The advent of single cell transposase-accessible chromatin sequencing (scATAC-seq) technology enables us to explore the genomic characteristics and chromatin accessibility of blood cells at the single-cell level. To fully make sense of the roles and regulatory complexities of blood cells, it is critical to collect and analyze these rapidly accumulating scATAC-seq datasets at a system level. Here, we present scBlood (https://bio.liclab.net/scBlood/), a comprehensive single-cell accessible chromatin database of blood cells. The current version of scBlood catalogs 770,907 blood cells and 452,247 non-blood cells from ∼400 high-quality scATAC-seq samples covering 30 tissues and 21 disease types. All data hosted on scBlood have undergone preprocessing from raw fastq files and multiple standards of quality control. Furthermore, we conducted comprehensive downstream analyses, including multi-sample integration analysis, cell clustering and annotation, differential chromatin accessibility analysis, functional enrichment analysis, co-accessibility analysis, gene activity score calculation, and transcription factor (TF) enrichment analysis. In summary, scBlood provides a user-friendly interface for searching, browsing, analyzing, visualizing, and downloading scATAC-seq data of interest. This platform facilitates insights into the functions and regulatory mechanisms of blood cells, as well as their involvement in blood-related diseases.

The application of 2,4-epibrassinolide (EBR) is considered an effective and environment friendly method to improve plant growth under heavy metal (HM) stress, which is crucial for crop productivity and environmental phytoremediation. This meta-analysis evaluated plant responses to exogenous EBR under HM stress by compiling data from 73 studies, including 2480 observations. Results showed that the most significant effects of exogenous EBR on plant growth and HM uptake parameters were observed on shoot/root length (47.9 %) and HM concentration in plant tissues (-32.9 %). EBR application enhanced photosynthesis and the mitigation of oxidative damage by significantly boosting antioxidant enzyme activity, non-enzymatic antioxidants, and metabolites. Exogenous EBR induced the largest percentage changes in plant growth and HM uptake under nickel stress, with an average increase of 57.5 % and a decline of 38.5 %, respectively. The greatest effects of exogenous EBR on plant growth and HM uptake parameters were observed in plants of the Cruciferae family, while the lowest effects were in the Gramineae family. In terms of EBR application characteristics, seed soaking with lower EBR concentrations (≤ 1 nM) is recommended for crop production in HM-contaminated soils. These findings underscore the potential of exogenous EBR in achieving sustainable agriculture and environmental phytoremediation in HM-contaminated soils.

Abstract Aims Surveys and research on the applications of the hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG) are important for understanding the current status and future development of this technology in China. This article aimed to investigate the status of hepatic venous pressure gradient measurement in China in 2022. Methods We investigated the overall status of HVPG technology in China—including hospital distribution, hospital level, annual number of cases, catheters used, average cost, indications, and current challenges by using online questionnaire. By counting the number and percentages of cases of these results, we hope to clarify the current status of HVPG measurements in China. Results According to the survey, 85 hospitals in China used HVPG technology in 2022 distributed across 29 provinces. A total of 4989 HVPG measurements were performed in all of the surveyed hospitals in 2022, of which 2813 cases (56.4%) were measured alone. The average cost of HVPG measurement was 5646.8 ± 2327.9 CNY. Of the clinical teams who performed the measurements (sometimes multiple per hospital), 94.3% (82/87) used the balloon method, and the majority of the teams (72.4%, 63/87) used embolectomy catheters. Conclusions This survey clarified the clinical application status of HVPG in China and confirmed that some medical institutions in China have established a foundation for this technology. It is still necessary to continue promoting and popularizing this technology in the future.

ABSTRACT RNA interference (RNAi) drives powerful antiviral immunity in plants and animals so that many viruses must express viral suppressor of RNAi (VSR) to establish virulent infection. However, little is known about the immune responses conferring resistance against viruses that have evolved the counter-defensive strategy to suppress antiviral RNAi. In this study, we discover that Drosophila cells infected with Drosophila C virus (DCV), a natural viral pathogen of Drosophila known to harbor a potent VSR, exhibit heightened expression of circular RNA circZfh1. circZfh1 confers virus resistance in the presence of viral suppression of antiviral RNAi. Furthermore, we validate that circZfh1 encodes a 274-amino acid protein, CRAV, essential for its antiviral activity. Notably, CRAV differs from its parental Zfh1 gene in a different reading frame, with the C-terminal 69 amino acids unique to CRAV. Our analysis also reveals the presence of CRAV in species within the melanogaster subgroup, with the C-terminal unique fragment undergoing accelerated evolution. Expression of CRAV upregulates the expression of the cytokine Upd3, which binds to its receptor, stimulating the JAK-STAT pathway and enhancing the immune response to DCV infection. Notably, CRISPR/Cas9 knockout of circZfh1 significantly enhances DCV replication in vitro and in vivo, with circZfh1-knockout adult flies displaying heightened disease susceptibility to DCV. In summary, our findings unveil a Drosophila protein-coding circular RNA that activates an innate immune signaling pathway crucial for virus resistance following the suppression of antiviral RNAi by viruses, thereby elucidating a novel counter-defensive strategy.IMPORTANCEEukaryotic hosts possess a complex, multilayered immune system that guards against pathogen invasion. In fruit flies, RNA interference (RNAi) drives robust antiviral immunity, prompting many viruses to express viral suppressors of RNAi (VSRs) to establish virulent infections. However, little is known about immune responses that confer resistance against viruses with potent VSRs. In this study, we discovered that Drosophila cells infected with Drosophila C virus (DCV), a natural viral pathogen possessing a potent VSR, upregulated the expression of circular RNA circZfh1. circZfh1 exhibits DCV-specific antiviral activity, encoding a 274-amino acid protein, CRAV, crucial for its antiviral effects. Abstract Oxide semimetals exhibiting both nontrivial topological characteristics stand as exemplary parent compounds and multiple degrees of freedom, offering a promise for the realization of novel electronic states. In this work, we report the structural and transport phase transition in an oxide semimetal, SrNbO3, achieved through effective anion doping. Notably, the resistivity increased by more than three orders of magnitude at room temperature upon nitrogen‐doping. The extent of electronic modulation in SrNbO3 is strongly correlated with misfit strain, underscoring its phase instability to both chemical doping and crystallographic symmetry variations. Using first‐principles calculations, we discern that elevating the level of nitrogen doping induces an upward shift in the conductive bands of SrNbO3−δNδ. Consequently, a transition from a metallic state to an insulating state becomes apparent as the nitrogen concentration reaches a threshold of 1/3. This investigation shows effective anion engineering in oxide semimetals, offering pathways for manipulating their physical properties.

