Abstract

This document collects the proceedings of the "Parton Radiation and Fragmentation from LHC to FCC-ee" workshop (http://indico.cern.ch/e/ee\_jets16) held at CERN in Nov. 2016. The writeup reviews the latest theoretical and experimental developments on parton radiation and parton-hadron fragmentation studies --including analyses of LEP, B-factories, and LHC data-- with a focus on the future perspectives reacheable in $e^+e^-$ measurements at the Future Circular Collider (FCC-ee), with multi-ab$^{-1}$ integrated luminosities yielding 10$^{12}$ and 10$^{8}$ jets from Z and W bosons decays as well as 10$^5$ gluon jets from Higgs boson decays. The main topics discussed are: (i) parton radiation and parton-to-hadron fragmentation functions (splitting functions at NNLO, small-$z$ NNLL resummations, global FF fits including Monte Carlo (MC) and neural-network analyses of the latest Belle/BaBar high-precision data, parton shower MC generators), (ii) jet properties (quark-gluon discrimination, $e^+e^-$ event shapes and multi-jet rates at NNLO+N$^{n}$LL, jet broadening and angularities, jet substructure at small-radius, jet charge determination, $e^+e^-$ jet reconstruction algorithms), (iii) heavy-quark jets (dead cone effect, charm-bottom separation, gluon-to-$b\bar{b}$ splitting), and (iv) non-perturbative QCD phenomena (colour reconnection, baryon and strangeness production, Bose-Einstein and Fermi-Dirac final-state correlations, colour string dynamics: spin effects, helix hadronization)., Comment: 181 pages, 120 figures. Abstract

Previous studies of the physics potential of LEP2 indicated that with the design luminosity of 500 inverse picobarn one may get a direct measurement of the mass of the W-boson with a precision in the range 30 - 50 MeV. This report presents an updated evaluation of the estimated error on the mass of the W-boson based on recent simulation work and improved theoretical input. Abstract

Cobalt supported on mesostructured TiO2 catalysts has been prepared by a wet-impregnation method. The Co/TiO2 catalytic system showed better catalytic performance after support calcination at 380 °C. Co nanoparticles appeared well distributed along the mesopore channels of TiO2. After reduction pretreatment and reaction, a drastic structural change leads to mesopore structure collapse and the dispersion of the Co nanoparticles on the external surface. Along this complex process, Co species first form discrete nanoparticles inside the pore and then diffuse out as the pore collapses. Through this confinement, a strong metal-support interaction effect is hindered, and highly stable metal active sites lead to better performance for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis reaction toward C5+ products.

