In this study, tocopherol‐derived ionizable lipids were synthesized to create functional lipid nanoparticles for mRNA delivery. Tocopherol succinate is considered a biocompatible material because it has anti‐cancer effects and degrades into vitamin E in the body. Two types of new ionizable tocopherol derivative lipids (DMT and AIT) were synthesized by introducing ionizable functional groups. The synthesized tocopherol lipids were used to make lipid nanoparticles with helper lipid, cholesterol, and PEG‐DMG. The DMT LNP showed high mRNA encapsulation efficiency. Using HeLa cell lines, it was confirmed that gene transfection efficiency was increased approximately 2‐fold in DMT LNP‐treated cells compared to that of MC3 LNP. The two types of tocopherol derivative lipids exhibited high cell viability of over 90%, confirming very low levels of toxicity. The results of this study confirmed that lipid nanoparticles using newly developed ionizable tocopherol derivatives have potential as biocompatible and effective mRNA delivery vehicles. The physicochemical composition of the oil extracted from three different melon seed varieties (named Uzbek-Russian, Soski, and Soski Green), which were collected from three various geographical parts of Iran (north, northeast, and center), was determined in 2021 and 2022. The macronutrient components, fatty acid profile, sterol compounds, phenolic compounds, tocopherols, and oxidative stability of the melon seed oils were determined. The oil content of melon seeds ranged from 43.3% to 47.3%. Linoleic (54.48% to 60.35%), oleic (24.35% to 28.03%), and palmitic acids (10.15% to 12.65%) were the predominant fatty acids. No significant differences were observed between the three cultivars and between the 2 years of the study in terms of macronutrient components and fatty acid profiles (p > 0.05). Twelve different phenolic compounds were identified, of which caffeic acid was the major compound, ranging from 39.74% ± 1.70% (Soski Green) to 63.45% ± 1.25% (Uzbek-Russian). The amounts of caffeic acid and oxidative stability of Uzbek‐Russian were significantly higher than those in the two other cultivars. β‐Sitosterol (approximately 60%) and γ‐tocopherol (71.6 to 84.07 mg/100 g) were the major sterol and tocopherol compounds, respectively. The results indicated that the physical and chemical specifications of the three investigated melon seed oils were stable for two consecutive years. Retinaldehyde (RAL), or retinal, is a vitamin A derivative that is widely used for several skin conditions. However, it is light sensitive and has low water solubility, limiting its efficiency in transdermal delivery. This study developed a novel delivery system for retinal (RAL) using flexible liposomes (FLPs) infused with α-tocopherol succinate (α-TS) to improve stability, and enhance skin permeability. The RAL-FLPs were embedded in pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) hydrogels, creating a delivery platform that supports prolonged skin residence and efficient permeation of RAL. The stability and skin permeation as well as human skin irritation and adhesion capabilities were assessed to determine the formulation's safety and efficacy. Our findings suggested that the addition of α-TS could improve liposomal stability and RAL chemical stability. Moreover, the skin permeation and fluorescence microscopic-based studies suggested that the addition of α-TS could enhance skin permeability of RAL through hair follicles. The RAL-FLP was embedded in PSA hydrogels fabricated from 25% GantrezTM S-97 (GT) and 1% hyaluronic acid (Hya) with aluminum as a crosslinker. The PSA hydrogel exhibited desirable peeling and tacking strengths. The developed hydrogels also demonstrated greater skin deposition of RAL compared with its aqueous formulation. Additionally, the RAL-FLP-embedded PSA hydrogels showed no skin irritation and maintained better adhesion for up to 24 h compared to commercial patches. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the most prevalent ocular disease in the elderly, resulting in blindness. Oxidative stress plays a role in retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) pathology observed in AMD. Tocopherols are potent antioxidants that prevent cellular oxidative damage and have been shown to upregulate the expression of cellular antioxidant proteins. Here, we determined whether oxidative stress and tocopherols, using either normal cellular conditions or conditions of sublethal cellular oxidative stress, alter the expression of proteins mediating sterol uptake, transport, and metabolism. Human telomerase transcriptase-overexpressing RPE cells (hTERT-RPE) were used to identify differential expression of proteins resulting from treatments. We utilized a proteomics strategy to identify protein expression changes in treated cells. After the identification and organization of data, we divided the identified proteins into groups related to biological function: cellular sterol uptake, sterol transport and sterol metabolism. Exposure of cells to conditions of oxidative stress and exposure to tocopherols led to similar protein expression changes within these three groups, suggesting that α-tocopherol (αT) and γ-tocopherol (γT) can regulate the expression of sterol uptake, transport and metabolic proteins in RPE cells. These data suggest that proteins involved in sterol transport and metabolism may be important for RPE adaptation to oxidative stress, and these proteins represent potential therapeutic targets. Background and Objectives: The significance of periodontal disease as a public health issue prompts the exploration of effective treatments, including the potential use of tocopherol (Vitamin E) due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Materials and Methods: The PICO statement (Population, Intervention, Comparator, Outcome) was as follows: In patients with periodontal disease, does tocopherol (Vitamin E) supplementation compared to no supplementation or insufficient Vitamin E intake improve clinical outcomes such as gingival inflammation, pocket depth, and clinical attachment levels? This study searched through PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science up to June 2024 focused on studies involving human subjects with various forms of periodontal disease, analyzing the impact of tocopherol through dietary or supplementary intake. Primary outcomes evaluated included improvements in gingival inflammation, pocket depth, and clinical attachment levels, with data synthesis conducted according to PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines. Quality assessment and risk of bias were meticulously performed for the included observational studies and randomized controlled trials. Results: The meta-analysis incorporated 8 studies that were used for data extraction, totaling 12,832 patients, revealing a heterogeneous response to tocopherol supplementation, with a pooled odds ratio for efficacy in reducing periodontal disease severity at about 0.97 (95% CI: 0.96–0.98). Noteworthy findings indicated a statistically significant increase in clinical attachment loss and pocket depth with odds ratios ranging from 1.15 to 9.33 when Vitamin E was insufficient. However, the considerable heterogeneity (I2 = 88.35%) underscores variations in tocopherol's effectiveness across different populations and study designs. Conclusions: While tocopherol supplementation shows a modest benefit in managing periodontal disease, particularly in reducing clinical attachment levels and pocket depth, the variability in outcomes emphasizes the necessity for more research to establish standardized treatment protocols and dosages. Hemp seed oil (HSO) is an edible oil low in saturated fat and rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) such as omega‐6 and omega‐3 fatty acids. When they are in contact with oxygen in the air, PUFAs are easily oxidized even at room temperature due to the multiple double bonds that facilitate the formation of reactive radicals when exposed to air. This