1. Embedded Fiber Bragg Grating Sensors for Monitoring Temperature and Thermo-Elastic Deformations in a Carbon Fiber Optical Bench

Abstract

A composite optical bench made up of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) skin and aluminum honeycomb has been developed for the Tunable Magnetograph instrument (TuMag) for the SUNRISE III mission within the NASA Long Duration Balloon Program. This optical bench has been designed to meet lightweight and low sensitivity to thermal gradient requirements, resulting in a low Coefficient of Thermal Expansion (CTE). In addition to the flight model, a breadboard model identical to the flight one has been manufactured, including embedded fiber Bragg temperature and strain sensors. The aim of this is to explore if the use of distributed fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) can provide valuable information for strain and temperature mapping of an optical instrument on board a space mission during its operation as well as its on-ground testing. Furthermore, surface-mounted strain FBG sensors and thermocouples have been installed in the optical bench for intercomparison purposes. This paper presents the results obtained from a thermal vacuum test consisting of three thermal cycles with stabilization steps at 100 °C, 60 °C, 20 °C and −20 °C. Experimental results provide information about how FBG embedded temperature sensors can provide a proper and quick response to the temperature changes of the optical bench and that embedded FBG strain sensors are able to measure micro-deformation induced in a close-to-zero CTE optical bench.

Abstract

We present here the preliminary design of the RIZ module, one of the visible spectrographs of the ANDES instrument 1. It is a fiber-fed high-resolution, high-stability spectrograph. Its design follows the guidelines of successful predecessors such as HARPS and ESPRESSO. In this paper we present the status of the spectrograph at the preliminary design stage. The spectrograph will be a warm, vacuum-operated, thermally controlled and fiber-fed echelle spectrograph. Following the phase A design, the huge etendue of the telescope will be reformed in the instrument with a long slit made of smaller fibers. Abstract

This work presents an experimental study on the effects of gamma radiation on Long Period Fiber Gratings (LPFGs) in a low-dose test campaign to evaluate their eventual degradation. The study was carried out with standard single-mode fibers where the grating was inscribed using the Electric-Arc Discharge (EAD) technique. Before the gamma campaign, a detailed optical characterization was performed with repeatability tests to verify the accuracy of the setup and the associated error sources. The gamma-induced changes up to a dose of 200 krad and the recovery after radiation were monitored with the Dip Wavelength Shift (DWS). The results show that the gamma sensitivity for a total dose of 200 krad is 11 pm/krad and a total DWS of 2.3 nm has been observed with no linear dependence. Post-radiation study shows that recovery from radiation-induced wavelength shift is nearly complete in about 4000 h. Experimental results show that the changes suffered under gamma irradiation of these LPFGs are temporary making them a good choice as sensors in space applications.

Abstract

This work presents an optical non-contact technique to evaluate the fatigue damage state of CFRP structures measuring the irregularity factor of the surface. This factor includes information about surface topology and can be measured easily on field, by techniques such as optical perfilometers. The surface irregularity factor has been correlated with stiffness degradation, which is a well-accepted parameter for the evaluation of the fatigue damage state of composite materials. Constant amplitude fatigue loads (CAL) and realistic variable amplitude loads (VAL), representative of real in- flight conditions, have been applied to “dog bone” shaped tensile specimens. It has been shown that the measurement of the surface irregularity parameters can be applied to evaluate the damage state of a structure, and that it is independent of the type of fatigue load that has caused the damage. As a result, this measurement technique is applicable for a wide range of inspections of composite material structures, from pressurized tanks with constant amplitude loads, to variable amplitude loaded aeronautical structures such as wings and empennages, up to automotive and other industrial applications.

Abstract

We present an optical sensing methodology to estimate the fatigue damage state of structures made of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP), by measuring variations on the surface roughness. Variable amplitude loads (VAL), which represent realistic loads during aeronautical missions of fighter aircraft (FALSTAFF) have been applied to coupons until failure. Stiffness degradation and surface roughness variations have been measured during the life of the coupons obtaining a Pearson correlation of 0.75 between both variables. The data were compared with a previous study for Constant Amplitude Load (CAL) obtaining similar results. Conclusions suggest that the surface roughness measured in strategic zones is a useful technique for structural health monitoring of CFRP structures, and that it is independent of the type of load applied. Surface roughness can be measured in the field by optical techniques such as speckle, confocal perfilometers and interferometry, among others.

7. Image quality improvement through turbid media by using graphene nanoplates

Abstract

Imaging through turbid media leads to a great loss of information decreasing the image quality. This loss of quality is due to the light interaction with the medium, since part of the light will pass through it, but another part will be scattered generating a blurred image pattern. In this work we try to decrease this problem by adding an absorbent, eliminating part of the scattered radiation responsible for the turbidity. With this aim, we use graphene nanoplates as an absorbent and we also compare the experimental results with black carbon powder.

Abstract

Introduction. Understanding the origin and evolution of Phobos and Deimos is the goal of the coming Martian Moons eXploration mission (MMX) led by JAXA [1, 2, 3]. This mission will be launched in 2024 to the Martian system and return samples from Phobos. Before sample return operations, a rover of 25 kg approximately will be delivered to the surface carrying four instruments: a Raman spectrometer (RAX), a radiometer (miniRad), a stereo pair of cameras looking forwards (NavCams), and two cameras looking at the wheel-surface interface, (WheelCams) [4]. The RAX instrument. The RAman spectrometer for MMX, RAX, has been developed together by DLR, INTA/UVA, and JAXA/UTo [5]. It consists of three elements: I) The RAX Laser Assembly (RLA), which was originally designed for the RLS instrument of the ExoMars mission, and includes a laser emitting at 532 nm; II) The RAX Spectrometer Module (RSM), comprising a sophisticated confocal optical assembly and a CMOS detector that covers a spectral range of up to 4000 cm-1 with a spectral resolution of ̴ 10 cm-1; III) The Autofocus System (AFS) to measure with high precision at different positions onto the ground. RAX will in situ examine the minerals of the surface and their formation conditions at rover sampling spots. By analysing the vibrational modes of the substances, RAX will be capable to characterize the igneous phases, volatiles, organic species, and secondary alteration minerals at grain scale. RAX’s targets may be correlated, on the one hand to the orbital data to better approach the spatial distribution and stratigraphic relationship between the Phobos’ blue and red material units, and on the other hand to the mineral and rock types observed on the Mars’ surface by other Raman spectrometers to link their genesis (or not) (e.g. RLS [6], or Supercam [7]). The identified mineral assemblages can be used to determine whether Phobos is a captured asteroid rich in carbon and water, or is a remnant body of a giant impact to Mars. 9. Scientific performances evaluation of the Raman Laser (RLS) FM-instrument for Exomars mission to Mars

