Bandwidth and noise are fundamental considerations in all communication and signal processing systems. The group-velocity dispersion of optical fibers creates nulls in their frequency response, limiting the bandwidth and hence the temporal response of communication and signal processing systems. Intensity noise is often the dominant optical noise source for semiconductor lasers in data communication. In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a new class of electrooptic modulators that is capable of mitigating both of these problems. Fabricated in thin-film lithium niobate, the modulator simultaneously achieves phase diversity and differential operations. The former compensates for the dispersion penalty of the fiber, and the latter overcomes the intensity noise and other common mode fluctuations. Applications of the so-called four-phase electrooptic modulator in time-stretch data acquisition and in optical communication are demonstrated.

Umami peptides can help reduce the salt content in foods while still maintaining a savory taste. Few studies have reported the bioactivity of umami peptides after consumption. We studied the bioactivities of 12 umami peptides after gastrointestinal digestion. Three umami peptides exhibited angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory and antioxidant activity after digestion. Six novel peptides were identified from digestion solutions of the peptides by HPLC-MS/MS. Among them, CC, CCNK, and HCHT had both ACE inhibitory activity (IC50 values were 9.81, 9.00, and 114.99 μM, respectively) and antioxidant activity (strong 1,1-Diphenyl-2-pycryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS) free radical scavenging activities). AHSVRF had strong ACE inhibitory activity. These peptides increased the nitric oxide concentration and decreased the content of endothelin-1 in a medium of human umbilical vein endothelial cells in a dose-dependent manner. Experiments with damaged HepG2 cells showed that peptides CC, CCNK, and HCHT had antioxidant activity through their cytoprotective effects and by reducing the reactive oxygen species content. The results indicated that umami peptides may provide many health benefits after consumption.

The performance of traditional photonic time-stretch systems is limited in terms of bandwidth and dynamic range. A differential and phase-diverse electrooptic modulator circuit is demonstrated in the thin-film lithium niobate platform to overcome these limitations.

Broccoli-derived peptides show beneficial metabolic effects, and it is necessary to examine their exact functional sequences. First, peptides from the trypsin hydrolysate of broccoli proteins were isolated and identified using column chromatography and quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry. After that, their functions were verified by oral administration. The results identified two novel peptides as Leu-Pro-Gly-Val-Leu-Pro-Val-Ala (LPGVLPVA) and Tyr-Leu-Tyr-Ser-Pro-Ala-Tyr (YLYSPAY). LPGVLPVA exhibited an ACE IC50 value of 0.776 ± 0.03 μM and a DPP-IV IC50 value of 392 ± 24 μM; YLYSPAY showed an ACE IC50 value of 8.52 ± 0.63 μM and a DPP-IV IC50 value of 181 ± 4 μM. Administration of the peptides reduced the blood pressure of spontaneously hypertensive rats and reduced blood glucose levels in the oral glucose tolerance test in mice. The results indicated that LPGVLPVA and YLYSPAY could be potential nutritional candidates for hypertensive and diabetic people, especially for those with diabetes associated with hypertension.

Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) is the key technology in ultra-high capacity links that form the backbone of the internet. Hundreds or more data channels each at a different wavelength travel through a single fiber resulting in aggregate data rates exceeding many Terabits per second. The fundamental limit to the data transmission rate is the optical crosstalk between channels induced by the inevitable nonlinearity of the fiber. Traditional methods for compensating for the reduction in the bit error rate caused by the crosstalk include numerical backpropagation as well as nonlinear Volterra filter, both implemented in the digital domain at the receiver. Backpropagation through the canonical nonlinear Schrodinger equation is computationally expensive and beyond the capability of today’s DSP at the data rates that optical networks operate. Volterra filters scale superlinearly with an increasing number of taps and which in turn scale with the amount dispersion in the fiber. Therefore, they are not the ideal solution for high data rates. In this talk, we report on the application of machine learning, and neural networks in particular, on the compensation of optical crosstalk in WDM communication. We compare the performance of different machine learning models such as support vector machine (SVM), decision tree, convolutional neural network (CNN) in terms of the achievable bit error rate on both binary and multilevel modulated data. We further evaluate the sensitivity of the error rate to the resolution of the analog to digital converter (ADC) and to the signal to noise ratio as well as the latency of our algorithms

The angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory peptide LVLPGE provides outstanding antihypertensive effects in vivo, with a maximum systolic blood pressure (SBP) drop of 39 mmHg at a dose of 10 mg/kg. We evaluated the gastrointestinal digestion, transport, and in vivo antihypertensive effects of LVLPGE at different doses. LVLPGE was resistant to gastrointestinal enzymes with a stability of 97.8% and a permeability Papp of (5.09 ± 0.94) × 10-7 cm/s. LVLPGE was mainly transported through the Caco-2 cell monolayer by the peptide transporter PepT 1 and passive-mediated transport. LVLPGE at doses of 30 and 50 mg/kg had a positive antihypertensive effect in vivo; 30 mg/kg had a more significant effect than 50 mg/kg. After oral administration, the pharmacokinetics of LVLPGE showed that the Cmax was 4.65 ng/mL at 2 min. The blood pressure-lowering effect increased as the concentration of LVLPGE increased in the plasma of spontaneous hypertensive rats (SHRs).

