Hemolytic disease is a common cause of fetal morbidity and mortality. The anti-M blood cell alloantibodies are one of the most severe causes of fetal anemia and intrauterine death. Since no standard treatment method has been established for pregnant women, the management of this pathology is through conventional methods used for treating Rh blood-type alloimmunization. For the first time, we report a unique case wherein a pregnant woman who had intrauterine fetal death in two previous pregnancies with very low titers of anti-M antibodies had negative effects during very early pregnancy, which were successfully managed in her third pregnancy with a novel protocol. We aggressively managed the blood type (anti-M antibody) and blood platelet incompatibilities (anti-HPA-4b antibody) through combination therapy twice a week (46 cycles between 12 and 34 weeks) of double filtration plasmapheresis (DFPP) and high-dose γ-globulin (20–40 g/wk). An elective cesarean section was performed at 34 weeks, and a healthy neonate was born without detection of alloantibodies in the umbilical cord blood. Our report suggests that the combination of DFPP and intravenous immunoglobulin should be considered for the treatment of anti-M alloimmunization in pregnant women.

Recent advancements in cultural heritage preservation have increasingly focused on the development and application of new composites, harnessing the diverse properties of their components. This study reviews the current state of research and practical applications of these innovative materials, emphasizing the use of inorganic phosphatic materials (in particular the hydroxyapatite) and various polymers. The compatibility of phosphatic materials with calcareous stones and the protective properties of polymers present a synergistic approach to addressing common deterioration mechanisms, such as salt crystallization, biological colonization, and mechanical weathering. By examining recent case studies and experimental results, this paper highlights the effectiveness, challenges, and future directions for these composites in cultural heritage conservation. The findings underscore the potential of these materials to enhance the durability and aesthetic integrity of heritage stones, promoting sustainable and long-term preservation solutions.

Abstract We evaluated the association between gestational age at threatened preterm birth (TPTB) diagnosis and preterm birth (PTB) incidence using a nationwide birth cohort. Data of 94,236 women with singleton deliveries from the Japan Environment and Children’s Study (enrolled between 2011 and 2014) were analysed. Participants were divided based on parity and gestational age at TPTB diagnosis (22–24, 25–27, 28–30, 31–33, and 34–36 weeks). Multivariable logistic regression models were used to calculate the odds ratios (ORs) for PTB before 37 and 34 weeks in women from all groups, using participants without TPTB as the reference. The adjusted ORs for PTB before 37 weeks were the highest in the latest gestational age group in nulliparous and multiparous women without previous PTB, while those before 34 weeks were the highest in the earliest and latest gestational age group in multiparous women without previous PTB and in the earliest gestational age group in multiparous women with previous PTB. The association between gestational age at TPTB diagnosis and PTB incidence varies based on maternal parity and PTB before 37 or 34 weeks. Further studies with detailed clinical data and a unified TPTB diagnosis protocol are necessary to clarify this association.

Given Japan's unique social background, it is critical to understand the current risk factors for postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) to effectively manage the condition, especially among specific groups. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the current risk factors for PPH during planned cesarean section (CS) in Japan. This multicenter retrospective cohort study was conducted in two tertiary maternal-fetal medicine units in Fukushima, Japan and included 1,069 women who underwent planned CS between January 1, 2013, and December 31, 2022. Risk factors for PPH (of > 1000 g and > 1500 g) were assessed using multivariate logistic regression analysis, considering variables such as maternal age, parity, assisted reproductive technology (ART) pregnancy, pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI), uterine myoma, placenta previa, gestational age at delivery, birth weight categories, and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP). Multivariate linear regression analyses were conducted to predict estimated blood loss during planned CS. ART pregnancy, a pre-pregnancy BMI of 25.0-29.9 kg/m2, and uterine myoma increased PPH risk at various levels. Maternal smoking increased the risk of >1500 g PPH (adjusted odds ratio: 3.09, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.16-8.20). Multivariate linear analysis showed that advanced maternal age (B: 83 g; 95% CI: 27-139 g), ART pregnancy (B: 239 g; 95% CI: 121-357 g), pre-pregnancy BMI of 25.0-29.9 kg/m2 (B: 74 g; 95% CI: 22-167 g), uterine myoma (B: 151 g; 95% CI: 47-256 g), smoking (B: 107 g; 95% CI: 13-200 g), and birth weight > 3,500 g (B: 203 g; 95% CI: 67-338 g) were associated with blood loss during planned CS. Considering a patient's clinical characteristic may help predict bleeding in planned CSs and help improve patient safety.