Abstract

The Raman Laser Spectrometer (RLS) is part of the analytical payload located inside Rosalind Franklin rover for the Exomars Mission to Mars. The RLS instrument consists of three main units: 1) the optical head that focus the laser excitation on the sample and collect the scattered light from the same area (with a 50 microns spot); 2) the spectrometer analyzing the Raman signal in the spectral range 150-3800 cm-1 with an average spectral resolution of 8 cm-1 and 3) an electronic control unit in which the laser is included. These units are connected by optical fibers and electrical hardness. The instrument will investigate powdered samples collected by the rover at the surface and subsurface of Mars at the mineral grain scale. (1) The RLS development stages comprised the development, verification, test and evaluation of the scientific performances of two main models: Engineering Qualification Model (EQM) and Flight Model (FM). Because the consecutive delays in Exomars launch to Mars an important aspect related with this situation is the evaluation of the scientific performances with time of these models comparing the results obtained at the pre-delivery stage with those obtained at the rover analytical laboratory drawer (ALD) and rover integrated stages. Additionally it is also of great interest evaluate the scientific results obtained in the framework of dedicated science activities currently ongoing at the ALD and rover levels in which the evaluation of the combined science potential among the three instruments inside Rosalind Franklin rover (MicrOmega, RLS and MOMA) is outstanding. In the present work interest is devoted to the scientific performances evaluation of the RLS-FM at the different levels: pre-delivery, rover analytical drawer (ALD) and finally integrated on the Rosalind Franklin rover. For that, observation of the data obtained on the calibration target (CT) is mainly used although data obtained on standard and natural samples at the pre-delivery stage are also presented and discussed. Instrument response as function of temperature, atmospheric pressure conditions and changes on the main acquisition parameters was evaluated. Estimation of the different band parameters observed (band position, intensity, bandwidth and SNR) allowed performances comparison along the different phases of the process and comparison with the established scientific requirements. 10. Miniature LIDAR for Mars Exploration

Abstract

The composition of the Martian atmosphere and its dust content is a key factor for understanding the climate of the Red Planet, which is of vital importance to enable future human exploration. The use of atmospheric LIDARs to characterize densities and sizes of aerosol with a height profile, is commonly used on Earth. However, Earth LIDARs are heavy and very power-demanding, which make them not easily on-boardable for planetary exploration. We propose the development of a compact LIDAR aimed at providing the most precise characterization of the suspended dust and clouds of the atmosphere of Mars to-date, while maintaining very reduced power, mass and volume envelops to facilitate its accommodation in a wide variety of landed assets. Rationale and heritage In the past years, INTA has developed four miniature radiometers for different missions: MetSIS for MetNet Lander [1], DREAMS-SIS for Schiaparelli [2], SIS’20 for Kazachok [3] and RDS for Perseverance [4]. All of them, at different levels depending on their complexity, allow the estimation of the atmospheric optical depth with high time resolution, detection of clouds and estimation of the dust concentration vertical profile. A natural step forward to complement our capabilities, especially for the dust profile and characterization of clouds, is a LIDAR. There is only one LIDAR that has already operated on Mars, on board the Phoenix mission. With a 2-wavelengths configuration at 532 and 1064 nm but without depolarization, it operated in the North Pole of Mars for 90 sols [5]. The laser pulses had a power of 30-40 kW and duration of 10 ns. Total mass was 6 kg and the power consumption 30W. A '2B+1d' LIDAR configuration is proposed here to obtain the Particle Backscatter Coefficient (PBC) at two wavelengths (2B), and the depolarization ratio at one of them (1d). They both are used to obtain three LIDAR parameters relevant for dust and cloud characterization: the particle linear depolarization ratio (PLDR), the lidar ratio (LR), and the colour ratio (CR). The intended range is set around 20 km, depending on the scenario, and depolarization measurement capability shall be incorporated. Key technologies for miniaturization The target mass and power envelop are Pulsed semiconductor laser diodes are proposed for the transmitter, instead of usual (and bulkier) diode-pumped, Q-switched solid-state lasers. This reduces the emitted energy and in turn requires higher repetition rates to improve the Signal-to-Noise ratio. Silicon Photomultipliers, also known as Multi Pixel Photon Counters, will be used as detectors. They allow lower biasing voltages than other high-gain technologies, while they show some trade-offs such as their so-called "cross talk" noise. Its performance under the applicable thermal and radiation environments must be addressed. The use of new synthesis methods to obtain very low thermal expansion coefficient (CTE) materials (crystalline β- eucryptite) to reduce the thermal requirements related to structure and alignment. To reduce the size of the optics and to mitigate the complexity of the collimation of a semiconductor laser (with large spots and emission apertures), 'free form' optics will be considered in the optical design. From the signal processing point of view, the aim is to design a receiver that autonomously adapts the measurement mode (analogue or pulse counting) and parameters (e.g., variable time intervals for pulse-counting) in real time, providing the best signal quality vs. vertical resolution compromise for each altitude. Feasibility To preliminarily assess the feasibility of this LIDAR to reach a scientifically meaningful range, we have performed several simulations of the expected signal and signal-to-noise ratio using extinction and backscattering profiles representative of different dust conditions on Mars, together with technical data extracted from the datasheets of real pre-selected parts and opto-mechanical parameters values that we consider feasible for a compact instrument as the intended one. Emitted pulses have a power of 600W and a duration of 150ns. We have simulated three different background illumination scenarios: night, twilight, and midmorning, as this is critical from the point of view of the “offset” signal it generates (that must be filtered out) and the noise associated with it. We employed worst-case (high) diffuse radiance values on Mars. Extinction and backscattering coefficients have been extracted from Phoenix LIDAR measurements [6], and background illumination values from RDS measurements in Perseverance. The conclusion is that, with adequate signal processing, we should be capable of reaching 4 km during the day, 6-7 at twilight and 15 at night, for the worst-case scenario. 20 km are feasible in better scenarios. On-going activity and next steps A breadboard prototype of the system is being built at INTA for only one channel (one wavelength; no polarization) based on pre-selected pulsed laser diode and silicon photomultiplier, with standard off-the-shelf optical parts and filters. Preliminary laboratory and outdoor measurements will be done to validate the simulations and confirm the feasibility of reaching a meaningful range with the strict miniaturization constraints. Low-temperature characterization of the emitters and detectors, as well as Displacement Damage tests to assess their robustness to the radiation environment will be done by the end of the year. The electronic design has a large heritage from previous Martian sensors as the ones mentioned above, all of them designed to operate down to -130ºC with no heating. Next steps will include thermal cycling testing of the optics and the support materials and feasibility analysis of the optomechanical frame to face such conditions. 12. MORERA: latest Earth observation system to translate big data to agriculture