Abstract Recent progress on the signatures of pressure-induced high-temperature superconductivity in Ruddlesden–Popper (RP) nickelates (La n+1Ni n O3n+1) has attracted growing interest in both theoretical calculations and experimental efforts. The fabrication of high-quality single-crystalline RP nickelate thin films is critical for possible reducing the superconducting transition pressure and advancing applications in microelectronics in the future. In this study, we report the observations of an active phase transition in RP nickelate films induced by misfit strain. We found that RP nickelate films favor the perovskite structure (n = ∞) under tensile strains, while compressive strains stabilize the La3Ni2O7 (n = 2) phase. The selection of distinct phases is governed by the strain dependent formation energy and electronic configuration. In compressively strained La3Ni2O7, we experimentally determined the e g splitting energy is ~0.2 eV and electrons prefer to occupy in-plane orbitals. First-principles calculations unveil a robust coupling between strain effects and the valence state of Ni ions in RP nickelates, suggesting a dual driving force for the inevitable phase co-existence transition in RP nickelates. Our work underscores the sensitivity of RP nickelate formation to epitaxial strain, presenting a significant challenge in fabricating pure-phase RP nickelate films. Therefore, special attention to stacking defects and grain boundaries between different RP phases is essential when discussing the pressure-induced superconductivity in RP nickelates.

Soil Cd pollution is a significant environmental issue faced by contemporary society. Kentucky bluegrass is considered a potential phytoremediation species, as some varieties have excellent cadmium (Cd) tolerance. However, the mechanisms of Cd accumulation and transportation in Kentucky bluegrass are still not fully understood. The Cd-tolerant Kentucky bluegrass cultivar ‘Midnight’ (M) exhibits lower Cd translocation efficiency and a higher leaf Cd concentration compared to the Cd-sensitive cultivar ‘Rugby II’ (R). We hypothesized that Cd translocation from roots to shoots in cultivar M is hindered by the endodermal barriers and cell wall polysaccharides; hence, we conducted Cd distribution, cytological observation, cell wall component, and transcriptomic analyses under Cd stress conditions using the M and R cultivars. Cd stress resulted in the thickening of the endodermis and increased synthesis of cell wall polysaccharides in both the M and R cultivars. Endodermis development restricted the radical transport of Cd from the root cortex to the stele, while the accumulation of cell wall polysaccharides promoted the binding of Cd to the cell wall. These changes further inhibited the long-distance translocation of Cd from the roots to the aerial parts. Furthermore, the M cultivar exhibited limited long-distance Cd translocation efficiency compared to the R cultivar, which was attributed to the enhanced development of endodermal barriers and increased Cd binding by cell wall polysaccharides. This study provides valuable insights for screening high Cd transport efficiency in Kentucky bluegrass based on anatomical structure and genetic modification.

Abstract Background Metastasis is the primary cause of recurrence and death in patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). LncRNA ACTA2-AS1, a long non-coding RNA, acts as a tumor suppressor in multiple types of human malignancies, while the role of ACTA2-AS1 in PTC metastasis remains unclear. Methods The ACTA2-AS1 expression in PTC tissues was analyzed. The sponged roles of ACTA2-AS1 via miR-4428/KLF9 axis were identified using starBase tool. The function of ACTA2-AS1 in PTC was performed with in vitro and in vivo experiments. The correlation between DNA methylation and mRNA expressions of these gene in the TCGA dataset was explored. Results ACTA2-AS1 expression was downregulated in PTC tissues without metastasis and further decreased in PTC tissues with lymph node metastasis compared with that in normal tissues. Functionally, the overexpression of ACTA2-AS1 inhibited the growth, proliferation, and invasion of PTC cells, whereas its depletion exerted opposite effect. In vivo, ACTA2-AS1 expression inhibited PTC metastasis. Furthermore, ACTA2-AS1 acted as a competing endogenous RNA for miR-4428, thereby positively regulating the expression of miR-4428 target gene, KLF9. Finally, miR-4428 overexpression enhanced invasive potential of PTC cells and significantly weakened the effects of ACTA2-AS1 on promotion and inhibition of KLF9 expression as well as invasive ability of PTC cells, respectively. In the TCGA dataset, the methylation level of ACTA2-AS1 was significantly correlated with its mRNA expression (r = 0.21, p = 2.1 × e−6). Conclusions Our findings demonstrate that ACTA2-AS1 functions as a tumor suppressor in PTC progression at least partly by regulating the miR-4428-dependent expression of KLF9. Graphical abstract

Abstract We aim to develop a nomogram to predict overt hepatic encephalopathy (OHE) after transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) in patients with portal hypertension, according to demographic/clinical indicators such as age, creatinine, blood ammonia, indocyanine green retention rate at 15 min (ICG-R15) and percentage of Portal pressure gradient (PPG) decline. In this retrospective study, 296 patients with portal hypertension who received elective TIPS in Beijing Shijitan Hospital from June 2018 to June 2020 were included. These patients were randomly divided into a training cohort (n = 207) and a validation cohort (n = 89). According to the occurrence of OHE, patients were assigned to OHE group and non-OHE group. Both univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to determine independent variables for predicting OHE after TIPS. Accordingly, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, calibration curve, and decision curve analysis (DCA) were used to compare the accuracy and superiority of a novel model with conventional Child–Pugh and MELD scoring model. Age (OR 1.036, 95% CI 1.002–1.070, p = 0.037), Creatinine (OR 1.011, 95% CI 1.003–1.019, p = 0.009), Blood ammonia (OR 1.025, 95% CI 1.006–1.044, p = 0.011), ICG-R15 (OR 1.030, 95% CI 1.009–1.052, p = 0.004) and Percentage decline in PPG (OR 1.068, 95% CI 1.029–1.109, p = 0.001) were independent risk factors for OHE after TIPS using multifactorial analysis. A nomogram was constructed using a well-fit calibration curve for each of these five covariates. When compared to Child–Pugh and MELD score, this new nomogram has a better predictive value (C-index = 0.828, 95% CI 0.761–0.896). Consistently, this finding was reproduceable in validation cohort and confirmed with DCA. A unique nomogram was developed to predict OHE after TIPS in patients with PHT, with a high prediction sensitivity and specificity performance than commonly applied scoring systems.

ABSTRACT: Cadmium (Cd) and high molybdenum (Mo) are injurious to the body. Previous research has substantiated that Cd and Mo exposure caused testicular injury of ducks, but concrete mechanism is not fully clarified. To further survey the toxicity of co-exposure to Cd and Mo in testis, 40 healthy 8-day-old Shaoxing ducks (Anas platyrhyncha) were stochasticly distributed to 4 groups and raised with basic diet embracing Cd (4 mg/kg Cd) or Mo (100 mg/kg Mo) or both. At the 16th wk, testis tissues were gathered. The characteristic ultrastructural changes related to apoptosis and ferroptosis were observed in Mo or Cd or both groups. Besides, Mo or Cd or both repressed nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) pathway via decreasing Nrf2, Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), NAD(P)H quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1), Glutamate-cysteine ligase catalytic subunit (GCLC) and Glutamate-cysteine ligase modifier subunit (GCLM) mRNA expression of and Nrf2 protein expression, then stimulated apoptosis by elevating Bcl-2 antagonist/killer-1 (Bak-1), Bcl-2-associated X-protein (Bax), Cytochrome complex (Cyt-C), caspase-3 mRNA expression, cleaved-caspase-3 protein expression and apoptosis rate, as well as reducing B-cell lymphoma-2 (Bcl-2) mRNA expression and ratio of Bcl-2 to Bax, and triggered ferroptosis by upregulating Acyl-CoA Synthetase Long Chain Family Member 4 (ACSL4), transferrin receptor (TFR1) and Prostaglandin-Endoperoxide Synthase 2 (PTGS2) expression levels, and downregulating ferritin heavy chain 1 (FTH1), ferritin light chain 1 (FTL1), ferroportin 1 (FPN1), solute carrier family 7 member 11 (SCL7A11) and glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) expression levels. The most obvious changes of these indexes were observed in co-treated group. Altogether, the results announced that Mo or Cd or both evoked apoptosis and ferroptosis by inhibiting Nrf2 pathway in the testis of ducks, and co-exposure to Mo and Cd exacerbated these variations.

