Styrian motorway crosses the Pletovarje ridge through the tunnel having the same name. It intersects the mosteastern extension of the Southern Karavanke tectonic unit. Considering geological conditions, the tunnel couldbe divided into three sections: the inner Donat / Dona~ka fault zone composed of tectonic lenses of differentlithostratigraphic units (of paleozoic, triassic and tertiary age), massive dolomite (lower triassic) and Smrekovecseries of oligocene age. Main faults have east – west direction and are subvertical.

Grain-size analysis, mineral composition of heavy and light fraction, and surface texture of quartz grains in soilsdeveloped on different parent carbonate rocks in the region of the West Karavanke Mountains and the high plateausof the Julian Alps (Mežakla, Pokljuka, Jelovica) revealed their polygenetic origin. Homogeneity of the heavymineral assemblage in the soils developed on different parent carbonate rocks indicates – besides autochthonousmaterial (insoluble residue of carbonate rocks), the presence of allochthonous (external) material in the compositionof mineral component of soils, too. Heavy mineral assemblage indicates a metamorphic-igneous source area, whichis most probably in the Central Alps. The Drava glacier transported material from there, and deposited it in tillesalong the Drava valley. They were exposed to the fluvial and eolian erosion after the Würm deglaciation. Mostly siltymaterial was transported over the ridges of the Karavanke Mountains by the northeren winds. Their deposition beganon the southern calm and protected slopes and saddles, and continued southward on high plateaus of the JulianAlps, and very possibly even farther.

The article deals with the possibility of groundwater capture by means of a groundwater drainage tunnel in the area of Krim mountain range for a supplementary water supply of the city of Ljubljana. Within the scope of the investigation, a detailed geological mapping of the area was carried out, and hydrogeological, geophysical andengineering-geological research was performed. A water balance of the recharge area was calculated, indicating considerable quantities of groundwater which could be captured with an underground drainage tunnel. A course of the tunnel was suggested, with its entrance part located on the southern fringes of Ljubljansko barje south ofthe village Strahomer. The tunnel would run in the south-west direction in the Upper Triassic dolomite. Because of low environmental burden in the recharge area of the tunnel and due to good cleaning properties of dolomite it is expected that drinking water of very good quality could be captured by means of the drainage tunnel.

The Koroška Bela alluvial fan deposits were investigated to determine the genesis of the fan and the source area of sediments. The alluvial fan is composed of a sequence of diamicton layers, and related subaeric sediments that were deposited by multiple mass flow events, in some cases certainly by debris flows. The predominant sources ofsediments are tectonically deformed clastic and partly carbonate Carbonifferous and Permian rocks. In diamictons also pebbles of other rocks from the hinterland are present. These were eroded from the channel of Bela during the mass flow events. We estimate the future debris flow hazard along Bela stream as high.

The motorway tunnel Golo rebro is situated on Styrian motorway. It intersects eastern part of Konjiška gora. From the north to the south it intersects the following rocks: paleozoicclastic rocks (inner part of the Labot/Lavanttal fault zone), slope debris with clay matrix (probabbly of tertiary or quartenary age), dolomite, dolomitized limestone and limestone,carbonate breccia and dolomite, dolomitized limestone and limestone, which are partly converted into tectonic breccia. Carbonate rocks are of middle triassic – anisian age. Rocks are strongly tectonised.

Methodology was developed for estimation of geohazard induced by mass movement processes, taking the Bovec municipality as the case study area. The geohazard map in scale 1:25.000 as the final product is aimed to be directly applicable in spatial planning of local communities (municipalities). The requirements that were followed to achieve this aim were: expert correctness, reasonable time of elaboration, and easy to read product.Elaboration of the final product comprises four consecutive phases, of which the first three are done in the office: 1) synthesis of archive data, 2) probabilistic model of geohazard induced by mass movement processes, 3) compilation of phases 1 and 2 into the final map in scale 1:25.000. As the last phase, field reconnaissance of most hazardous areas is foreseen.

Photos and short description of a large rockfall in the south rock wall of Punta Thurwieser - 3657 m - in the Ortler group are presented. They belong to the very rare authentic documents of geological events reshaping the current topography of the Alps.

Slovenia has long been known for its numerous mines and ore processing. From the times of the Roman Empire to now, 49 mines and open pits were opened, four of them were large (Idrija, Mežica – Topla, Litija and Žirovski vrh). There were also 25 oreprocessing plants and smelters, which were operating mostly in the vicinity of larger mines (Idrija, Žerjav, Celje). Due to the lack of written sources, we probably haven succeeded in making a complete list of them. There were 33 iron works operating in the vicinity ofmines and open pits, three large ones have further developed and are still operating (Jesenice, Ravne na Koroškem and Štore). As the ore processing capacities have far exceeded the capacities of the Slovenian mining, ore has long been imported and only processed in Slovenia. On the basis of the results of our investigations in the vicinity of larger mines and smelters we estimated that in Slovenia the areas in which critical limit for heavy metal content is exceeded sums up to about 80 km2.