Abstract

The MORERA program has recently been selected as one of the “Missions Science and Innovation” from the Spanish CDTI, an innovative program targeting solutions for deep social problems through innovation. The main Spanish industry is Agriculture (11% GDP), but this sector is threatened by climate change, as 34% of the Spanish irrigated surface is considered out of balance. Difficulty of providing useful and fully processed information to the end-users for supporting their decisions severely affect the optimization of the resources. Well informed decisions optimize resources and costs, maximizing productivity. To solve this problem, MORERA involves in a unique project the complete value chain, from sensor to user, thanks to a solid consortium, and it is based on three pillars: - Final personalized irrigation requirements that will be directly provided to the user using a mobile device. - Artificial intelligence techniques will be used to combine all relevant data to build a final watering recommendation. - A compact and highly specific freeform optical instrument will be used to estimate evapotranspiration data at farm level with required TIR bandwidth and spatial resolution. Since no present instrument fulfills these requirements, it will be developed in the framework of the project. The MORERA concept can be extrapolated to many remote sensing applications, and to take advantage of this, it has been conceived as a modular system, where each module may be adapted with minor impact. This first system is focused on providing precise irrigation and fertilization recommendations, as well as self-learning yield estimations.

Abstract

Mineralogy is the key to understanding the origin of Phobos and its position in the evolution of the Solar System. In situ Raman spectroscopy on Phobos is an important tool to achieve the scientific objectives of the Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) mission, and maximize the scientific merit of the sample return by characterizing the mineral composition and heterogeneity of the surface of Phobos. Conducting in situ Raman spectroscopy in the harsh environment of Phobos requires a very sensitive, compact, lightweight, and robust instrument that can be carried by the compact MMX rover. In this context, the Raman spectrometer for MMX (i.e., RAX) is currently under development via international collaboration between teams from Japan, Germany, and Spain. To demonstrate the capability of a compact Raman system such as RAX, we built an instrument that reproduces the optical performance of the flight model using commercial off-the-shelf parts. Using this performance model, we measured mineral samples relevant to Phobos and Mars, such as anhydrous silicates, carbonates, and hydrous minerals. Our measurements indicate that such minerals can be accurately identified using a RAX-like Raman spectrometer. We demonstrated a spectral resolution of approximately 10 cm−1, high enough to resolve the strongest olivine Raman bands at ~ 820 and ~ 850 cm−1, with highly sensitive Raman peak measurements (e.g., signal-to-noise ratios up to 100). These results strongly suggest that the RAX instrument will be capable of determining the minerals expected on the surface of Phobos, adding valuable information to address the question of the moon’s origin, heterogeneity, and circum-Mars material transport. 2021 Optical Society of America under the terms of the OSA Open Access Publishing Agreement (https://opg.optica.org/library/license_v1.cfm#VOR-OA) The aberrations generated at the image plane of an optical system that includes freeform surfaces described through Q-polynomials can be calculated using nodal aberration theory. By analyzing the definition of each Q-polynomial, they can be compared with Zernike polynomials allowing a relationship between the two bases. This relationship is neither simple nor direct, so a fitting must be made. Once established, the contribution to the aberration field map generated by each surface described through the Q-polynomial can be calculated for any surface that is not at the stop of the system. The Q-polynomials are characterized by their orthogonality in the gradient instead of the surface, which represents an opportunity to restrict the changes in the slope in a simple way and facilitate the manufacturing process. The knowledge of the field aberrations generated by each Q-polynomial allows selecting that which of them are necessary to be introduced as variables in the optimization process for an efficient optimization. 16. Fragment dissolved molecular dynamics: a systematic and efficient method to locate binding sites