The recycling of industrial solid by-products such as red mud (RM) has become an urgent priority, due to their large quantities and lack of reutilization methods can lead to resource wastage. In this work, RM was employed to fabricate green hydrochar (HC) to prepare zero-valent iron (ZVI) modified carbonous materials, and conventional iron salts (IS, FeCl3) was applied as comparison, fabricated HC labeled as RM/HC and IS/HC, respectively. The physicochemical properties of these HC were comprehensively characterized. Further, hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) removal performance was assessed (375.66 and 337.19 mg/g for RM/HC and IS/HC, respectively). The influence of dosage and initial pH were evaluated, while isotherms, kinetics, and thermodynamics analysis were also conducted, to mimic the surface interactions. The stability and recyclability of adsorbents also verified, while the practical feasibility was assessed by bok choy-planting experiment. This work revealed that RM can be used as a high value and green fabricant for HC the effective removal of chromium contaminants from the wastewater.

Abstract Two extreme cases of static stability are voltage stability and power angle stability. The general stability analysis only focuses on one of the voltage stability or power angle stability. The stability limit and state change are studied for a certain kind of stability characteristics. In this paper, the stability limits of static voltage and power angle are derived, respectively. Therefore, different stability characteristics and their interrelationships can be further studied. The index to judge the dominant stability characteristic is defined. The proposed index only needs the system wide‐area measurement information to quickly and accurately judge the dominant static stability characteristics. The dominant instability (DI) characteristic index proposed in this paper is equal to 1 or −1, which can help to quickly identify whether the power angle stability or voltage stability is dominant. The effectiveness of the method is proved by a simple system.

Sail-assisted propulsion is an important energy-saving technology in the shipping industry, and the development of foldable wingsails has recently become a hot topic. This type of sail is usually composed of multiple elements, and its performance at different folding configurations is very sensitive to changes in incoming airflow, which result in practical operational challenges. Therefore, original and optimized three-element wingsails (bare and concave) are modeled and simulated using the unsteady RANS method with the k-ω SST turbulence model. Next, certain key design and structural parameters (such as angle of attack, apparent wind angle, and camber) are employed to characterize the auxiliary propulsion performance, and the differences are explained in combination with the flow field details. The results show that, in the unfolded state, the aerodynamic performance of the concave wingsail is better than that of the bare wingsail, exhibiting higher lift coefficients, lower drag coefficients, and a more stable surface flow. In the fully folded state, wherein both the nose and flap are rotated, the thrust performance of the concave wingsail remains superior. Specifically, at an angle of attack of 8 degrees, the thrust coefficient of the concave wingsail is approximately 23.5% higher than that of the bare wingsail, indicating improved wind energy utilization. The research results are of great significance for engineering applications and subsequent optimization design.

The exclusive-or (XOR) hash combiner is a classical hash function combiner, which is well known as a good PRF and MAC combiner, and is used in practice in TLS versions 1.0 and 1.1. In this work, we analyze the second preimage resistance of the XOR combiner underlying two different narrow-pipe hash functions with weak ideal compression functions. To control simultaneously the behavior of the two different hash functions, we develop a new structure called multicollision-and-double-diamond. Multicollision-and-double-diamond structure is constructed using the idea of meet-in-the-middle technique, combined with Joux’s multicollision and Chen’s inverse-diamond structure. Then based on the multicollision-and-double-diamond structure, we present a second preimage attack on the XOR hash combiner with the time complexity of about O2n+12n/2+n−l2n−l+n−k2n−k+2l+1+2k+1) (n is the size of the XOR hash combiner and l and k are respectively the depths of the two inverse-diamond structures), less than the ideal time complexity O2n, and memory of about O2k+2l.

Given a differential characteristic and an existing plaintext pair that satisfies it (referred to as a right pair), generating additional right pairs at a reduced cost is an appealing prospect. The neutral bit technique, referred to as neutral differences throughout this paper, provides a solution to this challenge. Traditionally, the search for neutral differences has heavily depended on experimental testing, leading to limitations in the search range. In this work, we propose the neutral difference table and establish a link between boomerang cryptanalysis and neutral differences. Furthermore, we propose an automated search for neutral differences to address the problem of a limited search range of neutral differences, as previous approaches relied on experimental testing. This approach provides a basis for the subspace spanned by the neutral differences, and we apply this technique to both SPECK32 and LEA, where the predicted results closely match the experimental ones. Consequently, we present the improved differential-linear distinguishers for SPECK32 and LEA, along with the 18-round attacks on LEA192 and LEA256 with the lowest time complexity up to date.

Abstract Background The hemodynamics of patients with cirrhosis and portal hypertension are complex and variable. We aimed to investigate differences in venous pressures determined by innovative angiography and conventional angiography using balloon occlusion of the hepatic veins in patients with alcoholic cirrhosis and portal hypertension. Methods A total of 134 patients with alcoholic cirrhosis who fulfilled the inclusion criteria from June 2017 to June 2020 were included. During transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt, conventional and innovative angiography were performed, and venous pressures were measured. A paired t-test and Pearson’s correlation coefficient were used for analysis. This paper considers the novel fractional-order operator developed by Atangana-Baleanu for transmission dynamics of the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic. Assuming the importance of the non-local Atangana-Baleanu fractional-order approach, the transmission mechanism of SARS-CoV-2 has been investigated while taking into account different phases of infection and various transmission routes of the disease. To conduct the proposed study, first of all, we shall formulate the model by using the classical operator of ordinary derivatives. We utilize the fractional order derivative and the model will be extended to a model containing fractional order derivatives. The operator being used is the fractional differential operator and has fractional order Φ1. The model is analyzed further and some basic aspects of the model are investigated besides calculating the basic reproduction number and the possible equilibria of the proposed model. The equilibria of the model are examined for stability purposes and necessary conditions for stability are obtained. Stability is also necessary in terms of numerical setup. The theory of non-linear functional analysis is employed and Ulam-Hyers’s stability of the model is presented. The approach of newton’s polynomial is considered and a new numerical scheme is developed which helped in presenting an iterative process for the proposed ABC system. Based on this scheme, sample curves are obtained for various values of Φ1 and a pattern is derived between the dynamics of the infection and the order of the derivative. Further simulations are presented which show the cruciality and importance of various parameters and the impact of such parameters on the dynamics and control of the disease is presented. The findings of this study will also provide strong conceptual insights into the mechanisms of contagious diseases, assisting global professionals in developing control policies.

