23. Spatial-Temporal Variations of Inorganic Contaminants and Associated Risks for Sediment of Felent Stream Basin Flowing Along with Silver Mines in the Midwestern Türkiye.

Abstract

The Kütahya Silver Mine, located in the Felent Stream Basin, stands as Türkiye’s silver production site. Additionally, thermal tourism facilities in the upstream region are also degrading water quality of Felent Stream. This study meticulously examined the levels and spatial-temporal variations of 18 potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in the sediments of the Felent Stream Basin and evaluated their ecotoxicological risks during dry and wet seasons. The average sediments contamination levels of PTEs were ranked as follows: Fe > Al > Zn > Mn > Sr > Pb > Ba > Ni > Cu > As > Cr > Li > V > Cd > Co > Sb > Se > Hg. Remarkably, during the wet season, sediment samples revealed an approximate threefold surge in the average concentrations of PTEs. Ecological risk assessment indicators highlighted that the basin experienced low pollution levels in the dry season, escalating to moderate pollution levels during the wet season. Non-carcinogenic risks for studied PTEs and carcinogenic risks for As remained below the threshold values in both seasons. Statistical analyses pinpointed the Yoncalı District, a prominent thermal tourism area, as the primary contributor to the sediment contamination of the Felent Stream Basin. The Enne Dam Lake, the region’s main stagnant water body, emerged as the least contaminated component, functioning as a natural filter for the basin and significantly mitigating the levels of PTEs in the sediment. Abstract

