Abstract

X-shooter is the first 2nd generation instrument of the ESO Very Large Telescope(VLT). It is a very efficient, single-target, intermediate-resolution spectrograph that was installed at the Cassegrain focus of UT2 in 2009. The instrument covers, in a single exposure, the spectral range from 300 to 2500 nm. It is designed to maximize the sensitivity in this spectral range through dichroic splitting in three arms with optimized optics, coatings, dispersive elements and detectors. It operates at intermediate spectral resolution (R~4,000 - 17,000, depending on wavelength and slit width) with fixed echelle spectral format (prism cross-dispersers) in the three arms. It includes a 1.8"x4" Integral Field Unit as an alternative to the 11" long slits. A dedicated data reduction package delivers fully calibrated two-dimensional and extracted spectra over the full wavelength range. We describe the main characteristics of the instrument and present its performance as measured during commissioning, science verification and the first months of science operations., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A

10. Resilient DenCity: Building With Water

Abstract

This thesis is part of a bigger project called Resilient DenCity, which is the title of a group project taking place at TU Delft and more specifically within Explore Lab 19 and it is conducted by four students: Cosimo Conserva (Public Realm), Matteo Ferrarese (Green Network), Vince Marchetto (Density) Mattia Tintori (Multi purpose flood protection). The starting point of Resilient DenCity is global climate change and consequent sea level rise. The project aims to respond to the changing needs of our society in terms of waterfront protection and improvement focusing on Jersey City, NJ, USA waterfront. Hurricane Sandy enlighten the fact that the entire NYC metropolitan area needs improvement regarding flood defense in order to be prepared for future extreme events and climate change projected scenarios. Therefore a plan, that allows the private sector to profit as an incentive for building critical water management infrastructure, should be developed. Land reclamation from the Hudson River is then utilised to pay for the infrastructure costs, while the private sector still profits from new waterfront real estate., Explore Lab, Architecture and The Built Environment

Abstract

The mirrors of the International X-ray Observatory (IXO) were based on of a large number of high quality segments, aiming at achieving a global spatial resolution better than 5 arcsec (HEW). A study concerning the slumping of thin glass foils for the IXO mirrors is under development in Europe, funded by ESA and led by the Brera Observatory and is continuing even after that the programhas been descoped, in the perspective of using the technology under development for other future missions. After a preliminary trade-off study, we have focused our the effort on the "Direct" slumping approach, based on the use of convex moulds. In this case during the thermal cycle the optical surface of the glass is in direct contact with the mould surface. The thin plates are made of thin glass sheets (0.4 mm thick), with a reflecting area of 200 mm × 200 mm. The adopted integration process foresees the use of reinforcing ribs for bonding together the plates and forming in that way a rigid and stiff stack of segmented mirror shells; the stack is supported by a thick backplane. During the bonding process the plates are constrained to stay in close contact with the surface of the master (i.e. the same mould used for the hot slumping process) by the application of vacuum pump suction. In this way the spring-back deformations and low frequency errors still present on the foil profile after slumping can be corrected. In this paper we will give an overview and a status report of the project.

Abstract

The International X-ray Observatory (IXO) is a joint mission concept studied by the ESA, NASA, and JAXA space agencies. The main goal of the mission design is to achieve a large effective area (>2.5m2at 1 keV) and a good angular resolution (5 arcsec HEW at 1 keV) at the same time. The Brera Astronomical Observatory - INAF (Italy), under the support of ESA, is developing a method for the realization of the X-Ray Optical Units, based on the use of slumped thin glass segments to form densely packed modules in a Wolter type I optical configuration. In order to reach the very challenging integration requirements, it has been developed an innovative assembly approach for aligning and mounting the IXO mirror segments. The method is based on the use of an integration mould for each foil. In particular the glass segment is forced to adhere to the integration mould in order to maintain the optimal figure without deformations until the integration of the foil in the stack is completed. In this way an active correction for major existing figure errors after slumping is also achieved. Moreover reinforcing ribs are used in order to connect the facets to each-other and to realize a robust monolithic stack of plates. In this paper we present the design, the development and the validation status of a special Integration Machine (IMA) that has been specifically developed to allow the integration of the Plate Pairs into prototypal X-Ray Optical Unit stacks.

Abstract

The design of the interferometric test of the adaptive M4 Unit of E-ELT, a deformable six petals 2.4 m mirror, will be described. The actual baseline follows a macro-stitching approach, where each segment is separately flattened and co-phased to the other petals. The optical test setup for the single shell consists in a Newtonian system, with a 1.5 m parabolic mirror as main collimator. A 0.6 m reference flat mirror is foreseen to verify the alignment of the interferometric cavity. A Demonstration Prototype of the final M4 Unit, a 222 actuators, two shells deformable mirror, has been produced by Microgate and A.D.S. International. Results of the optical measurement campaign performed in INAF on the prototype mirror are reported.

Abstract

In the design process of large adaptive mirrors numerical simulations represent the first step to evaluate the system design compliance in terms of performance, stability and robustness. For the next generation of Extremely Large Telescopes increased system dimensions and bandwidths lead to the need of modeling not only the deformable mirror alone, but also all the system supporting structure or even the full telescope. The capability to perform the simulations with an acceptable amount of time and computational resources is highly dependent on finding appropriate methods to reduce the size of the resulting dynamic models. In this paper we present a framework developed together with the company Microgate to create a reduced order structural model of a large adaptive mirror as a preprocessing step to the control system simulations. The reduced dynamic model is then combined with the remaining system components allowing to simulate the full adaptive mirror in a computationally efficient way.