study aimed to evaluate the oxidation of HSO under different conditions and to examine the encapsulation of HSO with zein as a new method to prevent its oxidation. Peak time of weight gain monitored with thermogravimetric analysis and oxidation products detected with high‐performance liquid chromatography were used to determine the oxidation of fatty acids and HSO. It was found that the thermal decomposition of fatty acids prevailed over autoxidation beyond a certain temperature (at about 100–140°C). Encapsulating HSO into zein microcapsules, which isolates oil droplets from contact with oxygen in the air, effectively prevented its oxidation. The induction period of HSO oxidation was delayed by 7.3–9.3 times with the zein‐to‐HSO ratio of 0.5–1.25. In contrast, 0.5% (w/w) α‐tocopherol could prolong the induction period up to 2.5 times indicating that the encapsulation method was much more effective than α‐tocopherol in preventing the oxidation of HSO. This method may also be applied for other oils susceptible to oxidation such as omega‐3 oils. Practical Application: This research compares the effects of three schemes that stabilize hemp seed oil from oxidation: (1) lowering temperature to slow down the oxidation reaction, (2) adding antioxidant to deactivate the initiation of oxidation reaction, and (3) encapsulating oil droplets into protein microcapsules to keep the oil from contact with oxygen. The experimental result showed the encapsulation of oils in protein microcapsules is more effective than the other two. Cancer is a disease resulting from uncontrolled cell division, which significantly contributes to human mortality rates. An alternative approach to cancer treatment, such as cancer immunotherapy, is needed as the existing chemotherapy and radiotherapy approaches target the cancer cells and healthy dividing cells. Vitamin E is a plant‐derived lipid‐soluble antioxidant with numerous health‐promoting benefits, including anticancer and immunomodulatory properties. Vitamin E comprises eight natural isoforms: tocopherols (α, β, δ, and γ) and tocotrienols (α, β, δ, and γ). While initial research focused on the anticancer properties of α‐tocopherol, there is growing interest in other natural forms and modified synthetic analogues of vitamin E due to their unique properties and enhanced anticancer effects. Hence, this review is aimed at outlining the effect of vitamin E and its analogues at various steps of the cancer‐immunity cycle that can be used to stimulate anticancer immune responses. Planar catechin (PCat), a natural antioxidant with a fixed 3D catechin structure on a plane, exhibits radical-scavenging activity approximately five times stronger than the conventional catechin. We synthesized a compound, PCat-TrOH, by binding Trolox (TrOH), an α-tocopherol analog, to PCat to enhance its antioxidant effect against oxidative stress, such as lipid peroxidation. TrOH shows radical-scavenging activity about 6.5 times greater than PCat, and PCat-TrOH exhibited a similar level of radical-scavenging activity to TrOH. Additionally, PCat-TrOH demonstrated twice the radical-scavenging activity against reactive oxygen species compared to PCat or TrOH. This compound is also expected to exhibit an excellent antioxidant effect against lipid peroxidation caused by radical chain reactions, through interactions with vitamin C, similar to that in the case of α-tocopherol. The primary causes of sperm quality decline during the freeze-thaw pathway are the peroxidation hazard caused by reactive oxygen species produced by the biological molecules of sperm. Alpha-tocopherol (Vitamin E) and ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) are two potent antioxidants that operate to prevent oxidation processes. The objective of this study was to analyze the effects of α-tocopherol and ascorbic acid on the motility, viability, abnormality, and plasma membrane quality of post-thawed Tropical Brahman bull sperm. Sperm samples were obtained and pooled from eight sexually mature Tropical Brahman Bull, separated into seven equal proportions, and diluted with TEY extender Semen was supplemented with 0 (C0;E0), 5 (C5;E5), 10 (C10;E10), and 15 (C15;E15) mg/mL of each a-tocopherol and ascorbic acid, respectively. Total sperm motility, viability, abnormalities, and semen membrane plasma were analyzed after thawing (%). C5 and E15 extenders resulted in higher total motility (p 0.05) than the other extenders, with the exception of C10 and C15, which were lower than that of the control. The extender E15 (P <0.05) exhibited the highest motility. Furthermore, compared with the other extenders, the C5 and E15 extenders led to better vitality and membrane plasma in post-thawed spermatozoa (p 0.05). Finally, compared with the other extenders, abnormalities were lower in the C5-and E10 extenders (p<0.05). Our study investigated how different levels of antioxidants and contrasting proportions of native legumes in the diet affect lamb meat quality. Twenty-four male Texel lambs were randomly assigned to three groups: two groups on a natural pasture in southern Brazil (Pampa Biome), each at a different proportion of legumes: Low-legume (LL, 4.37%) and High-legume (HL, 14.01%); the other group was stall-fed (Control) to achieve the same growth rates as the grazing groups. Cold carcass yield from the Control lambs was higher than HL. The meat from pasture-fed animals had a higher deposition of muscle α-tocopherol and lower lipid oxidation (TBARS values) after 9 days of storage. LL lambs had higher subcutaneous fat thickness, which promoted better sensory quality of the meat, as assessed by a trained panel. Pasture-based diets enhanced odd- and branched-chain fatty acids (OBCFAs), trans vaccenic acid, and total conjugated linoleic acids (CLAs), while decreasing elaidic acid. Despite the lower ∆9-desaturase activity, the higher proportion of Desmodium incanum (condensed tannin-rich native legume) in the HL diet did not impact meat nutritional quality. Finishing lambs on the Pampa Biome grasslands is an option for improving the oxidative stability and beneficial fatty acid content of lamb meat, which improves product quality and human consumer health. This study investigated whether pre-treating sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) seeds with a combination of acid-soaking and microwave-heating could significantly enhance the quality of the resulting sesame oil, particularly by increasing its content of functional compounds such as lignans, tocopherol, phytosterol, and squalene. The study revealed that soaking the sesame seeds in a solution of HCl and citric acid, along with microwave-heating, significantly increased the content of these compounds. The detected ranges were sesamin (1365–6927 µg g−1), sesamolin (605–3493 µg g−1), tocopherol (69.31–282.76 µg g−1), asarinin (ND–383.52 µg g−1), sesamol (ND–49.59 µg g−1), phytosterol (3690–6201 µg g−1), and squalene (532−1628 µg g−1). Additionally, the study found that the pre-treatment of sesame seeds had a minimal effect on the fatty acid composition, antioxidant activity (92.94–95.08% DPPH scavenging activity), and oxidative stability (2.13–2.90 mg MDA kg−1 oil). This is the first study to demonstrate that using acid-soaking and microwave-heating to prepare sesame seeds can produce sesame oil enriched with functional compounds, potentially benefiting cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and health applications. Currently, breast cancer is the most common cause of mortality caused by neoplasia in women worldwide. The unmet challenges of conventional cancer therapy are chemoresistance and lack of selectivity, which can lead to serious side effects in patients; therefore, new treatments based on natural compounds that serve as adjuvants in breast cancer therapy are urgently needed. Tocopherols are naturally occurring antioxidant compounds that have shown antitumor activity against several types of cancer, including breast cancer. This review summarizes the antitumoral activity of