Curcumae Rhizoma, a traditional Chinese medicine with a wide range of pharmacological activities, is obtained from the dried rhizomes of Curcuma phaeocaulis VaL., Curcuma kwangsiensis S. G. Lee et C. F. Liang, and Curcuma wenyujin Y. H. Chen et C. Ling. Sesquiterpenoids and curcuminoids are found to be the main constituents of Curcumae Rhizoma. Sesquiterpenoids are composed of three isoprene units and are susceptible to complex transformations, such as cyclization, rearrangement, and oxidation. They are the most structurally diverse class of plant-based natural products with a wide range of biological activities and are widely found in nature. In recent years, scholars have conducted abundant studies on the structures and pharmacological properties of components of Curcumae Rhizoma. This article elucidates the chemical structures, medicinal properties, and biological properties of the sesquiterpenoids (a total of 274 compounds) isolated from Curcumae Rhizoma. We summarized extraction and isolation methods for sesquiterpenoids, established a chemical component library of sesquiterpenoids in Curcumae Rhizoma, and analyzed structural variances among sesquiterpenoids sourced from Curcumae Rhizoma of diverse botanical origins. Furthermore, our investigation reveals a diverse array of sesquiterpenoid types, encompassing guaiane-type, germacrane-type, eudesmane-type, elemane-type, cadinane-type, carane-type, bisabolane-type, humulane-type, and other types, emphasizing the relationship between structural diversity and activity. We hope to provide a valuable reference for further research and exploitation and pave the way for the development of new drugs derived from medicinal plants.

PURPOSEWe aimed to establish a liver function evaluation model by combining multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with liver volume (LV) and further verify the effectiveness of the model to evaluate liver function.METHODSThis retrospective study included 101 consecutive cirrhosis patients (69 cases for modeling group and 32 cases for validation group) who underwent gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI. Five signal intensity parameters were obtained by measuring the signal intensities of the liver, spleen, and erector spinae before and 20 minutes after gadoxetic acid disodium enhancement. The diffusion coefficient (D), pseudo-diffusion coefficient (D*), and perfusion fraction (f) were obtained from intravoxel incoherent motion diffusion-weighted imaging. The LV parameters (Vliver, Vspleen, and Vliver/Vspleen) were obtained using 3-dimensional image generation software. The most effective parameter was selected from each of the 3 methods, and a multivariate regression model for liver function evaluation was established and validated.RESULTSIn the modeling group, relative enhancement (RE), D*, and Vliver/Vspleen showed significant differences among the different liver function groups (P < .001). Receiver operating characteristic analysis showed that these parameters had the highest area under the curve (AUC) values for distinguishing Child-Pugh A from Child-Pugh B and C groups (0.917, 0.929, and 0.885, respectively). The following liver function model was obtained by multivariate regression analysis: F(x)=3.96 − 1.243 (RE) − 0.034 (D*) − 0.080 (Vliver/Vspleen) (R2=0.811, P < .001). In the patients with cirrhosis, the F(x) of Child-Pugh A, B, and C were 1.16 ± 0.44, 1.95 ± 0.29, and 2.79 ± 0.38, respectively. In the validation group, the AUC for F(x) to distinguish Child-Pugh A from Child-Pugh B and C was 0.973.CONCLUSIONCombining multiparametric MRI with LV effectively distinguished patients with different ChildPugh grades. This model could hence be useful as a novel radiological marker to estimate the liver function.

Abstract The global consequences of Coronavirus (COVID-19) have been evident by several hundreds of demises of human beings; hence such plagues are significantly imperative to predict. For this purpose, the mathematical formulation has been proved to be one of the best tools for the assessment of present circumstances and future predictions. In this article, we propose a fractional epidemic model of coronavirus (COVID-19) with vaccination effects. An arbitrary order model of COVID-19 is analyzed through three different fractional operators namely, Caputo, Atangana-Baleanu-Caputo (ABC), and Caputo-Fabrizio (CF), respectively. The fractional dynamics are composed of the interaction among the human population and the external environmental factors of infected peoples. It gives an extra description of the situation of the epidemic. Both the classical and modern approaches have been tested for the proposed model. The qualitative analysis has been checked through the Banach fixed point theory in the sense of a fractional operator. The stability concept of Hyers-Ulam idea is derived. The Newton interpolation scheme is applied for numerical solutions and by assigning values to different parameters. The numerical works in this research verified the analytical results. Finally, some important conclusions are drawn that might provide further basis for in-depth studies of such epidemics.

Abstract The widely spread chromium (Cr) contamination is rising environmental concerns, while the reutilization of agro-industrial by-products are also urgently demanded due to their potential risks. In this study, we prepared the integrated micro-electrolysis composites (IMC) through a facile one-pot method with red mud and rice straw. The effects of components relatively mass ratios as well as pyrolysis temperature were analyzed. The XRD, XPS, SEM, FTIR, and various techniques proved the IMC was successfully synthesized, which was also used to analyze the reaction mechanisms. In this study, the dosage of IMC, pH, adsorption time, and temperature of adsorption processes were explored, in the adsorption experiment of Cr(VI), dosage of IMC was 2 g/L (pH 6, 25 °C, and 200 rpm) for isothermal, while the concentration and contact time were also varied. According to the batch experiments, IMC exhibited acceptable removal capacity (190.6 mg/g) on Cr(VI) and the efficiency reached 97.74%. The removal mechanisms of adsorbed Cr(VI) were mainly elaborated as chemical reduction, complexation, co-precipitation, and physical adherence. All these results shed light on the facile preparation and agro-industrial by-products recycled as engineering materials for the heavy metals decontamination in wastewater.

BackgroundLymph node status is an important factor in determining the prognosis of patients with early gastric cancer (EGC) and preoperative diagnosis of lymph node metastasis (LNM) has some limitations. This study explored the risk factors and independent prognostic factors of LNM in EGC patients and constructed a clinical prediction model to predict LNM.MethodsClinicopathological data of EGC patients was collected from the public Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression was used to identify risk factors for LNM in EGC patients. The performance of the LNM model was evaluated by C-index, calibration curve, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, decision curve analysis (DCA) curve, and clinical impact curve (CIC) based on the results of multivariate regression to develop a nomogram. An independent data set was obtained from China for external validation. The Kaplan-Meier method and Cox regression model were used to identify potential prognostic factors for overall survival (OS) in EGC patients.ResultsA total of 3993 EGC patients were randomly allocated to a training cohort (n=2797) and a validation cohort (n=1196). An external cohort of 106 patients from the Second Hospital of Lanzhou University was used for external validation. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression showed that age, tumor size, differentiation, and examined lymph nodes count (ELNC) were independent risk factors for LNM. Nomogram for predicting LNM in EGC patients was developed and validated. The predictive model had a good discriminatory performance with a concordance index (C-index) of 0.702 (95% CI: 0.679-0.725). The calibration plots showed that the predicted LNM probabilities were the same as the actual observations in both the internal validation cohort and external validation cohort. The AUC values for the training cohort, internal validation cohort and external validation cohort were 0.702 (95% CI: 0.679-0.725), 0.709 (95% CI: 0.674-0.744) and 0.750(95% CI: 0.607-0.892), respectively, and the DCA curves and CIC showed good clinical applicability. The Cox regression model identified age, sex, race, primary site, size, pathological type, LNM, distant metastasis, and ELNC were prognostic factors for OS in EGC patients, while a year at diagnosis, grade, marital status, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy were not independent prognostic factors.ConclusionIn this study, we identified risk factors and independent prognostic factors for the development of LNM in EGC patients, and developed a relatively accurate model to predict the development of LNM in EGC patients.

