We document 26 incidents of sunning behavior in 5 species of Accipitridae, including Crested Eagle (Morphnus guianensis), Black Hawk-Eagle (Spizaetus tyrannus), Ornate Hawk-Eagle (Spizaetus omatus), Roadside Hawk (Rupomis magnirostris), and White Hawk (Pseudastur albicollis), during a camera-trap survey conducted in Madre de Dios, Peru, in 2014. The sunning behavior was observed in forest clearings along logging trails and on a dirt road. We recorded 2 high-intensity sunning postures: 'full-spreadeagle,' in which the bird lies horizontally on the ground with wings outstretched, tail fanned, and head somewhat raised; and 'full-spread,' in which the bird stands while holding its wings out at right angles to the body. Sunning is a maintenance behavior observed in many bird species and has been reported in Accipitriformes in various habitats, but it is not commonly observed in tropical rainforests because of low visibility. Our camera traps recorded sunning behavior from 0931 h to 1400 h, a period in which ambient temperature increased until reaching its maximum around 1400 h. The most likely function of sunning in Accipitriformes in the rainforest is an anti-ectoparasite strategy. Camera-trap monitoring has been useful in detecting unusual interactions and diel patterns of activity, and researchers can obtain a wide range of natural history, ecological, and behavioral insights that would be difficult to obtain using traditional methods. We recommend analyzing 'bycatch' data from camera traps to recover information about bird behaviors that would otherwise be unattainable. Received 1 October 2023. Accepted 10 June 2024 ... El comportamiento de asoleamiento es un comportamiento de mantenimiento observado en muchas especies de aves y ha sido registrado en Accipitriformes en varios habitats, pero no es comunmente observado en bosques lluviosos tropicales debido a la baja visibilidad. Nuestras camaras trampa registraron comportamiento de asoleamiento entre las 0931 h y las 1400 h, periodo en el cual la temperatura aumento hasta alcanzar su valor maximo alrededor de las 1400 h. Adaptation to extreme environments often involves the evolution of dramatic physiological changes. To better understand how organisms evolve these complex phenotypic changes, the repeatability and predictability of evolution, and possible constraints on adapting to an extreme environment, it is important to understand how adaptive variation has evolved. Poeciliid fishes represent a particularly fruitful study system for investigations of adaptation to extreme environments due to their repeated colonization of toxic hydrogen sulfide-rich springs across multiple species within the clade. Previous investigations have highlighted changes in the physiology and gene expression in specific species that are thought to facilitate adaptation to hydrogen sulfide-rich springs. However, the presence of adaptive nucleotide variation in coding and regulatory regions and the degree to which convergent evolution has shaped the genomic regions underpinning sulfide tolerance across taxa are unknown. By sampling across seven independent lineages in which nonsulfidic lineages have colonized and adapted to sulfide springs, we reveal signatures of shared evolutionary rate shifts across the genome. We found evidence of genes, promoters, and putative enhancer regions associated with both increased and decreased convergent evolutionary rate shifts in hydrogen sulfide-adapted lineages. Our analysis highlights convergent evolutionary rate shifts in sulfidic lineages associated with the modulation of endogenous hydrogen sulfide production and hydrogen sulfide detoxification. We also found that regions with shifted evolutionary rates in sulfide spring fishes more often exhibited convergent shifts in either the coding region or the regulatory sequence of a given gene, rather than both.