tocopherols, such as the antiproliferative, apoptotic, anti-invasive, and antioxidant effects of tocopherols, through different molecular mechanisms. According to the studies described, α-T, δ-T and γ-T are the most studied in breast tumor cells; however, α-T and γ-T show a more critical antitumor activity and significant potential as a complements to chemotherapeutic drugs against breast cancer, enhancing toxicity against tumor cells and preventing cytotoxicity in nontumor cells. However, the possible relationship between tocopherol intake, related to concentration, and the promotion of cancer in particular cases should not be ruled out, so additional studies are required to determine the correct dose to obtain the desired antitumor effect. Moreover, nanomicelles of D-α-tocopherol have promising potential as pharmaceutical excipients for drug delivery to improve the cytotoxicity and selectivity of first-line chemotherapeutics against breast cancer. The aim was to apply a cassava starch/carboxymethyl cellulose blend-based edible coating added to a tocopherol mix to Brazil nuts and evaluate oxidative levels during storage. The edible coatings were prepared from a cassava starch/carboxymethyl cellulose blend and identified as control B (no soy lecithin and no tocopherol mix), L (with soy lecithin and no tocopherol mix), and LT and LT2 (with soy lecithin and tocopherol mix). In the forming solutions of the coatings, stability, viscosity, pH, and color were analyzed. The Brazil nuts were immersed in the solutions for 30 s, dried at 45 °C, and placed in an incubator at 25 °C. At 1, 7, 15, 30, 45, 60, 90, and 120 days of storage, mass loss, the browning index, conjugated dienes and trienes, the oxidative state by official methods, and the accelerated oxidation index were evaluated. The blend-forming solutions B, L, LT, and LT2 showed non-Newtonian and pseudoplastic behavior, excellent resistance to flow, and stability. The diene, triene, iodine value, peroxide value, p-anisidine value, and total oxidation indices showed that the application of the cassava starch/carboxymethyl cellulose blend-based edible coating added tocopherol mix, LT, and LT2 preserved the Brazil nuts up to 90 days of storage at 25 °C. PCA shows that all coatings applied to Brazil nuts promoted oil preservation in some evaluation periods, especially those added with a tocopherol mix. Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a severe side effect of antiresorptive drugs – Bisphosphonates (BPs) and RANKL inhibitor (denosumab) – prescribed for treatment of bone malignancies and severe osteoporosis. Non-surgical treatment may be a valid option for MRONJ in patients ineligible for surgery. Published observational studies have demonstrated that a common purine derivative – pentoxifylline in combination with tocopherol are potentially useful in the nonsurgical management of MRONJ. The aim of this study was to assess the therapeutic impact and possible side effects of treatment with pentoxifylline in combination with tocopherol in patients with MRONJ. Patients were subdivided into two groups: the test group, comprising of 20 patients, underwent treatment with 800 mg pentoxifylline in combination with 1000 IU of tocopherol, whereas the other patients formed the control group. After the 6-month treatment course, the statistically significant results of our study show that treatment with pentoxifylline in association with tocopherol is efficacious for managing MRONJ nonsurgically. However, larger clinical studies are needed to optimize dose and duration. No serious adverse effects occurred.

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin with several forms. Among these, α-tocopherol (TOC) is preferentially absorbed and accumulated in humans. In the body, it acts as an antioxidant, helping to protect cells from the damage caused by free radicals. It is an organic chemical compound that undergoes degradation upon irradiation with UV light. To protect this bioactive chemical compound from UV light degradation, encapsulation was carried out using zein as a shell material. Due to the unique phase diagram of TOC in aqueous ethanol, the encapsulation efficiency was >99%. The size of encapsulated particles was ~300 nm or smaller, and the thickness of the shell wall was ~30 nm. The presented procedure offers the most simple and efficient encapsulation process that yields edible products. The investigation of the irradiation effect of UV on TOC revealed that the encapsulation effectively blocks UV light and prevents TOC from being degraded. Summary: In the present study, the effect of microwave roasting on the total phenolic quantities, antioxidant activities, phenolic constituents, fatty acids and tocopherol amounts of the pistachio kernel and oil was revealed. The moisture, oil, total phenolic amounts and antioxidant capacity value of raw and roasted pistachio nuts were assessed as 31.13%, 28.58%, 34.79 mgGAE/100 g and 0.75%–3.18%, 56.91%, 18.80 mgGAE/100 g and 2.26%, respectively. The raw pistachio nut contains 1.90 gallic acid, 0.22 3,4‐dihydroxybenzoic acid, 0.87 (+)‐catechin, 0.15 1,2‐dihydroxybenzene, 0.15 rutin trihydrate, 0.16 resveratrol, 0.1 quercetin, 0.19 kaempferol and 0.24 mg/100 g isorhamnetin. In addition, microwave‐roasted nuts contained 0.75 gallic acid, 0.62 3,4‐dihydroxybenzoic acid, 0.83 (+)‐catechin, 0.47 1,2‐dihydroxybenzene, 0.21 syringic acid, 0.17 caffeic acid and 0.17 mg/100 g quercetin. The raw and roasted pistachio nut oils contained 74.12% and 71.16% oleic, 13.76% and 15.23% linoleic, 8.16% and 8.92% palmitic and 2.09% and 2.10% stearic acids, respectively. The oil samples of the raw and roasted kernels contained 8.15 and 0.00 α‐tocopherol, 63.78 and 7.60 β‐tocopherol, 8.72 and 7.40 ɣ‐tocopherol and 5.61 and 6.77 mg g−1 δ‐tocopherols, respectively. The total phenolic quantity of the pistachio kernel roasted by microwave decreased significantly. Phenolic compounds of the pistachio kernel showed partial differences depending on microwave heating. Differences were monitored in the fatty acid profiles of Pistachio kernel oils. β‐tocopherol quantity of the oil of the pistachio kernel heated by microwave significantly decreased. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a second most common neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the selective and progressive degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in substantia nigra pars compacta. Rotenone is a neurotoxin which selectively degenerate dopaminergic neurons in striatum, leading to cause PD like symptoms. Rotenone was administered at a dose of 1.5 mg/kg, i.p. from day 1 to day 40. Treatment with doxycycline (50 and 100 mg/kg, p.o), tocopherol (5 mg and 10 mg/kg, p.o) alone, doxycycline (50 mg/kg, p.o) in combination with tocopherol (10 mg/kg, p.o), and ropinirole (0.5 mg/kg, i.p.) was given for 40 days 1 h prior to administration of rotenone. All behavioral parameters were analyzed on weekly basis. On day 41, animals were sacrificed and the striatum region was isolated for neurotransmitters estimation (dopamine, serotonin, norepinephrine, GABA and glutamate), biochemical analysis (GSH, nitrite, LPO, mitochondrial complexes I and IV), inflammatory markers estimation (IL-6, IL-1β and TNF-α) and activity of MAO-A, MAO-B. Doxycycline and tocopherol in combination significantly attenuated behavioral, neurotransmitters and biochemical alterations induced by rotenone in experimental rats as compared to alone treatment with DOX and TOCO. Similarly, DOX and TOCO combination significantly reduced the level of inflammatory markers, prevented the biochemical changes, decreased MAO-A and MAO-B and improved complex-I, complex-IV, cAMP levels significantly. The current study revealed that a combination of doxycycline with tocopherol contributed to the prevention of PD like symptoms in rats by antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, MAO inhibitory and neuromodulatory mechanisms. Brain alpha-tocopherol (αT) concentration was previously reported to be