Given a family of graphs $\mathcal{H}$, a graph $G$ is $\mathcal{H}$-free if any subset of $V(G)$ does not induce a subgraph of $G$ that is isomorphic to any graph in $\mathcal{H}$. We present sufficient and necessary conditions for a graph $G$ such that $G/e$ is $\mathcal{H}$-free for any edge $e$ in $E(G)$. A graph $G$ is $H$-free if any subset of $V(G)$ does not induce a subgraph of $G$ that is isomorphic to $H$. Given a graph $H$, we present sufficient and necessary conditions for a graph $G$ such that $G/e$ is $H$-free for any edge $e$ in $E(G)$. Thereafter, we use these conditions to characterize forests, claw-free, $2K_{2}$-free, $C_{4}$-free, $C_{5}$-free, split, and pseudo-split graphs.

Crapo introduced a construction of interval partitions of the Boolean lattice for sets equipped with matroid structure. This construction, in the context of graphic matroids, is related to the notion of edge activities introduced by Tutte. This implies that each spanning subgraph of a connected graph can be constructed from edges of exactly one spanning tree by deleting a unique subset of internally active edges and adding a unique subset of externally active edges. Since the family of vertex independent sets does not give rise to a matroid structure we can not apply Crapo's construction on the vertex set when using the family of independent sets as generating sets. In this paper, we introduce the concept of vertex activities to tackle the problem of generating interval partitions of the Boolean lattice of the vertex set. We show how to generate a cover, present some properties related to vertex activities of some special maximal independent sets and consider some special graphs. Finally, we will show that level labellings in pruned graphs always generate a partition.

The neighborhood polynomial of graph $G$ is the generating function for the number of vertex subsets of $G$ of which the vertices have a common neighbor in $G$. In this paper, we investigate the behavior of this polynomial under several graph operations. Specifically, we provide an explicit formula for the neighborhood polynomial of the graph obtained from a given graph $G$ by vertex attachment. We use this result to propose a recursive algorithm for the calculation of the neighborhood polynomial. Finally, we prove that the neighborhood polynomial can be found in polynomial-time in the class of $k$-degenerate graphs.

The bipartition polynomial of a graph is a generalization of many other graph polynomials, including the domination, Ising, matching, independence, cut, and Euler polynomial. We show in this paper that it is also a powerful tool for proving graph properties. In addition, we can show that the bipartition polynomial is polynomially reconstructible, which means that we can recover it from the multiset of bipartition polynomials of one-edge-deleted subgraphs., Comment: 20 pages, 1 figure

Counting dominating sets in a graph $G$ is closely related to the neighborhood complex of $G$. We exploit this relation to prove that the number of dominating sets $d(G)$ of a graph is determined by the number of complete bipartite subgraphs of its complement. More precisely, we state the following. Let $G$ be a simple graph of order $n$ such that its complement has exactly $a(G)$ subgraphs isomorphic to $K_{2p,2q}$ and exactly $b(G)$ subgraphs isomorphic to $K_{2p+1,2q+1}$. Then $d(G) = 2^n -1 + 2[a(G)-b(G)]$. We also show some new relations between the domination polynomial and the neighborhood polynomial of a graph.

The domination polynomials of binary graph operations, aside from union, join and corona, have not been widely studied. We compute and prove recurrence formulae and properties of the domination polynomials of families of graphs obtained by various products, ranging from explicit formulae and recurrences for specific families to more general results. The domination polynomial D(G,x) is the ordinary generating function for the dominating sets of an undirected graph G=(V,E) with respect to their cardinality. We consider in this paper representations of D(G,x) as a sum over subsets of the edge and vertex set of G. One of our main results is a representation of D(G,x) as a sum ranging over spanning bipartite subgraphs of G. We call a graph G conformal if all of its components are of even order. The domination polynomial D(G,x) of a graph G is the generating function of its dominating sets. We prove that D(G,x) satisfies a wide range of reduction formulas. We show linear recurrence relations for D(G,x) for arbitrary graphs and for various special cases. We give splitting formulas for D(G,x) based on articulation vertices, and more generally, on splitting sets of vertices.

We propose a new network reliability measure for some particular kind of service networks, which we refer to as domination reliability. We relate this new reliability measure to the domination polynomial of a graph and the coverage probability of a hypergraph. We derive explicit and recursive formulae for domination reliability and its associated domination reliability polynomial, deduce an analogue of Whitney's broken circuit theorem, and prove that computing domination reliability is NP-hard., Comment: 14 pages

Let G=(V,E) be an undirected loopless graph with possible parallel edges and s and t be two vertices of G. Assume that vertex s is labelled at the initial time step and that every labelled vertex copies its labelling to neighbouring vertices along edges with one labelled endpoint independently with probability p in one time step. In this paper, we establish the equivalence between the expected s-t first arrival time of the above spread process and the notion of the stochastic shortest s-t path. Moreover, we give a short discussion of analytical results on special graphs including the complete graph and s-t series-parallel graphs. Let $G=(V,E)$ be a simple undirected graph with $n$ vertices then a set partition $\pi=\{V_1, ..., V_k\}$ of the vertex set of $G$ is a connected set partition if each subgraph $G[V_j]$ induced by the blocks $V_j$ of $\pi$ is connected for $1\le j\le k$. Define $q_{i}(G)$ as the number of connected set partitions in $G$ with $i$ blocks. The partition polynomial is then $Q(G, x)=\sum_{i=0}^n q_{i}(G)x^i$. This paper presents a splitting approach to the partition polynomial on a separating vertex set $X$ in $G$ and summarizes some properties of the bond lattice. Furthermore the bivariate partition polynomial $Q(G,x,y)=\sum_{i=1}^n \sum_{j=1}^m q_{ij}(G)x^iy^j$ is briefly discussed, where $q_{ij}(G)$ counts the number of connected set partitions with $i$ blocks and $j$ intra block edges. Finally the complexity for the bivariate partition polynomial is proven to be $\sharp P$-hard.
