A fundamental problem in decentralized networked systems is to coordinate actions of different agents so that they reach a state of agreement. In such applications, it is additionally desirable that the actions at various nodes may not be anticipated by malicious eavesdroppers. Motivated by this, we investigate the problem of secure multi-terminal strong coordination aided by a multiple-access wiretap channel. In this setup, independent and identically distributed copies of correlated sources are observed by two transmitters who encode the channel inputs to the MAC-WT. The legitimate receiver observing the channel output and side information correlated with the sources must produce approximately i.i.d. copies of an output variable jointly distributed with the sources. Furthermore, we demand that an external eavesdropper learns essentially nothin g about the sources and the simulated output sequence by observing its own MAC-WT output. This setting is aided by the presence of independent pairwise shared randomness between each encoder and the legitimate decoder, that is unavailable to the eavesdropper. We derive an achievable rate region based on a combination of coordination coding and wiretap coding, along with an outer bound. The inner bound is shown to be tight and a complete characterization is derived for the special case when the sources are conditionally independent given the decoder side information and the legitimate channel is composed of deterministic links. Further, we also analyze a more general scenario with possible encoder cooperation, where one of the encoders can non-causally crib from the other encoders input, for which an achievable rate region is proposed. We present a unified quantum-classical framework for addressing NP-complete constrained combinatorial optimization problems, generalizing the recently proposed Quantum Conic Programming (QCP) approach. Accordingly, it inherits many favorable properties of the original proposal such as mitigation of the effects of barren plateaus and avoidance of NP-hard parameter optimization. By collecting the entire classical feasibility structure in a single constraint, we enlarge QCP's scope to arbitrary hard-constrained problems. Yet, we prove that the additional restriction is mild enough to still allow for an efficient parameter optimization via the formulation of a generalized eigenvalue problem (GEP) of adaptable dimension. Our rigorous proof further fills some apparent gaps in prior derivations of GEPs from parameter optimization problems. We further detail a measurement protocol for formulating the classical parameter optimization that does not require us to implement any (time evolution with a) problem-specific objective Hamiltonian or a quantum feasibility oracle. Lastly, we prove that, even under the influence of noise, QCP's parameterized ansatz class always captures the optimum attainable within its generated subcone. We study agents acting in an unknown environment where the agent's goal is to find a robust policy. We consider robust policies as policies that achieve high cumulative rewards for all possible environments. To this end, we consider agents minimizing the maximum regret over different environment parameters, leading to the study of minimax regret. This research focuses on deriving information-theoretic bounds for minimax regret in Markov Decision Processes (MDPs) with a finite time horizon. Building on concepts from supervised learning, such as minimum excess risk (MER) and minimax excess risk, we use recent bounds on the Bayesian regret to derive minimax regret bounds. Specifically, we establish minimax theorems and use bounds on the Bayesian regret to perform minimax regret analysis using these minimax theorems. Our contributions include defining a suitable minimax regret in the context of MDPs, finding information-theoretic bounds for it, and applying these bounds in various scenarios.

We use NIRSpec/MSA spectroscopy and NIRCam imaging to study a sample of 18 massive ($\log\; M_{*}/M_{\odot} \gt 10\;$dex), central quiescent galaxies at $2\leq z \leq 5$ in the GOODS fields, to investigate their number density, star-formation histories, quenching timescales, and incidence of AGN. The depth of our data reaches $\log M_*/M_\odot \approx 9\;$dex, yet the least-massive central quiescent galaxy found has $\log M_*/M_\odot \gt 10\;$dex, suggesting that quenching is regulated by a physical quantity that scales with $M_*$. With spectroscopy as benchmark, we assess the completeness and purity of photometric samples, finding number densities 10 times higher than predicted by galaxy formation models, confirming earlier photometric studies. We compare our number densities to predictions from FLAMINGO, the largest-box full-hydro simulation suite to date. We rule out cosmic variance at the 3-$\sigma$ level, providing spectroscopic confirmation that galaxy formation models do not match observations at $z>3$. Using FLAMINGO, we find that the vast majority of quiescent galaxies' stars formed in situ, with these galaxies not having undergone multiple major dry mergers. This is in agreement with the compact observed size of these systems and suggests that major mergers are not a viable channel for quenching most massive galaxies. Several of our observed galaxies are particularly old, with four galaxies displaying 4000-\r{A} breaks; full-spectrum fitting infers formation and quenching redshifts of $z\geq8$ and $z\geq6$. Using all available AGN tracers, we find that 8 massive quiescent galaxies host AGN, including in old systems. Free electrons are a widespread and universal source of electromagnetic fields. The past decades witnessed ever-growing control over many aspects of electron-generated radiation, from the incoherent emission produced by X-ray tubes to the exceptional brilliance of free-electron lasers. Reduced to the elementary process of quantized energy exchange between individual electrons and the electromagnetic field, electron beams may facilitate future sources of tunable quantum light. However, the quantum features of such radiation are tied to the correlation of the particles, calling for the joint electronic and photonic state to be explored for further applications. Here, we demonstrate the coherent parametric generation of non-classical states of light by free electrons. We show that the quantized electron energy loss heralds the number of photons generated in a dielectric waveguide. In Hanbury-Brown-Twiss measurements, an electron-heralded single-photon state is revealed via antibunching intensity correlations, while two-quantum energy losses of individual electrons yield pronounced two-photon coincidences. The approach facilitates the tailored preparation of higher-number Fock and other optical quantum states based on controlled interactions with free-electron beams.

