Hearing aids (HAs), especially those with sound generators (SGs), are used in the management of tinnitus. However, their comparative efficacies and long-term outcomes remain unknown. Therefore, we investigated the efficacy and long-term outcomes of tinnitus therapy using various HA SG models. We retrospectively reviewed 666 patients with chronic tinnitus characterized by persistent symptoms for >6 months. At the initial visit, the patients received educational counselling on tinnitus (Utsunomiya method) and completed a comprehensive questionnaire comprising the tinnitus handicap inventory, a visual analog scale, the state–trait anxiety inventory, and the emotional intelligence scale. The scores were compared among various models of HA SGs and SGs. The patients underwent follow-ups for up to 2 years. Our results indicated that tinnitus retraining therapy using SGs and conventional HAs effectively managed chronic tinnitus. The prolonged use of HAs appeared to exacerbate tinnitus symptoms, emphasizing the superior long-term effectiveness of SG HAs, particularly ZEN (Widex ZEN, WS Audiology, Lynge, Denmark). Our findings indicate that HAs are useful in the first year, but their prolonged use may exacerbate tinnitus symptoms, whereas HA SGs are effective in the long term. Future studies should account for the variations in tinnitus treatment effects based on the type of sound employed.

This study was done to study the effect of Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT) in Bilateral Normal Hearing Individual with subjective tinnitus and to evaluate the success of simplified TRT with relation to duration of tinnitus, the patient's age and state of mind. As on date there is no definite cure available for tinnitus, so current TRT focuses on reducing the impact of tinnitus on the patient's quality of life. This study included total fifty (50) participants with bilateral normal hearing sensitivity, who had reported to the department of ENT with a complaint of tinnitus in one or both ears. All the participants are active serving military personnel and their dependents of Indian Armed Forces. All the participants had undergone basic audiological test batteries to assess the hearing acuity followed by TRT and its components (TRT counselling and sound therapy) in randomized manner. Audiological test batteries include pure tone audiometry to make sure that the participants have normal hearing acuity in both the ears and then tinnitus matching i.e. pitch and loudness match and measurement of Uncomfortable Level (UCL) followed by sound therapy and counselling. There was significant improvement reported in impact of tinnitus after completion of six (06) months of TRT schedule. Amongst the participants, 40% reported with complete relief from tinnitus, 30% reported with remarkable benefit but they can still perceive the tinnitus, 20% reported with no benefit with TRT and rest of the 10% were not able to tell whether they have got any benefit or not. Normal hearing individual with tinnitus can be benefitted with TRT accompanied with counselling and the improvement in impact of tinnitus severity that ensued over six months of TRT appear to be vigorous with significant clinical outcomes. The knowledge base is evaluated by the accuracy, coverage, and explainability of diagnostics predictions and treatment recommendations. Results: The ML methods were applied to a clinical dataset of tinnitus patients from the Tinnitus and Hyperacusis Center at Emory University School of Medicine, which describes 555 patients and 3,000 visits. The validated ML classification models for diagnosis and rules: association and actionable treatment patterns were embedded into the knowledge base of CDSS. Background and Aim: Tinnitus is a subjective auditory symptom referred to the perception of sound in the absence of external stimuli, and there is no definite treatment for it. Rehabilitation methods and laser therapy have been recommended used for its management. This study aimed to investigate the photobiological effects of lowlevel laser therapy (LLLT) and tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT) in patients with acoustic traumainduced tinnitus. Methods: This clinical trial was conducted on 60 patients suffering from acoustic trauma-induced tinnitus for more than six months, divided into three groups of LLLT, TRT and LLLT + TRT. The Persian version of tinnitus handicap inventory (P-THI), visual analog scale (VAS), and loudness match (LM) scale were used to collect data. The collected data were analyzed in SPSS version.22 software. The effect of time, group and time × group on the scores of VAS, LM, P-THI and its subscales were examined. Results: There was a statistically significant difference between LLLT + TRT and LLLT groups after intervention in terms of LM (p = 0.002) and VAS (p = 0.001) variables, but no statistical significance for P-THI and its subscales (p = 0.442) was found. Conclusion: Combination of LLLT and TRT, as a therapeutic protocol, is recommended due to their remarkable effects in reducing acoustic trauma-induced tinnitus symptoms. Objective: Tinnitus is the annoying sensation of sound perception without acoustic stimulus. Tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT) is the habituation therapy used for the management of chronic subjective tinnitus. The objective of the study is to describe TRT and to evaluate its efficacy in patients with subjective tinnitus.Methods: In total, 58 patients with tinnitus who did not respond to medications were enrolled in the TRT program. TRT included counseling as described in the neurophysiological model of tinnitus and sound therapy (aided or unaided) for six months. The tinnitus severity grade (TSG) 1–5, based on a validated tinnitus questionnaire score (TQS), and the visual analogue scale (VAS) score were documented before and after therapy.Results: Before TRT, 53 patients (91.3%) exhibited TSG 3–5, and the average VAS score was 6.7±2.1. After TRT for two months, 49 patients (84.4%) showed TSG 1–3, and the average VAS score was 3.2±2.4. After six months of TRT, most of the patients found remarkable improvement in the symptoms, and 51 patients (87.9%) exhibited TSG 1–2, and the average VAS score was 2.1±2.6. Statistically significant difference was found in TSG and VAS score before and after TRT. Statistically significant correlation was observed between TSG and VAS score.Conclusion: TRT is an useful approach for amelioration of tinnitus. TQS is a very effective, cheap, and easy method to help otologists to grade the patients as per the severity of symptoms.