inversely associated with neurofibrillary tangle (NFT) counts in specific brain structures from centenarians. However, the contribution of natural or synthetic αT stereoisomers to this relationship is unknown. In this study, αT stereoisomers were quantified in the temporal cortex (TC) of 47 centenarians in the Georgia Centenarian Study (age: 102.2 ± 2.5 years, BMI: 22.1 ± 3.9 kg/m2) and then correlated with amyloid plaques (diffuse and neuritic plaques; DPs, NPs) and NFTs in seven brain regions. The natural stereoisomer, RRR-αT, was the primary stereoisomer in all subjects, accounting for >50% of total αT in all but five subjects. %RRR was inversely correlated with DPs in the frontal cortex (FC) (ρ = −0.35, p = 0.032) and TC (ρ = −0.34, p = 0.038). %RSS (a synthetic αT stereoisomer) was positively correlated with DPs in the TC (ρ = 0.39, p = 0.017) and with NFTs in the FC (ρ = 0.37, p = 0.024), TC (ρ = 0.42, p = 0.009), and amygdala (ρ = 0.43, p = 0.008) after controlling for covariates. Neither RRR- nor RSS-αT were associated with premortem global cognition. Even with the narrow and normal range of BMIs, BMI was correlated with %RRR-αT (ρ = 0.34, p = 0.021) and %RSS-αT (ρ = −0.45, p = 0.002). These results providing the first characterization of TC αT stereoisomer profiles in centenarians suggest that DP and NFT counts, but not premortem global cognition, are influenced by the brain accumulation of specific αT stereoisomers. Introduction: The African oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) is the predominant oil crop in the world. In addition to triacylglycerols, crude palm oil (CPO) extracted from the mesocarp of the fruits, contains high amounts of provitamin A (carotenes) and vitamin E (tocochromanols). Because of their unsaturated nature, the carotenes are prone to oxidation and therefore are in part limiting for the shelf life of CPO. Results: In the present study, a wild Oil Palm tree (C59) from Cameroon was identified that lacks α-tocopherol and α-tocotrienol and instead accumulates the respective γ forms, suggesting that the activity of γ-tocopherol methyltransferase (VTE4) was affected. Sequencing of the VTE4 locus in the genome of plant C59 identified a G/C polymorphism that causes the exchange of a highly conserved tryptophan at position 290 with serine. The W290S exchange renders the VTE4 enzyme inactive, as shown after expression in Escherichia coli and Arabidopsis thaliana. The oxidative stability of carotenes in the mesocarp of the wild palm C59 was enhanced compared with control accessions. Furthermore, supplementation of commercial palm oil with different tocochromanols showed that γ-tocotrienol exerts a stronger effect during the protection of carotenes against oxidation than α-tocotrienol. Methods: A tree with unusual toochromanol composition was identified by HPLC screening of the mesocarp of wild trees. Polymorphisms in a candidate gene were identified by DNA sequencing. The candidate protein was heterologously expressed in Escherichia coli coli and Arabidopsis thaliana to test for enzyme activity. Oxidative stability of the CPO was studied by following carotene degradation over time. Almonds are one of the most popular and widely consumed tree nuts in the world, prized for their taste, texture, and nutritional benefits. However, the quality and characteristics of almonds can vary significantly depending on the variety and growing conditions. In this context, a comparative study was conducted to explore the nut quality traits of almond local and foreign cultivars, as well as their F1 hybrid offspring resulting from crossbreeding. "Nut quality" is a dynamic concept changing based on consumer needs and perceptions that reflect sociocultural evolution. The aim of this study was to identify the most promising almond varieties and hybrids based on some nut quality traits including macro–micro elements and tocopherol contents. To accomplish this goal, samples were collected from local (Gulcan 2 and Nurlu) and foreign (Lauranne and Guara) almond cultivars, as well as F1 hybrid offspring resulting in two cross-breading ("Gulcan 2 × Lauranne" and "Guara × Nurlu"), and conducted a comprehensive analysis using high-performance liquid chromatography and atomic absorption spectroscopy. Our results showed that the nut quality traits of almonds can vary significantly among different cultivars and hybrids, with some varieties and hybrids exhibiting superior characteristics compared to others. These findings provide important insights into the potential for improving almond quality through crossbreeding and the development of new varieties with improved characteristics which can help inform breeding programs and improve the quality of almonds available in the market. Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a severe side effect of antiresorptive drugs - Bisphosphonates (BPs) and RANKL inhibitor (denosumab) - prescribed for treatment of bone malignancies and severe osteoporosis. Non-surgical treatment may be a valid option for MRONJ in patients ineligible for surgery. Published observational studies have demonstrated that a common purine derivative - pentoxifylline in combination with tocopherol are potentially useful in the nonsurgical management of MRONJ. The aim of this study was to assess the therapeutic impact and possible side effects of treatment with pentoxifylline in combination with tocopherol in patients with MRONJ. Patients were subdivided into two groups: the test group, comprising of 20 patients, underwent treatment with 800 mg pentoxifylline in combination with 1000 IU of tocopherol, whereas the other patients formed the control group. After the 6-month treatment course, the statistically significant results of our study show that treatment with pentoxifylline in association with tocopherol is efficacious for managing MRONJ nonsurgically. In plants, secondary metabolites change in response to environmental conditions. These changes co-regulate resilience to stressful environmental conditions, plant growth and development, and interactions between plants and the wider ecosystem, while also affecting soil carbon storage and atmospheric and climatic conditions. The objective of this study was to determine the association between UV exposure and the contents of key metabolites, including amino acids, phenolics, flavonoids, terpenoids, carotenoids, tocopherols, and phytosterols. Mentha spicata plantlets were grown in tissue culture boxes for 30 days and then exposed to a low dose of broadband UV-B (291–315 nm; 2.8 kJm−2 biologically effective UV) enriched light for eight days. Metabolite contents were quantified either immediately after the final UV exposure, or after seven days of recovery under photosynthetically active radiation. It was found that UV promoted the production of flavonoids (1.8-fold) ahead of phenolic acids (unchanged). Furthermore, the majority of monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes, constituents of valuable mint essential oil, were significantly increased through UV treatment (up to 90-fold for α-linalool). In contrast, the contents of carotenoids and tocopherols did not increase following UV exposure. A comparison between plants sampled immediately after UV exposure and after seven days of recovery showed that there was an overall increase in the content of carotenoids, mono- and sesquiterpenes, phenolics, and amino acids following recovery, while the contents of sterols and tocopherols decreased. These UV-induced changes in metabolite profile may have important consequences for agriculture, ecology, and even the global climate, and they also provide an exciting opportunity to enhance crop value, facilitating the development of improved products with higher levels of essential oils and added benefits of enhanced flavour, colour, and bioactive content. Summary: In this study, the effect of microwave on oil contents, bioactive components, antioxidant activity, polyphenols, tocopherols, fatty acid compositions and nutrients of purslane seeds was