This work demonstrates a method to design photonic surfaces by combining femtosecond laser processing with the inverse design capabilities of tandem neural networks that directly link laser fabrication parameters to their resulting textured substrate optical properties. High throughput fabrication and characterization platforms are developed that generate a dataset comprising 35280 unique microtextured surfaces on stainless steel with corresponding measured spectral emissivities. The trained model utilizes the nonlinear one-to-many mapping between spectral emissivity and laser parameters. Consequently, it generates predominantly novel designs, which reproduce the full range of spectral emissivities (average root-mean-squared-error < 2.5%) using only a compact region of laser parameter space 25 times smaller than what is represented in the training data. Finally, the inverse design model is experimentally validated on a thermophotovoltaic emitter design application. By synergizing laser-matter interactions with neural network capabilities, the approach offers insights into accelerating the discovery of photonic surfaces, advancing energy harvesting technologies.

Abstract Objective: The average age of patients with vulvar squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) has been reported to have declined. Human papilloma virus (HPV)-related lesions have been shown to be associated with the expression of the immunohistochemical (IHC) marker p16. Non-HPV-related tumors have been characterized by p53 abnormal expression and PDL1 expression. We aimed to evaluate the correlation between these markers and vulvar SCC and to relate it to the clinical and pathological characteristics. Methods: Histopathologic assessments and IHC analyses of p16, p53, and PDL1 were performed in 41 samples of vulvar SCC collected between 2016 and 2021. The data were correlated with clinical and pathological characteristics of the patients. Results: The mean age of the patients was 72.1 years. Positive p16 and PDL1 staining was detected in 24.4% and 17.1% of the samples, respectively. p53 expression was negative in 19.5% of the samples, whereas it was overexpressed in 24.4%. p16-positive tumors showed a smaller depth of invasion (DOI) (p = 0.014), while tumors with p53 abnormal expression showed greater DOI (p = 0.041). PDL1 expression was correlated with increased number of inflammatory cells (p = 0.055). In addition, lesions with lymphovascular space invasion were p16-negative. Conclusion: In our sample, regarding to the SCC incidence the patients’ mean age did not change. The expression of p16 was inversely correlated with p53 results. Tumors with p53 abnormal expression and absence of p16 showed a greater DOI. Our data suggest an association between PDL1 expression and increased inflammatory infiltrates in vulvar SCC.

Objetivos: Validar los efectos de la fotobiomodulacion con el uso de cluster de LEDs rojo (660nm) e infrarrojo (850nm) sobre el dolor y la amplitud de los movimientos cervicales y mandibulares en pacientes con DTM. Métodos: Ensayo clínico, randomizado, controlado y ciego. Con un n= 28 de ambos sexos, edades que varían desde los 18 a 45 años. Dividido en 2 grupos: Grupo 1 LED cluster rojo e infrarrojo, Grupo 2 placebo. Fueron sometidos a 6 sesiones no consecutivas por 2 semanas. DC/TMD fueron utilizados para determinar la presencia o no de DTM. Para validar la amplitud de movimento mandibular (ADM), fue utilizado un paquímetro y para ADM cervical un flexímetro. El dolor fue validado por medio de la escala visual analógica-EVA. Todos los participantes fueron validados antes de la primera intervención terapéutica y nuevamente al final, siguiendo los mismos procedimentos utilizados inicialmente. Resultados: Prevalencia femenina para ambos grupos. Presento diferencia significativa la escala de dolor y la inclinación cervical izquierda después del tratamiento con LED y . Apertura bucal, flexión, extensión e inclinación cervical derecha no presentaron diferencias significativas. Conclusiones: La FBM utilizada demostró una mejora significativa del dolor aplicado sobre la musculatura masticatoria y cervical. No en tanto, fueron encontradas diferencias significativas en relación a la amplitud del movimiento de apertura bucal y movimiento de la columna cervical en el grupo que recibió tratamiento.

IntroductionThis study comprehensively compared laparoscopic liver resection (LLR) to open liver resection (OLR) in treating colorectal cancer liver metastasis (CRLM).MethodsA systematic review of relevant literature was conducted to assess a range of crucial surgical and oncological outcomes.ResultsFindings indicate that minimally invasive surgery (MIS) did not significantly prolong the duration of surgery compared to open liver resection and notably demonstrated lower blood transfusion rates and reduced intraoperative blood loss. While some studies favored MIS for its lower complication rates, others did not establish a statistically significant difference. One study identified a lower post-operative mortality rate in the MIS group. Furthermore, MIS consistently correlated with shorter hospital stays, indicative of expedited post-operative recovery. Concerning oncological outcomes, while certain meta-analyses reported a lower rate of cancer recurrence in the MIS group, others found no significant disparity. Overall survival and disease-free survival remained comparable between the MIS and open liver resection groups.ConclusionThe analysis emphasizes the potential advantages of LLR in terms of surgical outcomes and aligns with existing literature findings in this field.Systematic review registration[website], identifier [registration number].