In this paper we consider fractional-order mathematical model describing the spread of the smoking model in the sense of Caputo operator with tobacco in the form of snuffing. The threshold quantity $ \mathcal{R}_0 $ and equilibria of the model are determined. We prove the existence of the solution via fixed-point theory and further examine the uniqueness of of the solution of the considered model. The new version of numerical approximation's framework for the approximation of Caputo operator is used. Finally, the numerical results are presented to justify the significance of the arbitrary fractional order derivative. The analysis shows fractional-order model of tobacco smoking in Caputo sense gives useful information as compared to the classical integer order tobacco smoking model.

Abstract In this paper, we investigate an norovirus (NoV) epidemic model with stochastic perturbation and the new definition of a nonlocal fractal–fractional derivative in the Atangana–Baleanu–Caputo (ABC) sense. First we present some basic properties including equilibria and the basic reproduction number of the model. Further, we analyze that the proposed stochastic system has a unique global positive solution. Next, the sufficient conditions of the extinction and the existence of a stationary probability measure for the disease are established. Furthermore, the fractal–fractional dynamics of the proposed model under Atangana–Baleanu–Caputo (ABC) derivative of fractional order “ $${p}$$ p ” and fractal dimension “ $${q}$$ q ” have also been addressed. Besides, coupling the non-linear functional analysis with fixed point theory, the qualitative analysis of the proposed model has been performed. The numerical simulations are carried out to demonstrate the analytical results. It is believed that this study will comprehensively strengthen the theoretical basis for comprehending the dynamics of the worldwide contagious diseases.

Wave concentrators have important application value in ocean engineering. Moreover, the performance of a concentrator on structural protection is important in the context of the complex ocean environment. A series of numerical simulations of the self-protected energy concentrator (SPEC) is performed under nonlinear wave conditions. The SPEC includes eight truncated cylinders arranged in a concentric circle. The performance of SPEC and the distribution of fluid field are studied by establishing a computational fluid dynamics (CFDs) model. It can be concluded that increasing wave steepness can weaken the self-protection performance and concentration effects due to its strong nonlinearity. The wave directions have little effect on the performance of SPEC. In addition, the change based on the target wave number can result in poor performance of SPEC.

Abstract This work presents a structural attack against the type‐II generalised Feistel network (GFN) with secret internal functions. First, equivalent structures of the 7‐round type‐II GFN are provided, which helps reduce the first guess of the secret round functions. Then, two yoyo game distinguishers are simultaneously employed for these structures to reduce the data complexity by half. Based on these two distinguishers, it is found that the original yoyo game algorithm, proposed to attack the 5‐round Feistel structure, is not suitable for these structures, owing to the characteristics of the yoyo game cycle. To solve this problem, the partial look‐up table recycling technique is presented, which can utilise collision cycles with insufficient information. This technique performs better as the width of each branch ‘n’ grows. For yoyo game attacks, this study systematically investigates its cycle characteristics to determine the reason for the short collision cycle. For 7‐round type‐II GFNs, this work presents the first decomposition thus far, which can be executed within a time complexity of O(n24n + 3) and a data complexity of O(23n + 2). We believe this work enriches the yoyo game attack and the application of type‐II GFNs.

Abstract Background Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) can increase cardiovascular risk. However, the association between LDL-C change and functional outcomes in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients who underwent reperfusion therapy remains unclear. Methods Patients who received reperfusion therapy were consecutively enrolled. LDL-C measurement was conducted at the emergency department immediately after admission and during hospitalization. The change of LDL-C level (ΔLDL-C) was calculated by subtracting the lowest LDL-C among all measurements during hospitalization from the admission LDL-C. Poor functional outcome was defined as modified Rankin Scale (mRS) > 2 at 90 days. Results A total of 432 patients were enrolled (mean age 69.2 ± 13.5 years, 54.6 % males). The mean LDL-C level at admission was 2.55 ± 0.93 mmol/L. The median ΔLDL-C level was 0.43 mmol/L (IQR 0.08–0.94 mmol/L). A total of 263 (60.9 %) patients had poor functional outcomes at 90 days. There was no significant association between admission LDL-C level and functional outcome (OR 0.99, 95 % CI 0.77–1.27, p = 0.904). ΔLDL-C level was positively associated with poor functional outcome (OR 1.80, 95 % CI 1,12-2.91, p = 0.016). When patients were divided into tertiles according to ΔLDL-C, those in the upper tertile (T3, 0.80–3.98 mmol/L) were positively associated with poor functional outcomes compared to patients in the lower tertile (T1, -0.91-0.13 mmol/L) (OR 2.56, 95 % CI 1.22–5.36, p = 0.013). The risk of poor functional outcome increased significantly with ΔLDL-C tertile (P-trend = 0.010). Conclusions In AIS patients who underwent reperfusion therapy, the decrease in LDL-C level during hospitalization was significantly associated with poor functional outcomes at 90 days.

Cost-effectively improving the performance of biochar is essential for its large-scale practical application. In this work, the agro-industrial by-products copper slag and tobacco straw were employed for the preparation of modified biochar (CSBC). The obtained CSBC exhibited satisfactory capacity on Se(IV) immobilization of 190.53 mg/g, with surface interactions determined by the monolayer and mainly chemisorption. The removal mechanisms included chemical reduction, electrostatic attraction, co-precipitation, and formation of complexations. Interestingly, the existence of Cu2Se structure after adsorption indicated the involvement of Cu species within Se(IV) elimination. Moreover, the industrial agricultural practicality of CSBC was evaluated by regeneration tests, economic assessment, and pot experiments. The results demonstrate that iron species-modified biochar prepared from two agro-industrial by-products is a promising and feasible candidate for selenite removal from wastewater.

Circular RNA (circRNAs), an important member of the non-coding RNA (ncRNA) family, are widely expressed in a variety of biological cells. Owing to their stable structures, sequence conservations, and cell- or tissue-specific expressions, these RNA have become a popular subject of scientific research. With the development of sequencing methods, it has been revealed that circRNAs exert their biological function by sponging microRNAs (miRNAs), regulating transcription, or binding to proteins. Humans have historically been significantly impacted by various types of cancer. Studies have shown that circRNAs are abnormally expressed in various cancers and are involved in the occurrence and development of malignant tumors, such as tumor cell proliferation, migration, and invasion. As one of its star molecules, circ_0007534 is upregulated in colorectal, cervical, and pancreatic cancers; is closely related to the occurrence, development, and prognosis of tumors; and is expected to become a novel tumor marker and therapeutic target. This article briefly reviews the expression and mechanism of circ_0007534 in malignant tumors based on the domestic and foreign literature.

A fractional system for transmission dynamics behavior of influenza infection with two strains is investigated and applied to the qualitative assess of crossing immunities on the expansion of the disease. The generalized mathematical model is significantly more informative regarding the infection outbreak and gives a deep description of the infection’s dynamic process. We firstly take the integer order system given in current literature and then we globalize it by applying the Caputo operator of fractional derivatives. Moreover, we present the rudimentary results of the Caputo operator for the examination of the system, comprising the basic reproduction number R0 and equilibrium points stabilities with the help of the Routh–Hurwitz and the Lyapunov operators techniques. We also focus on the approximate root. For simulations, we apply the famous generalize predictor–corrector Adams–Bashforth Moulton method, which shows the impact of two strains of influenza disease.

