Background: Potential antibacterial substances, such as titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ), are being extensively studied throughout the research world. A modified hydrothermal nanotitania extraction was shown to inhibit Staphylococcus aureus growth in the laboratory. However, the toxicity effect of the extract on rats is unknown. In this study, we observed the effects of a modified hydrothermal nanotitania extraction on the skin and behavior of Sprague-Dawley rats., Methods: Sprague-Dawley ( Rattus norvegicus ) rats were used as the experimental animals. The skin around the dorsum of the tested animals was shaved and pasted with 0.1 mg and 0.5 mg of the nanotitania extraction. The color and condition of the pasted area and the behavior of the animals were observed., Results: 0.1 mg nanotitania extraction application on the dorsum of the rat produced no skin color changes at day 1, day 3, day 5, or day 7 postapplication. There were no changes in their behavior up to day 7 with no skin rashes or skin scratches seen or fur changes. Today, 44 Sc is an attractive radionuclide for molecular imaging with PET. In this work, we evaluated a 44 Ti/ 44 Sc radionuclide generator based on TEVA resin as a source of 44 Sc. The generator prototype (5 MBq) exhibits high 44 Ti retention and stable yield of 44 Sc (91 ± 6 %) in 1 mL of eluate (20 bed volumes, eluent-0.1 M oxalic acid/0.2 M HCl) during one year of monitoring (more than 120 elutions). The breakthrough of 44 Ti did not exceed 1.5 × 10 -5 % (average value was 6.5 × 10 -6 %). Post-processing of the eluate for further use in radiopharmaceutical synthesis was proposed. The post-processing procedure using a combination of Presep ® PolyChelate and TK221 resins made it possible to obtain 44 Sc-radioconjugates with high labeling yield (≥95%) while using small precursor amounts (5 nmol). The proposed method takes no more than 15 min and provides ≥90% yield relative to the 44 Sc activity eluted from the generator. The labeling efficiency was demonstrated on the example of [ 44 Sc]Sc-PSMA-617 and [ 44 Sc]Sc-PSMA-I&T synthesis. Some superiority of PSMA-I&T over PSMA-617 in terms of 44 Sc labeling efficiency was demonstrated (likely due to presence of DOTAGA chelator in the precursor structure). It was also shown that microwave heating of the reaction mixture considerably shortened the reaction time and improved radiolabeling yield and reproducibility of [ 44 Sc]Sc-PSMA-617 and [ 44 Sc]Sc-PSMA-I&T synthesis.

A major issue hindering development of thin film nanocomposite (TFN) nanofiltration (NF) membrane is the interfacial defects induced by nanomaterial aggregation in top layer. Although various nanomaterials surface modification strategies have been developed to eliminate the interfacial defects, they usually involve extra modification steps and complex post-treatments. Inspired by the substrate-independent coating ability of tannic acid (TA) and the fact that the phenolic hydroxyl groups in TA can react with acyl chloride group in trimesoyl chloride, a TA coating solution containing TiO 2 nanoparticles was used as an aqueous phase of interfacial polymerization to prepare interfacial modified TFN NF membranes in this study. Surface modification of TiO 2 nanoparticles and interfacial polymerization can be carried out in a single step without any extra pre-modification step. It was found that the TA coating on TiO 2 nanoparticles surface could decrease TiO 2 aggregations and enhance interfacial compatibility between TiO 2 and polyester matrix. The TFN NF membrane prepared at a TiO 2 loading of 0.020 wt% exhibited a pure water flux of 28.8 L m -2  h -1 (284% higher than that of the controlled TFC membrane), and possessed enhanced NaCl and Na 2 SO 4 rejections of 57.9% and 94.6%, respectively, breaking through the trade-off between permeability and selectivity., Competing Interests: Declaration of Competing Interest The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Inc. The bimetallic metal complex Titanocref exhibits relevant anticancer activity, but it is unknown if it is stable to reach target tissues intact. To gain insight, a pharmacologically relevant dose was added to human blood plasma and the mixture was incubated at 37 °C. The obtained mixture was analyzed 5 and 60 min later by size-exclusion chromatography hyphenated to an inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometer (SEC-ICP-AES). We simultaneously detected several titanium (Ti), gold (Au) and sulfur (S)-peaks, which corresponded to a Ti degradation product that eluted partially, and a Au degradation product that eluted entirely bound to plasma proteins (both time points). Although ~70% of the intact Titanocref was retained on the column after 60 min, our results allowed us to establish - for the first time - its likely degradation pathway in human plasma at near physiological conditions. These results suggest that ~70% of Titanocref remain in plasma after 60 min, which supports results from a recent in vivo study in which mice were treated with Titanocref and revealed Ti:Au molar ratios in tumors and organs close to 1:1. Thus, our stability studies suggest that the intact drug is able to reach target tissue. The use of probiotics to treat gastrointestinal diseases such as diarrhea especially in children is becoming increasingly popular. Besides, the use of nanomaterials in food products is increasing rapidly especially in candies and chocolates. How these nanomaterials influence probiotic bacteria and their activity remains unexplored. Therefore, nanomaterials from commercial chocolate were purified and characterized by using SEM-EDS and XRD. The tested chocolate contained nano-TiO 2 with an average size of ~ 40 nm. The influence of the extracted TiO 2 on a commercial probiotic formulation usually used to treat diarrhea in children was studied. The probiotic formulation contained Bacillus coagulans, Enterococcus faecalis, and Enterococcus faecium as evident from 16S rRNA gene sequences and polyphasic characterization. Isolated bacteria exhibited known probiotic activities like biofilm formation, acid production, growth at 6% salt, and antibiotic resistance. TiO 2 from chocolates inhibited the growth and activity of the probiotic formulation over a concentration range of 125-500μg/ml in vitro. Based on results, it is estimated that 20 g of such chocolate contains enough TiO 2 to disturb the gut microbial community of children aged 2-8 years with a stomach capacity of ~ 0.5-0.9 l. The in vivo study on white albino mice shows the same response but with a higher dose. The results obtained by plate counts, MTT assay, live/dead staining, and qPCR suggest that TiO 2 from chocolates inhibits the growth and viability of probiotic bacteria in mice gut even at a concentration of 50-100 μg/day/mice. Therefore, TiO 2 in chocolate discourages survival of probiotic bacteria in the human gut.