Abstract Objective Ictal central apnea (ICA) is a frequent correlate of focal seizures, particularly in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), and regarded as a potential electroclinical biomarker of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP). Aims of this study are to investigate morphometric changes of subcortical structures in ICA patients and to find neuroimaging biomarkers of ICA in patients with focal epilepsy. Methods We prospectively recruited focal epilepsy patients with recorded seizures during a video‐EEG long‐term monitoring with cardiorespiratory polygraphic recordings from April 2020 to September 2022. Participants were accordingly subdivided into two groups: patients with focal seizures with ICA (ICA) and without (noICA). A pool of 30 controls matched by age and sex was collected. All the participants underwent MRI scans with volumetric high‐resolution T1‐weighted images. Post‐processing analyses included a whole‐brain VBM analysis and segmentation algorithms performed with FreeSurfer. Results Forty‐six patients were recruited (aged 15–60 years): 16 ICA and 30 noICA. The whole‐brain VBM analysis showed an increased gray matter volume of the amygdala ipsilateral to the epileptogenic zone (EZ) in the ICA group compared to the noICA patients. Amygdala sub‐segmentation analysis revealed an increased volume of the whole amygdala, ipsilateral to the EZ compared to controls [F(1, 76) = 5.383, pFDR = 0.042] and to noICA patients ([F(1, 76) = 5.383, pFDR = 0.038], specifically of the basolateral complex (respectively F(1, 76) = 6.160, pFDR = 0.037; F(1, 76) = 5.121, pFDR = 0.034). Interpretation Our findings, while confirming the key role of the amygdala in participating in ictal respiratory modifications, suggest that structural modifications of the amygdala and its subnuclei may be valuable morphological biomarkers of ICA.

Abstract Despite evidence about the contribution of Indigenous Peoples and local communities (IPLCs) to conservation, prevailing strategies still seek their separation from nature, often triggering conflicts. Current pledges to expand global protected area coverage suggest a need for the critical analysis of governance quality and the way conservation interacts with the well‐being of IPLCs. We present the case of Catimbau National Park in the Caatinga dry forest of northeast Brazil, where we explored connections between the well‐being of IPLCs and landscape through different values, practices and institutions, and perceptions of how environmentally just the park's governance has been. The well‐being of IPLCs is inextricably connected with the Caatinga landscape, through multiple place‐based relational values that, although differing between Indigenous and non‐indigenous inhabitants, have in both cases developed over generations. Although often framed as degraders, IPLCs exhibit a strong motivation to conserve, reflected through local institutions including forest gardens, sustainable use regulations, restoration activities and prevention of external encroachment. The strict form of protected area implemented at Catimbau, instead of a locally led or sustainable use reserve, explicitly targeted the resettlement of IPLCs and livelihood reorientation. These imposed objectives have clashed with a way of life in this peopled landscape and precluded local stewardship on a larger scale. Long‐term conflict arose through governance deficiencies which sparked multidimensional injustices. These include not only the misrecognition of local values and customary institutions but also the lack of procedures for consent or decision‐making influence, plus distributional harms including tenure insecurity and denied development assistance. Development and conservation strategies must reject narratives about poor, resource‐dependent rural communities and embrace the opportunities that local knowledge and institutions bring for effective conservation. As conservation efforts are expanded post‐2020, the people of the Caatinga and beyond must be recognised as embedded and a key part of any solution. In strict protected areas like Catimbau, where social conflict constrains their ability to function, seeking legal changes in governance type can be onerous. However, we describe other local‐level actions to build relationships and agency that may foster transitions towards better governance, and just treatment of IPLCs. A deep learning strategy was exploited to learn and predict the deformation of stiffeners, 3D printed onto a pre-stretched soft membrane. The working process reads as follows: the membrane is stretched until a pre-defined level; a specific geometry of stiffeners is printed onto it; the membrane is finally released, and due to the presence of the printed stiffeners, the system undergoes an out-of-plane deformation due to buckling. Fused deposition modeling was specifically calibrated to print PLA (Polylactic acid or polylactide) on a Lycra fabric. To assess how the printed pattern affects the buckled configuration, samples featuring different dimensions and in-plane geometries of the stiffeners were printed and numerically modeled via finite elements (FEs). The calibrated model was next exploited to construct a larger training dataset of stiffener geometries. A pre-trained You Only Look Once (YOLO)-based digital model was finally trained to foresee the link between the in-plane dimensions of the stiffeners before the release and the out-of-plane displacements in the buckled configuration. By handling around 100 different patterns, a precision of 93% in terms of recognition of the in-plane dimensions of the stiffeners and a mean absolute percentage error of 5% at most in terms of an estimate of the features of the buckled configuration were attained. The reported results testify the capability of the proposed approach and its potential efficiency to optimize the shape of the 3D printed geometries.