Thrace Region is a part of the Marmara Region of Türkiye. There are many natural and artificial stagnant water habitats in the region that are used for irrigation and drinking water supply. This study is intended to determine the spatial-temporal variability and probabilistic health risk of fluoride exposure in the water of stagnant water bodies in the Thrace region. A total of 33 stagnant water bodies were selected, and water samples were collected during the dry and wet seasons of 2021–2022. The fluoride levels were measured using a spectrophotometric method (wavelength is 588 nm). The fluoride accumulations varied from 0.16–0.64 mg/L for the natural lakes, 0.04–0.74 mg/L for the reservoirs, and 0.01–0.53 mg/L for the artificial ponds. The World Health Organization (WHO) suggested a level of fluoride in drinking water of 0.5 to 1.5 mg/L. The study area had a fluoride deficiency of less than 0.5 mg/L in natural water bodies during the wet season (87.87%) and the dry season (93.93%), which might be a potential threat to dental health. Estimation Daily Intake (EDI) and Hazard Quotient (HQ) widely used health risk assessment methods were applied to the data in the current research to describe the non-carcinogenic risk of fluoride. All the calculated hazard quotient (HQ) values, both in the dry and wet seasons and in all age groups, were recorded as below 1. Both teenagers and children living in the central part of the study area are at higher risk than infants and adults. To evaluate model uncertainty, Monte Carlo simulations were employed. The outcome of the sensitivity analysis revealed that the major risks to the health of the inhabitants are the high content of fluoride and their daily intake of water. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In this paper, water quality of Sehriban Stream, a rare freshwater ecosystem far from human impact and located in the western part of Türkiye's Karadeniz Region, was studied over a long period of time (a hydrological year). Multivariate statistical approaches such as Pearson Correlation Index (PCI), Factor Analysis (FA), Cluster Analysis (CA) and self-organising maps (SOM) were used to evaluate the water quality and physico-chemical datasets. Samples were taken monthly during February 2019 – January 2020 from 12 stations and a total of 21 physicochemical parameters were investigated. The spatiotemporal averages of some organic pollution parameters investigated in the basin were determined as follows: 344 μS/cm for EC, 0.80 mg/L for COD, 0.42 mg/L for BOD, 0.02 mg/L for PO42-, 34.4 mg/L for SO42-, 0.00009 mg/L for NO2, 1.36 mg/L for NO3 and 0.0002 mg/L for NH4−. According to the findings of this study, despite a modest decline in water quality from upstream to downstream, Sehriban Stream was revealed to have first-class water quality features in general and all parameters detected in all seasons at all the investigated stations were below the limit values reported by WHO. The SOM analysis detected three spatial patterns, e.g. pH-salinity-K+-PO42--Mg2+-NO2; DO-Ca2+-NH4− and TDS-EC-Cl−-SO42--COD-BOD-Na+ in water. As a result of PCI, significant positive and negative correlations were recorded among the investigated parameters. Results of FA showed that 2 factors elucidated 85% of total variances, which are named 'Agricultural Factor' and 'Natural Factor'. As a result of CA, 3 significant clusters were identified, which are named 'Lower Polluted Zone', 'Moderate Polluted Zone' and 'Higher Polluted Zone'. Overall, this work showed that multi-statistical approaches can be used to assess the water quality in a rare, unpolluted habitat over time and space. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Bu çalışmada, İpsala İlçesi’ne bağlı köylerin içme suyu kalitesi ve köylerde, yerel halk tarafından kullanılan yalak ve çeşmelerin su kalitesi, bazı limnolojik parametreler araştırılarak tespit edilmiştir. Ayrıca, Su Kalite İndeksi (WQI) ve Faktör Analizi (FA) kullanılarak elde edilen veriler değerlendirilmiştir. Bu amaç için, İpsala İlçesinden ve bağlı köylerden, 2020 yılı kış (yağışlı) ve yaz (kurak) mevsimlerinde, toplam 45 istasyondan içme suyu ve yeraltı suyu örnekleri toplanmıştır. Su numunelerinde sıcaklık, çözünmüş oksijen (ÇO), oksijen doygunluğu, pH, elektriksel iletkenlik (EC), toplam çözünmüş katı (TDS), askıda katı madde (AKM), tuzluluk, bulanıklık, nitrat (NO3), nitrat azotu (NO3-N) nitrit (NO2), nitrit azotu (NO2-N), fosfat (PO4) ve fosfor pentaoksit (P2O5) olmak üzere toplam 15 su kalite parametresi tespit edilmiştir. Elde edilen verilerin daha etkili bir şekilde değerlendirilebilmesi için, Su Kalite İndeksi (WQI), Faktör Analizi (FA) ve Pearson Korelasyon İndeksi (PCI) gibi ekosistem kalitesi değerlendirme çalımlarında yaygın olarak kullanılan bazı indeks ve istatistiki metotlar kullanılmıştır. Çalışmamız sonucunda, İpsala İlçesi ve bağlı köyleri içme ve yeraltı sularındaki azotlu ve fosforlu bileşiklerin oldukça yüksek olmasına rağmen, genel olarak tespit edilen WQI değerlerinin içme suyu sınırını aşmadığı kaydedilmiştir. In this study, the drinking water quality of the villages of İpsala District and the water quality of the troughs and fountains used by the local people in the villages were determined by investigating some limnological parameters. Also, the data obtained were evaluated by using Water Quality Index (WQI) and Factor Analysis (FA). For this pur-pose, drinking and groundwater samples were collected from a total of 45 stations in the winter (rainy) and summer (dry) seasons of 2020 from İpsala District and its villages. A total of 15 water quality parameters including temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), oxy-gen saturation, pH, electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS), suspended solids (SS), salinity, turbidity, nitrate (NO3), nitrate nitrogen (NO3-N) in water samples ) nitrite (NO2), nitrite nitrogen (NO2-N), phosphate (PO4) and phosphorus pentaoxide (P2O5), were determined in water samples. In order to evaluate the obtained data more effectively, some indexes and statistical methods commonly used in ecosystem quality assessment studies such as Water Quality Index (WQI), Factor Analysis (FA) and Pearson Correlation Index (PCI) were used. As a result of our study, it was noted that although the nitrogenous and phosphorous compounds in the drinking and groundwaters of İpsala District and its villages are quite high, the WQI values generally determined do not exceed the drinking water limit.

