Thirdhand smoke (THS) is the persistent and toxic residue from tobacco smoke in indoor environments. A comprehensive understanding of the chemical constituents of THS is necessary to assess the risks of long-term exposure and to establish reliable THS tracers. The objective of this study was to investigate compounds associated with THS through nontargeted analysis (NTA) of settled house dust samples from smokers' and non-smokers' homes, using comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled to time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC×GC/TOF-MS). Compounds that were either only present in dust from smokers' homes or that had significantly larger abundance than in non-smokers' homes were termed qualified compounds. We identified 140 qualified compounds, and of these, 42 compounds were tentatively identified by searching matching mass spectra in NIST electron impact (EI) mass spectral library including 20 compounds confirmed with their authentic standards. BackgroundTobacco smoke adversely affects the prognosis of adult cancers including myeloid leukemia, but less is known in children.MethodsWe evaluated whether pre- and postnatal exposures to tobacco smoke decrease 5-year survival of 1,235 childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and 188 childhood acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cases derived from a population-based case-control study in California. Cases were diagnosed between 1995 and 2015 (median follow-up time of 13.2 years overall). We obtained data on tobacco smoking (before conception, during pregnancy, after birth), parental education and income, clinical features, and vital status through 2020. BackgroundTobacco smoke exposure (TSE) has inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects which may be associated with altered levels of inflammatory markers and pediatric illnesses.ObjectiveThe primary objective was to examine the associations of cotinine-confirmed and parent-reported child TSE patterns and discharge diagnoses with C-reactive protein (CRP), IL-8, and IL-10 in 0-11-year-old pediatric emergency department (PED) patients who lived with ≥ 1 smoker.MethodsSaliva samples were obtained from 115 children with a mean (SD) age of 3.5 (3.1) years during the PED visit (T0). Saliva was analyzed for cotinine, CRP, IL-8, and IL-10. Parents self-reported their children's TSE patterns; children's medical records were reviewed to identify and categorize discharge diagnoses. Linear regression models were utilized to find T0 associations of cotinine-confirmed and parent-reported child TSE patterns, and PED diagnoses with each inflammatory marker. All models were adjusted for child race/ethnicity, child sex, annual household income, and housing type. To inform the clinical practice guidelines' recommendations developed by the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology systematic reviews (SR) assessed using GRADE on the impact of environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) and active smoking on the risk of new‐onset asthma/recurrent wheezing (RW)/low lung function (LF), and on asthma‐related outcomes. Only longitudinal studies were included, almost all on combustion cigarettes, only one assessing e‐cigarettes and LF. According to the first SR (67 studies), prenatal ETS increases the risk of RW (moderate certainty evidence) and may increase the risk of new‐onset asthma and of low LF (low certainty evidence). Postnatal ETS increases the risk of new‐onset asthma and of RW (moderate certainty evidence) and may impact LF (low certainty evidence). Combined in utero and postnatal ETS may increase the risk of new‐onset asthma (low certainty evidence) and increases the risk of RW (moderate certainty evidence). Littering of cigarette butts is a major environmental challenge. In 2022, ~124 billion cigarette butts were littered in the United States. This litter may pose an environmental justice concern by disproportionately affecting human and environmental health in communities of color or communities of low socioeconomic status. However, the lack of data on the distribution and magnitude of cigarette butt littering prevents an environmental justice analysis and limits the ability to tackle this environmental challenge. We conducted an environmental justice assessment of tobacco product waste, specifically cigarette butts, through spatially-explicit, place-based estimates across the contiguous U.S. We built a bottom-up model by synthesizing census tract-level population and smoking prevalence, state-level cigarette consumption, and published littering data to assess the spatial pattern of cigarette consumption and littering, and its implications for environmental injustice in >71,600 U.S. census tracts. Further, we compared the model output to urbanicity (rural-urban commuting area) and Social-Environmental Risk (SER; CDC Environmental Justice Index). Cigarette butt density was not uniformly distributed across the U.S. and ranged from 0–45.5 butts/m2, with an area-weighted average of 0.019 ± 0.0005 butts/m2. Cigarette butt density was 96 times higher in metropolitan vs. rural areas. Cigarette butt density increased significantly with SER, with 5.6 times more littered cigarette butts, and a steeper response to population density, in census tracts with the highest SER vs. the lowest SER. These results demonstrate the relative influences of location, smoking prevalence, and population density, and show that cigarette butt littering is a potential environmental justice concern in the U.S. This study provides information that may help devise targeted strategies to reduce cigarette butt pollution and prevent disproportionate impacts. The spatial data layer with place-based cigarette consumption and butt density is a tool that can support municipal, state, and federal level policy work and future studies on associations among cigarette butt pollution and environmental health outcomes. Exposure to tobacco smoke (ETS) is one of the main risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Renalase is a protein that may play a role in the pathogenesis of CVD. The aim of the study was to assess the relationship between ETS and serum renalase concentration. A group of 109 patients was recruited for this study (49.7 ± 14.7 years). In accordance with the questionnaire, patients were divided into the following subgroups: subgroup A– declaring themselves active smokers (n = 36), subgroup B– declaring themselves non-smokers and exposed to environmental tobacco smoke (n = 35), subgroup C– declaring themselves non-smokers and not exposed to environmental tobacco smoke (n = 38). The same patients were divided based on cotinine concentration into the following subgroups: subgroup D– active smokers (n = 42), subgroup E– non-smokers exposed to environmental tobacco smoke (n = 66), and subgroup F– non-smokers not exposed to environmental tobacco smoke (n = 1). Serum cotinine concentration and serum renalase concentration were measured using ELISA tests. Serum renalase concentration was statistically significantly higher in subgroup C than in subgroups A and B and in subgroup E and F than in D. There was a negative correlation between serum cotinine concentration and serum renalase concentration (r = −0.41, p < 0.05). Regression analysis showed that higher BMI, higher diastolic blood pressure, coronary artery disease and higher serum cotinine concentration are independent risk factors of lower serum renalase concentration. The questionnaire method of assessing exposure to tobacco smoke was characterized by high sensitivity, but only moderate specificity, especially in terms of assessing environmental exposure to tobacco smoke. Household smoking is one of the main sources of environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) exposure for children, a population considered to be at high risk for associated negative health outcomes. Several studies evidenced the occurrence of early effects related to ETS exposure, including the