The motional sideband asymmetry of a mechanical oscillator interacting with a laser field can be observed when approaching the quantum ground state, where the zero-point energy of the mechanical oscillator becomes a sizable contribution to its motion. In the context of quantum optomechanics, it allows, in principle, calibration-free inference of the thermal equilibrium of a macroscopic mechanical resonator with its optical bath. At room temperature, this phenomenon has been observed in pioneering experiments using levitated nanoparticles. Measuring this effect with solid-state mechanical resonators has been compounded by thermal intermodulation noise, mirror frequency noise and low quantum cooperativity. Here, we sideband-cool a membrane-in-the-middle system close to the quantum ground state from room temperature, and observe motional sideband asymmetry in a dual-homodyne measurement. Sideband thermometry yields a minimum phonon occupancy of $\bar{n}_{eff}=9.5$. Our work provides insights into nonlinear optomechanical dynamics at room temperature and facilitates accessible optomechanical quantum technologies without the need for complex feedback control and cryogenic cooling.

We study the continuous vector-valued Witsenhausen counterexample through the lens of empirical coordination coding. We characterize the region of achievable pairs of costs in three scenarios: (i) causal encoding and causal decoding, (ii) causal encoding and causal decoding with channel feedback, and (iii) causal encoding and noncausal decoding with channel feedback. In these vector-valued versions of the problem, the optimal coding schemes must rely on a time-sharing strategy, since the region of achievable pairs of costs might not be convex in the scalar version of the problem. In this study, we investigate a vector-valued Witsenhausen model where the second decision maker (DM) acquires a vector of observations before selecting a vector of estimations. Here, the first DM acts causally whereas the second DM estimates non-causally. When the vector length grows, we characterize, via a single-letter expression, the optimal trade-off between the power cost at the first DM and the estimation cost at the second DM. In this paper, we show that the best linear scheme is achieved by using the time-sharing method between two affine strategies, which coincides with the convex envelope of the solution of Witsenhausen in 1968. Here also, Witsenhausen's two-point strategy and the scheme of Grover and Sahai in 2010 where both devices operate non-causally, outperform our best linear scheme. Therefore, gains obtained with block-coding schemes are only attainable if all DMs operate non-causally.

Frequency-agile lasers that can simultaneously feature low noise characteristics as well as fast mode hop-free frequency tuning are keystone components for applications ranging from frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) LiDAR, to coherent optical communication and gas sensing. The hybrid integration of III-V gain media with low-loss photonic integrated circuits (PICs) has recently enabled integrated lasers with faster tuning and lower phase noise than the best legacy systems, including fiber lasers. In addition, lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) PICs have enabled to exploit the Pockels effect to demonstrate self-injection locked hybrid lasers with tuning rates reaching peta-hertz per second. However, Pockels-tunable laser archetypes relying on high-Q optical microresonators have thus far only achieved limited output powers, are difficult to operate and stabilize due to the dynamics of self-injection locking, and require many analog control parameters. Here, we overcome this challenge by leveraging an extended distributed Bragg reflector (E-DBR) architecture to demonstrate a simple and turn-key operable frequency-agile Pockels laser that can be controlled with single analog operation and modulation inputs. Our laser supports a continuous mode hop-free tuning range of over 10 GHz with good linearity and flat actuation bandwidth up to 10 MHz, while achieving over 15 mW in-fiber output power at 1545 nm and kHz-level intrinsic linewidth, a combination unmet by legacy bulk lasers. This hybrid laser design combines an inexpensive reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA) with an electro-optic DBR PIC manufactured at wafer-scale on a LNOI platform. We showcase the performance and flexibility of this laser in proof-of-concept coherent optical ranging (FMCW LiDAR) demonstration, achieving a 4 cm distance resolution and in a hydrogen cyanide spectroscopy experiment., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

