This report presents the algorithms for computing the Hadamard product, its residual, and its dual residual between formal power series in the dioid of counters. The algorithms have been implemented in the C++ toolbox ETVO ((Event|Time)-Variant Operators). 19. A Preliminary Investigation of Provider Attitudes toward a Transdiagnostic Treatment: Outcomes from Training Workshops with the Unified Protocol

Abstract

Evidence-based psychological treatments (EBPTs) for common mental health conditions are efficacious but remain underutilized in clinical service settings. Novel transdiagnostic and modular approaches that treat several disorders simultaneously promise to address common barriers to the dissemination and implementation of traditional EBPTs. Despite the promise that transdiagnostic treatments hold, the claims that these interventions can be more easily disseminated and implemented have not been widely tested. The present study examined whether a transdiagnostic treatment, the Unified Protocol (UP), addresses some barriers to dissemination and implementation for clinicians. Exploratory aims of the current study were to examine the effects of a UP introductory training workshop on clinician attitudes and behaviors by: (1) evaluating UP knowledge and treatment delivery, (2) determining relationships between clinician characteristics and their knowledge acquisition, satisfaction with UP, and UP penetration, and (3) exploring clinicians' perceptions of the UP's characteristics utilizing mixed methods. Workshop participants showed a good understanding of UP treatment concepts following training, and over a third of survey respondents reported use of the intervention 6-months after training. Positive attitudes toward EBPTs and fewer years of clinical practice were associated with greater satisfaction with the UP. Clinicians held positive views of the UP's flexibility and relative advantage over standard EBPTs but held negative views toward the manual's design and packaging. Overall, our findings suggest that clinicians may view transdiagnostic treatments such as the UP favorably and may consider them appealing over standard EBPTs. However, barriers associated with traditional EBPTs may extend to transdiagnostic treatments like the UP.

Abstract

The discovery of analog LixNbO2 memristors revealed a promising new memristive mechanism wherein the diffusion of Li+ rather than O2- ions enables precise control of the resistive states. However, directly correlating lithium concentration with changes to the electronic structure in active layers remains a challenge and is required to truly understand the underlying physics. Chemically delithiated single crystals of LiNbO2 present a model system for correlating lithium variation with spectroscopic signatures from operando soft x-ray spectroscopy studies of device active layers. Using electronic structure modeling of the x-ray spectroscopy of LixNbO2 single crystals, we demonstrate that the intrinsic memristive behavior in LixNbO2 active layers results from field-induced degenerate p-type doping. We show that electrical operation of LixNbO2-based memristors is viable even at marginal Li deficiency and that the analog memristive switching occurs well before the system is fully metallic. This study serves as a benchmark for material synthesis and characterization of future LixNbO2-based memristor devices and suggests that valence change switching is a scalable alternative that circumvents the electroforming typically required for filamentary-based memristors.

30. Oral Communication Competency across the Virginia Community College System: A Faculty-Designed Assessment

Abstract

A full-scale oral communication assessment was conducted by the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) during the academic year 2013-14. Key components of this assessment included faculty involvement at all stages of assessment and collaboration with assessment coordinators and lead staff personnel. The VCCS Office of Institutional Research and Effectiveness partnered with CST faculty experts to design the assessment. The Competent Speaker Speech Evaluation Form, a standardized and tested instrument used to assess public speaking competency in higher education, was used to evaluate student speeches. Designed by the National Communication Association, this instrument identifies eight competencies for measurement. The results of this assessment indicate that over 70% of students assessed who graduated with an associate degree from a Virginia community college have proficient oral communication skills. This project demonstrates that assessment can be a shared endeavor in which results can be understood and used to inform curricular planning by all major stakeholders.
