We present new Galactic reddening maps of the high Galactic latitude sky using DESI imaging and spectroscopy. We directly measure the reddening of 2.6 million stars by comparing the observed stellar colors in $g-r$ and $r-z$ from DESI imaging with the synthetic colors derived from DESI spectra from the first two years of the survey. The reddening in the two colors is on average consistent with the \cite{fitzpatrick_correcting_1999} extinction curve with $R_\mathrm{V}=3.1$. We find that our reddening maps differ significantly from the commonly used \cite{schlegel_maps_1998} (SFD) reddening map (by up to 80 mmag in $E(B-V)$), and we attribute most of this difference to systematic errors in the SFD map. To validate the reddening map, we select a galaxy sample with extinction correction based on our reddening map, and this yields significantly better uniformity than the SFD extinction correction. Finally, we discuss the potential systematic errors in the DESI reddening measurements, including the photometric calibration errors that are the limiting factor on our accuracy. We introduce the emPDF (Empirical Distribution Function), a novel dynamical modeling method that infers the gravitational potential from kinematic tracers with optimal statistical efficiency under the minimal assumption of steady state. emPDF determines the best-fit potential by maximizing the similarity between instantaneous kinematics and the time-averaged phase-space distribution function (DF), which is empirically constructed from observation upon the theoretical foundation of oPDF (Han et al. 2016). This approach eliminates the need for presumed functional forms of DFs or orbit libraries required by conventional DF- or orbit-based methods. emPDF stands out for its flexibility, efficiency, and capability in handling observational effects, making it preferable to the popular Jeans equation or other minimal assumption methods, especially for the Milky Way (MW) outer halo where tracers often have limited sample size and poor data quality. We apply emPDF to infer the MW mass profile using Gaia DR3 data of satellite galaxies and globular clusters, obtaining consistent measurements with the constraints from simulation-informed DF fitting (Li et al. 2020). While the simulation-informed DF offers superior precision owing to the additional information extracted from simulations, emPDF is independent of such supplementary knowledge and applicable to general tracer populations. We present ~ 126 new spectroscopically identified members of the GD-1 tidal stream obtained with the 5000-fiber Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI). We confirm the existence of a ``cocoon'' which is broad (FWHM~2.932deg~460pc) and kinematically hot (velocity dispersion, sigma~5-8km/s) component that surrounds a narrower (FWHM~0.353deg~55pc) and colder (sigma~ 2.2-2.6km/s) thin stream component (based on a median per star velocity precision of 2.7km/s). The cocoon extends over at least a ~ 20deg segment of the stream observed by DESI. The thin and cocoon components have similar mean values of [Fe/H]: -2.54+/- 0.04dex and -2.45+/-0.06dex suggestive of a common origin. The data are consistent with the following scenarios for the origin of the cocoon. The progenitor of the GD-1 stream was an accreted globular cluster (GC) and: (a) the cocoon was produced by pre-accretion tidal stripping of the GC while it was still inside its parent dwarf galaxy; (b) the cocoon is debris from the parent dwarf galaxy; (c) an initially thin GC tidal stream was heated by impacts from dark subhalos in the Milky Way; (d) an initially thin GC stream was heated by a massive Sagittarius dwarf galaxy; or a combination of some these. In the first two cases the velocity dispersion and mean metallicity are consistent with the parent dwarf galaxy having a halo mass of ~0^9\msun. We present high-cadence photometric and spectroscopic observations of supernova (SN) 2024ggi, a Type II SN with flash spectroscopy features which exploded in the nearby galaxy NGC 3621 at $\sim$7 Mpc. The light-curve evolution over the first 30 hours can be fit by two power law indices with a break after 22 hours, rising from $M_V \approx -12.95$ mag at +0.66 days to $M_V \approx -17.91$ mag after 7 days. In addition, the densely sampled color curve shows a strong blueward evolution over the first few days and then behaves as a normal SN II with a redward evolution as the ejecta cool. Such deviations could be due to interaction with circumstellar material (CSM). Early high- and low-resolution spectra clearly show high-ionization flash features from the first spectrum to +3.42 days after the explosion. From the high-resolution spectra, we calculate the CSM velocity to be 37 $\pm~4~\mathrm{km\,s^{-1}} $. We also see the line strength evolve rapidly from 1.22 to 1.49 days in the earliest high-resolution spectra. Comparison of the low-resolution spectra with CMFGEN models suggests that the pre-explosion mass-loss rate of SN 2024ggi falls in a range of $10^{-3}$ to $10^{-2}$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$, which is similar to that derived for SN 2023ixf. However, the rapid temporal evolution of the narrow lines in the spectra of SN 2024ggi ($R_\mathrm{CSM} \sim 2.7 \times 10^{14} \mathrm{cm}$) could indicate a smaller spatial extent of the CSM than in SN 2023ixf ($R_\mathrm{CSM} \sim 5.4 \times 10^{14} \mathrm{cm}$) which in turn implies lower total CSM mass for SN 2024ggi., Comment: 23 pages, 15 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in ApJL

We present an analysis of very early high-resolution spectroscopic observations of the Type II supernova (SN) 2024ggi, a nearby SN that occurred in the galaxy NGC 3621 at a distance of 7.24 Mpc ($z\approx0.002435$). These observations represent the earliest high-resolution spectra of a Type II SN ever made. We analyzed the very early-phase spectroscopic evolution of SN 2024ggi obtained in a short interval at 20.6 and 27.8 h after its discovery, or 26.6 and 33.8 h after the SN first light. Observations were obtained with the high-resolution spectrograph MIKE ($R \approx 22600 - 28000$) at the 6.5 m Magellan Clay Telescope, located at the Las Campanas Observatory, on the night of April 12, 2024 UT. We analyzed the evolution of ions of HI, HeI, HeII, NIII, CIII, SiIV, NIV and CIV detected across the spectra. We modeled these features with multiple Gaussian and Lorentzian profiles, and estimated their velocities and full widths at half maximum (FWHMs). The spectra show asymmetric emission lines of HI, HeII, CIV, and NIV that can be described by narrow Gaussian cores with broader Lorentzian wings, and symmetric narrow emission lines of HeI, NIII, and CIII. The emission lines of HeI are detected only in the first spectrum, indicating the rapid ionization of HeI to HeII. The narrow components of the emission lines show a systematic blueshift relative to their zero-velocity position, with an increase of $\sim18$ km s$^{-1}$ in the average velocity between the two epochs. The broad Lorentzian components show a blueshift in velocity relative to the narrow components, and a significant increase in the average velocity of $\sim103$ km s$^{-1}$. Such a rapid evolution and significant ionization changes in a short period of time were never observed before, and are probably a consequence of the radiative acceleration generated in the SN explosion., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication at A&A