While JWST has observed galaxies assembling as early as $z\sim14$, evidence of galaxies with significant old stellar populations in the Epoch of Reionisation (EoR) -- the descendants of these earliest galaxies -- are few and far between. Bursty star-formation histories (SFHs) have been invoked to explain the detectability of the earliest UV-bright galaxies, but also to interpret galaxies showing Balmer breaks without nebular emission lines. We present the first spectroscopic evidence of a $z\sim7.9$ galaxy, A2744-YD4, which shows a Balmer break and emission lines, indicating the presence of both a mature and young stellar population. The spectrum of A2744-YD4 shows peculiar emission line ratios suggesting a relatively low ionisation parameter and high gas-phase metallicity. A median stack of galaxies with similar emission line ratios reveals a clear Balmer break in their stacked spectrum. This suggests that a mature stellar population ($\sim 80$ Myr old) has produced a chemically enriched, disrupted interstellar medium. Based on SED-fitting and comparison to simulations, we conclude that the observed young stellar population is in fact the result of a rejuvenation event following a lull in star formation lasting $\sim 20$ Myr, making A2744-YD4 and our stack the first spectroscopic confirmation of galaxies that have rejuvenated following a mini-quenched phase. These rejuvenating galaxies appear to be in an exceptional evolutionary moment where they can be identified. Our analysis shows that a young stellar population of just $\sim 30 \%$ of the total stellar mass would erase the Balmer break. Hence, 'outshining' through bursty SFHs of galaxies in the early Universe is likely plaguing attempts to measure their stellar ages and masses accurately., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures, 1 table. Collective phenomena arise from interactions within complex systems, leading to behaviors absent in individual components. Observing quantum collective phenomena with macroscopic mechanical oscillators has been impeded by the stringent requirement that oscillators be identical. Here, we demonstrate the quantum regime for collective motion of $N=6$ mechanical oscillators, a hexamer, in a superconducting circuit optomechanical platform. By increasing the optomechanical couplings, the system transitions from individual to collective motion, characterized by a $\sqrt{N}$ enhancement of cavity-collective mode coupling, akin to super-radiance of atomic ensembles. Using sideband cooling, we prepare the collective mode in the quantum ground state and measure its quantum sideband asymmetry, with zero-point motion distributed across distant oscillators. This regime of optomechanics opens avenues for studying multi-partite entanglement, with potential advances in quantum metrology.

This paper explores the implications of guaranteeing privacy by imposing a lower bound on the information density between the private and the public data. We introduce an operationally meaningful privacy measure called pointwise maximal cost (PMC) and demonstrate that imposing an upper bound on PMC is equivalent to enforcing a lower bound on the information density. PMC quantifies the information leakage about a secret to adversaries who aim to minimize non-negative cost functions after observing the outcome of a privacy mechanism. When restricted to finite alphabets, PMC can equivalently be defined as the information leakage to adversaries aiming to minimize the probability of incorrectly guessing randomized functions of the secret. We study the properties of PMC and apply it to standard privacy mechanisms to demonstrate its practical relevance. Through a detailed examination, we connect PMC with other privacy measures that impose upper or lower bounds on the information density. Our results highlight that lower bounding the information density is a more stringent requirement than upper bounding it. Overall, our work significantly bridges the gaps in understanding the relationships between various privacy frameworks and provides insights for selecting a suitable framework for a given application.