Abstract

Diverse computational methods to support Fragment-based drug discovery (FBDD) are available in the literature. Despite their demonstrated efficacy to support FBDD campaigns, they exhibit some drawbacks such as protein denaturation or ligand aggregation that have not been yet clearly overcome in the framework of biomolecular simulations. In the present work, we discuss a systematic semi-automatic novel computational procedure, designed to surpass these difficulties. The method, named fragment dissolved Molecular Dynamics (fdMD) utilizes simulation boxes of solvated small fragments, adding a repulsive Lennard-Jones potential term to avoid aggregation, which can be easily used to solvate the targets of interest. This method has the advantage of solvating the target with a low number of ligands, thus preventing this way denaturation of the target, while simultaneously generating a database of ligandsolvated boxes that can be used in further studies. A number of scripts are made available to analyze the results and obtain the descriptors proposed as a means of trustfully discard spurious binding sites. To test our method, four Test cases of different complexity have been solvated with ligand boxes and four molecular dynamics runs of 200 ns length have been run for each system, which have been extended up to 1 µs when needed. The reported results point that the selected number of replicas are enough to identify the correct binding sites irrespective of the initial structure, even in the case of proteins having several close binding sites for the same ligand. We also propose a set of descriptors to analyze the results, among which, the average MMGBSA and the average KDEEP energies emerge as the most robust ones., Peer Reviewed, Postprint (author's final draft)

Abstract

This paper describes the end-to-end opto-mechanical design of the SAFARI instrument on SPICA and the analysis of the spectrometer optical performances. SAFARI instrument is a high sensitivity grating-based spectrometer operating in the 34-230 μm wavelength range. The scientific drivers lead to the implementation of two modes of operation. The Low- Resolution (LR) or nominal mode (R~300) and the High-Resolution (HR), that implies to include a Martin-Puplett Fourier Transform Spectrometer (MP-FTS) to achieve the required spectral resolution (R~2000-11000). The optical system is all-reflective and consists of three main modules. The input optics module (IOM) is an unobscured reflective Offner relay. In the IOM a Beam Steering Mirror (BSM) is included for spatial modulation and to allow efficient sky mapping. The Band and Mode Distributing Optics (BMDO) module splits the radiation band into the four different spectral bands and includes the MP-FTS. The field image existing at the output of the BMDO constitutes the entrance to the Grating Module Optics (GM). These modules provide spectral dispersion by means of linear and reflective diffraction gratings and the final image onto the detectors. Performances of the GMs are high demanding with a detector divided into 2 sub-bands with a different pixel size for each sub-band. Abstract

SPICA provided the next step in mid- and far-infrared astronomical research and was a candidate of ESA's fifth medium class Cosmic Vision mission. SAFARI is one of the spectroscopic instruments on board SPICA. The Focal Plane Unit (FPU) design and analysis represent a challenge both from the mechanical and thermal point of view, as the instrument is working at cryogenic temperatures between 4.8K and 0.05K. Being a large instrument, with a current best estimate of 148,7kg of mass, its design will have to be optimized to fit within the mission´s mass and volume budget. Abstract

Raman Laser Spectrometer (RLS) is the Pasteur Payload instrument of the ExoMars mission that will perform Raman spectroscopy for the first time in a planetary space mission. RLS main units are: SPU (SPectrometer Unit), iOH (internal Optical Head), and ICEU (Instrument Control and Excitation Unit), that includes the laser for samples excitation purposes. The iOH focuses the excitation laser into the crushed samples (located at the ALD, Analytical Laboratory Drawer, carrousel) through the excitation path, and collects the Raman emission from the sample (collection path). Its original design presented a high laser trace reaching to the SPU detector, and although a certain level was required for instrument calibration, the found level was expected to be capable of degrading the acquired spectra confounding some Raman peaks. So, the iOH optical and opto-mechanical designs were needed to be updated from the BB (Bread Board) to the engineering and qualification model (iOH EQM), in order to fix the desired amount of laser trace, and after the fabrication and the commitment of the commercial elements, the assembly and integration verification (AIV) process was carried out. Considering the results obtained during the EQM integration verification and the first functional tests, the RLS calibration target (CT) emission analysis, additional changes were found to be required for the Flight Model, FM. In this paper, the RLS iOH designs and functional tests evolutions for the different models are summarized, focusing on the iOH AIV process and emphasizing on the iOH performance evaluation (by using CT spectra) from the re-design activities., Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad. Abstract

Organic chemistry is ubiquitous in the Solar System, and both Mars and a number of icy satellites of the outer Solar System show substantial promise for having hosted or hosting life. Here, we propose a novel astrobiologically focused instrument suite that could be included as scientific payload in future missions to Mars or the icy moons: the Complex Molecules Detector, or CMOLD. CMOLD is devoted to determining different levels of prebiotic/biotic chemical and structural targets following a chemically general approach (i.e., valid for both terrestrial and nonterrestrial life), as well as their compatibility with terrestrial life. CMOLD is based on a microfluidic block that distributes a liquid suspension sample to three instruments by using complementary technologies: (1) novel microscopic techniques for identifying ultrastructures and cell-like morphologies, (2) Raman spectroscopy for detecting universal intramolecular complexity that leads to biochemical functionality, and (3) bioaffinity-based systems (including antibodies and aptamers as capture probes) for finding life-related and nonlife-related molecular structures. We highlight our current developments to make this type of instruments flight-ready for upcoming Mars missions: the Raman spectrometer included in the science payload of the ESAs Rosalind Franklin rover (Raman Laser Spectrometer instrument) to be launched in 2022, and the biomarker detector that was included as payload in the NASA Icebreaker lander mission proposal (SOLID instrument). Abstract

This paper explains two iterative phase recovery methods where the goal of each one is different. The Phase Diversity method is used to recover the wavefront aberrations in optical incoherent imaging systems when an extended object is illuminated. The purpose of the Multi-plane Phase Retrieval method is recovering the object complex field seen from the image plane, therefore the object has to be illuminated with coherent light. Both methods are simultaneously used to pick out the aberrations and free aberrations object phase. The use of both methods is proposed as a methodology for the integration of optical instruments.