We conducted an in-depth analysis of candidate member stars located in the peripheries of three ultra-faint dwarf (UFD) galaxy satellites of the Milky Way: Bo\"otes I (Boo1), Bo\"otes II (Boo2), and Segue I (Seg1). Studying these peripheral stars has previously been difficult due to contamination from the Milky Way foreground. We used $u$-band photometry from the Dark Energy Camera (DECam) to derive metallicities to efficiently select UFD candidate member stars. This approach was validated on Boo1, where we identified both previously known and new candidate member stars beyond five half-light radii. We then applied a similar procedure to Boo2 and Seg1. Our findings hinted at evidence for tidal features in Boo1 and Seg1, with Boo1 having an elongation consistent with its proper motion and Seg1 showing some distant candidate stars, a few of which are along its elongation and proper motion. We find two Boo2 stars at large distances consistent with being candidate member stars. Using a foreground contamination rate derived from the \emph{Besan\c{c}on} Galaxy model, we ascribed purity estimates to each candidate member star. We recommend further spectroscopic studies on the newly identified high-purity members. Our technique offers promise for future endeavors to detect candidate member stars at large radii in other systems, leveraging metallicity-sensitive filters with the Legacy Survey of Space and Time and the new, narrow-band Ca HK filter on DECam., Comment: 25 pages, 13 figures, machine-readable Tables 3, 4, 5 in source. In the cold dark matter paradigm, our Galaxy is predicted to contain >10000 dark matter subhaloes in the $10^5-10^8M_\odot$ range which should be completely devoid of stars. Stellar streams are sensitive to the presence of these subhaloes, which can create small-scale features in streams if they pass closely enough. Modelling these encounters can therefore, potentially recover the subhalo's properties. In this work, we demonstrate this for streams generated in numerical simulations, modelled on eccentric orbits in a realistic Milky Way potential, which includes the Large Magellanic Cloud and the subhalo itself. We focus on a mock model of the ATLAS-Aliqa Uma stream and inject a $10^7 M_\odot$ subhalo, creating a similar discontinuous morphology to current observations. We then explore how well subhalo properties are recovered using mock stream observations, consisting of no observational errors, as well as assuming realistic observational setups. These setups include present day style observations, and what will be possible with 4MOST and Gaia DR5 in the future. We show that we can recover all parameters describing the impact even with uncertainties matching existing data, including subhalo positions, velocities, mass and scale radius. Modelling the subhalo on an orbit instead of assuming an impulse approximation, we greatly reduce the degeneracy between subhalo mass and velocity seen in previous works. However, we find a slight bias in the subhalo mass (~0.1 dex). This demonstrates that we should be able to reliably extract the properties of subhaloes with stellar streams in the near future., Comment: 13 pages, 14 figures. Submitted to MMRAS. The growing number of Milky Way satellites detected in recent years has introduced a new focus for stellar abundance analysis. Abundances of stars in satellites have been used to probe the nature of these systems and their chemical evolution. However, for most satellites, only centrally located stars have been examined. This paper presents an analysis of three stars in the Tucana V system, one in the inner region and two at $\sim$10\arcmin\ (7--10 half-light radii) from the center. We find a remarkable chemical diversity between the stars. One star exhibits enhancements in rapid neutron-capture elements (an $r$-I star), and another is highly enhanced in C, N, and O but with low neutron-capture abundances (a CEMP-no star). The metallicities of the stars analyzed span more than 1~dex from $\mathrm{[Fe/H]}=-3.55$ to $-2.46$. This, combined with a large abundance range of other elements like Ca, Sc, and Ni, confirms that Tuc~V is an ultra-faint dwarf (UFD) galaxy. The variation in abundances, highlighted by [Mg/Ca] ratios ranging from $+0.89$ to $-0.75$, among the stars, demonstrates that the chemical enrichment history of Tuc~V was very inhomogeneous. Tuc~V is only the second UFD galaxy in which stars located at large distances from the galactic center have been analyzed, along with Tucana~II. The chemical diversity seen in these two galaxies, driven by the composition of the non-central member stars, suggests that distant member stars are important to include when classifying faint satellites and that these systems may have experienced more complex chemical enrichment histories than previously anticipated., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Blue Horizontal Branch (BHB) stars, excellent distant tracers for probing the Milky Way's halo density profile, are distinguished in the $(g-r)_0$ vs $(i-z)_0$ color space from another class of stars, blue straggler stars (BSs). We develop a Bayesian mixture model to classify BHB stars using high-precision photometry data from the Dark Energy Survey Data Release 2 (DES DR2). We select $\sim2100$ highly-probable BHBs based on their $griz$ photometry and the associated uncertainties, and use these stars to map the stellar halo over the Galactocentric radial range $20 \lesssim R \lesssim 70$ kpc. After excluding known stellar overdensities, we find that the number density $n_\star$ of BHBs can be represented by a power law density profile $n_\star \propto R^{-\alpha}$ with an index of $\alpha=4.28_{-0.12}^{+0.13}$, consistent with existing literature values. In addition, we examine the impact of systematic errors and the spatial inhomogeneity on the fitted density profile. Our work demonstrates the effectiveness of high-precision $griz$ photometry in selecting BHB stars. The upcoming photometric survey from the Rubin Observatory, expected to reach depths 2-3 magnitudes greater than DES during its 10-year mission, will enable us to investigate the density profile of the Milky Way's halo out to the virial radius, unravelling the complex processes of formation and evolution in our Galaxy., Comment: 22 pages, 18 figures. The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is the Milky Way's most massive satellite galaxy, which only recently (~2 billion years ago) fell into our Galaxy. Since stellar atmospheres preserve their natal cloud's composition, the LMC's recent infall makes its most ancient, metal-deficient ("low-metallicity") stars unique windows into early star formation and nucleosynthesis in a formerly distant region of the high-redshift universe. Previously, identifying such stars in the LMC was challenging. But new techniques have opened this window, now enabling tests of whether the earliest element enrichment and star formation in distant, extragalactic proto-galaxies deviated from what occurred in the proto-Milky Way. Here we present the elemental abundances of 10 stars in the LMC with iron-to-hydrogen ratios ranging from ~1/300th to ~1/12,000th of the Sun. Our most metal-deficient star is 50 times more metal-deficient than any in the LMC with available detailed