Integrated frequency comb generators based on Kerr parametric oscillation have led to chip-scale, gigahertz-spaced combs with new applications spanning hyperscale telecommunications, low-noise microwave synthesis, LiDAR, and astrophysical spectrometer calibration. Recent progress in lithium niobate (LN) photonic integrated circuits (PICs) has resulted in chip-scale electro-optic (EO) frequency combs, offering precise comb-line positioning and simple operation without relying on the formation of dissipative Kerr solitons. However, current integrated EO combs face limited spectral coverage due to the large microwave power required to drive the non-resonant capacitive electrodes and the strong intrinsic birefringence of Lithium Niobate. Here, we overcome both challenges with an integrated triply resonant architecture, combining monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMICs) with PICs based on the recently emerged thin-film lithium tantalate. With resonantly enhanced EO interaction and reduced birefringence in Lithium Tantalate, we achieve a four-fold comb span extension and a 16-fold power reduction compared to the conventional non-resonant microwave design. Driven by a hybrid-integrated laser diode, the comb spans over 450nm (60THz) with >2000 lines, and the generator fits within a compact 1cm^2 footprint. We additionally observe that the strong EO coupling leads to an increased comb existence range approaching the full free spectral range of the optical microresonator. The ultra-broadband comb generator, combined with detuning-agnostic operation, could advance chip-scale spectrometry and ultra-low-noise millimeter wave synthesis and unlock octave-spanning EO combs. Silicon nitride (Si$_3$N$_4$) photonic integrated circuits (PICs) have shown low linear loss, negligible nonlinear loss, and high power handling over traditional silicon photonics. To achieve high-density photonic integration and high effective nonlinearity through tight optical confinement, thick stoichiometric Si$_3$N$_4$ films are indispensable. However, when using low-pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) to achieve high optical material transparency, Si$_3$N$_4$ films exhibit large tensile stress on the order of GPa. Methods for crack prevention are therefore essential. The photonic Damascene process has addressed this issue, attaining record low loss Si$_3$N$_4$ PICs, but it lacks control of the waveguide height. Conversely, precise waveguide dimension and ultra-low loss have been achieved with subtractive processing, but this method is not compatible with mass production due to the use of electron beam lithography. To date, an outstanding challenge is to attain both lithographic precision and ultra-low loss in high confinement Si$_3$N$_4$ PICs that are compatible with large-scale foundry manufacturing. Here, we present a single-step deposited, DUV-based subtractive method for producing wafer-scale ultra-low loss Si$_3$N$_4$ PICs that harmonize these necessities. By employing deep etching of densely distributed, interconnected trenches into the substrate, we effectively mitigate the tensile stress in the Si$_3$N$_4$ layer, enabling direct deposition of thick films without cracking and substantially prolonged storage duration. Lastly, we identify ultraviolet (UV) radiation-induced damage that can be remedied through rapid thermal annealing. JWST is discovering increasing numbers of quiescent galaxies 1--2 billion years after the Big Bang, whose redshift, high mass, and old stellar ages indicate that their formation and quenching were surprisingly rapid. This fast-paced evolution seems to require that feedback from AGN (active galactic nuclei) be faster and/or more efficient than previously expected \citep{Xie24}. We present deep ALMA observations of cold molecular gas (the fuel for star formation) in a massive, fast-rotating, post-starburst galaxy at $z=3.064$. This galaxy hosts an AGN, driving neutral-gas outflows with a mass-outflow rate of $60\pm20$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$, and has a star-formation rate of $<5.6$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$. Our data reveal this system to be the most distant gas-poor galaxy confirmed with direct CO observations (molecular-gas mass $< 10^{9.1}$ M$_{\odot}$; <0.8 % of its stellar mass). Combining ALMA and JWST observations, we estimate the gas-consumption history of this galaxy, showing that it evolved with net zero gas inflow, i.e., gas consumption by star formation matches the amount of gas this galaxy is missing relative to star-forming galaxies. This could arise both from preventive feedback stopping further gas inflow, which would otherwise refuel star formation or, alternatively, from fine-tuned ejective feedback matching precisely gas inflows. Experimental control involves a lot of manual effort with non-trivial decisions for precise adjustments. Here, we study the automatic experimental alignment for coupling laser light into an optical fiber using reinforcement learning (RL). We face several real-world challenges, such as time-consuming training, partial observability, and noisy actions due to imprecision in the mirror steering motors. We show that we can overcome these challenges: To save time, we use a virtual testbed to tune our environment for dealing with partial observability and use relatively sample-efficient model-free RL algorithms like Soft Actor-Critic (SAC) or Truncated Quantile Critics (TQC). Furthermore, by fully training on the experiment, the agent learns directly to handle the noise present. In our extensive experimentation, we show that we are able to achieve 90% coupling, showcasing the effectiveness of our proposed approaches. We reach this efficiency, which is comparable to that of a human expert, without additional feedback loops despite the motors' inaccuracies. For journalists reporting from a totalitarian regime, whistleblowers and resistance fighters, the anonymous use of cloud services on the Internet can be vital for survival. The Tor network provides a free and widely used anonymization service for everyone. However, there are different approaches to distinguishing Tor from non-Tor encrypted network traffic, most recently only due to the (relative) frequencies of hex digits in a single encrypted payload packet. While conventional data traffic is usually encrypted once, but at least three times in the case of Tor due to the structure and principle of the Tor network, we have examined to what extent the number of encryptions contributes to being able to distinguish Tor from non-Tor encrypted data traffic., Comment: 5 pages

Recent decades have seen significant advancements in integrated photonics, driven by improvements in nanofabrication technology. This field has developed from integrated semiconductor lasers and low-loss waveguides to optical modulators, enabling the creation of sophisticated optical systems on a chip scale capable of performing complex functions like optical sensing, signal processing, and metrology. The tight confinement of optical modes in photonic waveguides further enhances the optical nonlinearity, leading to a variety of nonlinear optical phenomena such as optical frequency combs, second-harmonic generation, and supercontinuum generation. Active tuning of photonic circuits is crucial not only for offsetting variations caused by fabrication in large-scale integration, but also serves as a fundamental component in programmable photonic circuits. Piezoelectric actuation in photonic devices offers a low-power, high-speed solution and is essential in the design of future photonic circuits due to its compatibility with materials like Si and Si3N4, which do not exhibit electro-optic effects. Here, we provide a detailed review of the latest developments in piezoelectric tuning and modulation, by examining various piezoelectric materials, actuator designs tailored to specific applications, and the capabilities and limitations of current technologies. Additionally, we explore the extensive applications enabled by piezoelectric actuators, including tunable lasers, frequency combs, quantum transducers, and optical isolators. These innovative ways of managing photon propagation and frequency on-chip are expected to be highly sought after in the future advancements of advanced photonic chips for both classical and quantum optical information processing and computing.

We study a multi-task private semantic communication problem, in which an encoder has access to an information source arbitrarily correlated with some latent private data. A user has $L$ tasks with priorities. The encoder designs a message to be revealed which is called the semantic of the information source. Due to the privacy constraints the semantic can not be disclosed directly and the encoder adds noise to produce disclosed data. The goal is to design the disclosed data that maximizes the weighted sum of the utilities achieved by the user while satisfying a privacy constraint on the private data. In this work, we first consider a single-task scenario and design the added noise utilizing various methods including the extended versions of the Functional Representation Lemma, Strong Functional Representation Lemma, and separation technique. We then study the multi-task scenario and derive a simple design of the source semantics. We show that in the multi-task scenario the main problem can be divided into multiple parallel single-task problems.