The removal of food and industrial grade titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) particles through drinking water filtration was assessed via direct visualization of an in situ 2-D micromodel. The goal of this research was to determine whether variances in surface composition, aggregate size, and ionic strength result in different transport and deposition processes in porous media. Food and industrial grade TiO 2 particles were characterized by measuring their hydrodynamic diameter, zeta potential, and zero point of charge before introduction into the 2-D micromodel. The removal efficiency as a function of position on the collector surface was calculated from direct visualization measurements. Notably, food grade TiO 2 had a lower removal efficiency when compared with industrial grade. The difference in removal efficiency between the two particle types could be attributed to the higher stability (as indicated by the larger zeta potential values) of the food grade particles, which lead to a reduced aggregate size when compared to the industrial grade particles. This removal efficiency trend was most pronounced in the rear stagnation point, due to the high contribution of hydrodynamic forces at that point. It could be inferred from the results presented herein that particle removal strategies should be based on particle aggregate size and surface charge. Graphical abstract ᅟ.

Applicability of single-particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (sp-ICP-MS) using dwell times equal to or shorter than 100 μs has been tested for assessing titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO 2 NPs) in bivalve mollusks. TiO 2 NPs isolation from fresh mollusk tissues was achieved by ultrasound assisted enzymatic hydrolysis procedure using a pancreatin/lipase mixture. Optimum extraction conditions imply ultrasonication (60% amplitude) for 10 min, and 7.5 mL of a solution containing 3.0 g L -1 of pancreatin and lipase (pH 7.4). The developed method was found to be repeatable (repeatability of 17% for the over-all procedure, TiO 2 NPs concentration of 5.33 × 10 7  ± 8.89 × 10 6 , n = 11), showing a limit of detection of 5.28 × 10 6 NPs g -1 , and a limit of detection in size of 24.4-30.4 nm, based on the 3σ criteria, and on the 3σ/5 σ criteria, respectively. The analytical recovery within the 90-99% range (use of TiO 2 NPs standards of 50 nm at 7 and 14 μg L -1 as Ti). Several bivalve mollusks (clams, cockles, mussels, razor clams, oysters and variegated scallops) were analyzed for total titanium (ICP-MS after microwave assisted acid digestion), and for TiO 2 NPs by the proposed method. Scandium-44g (half-life 3.97h) shows promise for application in positron emission tomography (PET), due to favorable decay parameters. One of the sources of 44g Sc is the 44 Ti/ 44g Sc generator, which can conveniently provide this radioisotope on a daily basis at a diagnostic facility. Titanium-44 (half-life 60.0 a), in turn, can be obtained via proton irradiation of scandium metal targets. A substantial 44 Ti product batch, however, requires high beam currents, long irradiation times and an elaborate chemical procedure for 44 Ti isolation and purification. This study describes the production of a combined 175MBq (4.7mCi) batch yield of 44 Ti in week long proton irradiations at the Los Alamos Isotope Production Facility (LANL-IPF) and the Brookhaven Linac Isotope Producer (BNL-BLIP). A two-step ion exchange chromatography based chemical separation method is introduced: first, a coarse separation of 44 Ti via anion exchange sorption in concentrated HCl results in a 44 Tc/Sc separation factor of 10 2 -10 3 . A second, cation exchange based step in HCl media is then applied for 44 Ti fine purification from residual Sc mass. Stable organosols of TiO 2 nanoparticles were prepared by hydrolysis of titanium tetraisopropoxide (TTIP) in microemulsions of sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfoxynate (АОТ) in n-decane with increasing the content of aqueous pseudophase from 0.15 to 0.85 vol.%. As the water content increased, the hydrodynamic diameter of nanoparticles grew from 10 to 225 nm, and the  ζ-potential, from -6 to 18 mV (the surface of TiO 2 nanoparticles was recharged when the water content was 0.45 vol.%). Nonaqueous electrophoresis in a capacitor-type cell made it possible to concentrate nanoparticles with a diameter of 60 to 225 nm (concentration factor was 10), separate 20 nm and 225 nm particles, and decrease the content of АОТ in organosol by an order of magnitude. Preparation of a concentrate of nanoparticles with a low content (0.015 M) of AOT included the following stages: (i) electrophoresis after synthesis; (ii) sampling of the concentrate and its twenty-fold dilution with pure n-decane; and (iii) repeated electrophoresis. An easily recoverable homemade TiO 2 catalyst (GICA-1) has been evaluated during the overall photodegradation process, understood as photocatalytic efficiency and catalyst recovery step, in the solar light-assisted photodegradation of isoproturon and its reuse in two consecutive cycles. The global feasibility has been compared to the commercial TiO 2 P25. The homemade GICA-1 catalyst presented better sedimentation efficiency than TiO 2 P25 at all studied pHs, which could be explained by its higher average hydrodynamic particle size (3 μm) and other physicochemical surface properties. The evaluation of the overall process (isoproturon photo-oxidation + catalyst recovery) revealed GICA-1 homemade titania catalyst strengths: total removal of isoproturon in less than 60 min, easy recovery by sedimentation, and reusability in two consecutive cycles, without any loss of photocatalytic efficiency. Therefore, considering the whole photocatalytic cycle (good performance in photodegradation plus catalyst recovery step), the homemade GICA-1 photocatalyst resulted in more affordability than commercial TiO 2 P25. The production of 44 Ti via the 45 Sc(p,2n) reaction requires high proton beam currents and long irradiation times. Recovery and purification of no-carrier added (nca) 44 Ti from scandium metal targets involves complex separation chemistry. In this study, separation systems based on solid phase extraction chromatography were investigated, including branched diglycolamide (BDGA) resin and hydroxamate based ZR resin. Titanium is the ninth most abundant element in the Earth's crust and some organisms sequester it avidly, though no essential biological role has yet been recognized. This Minireview addresses how the properties of titanium, especially in an oxic aqueous environment, might make a biological role difficult to recognize. It further considers how new -omic technologies might overcome the limitations of the past and help to reveal a specific role for this metal. While studies with well established model organisms have their rightful place, organisms that are known avid binders or sequesterers of titanium should be promising places to investigate a biological role.