chemical abundance patterns, and is likely enriched by a single extragalactic first star supernova. This star lacks significant carbon-enhancement, as does our overall sample, in contrast with the lowest metallicity Milky Way stars. This, and other abundance differences, affirm that the extragalactic early LMC experienced diverging enrichment processes compared to the early Milky Way. Milky Way globular clusters (GCs) display chemical enrichment in a phenomenon called multiple stellar populations (MSPs). While the enrichment mechanism is not fully understood, there is a correlation between a cluster's mass and the fraction of enriched stars found therein. However, present-day GC masses are often smaller than their masses at the time of formation due to dynamical mass loss. In this work, we explore the relationship between mass and MSPs using the stellar stream 300S. We present the chemical abundances of eight red giant branch member stars in 300S with high-resolution spectroscopy from Magellan/MIKE. We identify one enriched star characteristic of MSPs and no detectable metallicity dispersion, confirming that the progenitor of 300S was a globular cluster. The fraction of enriched stars (12.5\%) observed in our 300S stars is less than the 50\% of stars found enriched in Milky Way GCs of comparable present-day mass ($\sim10^{4.5}$\msun). We calculate the mass of 300S's progenitor and compare it to the initial masses of intact GCs, finding that 300S aligns well with the trend between the system mass at formation and enrichment. 300S's progenitor may straddle the critical mass threshold for the formation of MSPs and can therefore serve as a benchmark for the stellar enrichment process. Additionally, we identify a CH star, with high abundances of \textit{s}-process elements, probably accreted from a binary companion. The rarity of such binaries in intact GCs may imply stellar streams permit the survival of binaries that would otherwise be disrupted., Comment: 15 pages, 7 tables, 8 figures. We present the discovery of Ursa Major III/UNIONS 1, the least luminous known satellite of the Milky Way, which is estimated to have an absolute V-band magnitude of $+2.2^{+0.4}_{-0.3}$ mag, equivalent to a total stellar mass of 16$^{+6}_{-5}$ M$_{\odot}$. Ursa Major III/UNIONS 1 was uncovered in the deep, wide-field Ultraviolet Near Infrared Optical Northern Survey (UNIONS) and is consistent with an old ($\tau > 11$ Gyr), metal-poor ([Fe/H] $\sim -2.2$) stellar population at a heliocentric distance of $\sim$ 10 kpc. Despite being compact ($r_{\text{h}} = 3\pm1$ pc) and composed of so few stars, we confirm the reality of Ursa Major III/UNIONS 1 with Keck II/DEIMOS follow-up spectroscopy and identify 11 radial velocity members, 8 of which have full astrometric data from $Gaia$ and are co-moving based on their proper motions. Based on these 11 radial velocity members, we derive an intrinsic velocity dispersion of $3.7^{+1.4}_{-1.0}$ km s$^{-1}$ but some caveats preclude this value from being interpreted as a direct indicator of the underlying gravitational potential at this time. Primarily, the exclusion of the largest velocity outlier from the member list drops the velocity dispersion to $1.9^{+1.4}_{-1.1}$ km s$^{-1}$, and the subsequent removal of an additional outlier star produces an unresolved velocity dispersion. While the presence of binary stars may be inflating the measurement, the possibility of a significant velocity dispersion makes Ursa Major III/UNIONS 1 a high priority candidate for multi-epoch spectroscopic follow-ups to deduce to true nature of this incredibly faint satellite., Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables; Accepted for publication in ApJ

We investigate the impact of binary orbital motions on the dynamical modeling of dwarf galaxies with intrinsic line-of-sight velocity dispersions ($\sigma_{v_r}$) of 1 to 9 km/s. Using dwarf galaxies from the Auriga level-2 and level-3 simulations, we apply the Jeans Anisotropic Multi-Gaussian Expansion modelling to tracer stars before and after including binaries to recover the dynamical masses. The Merian survey is mapping $\sim$ 850 degrees$^2$ of the Hyper Suprime-Cam Strategic Survey Program (HSC-SSP) wide layer with two medium-band filters on the 4-meter Victor M. Blanco telescope at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, with the goal of carrying the first high signal-to-noise (S/N) measurements of weak gravitational lensing around dwarf galaxies. This paper presents the design of the Merian filter set: N708 ($\lambda_c = 7080 \unicode{x212B}$, $\Delta\lambda = 275\unicode{x212B}$) and N540 ($\lambda_c = 5400\unicode{x212B}$, $\Delta\lambda = 210\unicode{x212B}$). The central wavelengths and filter widths of N708 and N540 were designed to detect the $\rm H\alpha$ and $\rm [OIII]$ emission lines of galaxies in the mass range $8<\rm \log M_*/M_\odot<9$ by comparing Merian fluxes with HSC broad-band fluxes. Our filter design takes into account the weak lensing S/N and photometric redshift performance. Our simulations predict that Merian will yield a sample of $\sim$ 85,000 star-forming dwarf galaxies with a photometric redshift accuracy of $\sigma_{\Delta z/(1+z)}\sim 0.01$ and an outlier fraction of $\eta=2.8\%$ over the redshift range $0.058

We present Magellan/M2FS spectroscopy of four recently discovered Milky Way star clusters (Gran 3/Patchick~125, Gran 4, Garro 01, LP 866) and two newly discovered open clusters (Gaia 9, Gaia 10) at low Galactic latitudes. We measure line-of-sight velocities and stellar parameters ([Fe/H], $\log{g}$, $T_{\rm eff}$, [Mg/Fe]) from high resolution spectroscopy centered on the Mg triplet and identify 20-80 members per star cluster. We determine the kinematics and chemical properties of each cluster and measure the systemic proper motion and orbital properties by utilizing Gaia astrometry. We find Gran 3 to be an old, metal-poor (mean metallicity of [Fe/H]=-1.84) globular cluster located in the Galactic bulge on a retrograde orbit. Gran 4 is an old, metal-poor ([Fe/H]=-1.84) globular cluster with a halo-like orbit that happens to be passing through the Galactic plane. The orbital properties of Gran 4 are consistent with the proposed LMS-1/Wukong and/or Helmi streams merger events. Garro 01 is metal-rich ([Fe/H]=-0.30) and on a near circular orbit in the outer disk but its classification as an open cluster or globular cluster is ambiguous. . Gaia 9 and Gaia 10 are among the most distant known open clusters at $R_{GC}\sim 18, 21.2~kpc$ and most metal-poor with [Fe/H]~-0.50,-0.46 for Gaia 9 and Gaia 10, respectively. LP 866 is a nearby, metal-rich open cluster ([Fe/H]$=+0.1$). We present the discovery of 48 new and the analysis of 55, including 7 previously discovered, dwarf galaxy candidates around the giant spiral galaxy NGC~2997 using deep $BVI$ images from the KMTNet Supernova Program. Their $V$-band central surface brightness and total absolute magnitudes are in the range of 20.3--26.7 mag arcsec$^{-2}$ and --(8.02--17.69) mag, respectively, while the $I$-band effective radii are 0.14--2.97 kpc. We obtain $\alpha$ $\simeq$ --1.43 $\pm$ 0.02 for the faint-end slope of their luminosity function, comparable to previously measured values but shallower than theoretical predictions based on $\Lambda$CDM models. The distance-independent distributions of their mass and color suggest that the group could have recently accreted new massive members from the surrounding fields. The systematically bluer colors of the brighter members indicate younger stellar population and higher star formation activities in them, which appears to be consistent with similar findings from the SAGA or ELVES survey. We suggest that the massive and bluer dwarf galaxies in the group have experienced less environmental quenching due to their recent accretion, while environmental quenching is more effective for the low-mass members. The interpretation of NGC~2997 being populationally young with recent accretion of massive members is also consistent with the overall morphological distribution of the dwarf galaxies showing a lack of morphologically evolved candidates but a plethora of irregularly shaped ones. Our detection rate of dwarf galaxy candidates in the NGC~2997 group and their inferred star formation activities are comparable to those found in Milky Way analog systems from recent surveys within the magnitude limit M$_{V}$ $\lesssim$ --13 mag., Comment: 24 pages, 14 figures