This work aims to evaluate the potential use of natural wastes (in particular, clam shells) to synthesize one of the most well-known and versatile materials from the phosphate mineral group, hydroxyapatite (HAP). The obtained material was characterized in terms of morphology and composition using several analytical methods (scanning electron microscopy—SEM, X-ray diffraction—XRD, X-ray fluorescence—XRF, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy—FTIR, thermal analysis—TGA, and evaluation of the porosity and specific surface characteristics by the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller—BET method) in order to confirm the successful synthesis of the material and to evaluate the presence of potential secondary phases. The developed material was further doped with iron oxide (HAP-Fe) using a microwave-assisted method, and both materials were evaluated in terms of photocatalytic activity determined by the photodecomposition of methylene blue (MB) which served as a contaminant model. The best results (approx. 33% MB degradation efficiency, after 120 min. of exposure) were obtained for the hydroxyapatite material, superior to the HAP-Fe composite (approx. 27%). The utilization of hydroxyapatite obtained from clam shells underscores the importance of sustainable and eco-friendly practices in materials syntheses. By repurposing waste materials from the seafood industry, we not only reduce environmental impact, but also create a valuable resource with diverse applications, contributing to advancements in both healthcare and environmental protection.

Nosocomial infections represent a major threat within healthcare systems worldwide, underscoring the critical need for materials with antimicrobial properties. This study presents the development of polyurethane foam embedded with silver nanoparticles (PUF/AgNPs) using a rapid, eco-friendly, in situ radiochemical synthesis method. The nanocomposites were characterized by UV–vis and FTIR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray technique (SEM/EDX), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), tensile and compression strengths, antimicrobial activity, and foam toxicity tests. The resulting PUF/AgNPs demonstrated prolonged stability (over 12 months) and good dispersion of AgNPs. Also, the samples presented higher levels of hardness compared to samples without AgNPs (deformation of 1682 µm for V1 vs. 4307 µm for V0, under a 5 N force), tensile and compression strength of 1.80 MPa and 0.34 Mpa, respectively. Importantly, they exhibited potent antimicrobial activity against a broad range of bacteria (including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Enterococcus faecalis) and a fungal mixture (no fungal growth on the sample surface was observed after 28 days of exposure). Furthermore, these materials were non-toxic to human keratinocytes, which kept their specific morphology after 24 h of incubation, highlighting their potential for safe use in biomedical applications. We envision promising applications for PUF/AgNPs in hospital bed mattresses and antimicrobial mats, offering a practical strategy to reduce nosocomial infections and enhance patient safety within healthcare facilities.

A cost-effective solution to the problems that the automotive industry is facing nowadays regarding regulations on emissions and fuel efficiency is to achieve weight reduction of automobile parts. Glass fiber-reinforced polymers are regularly used to manufacture various components, and some parts may also contain thermoplastic elastomers for toughness improvement. This work aimed to investigate the effect of styrene-(ethylene-co-butylene)-styrene triblock copolymer (E) and treated fly ash (C) on the morphological, thermal, and mechanical properties of long glass fiber (G)-reinforced polypropylene (PP). Results showed that the composites obtained through melt processing methods presented similar thermal stability and improved (nano)mechanical properties compared to 25–30 wt.% G-reinforced PP composites (PP-25G/PP-30G). Specifically, the impact strength and surface hardness were greatly improved. The addition of 20 wt.% E led to a 25–39% increase in impact strength and surface elasticity, while the addition of 6.5 wt.% C led to a 16% increase in surface hardness. The composite based on 25 wt.% G, 6.5 wt.% C, and 20 wt.% E presented the best-balanced properties (8–17% increase in impact strength, 38–41% increase in axial strain, and 35% increase in surface hardness) compared with PP-30G/PP-25G. Structural and morphological analysis confirmed the presence of a strong interaction between the components that make the composites. Based on these results, the PP–G–E–C composites could be presented as a viable material for automotive applications.