Plain and microstructured cp-titanium samples were studied as possible biofilm reactor substrates. The biofilms were grown by exposition of the titanium samples to bacteria in a flow cell. As bacteria the rod shaped gram negative Pseudomonas fluorescens and the spherical gram negative Paracoccus seriniphilus were chosen. Afterward, the samples were cleaned in subsequent steps: First, with a standard solvent based cleaning procedure with acetone, isopropanol, and ultrapure water and second by oxygen plasma sputtering. It will be demonstrated by means of x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, fluorescence microscopy, and confocal laser scanning microscopy that oxygen plasma cleaning is a necessary and reliant tool to fully clean and restore titanium surfaces contaminated with a biofilm. The microstructured surfaces act beneficial to biofilm growth, while still being fully restorable after biofilm contamination. Scanning electron microscopy images additionally show, that the plasma process does not affect the microstructures. The presented data show the importance of the cleaning procedure. Just using solvents does not remove the biofilm and all its components reliably while a cleaning process by oxygen plasma regenerates the surfaces.

Objective: The aim of this prospective study is to evaluate presence and quantity of micro- and nanosized particles (NPs) and interindividual differences in their distribution and composition in nasal mucosa., Methods: Six samples of nasal mucosa obtained by mucotomy from patients with chronic hypertrophic rhinosinusitis were examined. Samples divided into 4 parts according to the distance from the nostrils were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and Raman microspectroscopy to detect solid particles and characterize their morphology and composition. A novel method of quantification of the particles was designed and used to evaluate interindividual differences in distribution of the particles. The findings were compared with patients' employment history., Results: In all the samples, NPs of different elemental composition were found (iron, barium, copper, titanium, etc.), predominantly in the parts most distant from nostrils, in various depths from the surface of the mucosa and interindividual differences in their quantity and composition were found, possibly in relation to professional exposition., Conclusions: This study has proven the possibility of quantification of distribution of micro- and nanosized particles in tissue samples and that the NPs may deposit in deeper layers of mucosa and their elemental composition may be related to professional exposition to the sources of NPs.

Almost 2555-4380 tons of paint sludge are produced annually in an auto-manufacturing plant; recycling and reproduction of beneficial materials such as titanium dioxide (TiO2) and its application in paint production from paint sludge are evaluated in this article. The disposal of these sludge is environmentally important and is the main and most serious challenge for auto-manufacturing units. Today, these sludge are recognized as toxic wastes, whose disposal is much costly and constrained by environmental standards. Controlled disposal requires spaces, which are expensive and impermeable, because the sludge contains large amounts of hazardous materials such as heavy metals, solvents, and other materials polluting wells, springs, and other water resources. In this research, X-ray diffraction spectroscopy was carried out to determine the types of sludge combinations. Then, chemical digestion and centrifuge was used to extract TiO2, the extracted TiO2 reached 67.41% using these techniques. Next, a powder containing TiO2 in a certain percentage was used for paint production. Here, not only the amount of sludge decreased to as much as 70% but also the fresh paint required annually will be reduced by 21%. Furthermore, all heavy metals and toxic wastes will be removed as an environmental challenge.