Abstract Background Patients suffering from chronic, subjective tinnitus are on a quest to find a cure or any form of alleviation for their persistent complaint. Current recommended therapy forms provide psychotherapeutic interventions that are intended to train the patient how to deal with the tinnitus sound. Pharmaceutical managements are used to reduce secondary effects of the tinnitus sound such as sleep deprivation, emotional and concentration difficulties, but these treatments do not cure the tinnitus. Recent studies have shown that Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT) significantly improves the quality of life for tinnitus patients. Furthermore, several studies have reported that cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) relieves a substantial amount of distress by changing dysfunctional cognitions. However, when the tinnitus causes great interference with daily functioning, these treatment methods are not always sufficiently effective. Recent insights show that Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) is a highly effective therapy for medically unexplained symptoms such as chronic pain and phantom pain. In scientific research, tinnitus is compared to phantom limb pain. Starting from tinnitus as a phantom percept we therefore aim to demonstrate that the operating mechanisms of EMDR may also be an effective treatment method for patients with subjective tinnitus. The aim of this randomized controlled study with blind evaluator is to examine the effect of EMDR compared to CBT in chronic tinnitus patients. To our knowledge, there are no other studies that evaluate both methods simultaneously. Methods/design A total of 166 patients with subjective, chronic, non-pulsatile tinnitus will be randomized in two treatment groups: TRT + CBT versus TRT + EMDR. The experimental group will receive the bimodal therapy TRT/EMDR and the active control group will receive the bimodal therapy TRT/CBT. Evaluations will take place at baseline before therapy, at the end of the treatment and 3 months after therapy. The score on the Tinnitus Functional Index (TFI) will be used as the primary outcome measurement. Secondary outcome measurements are the Visual Analogue Scale of Loudness (VAS), Tinnitus Questionnaire (TQ), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Hyperacusis Questionnaire (HQ), psychoacoustic measurements and event-related potentials (ERP). Discussion The objective is to evaluate whether the bimodal therapy TRT and EMDR can provide faster and/or more relief from the annoyance experienced in chronic tinnitus patients’ daily lives compared to the bimodal therapy TRT and CBT. So far there has been no prospective, randomized controlled, clinical trial with blind evaluator that compares CBT and EMDR as a treatment for tinnitus. Decreased sound tolerance (DST) is a negative reaction to environmental sounds and is estimated to affect 3.5% of the population. This case report presents the evaluation and management of an adult female with severe, longstanding misophonia. Her evaluation included comprehensive audiometric testing (including uncomfortable loudness levels) and a detailed assessment of the impact of DST on her life. She enrolled in tinnitus retraining therapy and began receiving treatment aiming to facilitate habituation of bothersome environmental sounds. This case was complicated by the advent of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and a telemedicine hybrid approach was employed to increase access to audiologic care. Using this structure, some appointments occurred in person in the clinic and others occurred via a telemedicine video visit format. Telemedicine video visits facilitated in-depth discussions, afforded the opportunity to answer questions, and provided the option of cloud-based remote programming of on-ear devices. The current study aims to determine whether a bimodal therapy for chronic, subjective tinnitus consisting of the combination of TRT and eye movement desensitization reprocessing (EMDR) results in a clinically significant different efficacy in comparison with the prevailing bimodal TRT and CBT therapy.MethodsPatients were randomized in two treatment groups. The experimental group received the bimodal therapy TRT/EMDR and the active control group received the bimodal therapy TRT/CBT. Evaluations took place at baseline (T0), at the end of the treatment (T1), and 3 months after therapy (T2). The tinnitus functional index (TFI) was used as primary outcome measurement. The total score on the TQ, HADS, HQ, and VASLoudness all demonstrated significant decrease after treatment and follow-up (p < 0.001) in the experimental and the active control group. GPE-measurements revealed that more than 80% (i.e., 84% in TRT/CBT vs. 80% in TRT/EMDR) of the patients experienced substantial improvement of tinnitus at follow up. Treatment outcome remained stable after 3 month follow-up and no adverse events were observed.ConclusionBoth psychotherapeutic protocols result in a clinically significant improvement for patients with chronic subjective tinnitus. Tinnitus often described as sound in the ear in absence of any external stimulus. It poses a challenge to the psychological and mental wellbeing of the patient and professional unsatisfaction to the clinician. The patient often an old aged individual usually approaches the outpatient department with various sounds in the ear, making him feel ill or unable to have a sound sleep. The middle-aged patient often complains of professional incapability and lack of concentration due to tinnitus. Despite vast academic research and advances, the efficiency of available treatment is debatable, often compelling the clinician to convey the message that "you may have to learn to live with it". In the present overview of reviews, we tend to look into the management of tinnitus and present a comprehensive outlook of various evidence-based reviews from Cochrane and augmented with various studies from PubMed. Although tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT) based on Jastreboff’s classical neurophysiological model is efficacious in most patients, its effects on the cortical activity changes responsible for the improvement of tinnitus are still unclear. In this study, we compared pre- and post-TRT resting-state quantitative electroencephalography (rs-qEEG) findings to identify power changes that could explain TRT-induced improvements. Thirty-seven patients with severe tinnitus were enrolled in the study, and rs-qEEG data recorded before the initial TRT sessions and 6 months after TRT were compared. In addition, associations between the changes in qEEG and percentage improvements in Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) scores and numeric rating scale (NRS) scores of tinnitus loudness and tinnitus perception were examined. The mean THI score decreased significantly 6 months after the initial TRT session. Also, significant improvements were observed 6 months after the initial TRT session compared with the pre-treatment scores in NRS loudness, distress, and perception. As compared with the pre-TRT status, post-TRT 6 months status showed significantly decreased powers in the left primary and secondary auditory cortices for the gamma frequency band. Changes in the alpha 1 frequency band power in the right insula and orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) appeared to be positively correlated with the percentage changes in NRS distress. These results suggested that TRT improved tinnitus-related distress by reducing the power of the top-down autonomic response modulator or peripheral physiological responses to emotional experiences. That is, TRT induced habituation via modulation of functional connections between the auditory system and the limbic and autonomic nervous systems. Our results confer additional basis for understanding the neurophysiological model and the newly suggested integrative model of tinnitus by De Ridder et al. (2014) in the context of the long-term efficacy of TRT.