The present work aims to study the possibilities of developing silver nanoparticles using natural extracts of grape pomace wastes originating from the native variety of Fetească Neagră 6 Șt. This study focused on investigating the influence of grape pomace extract obtained by two different extraction methods (classical temperature extraction and microwave-assisted extraction) in the phytosynthesis process of metal nanoparticles. The total phenolic content of the extracts was assessed using the spectrophotometric method with the Folin–Ciocâlteu reagent, while the identification and quantification of specific components were conducted through high-performance liquid chromatography with a diode array detector (HPLC-DAD). The obtained nanoparticles were characterized by UV–Vis absorption spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), along with assessing their antioxidant and antimicrobial properties against Gram-positive bacteria. The data collected from the experiments indicated that the nanoparticles were formed in a relatively short period of time (96 h) and, for the experimental variant involving the use of a 1:1 ratio (v/v, grape pomace extract: silver nitrate) for the nanoparticle phytosynthesis, the smallest crystallite sizes (from X-ray diffraction—4.58 nm and 5.14 nm) as well as spherical or semispherical nanoparticles with the lowest average diameters were obtained (19.99–23 nm, from TEM analysis). The phytosynthesis process was shown to enhance the antioxidant properties (determined using the DPPH assay) and the antimicrobial potential (tested against Gram-positive strains) of the nanoparticles, as evidenced by comparing their properties with those of the parent extracts; at the same time, the nanoparticles exhibited a selectivity in action, being active against the Staphylococcus aureus strain while presenting no antimicrobial potential against the Enterococcus faecalis strain.

Hosta is a perennial plant appreciated especially for its beautiful foliage but also for the delicate flowers that decorate parks and gardens. This article presents research results performed during October 2018 - October 2020 on the influence of cultivar, species and cultivation areas on the parameters of growth and flowering for 11 varieties of Hosta (T Rex, American Halo, White Feather, Christmas Island, Fragrant Blue, Patriot, Mighty Mouse, Blue Mouse Ears, Sting, Undulata Univittata, Sunset Grooves). The elements of vegetative growth and flowering were observed. For the vegetative growth, the height of the plants, the number of shoots, the number of leaves, the length and width of the leaves and the diameter of the plants were followed. There were significant differences between the two years of vegetation for each of these elements. The T Rex and Patriot cultivars with a 100% emergence percentage in the two years of vegetation were highlighted. For the study of blooming, the percentage of flowering plants, the number of floral stems, the duration of the flowering period, the length of the floral stems and the number of flowers in the inflorescence were determined. In the first year all the varieties bloomed and the number of floral stems per plant ranged between 0.4 (Undulatta Univittata and Sunset Grooves) and 2.25 (Mighty Mouse). In the second year, eight varieties bloomed and the number of floral stems per plant was between 0.25 (Sunset Grooves) and 3.75 (Fragrant Blue). The highest number of flowers in inflorescences was recorded at Blue Mouse Ears (16.6 in the first year and 16.4 in the second year). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Background Dystocia is a common obstetric complication among nulliparous women, which requires medical intervention and carries the risk of negative maternal and neonatal outcomes. Our aim was to examine the association between body mass index (BMI) and the occurrence of dystocia. We also identified cutoffs of gestational weight gain, based on pre-pregnancy BMI, associated with the risk of dystocia. Methods This was a multicenter, retrospective, cohort study conducted in two tertiary Maternal–Fetal medicine units in Fukushima, Japan. The study population included nullipara women who delivered at either of the two units between January 1, 2013, and December 31, 2020. Women (n = 2597) were categorized into six groups (G) based on their pre-pregnancy BMI: G1 ( 30.0 kg/m2 was an independent risk factor for dystocia. For women with a pre-pregnancy BMI