In this paper we present a chemical and kinematic analysis of two ultra-faint dwarf galaxies (UFDs), Aquarius II (Aqu~II) and \text{Bo\"{o}tes II} (Boo~II), using Magellan/IMACS spectroscopy. We present the largest sample of member stars for Boo~II (12), and the largest sample of red-giant-branch members with metallicity measurements for Aqu~II (8). In both UFDs, over 80\% of targets selected based on $Gaia$ proper motions turned out to be spectroscopic members. In order to maximize the accuracy of stellar kinematic measurements, we remove the identified binary stars and RR Lyrae variables. For Aqu~II we measure a systemic velocity of $-65.3 \pm 1.8$ km s$^{-1}$ and a metallicity of [Fe/H] = $-2.57^{+0.17}_{-0.17}$. When compared with previous measurements, these values display a $\sim 6$ km s$^{-1}$ difference in radial velocity and a decrease of 0.27 dex in metallicity. Similarly for Boo~II, we measure a systemic velocity of $-130.4^{+1.4}_{-1.1}$ km s$^{-1}$, more than 10 km s$^{-1}$ different from the literature, a metallicity almost 1 dex smaller at [Fe/H] = $-2.71^{+0.11}_{-0.10}$, and a velocity dispersion 3 times smaller at $\sigma_{v_{\rm hel}} = 2.9^{+1.6}_{-1.2}$ km s$^{-1}$. Additionally, we derive systemic proper motion parameters and model the orbits of both UFDs. Finally, we highlight the extremely dark matter dominated nature of Aqu~II and compute the J-factor for both galaxies to aid searches of dark matter annihilation. Despite the small size and close proximity of Boo~II, it is an intermediate target for the indirect detection of dark matter annihilation due to its low velocity dispersion and corresponding low dark matter density., Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures, 5 tables. The ultra-faint dwarf galaxy Reticulum II (Ret II) exhibits a unique chemical evolution history, with 72 +10/-12% of its stars strongly enhanced in r-process elements. We present deep Hubble Space Telescope photometry of Ret II and analyze its star formation history. As in other ultra-faint dwarfs, the color-magnitude diagram is best fit by a model consisting of two bursts of star formation. If we assume that the bursts were instantaneous, then the older burst occurred around the epoch of reionization and formed ~80% of the stars in the galaxy, while the remainder of the stars formed ~3 Gyr later. When the bursts are allowed to have nonzero durations we obtain slightly better fits. The best-fitting model in this case consists of two bursts beginning before reionization, with approximately half the stars formed in a short (100 Myr) burst and the other half in a more extended period lasting 2.6 Gyr. Considering the full set of viable star formation history models, we find that 28% of the stars formed within 500 +/- 200 Myr of the onset of star formation. The combination of the star formation history and the prevalence of r-process-enhanced stars demonstrates that the r-process elements in Ret II must have been synthesized early in its initial star-forming phase. We therefore constrain the delay time between the formation of the first stars in Ret II and the r-process nucleosynthesis to be less than 500 Myr. We present a 6-D map of the Orphan-Chenab (OC) stream by combining the data from Southern Stellar Stream Spectroscopic Survey ($S^5$) and {\it Gaia}. We reconstruct the proper motion, radial velocity, distance, on-sky track and stellar density along the stream with spline models. The stream has a total luminosity of $M_V=-8.2$ and metallicity of $\mathrm{[Fe/H]}=-1.9$, similar to classical Milky Way (MW) satellites like Draco. The stream shows drastic changes in its physical width varying from 200 pc to 1 kpc, but a constant line of sight velocity dispersion of 5 km/ss. Despite the large apparent variation in the stellar number density along the stream, the flow rate of stars along the stream is remarkably constant. We model the 6-D stream track by a Lagrange-point stripping method with a flexible MW potential in the presence of a moving extended Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). This allows us to constrain the mass profile of the MW within the distance range 15.6 < r < 55.5 kpc, with the best measured enclosed mass of $(2.85\pm 0.1)\times 10^{11}\,M_\odot$ within 32.4 kpc. Our stream measurements are highly sensitive to the LMC mass profile with the most precise measurement of its enclosed mass made at 32.8 kpc, $(7.02\pm 0.9)\times10^{10}\, {\rm M}_\odot$. We also detect that the LMC dark matter halo extends to at least 53 kpc. The fitting of the OC stream allows us to constrain the past LMC trajectory and the degree of dynamical friction it experienced. The classical Drude model provides an accurate description of the plasma resonance of three-dimensional materials, but only partially explains two-dimensional systems where quantum mechanical effects dominate such as P:$\delta$-layers - atomically thin sheets of phosphorus dopants in silicon that induce novel electronic properties beyond traditional doping. Previously it was shown that P:$\delta$-layers produce a distinct Drude tail feature in ellipsometry measurements. However, the ellipsometric spectra could not be properly fit by modeling the $\delta$-layer as discrete layer of classical Drude metal. In particular, even for large broadening corresponding to extremely short relaxation times, a plasma resonance feature was anticipated but not evident in the experimental data. In this work, we develop a physically accurate description of this system, which reveals a general approach to designing thin films with intentionally suppressed plasma resonances. Our model takes into account the strong charge density confinement and resulting quantum mechanical description of a P:$\delta$-layer. We show that the absence of a plasma resonance feature results from a combination of two factors: i), the sharply varying charge density profile due to strong confinement in the direction of growth; and ii), the effective mass and relaxation time anisotropy due to valley degeneracy. The plasma resonance reappears when the atoms composing the $\delta$-layer are allowed to diffuse out from the plane of the layer, destroying its well-confined two-dimensional character that is critical to its novel electronic properties.