13. Catalytic combustion of methane over Ni modified Pd/Al2O3 catalysts

Abstract

Methane is a major Greenhouse Gas (GHG) that accounts for 14% of the world’s total amount of GHG emissions, originating mainly from agriculture, coal mines, land fields, wastewater and oil and gas facilities [1]. The European Commission presented the so-called Green Deal in December 2019, also known as the Green Pact, which is a set of policies aimed at making Europe climate neutral by 2050. The plan is to reduce greenhouse gas production at least by 50% compared to 1990 levels, as well as zero pollution by 2050, whether soil, air, or water pollution. Neutralization of the methane emissions can be done by different methods, one of them being the complete catalytic oxidation. Methane combustion is achieved by using of noble metal loaded oxide catalysts, palladium being known to offer a high catalytic activity. However, its deactivation at high temperatures requires the development of new catalysts or improvement of Pd (PdO) dispersion on catalytically active supports such as pre-modified alumina, hexaaluminates etc. An alternative for stabilization of support and catalytic active phase could be found in the introduction of oxides to the existing catalytic systems [2,3]. According the authors in [4] the hydrothermal stability of Pd-based catalysts in methane combustion has been significantly improved by addition of the Ni. Such excellent catalytic performance has been related to the stabilizing effect of the support due to the least lattice mismatch between NiAl2O4 and Pd, which contributes to the high Pd dispersion. The Pd-based catalysts modified by nickel were prepared by sequential impregnation of Al2O3 with aqueous solutions of Ni(NO3)2.6H2O and Pd(NO3)22H2O. The Pd was introduced on Al2O3 after impregnation with Ni and next calcination. The palladium content on the surface of all prepared samples was approximately 0.2 wt%. Characterization techniques as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), BET, TPR, TEM and EPR have been used to investigate the surface structure and bulk composition of mono and bimetallic nickel and palladium catalysts. Catalytic activity tests were performed using 750 ppm methane.The specific surface area decreases with increasing nickel content, which is probably due to the partial pore blockage of the Al2O3. XRD pattern of the synthesized catalysts show the presence of two phases namely γ-Al2O3 and Al2NiO4. The last one has also been confirmed by HRTEM and SAED analyses. SAED patterns demonstrate the presence of Pd and PdO as well. Diffraction lines for Pd and PdO are not observed in the XRD patterns of studied samples revealing finely divided phases. The reduction behaviour of the synthesized catalysts was investigated by means of TPR. Several reduction maxima were observed: at 70°C, 330°C, 420°C and above 500°C. The hydrogen consumption at 70°C is attributed to the reduction of PdO. Two high-temperature peaks (at 330°C and 420°C) are observed in the TPR profiles of all samples. They are less intense in the catalysts with low nickel content. The peak with a maximum at 330 °C in the TPR spectrum is most likely due to the reduction of finely divided NiO particles and this at 420°C, for the reduction of bulk of NiO. H2 consumption above 500 °C is due to mixed Ni-Al oxide phases. An intensive negative peak at 77°C in the TPR profile of all catalysts is ascribed to the decomposition of β-palladium hydride. The reduction of highly dispersed PdO to metal Pd can take place even below room temperature and this metal absorbs hydrogen, leading to the formation of the hydride phase, which decomposes at about 70°C. The chemical state of Pd and Ni and the percentage of the different oxidation states of these elements on the catalytic surfaces were studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. All three oxidation states Pd0, Pd2+ and Pd4+ are established for palladium. The presence also of paramagnetic palladium species (Pd+ or Pd3+) are suggested from EPR investigation. The doublet Ni2p XPS spectra and peak binding energy values propose that nickel is mainly present as Ni2+ on the sample surface. According to the EPR data part of Ni2+ ions are located in partly dehydrated Al(OH)3. The formation of orthorhombic Ni+ species and Ni+ species in axial symmetry has been also suggested. The catalytic activity of the nickel modified samples is higher than that of the monometallic palladium one. The most active sample is that containing 10% Ni and the least active is that with 0.5% Ni loading. The difference in T50 between them is only 5 °C, which indicates that the high nickel content is not appropriate because it does not lead to a significant increase in catalytic activity. Abstract

Nowadays, the major air pollutants are the volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Usually, their origin is connected with the industrial processes. One of the most promising technologies of the VOCs removal at low concentration in industrial gaseous effluent is the catalytic combustion. Several types of catalysts, such as supported noble metals or transition metal oxides are used in practice. Within the transition metal oxide catalysts, cobalt containing catalysts are reported to exhibit efficient catalytic performance during the oxidation of VOCs. Regarding the dispersion of the active component on the surface, the supporting material plays an important role. It is well know that zeolites possess an appropriate pore structures, acidic properties, good thermal stability and ion exchange properties. Among them, metal modified ZSM-5 was intensively investigated for catalytic combustion of different VOCs [1-3]. In the present study the Co-ZSM-5 catalysts with different Si/Al ratio were studied. The obtained materials were characterized by N2- physisorption, XRD, XPS, TPO and TPR methods. The N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms show that all studied samples contain both micropores and mesopores. No cobalt oxide lines were observed for some studied catalysts, thus indicating for the fine dispersion of Co3O4. XPS data show that Co2+ predominate on the surface. According to the TPR investigations the formation of different cobalt oxide species wеre observed. The existence of surface adsorbed peroxy O2- (ad) species, surface adsorbed O-(ad) species and surface lattice oxygen O2- (ad/lattice) were suggested based of data from TPO. The catalysts performance has been evaluated by tests on combustion of ethane, butane and hexane. It was observed that the Co-ZSM-5 catalysts with ratio Si/Al=23 and Si/Al=40 present the best catalytic performance. More detailed attention has been paid to the reaction kinetics and mechanism of hexane complete oxidation. Based on the observed reaction orders established by power – law kinetics, the following mechanistic models were selected for consideration: Mars−van Krevelen, Langmuir−Hinshelwood and Eley−Rideal.It was concluded that the high catalytic activity of cobalt modified zeolites can be explained by the high reducibility, result of lower interaction of the cobalt oxide with the supports. The observed insignificant changes in the zeolite structure, morphology, oxide particle size and oxide phases after reaction reveal that the zeolite structure can prevents the agglomeration of the oxide particles, thus giving new opportunities for development of stable catalyst for decreasing of VOCs gas emissions. Abstract

