Abstract

The latest achievements in the fabrication of black phosphorus thin layers, towards the technological breakthrough of a phosphorene atomically thin layer, are paving the way for a their employment in electronics, optics, and optoelectronics. In this work, we have simulated the optical properties of one-dimensional photonic structures, i.e. photonic crystals and microcavities, in which few-layer black phosphorus is one of the components. The insertion of the 5 nm black phosphorous layers leads to a photonic band gap in the photonic crystals and a cavity mode in the microcavity interesting for light manipulation and emission enhancement., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Heterostructures of single- and few-layer black phosphorus (2D bP) functionalized with gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) have been recently reported in the literature, exploiting their intriguing properties and biocompatibility for catalytic, therapeutical and diagnostic applications. However, a deeper insight on the structural and electronic properties at the interface of the 2D bP/Au NP heterostructure is still lacking. In this work, 2D bP is functionalized with Au nanoparticles (NPs) through in situ deposition-precipitation heterogeneous reaction. The smallest realized Au NPs have a diameter around 10 nm as revealed by atomic-force and scanning electron microscopy, and are partially positively charged as revealed by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). XPS, UV-vis and Raman spectroscopy, supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, confirmed that while the structural and electronic properties of 2D bP are overall preserved, a soft-pairing between P atoms at the surface of 2D bP and Au atoms at the surface of Au NPs occurs, leading to a partial charge transfer at the 2D bP/Au interface, with a positive charge being localized on the Au atoms directly bonded to 2D bP. DFT calculations also predicted a band gap lowering, by 0.8 eV, for phosphorene functionalized with a tetranuclear Au cluster. Larger effects are expected as the Au cluster nuclearity (and coverage) increases.

Abstract

The smart integration of multiple devices in a single functional unit is boosting the advent of compact optical sensors for on-site analysis. Nevertheless, the development of miniaturized and cost-effective plasmonic sensors is hampered by the strict angular constraints of the detection scheme, which are fulfilled through bulky optical components. Here, an ultracompact system for plasmonic-sensing is demonstrated by the smart integration of an organic light-emitting transistor (OLET), an organic photodiode (OPD), and a nanostructured plasmonic grating (NPG). The potential of OLETs, as planar multielectrode devices with inherent micrometer-wide emission areas, offers the pioneer incorporation of an OPD onto the source electrode to obtain a monolithic photonic module endowed with light-emitting and light-detection characteristics at unprecedented lateral proximity of them. This approach enables the exploitation of the angle-dependent sensing of the NPG in a miniaturized system based on low-cost components, in which a reflective detection is enabled by the elegant fabrication of the NPG onto the encapsulation glass of the photonic module. The most effective layout of integration is unraveled by an advanced simulation tool, which allows obtaining an optics-less plasmonic system able to perform a quantitative detection up to 10-2 RIU at a sensor size as low as 0.1 cm3.

Abstract

As fabrication and positioning of micro- and nanocrystals grow in importance in a wide range technological applications, there is an increasing requirement for the development of a shared technological platform that is able to process materials from solutions on large areas. Here, the application of lithographically controlled wetting (LCW) for the manipulation and positioning of single crystals directly on devices is reported. In the LCW, a stamp, consisting of a metallic grid, is positioned in contact with a liquid thin film spread on a substrate; under these conditions, the capillary forces pin the solution to the stamp protrusions, thus splitting the continuous film in separated droplets or channels. As the solvent evaporates and the solution reaches the saturation, the solute precipitates onto the substrate within the menisci, giving rise to a structured thin film, in correspondence of the protrusion of the stamp. The possibility to achieve a patterning of crystals of conjugated molecules with a defined shape and with controlled size directly on device is demonstrated and pattern of crystals are investigated using polarized optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction; they are also electrically characterized. The application of lithographically controlled wetting on the manipulation and positioning of single crystals directly on devices. It is demonstrated that it is possible to achieve patterning of crystals of conjugated molecules with a defined shape and with controlled size directly on a device.