The distinct effects of humic acid (HA, 0-10 mg L(-1)) on the transport of titanium dioxide (rutile) nanoparticles (nTiO(2)) through saturated sand columns were observed under conditions of environmental relevance (ionic strength 3-200 mM NaCl, pH 5.7 and 9.0). Specifically, the transport of nTiO(2) was dramatically enhanced in the presence of HA at pH 5.7, even at a low HA concentration of 1 mg L(-1). The mobility of nTiO(2) was further increased with greater concentrations of HA. In contrast, this enhancement of the nTiO(2) transportability due to the presence of HA was limited at pH 9.0 because of the negligible adsorption of HA onto nTiO(2), regardless of the concentrations of HA examined in this study. The distinct effects can be explained by the adsorption behaviors of HA to nTiO(2) and sand surfaces and the resulting interactions between nTiO(2) and sand surfaces under different conditions, which resulted in a large variation of the nTiO(2) transport and deposition behaviors at various conditions. In addition, theoretical interaction energy calculations and additional elution experiments indicate that the secondary energy minimum played an important role in controlling the nTiO(2) transport and deposition in porous media observed in this study. Moreover, the interaction energy calculations suggest that at pH 5.7, HA affected nTiO(2) transport by increasing the negative surface charge of nTiO(2) at low HA adsorption densities; whereas, combinations of increased electrostatic and steric interactions due to the presence of HA were the main mechanisms of enhanced transportability of nTiO(2) at high HA adsorption densities. Overall, results from this study suggest that natural organic matter and solution pH are likely key factors that govern the stability and mobility of nTiO(2) in the natural aquatic environment.

(44)Ti/(44)Sc radionuclide generators are of interest for molecular imaging. The 3.97 hours half-life of (44)Sc and its high positron branching of 94.27% may stimulate the application of (44)Sc-labeled PET radiopharmaceuticals. This review describes the current status of (44)Ti production, (44)Ti/(44)Sc radionuclide generator development, post-processing of generator eluates towards medical application, identification of ligands adequate to Sc(III) co-ordination chemistry, proof-of-principle labeling of (44)Sc-DOTA-octreotides, investigation of in vitro and in vivo parameters, and initial applications for molecular imaging - both in small animals and humans.

Paint sludge of car manufacturing industries are not disposed in landfills, since they contain hazardous materials with a high concentration of chromium, aluminum, titanium, barium, copper, Iron, magnesium, strontium, and so on. Thus, it is essential to find solutions in order to neutralize them or suggest cost-effective techniques, which are also environmentally acceptable. Because, this sludge contains considerable amounts of Ti pigments and unbaked resins, recycling these pigments--which could be used in a variety of industries such as paint factories--is an appropriate subject for further research. In this article, with the aim of identification of main pollutants in order to eliminate them and suggest a cost-effective solution to recover the sludge, a large number of tests including X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, X ray diffraction spectroscopy, and diffusion thermal analysis are conducted to determine types and concentration of elements, and combinations of paint sludge in car manufacturing industries. As titanium dioxide (TiO₂) is widely used as the main pigment of automobile paints, an optimal technique is suggested for extracting TiO₂ with high purity percentage through adopting scientific methods such as membrane and electrolysis.