Cosmological and astrophysical observations currently provide the only robust, positive evidence for dark matter. Cosmic probes of dark matter, which seek to determine the fundamental properties of dark matter through observations of the cosmos, have emerged as a promising means to reveal the nature of dark matter. We describe the Milky Way Survey (MWS) that will be undertaken with the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) on the Mayall 4m telescope at the Kitt Peak National Observatory. Over the next 5 yr DESI MWS will observe approximately seven million stars at Galactic latitudes |b|>20 degrees, with an inclusive target selection scheme focused on the thick disk and stellar halo. MWS will also include several high-completeness samples of rare stellar types, including white dwarfs, low-mass stars within 100pc of the Sun, and horizontal branch stars. We summarize the potential of DESI to advance understanding of Galactic structure and stellar evolution. We introduce the final definitions of the main MWS target classes and estimate the number of stars in each class that will be observed. We describe our pipelines for deriving radial velocities, atmospheric parameters, and chemical abundances. We use ~500,000 spectra of unique stellar targets from the DESI Survey Validation program (SV) to demonstrate that our pipelines can measure radial velocities to ~1 km/s and [Fe/H] accurate to ~0.2 dex for typical stars in our main sample. We present the first detailed study comparing the populations of stellar streams in cosmological simulations to observed Milky Way dwarf galaxy streams. In particular, we compare streams identified around Milky Way analogs in the FIRE-2 simulations to stellar streams observed by the Southern Stellar Stream Spectroscopic Survey (S5). For an accurate comparison between the stream populations, we produce mock Dark Energy Survey (DES) observations of the FIRE streams and estimate the detectability of their tidal tails and progenitors. The number and stellar mass distributions of detectable stellar streams is consistent between observations and simulations. However, there are discrepancies in the distributions of pericenters and apocenters, with the detectable FIRE streams, on average, forming at larger pericenters (out to > 110 kpc) and surviving only at larger apocenters (> 40 kpc) than those observed in the Milky Way. We find that the population of high-stellar mass dwarf galaxy streams in the Milky Way is incomplete. Interestingly, a large fraction of the FIRE streams would only be detected as satellites in DES-like observations, since their tidal tails are too low-surface brightness to be detectable. We thus predict a population of yet-undetected tidal tails around Milky Way satellites, as well as a population of fully undetected low surface brightness stellar streams, and estimate their detectability with the Rubin Observatory. We present a chemodynamical study of the Grus I ultra-faint dwarf galaxy (UFD) from medium-resolution ($R\sim11,000$) Magellan/IMACS spectra of its individual member stars. We identify eight confirmed members of Grus I, based on their low metallicities and coherent radial velocities, and four candidate members for which only velocities are derived. In contrast to previous work, we find that Grus I has a very low mean metallicity of $\langle$[Fe/H]$\rangle = -2.62 \pm 0.11$ dex, making it one of the most metal-poor UFDs. Grus I has a systemic radial velocity of $-143.5\pm1.2$ km s$^{-1}$ and a velocity dispersion of $\sigma_{\text{rv}} = 2.5^{+1.3}_{-0.8}$ km s$^{-1}$ which results in a dynamical mass of $M_{1/2} (r_h) = 8^{+12}_{-4} \times 10^5$ M$_{\odot}$ and a mass-to-light ratio of M/L$_V$ = $440^{+650}_{-250}$ M$_\odot$/L$_\odot$. Under the assumption of dynamical equilibrium, our analysis confirms that Grus I is a dark-matter-dominated UFD (M/L $> 80$ M$_\odot$/L$_\odot$). However, we do not resolve a metallicity dispersion ($\sigma_{\text{[Fe/H]}} < 0.44$ dex). Our results indicate that Grus I is a fairly typical UFD with parameters that agree with mass-metallicity and metallicity-luminosity trends for faint galaxies. This agreement suggests that Grus I has not lost an especially significant amount of mass from tidal encounters with the Milky Way, in line with its orbital parameters. Intriguingly, Grus I has among the lowest central density ($\rho_{1/2} \sim 3.5_{-2.1}^{+5.7} \times 10^7$ M$_\odot$ kpc$^{-3}$) of the UFDs that are not known to be tidally disrupting. Models of the formation and evolution of UFDs will need to explain the diversity of these central densities, in addition to any diversity in the outer regions of these relic galaxies., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures, 5 tables; published in ApJ

We combine Gaia EDR3 astrometry with accurate photometry and utilize a probabilistic mixture model to measure the systemic proper motion of 52 dwarf spheroidal (dSph) satellite galaxies of the Milky Way (MW). For the 46 dSphs with literature line-of-sight velocities we compute orbits in both a MW and a combined MW + Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) potential and identify Car II, Car III, Hor I, Hyi I, Phx II, and Ret II as likely LMC satellites. 40% of our dSph sample has a >25% change in pericenter and/or apocenter with the MW + LMC potential. For these orbits, we Monte Carlo sample over the observational uncertainties for each dSph and the uncertainties in the MW and LMC potentials. We predict that Ant II, Boo III, Cra II, Gru II, and Tuc III should be be tidally disrupting by comparing each dSph's average density relative to the MW density at its pericenter. dSphs with large ellipticity (CVn I, Her, Tuc V, UMa I, UMa II, UMi, Wil 1) show a preference for their orbital direction to align with their major axis even for dSphs with large pericenters. We compare the dSph radial orbital phase to subhalos in MW-like N-body simulations and infer that there is not an excess of satellites near their pericenter. With projections of future Gaia data releases, we find dSph orbital precision will be limited by uncertainties in the distance and/or MW potential rather than proper motion precision. It has recently been shown that the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) has a substantial effect on the Milky Way's stellar halo and stellar streams. Here, we explore how deformations of the Milky Way and LMC's dark matter haloes affect stellar streams, and whether these effects are observable. In particular, we focus on the Orphan-Chenab (OC) stream which passes particularly close to the LMC, and spans a large portion of the Milky Way's halo. We represent the Milky Way--LMC system using basis function expansions that capture their evolution in an $N$-body simulation. We present the properties of this system, such as the evolution of the densities and force fields of each galaxy. The OC stream is evolved in this time-dependent, deforming potential, and we investigate the effects of the various moments of the Milky Way and the LMC. We find that the simulated OC stream is strongly influenced by the