Abstract

Controlling magnetic anisotropy is a key requirement for the fundamental understanding of molecular magnetism and is a prerequisite for numerous applications in magnetic storage, spintronics, and all-spin logic devices. In order to address the question of molecular magnetic anisotropy experimentally, we have synthesized single-crystals of a molecular spin system containing four antiferromagnetically coupled s = 5/2 manganese(II) ions. Using low-temperature cantilever magnetometry, we demonstrate the selective population of the S = 0, 1, . . . , 10 spin states upon application of magnetic fields up to 33 T and map the magnetic anisotropy of each of these states. We observe a strong dependence of the shape and size of the magnetic anisotropy on the populated spin states, and, in particular, reveal an anisotropy reversal upon going from the lowest to the highest spin-state., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

2. Evidence for strong electron correlations in a non-symmorphic Dirac semimetal

Abstract

Metallic iridium oxides (iridates) provide a fertile playground to explore new phenomena resulting from the interplay between topological protection, spin-orbit and electron-electron interactions. To date, however, few studies of the low energy electronic excitations exist due to the difficulty in synthesising crystals with sufficiently large carrier mean-free-paths. Here, we report the observation of Shubnikov-de Haas quantum oscillations in high-quality single crystals of monoclinic SrIrO$_3$ in magnetic fields up to 35~T. Analysis of the oscillations reveals a Fermi surface comprising multiple small pockets with effective masses up to 4.5 times larger than the calculated band mass. \textit{Ab-initio} calculations reveal robust linear band-crossings at the Brillouin zone boundary, due to its non-symmorphic symmetry, and overall we find good agreement between the angular dependence of the oscillations and the theoretical expectations. Further evidence of strong electron correlations is realized through the observation of signatures of non-Fermi liquid transport as well as a large Kadowaki-Woods ratio. These collective findings, coupled with knowledge of the evolution of the electronic state across the Ruddlesden-Popper iridate series, establishes monoclinic SrIrO$_3$ as a topological semimetal on the boundary of the Mott metal-insulator transition.

Abstract

The motivation to search for signatures of superconductivity in Weyl semi-metals and other topological phases lies in their potential for hosting exotic phenomena such as nonzero-momentum pairing or the Majorana fermion, a viable candidate for the ultimate realization of a scalable quantum computer. Until now, however, all known reports of superconductivity in Weyl semimetals have arisen through surface contact with a sharp tip, focused ion-beam surface treatment or the application of high pressures. Here, we demonstrate the observation of superconductivity in single crystals, even an as-grown crystal, of the Weyl semi-metal tantalum phosphide (TaP), at ambient pressure. A superconducting transition temperature, $Tc$, varying between 1.7 and 5.3 K, is observed in different samples, both as-grown and microscopic samples processed with focused ion beam (FIB) etching. Our data show that the superconductivity present in the as-grown crystal is inhomogeneous yet exists in the bulk. For samples fabricated with FIB, we observe, in addition to the bulk superconductivity, a second superconducting state that resides on the sample surface. Through measurements of the characteristic fields as a function of temperature and angle, we are able to confirm the dimensionality of the two distinct superconducting phases., Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures

10. Exporting a Student-Centered Curriculum: A Home Institution's Perspective

Abstract

Numerous, mainly Anglo-Saxon, higher education institutions have agreements with foreign providers to deliver their curricula abroad. This trend is gradually making inroads into the medical domain, where foreign institutions undertake to offer their students learning experiences similar to those of the home institution. Not an easy feat, as the national health care contexts differ greatly between institutions. In a bid to export the curriculum, institutions risk compromising their financial resilience and reputation. This article presents an instrumental case study of a home institution's perspective on the establishment of a cross-border student-centered curriculum partnership. It provides the reader with a practical discourse on dimensions that need to be bridged between home and host contexts, and on new working processes that need to be integrated within the home institution's existing organizational structure. We describe the advantages and disadvantages based on our experiences with a centralized organizational approach, and advocate for a gradual move toward decentral interfaculty communities of practice.

13. Optimizing Link Prediction for the CSD Cocrystal Network: A Demonstration Using Praziquantel

Abstract

The physicochemical properties of chemical compounds can be altered and optimized by cocrystallization with a suitable coformer. However, discovering suitable coformers is a difficult and expensive process. Link prediction is one of the several techniques developed to predict suitable new coformers computationally. Link prediction uses a network of known coformers extracted from, e.g., the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) to predict new cocrystals. We have investigated link prediction methods and were able to improve the performance of these methods using a scoring function called “multi-steps resource allocation”. Further improvements were obtained by examining the local structure of the network to remove imperfections and by using an algorithm previously designed by us to bipartise the network, thus removing imperfections on a global scale. By repeatedly predicting and synthesizing new cocrystals and adding them to the network to predict more new cocrystals, we obtain more and better predictions, but saturation of the local network eventually leads to diminishing returns. We demonstrate this for praziquantel (PZQ), a drug used to treat schistosomiasis. We discovered 11 new cocrystals for this compound, one of which is a racemic conglomerate that could be used to improve the medical efficacy of PZQ, and present 6 new cocrystal structures.