Abstract

Astroglial ion channels and calcium signaling play a central role in the physiology and pathophysiology of the Central Nervous System. In this context, increasing efforts are needed to generate innovative tools for monitoring astrocytes biochemical or bioelectrical activity in vitro and in vivo. Organic field effect devices have a great potential for generating advanced biomedical tools to enable real-time recording and manipulation of communication signals between neural cells. 1,2,3 We previously reported on transparent Organic Cell Stimulating and Sensing Transistors (O-CSTs) that provide bidirectional stimulation and recording of primary neurons.1,2 The transparency of the device also allows the optical imaging of the modulation of the astroglial Ca2+ signaling bioelectrical activity.4,5 Here we explore O-CST functionality to stimulate, evoke and control astroglial Ca2+ signaling and whole cell conductance in primary cultured astrocytes. We found that primary astroglial cells can adhere, grow and differentiate on the perylene based field-effect transistor. Furthermore, the organic material preserves astrocytes electrophysiological properties. By means of patch-clamp analyses, we explore the effect of the stimulation on the whole-cell conductance of patched astrocytes. We found that the stimulation lead to an exclusive increase in the inward current that could be prevented by the application of Ruthenium Red and RN-1734 prior to stimulation. This finding suggests a contribution of the transient receptor potential (TRP) channels, of which TRPV-4 has been shown in former studies to mediate Ca2+ influx in astrocytes. We show, that the provided O-CST evokes intracellular astrocytic Ca2+ response, which can be determined by calcium imaging. The evoked signal was blocked by Gadolininium(III)-chloride and Ruthenium red, thus underpinning the involvement of TRPV channels. By using Ca2+-free bath saline, we show that the response is due to an influx of external Ca2+. We also explored the cellular volume changes and cell viability after stimulation. Our organic cell stimulating and sensing transistor paves the way to a new generation of devices for stimulation, manipulation and recording of astroglial cells' bioelectrical activity in vitro. Abstract

There is a demand of technologies targeted to provide ad- vance in electrophysiological knowledge on neurons and astrocytes, that might help in understanding brain func- tion/disfunction. In this context, promising opportunities are offered by exploitation of combined functionalities of or- ganic semiconductors films such as softness, optical trans- parency, optoelctronic properties and iono/electronic con- ductivity, in innovative device platform. Recently, by whole- cell patch-clamp recording, extracellular recording, calcium imaging and confocal microscopy investigations, we provide consolidated evidence that, Organic-Cell stimulating and Sensing Transistor architecture (O-CST), based on perylene derivative organic semiconductor, is enabling bidirectional communication with primary neurons with high signal-to- noise ratio. O-CST operation can also stimulate sustained intracellular calcium signalling and whole-cell inward con- ductance in primary astrocytes. The biophysics and phar- macology of astroglial ion channels, underpinning the O-CST evoked response is provided. The perspective offered by com- bination of 2D/3D organic biofunctional interface with or- ganic bioelectronic and light emitting device is discussed un- derlining the potential of the emerging field of organic neuro- optoelectronics.

Organic light-emitting transistors (OLETs) are multifunctional optoelectronic devices that hold great promise for a variety of applications, including flat panel displays, integrated light sources for sensing and optical communication systems. The narrow illumination area within the device channel is considered intrinsic to the device architecture and is a severe technological drawback for all those applications where a controlled, wide and homogeneous emission area is required. Here it is shown that not only the position but also the extension of the emission area is voltage-tunable, and the entire channel of the transistor can be homogeneously illuminated. The modeling of the exciton distribution within the channel at the different bias conditions coupled to the modeling of the device emission profile highlights that excitons are spread through the entire channel width and across the bulk of the central emission layer of the p-channel/emitter/n-channel trilayer active heterostructure. Abstract

CUORE will be an observatory for rare events consisting of a tightly packed array of TeO2 bolometers, with a total mass of similar to 740 kg, operating in the underground Gran Sasso laboratory. A first step towards CUORE is CUORICINO, a running experiment with 40.7 kg of TeO2. Present results from CUORICINO for the neutrinoless double beta decay of Te-130 will be presented here (T-1/2(0 nu) >= 1.0x10(24) y, < m(nu)> <= 0.26-1.4 eV at 90% C.L.). The status of CUORE preparation and its physics potential, including dark matter searches, will be shown.

Abstract

CUORICINO is a bolometric experiment on Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay (DBDOv) of 130Te. It consists of an array of 62 Te02 crystals with a total mass of - 40.7 kg. While being a self consistent experiment CUORICINO is also a good test for the feasibility of the next generation experiment CUORE, -750 kg of Te02 bolometric mass. In this paper last results from CUORICINO and prospects for the future CUORE experiment will be reported.