development of the oxidative stress process. The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation between urinary levels of 8-oxo-7,8-dihydro-2-deoxyguanosine (8oxodGuo), a nucleic acid oxidation biomarker, and socio-demographic features and lifestyle factors in school children (aged 5–11 years). A cross-sectional study was conducted among 154 healthy children, residing in rural zones of central Italy. For each participant, one urine sample was analyzed by the HPLC-MS/MS technique to simultaneously quantify 8oxodGuo and cotinine (a biomarker of ETS exposure), while information on the children was collected using a questionnaire filled out by the parents. Urinary levels of 8oxodGuo was found to be significantly higher in children exposed to ETS compared to those not exposed (5.53 vs. 4.78 μg/L; p = 0.019). This result was confirmed by the significant association observed between urinary levels of cotinine and 8oxodGuo (r = 0.364, p < 0.0001). Additionally, children exposed to ETS with no smoking ban at home showed a further increased difference than those not exposed (6.35 μg/L vs. 4.78 μg/L; p = 0.008). Considering the great number of adverse effects on human health due to exposure to passive smoking, especially if this exposure begins early in life, it is essential to implement health promotion interventions in this area. We establish a general-equilibrium model to compare the efficiency of two emission regulation policies used worldwide: the carbon tax (CT) and the emission trading scheme (ETS). Assuming monopolistic competition and heterogeneous firms, we show that the ETS is better in an economy with a high degree of heterogeneity, and the CT is better otherwise. We also explore how the market distortions under these two regulation policies are different. Lichens are recognized as highly efficient biological indicators of air pollution. They have been extensively used to detect various types of air pollutants, both from outdoor and indoor sources. Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS) is known to be hazardous not only to its consumers but also to passive consumers, particularly within buildings. This study aims to explore the detection of ETS using lichens within a building in Malaysia. The research was conducted in a public building in Selangor, Malaysia, employing the lichen species Usnea misaminensis. The transplanting technique was utilized, and the nicotine concentration and lichen vitality rate were analyzed. The study demonstrated that lichens can serve as effective biological indicators of indoor air pollutants, specifically nicotine. Additionally, a significant negative relationship (r = -0.71) was found between the lichen vitality rate and nicotine concentrations in the lichen samples placed in the building. This indicates that higher nicotine concentrations in the lichens after approximately 2 months of exposure correspond to lower lichen vitality rates. Research into nicotine detection using lichens may lead to the development of novel monitoring techniques for indoor air quality assessment. Integrating lichenbased sensors into portable monitoring devices or passive sampling systems could provide cost-effective and non-intrusive methods for continuously monitoring nicotine levels in buildings. AbstractObjectiveMethodsResultsConclusionTo study associations between fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) and asthma, airway symptoms, sensitization to common allergens, outdoor pollution and home environment among 380 students in eight junior high schools in two areas in Indonesia.Data on health and home were collected by a face-to face interview before measuring FeNO and performing skin prick test against common allergens. Exploratory linear mixed and logistic regression models were employed.Geometric mean of FeNO was 17.8 ppb (GSD 2.09) and 139 students (36.6%) had elevated FeNO (>20 ppb). In total, 107 students (28.2%) were sensitized to house dust mite (HDM) (Der p1 or Der f1), 4 (1.1%) to cat and 3 (0.8%) to mold (Cladosporium or Alternaria). Moreover, 20 students (5.3%) had diagnosed asthma, 38 (10.0%) had current wheeze, and 107 (28.2%) had current rhinitis. HDM sensitization, diagnosed asthma, current wheeze, and current rhinitis were associated with FeNO. In total, 281 students (73.9%) had mold or dampness, 232 (61.1%) had environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) and 43 (11.3%) had other odor at home. Indoor mold or dampness and other odor at home were associated with FeNO. ETS was negatively associated with FeNO.HDM sensitization and elevated FeNO can be common among children in this part of Indonesia. The high prevalence of elevated FeNO indicate that undiagnosed childhood asthma is common. To investigate the relationship between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of cGMP-dependent protein kinase I (PRKG1) gene and gene-environment interactions with bronchial asthma in children. 109 asthma patients and 158 healthy controls from the General Hospital of Northern Theater Command were enrolled, based case–control study. The iMLDR® multiple SNP typing technique was applied to detect the genotypes of rs7903366, rs7081864, rs7070958 and rs7897633 in PRKG1 gene. The percentage of eosinophils (EOS%) in peripheral blood and serum immunoglobulin E (IgE) in the case group were also measured. Gene-environment interactions were examined using the generalized multi-factor dimensionality reduction (GMDR) method. There were polymorphisms in four SNPs of PRKG1 gene in the case and control groups. The genotype and allele frequencies distribution of rs7897633 demonstrated statistical significance (p < 0.05). There were no statistically significant differences in EOS% and IgE among genotypes at the four SNPs of PRKG1 gene (p > 0.05). The haplotypes CAGA and TGAC presented significant association with asthma risk (p < 0.05). The four-factor model indicated a potential gene-environment interaction in rs7897633, allergen exposure, residence, and environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) exposure (p < 0.05). The rs7897633 in PRKG1 gene was associated with susceptibility to childhood asthma, and C allele is a protective factor. The haplotype CAGA had a protective effect against asthma risk and TGAC was linked to the high risk of developing asthma. BackgroundAssociations between maternal tobacco exposure during pregnancy and childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) have yielded mixed results. This may be due to biases in self-reported smoking or other differences in individual-level risk factors. We utilized a biological marker of maternal tobacco exposure to evaluate the association between maternal tobacco exposure during pregnancy, genetics, and subsequent childhood ALL risk in two large population-based studies of childhood ALL in California.MethodsMaternal exposure to tobacco smoke was assessed with a validated methylation marker (cg05575921) of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor repressor (AHRR) gene in newborn dried blood spots. We adjusted for sex, birthweight, gestational age, mode of delivery, year of birth, AHRR quantitative trait locus (mQTL) rs77111113, and a polygenetic risk score for childhood ALL. We additionally adjusted for principal components in a gene-environment interaction testing method that incorporates gene-only and environment-only effects along with interactions.ResultsAHRR hypomethylation overall was not associated with childhood ALL. In gene-environment interaction testing, several genetic variants displayed significant interaction with AHRR hypomethylation and childhood ALL.ConclusionsOur results suggest that novel candidates in PTPRK and DPP6 may play a role in tobacco-related leukemogenesis. Further research is necessary to better understand the effects of tobacco and these variants on childhood ALL risk.ImpactDespite the lack of an overall "main effect," tobacco exposure during pregnancy affects childhood ALL risk depending on specific genetic variants.