deformations of both the Milky Way and the LMC, and that this effect is much larger than current observational errors. In particular, the Milky Way dipole has the biggest impact on the stream, followed by the evolution of the LMC's monopole, and the LMC's quadrupole. Detecting these effects would confirm a key prediction of collisionless, cold dark matter, and would be a powerful test of alternative dark matter and alternative gravity models., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures. We present an overview of future observational facilities that will significantly enhance our understanding of the fundamental nature of dark matter. These facilities span a range of observational techniques including optical/near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy, measurements of the cosmic microwave background, pulsar timing, 21-cm observations of neutral hydrogen at high redshift, and the measurement of gravitational waves. We combine the power of two stream-searching tools, STREAMFINDER and StarGO applied to the Gaia EDR3 data, to detect stellar debris belonging to the Cetus stream system that forms a complex, nearly polar structure around the Milky Way. In this work, we find the southern extensions of the northern Cetus stream as the Palca stream and a new southern stream, which overlap on the sky but have different distances. These two stream wraps extend over more than $\sim100\deg$ on the sky ($-60\deg<\delta<+40\deg$). The current N-body model of the system reproduces both wraps in the trailing arm. We also show that the Cetus system is confidently associated with the Triangulum/Pisces, Willka Yaku, and the recently discovered C-20 streams. The association with the ATLAS-Aliqa Uma stream is much weaker. All of these stellar debris are very metal-poor, comparable to the average metallicity of the southern Cetus stream with [Fe/H] = $-2.17\pm0.2$. The estimated stellar mass of the Cetus progenitor is at least $10^{5.6}\rm\,M_\odot$, compatible with Ursa Minor or Draco dwarf galaxies. The associated globular cluster with similar stellar mass, NGC 5824 very possibly was accreted in the same group infall. The multi-wrap Cetus stream is a perfect example of a dwarf galaxy that has undergone several periods of stripping, leaving behind debris at multiple locations in the halo. The full characterization of such systems is crucial to unravel the assembly history of the Milky Way and, as importantly, to provide nearby fossils to study ancient low-mass dwarf galaxies., Comment: accepted to ApJ. Recent advances in emerging atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenide semiconductors with strong light-matter interactions and tunable optical properties provide novel approaches for realizing new material functionalities. Coupling two-dimensional semiconductors with all-dielectric resonant nanostructures represents an especially attractive opportunity for manipulating optical properties in both the near-field and far-field regimes. Here, by integrating single-layer WSe2 and titanium oxide (TiO2) dielectric metasurfaces with toroidal resonances, we realized robust exciton emission enhancement over one order of magnitude at both room and low temperatures. Furthermore, we could control exciton dynamics and annihilation by using temperature to tailor the spectral overlap of excitonic and toroidal resonances, allowing us to selectively enhance the Purcell effect. Our results provide rich physical insight into the strong light-matter interactions in single-layer TMDs coupled with toroidal dielectric metasurfaces, with important implications for optoelectronics and photonics applications.

We report the kinematic, orbital, and chemical properties of 12 stellar streams with no evident progenitors, using line-of-sight velocities and metallicities from the Southern Stellar Stream Spectroscopic Survey ($S^5$), proper motions from $Gaia$ EDR3, and distances derived from distance tracers or the literature. This data set provides the largest homogeneously analyzed set of streams with full 6D kinematics and metallicities. All streams have heliocentric distances between ${\sim}10-50$ kpc. The velocity and metallicity dispersions show that half of the stream progenitors were disrupted dwarf galaxies (DGs), while the other half originated from disrupted globular clusters (GCs), hereafter referred to as DG and GC streams. Based on the mean metallicities of the streams and the mass-metallicity relation, the luminosities of the progenitors of the DG streams range between Carina and Ursa Major I ($-9.5\lesssim M_V\lesssim-5.5$). Four of the six GC streams have mean metallicities of [Fe/H]$< -2$, more metal-poor than typical Milky Way (MW) GCs at similar distances. Interestingly, the 300S and Jet GC streams are the only streams on retrograde orbits in our dozen stream sample. Finally, we compare the orbital properties of the streams with known DGs and GCs in the MW, finding several possible associations. Some streams appear to have been accreted with the recently discovered Gaia-Enceladus-Sausage system, and others suggest that GCs were formed in and accreted together with the progenitors of DG streams whose stellar masses are similar to Draco to Carina ($\sim10^5-10^6M_\odot$)., Comment: 24 pages, 8 Figures, 2 Tables. The Phoenix stellar stream has a low intrinsic dispersion in velocity and metallicity that implies the progenitor was probably a low mass globular cluster. In this work we use Magellan/MIKE high-dispersion spectroscopy of eight Phoenix stream red giants to confirm this scenario. In particular, we find negligible intrinsic scatter in metallicity ($\sigma(\mathrm{[Fe~II/H]}) = 0.04^{+0.11}_{-0.03}$) and a large peak-to-peak range in [Na/Fe] and [Al/Fe] abundance ratios, consistent with the light element abundance patterns seen in the most metal-poor globular clusters. However, unlike any other globular cluster, we also find an intrinsic spread in [Sr II/Fe] spanning $\sim$1 dex, while [Ba II/Fe] shows nearly no intrinsic spread ($\sigma(\mathrm{[Ba~II/H]}) = {0.03}^{+0.10}_{-0.02}$). This abundance signature is best interpreted as slow neutron capture element production from a massive fast-rotating metal-poor star ($15-20 \mathrm{M}_\odot$, $v_\mathrm{ini}/v_\mathrm{crit} = 0.4$, $[\mathrm{Fe/H}] = -3.8$). The low inferred cluster mass suggests the system would have been unable to retain supernovae ejecta, implying that any massive fast-rotating metal-poor star that enriched the interstellar medium must have formed and evolved before the globular cluster formed. Neutron capture element production from asymptotic giant branch stars or magneto-rotational instabilities in core-collapse supernovae provide poor fits to the observations. We also report one Phoenix stream star to be a lithium-rich giant ($A(\mathrm{Li}) = 3.1 \pm 0.1$). Stellar streams are excellent probes of the underlying gravitational potential in which they evolve. In this work, we fit dynamical models to five streams in the Southern Galactic hemisphere, combining observations from the Southern Stellar Stream Spectroscopic Survey (${S}^5$), Gaia