Tinnitus retraining therapy involves masking of tinnitus at sound perception level in combination with structured counselling sessions. To assess efficacy of Tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT) in Patients of Tinnitus with Sensori Neural Hearing loss. Prospective study was carried out on patients who presented with Tinnitus in ENT OPD from December 2015 to December 2016. Severity of tinnitus was documented using Tinnitus handicap inventory scale. Response to tinnitus is evaluated at the end of 3 months. In our study 57 patients in age group 21-78 years were selected and Tinnitus retraining therapy was administered. Most of patients had moderate (75.43%) perception of tinnitus before initiation of therapy. After completion of therapy tinnitus completely disappeared in 34 (59.65%) patients. Improvement in Tinnitus perception was observed in total of 49 (85.96%) patients. There was no improvement in Tinnitus perception in 8 (14.03%) patients. TRT aims in reducing the tinnitus perception by inducing habituation of tinnitus-induced reactions allowing patients to achieve control over their tinnitus, live a normal life, and participate in everyday activities. The score on the Tinnitus Functional Index (TFI) will be used as the primary outcome measurement. Secondary outcome measurements are the Visual Analogue Scale of Loudness (VAS), Tinnitus Questionnaire (TQ), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Hyperacusis Questionnaire (HQ), psychoacoustic measurements and event-related potentials (ERP).Discussion: The objective is to evaluate whether the bimodal therapy TRT and EMDR can provide faster and/or more relief from the annoyance experienced in chronic tinnitus patients' daily lives compared to the bimodal therapy TRT and CBT. Tinnitus is a phantom auditory perception that occurs in humans. Tinnitus, which is a distressing problem affecting many people around the world, is commonly referred to as ringing in the ears. No effective drug therapy is available for this elusive disease, although much research work into mechanism and possible treatment is underway. As yet, there are no Food and Drug Administration approved drugs available and the quest for a new treatment option for tinnitus focus on important challenges in tinnitus management. A number of options have been used to treat patients with tinnitus, but outcomes have been limited. A new, curative modality will provide a turning point in the management of tinnitus. The purpose of this review article is to discuss the pathophysiology, global burden, current treatment, and prevention of tinnitus, with future prospective studies in new drug therapy for this elusive condition.

Objective: The objective of this research was to study the ability of Mismatch Negativity response parameters to assess the habituation after Tinnitus Retraining Therapy through comparing MMN parameters before and after TRT and comparing MMN in tinnitus patients to non-tinnitus patients, and correlating MMN parameters to subjective measures of tinnitus. Methodology: This research included two groups: a tinnitus group of 30 tinnitus patients who were compared with a control group that consisted of well-matched 10 normal adult subjects. All participants were subjected to full history taking, audiological examination, and MMN test. Tinnitus patients were further assessed for tinnitus severity using the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI), tinnitus analyses including pitch and loudness matching, with the PMF as the deviant stimulus for the MMN test. Results: The MMN latencies were significantly shorter and the MMN amplitudes were significantly greater in the tinnitus group before TRT than the control group. The MMN amplitude after TRT has significantly decreased and the MMN latency has significantly been prolonged in both ears after TRT compared with before TRT. The MMN amplitude improvement matched the subjective improvement measured subjectively by the THI. Conclusion: Tinnitus patients showed abnormality in central auditory processing mechanisms involved in pre-attentive change detection of tinnitus-related neuronal activity. This MMN abnormality showed improvement after habituation using TRT. So, we recommend adding the MMN test in evaluating tinnitus patients objectively before and after TRT for monitoring the treatment progress, together with the usual subjective measures for assessment of the degree of tinnitus severity. Background: Tinnitus is a perception of an auditory sensation without the presence of an external sound. It has devastating impact on the quality of life and psychosocial aspect of the sufferer. Mechanisms of tinnitus not clear; however, its management include counselling, hearing aids, tinnitus masking, relaxation therapy, cognitive behaviour therapy and tinnitus retraining therapy. Objective: To conduct a scoping review to explore the role of counselling, hearing aids, tinnitus masking, relaxation therapy, cognitive-behavioural therapy and tinnitus retraining therapy in India. To also provide an overview of efficacy of these approaches in tinnitus management. Research Design: Scoping review. Study Sample: Experimental studies, follow-up assessments, and reviews assessing tinnitus treatment approaches were identified as a result of an electronic database met search. Results: The evidence suggests that all tinnitus management programs have their unique benefits in the treatment of tinnitus. Given the confounding variables that include length of therapy, tinnitus severity and subject population, the overall level of evidence is equivocal. Nonetheless, the efficacy of CBT appears reasonably established and combined approach (masking + counselling + attention diversion) appears to be most promising for audiologists for future