BACKGROUND: Quantifying the dose and distribution of tobacco smoke in the respiratory system is critical for understanding its toxicity, addiction potential, and health impacts. Epidemiologic studies indicate that the incidence of lung tumors varies across different lung regions, suggesting there may be a heterogeneous deposition of smoke particles leading to greater health risks in specific regions. Despite this, few studies have examined the lobar spatial distribution of inhaled particles from tobacco smoke. This gap in knowledge, coupled with the growing popularity of little cigars among youth, underscores the need for additional research with little cigars. RESULTS: In our study, we analyzed the lobar deposition in rat lungs of smoke particles from combusted regular and mentholated Swisher Sweets little cigars. Twelve-week-old male and female Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to smoke particles at a concentration of 84 ± 5 mg/m3 for 2 h, after which individual lung lobes were examined. We utilized Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry to quantify lobar chromium concentrations, serving as a smoke particle tracer. Our findings demonstrated an overall higher particle deposition from regular little cigars than from the mentholated ones. Higher particle deposition fraction was observed in the left and caudal lobes than other lobes. We also observed sex-based differences in the normalized deposition fractions among lobes. Animal study results were compared with the multi-path particle dosimetry (MPPD) model predictions, which showed that the model overestimated particle deposition in certain lung regions. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings revealed that the particle deposition varied between different little cigar products. The results demonstrated a heterogenous deposition pattern, with higher particle deposition observed in the left and caudal lobes, especially with the mentholated little cigars. Additionally, we identified disparities between our measurements and the MPPD model. This discrepancy highlights the need to enhance the accuracy of models before extrapolating animal study results to human lung deposition. Overall, our study provides valuable insights for estimating the dose of little cigars during smoking for toxicity research.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) has been associated with detectable levels of cotinine (a nicotine metabolite) in childrens saliva. However, tobacco smoke also contains toxic and essential trace metals, including chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni) and zinc (Zn). OBJECTIVE: The current study examines whether there is a relationship between ETS exposure, as gauged by salivary cotinine, and salivary levels of these metals in a subset (n = 238) of children from the Family Life Project. METHODS: Using inductively-coupled-plasma optical emission spectrophotometry, we measured levels of metals in saliva from children at ~90 months of age. Salivary cotinine was measured using a commercial immunoassay. RESULTS: We found that Cr, Cu, Mn, and Zn were detected in most samples (85-99%) with lower levels of detection for Pb and Ni (9.3% and 13.9% respectively). There were no significant differences in any of the metal concentrations between males and females, nor were levels associated with body mass index, although significant differences in salivary Cr and Mn by race, state and income-to-needs ratio were observed. Children with cotinine levels >1 ng/ml had higher levels of Zn (b = 0.401, 95% CI: 0.183 to 0.619; p = 0.0003) and Cu (b = 0.655, 95% CI: 0.206 to 1.104; p = 0.004) compared to children with levels 1 μg/L were more likely to have detectable levels of Pb in their saliva (b = 1.40, 95% CI: 0.424 to 2.459; p = 0.006) compared to children with cotinine levels

PurposePerceived harm is associated with substance use. Changes in product and policy landscapes may impact perceived harms of tobacco and cannabis. This study aimed to examine changes in young adults' perceived harms of tobacco and cannabis and their associations with use behavior during a period including both before and after legalization of cannabis.MethodsWe conducted a panel survey of California Bay Area young adults (mean age = 23.5 years old, 64.4% female) in 2014 and 2019-2020. Participants (N = 306) reported past 30-day use and perceived harms of tobacco and cannabis at both waves. Perceived harms to health of cannabis and tobacco (cigarettes, e-cigarettes, hookah, smokeless tobacco, and secondhand tobacco smoke) were measured from 1-"Not at all harmful" to 7-"Extremely harmful." Mixed-effects logistic regressions examined associations between perceived harms and use of tobacco and cannabis, controlling for demographics.ResultsParticipants perceived lower harm for cannabis than for tobacco products. Perceived harms of e-cigarettes, hookah, and smokeless tobacco significantly increased over time; while perceived harms of cigarettes, secondhand tobacco smoke, and cannabis did not change. Increased perceived harm of e-cigarettes was associated with lower odds of any tobacco use (OR = 0.72, 95%CI = 0.56, 0.92), and increased perceived harm of cannabis was associated with lower odds of any cannabis use (OR = 0.51, 95%CI = 0.42, 0.62).ConclusionsFindings suggest that perceived harms of e-cigarettes and cannabis play important roles in driving young adult use behaviors. Risk communication efforts that increase perceptions of health harms related to e-cigarettes and cannabis may decrease use of tobacco and cannabis among young people.

ObjectiveWe aimed to (1) compare serum cotinine with self-report for ascertaining smoking status among reproductive-aged women; (2) estimate the relative odds of adverse cardiovascular (CV) outcomes among women by smoking status; (3) assess whether the association between adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs) and CV outcomes varies by smoking status.Study designWe conducted a cross-sectional study of the nuMoM2b Heart Health Study. Women attended a study visit 2 to 7 years after their first pregnancy. The exposure was smoking status, determined by self-report and by serum cotinine. Outcomes included incident chronic hypertension (HTN), metabolic syndrome (MetS), and dyslipidemia. Multivariable logistic regression estimated odds ratios (ORs) for each outcome by smoking status.ResultsOf 4,392 women with serum cotinine measured, 3,610 were categorized as nonsmokers, 62 as secondhand smoke exposure, and 720 as smokers. Of 3,144 women who denied tobacco smoke exposure, serum cotinine was consistent with secondhand smoke exposure in 48 (1.5%) and current smoking in 131 (4.2%) After adjustment for APOs, smoking defined by serum cotinine was associated with MetS (adjusted OR [aOR] = 1.52, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.21, 1.91) and dyslipidemia (aOR = 1.28, 95% CI: 1.01, 1.62). When stratified by nicotine exposure, nonsmokers with an APO in their index pregnancy had higher odds of stage 1 (aOR = 1.64, 95% CI: 1.32, 2.03) and stage 2 HTN (aOR = 2.92, 95% CI: 2.17, 3.93), MetS (aOR = 1.76, 95% CI: 1.42, 2.18), and dyslipidemia (aOR = 1.55, 95% CI: 1.25, 1.91) relative to women with no APO. Results were similar when smoking exposure was defined by self-report.ConclusionWhether determined by serum cotinine or self-report, smoking is associated with subsequent CV outcomes in reproductive-aged women. Human oral microbial communities are diverse, with implications for oral and systemic health. Oral microbial communities change over time; thus, it is important to understand how healthy versus dysbiotic oral microbiomes differ, especially within and between families. There is also a need to understand how the oral microbiome composition is changed within an individual including by factors such as environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) exposure, metabolic regulation, inflammation, and antioxidant potential. Using archived saliva samples collected from caregivers and children during a 90-month follow-up assessment in a longitudinal study of child development in the context of rural poverty, we used 16S rRNA gene sequencing to determine the salivary microbiome. A total of 724 saliva samples were available, 448 of which were from caregiver/child dyads, an additional 70 from children and 206 from adults. We compared childrens and caregivers oral microbiomes, performed stomatotype analyses, and examined microbial relations with concentrations of salivary markers associated with ETS exposure, metabolic regulation, inflammation, and antioxidant potential (i.e., salivary cotinine, adiponectin, C-reactive protein, and uric acid) assayed from the same biospecimens. Our results indicate that children and caregivers share much of their oral microbiome diversity, but there are distinct differences. Microbiomes from intrafamily individuals are more similar than microbiomes from nonfamily individuals, with child/caregiver dyad explaining 52% of overall microbial variation. Notably, children harbor fewer potential pathogens than caregivers, and participants microbiomes clustered into two groups, with major differences being driven by Streptococcus spp. Differences in salivary microbiome composition associated with ETS exposure, and taxa associated with salivary analytes representing potential associations between antioxidant potential, metabolic regulation, and the oral microbiome. IMPORTANCE The human oral cavity is a multi-environment habitat that harbors a diversity of microorganisms. This oral microbiome is often transmitted between cohabitating individuals, which may associate oral and systemic health within family members. Furthermore, family social ecology plays a significant role in childhood development, which may be associated with lifelong health outcomes. In this study, we collected saliva from children and their caregivers and used 16S rRNA gene sequencing to characterize their oral microbiomes. We also analyzed salivary biomeasures of environmental tobacco smoke exposure, metabolic regulation, inflammation, and antioxidant potential. We show there are differences in individuals oral microbiomes mainly due to Streptococcus spp. that family members share much of their microbes, and several bacterial taxa associate with the selected salivary biomeasures. Our results suggest there are large-scale oral microbiome patterns, and there are likely relationships between oral microbiomes and the social ecology of families.