EDR3, and the Dark Energy Survey (DES), to measure the mass of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). With an ensemble of streams, we find a mass of the LMC ranging from 14 to $19 \times 10^{10}\ \mathrm{M}_{\odot}$, probed over a range of closest approach times and distances. With the most constraining stream (Orphan-Chenab), we measure an LMC mass of $18.8^{+ 3.5}_{- 4.0} \times 10^{10}\ \mathrm{M}_{\odot}$, probed at a closest approach time of 310 Myr and a closest approach distance of 25.4 kpc. This mass is compatible with previous measurements, showing that a consistent picture is emerging of the LMC's influence on structures in the Milky Way. Using this sample of streams, we find that the LMC's effect depends on the relative orientation of the stream and LMC at their point of closest approach. To better understand this, we present a simple model based on the impulse approximation and we show that the LMC's effect depends both on the magnitude of the velocity kick imparted to the stream and the direction of this kick., Comment: 23 pages, 10 figures, submitted to ApJ

Jovian planet formation has been shown to be strongly correlated with host star metallicity, which is thought to be a proxy for disk solids. Observationally, previous works have indicated that jovian planets preferentially form around stars with solar and super solar metallicities. Given these findings, it is challenging to form planets within metal-poor environments, particularly for hot Jupiters that are thought to form via metallicity-dependent core accretion. Although previous studies have conducted planet searches for hot Jupiters around metal-poor stars, they have been limited due to small sample sizes, which are a result of a lack of high-quality data making hot Jupiter occurrence within the metal-poor regime difficult to constrain until now. We use a large sample of halo stars observed by TESS to constrain the upper limit of hot Jupiter occurrence within the metal-poor regime (-2.0 $\leq$ [Fe/H] $\leq$ -0.6). Placing the most stringent upper limit on hot Jupiter occurrence, we find the mean 1-$\sigma$ upper limit to be 0.18 $\%$ for radii 0.8 -2 R$_{\rm{Jupiter}}$ and periods $0.5- 10$ days. This result is consistent with previous predictions indicating that there exists a certain metallicity below which no planets can form., Comment: Accepted, ApJ. We present new spectroscopic observations of the diffuse Milky Way satellite galaxies Antlia 2 and Crater 2, taken as part of the Southern Stellar Stream Spectroscopic Survey (S5). The new observations approximately double the number of confirmed member stars in each galaxy and more than double the spatial extent of spectroscopic observations in Antlia 2. A full kinematic analysis, including Gaia EDR3 proper motions, detects a clear velocity gradient in Antlia 2 and a tentative velocity gradient in Crater 2. The velocity gradient magnitudes and directions are consistent with particle stream simulations of tidal disruption. Furthermore, the orbit and kinematics of Antlia 2 require a model that includes the reflex motion of the Milky Way induced by the Large Magellanic Cloud. We also find that Antlia 2's metallicity was previously overestimated, so it lies on the empirical luminosity-metallicity relation and is likely only now experiencing substantial stellar mass loss. Current dynamical models of Antlia 2 require it to have lost over 90% of its stars to tides, in tension with the low stellar mass loss implied by the updated metallicity. We characterize the response of a novel 250 $\mu$m thick, fully-depleted Skipper Charged-Coupled Device (CCD) to visible/near-infrared light with a focus on potential applications for astronomical observations. We achieve stable, single-electron resolution with readout noise $\sigma \sim 0.18$ e$^{-}$ rms/pix from 400 non-destructive measurements of the charge in each pixel. We verify that the gain derived from photon transfer curve measurements agrees with the gain calculated from the quantized charge of individual electrons to within < 1%. We also perform relative quantum efficiency measurements and demonstrate high relative quantum efficiency at optical/near-infrared wavelengths, as is expected for a thick, fully depleted detector. Finally, we demonstrate the ability to perform multiple non-destructive measurements and achieve sub-electron readout noise over configurable subregions of the detector. We perform consistent reductions and measurements for three ultra-faint dwarf galaxies (UFDs): Bo\"otes I, Leo IV and Leo V. Using the public archival data from the GIRAFFE spectrograph on the Very Large Telescope (VLT), we locate new members and provide refined measurements of physical parameters for these dwarf galaxies. We identify nine new Leo IV members and four new Leo V members, and perform a comparative analysis of previously discovered members. Additionally, we identify one new binary star in both Leo IV and Leo V. After removing binary stars, we recalculate the velocity dispersions of Bo\"otes I and Leo IV to be 5.1$^{+0.7}_{-0.8}$ and 3.4$^{+1.3}_{-0.9}$ km s$^{-1}$, respectively; We do not resolve the Leo V velocity dispersion. We identify a weak velocity gradient in Leo V that is $\sim$4$\times$ smaller than the previously calculated gradient and that has a corresponding position angle which differs from the literature value by $\sim$120 deg. Combining the VLT data with previous literature, we re-analyze the Bo\"otes I metallicity distribution function and find that a model including infall of pristine gas while Bo\"otes I was forming stars best fits the data. Our analysis of Leo IV, Leo V and other UFDs will enhance our understanding of these enigmatic stellar populations and contribute to future dark matter studies. This is the first in a series of papers examining thirteen UDFs observed with VLT/GIRAFFE between 2009 and 2017. We present deep Hubble Space Telescope (HST) photometry of the ultra-faint dwarf galaxy Eridanus II (Eri II). Eri II, which has an absolute magnitude of M_V = -7.1, is located at a distance of 339 kpc, just beyond the virial radius of the Milky Way. We determine the star formation history of Eri II and measure the structure of the galaxy and its star cluster. We find that a star formation history consisting of two bursts, constrained to match the spectroscopic metallicity distribution of the galaxy, accurately describes the Eri II stellar population. The best-fit model implies a rapid truncation of star formation at early times, with >80% of the stellar mass in place before z~6. A small fraction of the stars could be as young as 8 Gyr, but this population is not statistically significant; Monte Carlo simulations recover a component younger than 9 Gyr only 15% of the time, where they represent an average of 7 +/- 4% of the population. These results are consistent with theoretical expectations for quenching by reionization. The HST depth and angular resolution enable us to show that Eri II's cluster is offset from the center of the galaxy by a projected distance of 23 +/- 3 pc. This offset could be an indication