tinnitus management. A common ground of therapeutic elements was established and evidence was found to be robust enough to guide clinical practice. Conclusion: The use of more robust methodology with well-defined control groups, as well as randomization of clinical trials in future studies would increase the quality of evidence in the study of tinnitus management. Clinical recommendation: Combined therapies (masking + counselling + attention diversion) appear more appropriate in the treatment of tinnitus as the evidence is not sufficient to support a specific treatment method. Background: In Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT) sound stimulation is conventionally performed with low-level broadband sound generators; since the patient has to receive it for many hours in a day, it is important that the sound is tolerable and agreeable to the patient. A clinical trial was undertaken to evaluate the effect of different colour sound generators on tinnitus. The colour of a sound refers to the power spectrum of the signal. The sound generators used in this study provide the option to choose the preferred or most acceptable sound among white, red and pink noise. Methods and Findings: Changes in Tinnitus Handicap Inventory and Numeric Rating Scales were measured in 20 patients after 3 and 6 months following the fitting of ear-level multi-colour sound generators. The outcomes were compared to a similar group of 20 participants receiving the same management except through conventional white noise sound generators. Significant improvements were obtained in both groups following 3 and 6 months after fitting. No significant difference was found between the two groups using one or the other type of sound. Two thirds of the patient preferred white noise, making it the most appealing amongst the options. The rest of the patients indicated red noise as the preferred sound given that it reminded them of soothing noises like shower or rainfall. No one chose pink noise. Conclusions: TRT with different colour sound generators is effective in reducing the discomfort caused by tinnitus in normal hearing patients. Enabling the patients to choose their preferred sound after short trial periods achieved higher patient satisfaction. This practice could help tailor individualized treatment for each patient. The purpose of tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT) is to induce habituation, first of the reaction to the tinnitus signal, and subsequently to habituate the perception of tinnitus itself. Habituation of sound is achieved through sound treatment which involves the use of low-level broadband noise mainly through noise maskers. Noise maskers are costly hence there is a need to find an alternate source of noise like MP3 and mobile phones. The goal of present study was to find out whether persons with tinnitus may be successfully treated with TRT using sound treatment from the noise presented through mobile phones. Total 30 male adult patients with tinnitus were enrolled for TRT. TRT comprised of two activities i.e. directive counseling and sound treatment. The most efficient noise stimulus was tape recorded by presenting the noise in the sound field using speakers and was recorded using a digital tape recorder. The recorded noise was saved to the mobile phone of the person with tinnitus and was asked to play it using hands-free at the level which was just audible for the duration of 3-4 hours per day. The Tinnitus interview forms were used to measure: (1) Percentage awareness of tinnitus, (2) Percentage of the time it caused distress and (3) Number of life factors affected. After 6 months these measurements were repeated and an improvement score of 40% was taken as criteria for the significant success of TRT. Out of 30 patients, 25 could continue coming for follow up sessions. Out of these 25 patients, 17 patients (68%) showed significant improvement. ObjectivesThe authors have treated chronic tinnitus patients using a combination of a simplified tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT) and medications, which we called modified TRT. In this clinical setting, we have attempted small-group counseling to find a time-effective equivalent of individual counseling. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of small-group counseling by comparing the treatment outcomes between individual and small-group counseling.MethodsThe patients who had distressing chronic tinnitus with normal hearing or mild hearing loss were included. The subjects were placed into the small-group (group 1:4) or the individual (group 1:1) counseling group, and underwent a modified TRT composed of a single session of directive counseling and ambient sound stimulation. In addition, alprazolam (0.25 mg) and ginkgo biloba extract (80 mg) were administered orally to the subjects for 3 months. The 3- and 6- month outcomes were assessed using the follow-up rates and tinnitus severity scores: awareness, tinnitus handicap inventory (THI), loudness, annoyance, and effect on life. The treatment responses were classified as improvement, no changes, and worsening.Results Of the total 149 patients (77 in group 1:1; 72 in group 1:4), 104 patients completed the protocol at 3 months, and 55 patients at 6 months. The follow-up rates were similar in both groups. Over the period of 6 months, all scores declined significantly except the loudness score at 3 months in both groups. Treatment responses showed no between-group differences. The success rate based on THI was 70% in group 1:1, and 64% in group 1:4 at 6 months.ConclusionThe small-group counseling of our modified TRT was comparable to the individual counseling for tinnitus relief. We suggest that this protocol can be implemented effectively in any crowded otolaryngology clinics.