The hybrid membrane photoreactor (MPR) combining a photoreactor irradiated with visible-light-emitting diode (vis-LED) and a cross-flow microfiltration (MF) membrane module was investigated in both closed-loop and continuous flow-through modes for the simultaneous degradation of penicillin G (PG) and separation of visible-light responsive TiO(2) particles, namely C-sensitized-N-doped TiO(2) (T300) and C-N-S tridoped TiO(2) (T0.05-450). The turbidity of permeate water was <0.2 NTU for both T300 and T0.05-450 suspensions in the MPR system operated at different transmembrane pressures (TMPs) and cross-flow velocities (CFVs), indicating effective separation of TiO(2) particles by the MF membrane. The operations at a higher TMP or lower CFV were more prone to induce TiO(2) deposition on the membrane surface without backwashing, which resulted in the membrane fouling, the loss of TiO(2) from the photoreactor and the decrease of PG photocatalytic degradation efficiency. 75% and 84% of PG were degraded in the closed-loop MPR without backwashing operated at 10 kPa and 0.15 m s(-1) after 4 h of vis-LED irradiation using 1.0 g L(-1) of T300 and T0.05-450, respectively. With backwashing of the membrane, the PG photocatalytic degradation efficiencies in the closed-loop MPR could be significantly enhanced to achieve 93% and 95% using 1.0 g L(-1) of T300 and T0.05-450, respectively, which were almost comparable to those achieved in the batch photoreactor. Due to its shorter hydraulic residence time in the photoreactor, the PG degradation efficiency in the continuous flow-through MPR with backwashing was lower than that achieved in the closed-loop MPR., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. The reticular hierarchical structure of butterfly wings (Papilio Paris) is introduced as template for Au/TiO(2) photocatalyst by depositing the Au nanoparticles on TiO(2) matrix, which is carried out by a water-ethanol sol-gel procedure combined with subsequent calcination. The obtained Au/TiO(2) nanocomposites present the reticular hierarchical structure of butterfly wings, and Au nanoparticles with an average size of 7 nm are homogeneously dispersed in TiO(2) substrate. Benefiting from such unique reticular hierarchical structure and composition, the biomorphic Au/TiO(2) exhibits high-harvesting capability and presents superior photocatalytic activity. Especially, the biomorphic Au/TiO(2) at the nominal content of gold to titanium of 8 wt% shows the highest photocatalytic activity and can completely decompose methyl orange within 80 min, which is obviously higher than that of commercial Degussa P25 powders., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier Inc. Serum transferrin (Tf) is an iron binding glycoprotein that plays a central role in the metabolism of this essential metal but it also binds other metal ions. Four main transferrin forms containing different iron binding states can be distinguished in human serum samples: monoferric (C-site or N-site), holotransferrin (with two Fe atoms) and apotransferrin (with no metal). Recently, it has been reported that Tf binds also Ti even more tightly than does Fe, in artificially Ti(iv) spiked solutions. However, very limited work has been done on the Ti binding to Tf at physiological concentrations in patients carrying intramedullary Ti nails. Here we report the chemical association of Ti to Tf "in vivo" under different chromatographic conditions by elemental mass spectrometry using double focusing inductively coupled plasma (DF-ICP-MS) as detector. For the separation of the Ti/Fe-Tf forms different gradient conditions have been explored. The observed results reveal that human serum Ti (from patients carrying intramedullary Ti nails) is uniquely associated to the N-lobe of Tf. The investigation of the influence of sialic acid in the carbohydrate chain of human serum Tf, studied by incubating the protein with neuraminidase (sialidase) to obtain the monosialilated species, revealed that the binding affinity of Ti was similar for monosialo-Tf and for native-Tf and occurs in the N-lobe. These results suggest that the species Fe(C)Ti(N)-TF might provide a route for Ti entry into cells via the transferrin receptors after the release of the metal from its implants.

Mesoporous silica containing a large amount of isolated Ti was prepared from an alkoxytitanosiloxane precursor through a hard template method. Isopropoxytris(tris-tert-butoxysiloxy)titanium (((i)PrO)Ti[OSi(O(t)Bu)(3)](3), TS3) was synthesized and TS3 was mixed with mesoporous carbon (CMK-3), a hard template. The mixture was pyrolyzed at 180 °C to form a composite consisting of titanosilica and the hard template. After calcination at 600 °C for the removal of the carbon template, the titanium species were not transformed to anatase TiO(2), proved by DR-UV-Vis, FTIR, XPS, and XRD, while the ESR results indicated the presence of isolated Ti. The mesoporous structure was verified by SEM, TEM, and N(2) adsorption. The Si/Ti ratio of the product was consistent with that of the precursor. All the results show that the material prepared from the precursor is ordered mesoporous silica containing a large amount of isolated Ti in the frameworks. The use of well-defined alkoxytitanosiloxane precursor leads to the formation of mesoporous silica with exactly controlled composition of titanium with neither loss of Ti nor transformation to anatase., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier Inc. The (44)Ti/(44)Sc (T(1/2)(44)Ti=60a) generator provides cyclotron-independent access to positron-emitting (44)Sc (T(1/2)=3.97d) for PET imaging. This work aims to post-elution processing of initial (44)Sc generator eluates in order to reduce its volume, HCl concentration and remove the oxalate anions. The on-line adsorption of (44)Sc on cationic resin AG 50W-X8 (200-400 mesh, H(+)-form) is achieved with >98% efficacy. Subsequently, the purified (44)Sc is desorbed by using 3ml of 0.25M ammonium acetate (pH=4.0). The post-processing takes 10min. The overall yield of the post-processing reached 90%, which is referred to the (44)Sc obtained from the (44)Ti/(44)Sc generator. In addition to the chemical purification, the content of (44)Ti breakthrough was further reduced by one order of magnitude. The 185MBq generator finally provides 150MBq of (44)Sc containing <10Bq of (44)Ti ready for labeling.