investigated. The moisture amount of the purslane seeds decreased significantly, while the oil and bioactive properties of the seeds increased compared to the control. Raw (control) and purslane seeds roasted in microwave contained 24.72 and 26.27 mg/100 g gallic acid, 34.12 and 38.30 mg/100 g 3,4‐dihydroxybenzoic acid, 111.57 and 118.55 mg/100 g catechin, 8.70 and 3.46 caffeic acid, 5.95 and 5.09 mg/100 g syringic acid, 18.73 and 8.34 mg/100 g rutin and 3.07 and 2.26 mg/100 g quercetin, respectively. Stearic, linoleic, arachidic, linolenic, behenic and erucic acid results of the oils of raw and purslane seeds roasted in microwave were partially increased compared to raw seed oil. The applied heat treatment had a positive effect on the tocopherol results of the purslane seed oils, and the tocopherol contents of the oils obtained from the roasted seeds increased compared to the control. Summary: Soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) is a major crop worldwide, providing essential dietary proteins and edible oils for agriculture, food, animal feed and biofuel industries. However, its limited genetic variation makes it vulnerable to harsh environmental conditions, and its chemical diversity was strongly reduced after long domestication. Wild soybean (Glycine soja Sieb. et Zucc.), the ancestor of the G. max, possesses a high level of genetic diversity and thus present a precious reservoir for improving cultivated soybean. Characterising metabolomes of different G. soja accessions is crucial in exploring metabolite accumulation patterns for developing metabolic breeding strategies. This study successfully revealed the metabolomes of sixty‐four seed lines of G. soja collected throughout Japan by a widely targeted metabolomics approach, therefore, providing a good source of information for further studies to induce the production of bioactive compounds and the defence mechanism to stress. In this study, seed and oil yields, protein, and moisture ratios of seeds of four different types of pumpkin seed varieties, namely Palancı population, VD1sn8, and VD1sn6 hybrid varieties and commercial variety grown in Edirne conditions in 2014 and 2015. Also, this study aimed to determine the change of fatty acid, tocopherol, and sterol composition of mentioned pumpkin seed varieties in three different periods from seed formation to final harvest time. During the ripening period, it was obtained that the oil yield increased, the moisture content of pumpkin seeds decreased. In the last harvest period, the oil yield of pumpkin seed varieties was determined to be between 37.21% and 42.07%. Protein ratios of all pumpkin seed species were found to be very close to each other (37.94%–39.28%) and statistically similar (p > 0.05). In 2014 and 2015, the dominant fatty acids for all pumpkin seed varieties are 18:1 (39.49%–46.95%) and 18:2 (32.57%–39.26%). Except for these fatty acids, 16:0 varies between 10.65% and 13.60% in all varieties; 18:0 varies at a ratio of 5.70%–6.38%. It is seen that the dominant tocopherol isomer is γ‐tocopherol for all pumpkin seed species in all harvest periods. In the last harvest period in 2014 and 2015, the amounts of γ‐tocopherol constitute 99.98%–84.95% and 86.91%–89.86% of the total tocopherol, respectively. It was observed that the tocopherol composition changed during the ripening period in all pumpkin seed species (p < 0.05). In general, the amount of sterols decreased during the ripening period for all cultivars in 2014 and 2015. In order from the highest to the least, β‐sitosterol, 5,24‐stigmastadienol, campesterol, Δ‐5 avenasterol, and stigmasterol were determined as phytosterols in pumpkin seed oils. Generally, β‐sitosterol ratios in all varieties were high in the 1st harvest period, decreased slightly in the 2nd harvest period, increased again until the 3rd harvest period and reached the values in the 1st harvest period in both 2014 and 2015. Based on the results of earlier studies, conclusions were drawn that deep sowing altered the physio-biochemical and agronomic characteristics of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Results In this study, seeds of wheat were sown at 2 (control) and 6 cm depth and the impact of exogenously applied salicylic acid and tocopherol (Vitamin-E) on its physio-biochemical and agronomic features was assessed. As a result, seeds grown at 2 cm depth witnessed an increase in mean germination time, germination percentage, germination rate index, germination energy, and seed vigor index. In contrast, 6 cm deep sowing resulted in negatively affecting all the aforementioned agronomic characteristics. In addition, deep planting led to a rise in MDA, glutathione reductase, and antioxidants enzymes including APX, POD, and SOD concentration. Moreover, the concentration of chlorophyll a, b, carotenoids, proline, protein, sugar, hydrogen peroxide, and agronomic attributes was boosted significantly with exogenously applied salicylic acid and tocopherol under deep sowing stress. Conclusions The results of the study showed that the depth of seed sowing has an impact on agronomic and physio-biochemical characteristics and that the negative effects of deep sowing stress can be reduced by applying salicylic acid and tocopherol to the leaves.

Abstract Soybean seeds are excellent sources of tocopherols, B vitamins, and isoflavones, which are well known for their health benefits. This study investigated the influence of environment and genotype on these constituents across 13 Korean soybean varieties cultivated in three locations during the 2017–2019 growing seasons. Statistical analyses, employing both univariate and multivariate methods, revealed significant impacts of genetic and environmental factors on the composition of tocopherols, B vitamins, and isoflavones. Through permutational univariate analysis of variance, the primary contributors to each measured component were identified. Genotype strongly influenced the levels of β- and δ-tocopherols, whereas the interaction between location and year predominantly affected α- and γ-tocopherols. Vitamin B1 content was predominantly determined by genotype, whereas B3 and B6 were influenced by annual variations. Vitamin B2 level was primarily affected by the interplay between environmental and genotypic effects. Genotype had a significant effect on isoflavone components, with the exception of daidzein. Furthermore, early maturing varieties and those with black seed coats exhibited low levels of isoflavone components and total isoflavones, suggesting a relationship between maturity group and seed coat color in isoflavone variation. These findings can be used as reference values for compositional equivalence assessment of genetically modified soybeans.

Over the years, research has shown that both tocopherols and tocotrienols offer significant benefits, including protection against radiation damage, cholesterol regulation, cardiovascular health, and neurological disorders. This wide range of benefits highlights the need for further exploration of vitamin E’s role in managing various diseases. One particularly promising area is its potential application in treating ocular diseases like glaucoma. Despite advances in treatment, current options have limitations, making the investigation of alternative approaches crucial. Omics technologies, which allow for a detailed examination of biological systems, could provide valuable insights into how tocopherols and tocotrienols work at a molecular level. Their neuroprotective and antioxidative properties make them promising candidates for glaucoma management. Additionally, the sustainability of vitamin E is noteworthy, as by-products from its production can be repurposed into valuable resources for nutraceuticals and pharmaceuticals. As research continues, integrating omics technologies with the study of vitamin E derivatives could unveil new therapeutic possibilities, further enhancing our understanding of its diverse health benefits and its potential role in preventing and managing diseases.