BackgroundTobacco smoke exposure increases the risk and severity of lower respiratory tract infections in children, yet the mechanisms remain unclear. We hypothesized that tobacco smoke exposure would modify the lower airway microbiome.MethodsSecondary analysis of a multicenter cohort of 362 children between ages 31 days and 18 years mechanically ventilated for >72 h. Tracheal aspirates from 298 patients, collected within 24 h of intubation, were evaluated via 16 S ribosomal RNA sequencing. Smoke exposure was determined by creatinine corrected urine cotinine levels ≥30 µg/g.ResultsPatients had a median age of 16 (IQR 568) months. The most common admission diagnosis was lower respiratory tract infection (53%). Seventy-four (20%) patients were smoke exposed and exhibited decreased richness and Shannon diversity. Smoke exposed children had higher relative abundances of Serratia spp., Moraxella spp., Haemophilus spp., and Staphylococcus aureus. Differences were most notable in patients with bacterial and viral respiratory infections. There were no differences in development of acute respiratory distress syndrome, days of mechanical ventilation, ventilator free days at 28 days, length of stay, or mortality.ConclusionAmong critically ill children requiring prolonged mechanical ventilation, tobacco smoke exposure is associated with decreased richness and Shannon diversity and change in microbial communities.ImpactTobacco smoke exposure is associated with changes in the lower airways microbiome but is not associated with clinical outcomes among critically ill pediatric patients requiring prolonged mechanical ventilation. This study is among the first to evaluate the impact of tobacco smoke exposure on the lower airway microbiome in children. This research helps elucidate the relationship between tobacco smoke exposure and the lower airway microbiome and may provide a possible mechanism by which tobacco smoke exposure increases the risk for poor outcomes in children.

We assessed the efficacy of ozonation as an indoor remediation strategy by evaluating how a carpet serves as a sink and long-term source of thirdhand tobacco smoke (THS) while protecting contaminants absorbed in deep reservoirs by scavenging ozone. Specimens from unused carpet that was exposed to smoke in the lab ("fresh THS") and contaminated carpets retrieved from smokers' homes ("aged THS") were treated with 1000 ppb ozone in bench-scale tests. Nicotine was partially removed from fresh THS specimens by volatilization and oxidation, but it was not significantly eliminated from aged THS samples. By contrast, most of the 24 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons detected in both samples were partially removed by ozone. One of the home-aged carpets was installed in an 18 m3 room-sized chamber, where its nicotine emission rate was 950 ng day-1 m-2. In a typical home, such daily emissions could amount to a non-negligible fraction of the nicotine released by smoking one cigarette. The operation of a commercial ozone generator for a total duration of 156 min, reaching concentrations up to 10,000 ppb, did not significantly reduce the carpet nicotine loading (26-122 mg m-2). Ozone reacted primarily with carpet fibers, rather than with THS, leading to short-term emissions of aldehydes and aerosol particles. Hence, by being absorbed deeply into carpet fibers, THS constituents can be partially shielded from ozonation.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the third leading cause of death worldwide, and its global health burden is increasing. COPD is characterized by emphysema, mucus hypersecretion, and persistent lung inflammation, and clinically by chronic airflow obstruction and symptoms of dyspnea, cough, and fatigue in patients. A cluster of pathologies including chronic bronchitis, emphysema, asthma, and cardiovascular disease in the form of hypertension and atherosclerosis variably coexist in COPD patients. Underlying causes for COPD include primarily tobacco use but may also be driven by exposure to air pollutants, biomass burning, and workplace related fumes and chemicals. While no single animal model might mimic all features of human COPD, a wide variety of published models have collectively helped to improve our understanding of disease processes involved in the genesis and persistence of COPD. In this review, the pathogenesis and associated risk factors of COPD are examined in different mammalian models of the disease. Each animal model included in this review is exclusively created by tobacco smoke (TS) exposure. As animal models continue to aid in defining the pathobiological mechanisms of and possible novel therapeutic interventions for COPD, the advantages and disadvantages of each animal model are discussed.