BackgroundNeutrophils and albumin are associated with outcomes in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS). We aimed to explore the association between the neutrophil percentage-to-albumin ratio (NPAR), a novel marker of inflammation and oxidative stress, and the 3-month functional outcome in AIS patients with reperfusion therapy.MethodsThis single-center, retrospective cohort study consecutively enrolled AIS patients with reperfusion therapy. Neutrophils and albumin were collected on admission. The primary outcome was a poor functional outcome, which was defined as a modified Rankin scale score of 3–6 at 3 months.ResultsA total of 647 patients with AIS who received reperfusion therapy were analyzed. The mean age was 68.9 ± 13.9 years, and 358 (55.3%) of the patients were men. The median NPAR was 1.89 (interquartile range [IQR] 1.64–2.09). The percentage of patients with a 3-month poor functional outcome was 57.0% (369/647). NPAR was positively associated with a poor functional outcome (odds ratio [OR] 2.76, 95% CI: 1.52–5.03, p = 0.001). When patients were classified into tertiles, patients in the upper tertile (2.03–7.59) had a higher risk of poor outcome than patients in the lower tertile after adjusting for potential confounders (0.78–1.73) (OR 2.10, 95% CI: 1.28–3.42, p = 0.003). The risk of poor outcome increased with NPAR tertiles (p-trend = 0.003). The optimal cut-off value of the NPAR for predicting a poor outcome was 1.72, with a sensitivity of 0.75, and a specificity of 0.43.ConclusionNeutrophil percentage-to-albumin ratio was significantly associated with 3-month poor functional outcomes in patients with AIS who received reperfusion therapy.

BackgroundTo explore the correlation between visual field (VF) defect values and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness for intracranial tumor and glaucoma patients.MethodsRetrospective analysis is performed for the intracranial and glaucoma patients, whose VF defect values were measured with Octopus perimeter cluster analysis, RNFL thickness, ganglion cell layer (GCL) thickness, and optic disk parameters measured with swept-source OCT. The differences between VF and RNFL (including the data of optic disc) are calculated. The correlation between VF defect values and RNFL and GCL thickness are explored.ResultsIn total 43 eyes of 29 patients with intracranial tumor and 31 eyes of 19 patients with glaucoma were enrolled. The thickness of RNFL not only for the whole (360°), but also for the four quadrants was thinner in the glaucoma group than those of the intracranial tumor group (p). This article captures the effects of secondary markets on the durable goods with game theory technology. Firstly, under monopoly in production, secondary markets both improve the producer’s profits and extend the market size. Secondly, to improve the profits, the producer launches the secondary markets although he/she undertakes a loss in the secondary markets. Thirdly, under large preference (wealth) difference, the producer prices as a type of luxury. Finally, the conditions about the producer pricing are identified. In summary, this article establishes the general framework of durable goods. The wealth difference is considered to analyze the effects of wealth on the demand of both the new product market and the secondary markets. The producer’s optimal decisions depend on the number of all types of consumers. Both the wealth difference and the number of all types of consumers jointly determine the price of new and used goods.

ObjectiveTo investigate the current management of thrombolysis related hemorrhagic transformation (HT) in real-world practice, and whether these treatments would reduce the risk of 3-month death and hematoma expansion after HT.MethodsA multicenter retrospective study was performed in three comprehensive stroke centers in China (West China Hospital, The First People’s Hospital of Ziyang, and Mianyang Central Hospital) between January 1st 2012 and December 31th 2020. Participants were patients diagnosed with HT after intravenous thrombolytics on brain computed tomography (CT) within 36 h after stroke onset. The treatment after thrombolysis related HT included aggressive therapy (procoagulant, neurosurgical treatment) and dehydration therapy (mannitol or glycerin and fructose). The primary clinical outcome was 3-month death. The primary radiographic outcome was hematoma expansion, defined as a 33% increase in the hematoma volume using the (A × B × C)/2 method on follow-up imaging.ResultsOf 538 patients with ischemic stroke receiving thrombolysis included during the study period, 94 patients (17.4%) were diagnosed with HT, 50% (47/94) of whom were symptomatic HT. The 3-month death was 31.5% (29/92), with two patients having been lost to follow up. A total of 68 patients (72.3%) had follow-up brain CT scans after HT detection for evaluating hematoma expansion, of whom 14.7% (10/68) had hematoma expansion. Among the 10 patients with hematoma expansion, 7 patients were from symptomatic HT group, and 3 patients were from the asymptomatic hematoma group. In regard to escalation in therapy, six patients received neurosurgical treatment and three patients had a fresh frozen plasma infusion. In addition, dehydration therapy was the most common management after HT diagnosis [87.2% (82 of 94)]. In the multivariable models, refusing any treatment after HT diagnosis was the sole factor associated with increased 3-month death (odds ratio, 13.6; 95% CI, 3.98–56.9) and hematoma expansion risk (odds ratio, 8.54; 95% CI, 1.33–70.1). In regard to the effects of aggressive therapy, a non-significant association of receiving hemostatic/neurosurgery therapy with a lower 3-month death and hematoma expansion risk was observed (all P > 0.05).ConclusionRefusing any treatment after HT detection had a significant trend of increasing 3-month death and hematoma expansion risk after HT. Our finding of hematoma expansion among patients with asymptomatic HT in non-western populations suggests an opportunity for intervention. Very few patients after thrombolysis related HT diagnosis received procoagulant or neurosurgical therapies. Large multicenter studies enrolling diverse populations are needed to examine the efficacy of these therapies on different HT subtypes.

Background and PurposeBlood pressure in the days following endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) can influence functional outcomes of patients who have suffered an acute ischemic stroke, but whether the same is true of blood pressure during the first few hours after EVT is unclear.MethodsSeveral blood pressure parameters were retrospectively analyzed in acute ischemic stroke patients who underwent EVT at West China Hospital from March 2016 to December 2019. Baseline blood pressure, speed of blood pressure reduction, postoperative blood pressure, degree of blood pressure reduction, and quality of blood pressure management were evaluated during the first 24 h after EVT. We explored whether these parameters during different time windows correlated significantly with patients' modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score at 90 days.ResultsAnalysis of 163 patients showed that poor functional outcome (mRS scores 3–6) correlated significantly with higher postoperative blood pressure and worse blood pressure management during the first 6 h after EVT. Postoperative systolic blood pressure at 37 min after EVT was significantly higher in patients with poor outcome (141 mmHg) than in those with good outcome (mRS scores 0–2; 122 mmHg, p = 0.006), and systolic pressure >136 mmHg at this time point was associated with a significantly higher risk of poor outcome, before and after adjusting for other risk factors (adjusted OR 0.395, 95% CI 0.20–0.79).ConclusionsAmong acute ischemic patients who successfully undergo recanalization, adequate blood pressure management during the first 30–40 min after EVT may be important for ensuring good 90-day functional outcomes.