Carbonaceous aerosols (CA), composed of black carbon (BC) and organic matter (OM), significantly impact the climate. Light absorption properties of CA, particularly of BC and brown carbon (BrC), are crucial due to their contribution to global and regional warming. We present the absorption properties of BC (bAbs,BC) and BrC (bAbs,BrC) inferred using Aethalometer data from 44 European sites covering different environments (traffic (TR), urban (UB), suburban (SUB), regional background (RB) and mountain (M)). Absorption coefficients showed a clear relationship with station setting decreasing as follows: TR > UB > SUB > RB > M, with exceptions. The contribution of bAbs,BrC to total absorption (bAbs), i.e. %AbsBrC, was lower at traffic sites (11–20 %), exceeding 30 % at some SUB and RB sites. Low AAE values were observed at TR sites, due to the dominance of internal combustion emissions, and at some remote RB/M sites, likely due to the lack of proximity to BrC sources, insufficient secondary processes generating BrC or the effect of photobleaching during transport. Higher bAbs and AAE were observed in Central/Eastern Europe compared to Western/Northern Europe, due to higher coal and biomass burning emissions in the east. Seasonal analysis showed increased bAbs, bAbs,BC, bAbs,BrC in winter, with stronger %AbsBrC, leading to higher AAE. Diel cycles of bAbs,BC peaked during morning and evening rush hours, whereas bAbs,BrC, %AbsBrC, AAE, and AAEBrC peaked at night when emissions from household activities accumulated. Decade-long trends analyses demonstrated a decrease in bAbs, due to reduction of BC emissions, while bAbs,BrC and AAE increased, suggesting a shift in CA composition, with a relative increase in BrC over BC. This study provides a unique dataset to assess the BrC effects on climate and confirms that BrC can contribute significantly to UV–VIS radiation presenting highly variable absorption properties in Europe.

Assessing group differences through effect size estimations has become standard practice in educational research. However, the interpretation of these effect sizes is often discussed without considering contextual factors such as prior knowledge, motivation, and socio-economic background that influence the learning outcome. In this methods paper, we discuss the significance of considering affective, cognitive, and sociographic factors when interpreting effect sizes. Furthermore, we propose a theoretical framework for two primary types of effect size distribution based on prior knowledge. This framework may enable researchers in the learning sciences to interpret and contextualize their findings beyond testing null hypotheses and reporting abstracted effect sizes. - Contextual factors, including prior knowledge or motivation, should be taken into account when interpreting effect sizes. - In relationship to prior knowledge, effect sizes often follow a normal distribution or an extension thereof following one period of a sine-like wave.

Abstract Camera trapping has revolutionized wildlife ecology and conservation by providing automated data acquisition, leading to the accumulation of massive amounts of camera trap data worldwide. Although management and processing of camera trap‐derived Big Data are becoming increasingly solvable with the help of scalable cyber‐infrastructures, harmonization and exchange of the data remain limited, hindering its full potential. There is currently no widely accepted standard for exchanging camera trap data. The only existing proposal, “Camera Trap Metadata Standard” (CTMS), has several technical shortcomings and limited adoption. We present a new data exchange format, the Camera Trap Data Package (Camtrap DP), designed to allow users to easily exchange, harmonize and archive camera trap data at local to global scales. Camtrap DP structures camera trap data in a simple yet flexible data model consisting of three tables (Deployments, Media and Observations) that supports a wide range of camera deployment designs, classification techniques (e.g., human and AI, media‐based and event‐based) and analytical use cases, from compiling species occurrence data through distribution, occupancy and activity modeling to density estimation. The format further achieves interoperability by building upon existing standards, Frictionless Data Package in particular, which is supported by a suite of open software tools to read and validate data. Camtrap DP is the consensus of a long, in‐depth, consultation and outreach process with standard and software developers, the main existing camera trap data management platforms, major players in the field of camera trapping and the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF). Under the umbrella of the Biodiversity Information Standards (TDWG), Camtrap DP has been developed openly, collaboratively and with version control from the start. We encourage camera trapping users and developers to join the discussion and contribute to the further development and adoption of this standard.