Background: Tinnitus is one of the otologic symptoms commonly reported to be associated with temporomandibular disorder (TMD), and questions regarding its nature and cause continue to plague the clinical and research community. Objectives: The current pilot study aimed to investigate the clinical signs and symptoms of presenting tinnitus in a group of individuals with TMD (group A), and compare them with a group with tinnitus but without TMD (group B). Twenty participants were included in the study, 10 from each group. Methods: All participants underwent basic audiological as well as ear, nose and throat (ENT) evaluations to establish group A and group B. For tinnitus assessment, all participants completed a tinnitus survey questionnaire, and their tinnitus was evaluated using tinnitus matching procedures. Results: Findings revealed clinically relevant differences in attributes of tinnitus in patients with and without TMD. Most of the participants in group A matched their tinnitus to a 6 000 Hz tone or noise, at lower intensity levels than participants in group B, although these results were not statistically significant. Participants in group A associated their tinnitus with a single sound whereas some participants in group B associated it with more than one sound. More participants in group B reported the duration of their tinnitus as constant. Conclusions: Tinnitus may occur in patients with TMD, and be of high frequency. This highlights the importance of thorough assessment for patients with tinnitus as this might have implications for diagnosis and management.

The Tinnitus Retraining Therapy Trial (TRTT) is a National Institutes of Health-sponsored, multi-centered, placebo-controlled, randomized trial evaluating the efficacy of tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT) and its component parts, directive counseling and sound therapy, as treatments for subjective debilitating tinnitus in the military. The TRTT will enroll 228 individuals at an allocation ratio of 1:1:1 to: (1) directive counseling and sound therapy using conventional sound generators; (2) directive counseling and placebo sound generators; or (3) standard of care as administered in the military. Study centers include a Study Chair′s Office, a Data Coordinating Center, and six Military Clinical Centers with treatment and data collection standardized across all clinics. The primary outcome is change in Tinnitus Questionnaire (TQ) score assessed longitudinally at 3, 6, 12, and 18-month follow-up visits. Secondary outcomes include: Change in TQ sub-scales, Tinnitus Handicap Inventory, Tinnitus Functional Index, and TRT interview visual analog scale; audiometric and psychoacoustic measures; and change in quality of life. The TRTT will evaluate TRT efficacy by comparing TRT (directive counseling and conventional sound generators) with standard of care; directive counseling by comparing directive counseling plus placebo sound generators versus standard of care; and sound therapy by comparing conventional versus placebo sound generators. We hypothesize that full TRT will be more efficacious than standard of care, directive counseling and placebo sound generators more efficacious than standard of care, and conventional more efficacious than placebo sound generators in habituating the tinnitus awareness, annoyance, and impact on the study participant′s life.

Tinnitus is the perception of sound without an external source and is known to be associated with altered neuronal excitability in the auditory system. Tinnitus severity can be assessed by various psychometric instruments and there is no objective measures developed to evaluate tinnitus severity and therapeutic effects so far. Brain-derived nerve growth factor (BDNF) is believed in playing a key role in regulating neuronal excitability in the brain. To determine whether BDNF correlates with tinnitus induction and severity, we described plasma BDNF levels in patients with tinnitus and healthy controls and evaluated the correlation between plasma BDNF levels and tinnitus severity measured by Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) and Visual Analog Scale (VAS). Moreover, alteration of plasma BDNF levels before and after tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT) in patients with severe tinnitus was also analyzed. We found plasma BDNF levels were elevated in patients with tinnitus compared with healthy controls. In addition, plasma BDNF levels in patients with severe tinnitus were decreased significantly after effective TRT. However, plasma BDNF levels were not correlated with tinnitus loudness and tinnitus severity measured by THI and VAS. These findings support plasma BDNF as a marker for activity changes in the auditory system and could possibly evaluate therapeutic effects in patients with tinnitus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the audiologic and clinical characteristics of the tinnitus in single-sided deafness (SSD) patients and to determine whether tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT) is beneficial to those patients who suffer from tinnitus with SSD. MATERIALS and METHODS: Thirty-six tinnitus patients with unilateral sensorineural profound hearing loss were included in the SSD group, and 46 tinnitus patients with normal hearing were included in the normal hearing group (NH group). Tinnitus evaluation consisted of the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI), and visual analog scales (VAS) were obtained at the initial interview and 6 months after TRT. The therapeutic response was analyzed and compared between the two groups. RESULTS: The subjective intensity of tinnitus and objective loudness were greater in the SSD group. According to the THI scores prior to TRT, the SSD group showed significantly higher values, except in the emotional subscale. The THI score was significantly improved after TRT in both groups. The total THI score and all the subscale scores were significantly reduced. The VAS average scores were reduced from 6.5 to 5.1 in the SSD group, without statistical significance, whereas in the NH group, the VAS average scores significantly decreased from 5.8 to 4.5 after TRT.