Growing evidences reveal that Nrf2-mediated antioxidant defense response and mitophagy are involved in the toxic mechanism of heavy metals, but the effects of molybdenum (Mo) and cadmium (Cd) co-exposure on Nrf2-mediated antioxidant defense response and mitophagy in duck hypothalamus have yet to be elucidated. Herein, 40 healthy 7-day-old ducks were randomly assigned to 4 groups and fed diets containing different doses of Mo or/and Cd for 16 weeks, respectively. The data demonstrated that Mo or/and Cd notably elevated their contents in hypothalamus, decreased Cu, Fe, Zn and Se contents, caused pathological damage and oxidative stress accompanied by elevating MDA content and reducing CAT, T-AOC, T-SOD, GSH-Px activities. Moreover, Mo or/and Cd not only restrained Nrf2 pathway by decreasing Nrf2, HO-1, NQO1, GST, CAT, SOD1, GCLM mRNA expression levels and Nrf2 protein expression level, but also disturbed mitochondrial dynamics and triggered PINK1/Parkin-mediated mitophagy by enhancing MFF, PINK1, Parkin, Bnip3, LC3A, LC3B mRNA expression levels and PINK1, Parkin, LC3B-II/LC3B-I protein expression levels, inhibiting Mfn1, Mfn2, OPA1, P62 mRNA expression levels and P62 protein expression level, and facilitating the colocalization between LC3 and HSP60. The changes of above factors were most remarkable under Mo and Cd co-treatment. Overall, the results elucidate that Mo and Cd can synergistically inhibit Nrf2-mediated antioxidant defense response and activate PINK1/Parkin pathway-dependent mitophagy in duck hypothalamus, whose mechanism is somehow related to Mo and Cd accumulation.

Abstract The issue of security and privacy plays an important role in the Internet of Things (IoT) and directly affects its wide applications. In order to meet the security requirements in the IoT environment, a series of lightweight encryption schemes have been proposed. Meanwhile, cryptanalysis against these schemes is critical to the security of IoT. In this paper, a practical distinguishing attack on an IoT‐friendly lightweight cipher ALLPC is presented. Specifically, it is found that there exists a fixed point in the differential of ALLPC's S‐box, then a differential trail with a period of 14‐round has been proposed. By connecting to the periodic differential trail, a differential trail is constructed for the full‐round ALLPC with a probability of 2−24. Applying such property, one can distinguish the full‐round ALLPC block cipher from a random permutation in about 10 min on a laptop.

Marsh gas is an important type of renewable energies and plays important role to solve the energy issue in remote countryside. This article captures the development of marsh gas in Gongcheng County of China with game theory model. Firstly, the development history of marsh gas in Gongcheng County is introduced. Secondly, the economic effects of all subsidy strategy are discussed. Subsidy to family marsh gas popularizes the marsh gas. Thirdly, whether to subsidize firms depends on transportation costs. Therefore, for the disperse residents, subsidy to family marsh gas seems more rational than that to firms. For concentrated residents, the conclusions are contrary. Inflammation drives the development of depression and may affect neurotransmitters and thus neurocircuits increase the risk of depression. To investigate the influence of inhibition of inflammatory pathways on the biogenic amine neurotransmitters metabolism in depressive rats, sertraline, and meloxicam, the inhibitors of arachidonic acid - cyclooxygenase-2/lipoxygenase (AA-COX-2/5-LO) pathways, were given to depressive rats. After the development of depression model by chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) for 6 weeks, Successful modeling rats were selected and randomly divided into CUMS group and medication administration group. After given medicine, The biogenic amine neurotransmitters in rat cortex and hippocampus were measured by high-performance liquid chromatography equipped with an electrochemical detector (HPLC-ECD). Compared with the normal group, the concentration of norepinephrine (NE) significantly decreased and the concentrations of Tyrosine (Tyr), Tryptophan (Trp), 3,4-dihydroxyphenyl acetic acid (DOPAC), 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylglycol (MHPG), homovanillic acid (HVA) and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) significantly increased in the CUMS group. Sertraline significantly inhibited the elevation of 5-HIAA. Meloxicam inhibited the decrease of NE level in CUMS-induced rat and the increase of Trp, MHPG, and 5-HIAA level in a dose-dependent manner. Caffeic acid inhibited the decrease of NE and the increase of Trp and MHPG in a dose-dependent manner. The inhibition of AA-COX-2/5-LO pathways can improve the behaviors of depression rats and suppress CUMS-induced changes in biogenic amines. Compared with the single-dose lipoxygenase (5-LO) or Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitor, the combination treatment with meloxicam 1 mg/kg and caffeic acid 10 mg/kg have no significant improvement in CUMS-induced depression behavior and the level of cortical monoamine neurotransmitters and their metabolites. Recently, flexible sensors based on conductive hydrogels have been widely used in human health monitoring, human movement detection and soft robotics due to their excellent flexibility, high water content, good biocompatibility. However, traditional conductive hydrogels tend to freeze and lose their flexibility at low temperature, which greatly limits their application in a low temperature environment. Herein, according to the mechanism that multi−hydrogen bonds can inhibit ice crystal formation by forming hydrogen bonds with water molecules, we used butanediol (BD) and N−hydroxyethyl acrylamide (HEAA) monomer with a multi−hydrogen bond structure to construct LiCl/p(HEAA−co−BD) conductive hydrogel with antifreeze property. The results indicated that the prepared LiCl/p(HEAA−co−BD) conductive hydrogel showed excellent antifreeze property with a low freeze point of −85.6 °C. Therefore, even at −40 °C, the hydrogel can still stretch up to 400% with a tensile stress of ~450 KPa. Moreover, the hydrogel exhibited repeatable adhesion property (~30 KPa), which was attributed to the existence of multiple hydrogen bonds. Furthermore, a simple flexible sensor was fabricated by using LiCl/p(HEAA−co−BD) conductive hydrogel to detect compression and stretching responses. This paper presents generic structural cryptanalysis against type-I generalized Feistel networks (GFN), in which all the inner transformations are unknown. The target of our attack is to retrieve all the unknown round functions. We provide an improved yoyo game distinguisher, in which one rejects a large group of start guesses by a single wrong guess, hence is quite advantageous for reducing the complexity. Next, we exploit this distinguisher to develop a recovery attack of such structure and find the look-up tables of the first, eighth, and ninth round functions. Then by the encryption and decryption similarity, we recover the LUTs of the second, third, and tenth round functions from the decrypt direction. Finally, we retrieve the rest rounds by using the analytic relationships between the plaintexts and their four-round encryption results. Our complete recovery requires time complexity O(23.36n) and memory O(2n), where n is the branch size. For 64-bit block cipher, our result will approximate a real-life attack. This paper is the first recovery attack against ten-round type-I GFN.

Background: Elevated admission glucose and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels have been suggested to be associated with 90-day functional outcomes in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients with endovascular thrombectomy (EVT). In this paper, we present a new structure-recovery cryptanalysis against 16-round Skipjack-like structure in which all the inner transformations are unknown. Our attack is divided into three phases. In the first phase, we use yoyo game to recover the outermost round functions. In the second phase, we use integral attack to achieve the round functions in round 2/3/4/13/14/15. A series of equations based on integral distinguishers is established to recover these inner transformations. However, effective integral distinguishers cannot be constructed for shorter rounds. For this reason, we propose a guess and determine attack to recover the residue round functions in the third phase. For n-bit Skipjack-like cipher, our attack can be executed within time complexity O(22.81×n/4) and data complexity O(2n/2), and thus can lead to a practical attack against 16-round Skipjack cipher.