Much attention has been devoted to the economic benefits of emission trading systems (ETSs), but research concerning the SO2 ETS in China is scarce. We examine China's SO2 ETS in 2007 from the perspective of industrial sub-sectors and employ the difference-in-difference-in-difference (DDD) model to test whether the SO2 ETS can promote industrial total factor productivity (TFP). We identify whether it is the average effect or the dynamic effect of the SO2 ETS that can improve industrial TFP. The heterogeneity test results indicate that this policy has diverse influence in different regions and industries, and the effect is better in pollution-intensive industries. We also find that the policy enhances industrial TFP by promoting efficient technological innovation and capital allocation. Our findings provide evidence that supports the Porter Hypothesis and a guide for the industrialization of developing countries. Chinese policymakers should strengthen environmental enforcement, set quotas accordingly, and encourage technological innovation to improve industrial TFP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı gebe kadınların üçüncü el sigara dumanı hakkındaki inançlarının belirlenmesidir. Yöntem: Bu araştırma tanımlayıcı tiptedir. Çalışma Temmuz-Ekim 2022 tarihleri arasında Karadeniz Bölgesinde yer alan bir hastanede 290 gebe kadın ile gerçekleştirildi. Araştırma verileri tanıtıcı bilgi formu ve Üçüncü El Sigara Dumanı Hakkındaki İnanışlar Ölçeği (BATHS-T) kullanılarak toplandı. Elde edilen veriler bağımsız örneklem t-test ve tek yönlü varyans analizi yapılarak değerlendirildi. Bulgular: Gebelerin yaş ortalaması 28,54±5,45 idi. Kadınların %41,7’si lise mezunuydu ve %69,7’si çalışmıyordu. Katılımcıların %75,2’sinin gebeliği planlanmıştı, %57,6’sı multigravidaydı ve %86,9’u gebeliğinde herhangi bir sorun yaşamamıştı. Gebeliğinde sigara içenlerin oranı %19’du ve kadınların %54,1’inin eşi sigara içiyordu. Gebelerin günlük içtikleri sigara sayısı ortalaması 4,21±2,27 idi. Katılımcıların BATHS-T toplam puan ortalaması 3,90±0,91, sağlık alt boyutu 3,91±0,94 ve kalıcılık alt boyutu 3,89±0,97 olarak bulundu. Üniversite mezunlarında ve primigravidalarda BATHS-T puan ortalaması daha yüksekti. Sonuç ve Öneriler: Hastaneye başvuran yaklaşık 10 kadından ikisi gebeliğinde sigara içiyordu. Objective: This work endeavored to examine the correlation between dietary choline intake and the odds of asthma, utilizing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Methods: Aggregated data from seven cycles (2005–2018) in the NHANES database were utilized. The independent variable was dietary choline intake, and the dependent variable was asthma. The weighted logistic regression method was used to construct a model reflecting the relationship between these two factors. This work employed stratified analysis without adjusting for confounding factors and subgroup analysis with adjusted confounding factors to mine the association between dietary choline intake and asthma. Additionally, restricted cubic spline analysis examined nonlinear associations of the two in age subgroups. Results: Forty five thousand and seven hundreds ninety seven samples were included here. The model indicating the relationship between dietary choline intake and asthma was constructed (OR: 0.86, 95% CI: 0.79–0.93, p < 0.001). Stratified analysis indicated that the interaction terms of age (p < 0.001) and body mass index (BMI) (p = 0.002) with dietary choline intake significantly influenced the relationship model. In the adjusted models, accounting for demographic characteristics, poverty impact ratio, BMI, exposure to environmental tobacco smoke, and total energy intake, an increase in dietary choline intake significantly reduced the odds of asthma (OR: 0.79, 95% CI: 0.72–0.88, p < 0.001). Subgroup analyses based on age and BMI revealed a significant negative correlation between dietary choline intake and the odds of asthma in the adult population (OR: 0.76, 95% CI: 0.67–0.86, p < 0.001), as well as in individuals with a BMI between 25 and 30 kg/m2 (OR: 0.79, 95% CI: 0.63–0.99, p = 0.042), and those with a BMI >30 kg/m2 (OR: 0.73, 95% CI: 0.60–0.89, p = 0.002). Conclusion: Dietary choline intake was significantly inversely correlated with asthma prevalence, especially in adults and overweight/obese individuals, suggesting that increasing choline intake may reduce asthma risk. Further research is needed to explore this relationship and provide tailored dietary recommendations for different age and BMI groups to enhance asthma prevention and management. INTRODUCTION Children are vulnerable to secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure, especially those with lower socioeconomic status. This study assesses the changes in prevalence and socioeconomic inequalities in SHS exposure in children younger than 12 years old in Spain between 2016 and 2019. METHODS We conducted two cross-sectional studies among representative samples of households with children aged <12 years in Spain, in 2016 (n=2411) and 2019 (n=2412). Families were interviewed to assess children's SHS exposure in private settings and outdoor public venues and their adoption of home and car smoke-free rules. We used the education level of the home main earner as a proxy for socioeconomic position. Changes over time in the prevalence and socioeconomic inequalities of SHS exposure and smoke-free rules were estimated through adjusted Poisson regression models with robust variance according to sociodemographic covariates (adjusted prevalence ratios, APRs). RESULTS In 2019, 70.5% of children were exposed to SHS in Spain. No changes between 2016 and 2019 were found for overall SHS exposure, exposure at home, and at school entrances. SHS exposure increased at public transport stations (APR=1.24; 95% CI: 1.03-1.49) and outdoor hospitality venues (APR=1.17; 95% CI: 1.07-1.29) while it decreased in cars (APR=0.74; 95% CI: 0.56-0.98) and parks (APR=0.87; 95% CI: 0.77-0.98). Households with lower education level had higher prevalence of SHS exposure at home in 2019 compared with those with university studies (primary: APR=1.30; 95% CI: 1.11-1.51; secondary: APR=1.12; 95% CI: 1.00-1.25) and were less likely to adopt home indoor smoke-free rules (primary: APR=0.88; 95% CI: 0.79-0.99; secondary: APR=0.95; 95% CI: 0.89-1.02). Socioeconomic inequalities in SHS exposure at home persisted between 2016 and 2019 (p>0.05), while decreased in smoke-free rules in cars (p=0.039). CONCLUSIONS Reported SHS exposure among children in Spain remained high between 2016 and 2019. Diethyl ether (DEE) can be used in diesel engines as a fuel or fuel additive. The review study was compiled from the findings of several studies in this area. The diverse techniques are employed to mitigate the detrimental pollutants emitted by diesel engines. The first approach to reducing emissions involves altering the fuel system and engine design to improve combustion, but this is an expensive and time–consuming process. The utilization of various exhaust gas devices, such as a particle filter and catalytic converter, is necessary for the second way. However, the engine performance could be negatively impacted by these tools. Additionally, these exhaust devices increases the vehicle and maintain costs. The use of different alternative fuels or fuel additives is the third way that reduces emissions while improving engine performance. The particulate matter (PM), smoke, and nitrogen oxides (NOx) are the main environmental pollutants released by diesel engines into the atmosphere. The decreasing PM and NOx emissions at the same time is practically very difficult. The majority of researches indicate that using alternative fuels, such as natural gas, biogas, and biodiesel, or blending additives with conventional or alternative fuels, is the best way to reduce emissions. However, the characteristics of the fuel have a significant influence on cycle variations, which have a significant impact on engine performance, fuel economy, and emissions. Therefore, it is very important that the results of studies on the impact of DEE on cyclic variation are evaluated together to practice applications and to guide future studies. As a result, the primary focus of this study is on the usage of DEE as a fuel or fuel additive with different diesel engine fuels. Electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use is increasing in Europe and the USA. While mounting evidence exists regarding an array of associated adverse health effects, to date limited evidence exists regarding the health effects of e-cigarette use on cardiovascular (CV) disease (CVD). The present review summarizes the effects of e-cigarette use on CV health. A search strategy of in vivo experimental, observational studies (including population-based cohort studies), and interventional studies was