In recent years, the attention of scientists has focused on the use of zeolites as catalysts supports due to their thermal and acid stability and moisture resistance. They have high specific surface area which is a prerequisite for the creation of active catalytic systems. One of the best adsorbents and supports for catalytic systems used for the degradation of VOCs are zeolite aluminosilicates, thanks to their adjustable surface properties, their controllable hydrophobicity and the ability to deposit metals and metal oxides. The starting ZSM-5 materials with different Si/Al were used for the present study. Cobalt was incorporated from Co(CH3OO)2.4H2O by incipient wetness impregnation technique followed by drying and calcination in air 2 h at 450 ºC. The obtained materials were characterized by XRD, N2 adsorption-desorption, TPR, TPO and XPS. The formation of different cobalt oxide species would be suggested from TPR data: extra framework Co3O4; CoO strongly interacting with zeolite framework and framework cobalt or some other types of cobalt silicate. XPS data show that Co2+ predominate on the surface. The catalysts performance has been evaluated by tests on combustion of propane. In order to extend further the analysis of the different behaviour of the studied catalyst samples, an investigation on the kinetics and mechanism of the reaction has been carried out. The kinetic parameters were calculated by applying the method, consisting of a direct integration of the reaction rate based on data from light-off curves. As a first step a power law kinetic model has been fitted to the experimental data. In order to account for the inhibiting effect of the water vapour (both produced by the reaction or additionally added to the gas feed), the mechanistic models are modified, thus containing an additional term in the denominator, in order to take into account, the adsorption of water. Based on the values of the observed reaction orders, established by power – law kinetics model, the following mechanistic models are proposed for checking their consistence with the obtained experimental results: Mars−van Krevelen, water molecules compete with the propane molecules for the oxidized and reduced adsorption sites; effect of slow desorption of the products is included; Langmuir−Hinshelwood, adsorption of propane and oxygen on different types of sites, dissociative adsorption of oxygen, water molecules compete with the methane and oxygen molecules for the corresponding type of adsorption sites; Eley−Rideal mechanism, propane molecules are impinging directly from gas phase, water molecules compete with the oxygen molecules for one and the same type of adsorption sites. It was concluded that the high catalytic activity of cobalt modified zeolites is explained by the high reducibility as result of lower interaction of the cobalt oxide withthe supports. The observed insignificant changes in the zeolite structure, morphology, oxide particle size and oxide phases after reaction reveal that the zeolite structure can prevents the agglomeration of the oxide particles, thus giving new opportunities for development of stable catalyst for prevention of greenhouse gas emissions.

Abstract

The European Commission presented the so-called Green Deal in December 2019, also known as the Green Pact, which is a set of policies aimed at making Europe climate neutral by 2050. The design of a catalytic system for complete oxidation of hydrocarbons is an important problem of the environmental catalysis. Cobalt oxide is reported as quite promising among the metal oxides used for preparation of supported catalysts for the removal of VOC’s. The main drawback of the transition metal oxides catalysts is the deactivation as result of an aggregation. The problem could be tackled by application of supports with new properties, as those of nanostructured porous oxides. Zeolites are one such type of carrier because of their specific pore structure, acidic properties, high thermal stability and the ability to exchange ion. Another type of supports that science is increasingly interested in is mesoporous oxides such as SBA-15. This work is focused on the investigation of the structural and catalytic properties of mono component cobalt catalysts supported on SBA-15 and ZSM-5 (Si/Al=50). Cobalt was incorporated from Co(NO3)2.4H2O by incipient wetness impregnation technique followed by drying and calcination. The obtained materials were characterized by XRD, N2 adsorption-desorption, TPR, TPO and XPS and tested in complete oxidation of n-hexane and butane. The formation of different cobalt oxide species would be suggested from TPR data: extra framework Co3O4; CoO strongly interacting with zeolite framework and framework cobalt or some other types of cobalt silicate. XPS dates show that Co2+ predominate on the surface. Co-SBA-15 demonstrates oxide phases difficult for reduction. Higher activity in bought reaction is shown by the samples supported on ZSM-5, probably due to the presence of easily reducible phases.