ABSTRACT Peru holds a high mammalian diversity in its Amazonian region, with 326 species. However, our knowledge about the actual diversity is still considered incomplete, and the molecular information for those species in genetic databases is even less comprehensive. To assess the availability of genetic information for Peruvian Amazonian mammals relative to known diversity, we surveyed the Amazonian mammals with at least one molecular marker in the most widely used repositories for nucleotide sequences, GenBank and BOLD Systems. Our survey focused on widely used molecular markers in evolutionary biology-cytochrome b [cyt-b], cytochrome oxidase I [COI], 12S ribosomal RNA [12S], and the mitogenome [mit]-derived from Peruvian Amazon mammals. Additionally, to gain insights into the current mammalian sampling effort in Peruvian Amazonia, we generated a map of unique sampling localities and a heat map, utilizing 41951 records, which identified six major information gaps. This comprehensive analysis found 1597 genetic sequences corresponding to 180 mammalian species (55.2% of Peruvian Amazonian species): COI (38 species), cyt-b (167 species), 12S (56 species), and mitogenome (16 species). Taxonomically, Rodentia (53 species, four markers), Chiroptera (63 species, three markers), and Didelphimorphia (27 species, four markers) represented most molecular data, with a concentration of molecular markers in the orders Chiroptera (703) and Rodentia (499). Geographically, the Loreto department has the largest genetic information (530 records, 99 species). These results confirm a worrying underrepresentation of Peruvian Amazonian diversity in molecular databases. Consequently, we advocate for the use of scientific collections as an alternative source to systematically generate genetic information for the Amazonian mammal diversity in Peru to compensate for the current underrepresentation.

Evaluating text-based answers obtained in educational settings or behavioral studies is time-consuming and resource-intensive. Applying novel artificial intelligence tools such as ChatGPT might support the process. Still, currently available implementations do not allow for automated and case-specific evaluations of large numbers of student answers. To counter this limitation, we developed a flexible software and user-friendly web application that enables researchers and educators to use cutting-edge artificial intelligence technologies by providing an interface that combines large language models with options to specify questions of interest, sample solutions, and evaluation instructions for automated answer scoring. We validated the method in an empirical study and found the software with expert ratings to have high reliability. Hence, the present software constitutes a valuable tool to facilitate and enhance text-based answer evaluation. • Generative AI-enhanced software for customizable, case-specific, and automized grading of large amounts of text-based answers. • Open-source software and web application for direct implementation and adaptation.

Visual sensitivity and body pigmentation are often shaped by both natural selection from the environment and sexual selection from mate choice. One way of quantifying the impact of the environment is by measuring how traits have changed after colonization of a novel habitat. To do this, we studied Poecilia mexicana populations that have repeatedly adapted to extreme sulphidic (H2 S-containing) environments. We measured visual sensitivity using opsin gene expression, as well as body pigmentation, for populations in four independent drainages. Both visual sensitivity and body pigmentation showed significant parallel shifts towards greater medium-wavelength sensitivity and reflectance in sulphidic populations. Altogether we found that sulphidic habitats select for differences in visual sensitivity and pigmentation. Shifts between habitats may be due to both differences in the water's spectral properties and correlated ecological changes.

Fundamental concepts in biology are often challenging to understand. More strikingly, studies also report incorrect or incomplete understanding of such concepts for undergraduate natural science students even after instruction. Recent research suggests that embedding conceptual information in a narrative could support students’ learning process and facilitate conceptual change. Therefore, we designed learning materials covering complex concepts in biology either in the form of a narrative presenting the to-be-learned concepts in a historical context or as an expository text as control. We then assessed conceptual understanding and potential learning mechanisms. Results indicate that students learned from narrative texts and expository texts to a similar extent. However, if the prior knowledge was higher, the effect on learning was bigger in the narrative group than in the expository group. Moreover, the narrative led to better enjoyment and a higher germane cognitive load than the expository text material.

