2. Severity and Clinical Outcomes of Pediatric Burns—A Comprehensive Analysis of Influencing Factors.

Abstract

(1) Background: Burn injuries in children present a significant public health concern due to their potential for severe physical and psychological impact. (2) Methods: This study investigates the determinants of pediatric burn severity by analyzing the interplay of demographic and environmental factors. Through a retrospective analysis of pediatric burn cases over five years, encompassing patient demographics, burn causative agents, and clinical outcomes, this research aims to identify significant predictors of burn severity. (3) Results: This study presents a comprehensive analysis of pediatric burn injuries, focusing on the severity, clinical outcomes, and multifactorial aspects influencing recovery. We reviewed 1498 pediatric burn cases from January 2015 to December 2020. The mean age of patients was 5.8 years, with a slight male predominance (54%). Scalds (45%), flame burns (30%), and contact burns (15%) were the most common burn types. Our findings indicate significant differences in burn severity based on TBSA, with 32.5% of cases having TBSA greater than 20%. Multivariate logistic regression identified rural residence, male gender, flame burns, and lower socioeconomic status as significant predictors of severe burn outcomes. The overall mortality rate was 2.5%, with higher rates among patients with TBSA greater than 40%. These results highlight the need for targeted prevention strategies and improved access to specialized burn care. 10. The Semantics and Pragmatics of an Old Romanian Expression: 'a se duce la Cucuiata'

Abstract

This paper analyses, from a semantic and pragmatic perspective, the meaning of an old Romanian phraseological unit a se duce la Cucuiata, thus providing insights into the archaic Romanian mentality and cultural patterns. Originating from the word cucui (bump), cucuiata was used to designate an elevated plot of land. The expression included, initially, a euphemistic reference to death, as archaic burial places were usually located on hills, and constituted a linguistic device mirroring the reluctance to deal with human mortality in an undeviating way. However, the connotations of the expression have changed in contemporary Romanian language, to refer to a secluded, distant place, far from civilization, often a symbol of lack of education and limited understanding of the world (pejorative meaning). To reveal the present-day uses of this word, the paper examines and interprets contexts taken from the virtual environment.

20. THE POWERFUL AND CONTROVERSIAL STRATEGY OF USING STUDENTS’ FIRST LANGUAGE KNOWLEDGE IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING

Abstract

"This study explores the extent to which using the students’ first language in teaching foreign languages is beneficial, and recommends some successful strategies of putting L1 knowledge to good use. Given that it is widely recommended to avoid the use of L1 in favour of monolingual approaches, that provide complete language immersion, it is especially challenging to define the situations when students’ first language can be used as a valuable and beneficial tool to support foreign language learning. Although L1 use is widely discouraged, some researchers suggest that, if used correctly and coherently, it does not hinder, but promotes language learning. In order to establish the extent to which L1 could support foreign language learning, this study sheds light on strategies used during teaching Romanian as a foreign language, aiming to make enlightening connections between L1 and L2, thus exploring the similarities between Romanian and Italian, the mother tongue of the students. The teacher used basic information about etymology, language history and phonetic transformations to explain the connections between words in Romanian and Italian, based on the common Latin inheritance. Moreover, the teacher used brief explanations and informal comments in Italian to build a meaningful relation with the students and create an inclusive, friendly and relaxed environment for language teaching. This comparative linguistics approach was assessed in relation with the results obtained by another class of Italian students, where the teacher made no such linguistic comparisons and avoided use of L1."

23. Efficiency of platelet‑rich plasma therapy for healing sports injuries in young athletes

Abstract

In recent years, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy has been a subject of controversy in orthopedics field. Our objective was to assess the efficiency of PRP therapy for patients who have suffered grade 2 meniscal lesions and grade 2 anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) lesions, graded by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A retrospective observational study was conducted, which included 72 young recreational athletes who had been diagnosed with grade 2 meniscal injury, graded using MRI, that benefited from PRP therapy as an enhancement of the primary treatment, after cast immobilization. The Lysholm score, the pain intensity and the resuming of the physical activity before the PRP treatment and one month after were analyzed. Our study revealed that patients had an improved subjective perception of pain after PRP therapy and an improvement of the Lysholm score. Concurrently, 83.3% of patients could return to sports and daily physical activity. It can be concluded that PRP therapy is a safe, easy to manage treatment, efficient for pain relief and in resuming of sports activities for young recreational athletes who have sustained partial meniscal or ACL tears. In terms of pain relief, it appears that the PRP therapy could be more efficient for young patients with ACL injuries.