Abstract

Raman Laser Spectrometer (RLS) is one of the Pasteur Payload instrument of the ExoMars 2020 mission, within the ESA’s Aurora Exploration Program. RLS is mainly composed by SPU (Spectrometer Unit), iOH (Internal Optical Head), and ICEU (Instrument Control and Excitation Unit), and will analyse Mars surface and sub-surface crushed samples by Raman spectroscopy. For the RLS Flight Model (FM) verification campaign, an end-to-end quick functional test was developed to evaluate the instrument performances stability. This test consists on a comparison of the centre pixel and the FWHM (Full Width at Half Maximum) of a set of Ne calibration lamp peaks, and was decided to be done before and after ever risky activity (transport, thermal tests, etc.) In the course of the end-to-end functional test carried out on RLS FM as part of the pre-delivery checks, an increment on the FWHM calibration lamp peaks was observed. Such performance variation was also noted to be dependent on the way the SPU thermal strap was assembled and the environmental conditions (P and T) in which the spectra were acquired. For that reason, a new SPU thermal strap assembly procedure was decided to be designed in order to ensure no extra negativeeffect was going to appear during the RLS FM installation on the ALD (Analytical Laboratory Drawer) and the instrument flight operation. In this paper, a deep exploration of the conditions in which such “de-focus” (probably due to an excessive thermal gradient between SPU structure and CCD) appears is carried out, demonstrating that the new thermal strap assembly procedure minimizes an incidental extra de-focus appearance during RLS installation on the ALD.

Abstract

The Raman Laser Spectrometer (RLS) is one of the Pasteur Payload instruments within the ESA’s ExoMars mission. The RLS instrument scientific goal consists of perform in-situ Raman spectroscopy over different organic and mineral powder samples of the Mars subsoil. It consists of three main units: SPU (Spectrometer Unit), iOH (Internal Optical Head), ICEU (Instrument Control and Excitation Unit) which are interconnected by an optical and electrical harnesses (OH and EH). The SPU is one of the most critical units of the RLS instrument. The Engineering Qualification Model (EQM) unit has been already delivered after a proper qualified campaign in a very demanding environment with very restrictive design constraints, including Planetary Protection requirements. Also, a complete set of functional tests had been carried out under representative environment, simulating not only Mars rover´s laboratory conditions (thermal range and pressure), but also the cruise phase. Previously, an exhaustive qualification campaign was developed with two different purposes: to mitigate the risks associated to new optical elements included in the design and without space heritage; and to obtain a detailed comprehension of their behaviour under Mars conditions for facing the Flight Model (FM) optical design with guarantee of success. EQM results were successful in terms of Engineering, and a SWaP-optimized system had been reached. The acquired knowledge of that model has been used to implement little improvements into SPU FM for acceptance. For operations, a big amelioration has been the reduction of the image ROI on the Charge-Coupled Device (CCD) after the improving of the alignment of the inclination degree of the image plane on CCD under the tightly integration constrains, letting to download the minimum necessary data bytes. These improvements achieved by a proper analysis of the image on the SPU CCD will allow to evaluate far better the Raman spectrum effects. SPU FM Mechanical, Thermal-Vacuum campaign has been already finished in order to accept for flight the current unit which will be already completed and “flight qualified” at RLS system level before the congress. If everything continues on this way, the desired Technology Readiness level, TRL 8 maturity level, will be reported during the following text.

espanolSe han introducido superficies freeform en el diseno de un telescopio Cassegrain de dos espejos para observacion de la Tierra. En el plano imagen de este telescopio, se colocaran 2 micro espectrometros (HAMAMATSU C12880MA) en diferentes posiciones de dicho plano. Estos micro espectrometros son pequenos y compactos dispositivos que integran la rendija de entrada, un elemento difractivo concavo y el sensor CMOS. La mision espacial requiere incluir al menos dos dispositivos en el plano focal. Aunque su tamano ha sido considerablemente reducido, sus posiciones en el plano imagen generan una restriccion en los campos que deben alejarse del eje optico. Se sabe que un campo fuera del eje optico introduce aberraciones en este tipo de telescopio, aberraciones que aumentan a medida que el campo se aleja del eje. Se introducen superficies freeform para corregir estas aberraciones, principalmente astigmatismo y coma, para los campos concretos que quedan determinados por las posiciones de los micro espectrometros. Por lo tanto, por la Teoria Nodal de Aberraciones (NAT), se introducen deformaciones en las superficies que componen el telescopio mediante un conjunto de polinomios con dependencia angular (ϕ-polynomials) y se calculan los efectos que dichas deformaciones tienen en las aberraciones totales en el plano imagen. EnglishFreeform surfaces have been introduced in the optical design of a two-mirror Cassegrain telescope for Earth observation purposes. The application requires two field positions at the image plane with minimum aberrations where two micro spectrometers (HAMAMATSU C12880MA) shall be placed. These micro spectrometers are small and compact devices that incorporate the slit, a concave diffractive element and the CMOS sensor in the same component. Although these are very small components their position at the image plane are slightly deviated from the optical axis, where it is well known minimum aberrations occurs for classical optical systems. Freeform surfaces are introduced to correct those aberrations, mainly astigmatism and coma, for the specific fields determined by the positions of the micro spectrometers. Nodal Aberration Theory (NAT) will be used to determine the mirrors surface deformation as a set of ϕ-polynomials calculating, at the same time, the effects of such deformations on the total aberrations