conducted in PubMed, MEDLINE, and Web of Science (April 1, 2009–April 1, 2022). The main findings revealed that the influence of e-cigarette on health are attributed mainly to the individual and interactive effects of flavors and additives used in e-cigarette fluids, along with the extended heating. The above collectively stimulate prolonged sympathoexcitatory CV autonomic effects, such as increased heart rate and diastolic blood pressure (BP), as well as decreased oxygen saturation. Hence, e-cigarette users are at increased risk of developing atherosclerosis, hypertension, arrhythmia, myocardial infarction, and heart failure. Such risks are anticipated to increase, especially among the young who are increasingly adopting e-cigarette use particularly with flavored additives. The health risks of smoking are widely known, but the impact of secondhand smoke on children and adolescents is often underestimated. Despite efforts to reduce smoking, exposure to secondhand smoke remains a significant public health concern, especially for young individuals. This systematic review aims to explore the health impacts of secondhand smoking on children and adolescents. Following PRISMA guidelines, 18 eligible studies from 8 countries published between 2015 and 2023 were identified through PubMed, SCOPUS, and Web of Science databases. Findings revealed that passive smoking is associated with respiratory issues like asthma and respiratory infections in children and adolescents aged 4 months to 18 years. Significant correlations were found between asthma severity and cotinine levels, a marker of passive smoking. Additionally, metabolic issues, cardiovascular effects, and ophthalmological changes, and alterations in neurocognitive functions, were noted. Cadmium, a toxic environmental factor, can cross the placental barrier during pregnancy. Pregnant woman may be subjected to cadmium before taking precautionary protective actions. However, the link between birth defects and cadmium remains obscure. Cadmium exposure can induce excessive apoptosis in neuroepithelium during embryonic development progresses. Cadmium exposure activated the p53 via enhancing the adenosine 5'-monophosphate (AMP)-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and reactive oxygen species' (ROS) level. And cadmium decreases the level of Paired box 3 (Pax3) and murine double minute 2 (Mdm2), disrupting the process of p53 ubiquitylation. And p53 accumulation induced excessive apoptosis in neuroepithelium during embryonic development progresses. Excessive apoptosis led to the failure of neural tube closure. The study emphasizes that environmental materials may increase the health risk for embryos. Cadmium caused the failure of neural tube closure during early embryotic day. Pregnant women may be exposed by cadmium before taking precautionary protective actions, because of cadmium concentration-containing foods and environmental tobacco smoking. Passive smoking is considered a major public health issue in China. Prospective evidence regarding the link between secondhand smoke (SHS) and ischemic stroke in China is scarce. The China Kadoorie Biobank (CKB) study in Liuzhou City recruited 50,174 participants during 2004–2008. Of these 30,456 never-smokers were included in our study. The median follow-up period was 10.7 years. The incidence of ischemic stroke was obtained through the China Disease Surveillance Points (DSP) system and the Health Insurance (HI) database. Cox proportional risk models were used to evaluate the association between SHS exposure and ischemic stroke. During 320,678 person-years of follow-up, there were 2059 patients with ischemic stroke observed and the incidence of ischemic stroke was 6.42 per thousand person-years. Participants exposed to SHS daily faced a 21 % higher risk of ischemic stroke (HR = 1.21, 95 % CI : 1.09–1.34) compared to those exposed to SHS less than once a week. Subgroup analyses revealed that daily SHS exposure was linked to heightened risk of ischemic stroke among women, non-employed, and non-weekly tea drinkers. Daily SHS exposure was associated with higher risks of ischemic stroke. Proactive tobacco control strategies are necessary to decrease the risk of ischemic stroke in never smokers. This study aimed to assess the level of knowledge among students regarding the smoke-free campus concept at a university in Izmir and evaluate their perspectives on its implementation. A cross-sectional study was conducted during the 2022-2023 academic year, involving 486 students at a university in Izmir. Participants completed an online questionnaire, which gathered data on their sociodemographic characteristics, smoking status, and their attitudes toward the smoke-free campus initiative. Among the participants, 50.6% were female, and the median age was 20 years. Approximately 35% of students were smokers. Notably, 55.1% of participants had never heard of the smoke-free campus concept. Non-smokers were significantly more likely to report being "exposed to passive smoking," feeling "disturbed by it," and acknowledging the health risks associated with passive smoking. Students who smoked exhibited lower support for switching to a smokefree campus," perceiving it as "discriminatory practice." Approximately 54.9% of students believed that "student participation in creating a smoke-free campus would impact its success," and 91.8% agreed that "student opinions should be considered when determining smoke-free campus policies." Background: The influence of smoking on nonsyndromic clefts has been a topic of research for many years. However, few studies have investigated the effect of smoking on causing clefts in different gene pools. Methods: A meta-analysis was conducted of case-control studies related to smoking. Keywords such as "clefts," "cleft lip," "cleft palate," "orofacial cleft," and "smoking" were used to search the MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane databases. Results: In total, 51 articles were reviewed. The RevMan software was utilized for the analysis, and the Mantel-Haenszel method was employed to pool the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals. Although the overall OR, a measure of the association between exposure and outcome, was higher for smokers than for non-smokers, this association was significantly stronger in individuals from Asia and South America (1.73), and lowest in Europe (1.31). Among active and passive smokers in Asia, the OR was approximately 0.93, indicating an equivalent impact from both types of smoking. Respiratory symptoms are ubiquitous in children and, even though they may be the harbinger of poor longterm outcomes, are often trivialised. Adverse exposures pre-conception, antenatally and in early childhood have lifetime impacts on respiratory health. For the most part, lung function tracks from the pre-school years at least into late middle age, and airflow obstruction is associated not merely with poor respiratory outcomes but also early all-cause morbidity and mortality. Much would be preventable if social determinants of adverse outcomes were to be addressed. This review presents the perspectives of paediatricians from many different contexts, both high and low income, including Europe, the Americas, Australasia, India, Africa and China. It should be noted that there are islands of poverty within even the highest income settings and, conversely, opulent areas in even the most deprived countries. The heaviest burden of any adverse effects falls on those of the lowest socioeconomic status. Themes include passive exposure to tobacco smoke and indoor and outdoor pollution, across the entire developmental course, and lack of access even to simple affordable medications, let alone the new biologicals. Commonly, disease outcomes are worse in resource-poor areas. Both within and between countries there are avoidable gross disparities in outcomes. Climate change is also bearing down hardest on the poorest children. This review highlights the need for vigorous advocacy for children to improve lifelong health. Rationale: Neighborhood disadvantage (ND) has been associated with sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) in children. However, the association between ND and SDB symptom burden and quality of life (QOL) has not yet been studied. Objectives: To evaluate associations between ND with SDB symptom burden and QOL. Methods: Cross-sectional analyses were performed on 453 children, ages 3–12.9 years, with mild SDB (habitual snoring and apnea–hypopnea index < 3/h) enrolled in the PATS (Pediatric Adenotonsillectomy Trial for Snoring) multicenter study. The primary exposure, neighborhood disadvantage, was characterized by the Child Opportunity Index (COI) (range, 0–100), in which lower values (specifically COI ⩽ 40) signify less advantageous neighborhoods. The primary outcomes were QOL