25. Linguistic Changes and Conventions in Netspeak

Abstract

This paper presents a synthetic view on the linguistic changes that Romanian undergoes in netspeak and sheds light on the virtual environment conventions that help build meaning in cyberspace. The study goes through all linguistic layers, starting from the use of punctuation, graphical and phonetic alterations to morphosyntactic adaptations, as well as lexical and semantic trends. The pragmatics of the environment is also tackled, by presenting the most important netspeak conventions that combine text and image to generate meaning: emojis, gifs, and memes, and exploring their possible pragmatic functions, as resulted from the current state of the research in the field. The examples presented in the paper are taken from instant messaging applications.

32. Modalități de contextualizare în comunicarea mediată de calculator

Abstract

Particularitățile cyberspațiului și restricțiile temporale și spațiale pe care le presupune au dus la dezvoltarea unor modalități de contextualizare a comunicării care sunt specifice lumii virtuale. Caracterul lacunar al comunicării mediate de calculator este completat de convenții menite să redea contextul sociologic, psihologic şi lingvistic, compensând astfel lipsa limbajului nonverbal şi paraverbal și ambiguitatea situațiilor de comunicare. Aceste convenții combină mijloace de expresivitate lingvistică și imagistică și provoacă internauții să-și manifeste creativitatea, pentru a-și clarifica intențiile conversaționale. Această lucrare prezintă o perspectivă pragmatică și se concentrează pe elementele care compun contextul comunicării mediate de calculator (așa cum se manifestă aceasta în mesageria instantanee), referindu-se la modul cum sunt redefinite convențiile lingvistice, cât şi la rolul emoji-urilor, gif-urilor şi memelor în acest sens. Analiza abordează metodele de marcare a afectivităţii și mărcile pragmatice specifice comunicării mediate de calculator. În aceea ce priveşte emoji-urile, gif-urile şi memele, lucrarea evidenţiază atât forţa lor ilocuţionară, calitatea de acte de vorbire, cât şi modul cum interpretarea imaginii poate duce la renegocierea sensurilor.