Abstract

FIBOS (FIber Bragg gratings for Optical Sensing) is one payload used to monitor temperature and strain during a nanosatellite mission. Description of the payload and in-orbit results are presented. Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors offer attractive and robust solutions for temperature and pressure monitoring in a spacecraft. Moreover, they can be embedded in composite structures or attached on their surface for structural health monitoring during the entire life cycle of a satellite, from integration and qualification tests, to final operation. FIBOS contains two FBGs to measure temperature and strain during one space mission called OPTOS. The mission, developed by INTA (Instituto Nacional de Técnica Aeroespacial), was a low-cost nanosatellite based on a triple configuration (3U) of the popular Cubesat standard. OPTOS was launched in November 2013 and was operative during two years. Its main goal was to validate and demonstrate the suitability of novel technologies for space applications inside a miniaturized area with big restrictions in terms of mass and power consumption. This work describes the payload components. FIBOS contains commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) parts like a monolithic tunable laser and a conventional InGaAs pigtailed photodiode. The optical sensor head includes two FBGs mounted onto a steel mechanical structure to monitor temperature and strain. Results of the mission are presented. Measurements performed during the operation in-orbit show good agreement with calibration data performed on earth inside a thermalvacuum chamber (TVC). This paper shows a demonstration of a fiber optic sensor based on FBGs in space environment. This project was totally financed with internal INTA funds. Abstract

The JEM-EUSO (Joint Experiment Missions for the Extreme Universe Space Observatory) program aims at developing Ultra-Violet (UV) fluorescence telescopes for efficient detections of Extensive Air Showers (EASs) induced by Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECRs) from satellite orbit. In order to demonstrate key technologies for JEM-EUSO, we constructed the EUSO-Balloon instrument that consists of a ∼1 m 2 refractive telescope with two Fresnel lenses and an array of multi-anode photo-multiplier tubes at the focus. Distinguishing it from the former balloon-borne experiments, EUSO-Balloon has the capabilities of single photon counting with a gate time of 2.3 µs and of imaging with a total of 2304 pixels. As a pathfinder mission, the instrument was launched for an 8 h stratospheric flight on a moonless night in August 2014 over Timmins, Canada. In this work, we analyze the count rates over ∼2.5 h intervals. The measurements are of diffuse light, e.g. of airglow emission, back-scattered from the Earth's atmosphere as well as artificial light sources. Count rates from such diffuse light are a background for EAS detections in future missions and relevant factor for the analysis of EAS events. We also obtain the geographical distribution of the count rates over a ∼780 km 2 area along the balloon trajectory. In developed areas, light sources such as the airport, mines, and factories are clearly identified. This demonstrates the correct location of signals that will be required for the EAS analysis in future missions. Although a precise determination of count rates is relevant for the existing instruments, the absolute intensity of diffuse light is deduced for the limited conditions by assuming spectra models and considering simulations of the instrument response. Abstract

In the framework of the ESA's Aurora Exploration Programme and, in particular, of the ExoMars mission, the Raman Laser Spectrometer (RLS) will be in charge of performing out planetary Raman spectroscopy for the first time. The instrument is located inside the Rover at the Analytical Drawer (ALD) and will analyze powdered samples obtained from the Martian subsurface in order to determine the geochemistry content and elemental composition of the minerals under study. After the RLS instrument successful qualification, the Flight Model (FM) development and the acceptance verification activities started. Among the different units RLS is composed on, i.e. its three main units that are interconnected by optical fibers and electrical harness, iOH (Internal Optical Head), SPU (Spectrometer Unit) and ICEU (Instrument control and Excitation Unit) which also contains the Raman excitation laser diode, iOH FM information can be found in this paper. RLS iOH unit is in charge of focusing the Raman excitation signal onto the sample, receiving the Raman signal emitted by the sample and focusing this signal in the output optical fiber that is directly connected to SPU unit. As for the rest of RLS instrument FM subunits, and before their final assembly and system level tests, RLS iOH FM exhaustive and complete characterization process was carried out, not only at room conditions but also at relevant environmental conditions: vacuum condition along the operational temperature range with acceptance margins (from -50 to 8C). In this paper, and after to carry out the RLS iOH FM proper integration and alignment process, the activities accomplished during the performance verification and the obtained results are reported on.

Abstract

SAFARI is a point source spectrometer for the SPICA mission, which provides far-infrared spectroscopy and high sensitivity. SPICA mission, having a large cold telescope cooled to 6K above absolute zero, will provide an optimum environment where instruments are limited only by the cosmic background. SAFARI is a grating-based spectrometer with two modes of operation, Low Resolution (LR), or nominal mode (R~300) and High Resolution, (HR) (R~2000-11000). The SAFARI shall provide point source spectroscopy with diffraction-limited capability in four spectral bands over 34-230μm and a field of view (FoV) on sky over 2’×2’. Due to the complexity of the optical design of the SAFARI instrument a modular design was selected. Four principal modules are defined: Calibration Module (CS), Input Optics Module (IOM), Beam and Mode Distribution (BMDO) and Grating Modules (GMs). The present work is focused in the last module. Dispersive optical systems inherently demand the need of volume allocation for the optical system, being this fact somehow proportional to the wavelength and the required resolving power. The image sampling and the size of the detector elements are key drivers in this optical modular design. The optimization process has been performed taking into account the conceptual design parameters obtained during this phase such as collimator and camera optics focal lengths, subsystem diameters and periods and AOIs of the diffraction gratings.

Abstract

JEM-EUSO (Extreme Universe Space Observatory on the Japanese Experiment Module)[1][2] is an advanced observatory that will be on-board the International Space Station (ISS) to observe the UV photon tracks produced by Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECR) with energy above 1019 eV. JEM-EUSO will detect the electromagnetic and hadronic components of the Extensive Air Showers (EAS) generated as the result of the UHECR colliding with atmospheric nuclei. Atmospheric monitoring to obtain data, us cloud coverage and cloud top altitude, is crucial for energy estimation of an extreme energy particle. Accordingly JEM-EUSO will include and Atmospheric Monitoring System (AMS)[3] to observe the Earth atmosphere continuously in the FOV of the main telescope. The AMS will comprise an InfraRed CAMera (IRCAM), a LIDAR and JEM-EUSO slow data.