We investigate how quantum information, encoded in a quantum field, evolves during the expansion of spacetime. Due to information loss across the horizon, a local observer experiences this evolution as a nonunitary quantum channel. We obtain this channel in the case of de Sitter spacetime by assuming the initial global state encodes a signal state via fluctuations of the Bunch-Davies vacuum. Notably, de Sitter evolution exhibits intriguing cloning properties, establishing a connection between the curvature of spacetime and the propagation of quantum information.

Optical amplification, crucial for modern communication and data center interconnects, primarily relies on erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) to enhance signals without distortion. While EDFAs were historically decisive for the introduction of dense wavelength-division multiplexing, they only cover a portion of the low-loss spectrum of optical fibers. Pioneering work on optical traveling-wave parametric amplifiers (TWPAs) utilizing intrinsic third-order optical nonlinearity has led to demonstrations of increased channel capacity and performance. TWPAs are unidirectional, offer high gain, and can reach the 3-dB quantum limit for phase-preserving amplifiers. Despite the use of highly nonlinear fibers or bulk waveguides, their power requirements and technical complexity have impeded adoption. In contrast, TWPAs based on photonic integrated circuits (PICs) offer the advantages of substantially increased mode confinement and optical nonlinearity but have been limited in bandwidth because of the trade-off with maintaining low propagation loss. We overcome this challenge by using low-loss gallium phosphide-on-silicon dioxide PICs and attain up to 35~dB of parametric gain with waveguides only a few centimeters long in a compact footprint of 0.25 square millimeters. Fiber-to-fiber net gain exceeding 10 dB across a bandwidth of approximately 140 nm is achieved, surpassing the gain window of a standard C-band EDFA. We furthermore demonstrate the capability to handle weak signals; input powers can range over six orders of magnitude while maintaining a low noise figure. We exploit these performance characteristics to amplify both optical frequency combs and coherent communication signals. This marks the first ultra-broadband, high-gain, continuous-wave amplification in a PIC, opening up new capabilities for next-generation optical communication, metrology, and sensing., Comment: 20 pages, 13 figures

We present the third data release of JADES, the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey, providing both imaging and spectroscopy in the two GOODS fields. Spectroscopy consists of medium-depth and deep NIRSpec/MSA spectra of 4,000 targets, covering the spectral range 0.6-5.3 $\mu$m and observed with both the low-dispersion prism (R=30-300) and all three medium-resolution gratings (R=500-1,500). We describe the observations, data reduction, sample selection, and target allocation. We measured 2,375 redshifts (2,053 from multiple emission lines); our targets span the range from z=0.5 up to z=13, including 404 at z>5. The data release includes 2-d and 1-d fully reduced spectra, with slit-loss corrections and background subtraction optimized for point sources. We also provide redshifts and S/N>5 emission-line flux catalogs for the prism and grating spectra, and concise guidelines on how to use these data products. Alongside spectroscopy, we are also publishing fully calibrated NIRCam imaging, which enables studying the JADES sample with the combined power of imaging and spectroscopy. Together, these data provide the largest statistical sample to date to characterize the properties of galaxy populations in the first billion years after the Big Bang., Comment: 41 pages, 26 figures, 10 tables. Frequency metrology lies at the heart of precision measurement. Optical frequency combs provide a coherent link uniting the microwave and optical domains in the electromagnetic spectrum, with profound implications in timekeeping, sensing and spectroscopy, fundamental physics tests, exoplanet search, and light detection and ranging. Here, we extend this frequency link to free electrons by coherent modulation of the electron phase by a continuous-wave laser locked to a fully stabilized optical frequency comb. Microwave frequency standards are transferred to the optical domain via the frequency comb, and are further imprinted in the electron spectrum by optically modulating the electron phase with a photonic chip-based microresonator. As a proof-of-concept demonstration, we apply this frequency link in the calibration of an electron spectrometer, and use the electron spectrum to measure the optical frequency. Our work bridges frequency domains differed by a factor of $\sim10^{13}$ and carried by different physical objects, establishes a spectroscopic connection between electromagnetic waves and free-electron matter waves, and has direct ramifications in ultrahigh-precision electron spectroscopy.