Recently, our group discovered an alternative titanium dioxide (TiO(2)) activation method that uses ultrasound irradiation (US/TiO(2)) instead of ultraviolet irradiation. The pre-S1/S2 protein from hepatitis B virus, which recognizes liver cells, was immobilized to the surface of TiO(2) nanoparticles using an amino-coupling method. The ability of the protein-modified TiO(2) nanoparticles to recognize liver cells was confirmed by surface plasmon resonance analysis and immuno-staining analyses. After uptake of TiO(2) nanoparticles by HepG2 cancer cells, the cells were injured using this US/TiO(2) method; significant cell injury was observed at an ultrasound irradiation intensity of 0.4 W/cm(2). Together with these results, this strategy could be applied to new cell injuring systems that use ultrasound irradiation in place of photodynamic therapy in the near future., (Copyright 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Fluoridated hydroxyapatite/titanium dioxide nanocomposite coating was successfully fabricated by a modified electrochemical deposition technique. F(-) ions, nanoscaled TiO(2) particles and 6% H(2)O(2) was added into the electrolyte, and ultrasonication was also performed to prepare this nanocomposite coating. The microstructure, phase composition, dissolution rate, bonding strength and in vitro cellular responses of the composite coating were investigated. The results show that the composite coating was uniform and dense owing to the effects of H(2)O(2) and ultrasonication. The thickness of the composite coating was ~5 mum and scanning electron microscopy revealed that nanoscaled TiO(2) particles were imbedded uniformly between FHA crystals. The addition of F(-) and TiO(2) reduced the crystallite size and increased the crystallinity of HA in FHA/TiO(2) composite coating. In addition, the composite coating shows higher bonding strength and lower dissolution rate than pure HA coating, and the in vitro bioactivity of FHA/TiO(2) composite coating was not affected as compared with pure HA coating.

The spark anodization behavior of alpha/beta Ti6Al4V and Ti6Al7Nb alloys and of alpha c.p. Ti in H2SO4, H3PO4, and mixtures of these acids was studied. Chemical depth profiling revealed oxides purified with respect to the substrate alloying elements. This was particularly pronounced on Ti alloys spark anodized in H2SO4/H3PO4 mixtures, the Al content decreasing continuously towards the surface, and V and Nb hardly detectable in the outermost 200 nm. The incorporation of S was significantly reduced in mixed electrolytes, while about 8 at-% P was present. A novel oxide morphology with "worm-like" features in the micrometer range, very different from well-known nano/microporous oxides, was found in mixed electrolytes under suitable conditions. Similar but more porous-like morphologies were formed on Ti. Simple alpha/beta substrate microstructural considerations cannot explain the morphological and chemical observations. Raman spectroscopy indicated the presence of mixed anatase, rutile, and brookite phase on anodized Ti alloys. Bond strengths of 34 MPa for worm-like and 40-50 MPa for nano/microporous morphologies as well as excellent abrasion behavior were found. The compatibility of grit-blasting with the spark anodization process for creating multitopography surfaces was demonstrated. To recover pigment grade TiO2, operating plants all over the world use chemical processes. Slag-based technology is considered to be attractive because of low waste generation and low chemical cost due to high titanium content and is poised to replace the conventional technology. This paper provides a review of the slag-based technology with the specific aim to produce leachable slag and achieving high titania yield from recovered wastes. Leachable oxides of the lower oxidation state, such as TiO and Ti2O3, facilitate the leaching process. However, during smelting these oxides increase the viscosity of the slag. Formation of titanium carbide or carbonitride is also not desirable as it leads to resistance to the leaching of titanium. This report highlights the problems and their possible solutions to obtain leachable slag.

One of the problems connected with wastewater treatment by the photocatalytic method in the presence of TiO2 suspension is necessity of the later catalyst separation. The method proposed by us for this purpose, consists in the usage of coagulation of TiO2 suspension with the aid of FeCl3, particularly in the cases when addition of the salt is used in order to intensification of the photocatalytic process. The effects of the TiO2 separation were studied from the mixtures, after photocatalytic Acid Orange 7 degradation, with dosage of FeCl3 at different stages of the process. The coagulation was carried out at different pH values as well as different FeCl3 concentrations. It was stated that nearly 100% of separation and simultaneously, nearly 100% of decolouration of the examined Acid Orange 7 solutions after their illumination in the presence of TiO2/FeCl3 and coagulation which was produced only by increasing of pH of the obtained mixtures, were nearly possible.

In this work, a simultaneous electrocoagulation/electrofiltration (EC/EF) treatment module was employed to treat nanosized TiO2-containing wastewater. Nanosized TiO2-containing wastewater was obtained and treated by a self-designed EC/EF treatment module. To evaluate the performance of this novel treatment module, the effects of electric field strength (EFS), transmembrane pressure (TMP), and crossflow velocity (CV) on permeate qualities were investigated. Permeate qualities of concern included pH, turbidity, conductivity, chemical oxygen demand (COD), and total organic carbon (TOC). A full factorial design of experiments was adopted in this work. First, by keeping TMP and CV constant the effects of EFS on permeate qualities were studied. In this set of testing, it was noticed that an application of electric field greatly increased the filtration rate, which was further influenced by the magnitude of EFS. In all cases, the filtration rate decreased as the treatment time elapsed due mainly to fouling of the membrane. Further tests were conducted to study the effects of TMP on permeate qualities by keeping EFS and CV constant. Finally, the effects of CV on permeate qualities were studied by keeping EFS and TMP constant. It was found that the optimal operating conditions would be electric field strength of 166.7 V/cm, transmembrane pressure of 1 kgf/cm2, and crossflow velocity of 0.22cm/s. Under such conditions, permeate would have the following qualities: (1) pH, 6.32; (2) turbidity, 2.41 NTU; (3) conductivity, 15.11 microS/cm; (4) COD, 100.0 mg/L; and (5) TOC, 512.6 mg/L.