assessed by the obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)-18 questionnaire (range, 18–126) and SDB symptom burden assessed by the Pediatric Sleep Questionnaire–Sleep-related Breathing Disorder (PSQ-SRBD) scale (range, 0–1). The primary model was adjusted for age, sex, race, ethnicity, maternal education, recruitment site, and season. In addition, we explored the role of body mass index (BMI) percentile, environmental tobacco smoke (ETS), and asthma in these associations. Results: The sample included 453 children (16% Hispanic, 26% Black or African American, 52% White, and 6% other). COI mean (standard deviation [SD]) was 50.3 (29.4), and 37% (n = 169) of participants lived in disadvantaged neighborhoods. Poor SDB-related QOL (OSA-18 ⩾ 60) and high symptom burden (PSQ-SRBD ⩾ 0.33) were found in 30% (n = 134) and 75% (n = 341) of participants, respectively. In adjusted models, a COI increase by 1 SD (i.e., more advantageous neighborhood) was associated with an improvement in OSA-18 score by 2.5 points (95% confidence interval [CI], −4.34 to −0.62) and in PSQ-SRBD score by 0.03 points (95% CI, −0.05 to −0.01). These associations remained significant after adjusting for BMI percentile, ETS, or asthma; however, associations between COI and SDB-related QOL attenuated by 23% and 10% after adjusting for ETS or asthma, respectively. Conclusions: Neighborhood disadvantage was associated with poorer SDB-related QOL and greater SDB symptoms. Associations were partially attenuated after considering the effects of ETS or asthma. The findings support efforts to reduce ETS and neighborhood-level asthma-related risk factors and identify other neighborhood-level factors that contribute to SDB symptom burden as strategies to address sleep-health disparities. Increasing evidence has shown that thirdhand smoke (THS) exposure is likely to induce adverse health effects. An important knowledge gap remains in our understanding of THS exposure related to cancer risk in the human population. Population-based animal models are useful and powerful in investigating the interplay between host genetics and THS exposure on cancer risk. Here, we used the Collaborative Cross (CC) mouse population-based model system, which recapitulates the genetic and phenotypic diversity observed in the human population, to assess cancer risk after a short period of exposure, between 4 and 9 weeks of age. Eight CC strains (CC001, CC019, CC026, CC036, CC037, CC041, CC042 and CC051) were included in our study. We quantified pan-tumor incidence, tumor burden per mouse, organ tumor spectrum and tumor-free survival until 18 months of age. At the population level, we observed a significantly increased pan-tumor incidence and tumor burden per mouse in THS-treated mice as compared to the control (p = 3.04E-06). Lung and liver tissues exhibited the largest risk of undergoing tumorigenesis after THS exposure. Tumor-free survival was significantly reduced in THS-treated mice compared to control (p = 0.044). At the individual strain level, we observed a large variation in tumor incidence across the 8 CC strains. CC036 and CC041 exhibited a significant increase in pan-tumor incidence (p = 0.0084 and p = 0.000066, respectively) after THS exposure compared to control. We conclude that early-life THS exposure increases tumor development in CC mice and that host genetic background plays an important role in individual susceptibility to THS-induced tumorigenesis. Genetic background is an important factor that should be taken into account when determining human cancer risk of THS exposure.

This article discusses the need for changes in the policies and procedures of the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco (SRNT) and its academic journal, Nicotine & Tobacco Research (N&TR). The authors, members of the Health Equity Network (HEN), call for updated definitions of the "tobacco and nicotine industry" to include all entities involved in the manufacturing, marketing, and distribution of commercial nicotine and tobacco products. The Clinical Effort Against Secondhand Smoke Exposure (CEASE) is an evidence-based framework that increases pediatric providers' ability to address secondhand smoke exposure of minors. Physician champions at 4 University of California sites conducted regular 1-hour didactic trainings on CEASE principles to pediatric residents as part of a longitudinal curriculum. At the conclusion of the academic year, 111 of 284 residents (39%) completed an anonymous survey. CEASE-trained residents reported significantly higher rates than untrained residents of counseling on smoking cessation (adjusted odds ratio [OR] = 4.50, P = .009), and referring to the smokers' quitline (adjusted OR 3.6, P = .007) to 50% or more of their patients' caregivers who smoked. In addition, among CEASE-trained residents, there were significant increases in multiple post-training knowledge and self-efficacy items. Our results show that a brief educational curriculum can be helpful in changing pediatric residents' attitudes and behavior toward assisting adult caregivers to pediatric patients in smoking cessation.

INTRODUCTION: A major site of secondhand smoke exposure for children and adults is the home. Few studies have evaluated the impact of e-cigarette or hookah use on home air quality, despite evidence finding toxic chemicals in secondhand e-cigarette aerosols and hookah smoke. We assessed the effect of e-cigarette and hookah use on home air quality and compared it with air quality in homes where cigarettes were smoked and where no smoking or e-cigarette use occurred. METHODS: Non-smoking homes and homes where e-cigarettes, hookah or cigarettes were used were recruited in the New York City area (n=57) from 2015 to 2019. Particulate matter with diameter less than 2.5 µm (PM2.5), black carbon and carbon monoxide (CO) were measured during a smoking or vaping session, both in a primary smoking room and in an adjacent secondary room where no smoking or vaping occurred. Log transformed data were compared with postanalysis of variance Tukey simultaneous tests. RESULTS: Use of hookah significantly increased PM2.5 levels compared with non-smoking homes, in both the primary and secondary rooms, while use of e-cigarettes increased PM2.5 levels only in primary rooms. Additionally, in-home use of hookah resulted in greater CO concentrations than the use of cigarettes in primary rooms. CONCLUSIONS: Use of e-cigarettes or hookah increases air pollution in homes. For hookah, increases in PM2.5 penetrated even into rooms adjacent to where smoking occurs. Extending smoke-free rules inside homes to include e-cigarette and hookah products is needed to protect household members and visitors from passive exposure to harmful aerosols and gases.

IntroductionChildren's exposure to secondhand smoke is an underaddressed public health threat. The Clinical Effort Against Secondhand Smoke Exposure (CEASE) is a validated framework that trains pediatric providers to screen, counsel, refer to quitlines, and prescribe tobacco cessation medications to adult caregivers of children.MethodsA physician champion at a major urban academic center delivered a longitudinal didactic curriculum of CEASE principles to medical and nurse practitioner students and pediatrics and family medicine residents. At the end of each session, participants completed an anonymous survey measuring changes in self-perceived knowledge, comfort, and familiarity with smoking cessation skills and concepts. Using a separate end-of-year questionnaire, we also surveyed a group of pediatric residents to compare the impact of CEASE training on clinical practice. Finally, we tracked the number of referrals to the state's quitline for the duration of the training.ResultsFifty-two trainees (55% students, 45% residents) responded to the evaluation survey administered immediately following training. There were statistically significant improvements in median scores after CEASE training for comfort in screening, counseling, motivational interviewing, referring to smokers' helplines, and providing caregivers with nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) prescriptions. Fifty-one percent of pediatric residents (41 of 80) responded to the end-of-year survey, which showed statistically significant differences in the number of patients/caregivers offered a referral to California's quitline and prescription of NRT according to completion of CEASE training.DiscussionCEASE training successfully improved the self-efficacy of health professions students and residents in smoking cessation techniques for adult caregivers of children.

Background Unlike cigarette smoking, environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) has not been as well described as an environmental risk for Multiple sclerosis (MS) nor as a risk factor for disease progression.