Abstract

EUSO-TA is a ground-based telescope, installed at the Telescope Array (TA) site in Black Rock Mesa, Utah, USA. This is the first detector to successfully use a Fresnel lens based optical system and multi-anode photomultipliers (64 channels per tube, 2304 channels encompassing a 10.6° × 10.6° field of view) for detection of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECR). The telescope is located in front of one of the fluorescence detectors of the TA experiment. Since its installation in 2013, the detector has observed several ultra-high energy cosmic ray events and, in addition, meteors. The limiting magnitude of 5.5 on summed frames (∼ 3 ms) has been established. Measurements of the UV night sky emission in different conditions and moon phases and positions have been completed. Abstract

We present an optical sensing methodology to estimate the fatigue damage stateof structures made of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP), by measuring variations on the surface roughness. Variable amplitude loads (VAL), which represent realistic loads during aeronautical missions of fighter aircraft (FALSTAFF) have been applied to coupons until failure. Stiffness degradation and surface roughness variations have been measured during the life of the coupons obtaining a Pearson correlation of 0.75 between both variables. The data were compared with a previous study for Constant Amplitude Load (CAL) obtaining similar results. Conclusions suggest that the surface roughness measured in strategic zones is a useful technique for structural health monitoring of CFRP structures, and that it is independent of the type of load applied. Surface roughness can be measured in the field by optical techniques such as speckle, confocal perfilometers and interferometry, among others.

Abstract

AIM:Rescoring of docking-binding poses can significantly improve molecular docking results. Our aim was to evaluate postprocessing docking protocols in order to determine the most suitable methodology for the study of the binding of congeneric compounds to protein kinases. MATERIALS & METHODS:Diverse ligand-receptor poses generated after docking were submitted to different relaxation protocols. The Molecular Mechanics Poisson-Boltzmann (Generalized Born) Surface Area approach was applied for the evaluation of the binding affinity of complexes obtained. The performance of various Molecular Mechanics Poisson-Boltzmann (Generalized Born) Surface Area methodologies was compared. RESULTS:The inclusion of a postprocessing protocol after docking enhances the quality of the results, although the best methodology is system dependent. CONCLUSION:An examination of the interactions established has allowed us to suggest useful modifications for the design of new type II inhibitors., Postprint (author's final draft)

Abstract

The Polarimetric Helioseismic Imager for Solar Orbiter (SO/PHI) is an instrument on board in the Solar Orbiter mission. The Full Disk Telescope (FDT) will have the capability of providing images of the solar disk in all orbital faces with an image quality diffraction-limited. The Heat Rejection Entrance Window (HREW) is the first optical element of the instrument. Its function is to protect the instrument by filtering most of the Solar Spectrum radiation. The HREW consists of two parallel-plane plates made from Suprasil and each surface has a coating with a different function: an UV shield coating, a low pass band filter coating, a high pass band filter coating and an IR shield coating, respectively. The temperature gradient on the HREW during the mission produces a distortion of the transmitted wave-front due to the dependence of the refractive index with the temperature (thermo-optic effect) mainly. The purpose of this work is to determine the capability of the PHI/FDT refocusing system to compensate this distortion. A thermal gradient profile has been considered for each surface of the plates and a thermal-elastic analysis has been done by Finite Element Analysis to determine the deformation of the optical elements. The Optical Path Difference (OPD) between the incident and transmitted wavefronts has been calculated as a function of the ray tracing and the thermo-optic effect on the optical properties of Suprasil (at the work wavelength of PHI) by means of mathematical algorithms based on the 3D Snell Law. The resultant wavefronts have been introduced in the optical design of the FDT to evaluate the performance degradation of the image at the scientific focal plane and to estimate the capability of the PHI refocusing system for maintaining the image quality diffraction-limited. The analysis has been carried out considering two different situations: thermal gradients due to on axis attitude of the instrument and thermal gradients due to 1° off pointing attitude. The effect over the boresight at the instrument focal plane has also been analyzed. The results show that the effect of the FDT HREW thermal gradients on the FDT performance can be optically corrected. The influence of the thermal gradients on the system is also presented.

Abstract

Raman Laser Spectrometer (RLS) is the Pasteur Payload instrument of the ExoMars mission, within the ESA’s Aurora Exploration Programme, that will perform for the first time in an out planetary mission Raman spectroscopy. RLS is composed by SPU (Spectrometer Unit), iOH (Internal Optical Head), and ICEU (Instrument Control and Excitation Unit). iOH focuses the excitation laser on the samples (excitation path), and collects the Raman emission from the sample (collection path, composed on collimation system and filtering system). Its original design presented a high laser trace reaching to the detector, and although a certain level of laser trace was required for calibration purposes, the high level degrades the Signal to Noise Ratio confounding some Raman peaks. So, after the bread board campaign, some light design modifications were implemented in order to fix the desired amount of laser trace, and after the fabrication and the commitment of the commercial elements, the assembly and integration verification process was carried out. A brief description of the iOH design update for the engineering and qualification model (iOH EQM) as well as the assembly process are briefly described in this papers. In addition, the integration verification and the first functional tests, carried out with the RLS calibration target (CT), results are reported on.

Abstract

New optimized aerospace structures use composite materials for critical components and subsystems which make essential the knowledge of their fatigue properties. In the present work, the conventional methodology based on linear damage accumulation rules, applied to determine the fatigue life of structures subjected to spectral loads was evaluated for an aeronautical Carbon Fiber Reinforced Epoxy composite material. A test program has been performed to obtain the classical S-N curves at different stress ratios. Constant life diagrams, CLDs, where determined by means of Artificial Neural Networks due to the absence of consistent models for composites. A series of coupons have been tested until failure with a modified version of the standard FALSTAFF load sequence and were compared to the theoretical damage index calculated based on the conventional linear damage accumulation rule. The obtained results show non-conservative predictions.