This paper studies the Bayesian regret of a variant of the Thompson-Sampling algorithm for bandit problems. It builds upon the information-theoretic framework of [Russo and Van Roy, 2015] and, more specifically, on the rate-distortion analysis from [Dong and Van Roy, 2020], where they proved a bound with regret rate of $O(d\sqrt{T \log(T)})$ for the $d$-dimensional linear bandit setting. We focus on bandit problems with a metric action space and, using a chaining argument, we establish new bounds that depend on the metric entropy of the action space for a variant of Thompson-Sampling. Under suitable continuity assumption of the rewards, our bound offers a tight rate of $O(d\sqrt{T})$ for $d$-dimensional linear bandit problems., Comment: 15 pages: 8 of main text and 7 of appendices

We examine the relationship between privacy metrics that utilize information density to measure information leakage between a private and a disclosed random variable. Firstly, we prove that bounding the information density from above or below in turn implies a lower or upper bound on the information density, respectively. Using this result, we establish new relationships between local information privacy, asymmetric local information privacy, pointwise maximal leakage and local differential privacy. We further provide applications of these relations to privacy mechanism design. Furthermore, we provide statements showing the equivalence between a lower bound on information density and risk-averse adversaries. More specifically, we prove an equivalence between a guessing framework and a cost-function framework that result in the desired lower bound on the information density.

Extreme emission line galaxies (EELGs) exhibit large equivalent widths (EW) in their rest-optical emission lines ([OIII]$\lambda5007$ or H$\alpha$ rest-frame EW$ > 750\r{A}$) which can be tied to a recent upturn in star formation rate, due to the sensitivity of the nebular line emission and the rest-optical continuum to young ($<10$Myr) and evolved stellar populations, respectively. By studying a sample of 85 star forming galaxies (SFGs), spanning the redshift and magnitude interval $3 $ M$_{UV}>-21$, in the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES) with NIRSpec/prism spectroscopy, we determine that SFGs initiate an EELG phase when entering a significant burst of star formation, with the highest EWs observed in EELGs with the youngest luminosity-weighted ages ($<5$ Myr old) and the highest burst intensity (those with the greatest excess between their current and long-term average SFR). We spectroscopically confirm that a greater proportion of SFGs are in an EELG phase at high redshift in our UV-selected sample ($61\pm4\%$ in our $z>5.7$ high-redshift bin, compared to $23^{+4}_{-1}\%$ in our lowest-redshift bin $35.7$ have observed Lyman-$\alpha$ emission, potentially lying within large ionised regions. The high detection rate of Lyman-$\alpha$ emitters in our EELG selection suggests that the physical conditions associated with entering an EELG phase also promote the escape of Lyman-$\alpha$ photons., Comment: 34 pages, 25 figures

We investigate the Witsenhausen counterexample in a continuous vector-valued context with a causal encoder and noncausal decoder. Our main result is the optimal single-letter condition that characterizes the set of achievable Witsenhausen power costs and estimation costs, leveraging a modified weak typicality approach. In particular, we accommodate our power analysis to the causal encoder constraint, and provide an improved distortion error analysis for the challenging estimation of the interim state. We present a quantum-classical algorithm to study the dynamics of the Rohksar-Kivelson plaquette ladder on NISQ devices. We show that complexity is largely reduced using gauge invariance, additional symmetries, and a crucial property associated to how plaquettes are blocked against ring-exchange in the ladder geometry. This allows for an efficient simulation of sizable plaquette ladders with a small number of qubits, well suited for the capabilities of present NISQ devices. We illustrate the procedure for ladders with simulation of up to $8$ plaquettes in an IBM-Q machine, employing scaled quantum gates.

The Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) algorithm, as applied to finding the ground state of a Hamiltonian, is particularly well-suited for deployment on noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) devices. Here we utilize the VQE algorithm with a quantum circuit ansatz inspired by the Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) algorithm. To ameliorate the impact of realistic noise on the performance of the method we employ zero-noise extrapolation. We find that, with realistic error rates, our DMRG-VQE hybrid algorithm delivers good results for strongly correlated systems. We illustrate our approach with the Heisenberg model on a Kagome lattice patch and demonstrate that DMRG-VQE hybrid methods can locate, and faithfully represent the physics of, the ground state of such systems. Moreover, the parameterized ansatz circuit used in this work is low-depth and requires a reasonably small number of parameters, so is efficient for NISQ devices.

We present the UV-to-NIR size evolution of a sample of 161 quiescent galaxies (QGs) with $M_*>10^{10}M_\odot$ over $0.510^{10.6}M_\odot$. To constrain the physical mechanisms driving the apparent size evolution, we study the relationship between $R_e$ and the formation redshift ($z_{form}$) of QGs. For lower-mass QGs, this relationship is broadly consistent with $R_e\sim(1+z_{form})^{-1}$, in line with the expectation of the progenitor effect. For higher-mass QGs, the relationship between $R_e$ and $z_{form}$ depends on stellar age. Older QGs have a steeper relationship between $R_e$ and $z_{form}$ than that expected from the progenitor effect alone, suggesting that mergers and/or post-quenching continuous gas accretion drive additional size growth in very massive systems. We find that the $z>3$ QGs in our sample are very compact, with mass surface densities $\Sigma_e\gtrsim10^{10} M_\odot/\rm{kpc}^2$, and their $R_e$ are possibly even smaller than anticipated from the size evolution measured for lower-redshift QGs. Finally, we take a close look at the structure of GS-9209, one of the earliest confirmed massive QGs at $z_{spec}\sim4.7$. From UV to NIR, GS-9209 becomes increasingly compact, and its light profile becomes more spheroidal, showing that the color gradient is already present in this earliest massive QG., Comment: 28 pages, 19 figures, submitted to ApJ

