accumulation was less at the systemic site than the inoculated site. In contrast, symptoms' expression and viral RNA accumulation were decreased at the inoculated site at low (20 and 15 °C) temperatures, no viral symptoms were observed at the systemic site (15 °C); in addition to viral RNA accumulation suppression at this site. GBNV infection at the inoculated site induced the higher accumulation of H 2 O 2 followed by the induction of cell death at higher temperatures (30 and 25 °C) than the lower (20 and 15 °C) temperatures., Conclusion: This study suggests that viral RNA accumulation parallels with the H 2 O 2 production and induction of cell death by GBNV infection in cowpea plants is temperature dependent.

The feed wastes and waste water treatment plants are the major sources for the entry of N-oxides into the soils then to aquatic life. The complexation of actinides with potentially stable anthropogenic ligands facilitate the transportation and migration of the actinides from the source confinement. The present study describes the determination of thermodynamic parameters for the complexation of Th(IV) with the three isomeric pyridine monocarboxylates (PCNO) namely picolinic acid-N-oxide (PANO), nicotinic acid-N-oxide (NANO) and isonicotinic acid-N-oxide (IANO). The potentiometric and isothermal calorimetric titrations were carried out to determine the stability and enthalpy of the formations for all the Th(IV)-PCNO complexes. Th-PANO complexes are more stable than Th-NANO and Th-IANO complexes which can be attributed to chelate formation in the former complexes. Formation of all the Th-PCNO complexes are endothermic and are entropy driven. The geometries for all the predicted complexes are optimized the energies, bond distances and charges on individual atoms are obtained using TURBOMOLE software.