The metallo-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) technique has been applied to the preparation of the photocatalyst titanium dioxide supported on activated carbon. The effects of various condition parameters such as carrier gas flow rate, source temperature and deposition temperature on the deposition rate were investigated. The maximum deposition rate of 8.2 mg/(g x h) was obtained under conditions of carrier gas flow rate of 400 ml/min, source temperature of 423 K and deposition temperature of 913 K. The deposition rate followed Arrhenius behavior at temperature of 753 K to 913 K, corresponding to activation energy E(a) of 51.09 kJ/mol. TiO(2) existed only in anatase phase when the deposition temperature was 773 K to 973 K. With increase of deposition temperature from 1073 K to 1273 K, the rutile content sharply increased from 7% to 70%. It was found that a deposition temperature of 773 K and a higher source temperature of 448 K resulted in finely dispersed TiO(2) particles, which were mainly in the range of 10-20 nm.

The biocompatibility of metallic implant surfaces is governed in large part by the interfacial kinetics associated with metal release and protein binding. The kinetics of metal release from, and protein binding to, cobalt- and titanium-based implant alloys in human serum were investigated by (1). measuring the temporal release of Cr and Ti into serum from Co-Cr-Mo (ASTM F-75) and Ti implant alloys (Ti-6Al-4V: ASTM F136, and commercially pure Ti, cpTi: ASTM F67), respectively; (2). examining the composition of human serum proteins adsorbed onto the surfaces of Co- and Ti-based implant alloys; and (3). identifying the serum proteins associated with the binding of soluble Cr and Ti degradation products. Analysis of metal dissolution kinetics found that Cr was released from Co-based implant alloy at an order of magnitude higher than Ti was released from Ti-based implant alloys. Serum became saturated with soluble CR and Ti at levels as high as 3250 ng/mL Ti from cpTi; 3750 ng/mL Ti from Ti-6Al-4V; and 35400 ng/mL Cr from Co-Cr-Mo degradation. The observation that human serum binds more released metal from Co-based alloy dissolution was consistent with the observed differences in biofilm composition between the two alloys, where additional serum protein(s) of approximately approximately 140 (kDa) molecular weight were detected on Co-based implant alloy surfaces. However, both Cr and Ti released from Co- and Ti-based alloys exhibited a bimodal binding pattern to both low molecular weight serum protein(s) (<32 kDa), and to higher molecular weight protein(s) in the 180-250 kDa range. Identification of metal alloy-dependent biofilm compositions and dissolution products provides the basis for understanding the bioavailability and bioreactivity of these implant alloys and their degradation products., (Copyright 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

Anatase-type titanium dioxide (TiO(2)) was encapsulated using an Shirasu porous glass (SPG) membrane emulsification technique and followed by solvent evaporation. The oil phase, consisting of fine#10; powder of anatase TiO(2), Disperbyk-180, the hydrophobic oil phase additive, and polymer wall solution, was pushed through the membrane pores into the aqueous phase of poly(vinyl alcohol) and sodium dodecyl sulfate to form the solid-in-oil-in water, (S/O)/W, emulsion droplets. Three types of styrene-based copolymer poly(styrene-co-acrylic acid) (PS-AA), poly(styrene-co-2-ethyl hexyl acrylate) (PS-2EHA) and poly(styrene-co-dimethyl aminoethylmethacrylate) (PS-DMAEMA) were used as an encapsulating shell. Uniform droplets were successfully obtained by modifying the oil phase using methyl laurate or hexadecanol as the oil phase additive, together with carefully monitoring the emulsification flow rate during the emulsification. The (S/O)/W emulsion was gently stirred in a sealed reactor, and evacuation of solvent started under moderate heating with increasing a vacuum intensity. Those uniform-sized TiO(2) microcapsules revealed fine porous morphologies on their surfaces as a result of a mild phase separation induced from the addition of the oil phase additive. The encapsulation efficiency was influenced by the stability of TiO(2) in the oil phase, the polymer wall employed, and the operational control of the glass membrane emulsification process. The membrane emulsification process could prepare the TiO(2) microcapsules with about approximately 6-8.5 wt% of encapsulation loadings. PS-AA and PS-2EHA copolymers provided better encapsulation efficiency compared to PS-DMAEMA. SPG membranes with 1.42, 2.8, 5.25, 7.0, or 9.5 microm were employed and 2-20 microm microcapsules were subsequently obtained.

In Polyethylene glycol-ammonium sulfate-chrome azurol S two-phase aqueous systems, the liquid-liquid extraction behavior of Ti(IV), Zr(IV) and La(III) with chrome azurol S as the extractant was investigated. Experimental result indicated that the complex of La(III) with CAS was almost completely extracted by the PEG phase, Zr(IV) partly extracted, while Ti(IV) was not extracted from the aqueous solution of pH 4.5-7.0. So extraction separation of Ti(IV)-La(III) was carried out at pH 5.5. Comparing to a general water phase spectrophotometry, the new method has advantage of maximum wavelength of complex shifted to the red wavelength, existing form of complex anion in PEG phase was studied by the addition of surface-active agent and the measurement of absorption spectra.