Abstract

Designed as the first mission to explore the ultra-high energy universe from space, JEM-EUSO observes the Earth’s atmosphere at night to record the ultraviolet tracks generated by the extensive air showers. We present the expected geometrical aperture and annual exposure in the nadir and tilt modes for ultra-high energy cosmic rays observation as a function of the altitude of the International Space Station. Abstract

The athermalized panchromatic imaging system (APIS) was the low-resolution refractive camera proposed by the Laboratorio de Instrumentacion Espacial as a CubeSat payload. APIS flew on-board OPTOS CubeSat designed and developed by INTA using the methodology of European Cooperation for Space Standardization and space qualification tests. APIS had two main objectives: to analyze the performance degradation of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components due to space radiation and to verify in-flight functionality of the passive athermalization system. We summarize the design, manufacturing, and assembly integration and verification phases of the instrument, as well as the analysis of the radiation tests. Additional studies are included, such as thermal behavior, tolerances and sensitivity analysis, signal-to-noise ratio, and ghost images, as well as their implications during the design process. Three main goals were achieved during the mission lifetime: (1) the viability of a small refractive Earth observation camera on-board a CubeSat, (2) the validation for low Earth orbits of a passive athermalization system, and (3) the use of COTS elements, such as commercial glasses and detectors based on complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor technology, on a 2-year Earth observation mission.

Abstract

Ultra high energy photons and neutrinos are carriers of very important astrophysical information. They may be produced at the sites of cosmic ray acceleration or during the propagation of the cosmic rays in the intergalactic medium. In contrast to charged cosmic rays, photon and neutrino arrival directions point to the production site because they are not deflected by the magnetic fields of the Galaxy or the intergalactic medium. In this work we study the characteristics of the longitudinal development of showers initiated by photons and neutrinos at the highest energies. These studies are relevant for development of techniques for neutrino and photon identification by the JEM-EUSO telescope. In particular, we study the possibility of observing the multi-peak structure of very deep horizontal neutrino showers with JEM-EUSO. We also discuss the possibility to determine the flavor content of the incident neutrino flux by taking advantage of the different characteristics of the longitudinal profiles generated by different type of neutrinos. This is of grate importance for the study of the fundamental properties of neutrinos at the highest energies. Regarding photons, we discuss the detectability of the cosmogenic component by JEM-EUSO and also estimate the expected upper limits on the photon fraction which can be obtained from the future JEM-EUSO data for the case in which there are no photons in the samples.

Abstract

A strong knowledge of the fatigue state of highly advanced carbon fiber reinforced polymer composite (CFRP) structures is essential to predict the residual life and optimize intervals of structural inspection, repairs, and/or replacements. Current techniques are based mostly in measurement of structural loads throughout the service life by electric strain gauge sensors. These sensors are affected by extreme environmental conditions and by fatigue loads in such a way that the sensors and their systems require exhaustive maintenance throughout system life.This work is focused on providing a new technique to evaluate the fatigue state of CFRP structures by means of evaluating the surface roughness variation due to fatigue damage. The surface roughness is a property that can be measured in the field by optical techniques such as speckle and could be a useful tool for structural health monitoring. The relation between surface roughness and fatigue life has been assessed on CFRP test specimens. A tensile fatigue load with an R=0.1 (T-T) and a maximum load of 60% of the material ultimate strength has been applied. The surface roughness of the specimens has been determined from the surface topography measured by a high precision confocal microscope. Results show that the surface roughness of the specimens increases with the accumulation of fatigue cycles in such a way that the roughness could be taken into account as a fatigue damage metrics for CFRP.

Abstract

In general, peptides do not exhibit a well-defined conformational profile in solution. However, despite the experimental blurred picture associated with their structure, compelling spectroscopic evidence shows that peptides exhibit local order. The conformational profile of a peptide is the result of a balance between intramolecular interactions between different atoms of the molecule and intermolecular interactions between atoms of the molecule and the solvent. Accordingly, the conformational profile of a peptide will change upon the properties of the solvent it is soaked. To get insight into the balance between intra- and intermolecular interactions on the conformational preferences of the peptide backbone we have studied the conformational profile of the alanine dipeptide in diverse solvents using molecular dynamics as sampling technique. Solvents studied include chloroform, methanol, dimethyl sulfoxide, water and N-methylacetamide. Different treatments of the solvent have been studied in the present work including explicit solvent molecules, a generalized Born model and using the bulk dielectric constant of the solvent. The diverse calculations identify four major conformations with different populations in the diverse solvents: the C7 eq only sampled in chloroform; the C5 or extended conformation; the polyproline (PII) conformation and the right-handed a-helix conformation (aR). The results of present calculations permit to analyze how the balance between intra- and intermolecular interactions explains the populations of the diverse conformations observed., Postprint (published version)

Abstract

SpicA FAR infrared Instrument, SAFARI, is one of the instruments planned for the SPICA mission. The SPICA mission is the next great leap forward in space-based far-infrared astronomy and will study the evolution of galaxies, stars and planetary systems. SPICA will utilize a deeply cooled 2.5m-class telescope, provided by European industry, to realize zodiacal background limited performance, and high spatial resolution. The instrument SAFARI is a cryogenic grating-based point source spectrometer working in the wavelength domain 34 to 230 μm, providing spectral resolving power from 300 to at least 2000. The instrument shall provide low and high resolution spectroscopy in four spectral bands. Low Resolution mode is the native instrument mode, while the high Resolution mode is achieved by means of a Martin-Pupplet interferometer. The optical system is all-reflective and consists of three main modules; an input optics module, followed by the Band and Mode Distributing Optics and the grating Modules. The instrument utilizes Nyquist sampled filled linear arrays of very sensitive TES detectors. The work presented in this paper describes the optical design architecture and design concept compatible with the current instrument performance and volume design drivers.