Abstract

Cerium has high oxygen storage capacity, associated with fast Ce4+/Ce3+ redox process, making more oxygen available for the oxidation process. Mesoporous silica materials have attracted much attention because of their large surface area, uniform pore-size distribution, large pore size, and wide potential applications in the fields of separation, adsorption, and catalysis. Among the different types of mesoporous silicas, SBA-15 has attracted much interest because of its thicker pore walls and higher hydrothermal stability. This work is focused on the investigation of the structural and catalytic properties of series of mono component manganese and bi-component Mn-Ce catalysts supported on SBA-15.Single component (Mn) and bi-component Mn-Ce samples with different Mn:Ce ratio were prepared on SBA-15 according to the ‘‘two-solvent’’ technique. The obtained materials were characterized by SAXS, N2 adsorption-desorption, XRD, SEM and TEM microscopy, XPS, H2-TPR, propane-TPR and O2-TPD. The catalytic properties were tested in the complete oxidation of n-hexane, toluene and propane. The modification of SBA-15 with Mn leads to the decrease of the specific BET surface area, pore volume and modification of the adsorption-desorption curve shape. This might be due to the partial pore blocking by Mn or Mn-Ce particles which is confirmed by ТЕM images revealing the location of Mn and Ce clusters inside the channels of SBA-15. According to the XRD data the formation of MnO2 (pyrolusite) and Mn2O3 (bixbyite) is visible from the XRD patterns for a single component Mn catalyst supported on the SBA-15. No crystalline phase detected in the case of bi-component Mn-Ce on SBA-15, owing to high dispersion of the manganese and cerium oxides. This could be explained as a result of mixed Mn-Ce oxide formation, which is confirmed by EDX-TEM analysis. The predominant species on the surface of all catalyst is Mn3+.The highest activity of the mono-component manganese sample in all studied reaction is explained by its higher reducibility as a result of lower interaction of the manganese oxide with the SBA-15. The fine dispersion of manganese and cerium oxide and their strong interaction in the channels of the SBA-15 molecular sieve, leads to the formation of difficult-to-reduce oxide phases and, consequently, to lower catalytic activitycompared to nanocomponent manganese oxide catalyst. The mesoporous structure can prevent the agglomeration of the oxide particles, thus leading to the successful development of a new and stable catalyst for decreasing greenhouse gas emissions. Abstract

A simplified computational scheme for "deposition" of a metallic (Pd) monolayer on semi-ionic supports is considered. An arbitrary selection of the initial position of the deposited layer relative to the surface of the support cannot provide the best solution for an optimal atom–atom binding. The energy and/or geometry changes were checked relative to a slide of the mono- and bilayers in parallel to the support layer and re-optimization. Two types of possible consequences are shown at the slide length of 1–3 Å for γ-Al2O3(110), monoclinic ZrO2(001) (or m-ZrO2), and rutile TiO2(001) (or TiO2 below). First consequence option: either the Pd monolayer completely collapses after the shift/optimization, or it yields a new geometry (at γ-Al2O3(110) and m-ZrO2) at different steps. Second consequence option: the shift leads to a loss of the Pd stabilization while the ordered monolayer's geometry is retained (at TiO2 and m-ZrO2). The extent of such destabilization varies depending on the strength of the interaction with the support. It is thus recommended to verify Pd stabilization energy by sliding/optimizing the monolayer along one or two monolayer directions in order to avoid its energy underestimation. The activity of such monolayers for modelling catalysis is demonstrated using H2O dissociation in the Pd monolayer/rutile system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