34. The Multimodal Laser Treatment of Rhinophyma: clinical and psychological implications

Abstract

Background: Rhinophyma is a benign condition of the nose, characterized by its enlargement in the lower 2/3, with a bulbous appearance, purple-red tint, dilated pores and a rough surface. The treatment of choice for this pathology was based on the use of the multimodal laser, which contributed to the improvement of the patients' quality of life. Methods: the present study was conducted on a number of 6 male patients, with different levels of severity and with Fizpatrick II and III type skin. For their treatment the following were used: Cutera Xeo vascular NdYag laser, Cutero Xeo LimeLight laser, program A (vascular), Cutera Pearl Fractional laser. Results: We found that methods such as drugs, radiofrequency or dermabrasion didn’t give optimal results. Therefore, after a classification of patients with mild, moderate and severe forms, we have applied the treatment according to these 3 forms of rhinophyma, based on the principle of the “subunit method”. Our treatment has been reduced to two methods: multimodal laser treatment and surgical treatment. Conclusions: In mild and medium forms we considered sufficient multimodal laser treatment, a combination of NdYag, ErYag and intensely pulsed light, while in severe forms only surgical treatment brings optimal results. Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of two different nanoparticles TiO2 (TiO2 NPs) and ZnO2 (ZnO2 NPs) on the in vitro culture of soybean plants (cv. Felix.). The TiO2 and ZnO2 NPs concentrations used for soybean tissue culture were 10, 100 and 1000 mg/l added to MS medium which contained no plant growth regulators. After four weeks, average height of the plants, average length of the main roots, secondary roots and fresh weight of the plantlets were measured. The results show that relatively low concentrations of TiO2 NPs (10 and 100 mg/l) when added to the culture medium didn't have deleterious effects, but stimulated the growth and development of soybean plants. When higher concentrations (1000 mg/l) of TiO2 NPs were added the plant growth was inhibited. The average fresh weight of a plantlet was 2200,14±51,56 mg on the medium without TiO2 NPs and 2270,03±39,78 mg at the concentration of 100 mg/l TiO2 NPs added. At the highest concentration of TiO2 NPs added the average weight of the plant decreased significantly to 1616,86 ± 68,09 mg. The addition of ZnO2 NPs to the culture media at higher concentrations than 10 mg/l showed a clear inhibitory effect on plant growth. Therefore, our results suggest that ZnO2 NPs had a greater inhibitory effect on soybean plant growth and development than the TiO2 NPs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Zweisprachigkeit zählt in Zuwanderungsländern, wie Österreich, bereits zur Norm und sorgt für Diskussionsmaterial im Bildungssektor sowie im Bereich der Politik. Diese Arbeit hat sich das Ziel gesetzt den aktuellen Stand, die Diskrepanzen und Diskussionen rund um: Zweitspracherwerb und Zweisprachigkeit, die Rolle der Muttersprache, sowie andere Faktoren die den Zweitspracherwerb und Schulerfolg von Kindern mit Migrationshintergrund beeinflussen, darzustellen. Im ersten Teil werden theoretische Grundlagen und die wichtigsten Termini hinsichtlich des (kindlichen) Spracherwerbs aufgerollt. Der zweite Teil beinhaltet einen Forschungsbericht. Dabei wird der aktuelle Stand im ‚Streitfall Zweisprachigkeit‘ dargestellt und der Forschungsstand der Neurolinguistik skizziert, außerdem werden Aspekte die den frühen Zweitspracherwerb von Kindern mit Migrationshintergrund beeinflussen genauer betrachtet. Des weiteren finden Sprachpolitik und sprachunterrichtliche Zielsetzungen kurz Erwähnung. Der dritte Teil beinhaltet eine empirische Erhebung und hat die Aufgabe die aus der Literaturanalyse entstandenen Hypothesen, durch Befragungen betroffener Personen, zu beantworten., In immigration countries, such as Austria, bilingualism has already become the norm and has since caused controversy within the education sector and all levels of government. The purpose of this thesis is to outline the current status, the discrepancy, and the debate around: Bilingualism and second language acquisition, the role of the mother tongue, as well as other factors that influence second-language learning and success in school of children with an immigration background. The first part of this thesis introduces theoretical principles and important terms concerning (infantine) language acquisition. The second part involves a research report. This report discusses the bilingualism controversy and the state of research regarding the neurolinguistic sector. In addition, factors that have an effect on second language acquisition and school success of children with an immigration background, are looked at carefully. Moreover, politics surrounding linguistics and goal setting of language instruction are mentioned. The last part involves an empirical study. Its objective is to answer the hypotheses previously developed during the literature survey by interviewing affected people.

Abstract

Introduction. Active pharmaceutical ingredients are present in various sections of the environment, because of both the human and veterinary use of medicinal products. Ways of minimizing the risk of environmental contamination should be observed during all pharmaceutical activities (research, manufacturing, prescribing, dispensing and disposal of medicinal products). Methods. For the present study we searched specific literature on this subject, using the main international databases (Thomson Reuters - Web of Science, SCOPUS and Science Direct). Results. This narrative review focuses on the main aspects concerning environmental contamination with medicinal products. Consequently, the present study is structured on four different topics: environmental research on medicinal products, minimizing environmental contamination, waste disposal management and towards a greener community pharmacy. Conclusion. Waste management activities are important for reducing the presence of active pharmaceutical ingredients in the environment. Pharmacists should inform patients on proper pharmaceutical waste disposal and organize collection programs for unused and expired medicines, in order to develop a greener pharmacy for the future.