Background The determinants and prognostic value of high‐sensitivity cardiac troponin T (hs‐cTnT) among patients with a systemic right ventricle are largely unknown. Methods and Results Ninety‐eight patients from the randomized controlled SERVE (Effect of Phosphodiesterase‐5 Inhibition With Tadalafil on Systemic Right Ventricular Size and Function) trial were included. The correlation between baseline hs‐cTnT concentrations and biventricular volumes and function quantified by cardiac magnetic resonance or cardiac multirow detector computed tomography was assessed by adjusted linear regression models. The prognostic value of hs‐cTnT was assessed by adjusted Cox proportional hazards models, survival analysis, and concordance statistics. The primary outcome was time to the composite of clinically relevant arrhythmia, hospitalization for heart failure, or all‐cause death. Median age was 39 (interquartile range, 32–48) years, and 32% were women. Median hs‐cTnT concentration was 7 (interquartile range, 4–11) ng/L. Coefficients of determination for the relationship between hs‐cTnT concentrations and right ventricular end‐systolic volume index and right ventricular ejection fraction (RVEF) were +0.368 (P=0.046) and −0.381 (P=0.018), respectively. The sex‐ and age‐adjusted hazard ratio for the primary outcome of hs‐cTnT at 2 and 4 times the reference level (5 ng/L) were 2.89 (95% CI, 1.14–7.29) and 4.42 (95% CI, 1.21–16.15), respectively. The prognostic performance quantified by the concordance statistics for age‐ and sex‐adjusted models based on hs‐cTnT, right ventricular ejection fraction, and peak oxygen uptake predicted were comparable: 0.71% (95% CI, 0.61–0.82), 0.72% (95% CI, 0.59–0.84), and 0.71% (95% CI, 0.59–0.83), respectively. Conclusions Hs‐cTnT concentration was significantly correlated with right ventricular ejection fraction and right ventricular end‐systolic volume index in patients with a systemic right ventricle. The prognostic accuracy of hs‐cTnT was comparable to that of right ventricular ejection fraction and peak oxygen uptake predicted. ABSTRACTRotavirus (RV) replication takes place in the viroplasms, cytosolic inclusions that allow the synthesis of virus genome segments and their encapsidation in the core shell, followed by the addition of the second layer of the virion. The viroplasms are composed of several viral proteins, including NSP5, which serves as the main building block. Microtubules, lipid droplets, and miRNA-7 are among the host components recruited in viroplasms. We investigated the interaction between RV proteins and host components of the viroplasms by performing a pull-down assay of lysates from RV-infected cells expressing NSP5-BiolD2. Subsequent tandem mass spectrometry identified all eight subunits of the tailless complex polypeptide I ring complex (TRiC), a cellular chaperonin responsible for folding at least 10% of the cytosolic proteins. Our confirmed findings reveal that TRiC is brought into viroplasms and wraps around newly formed double-layered particles. Chemical inhibition of TRiC and silencing of its subunits drastically reduced virus progeny production. Through direct RNA sequencing, we show that TRiC is critical for RV replication by controlling dsRNA genome segment synthesis, particularly negative-sense single-stranded RNA. Importantly, cryo-electron microscopy analysis shows that TRiC inhibition results in defective virus particles lacking genome segments and polymerase complex (VP1/VP3). Moreover, TRiC associates with VP2 and NSP5 but not with VP1. Also, VP2 is shown to be essential for recruiting TRiC in viroplasms and preserving their globular morphology. This study highlights the essential role of TRiC in viroplasm formation and in facilitating virion assembly during the RV life cycle.IMPORTANCEThe replication of rotavirus takes place in cytosolic inclusions termed viroplasms. In these inclusions, the distinct 11 double-stranded RNA genome segments are co-packaged to complete a genome in newly generated virus particles. In this study, we show for the first time that the tailless complex polypeptide I ring complex (TRiC), a cellular chaperonin responsible for the folding of at least 10% of the cytosolic proteins, is a component of viroplasms and is required for the synthesis of the viral negative-sense single-stranded RNA. Specifically, TRiC associates with NSP5 and VP2, the cofactor involved in RNA replication. Our study adds a new component to the current model of rotavirus replication, where TRiC is recruited to viroplasms to assist replication.

We are a group of archaeologists, anthropologists, curators and geneticists representing diverse global communities and 31 countries. All of us met in a virtual workshop dedicated to ethics in ancient DNA research held in November 2020. There was widespread agreement that globally applicable ethical guidelines are needed, but that recent recommendations grounded in discussion about research on human remains from North America are not always generalizable worldwide. Here we propose the following globally applicable guidelines, taking into consideration diverse contexts. These hold that: (1) researchers must ensure that all regulations were followed in the places where they work and from which the human remains derived; (2) researchers must prepare a detailed plan prior to beginning any study; (3) researchers must minimize damage to human remains; (4) researchers must ensure that data are made available following publication to allow critical re-examination of scientific findings; and (5) researchers must engage with other stakeholders from the beginning of a study and ensure respect and sensitivity to stakeholder perspectives. We commit to adhering to these guidelines and expect they will promote a high ethical standard in DNA research on human remains going forward.