Featured Application: Pulsed electric field (PEF) technology has been extensively investigated in the realm of plant oil extraction, yielding positive outcomes for various oils such as olive, rapeseed, and sunflower. Consensus has been reached that PEF can undeniably enhance oil yield. Given the low yield, yet high nutritional and economic value of peony seeds, it is imperative to improve their oil production; however, limited research exists on utilizing PEF to enhance peony seed oil yield. Conducting relevant studies will facilitate the application and popularization of PEF technology and equipment in the domain of peony seed oil extraction. Peony seed oil, known for its high nutritional value and low production yield, has become a crucial component in high-quality health products. Consequently, enhancing the extraction efficiency of peony seed oil has become an industry objective. Pulse electric field (PEF) technology, as a non-thermal extraction method, has shown promising advancements in improving plant oil yield by enhancing cell permeability. In this study, we designed a static parallel plate PEF treatment unit to process peony seed particles. By manipulating pulse voltage parameters, we investigated the effects of particle size and PEF strength on the oil yield. We also analyzed and evaluated tocopherol in the oil before and after treatment. The results demonstrated that PEF significantly increased the oil yield. Both treated and control groups exhibited gradually increased oil yields with decreasing particle size until reaching saturation at a certain particle size. Increasing voltage frequency did not have a significant impact on the oil yield; however, increasing voltage amplitude resulted in an optimal point for maximum oil yield. Analysis of oil composition indicated that PEF appropriately increased tocopherol content. Cationic dendritic amphiphiles were prepared through the linkage of interesting hydrophobic molecules such as cholesterol or vitamin E to the focal point of carbosilane dendrons. These new dendritic systems self-assembled in saline, producing micellar aggregates with hydrodynamic diameters ranging from 6.5 to 9.2 nm, and critical micelle concentrations of approximately 5 and 10 μM for second- and third-generation systems, respectively. The assemblies were able to encapsulate drugs of different charges (anionic, neutral, and cationic). Surprisingly, a 92% encapsulation efficiency for diclofenac was achieved in micelles prepared from second-generation dendrons. Toxicity measurements on peripheral blood mononuclear cells indicated different behavior depending on the generation, corresponding to the micellar regime. In contrast to the third-generation system, the second-generation system was non-toxic up to 20 μM, opening a window for its use in a micellar regimen, thereby operating as a drug delivery system for different biomedical applications. To investigate the potential functional properties and added value of okra seed oil and provide a scientific basis for further industrial development and production of okra seed oil, its fatty acid profile, total phenolic, fat‐soluble vitamin composition, mineral element composition, and antioxidant activities were examined in this study. Also, correlations between bioactive components and the antioxidant activities of okra seed oil were explored. The study results show that okra seed oil contains 12 types of fatty acids, 65.22% of which are unsaturated acids, and among these unsaturated acids, linoleic acid (43%) and oleic acid (20.16%) are two dominant acid types. Compared with walnut oil and peanut oil, okra seed oil contains relatively high total phenols, fat‐soluble vitamins, and a variety of essential mineral nutrients, with a total phenolic content (TPC) of 959.65 μg/mL, a total tocopherol content of 742.71 μg/mL, a vitamin A content of 0.0017 μg/100 mL, a vitamin D content of 1.44 μg/100 mL, and a vitamin K1 content of 52.54 ng/100 mg. Also, okra seed oil exhibits better scavenging activities on hydroxyl (IC50 = 0.50 mg/mL) and ammonium salt (ABTS) free radicals (IC50 = 6.46 mg/mL) and certain reducing power (IC50 = 17.22 mg/mL) at the same concentration. The scavenging activities of okra seed oil on hydroxyl radicals and ABTS radicals, as well as its reducing power, are significantly correlated with its contents of total phenol, total tocopherol, α‐tocopherol, and γ‐tocopherol (p <.01). In 2021, we published three papers related to the anti-inflammatory effects of food ingredients. The present paper reports the effects of vitamin E homologs and sweet basil powder. In these papers, we investigated whether inflammation occurs in the adipose tissue of mice fed a high-fat and high-sucrose diet for 16 weeks. Inflammatory cytokine gene expression was significantly higher in the epididymal fat of the high-fat and high-sucrose diet group than in that of the control diet group. However, the addition of α-tocopherol or δ-tocopherol to the diet could not restrain the inflammation of mice epididymal fats. Thereafter, we investigated the anti-inflammatory effects of α- and δ-tocopherols using the co-cultured cells. Consequently, we clarified that δ-tocopherol inhibited the increase in the gene expressions of inflammatory cytokines. We also examined the effect of sweet basil powder on a similar obese mice model. The final body weight in the high-fat and high-sucrose group that received sweet basil powder was significantly lower than that in the high-fat and high-sucrose diet group. Liver weights were also significantly lower in the high-fat and high-sucrose diet group that received sweet basil powder than in the high-fat and high-sucrose diet group, although adipose tissue weights were unchanged in both groups. Furthermore, sweet basil powder tended to inhibit in lipid synthesis in the mice livers. Therefore, we suggested that sweet basil powder inhibited fatty acid synthesis in mice livers, thereby suppressing liver enlargement, and resulting in body weight loss. Moreover, the gene expression of MCP-1 in the adipose tissue of mice fed a high-fat and high-sucrose diet added with sweet basil powder was significantly lower than that of mice fed a high-fat and high-sucrose diet for 12 weeks. Therefore, sweet basil powder inhibited inflammation onset in the adipose tissue of mice. Taken together, the results suggested that food ingredients, especially vitamin E homologs and sweet basil powder, have anti-inflammatory effects on mice adipose tissue and mice adipocyte-induced inflammation. Vitamin E (VE) is a lipophilic vitamin, and Evans and Bishop demonstrated the existence of a hitherto unrecognized dietary factor essential for normal reproduction in rat. During 100 years after the discovery, α-tocopherol (α-Toc) has been the representative species in VE homologues, and both naturally occurring and synthetically prepared α-Toc have been widely used and studied. Although it is indicated by a single-word VE, research on VE involves various chemical species. It is important to understand the fine structure and accurate characteristics of individual VE species when using VE. Each VE sample has compositional and/or isomer issues, and furthermore, the usability greatly varies depending on the modified species of esterification. The VE industry involves many interdisciplinary fields. Improvements in formulation technology and confirmation of the novel biological activity of VE greatly owns its utility and opens up new applications. As the interim period between the start and end of the agenda for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in this minireview, the recent trends and future guidelines of VE, especially α-Toc, in relation to the SDGs have been demonstrated. Homogentisate Phytyltransferase (HPT) catalyzes condensation of