An electronic cigarette is a rechargeable device that produces an inhaled aerosol containing varying levels of nicotine, and inorganic and organic toxicants and carcinogenic compounds. The aerosol is generated by heating a solution of propylene glycol and glycerin with nicotine and flavoring ingredients at a high temperature. The e-cigarette was developed and marketed as a safer alternative to the regular cigarette which is known to be injurious to human health. However, published studies suggest that the aerosol of e-cigarette can also have adverse health effects. The main objective of this review is to briefly describe some consequences of e-cigarette smoking, and to present data showing that the resulting increased oxidative stress and inflammation are likely to be involved in effecting to lung damage. Other organs are also likely to be affected. The aerosol contains varying amounts of organic and inorganic toxicants as well as carcinogens, which might serve as the source of such deleterious events. In addition, the aerosol also contains nicotine, which is known to be addictive. E-cigarette smoking releases these toxicants into the air leading to inhalation by nonsmokers in residential or work place areas. Unlike regular tobacco smoke, the long-term consequences of direct and secondhand exposure to e-cigarette aerosol have not been extensively studied but based on available data, e-cigarette aerosol should be considered harmful to human health.

BackgroundExposure to tobacco or marijuana smoke, or e-cigarette aerosols, causes vascular endothelial dysfunction in humans and rats. We aimed to determine what constituent, or class of constituents, of smoke is responsible for endothelial functional impairment.MethodsWe investigated several smoke constituents that we hypothesized to mediate this effect by exposing rats and measuring arterial flow-mediated dilation (FMD) pre- and post-exposure. We measured FMD before and after inhalation of sidestream smoke from research cigarettes containing normal and reduced nicotine level with and without menthol, as well as 2 of the main aldehyde gases found in both smoke and e-cigarette aerosol (acrolein and acetaldehyde), and inert carbon nanoparticles.ResultsFMD was reduced by all 4 kinds of research cigarettes, with extent of reduction ranging from 20% to 46% depending on the cigarette type. While nicotine was not required for the impairment, higher nicotine levels in smoke were associated with a greater percent reduction of FMD (41.1±4.5% reduction versus 19.2±9.5%; P=0.047). Lower menthol levels were also associated with a greater percent reduction of FMD (18.5±9.8% versus 40.5±4.8%; P=0.048). Inhalation of acrolein or acetaldehyde gases at smoke-relevant concentrations impaired FMD by roughly 50% (P=0.001). ObjectiveTobacco residue, also known as third-hand smoke (THS), contains toxicants and lingers in dust and on surfaces and clothes. THS also remains on hands of individuals who smoke, with potential transfer to infants during visitation while infants are hospitalized in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs), raising concerns (e.g., hindered respiratory development) for vulnerable infants. Previously unexplored, this study tested handwashing (HW) and sanitization efficacy for finger-nicotine removal in a sample of adults who smoked and were visiting infants in an NICU.Study designA cross-sectional sample was recruited to complete an interview, carbon monoxide breath samples, and three nicotine wipes of separate fingers (thumb, index, and middle). Eligible participants (n = 14) reported current smoking (verified with breath samples) and were randomly assigned to 30 seconds of HW (n = 7) or alcohol-based sanitization (n = 7), with the order of finger wipes both counterbalanced and randomly assigned. After randomization, the first finger was wiped for nicotine. Participants then washed or sanitized their hands and finger two was wiped 5 minutes later. An interview assessing tobacco/nicotine use and exposure was then administered, followed by a second breath sample and the final finger wipe (40-60 minutes after washing/sanitizing).ResultsGeneralized linear mixed models found that HW was more effective than sanitizer for nicotine removal but failed to completely remove nicotine.ConclusionsWithout proper protections (e.g., wearing gloves and gowns), NICU visitors who smoke may inadvertently expose infants to THS. BackgroundThirdhand smoke (THS) exposure correlated with significant metabolism of carcinogenic chemicals and the potential to cause detrimental health effects. Human harm research of THS exposure is limited to one other study and overall, there is a general lack of knowledge of the human health responses to THS exposure.MethodsThis was a clinical investigation to evaluate the health effects of 3-h dermal THS exposure from urine and plasma. 10 healthy, non-smoking subjects were recruited for dermal exposure for 3 h exposed to clothing impregnated with filtered clean air or THS. Exposures to clean air or THS occurred 20-30 days apart.FindingsIn THS-exposed group, there was a significant elevation of urinary 8-OHdG, 8-isoprostane, protein carbonyls. The THS 3-h exposure identified proteomics pathways of inflammatory response (p=2.18 × 10-8), adhesion of blood cells (p=2.23 × 10-8), atherosclerosis (p=2.78 × 10-9), and lichen planus (p=1.77 × 10-8). Nine canonical pathways were significantly activated including leukocyte extravasation signaling (z-score=3.0), and production of nitric oxide and reactive oxygen in macrophages (z-score=2.1). The THS 22-h proteomics pathways revealed inflammation of organ (p=3.09 × 10-8), keratinization of the epidermis (p=4.0 × 10-7), plaque psoriasis (p=5.31 × 10-7), and dermatitis (p=6.0 × 10-7). Environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) is known to cause lung inflammatory and injurious responses. Smoke exposure is associated with the pathobiology related to lung fibrosis, whereas the mechanism that ETS exposure augments pulmonary fibrogenesis is unclear. We hypothesized that ETS exposure could exacerbate fibrotic responses via collagen dynamic dysregulation and complement activation. C57BL/6J and p16-3MR mice were exposed to ETS followed by bleomycin administration. ETS exposure exacerbated bleomycin-induced collagen and lysyl oxidase overexpression in the fibrotic lesion. ETS exposure also led to augmented bleomycin-induced upregulation of C3 and C3AR, which are pro-fibrotic markers. Moreover, overexpressed collagens and C3 levels were highly significant in males than females. The old mice (17 months old) were exposed to ETS and treated with bleomycin to induce fibrogenesis which is considered as an aging-associated disease. Fewer gene and protein dysregulations trends were identified between ETS exposure with the bleomycin group and the bleomycin alone group in old mice. Based on our findings, we suggested that ETS exposure increases the risk of developing severe lung fibrotic responses via collagen overexpression and lysyl oxidase-mediated collagen stabilization in the fibrotic lesion, and potentially affected the complement system activation induced by bleomycin. Further, male mice were more susceptible than females during fibrogenesis exacerbation. Thus ETS and bleomycin induced lung fibrotic changes via collagen-lysyl oxidase in an age-dependent mechanism. The model relies on machine learning techniques, including AdaBoost, ETS, Prophet, SARIMA, LightGBM, and TL-BLSTM models, to analyze data, uncover trends, and inform decision-making. By offering a thorough assessment of the effects of conservation approaches, this model aids in shaping well-informed decisions regarding the distribution of resources. As a result, this process strengthens initiatives designed to protect biodiversity and the Earth's natural resources.