In this paper, we provide two types of pattern matrices for the diffusion layer P, both can be used as classification criteria for the substitution-permutation network (SPN) structures: if the pattern matrices of distinct SPN structures are equal, then these structures may have the same impossible differential (ID)/zero correlation linear hull (ZC) and the same differential/linear active S-boxes. We introduce some interesting properties of the pattern matrices. Applying our results, we arrive at several interesting facts. First, all the SPN structures with MDS-type diffusion layers fall into the same class and have the same ID/ZC/minimum number of active S-boxes. Second, we provide several interesting properties of pattern matrices and build the links between the P-layer and that after several popular operations. Finally, we investigate the properties of pattern matrices for bit shuffles, the pattern matrices keep the same if and only if the n-partition characteristics of them are equal. Our results are helpful in the designing of block ciphers.

Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.), a turf grass species that is hypertolerant of cadmium (Cd), is a potential phytoremediation material for soil polluted with Cd. However, the mechanism of Cd phytotoxicity in Kentucky bluegrass is unclear. Here, we compared the phenotype, induction of oxidative stress, and structural and non-structural carbohydrate contents between a Cd-tolerant genotype (‘Midnight’, M) and Cd-sensitive genotype (‘Rugby’, R). The results showed that both genotypes accumulated more Cd in the roots, whereas the R genotype distributed more Cd into the leaves compared with the M genotype. In both genotypes, Cd inhibited the length and fresh weight of the leaves and roots; increased the peroxidase (POD) activity but inhibited ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and catalase (CAT) activity; and increased the superoxide radical (O2−), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and malondialdehyde (MDA) contents. However, the M genotype exhibited lower root length inhibition, and the H2O2 and MDA contents confirmed that the M genotype had increased Cd accumulation and resistance, while the R genotype exhibited a better distribution of Cd. Moreover, Cd stress significantly increased the soluble sugar, trehalose, and sucrose contents of both genotypes. Pectin, lignin, and cellulose were significantly increased to prevent the entry of Cd into the roots. The Cd-induced growth inhibition and physiological responses in Kentucky bluegrass were preliminarily explored herein, with the chelation of pectin, lignification, and antioxidant response being possible contributors to Cd detoxification in Kentucky bluegrass. In addition, the Cd-induced increase in trehalose, sucrose, and soluble sugar contents might play a pivotal role in the defense against Cd stress in Kentucky bluegrass.

Abstract Background Dysbiosis of gut microbiota are commonly reported in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and may contribute to behavioral impairment. Vitamin A (VA) plays a role in regulation of gut microbiota. This study was performed to investigate the role of VA in the changes of gut microbiota and changes of autism functions in children with ASD. Results Sixty four, aged 1 to 8 years old children with ASD completed a 6-month follow-up study with VA intervention. High-performance liquid chromatography was used to assess plasma retinol levels. The Autism Behaviour Checklist (ABC), Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS) and Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS) were used to assess autism symptoms. CD38 and acid-related orphan receptor alpha (RORA) mRNA levels were used to assess autism-related biochemical indicators’ changes. Evaluations of plasma retinol, ABC, CARS, SRS, CD38 and RORA mRNA levels were performed before and after 6 months of intervention in the 64 children. Illumina MiSeq for 16S rRNA genes was used to compare the differences in gut microbiota before and after 6 months of treatment in the subset 20 of the 64 children. After 6 months of intervention, plasma retinol, CD38 and RORA mRNA levels significantly increased (all P 0.05) in the 64 children. Background/Aims: Vitamin A (VA) protects the intestinal epithelial barrier by improving cell migration and proliferation. Our previous studies demonstrated that VA deficiency (VAD) during pregnancy suppresses the systemic and mucosal immune responses in the intestines of offspring and that VA supplementation (VAS) during early life can increase immune cell counts. However, little is known about the mechanisms by which VA regulates intestinal epithelial barrier function. Methods: Caco-2 cells were treated with all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) for 24 hours to determine the optimum ATRA concentration to which the cells in question respond. Caco-2 cells were infected with recombinant adenoviruses carrying retinoic acid receptor beta (Ad-RARβ) and small interfering RARβ(siRARβ) to assess the effects of RARβ signalling on the expression of specific proteins. A siTLR4 lentivirus was used to knockdown Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) in Caco-2 cells to determine its role in the protective effects of VA on the intestinal epithelial barrier, and experiments involving TLR4-knock-out mice were performed to verify the effect of TLR4. VA normal (VAN), VAD and VAS rat models were established to confirm that changes in RARβ, TLR4 and ZO-2 expression levels that occurred following decreases or increases in retinol concentrations in vivo, and the permeability of the Caco-2 cell monolayer, as well as that of the epithelial barrier of the rat intestine was detected by measuring transepithelial resistance (TER) or performing enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Retinoic acid receptor (RAR), toll like receptor (TLR) and tight junction (TJ) mRNA and protein expression levels in Caco-2 cells and the colon monolayers in the rat and mouse models were measured by PCR and western blotting, respectively. Co-immunoprecipitation (co-IP) and immunofluorescence staining were performed to assess the interactions among RARβ, TLR4 and zonula occluden-2 (ZO-2) in Caco-2 cells, and chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) assay was performed to assess the binding between RARβ and the TLR4 promoter sequence in Caco-2 cells. Results: In the present study, ATRA treatment not only increased the TER of the Caco-2 monolayer but also up-regulated the expression levels of RARβ, TLR4 and ZO-2 in Caco-2 cells. The expression levels of these three proteins were significantly decreased in the colonic epithelial monolayers of VAD rats compared with those of VAN rats and were significantly increased following VAS in the corresponding group compared with the control group. Furthermore, the above changes in TLR4 and ZO-2 expression levels were augmented or attenuated by Ad-RARβ or siRARβ infection, respectively, in Caco-2 cells. Interestingly, siTLR4 down-regulated ZO-2 expression but did not affect RARβ expression in Caco-2 cells, and in VAD mice the lack of TLR4 did not affect ZO-2 expression. We noted direct interactions between RARβ and TLR4, TLR4 and ZO-2 in Caco-2 cells, and ChIP assay showed that RARβ could bind to the TLR4 promoter but not the ZO-2 promoter in Caco-2 cells. Conclusion: Taken together, our results indicate that RARβ enhanced ZO-2 expression by regulating TLR4 to improve intestinal epithelial barrier function in Caco-2 cells, as well as in rat and mouse models, but not in humans.

Abstract A new acidly sensitive PEGylated polyethylenimine linked by Schiff base (PEG-s-PEI) was designed to render pH-sensitive PEGylation nanoassemblies through multiple interactions with indomethacin and docetaxel (DTX). DTX nanoassemblies driven by PEG-s-PEI thus formulated exhibited an excellent pH-sensitivity PEGylation cleavage performance at extracellular pH of tumor microenvironment, compared to normal tissues, thereby long circulated in blood but were highly phagocytosed by tumor cells. Consequently, this smart pH-sensitive PEGylation cleavage provided an efficient strategy to target tumor microenvironment, in turn afforded superior therapeutic outcome in anti-tumor activity.