With the advent of the 5G wireless networks, achieving tens of gigabits per second throughputs and low, milliseconds, latency has become a reality. This level of performance will fuel numerous real-time applications, such as autonomy and augmented reality, where the computationally heavy tasks can be performed in the cloud. The increase in the bandwidth along with the use of dense constellations places a significant burden on the speed and accuracy of analog-to-digital converters (ADC). A popular approach to create wideband ADCs is utilizing multiple channels each operating at a lower speed in the time-interleaved fashion. However, an interleaved ADC comes with its own set of challenges. The parallel architecture is very sensitive to the inter-channel mismatch, timing jitter, clock skew between different ADC channels as well as the nonlinearity within individual channels. Consequently, complex post-calibration is required using digital signal processing (DSP) after the ADC. The traditional DSP calibration consumes a significant amount of power and its design requires knowledge of the source and type of errors which are becoming increasingly difficult to predict in nanometer CMOS processes. In this paper, instead of individually targeting each source of error, we utilize a deep learning algorithm to learn the complete and complex ADC behavior and to compensate for it in realtime. We demonstrate this "Deep ADC" technique on an 8G Sample/s 8-channel time-interleaved ADC with the QAM-OFDM modulated data. Simulation results for different QAM symbol constellations and OFDM subcarriers show dramatic improvements of approximately 5 bits in the dynamic range with a concomitant drastic reduction in symbol error rate. We further discuss the hardware implementation including latency, power consumption, memory requirements, and chip area.

In the present study we purified and identified peptides from broccoli protein hydrolysates and evaluated their angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activity in vitro and hypotensive effect in vivo. Three ACE inhibitory peptides were isolated and identified as IPPAYTK, LVLPGELAK, and TFQGPPHGIQVER, and their inhibitory IC50 values were 23.5, 184.0, and 3.4 μM, respectively. We then investigated the effect of gastrointestinal digestion on ACE inhibitory activity. We detected almost two times the ACE inhibitory activity of the peptide LVLPGELAK following simulated digestion than prior to digestion. LVLPGE and LAK, two novel peptides exhibiting high ACE inhibitory activity, were discovered following digestion and possessed IC50 values of 13.5 and 48.0 μM, respectively. The hypotensive effect of the peptides was assessed after oral administration to spontaneous hypertensive rats (SHRs). We found that LVLPGE and LAK demonstrated a significant hypotensive effect in vivo. Protein from broccoli may thus constitute a potential antihypertensive peptide source.

Heterogeneous equipment using in range test bring the problem of information management and equipment long-distance control in real time. To solve this problem, an equipment information management system based on Web services is designed that has features of equipment synthesis information management and equipment long-distance control in real time. Experimental results show that the system has a quick browser response speed and short information transmission delay.

Background: Asthma is a complex heritable inflammatory disorder of the airways associated with clinical signs of allergic inflammation and bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR). The incidence of asthma continues to rise in industrialized countries despite advances in the identification of cellular and molecular mediators that are associated with the disease. Because of its importance in human health, additional research and alternative therapeutic strategies are justified to create more effective treatments for this debilitating disease. Objective: Studies use recombinant inbred mice to demonstrate that BHR in mouse models of asthma is associated with a genetic alteration at the IL-9 locus, where IL-9 expression in lung is strongly associated with bronchial responsiveness. We have investigated the ability of intratracheal instilled IL-9 to induce asthmatic-like responses in naive C57BL/6 (B6) mice, which express very low levels of IL-9. Methods: IL-9 or vehicle was intratracheal instilled in naive B6 mice for 10 days. Mice were analyzed for effects on BHR, lung eosinophilia, and serum total IgE levels. Results: Phenotypic effects of B6 mice instilled with IL-9 were increased eosinophils in the bronchoalveolar lavage and significantly elevated serum total IgE. Moreover, IL-9 was found to induce IL-5Rα in vivo and in vitro, suggesting a potential mechanism for the novel actions described for IL-9 on eosinophils. Conclusion: Increased levels of IL-9 in the airway of naive B6 mice induced lung eosinophilia and serum total IgE levels, which are 2 clinical features of asthma. These data support a central role for the IL-9 pathway in the complex pathogenesis of allergic inflammation. (J Allergy Clin Immunol 1999;103:485-91.)

Cystatins are protein inhibitors of papain and related cysteine proteinases. A series of continuous synthetic peptides corresponding to the entire sequence of rat salivary cystatin was used to localize the binding domains of the cystatin to papain. Several synthetic peptides, one from the aminoterminal sequence (peptide 1-24) and others from the carboxylterminal (peptides 66-79, 66-90, 79-90, 79-114), showed binding to papain, but none of the peptides showed inhibition of papain activity. Three recombinant rat salivary cystatin variants (N-terminal truncated protein lacking amino acid residues 1-9; variant 49-53, in which amino acid residues QVVAG of rat salivary cystatin had been replaced with amino acid residues LVL in mutant protein; and variant 65-78, in which amino acid residues 65-78 had been replaced with amino acids PG in mutant protein) were produced using the Escherichia coli expression system pGex-4T. To generate N-terminal truncated protein the desired coding region of the cystatin gene was amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). To produce the variants 49-53 and 65-78, a PCR-based approach of gene splicing by overlap extension was used. Recombinant cystatin proteins were produced as insoluble inclusion bodies as fusion proteins with a glutathione S-transferase (GST) carrier. After solubilization with urea the GST carrier was cleaved from the fusion protein with thrombin and cystatin variants purified by fast liquid chromatography on a MonoQ column. The purified proteins reacted with antibodies to rat salivary cystatin. The N-terminal truncated and variant 49-53 exhibited very little inhibitory activity towards papain, whereas variant 65-78 exhibited papain-inhibitory activity similar to the full-length recombinant cystatin.