The advances in novel low-loss "on insulator" integrated photonics platforms beyond silicon, such as thin-film LiNbO3, LiTaO3, GaP and BaTiO3 have demonstrated major potential across a wide range of applications, due to their unique electro-optical or nonlinear optical properties. This has heralded novel devices, ranging from low-voltage and high-speed modulators to parametric amplifiers. For such photonic integrated circuits, a low-loss SiO2 cladding layer is a key element, serving as a passivation layer for the waveguides and enabling efficient fiber-to-chip coupling. However, numerous novel ferroelectric or III-V "on insulator" platforms have low tolerances for process temperature. This prohibits using high-temperature anneals to remove hydrogen, a common impurity that is inherent to ordinary chemical vapor deposited SiO2 and causes significant optical loss in the near infrared. Here, we satisfy the dichotomy of a low-loss wafer scale manufactured SiO2 cladding and low processing temperature. Inspired by the manufacturing of optical fibers, we introduce a hydrogen-free, low-loss SiO2 cladding that is deposited at low temperatures (300 degrees Celsius) by using SiCl4 and O2 as precursors in inductively coupled plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (ICPCVD). By replacing hydrogenous silicon precursors (e.g. SiH4) with SiCl4, the deposited film is inherently free from residual hydrogen. The process temperature is compatible with the "on insulator" platforms and CMOS electronic integrated circuits. We demonstrate a wide low-loss window that covers all telecommunication bands from 1260 nm to 1625 nm. We achieve a < 2.5 dB/m waveguide loss at 1550 nm, comparable with 1200 degree Celsius annealed films. Our SiCl4 process provides a key future cladding for all recently emerged "on-insulator" photonics platforms, that is low cost, scalable in manufacturing, and directly foundry compatible., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

We present the identification of 42 narrow-line active galactic nuclei (type-2 AGN) candidates in the two deepest observations of the JADES spectroscopic survey with JWST/NIRSpec. The spectral coverage and the depth of our observations allow us to select narrow-line AGNs based on both rest-frame optical and UV emission lines up to z=10. Due to the metallicity decrease of galaxies, at $z>3$ the standard optical diagnostic diagrams (N2-BPT or S2-VO87) become unable to distinguish many AGN from other sources of photoionisation. Therefore, we also use high ionisation lines, such as HeII$\lambda$4686, HeII$\lambda$1640, NeIV$\lambda$2422, NeV$\lambda$3420, and NV$\lambda$1240, also in combination with other UV transitions, to trace the presence of AGN. Out of a parent sample of 209 galaxies, we identify 42 type-2 AGN (although 10 of them are tentative), giving a fraction of galaxies in JADES hosting type-2 AGN of about $20\pm3$\%, which does not evolve significantly in the redshift range between 2 and 10. The selected type-2 AGN have estimated bolometric luminosities of $10^{41.3-44.9}$ erg s$^{-1}$ and host-galaxy stellar masses of $10^{7.2-9.3}$ M$_{\odot}$. The star formation rates of the selected AGN host galaxies are consistent with those of the star-forming main sequence. The AGN host galaxies at z=4-6 contribute $\sim$8-30 \% to the UV luminosity function, slightly increasing with UV luminosity., Comment: 23 pages 13 figures

Finding the emergence of the first generation of metals in the early Universe, and identifying their origin, are some of the most important goals of modern astrophysics. We present deep JWST/NIRSpec spectroscopy of GS-z12, a galaxy at z=12.5, in which we report the detection of C III]${\lambda}{\lambda}$1907,1909 nebular emission. This is the most distant detection of a metal transition and the most distant redshift determination via emission lines. In addition, we report tentative detections of [O II]${\lambda}{\lambda}$3726,3729 and [Ne III]${\lambda}$3869, and possibly O III]${\lambda}{\lambda}$1661,1666. By using the accurate redshift from C III], we can model the Ly${\alpha}$ drop to reliably measure an absorbing column density of hydrogen of $N_{HI} \approx 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$ - too high for an IGM origin and implying abundant ISM in GS-z12 or CGM around it. We infer a lower limit for the neutral gas mass of about $10^7$ MSun which, compared with a stellar mass of $\approx4 \times 10^7$ MSun inferred from the continuum fitting, implies a gas fraction higher than about 0.1-0.5. We derive a solar or even super-solar carbon-to-oxygen ratio, tentatively [C/O]>0.15. This is higher than the C/O measured in galaxies discovered by JWST at z=6-9, and higher than the C/O arising from Type-II supernovae enrichment, while AGB stars cannot contribute to carbon enrichment at these early epochs and low metallicities. Such a high C/O in a galaxy observed 350 Myr after the Big Bang may be explained by the yields of extremely metal poor stars, and may even be the heritage of the first generation of supernovae from Population III progenitors., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures. In recent years, strong expectations have been raised for the possible power of quantum computing for solving difficult optimization problems, based on theoretical, asymptotic worst-case bounds. Can we expect this to have consequences for Linear and Integer Programming when solving instances of practically relevant size, a fundamental goal of Mathematical Programming, Operations Research and Algorithm Engineering? Answering this question faces a crucial impediment: The lack of sufficiently large quantum platforms prevents performing real-world tests for comparison with classical methods. In this paper, we present a quantum analog for classical runtime analysis when solving real-world instances of important optimization problems. To this end, we measure the expected practical performance of quantum computers by analyzing the expected gate complexity of a quantum algorithm. The lack of practical quantum platforms for experimental comparison is addressed by hybrid benchmarking, in which the algorithm is performed on a classical system, logging the expected cost of the various subroutines that are employed by the quantum versions. In particular, we provide an analysis of quantum methods for Linear Programming, for which recent work has provided asymptotic speedup through quantum subroutines for the Simplex method. We show that a practical quantum advantage for realistic problem sizes would require quantum gate operation times that are considerably below current physical limitations., Comment: 39 pages, 8 figures