Characterizations of Ti-B binary oxide thin films by means of various spectroscopic measurements have shown that Ti-B binary oxide thin films are formed by ultra fine TiO2 nanoparticles. A dramatic decrease in the contact angle of water droplets to 0 degree under ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation and a return to only half of its initial value under dark conditions were observed for the Ti-B binary oxide thin films. Moreover, ultraviolet irradiation of these thin film photocatalysts in the presence of NO led to photocatalytic decomposition of NO into N2 and O2. Especially when the Ti content was low, the size of the primary nanoparticles of the thin films was smaller and the photocatalytic reaction proceeded efficiently with a high selectivity for the formation of N2 and O2 from NO.

Bioactive composites composed of hydroxyapatite containing glass (HA-G) as a coating and titanium (Ti) or titanium alloy implants as a substrate were prepared by the Cullet method. This method results in the HA-G coating layer on the substrate with a compositional gradient in HA concentration. The results of in vitro and in vivo experiments investigating the characteristics of the composite materials are reported and discussed in this article. In vitro evaluations confirmed that the Cullet method was suitable for the preparation of the functionally gradient composite implants with higher reliable quality. In vivo experiments permitted evaluation of bonding strength of these composite implants to living bone tissue. Mechanical pull-out tests indicated that the implants bonded to living bone at least as firmly as those by the conventional method, and that the adhesion between the HA-G coating layer and metal substrate was well integrated and strongly maintained in vivo. SEM observations with EDX and a histological study of the interface between the HA-G-Ti composite implants and bone tissue revealed not only that the implants bonded to bone directly without any intervening tissue but that bone ingrowth into the HA-G layer occurred. The HA-G-Ti composite implants demonstrate both biocompatible and osteoconductive characteristics, and may be expected to obtain good and lasting results when applied clinically.

The simplest field flow fractionation technique, which uses the earth's gravity as the external field is applied to isolate two populations, which differ in both shape and size, from a polydisperse sub-micron TiO2 powder of homogenous density. The fraction eluted first is spherical with an average diameter of 0.31 microm while the second fraction is ellipsoidal and can be associated with a 0.45 microm hydrodynamic diameter. Elution conditions appeared to be very sensitive to electrolyte and surfactant characteristics in the carrier phase as well as on the sample concentration. Using 25 microl (1%, w/w) sample suspension, separations of spherical from ovoid particles was performed in almost 2 h with a mobile phase of 0.001 M KNO3-0.01% (v/v) Fl-70 in water in a 0.025-cm thick channel made of polystyrene walls.

Equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) has been used to refine the grain size of commercially pure (CP) titanium as well as other metals and alloys. CP-Ti is usually processed at about 400 degrees C because it lacks sufficient ductility at lower temperature. The warm processing temperature limits the ability of the ECAP technique to improve the strength of CP-Ti. We have employed cold deformation following warm ECAP to further improve the strength of CP-Ti. Ti billets were first processed for eight passes via ECAP route Bc, with a clockwise rotation of 90 degrees between adjacent passes. The grain size obtained by ECAP alone is about 260 nm. The billets were further processed by cold deformation (cold rolling) to increase the crystalline defects such as dislocations. The strength of pure Ti was improved from 380 to around 1000 MPa by the two-step process. This article reports the microstructures, microhardness, tensile properties, and thermal stability of these Ti billets processed by a combination of ECAP and cold deformation.

This study focuses on the separation of titanium dioxide from water by cross-flow microfiltration (CMF) within wastewater treatment by photocatalysis using slurry reactor systems. The systematic studies have shown that the separation performance of TiO2 particles is strongly affected by cross-flow velocity, transmembrane pressure, feed concentration, pH of the suspension and ionic strength. An extreme sensitivity to pH and electrolyte concentration indicates the importance of interfacial effects in solid-liquid separation of TiO2 particles. Under optimal conditions, permeate fluxes of up to 1250 l m-2 h-1, approaching those of pure water, could be obtained with a polypropylene membrane which is not sensitive to abrasion. The obtained results makes TiO2 separation by cross-flow microfiltration attractive in solar-catalytic detoxification.

The objective of the investigation was to study the basic problems related to the firing of dental porcelain to commercially pure titanium. The firing of a low-fusing porcelain to sandblasted or electrolytically polished titanium was carried out in an ordinary dental furnace. The interfacial regions between the ceramic coatings and titanium were analyzed using scanning acoustic microscopy (C-SAM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. Thermal stresses in the joints were evaluated by means of a finite element model based on multilayer elastic strain analysis. The chemical reactions and their formation sequence at 750 degrees C was predicted thermodynamically and observed experimentally both at 750 and 800 degrees C. The C-SAM results gave evidence that the integrity of the porcelain-titanium joints are better in the sandblasted samples than in the electropolished ones, where defects were larger. SEM analyses of the same samples confirmed the C-SAM findings. Because the reaction layers are more continuous in the electropolished samples, cracks propagated more readily in these samples during the cooling procedure. Both thermodynamic calculations and experimental chemical analyses strongly indicate that the cause for the cracking of the reaction zone is thin layer of Ti (oxo)silicide and/or a relatively thick solid solution layer of Ti and oxygen.