Abstract

Amaç: Çalışmamızda Edirne’nin 3 ilçesinde içme sularındaki fluor seviyeleri belirlenerek bölgede yaşayan çocuklarda dental fluorozis ve diş çürüğü görülme sıklığı değerlendirilmiştir. Gereç ve Yöntem: Edirne ilinde, Kuzey Havsa, Süloğlu ve Lalapaşa ilçe merkezleri ve köylerinden içme suyu örnekleri toplanmıştır. İçme sularındaki fluor miktarları iyon spesifik F elektrodu (Orion 960900 Fluoride Combination Electrode, Thermo Scientific) kullanılarak ölçülmüştür. Bu bölgedeki çocuklarda diş çürükleri DMFT/dft indeksi kullanılarak dental fluorozis ise Thylstrup-Fejerskov (TF) indeksi kullanılarak incelenmiştir. Abstract

Felent Çayı, Porsuk Çayı'nın en önemli kollarından biridir ve Kütahya'nın sanayi, tarım ve kaplıca kaynaklı atıklarından etkilenmektedir. Bu çalışmada, sistemin yukarı, aşağı ve rezervuar kısımlarını içeren Felent Çayı'nın su kalitesi araştırılmıştır. Bu amaçla, havzada kirlilik kaynaklarını değerlendirilerek seçilen yedi istasyondan mevsimsel olarak alınan su örnekleri tıplanmış ve bu numunelerde sıcaklık, pH, çözünmüş oksijen, amonyum azotu, nitrit azotu, nitrat azotu, sülfat, fosfat, kimyasal oksijen ihtiyacı (KOİ), toplam fosfor, kalsiyum, magnezyum ve sodyum parametreleri belirlenmiştir. Ayrıca, araştırılan istasyonlar arasındaki önemli su kalitesi farklılıklarını değerlendirmek için tespit edilen verilere Tek Yönlü ANOVA testi uygulanmıştır. Tespit edilen verilere göre, Felent Çayı'nın, özellikle Kütahya İli evsel atıklarından ve Yoncalı Köyü kaplıcalarından kaynaklanan önemli bir organik - termal kirliliğin etkisi altında olduğu tespit edilmiştir, Felent Stream is one of the most important branches of Porsuk Stream and it is affected by wastes of industrial, agricultural and thermal springs of Kütahya Province. In the present study, water quality of Felent Stream including upstream, downstream and reservoir parts of the system were investigated. For this purpose, temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, ammonium nitrogen, nitrite nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, sulphate, phosphate, chemical oxygen demand (COD), total phosphorus, calcium, magnesium and sodium parameters were determined on water samples collected seasonally (2010 – 2011) from seven stations selected on the basin considering the pollution sources. Also One –Way ANOVA test was applied to detected data in order to evaluate the significant water quality differences among the investigated stations. According to data observed, Felent Stream was found to be as under effect of a significant organic – thermal pollution caused form especially domestic wastes of Kütahya Province and thermal springs of Yoncalı Village

Abstract

Meriç Plain, with wide land and water resources, is known as “Agriculture Land” and one of the most important agricultural regions of Turkey. This region is the largest rice cultivation area of Turkey and makes great contributions to rice production. In this study, social and economic structures of rice producers living in İpsala, Karpuzlu and Meriç regions were investigated by using some systematic data collection techniques and also a socio – economic assessment was suggested for the region according to the data. Geniş arazi ve su kaynaklarına sahip olan Meriç Ovası, "Tarım Arazisi" olarak bilinir ve Türkiye'nin en önemli tarım bölgelerinden biri olarak kabul edilir. Bu bölge Türkiye'nin en büyük pirinç tarımı alanını oluşturmaktadır ve pirinç üretimine büyük katkı sağlamaktadır. Bu çalışmada, İpsala, Karpuzlu ve Meriç bölgelerinde yaşayan pirinç üreticilerinin sosyal ve ekonomik yapıları sistematik veri toplama teknikleri kullanılarak araştırılmış ve elde edilen verilere göre bölge için bir sosyo-ekonomik değerlendirme önerilmiştir.
