High activity, selectivity and recyclability are crucial parameters in the design of performant catalysts. Furthermore, depletion of platinum‐group metals (PGM) drives further research towards highly available metal‐based catalysts. In this framework, iron based active sites supported on nitrogen‐doped carbon materials (Fe/N@C) have been explored to tackle important applications in organic chemistry, for both oxidation and reduction of C‐O/C‐N bonds, as well as in electrocatalysis for energy applications. This versatile reactivity makes them ideal substitutes to PGM‐based catalysts, being based on abundant elements. Despite important advances in material science and characterisation techniques allowing the analysis of heterogeneous/electro‐ catalysts at the atomic scale, the nature of the catalytically active sites in Fe/N@C remains elusive. Most recent theoretical studies point at individual FeNx single sites as the origin of the catalytic activity. Although their identification is still challenging with current technology, establishing their real nature will foster further research on these PGM‐free and redox‐polyvalent catalysts. In this review, we provide an overview of their applications in both thermal and electrochemical processes. Throughout the review, we highlight the different characterisation techniques employed to gain insight into the catalysts active sites.

Bifunctional catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are highly desirable for rechargeable metal-air batteries and regenerative fuel cells. However, the commercial oxygen electrocatalysts (mainly noble metal based) can only exhibit either ORR or OER activity, and also suffer from inherent cost and stability issues. It remains challenging to achieve efficient ORR and OER bifunctionality on a single catalyst. Metal-free structures offer relatively large scope for such bifunctionality to be enginnered within one catalyst, together with improved cost-effectiveness and durablility. Herein, by closely coupled computational design and experimental development, highly effective bifunctionality is achieved in a phosphorus and nitrogen co-doped graphene framework (PNGF) - with both ORR and OER activities reaching the theoretical limits of metal-free catalysts, superior to the noble metal counterparts in both (bi)functionality and durability. In particular, with the identification of active P-N sites for OER and N-doped sites for ORR , we successfully intensified such sites by one-pot synthesis to tailor the PNGF. The resulting catalyst reaches an ORR potential of 0.845 V vs. RHE at 3 mA cm-2 and an OER potential of 1.55 V vs. RHE at 10 mA cm-2, respectively. Its combined ORR and OER overpotential of 705 mV is significantly lower than those reported previously for metal-free bifunctional catalysts.

Metal sulfides are commonly used in energy storage and electrocatalysts due to their redox centers and active sites. Most literature reports show that their performance decreases significantly caused by oxidation in alkaline electrolyte during electrochemical testing. Herein, S and N co‐doped graphene‐based nickel cobalt sulfide aerogels are synthesized for use as rechargeable alkaline battery electrodes and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts. Notably, this system shows improved cyclability due to the stabilization effect of the S and N co‐doped graphene aerogel (SNGA). This reduces the rate of oxidation and the decay of electronic conductivity of the metal sulfides materials in alkaline electrolyte, i.e., the capacity decrease of CoNi2S4/SNGA is 4.2% for 10 000 cycles in a three‐electrode test; the current retention of 88.6% for CoS/SNGA after 12 000 s current–time chronoamperometric response in the ORR test is higher than corresponding CoS nanoparticles and CoS/non‐doped graphene aerogels. Importantly, the results here confirm that the NiCoS ternary materials behave as an electrode for rechargeable alkaline batteries rather than supercapacitors electrodes in three‐electrode test as commonly described and accepted in the literature. Furthermore, formulas to evaluate the performance of hybrid battery devices are specified.

Novel oligo(ethylene glycol)-based thermoresponsive stationary phases have been studied for the separation of bioanalytes Well-defined copolymers of (2-methoxyethoxy)ethyl methacrylate and oligo(ethylene glycol) methacrylate were synthesized by atom-transfer radical polymerization in the presence of an N-succinimidyl-functionalized initiator. The reactive chain ends of these copolymers were then reacted with amino-functionalized silica monoliths. The formed composites were studied as chromatography materials. For instance, it was demonstrated that thermo responsive oligo(ethylene glycol)-based stationary phases allow rapid, efficient separation OF steroid and protein mixtures in pure water under isocratic high-performance liquid chromatographic elution.

Over the past 150 years, our ability to produce and transform engineered materials has been responsible for our current high standards of living, especially in developed economies. However, we must carefully think of the effects our addiction to creating and using materials at this fast rate will have on the future generations. The way we currently make and use materials detrimentally affects the planet Earth, creating many severe environmental problems. It affects the next generations by putting in danger the future of the economy, energy, and climate. We are at the point where something must drastically change, and it must change now. We must create more sustainable materials alternatives using natural raw materials and inspiration from nature while making sure not to deplete important resources, i.e. in competition with the food chain supply. We must use less materials, eliminate the use of toxic materials and create a circular materials economy where reuse and recycle are priorities. We must develop sustainable methods for materials recycling and encourage design for disassembly. We must look across the whole materials life cycle from raw resources till end of life and apply thorough life cycle assessments (LCAs) based on reliable and relevant data to quantify sustainability. We need to seriously start thinking of where our future materials will come from and how could we track them, given that we are confronted with resource scarcity and geographical constrains. This is particularly important for the development of new and sustainable energy technologies, key to our transition to net zero. Currently ‘critical materials’ are central components of sustainable energy systems because they are the best performing. A few examples include the permanent magnets based on rare earth metals (Dy, Nd, Pr) used in wind turbines, Li and Co in Li-ion batteries, Pt and Ir in fuel cells and electrolysers, Si in solar cells just to mention a few. These materials are classified as ‘critical’ by the European Union and Department of Energy. Except in sustainable energy, materials are also key components in packaging, construction, and textile industry along with many other industrial sectors. This roadmap authored by prominent researchers working across disciplines in the very important field of sustainable materials is intended to highlight the outstanding issues that must be addressed and provide an insight into the pathways towards solving them adopted by the sustainable materials community.