A private compression design problem is studied, where an encoder observes useful data $Y$, wishes to compress it using variable length code and communicates it through an unsecured channel. Since $Y$ is correlated with private data $X$, the encoder uses a private compression mechanism to design encoded message $\cal C$ and sends it over the channel. An adversary is assumed to have access to the output of the encoder, i.e., $\cal C$, and tries to estimate $X$. Furthermore, it is assumed that both encoder and decoder have access to a shared secret key $W$. In this work, we generalize the perfect privacy (secrecy) assumption and consider a non-zero leakage between the private data $X$ and encoded message $\cal C$. The design goal is to encode message $\cal C$ with minimum possible average length that satisfies non-perfect privacy constraints. We find upper and lower bounds on the average length of the encoded message using different privacy metrics and study them in special cases. For the achievability we use two-part construction coding and extended versions of Functional Representation Lemma. We summarize the properties and initial data release of the JADES Origins Field (JOF), which will soon be the deepest imaging field yet observed with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). This field falls within the GOODS-S region about 8' south-west of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF), where it was formed initially in Cycle 1 as a parallel field of HUDF spectroscopic observations within the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES). This imaging will be greatly extended in Cycle 2 program 3215, which will observe the JOF for 5 days in six medium-band filters, seeking robust candidates for z>15 galaxies. This program will also include ultra-deep parallel NIRSpec spectroscopy (up to 104 hours on-source, summing over the dispersion modes) on the HUDF. Cycle 3 observations from program 4540 will add 20 hours of NIRCam slitless spectroscopy to the JOF. With these three campaigns, the JOF will be observed for 380 open-shutter hours with NIRCam using 15 imaging filters and 2 grism bandpasses. Further, parts of the JOF have deep 43 hr MIRI observations in F770W. Taken together, the JOF will soon be one of the most compelling deep fields available with JWST and a powerful window into the early Universe. Here we present two novel contributions for achieving quantum advantage in solving difficult optimisation problems, both in theory and foreseeable practice. (1) We introduce the "Quantum Tree Generator", an approach to generate in superposition all feasible solutions of a given instance, yielding together with amplitude amplification the optimal solutions for 0-1 knapsack problems. The QTG offers massive memory savings and enables competitive runtimes compared to the classical state-of-the-art knapsack solvers (such as COMBO, Gurobi, CP-SAT, Greedy) already for instances involving as few as 100 variables. (2) By introducing a new runtime calculation technique that exploits logging data from the classical solver COMBO, we can predict the runtime of our method way beyond the range of existing quantum platforms and simulators, for various benchmark instances with up to 600 variables. Combining both of these innovations, we demonstrate the QTG's potential practical quantum advantage for large-scale problems, indicating an effective approach for combinatorial optimisation problems., Comment: 6+13 pages, 11 figures

Optimisation via parameterised quantum circuits is the prevalent technique of near-term quantum algorithms. However, the omnipresent phenomenon of barren plateaus - parameter regions with vanishing gradients - sets a persistent hurdle that drastically diminishes its success in practice. In this work, we introduce an approach - based on non-unitary operations - that favours jumps out of a barren plateau into a fertile valley. These operations are constructed from conic extensions of parameterised unitary quantum circuits, relying on mid-circuit measurements and a small ancilla system. We further reduce the problem of finding optimal jump directions to a low-dimensional generalised eigenvalue problem. As a proof of concept we incorporate jumps within state-of-the-art implementations of the Quantum Approximate Optimisation Algorithm (QAOA). We demonstrate the extensions' effectiveness on QAOA through extensive simulations, showcasing robustness against barren plateaus and highly improved sampling probabilities of optimal solutions., Comment: 6+2 pages, 3 figures