homogentisate (HGA) and phytyl diphosphate (PDP) to produce tocopherols, but can also synthesize tocotrienols using geranylgeranyl diphosphate (GGDP) in plants engineered for deregulated HGA synthesis. In contrast to prior tocotrienol biofortification efforts, engineering enhanced tocopherol concentrations in green oilseeds has proven more challenging due to the integral role of chlorophyll metabolism in supplying the PDP substrate. This study show that RNAi suppression of CHLSYN coupled with HPT overexpression increases tocopherol concentrations by >two-fold in Arabidopsis seeds. We obtained additional increases in seed tocopherol concentrations by engineering increased HGA production via overexpression of bacterial TyrA that encodes chorismate mutase/prephenate dehydrogenase activities. In overexpression lines, seed tocopherol concentrations increased nearly three-fold, and resulted in modest tocotrienol accumulation. We further increased total tocochromanol concentrations by enhancing production of HGA and GGDP by overexpression of the gene for hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD). This shifted metabolism towards increased amounts of tocotrienols relative to tocopherols, which was reflected in corresponding increases in ratios of GGDP/PDP in these seeds. Overall, our results provide a theoretical basis for genetic improvement of total tocopherol concentrations in green oilseeds (e.g., rapeseed, soybean) through strategies that include seed-suppression of CHLSYN coupled with increased HGA production. Summary: A quick, simple, environmentally friendly and cost‐effective screening approach for identifying parameters of adulteration in cold‐pressed olive oil (CPOO) was developed. The technique focused on the electrochemical examination of the peak of alpha‐tocopherol oxidation on pencil graphite electrode (PGE). Rapeseed oil (RO), sunflower oil (SO), and corn oil (CO) were added to local CPOO in varying amounts, and the mixtures were then tested by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) on PGE. Voltammetric analysis of CPOO and its artificially created mixtures with other commercial oils have demonstrated statistically significant discrimination with an ability to detect adulteration under the level of 10% on weight basis. The method's relative standard deviation (RSD) was 20%, and the α‐tocopherol in CPOO cut‐off value was 30.98 ± 12.57 nA. As far as our knowledge, no data on utilisation of voltammetric techniques for the detection of olive oil adulteration are available to date by using PGE. Over the course of two winter periods, researchers at the Agricultural Experiment Unit, College of Agricultural Engineering Sciences, University of Baghdad, studied the effects of covering wheat (the Al-Furat variety) and “vitamins B9” (“folic acid”) and E “(tocopherol)” on a number of growth traits. Three independent trials were conducted utilizing a factorial design within a Randomized Complete Block Design. The first component was folic acid at 0, 250, and 500 mg L-1 ; the second component was vitamin E at 0, 1, and 2 ml L-1 . At the start of the tillering and flowering stages, both vitamins were applied. All measured characteristics (plant height, flag leaf area, total tiller count, plant dry weight at booting and 100% blooming phases, and “vitamin B9” 500 mg L-1 ) were found exceeded at this dosage. Aside from that, total chlorophyll, chlorophyll a and b content in leaves, and the pace of crop growth.Since the focus of 2 ml L-1 was higher than most of the attributes, applying vitamin E influenced the growth characteristics. Background Tocopherol is known to have an anti-inflammatory effect, thereby reducing erythema, edema, and skin irritation, which are the main pathologies observed in diaper dermatitis. Objective To compare the effect of local application of a combination of 10% zinc oxide and tocopherol in the treatment of infant diaper dermatitis with plain 10% zinc oxide. Methods A single-centric, prospective interventional study was conducted in a tertiary care hospital for 18 months where all children aged <1 year newly diagnosed with diaper dermatitis were selected. They were divided into two groups; one group received only 10% zinc oxide, while the other group received a combination of 10% zinc oxide and tocopherol for local application. Patients were assessed for rash dimensions, severity score of diaper dermatitis, and pH of the rash prior to starting treatment and at the end of 5 days. Statistical analysis was done using students paired two-tailed T-test. Results Out of 115 infants with diaper dermatitis, 88 were included in our study. The decrease in rash dimensions was greater in the study group (P=0.004). A mean diaper dermatitis severity score of 1.96 (SD 0.76) cm in the study group was noted on day five of the assessment (P<0.001). Conclusion The healing process in diaper dermatitis is accelerated when a combination of 10% zinc oxide and tocopherol is used. Tocopherol is an important lipid-soluble antioxidant beneficial for both human health and plant growth. Here, we fine mapped a major QTL-qVE1 affecting γ-tocopherol content in maize kernel, positionally cloned and confirmed the underlying gene ZmPORB1 (por1), as a protochlorophyllide oxidoreductase. A 13.7 kb insertion reduced the tocopherol and chlorophyll content, and the photosynthetic activity by repressing ZmPORB1 expression in embryos of NIL-K22, but did not affect the levels of the tocopherol precursors HGA (homogentisic acid) and PMP (phytyl monophosphate). Furthermore, ZmPORB1 is inducible by low oxygen and light, thereby involved in the hypoxia response in developing embryos. Concurrent with natural hypoxia in embryos, the redox state has been changed with NO increasing and H2O2 decreasing, which lowered γ-tocopherol content via scavenging reactive nitrogen species. In conclusion, we proposed that the lower light-harvesting chlorophyll content weakened embryo photosynthesis, leading to fewer oxygen supplies and consequently diverse hypoxic responses including an elevated γ-tocopherol consumption. Our findings shed light on the mechanism for fine-tuning endogenous oxygen concentration in the maize embryo through a novel feedback pathway involving the light and low oxygen regulation of ZmPORB1 expression and chlorophyll content. Abstract: Roselle is an annual botanical plant that widely planted in different countries worldwide. Its different parts, including seeds, leaves, and calyces, can offer multi-purpose applications with economic importance. The present review discusses the detailed profile of bioactive compounds present in roselle seeds, leaves, and calyces, as well as their extraction and processing, to explore their potential application in pharmaceutical, cosmetic, nutraceutical, food and other industries. Roselle seeds with high phenolics, fiber, and protein contents, which are suitable to use in functional food product development. Besides, roselle seeds can yield 17-20% of roselle seed oil with high content of linoleic acid (35.0-45.3%) and oleic acid (27.1- 36.9%). This unique fatty acid composition of roselle seed oil makes it suitable to use as edible oil to offer the health benefits of essential fatty acid. Moreover, high contents of tocopherols, phenolics, and phytosterols were detected in roselle seed oil to provide nutritional, pharmaceutical, and therapeutic properties. On the other hand, roselle leaves with valuable contents of phenols, flavonoids, organic acid, and tocopherols can be applied in silver nanoparticles, food product development, and the pharmaceutical industry. Purification of extracts from the etiolated seedlings of runner bean (Phaseolus coccineus), coupled with mass spectrometry analysis of proteins revealed that the enzyme responsible for tocopherol oxidation activity is lipoxygenase, an enzyme known for enzymatic lipid peroxidation of unsaturated lipids. Biochemical analysis of the activity, along with the expression profile of three LOX isoforms (LOX1, LOX2, LOX3) in various parts of the etiolated seedlings, revealed that LOX3 was the major isoform expressed in the epicotyls, indicating that this isoform was responsible for the tocopherol oxidation activity; in the primary leaves, besides LOX3, the other two isoforms might have also contributed to the activity. The experiments performed in the model systems showed that unsaturated lipids were not required for the tocopherol oxidase activity, but that lipids were necessary to provide an optimal, hydrophobic environment of the substrate for the reaction. The experiments on lipoxygenase and tocopherol oxidase activities in the leaves of light-grown P. coccineus plants during aging and during storage of the extracts from etiolated seedlings showed that the activity of the first reaction decreased considerably faster than the latter, indicating different mechanisms of both reactions performed by the same enzyme. As LOX3 was shown to occur in the apoplast of the related species P. vulgaris, the question as to the physiological function of LOX3 in the tocopherol oxidation activity in P. coccineus is discussed. The article is devoted to the influence of natural antioxidants on the quality parameters of meat semi-finished products from horse meat and the microbiological stability of the product during its storage. In solving the set tasks, the standard, generally accepted methods of research were used. Statistical processing of the obtained results and assessment of data reliability were carried out by statistical methods using Microsoft Excel and Statistica (version 12.0). A new antioxidant of natural origin, dihydroquercetin, has been proposed and tested. Effective doses of its application have been established: 0.05 - 0.075% for raw horse fat and 0.075% for semi-finished meat products from horse meat produced with its addition. It has been shown that the administration of dihydroquercetin (Dx) together with ascorbic acid (AA) and tocopherol (Tp) is 10-30% more effective. The effect of dihydroquercetin on the indicators of oxidative spoilage in the technological process, from the production of horse meat to finished products using the latter, has been studied. The organoleptic parameters (appearance, odour, colour) of the control sample and the sample with 0.025% Dx by fat weight corresponded in their characteristics to the experimental samples with 0.05%, 0.075% and 0.1% by 45 days of storage. The introduction of dihydroquercetin, ascorbic acid, and tocopherol also makes it possible to slow down the microbiological spoilage of the semi-finished products that have been obtained during storage.

IntroductionThe African oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) is the predominant oil crop in the world. In addition to triacylglycerols, crude palm oil (CPO) extracted from the mesocarp of the fruits, contains high amounts of provitamin A (carotenes) and vitamin E (tocochromanols). Because of their unsaturated nature, the carotenes are prone to oxidation and therefore are in part limiting for the shelf life of CPO.MethodsA tree with unusual toochromanol composition was identified by HPLC screening of the mesocarp of wild trees. Polymorphisms in a candidate gene were identified by DNA sequencing. The candidate protein was heterologously expressed in Escherichia coli coli and Arabidopsis thaliana to test for enzyme activity. Oxidative stability of the CPO was studied by following carotene degradation over time.ResultsIn the present study, a wild Oil Palm tree (C59) from Cameroon was identified that lacks α-tocopherol and α-tocotrienol and instead accumulates the respective γ forms, suggesting that the activity of γ-tocopherol methyltransferase (VTE4) was affected. Sequencing of the VTE4 locus in the genome of plant C59 identified a G/C polymorphism that causes the exchange of a highly conserved tryptophan at position 290 with serine. The W290S exchange renders the VTE4 enzyme inactive, as shown after expression in Escherichia coli and Arabidopsis thaliana. The oxidative stability of carotenes in the mesocarp of the wild palm C59 was enhanced compared with control accessions. Furthermore, supplementation of commercial palm oil with different tocochromanols showed that γ-tocotrienol exerts a stronger effect during the protection of carotenes against oxidation than α-tocotrienol.DiscussionTherefore, the introduction of the high γ-tocotrienol trait into elite breeding lines represents a potent strategy to protect carotenes against oxidation and extend the shelf life of CPO, hence allowing the development of a value added high-carotene CPO to be used to fight against vitamin A deficiency.

Palm oil is an edible oil derived from the mesocarp of oil palm fruit (Elaeis guineensis), which has a high content of carotenoids and tocopherol components. This research aimed to study the effects of light intensity on the photo-oxidation stability of a red and yellow palm olein mixture. The red and yellow palm oleins were mixed into 100, 200, and 350 ppm carotene content. The photo-oxidation stability of the palm olein mixture was investigated under fluorescent light intensities of 5,000 and 10,000 lux at 31 ±2 °C for 7 days. Changes in the content of chlorophyll, carotene, tocopherols, and peroxide value (PV) were evaluated daily. The results showed that an increase in carotene and tocopherol contents effectively improved the photo-oxidative stability of the palm olein mixture. Degradation of chlorophyll, tocopherols, and increased PV were proportional to light intensity during photo-oxidation. There were no significant changes in carotene content at 5,000 lux light intensity exposure. The degradation rates of chlorophyll and tocopherols can be described as first-order reaction kinetics. In contrast, the increase rate of PV can be described as a zero-order kinetics model with k-values of 6.6 x 10-2, 4.9 x 10-2, 3.7 x 10-2 mequiv.kg-1.h-1, and 8.3 x 10-2, 6.8 x 10-2, and 5.6 x 10-2 mequiv.kg-1.h-1 in palm olein mixture, which contains 100, 200, and 350 ppm carotene at 5,000 and 10,000 lux light intensity exposure, respectively. These results suggested that carotene protected tocopherol in palm olein and that tocopherol and carotene synergistically acted as singlet oxygen quenchers during photo-oxidation.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of different pulp drying processes and extracting methods of avocado oil (Margarida), determined by quality indices, bioactive compounds and fatty acid profile. The avocado pulp was dried in air circulation oven at 40 °C and 60 °C, and in vacuum oven at 60 °C. The oil was extracted by mechanical press or by Soxhlet method. The acidity, peroxide value, iodine, refractive indices; phenolic compounds; carotenoids; chlorophyll; tocopherols; antioxidant activity; fatty acid profiles; ratio between hypocholesterolemic and hypercholesterolemic fatty acids (h/H); atherogenic and thrombogenic indices, besides avocado pulp characteristics were evaluated. The best oil quality was found for pulp dried at 60 °C under vacuum combined with Soxhlet extraction. The content of bioactive compounds was higher when the pulp was dried at 60 °C in an oven with air circulation combined with mechanical pressing. No significant effect was observed on the fatty acid profile. The atherogenic and thrombogenic indices showed low values and h/H ratio, within the desirable. The results showed advantage in drying the pulp at 60 °C. The oil evidenced being a good source of bioactive compounds, presenting an interesting fatty acid profile, h/h ratio, atherogenic and thrombogenic indices.