of a small (~50-75 pc) dark matter core in Eri II. Moreover, we demonstrate that the cluster has a high ellipticity of 0.31 +0.05/-0.06 and is aligned with the orientation of Eri II within 3 +/- 6 degrees, likely due to tides. We present high-resolution Magellan/MIKE spectroscopy of 42 red giant stars in seven stellar streams confirmed by the Southern Stellar Stream Spectroscopic Survey (S5): ATLAS, Aliqa Uma, Chenab, Elqui, Indus, Jhelum, and Phoenix. Abundances of 30 elements have been derived from over 10,000 individual line measurements or upper limits using photometric stellar parameters and a standard LTE analysis. This is currently the most extensive set of element abundances for stars in stellar streams. Three streams (ATLAS, Aliqa Uma, and Phoenix) are disrupted metal-poor globular clusters, although only weak evidence is seen for the light element anticorrelations commonly observed in globular clusters. Four streams (Chenab, Elqui, Indus, and Jhelum) are disrupted dwarf galaxies, and their stars display abundance signatures that suggest progenitors with stellar masses ranging from $10^6-10^7 M_\odot$. Extensive description is provided for the analysis methods, including the derivation of a new method for including the effect of stellar parameter correlations on each star's abundance and uncertainty. Globular clusters are some of the oldest bound stellar structures observed in the Universe. They are ubiquitous in large galaxies and are believed to trace intense star formation events and the hierarchical build-up of structure. Observations of globular clusters in the Milky Way, and a wide variety of other galaxies, have found evidence for a `metallicity floor', whereby no globular clusters are found with chemical (`metal') abundances below approximately 0.3 to 0.4 per cent of that of the Sun. The existence of this metallicity floor may reflect a minimum mass and a maximum redshift for surviving globular clusters to form, both critical components for understanding the build-up of mass in the universe. Here we report measurements from the Southern Stellar Streams Spectroscopic Survey of the spatially thin, dynamically cold Phoenix stellar stream in the halo of the Milky Way. The properties of the Phoenix stream are consistent with it being the tidally disrupted remains of a globular cluster. However, its metal abundance ([Fe/H] = -2.7) is substantially below that of the empirical metallicity floor. The Phoenix stream thus represents the debris of the most metal-poor globular cluster discovered so far, and its progenitor is distinct from the present-day globular cluster population in the local Universe. We present the first spectroscopic measurements of the ATLAS and Aliqa Uma streams from the Southern Stellar Stream Spectroscopic Survey ($S^5$), in combination with the photometric data from the Dark Energy Survey and astrometric data from $Gaia$. From the coherence of spectroscopic members in radial velocity and proper motion, we find out that these two systems are extremely likely to be one stream with discontinuity in morphology and density on the sky (the "kink" feature). We refer to this entire stream as the ATLAS-Aliqa Uma stream, or the AAU stream. We perform a comprehensive exploration of the effect of baryonic substructures and find that only an encounter with the Sagittarius dwarf $\sim 0.5$ Gyr ago can create a feature similar to the observed "kink". In addition, we also identify two gaps in the ATLAS component associated with the broadening in the stream width (the "broadening" feature). These gaps have likely been created by small mass perturbers, such as dark matter halos, as the AAU stream is the most distant cold stream known with severe variations in both the stream surface density and the stream track on the sky. With the stream track, stream distance and kinematic information, we determine the orbit of the AAU stream and find that it has been affected by the Large Magellanic Cloud, resulting in a misalignment between the proper motion and stream track. The hyper-velocity star S5-HVS1, ejected 5 Myr ago from the Galactic Center at 1800 km/s, was most likely produced by tidal break-up of a tight binary by the supermassive black hole SgrA*. Taking a Monte Carlo approach, we show that the former companion of S5-HVS1 was likely a main-sequence star between 1.2 and 6 solar masses and was captured into a highly eccentric orbit with pericenter distance in the range 1-10 AU and semimajor axis about $10^3$ AU. We then explore the fate of the captured star. We find that the heat deposited by tidally excited stellar oscillation modes leads to runaway disruption if the pericenter distance is smaller than about 3 AU. Over the past 5 Myr, its angular momentum has been significantly modified by orbital relaxation, which may stochastically drive the pericenter inwards below 3 AU and cause tidal disruption. We find an overall survival probability in the range 5% to 50%, depending on the local relaxation time in the close environment of the captured star, and the initial pericenter at capture. The pericenter distance of the surviving star has migrated to 10-100 AU, making it potentially the most extreme member of the S-star cluster. From the ejection rate of S5-HVS1-like stars, we estimate that there may currently be a few stars in such highly eccentric orbits. They should be detectable (typically Ks < 18.5 mag) by the GRAVITY instrument and by future Extremely Large Telescopes and hence provide an extraordinary probe of the spin of SgrA*., Comment: MNRAS accepted after minor revision

A large number of new members ($\sim$150) of the Cetus Stream (CS) were identified from their clustering features in dynamical space using 6D kinematic data by combining LAMOST DR5 and Gaia DR2 surveys. They map a diffuse structure that extends over at least 100 degrees in the northern and southern Galactic hemispheres, at heliocentric distances between 20 to 50 kpc. Taking advantage of this expanded dataset, we model the stream with a suite of tailored N-body simulations. Our findings exclude the possibility that the NGC 5824 globular cluster is the core of the progenitor of the stream, as postulated by previous studies. Our best models, which successfully reproduce the features of the CS indicate that the progenitor is likely a dwarf galaxy of $\sim$ 2$\times$10$^9$M$_{\odot}$, with a diffuse disc morphology. The merger occured $\sim$ 5 Gyr ago and since then it has experienced approximately eight apo-center passages. Our results suggest that NGC 5824 was either a globular cluster situated off-centre in the dwarf progenitor or, alternatively, it was the nuclear star cluster of another dwarf galaxy that has very similar orbit as the progenitor of the CS. In both scenarios, the progenitor systems would leave streams around NGC 5824, but with distinct distance distributions. To discriminate between these scenarios, the detection and accurate distance measurements of the predicted stream around the GC are crucial, which will be possible in the upcoming LSST era. Our simulations also predict that part of the Southern Cetus stream is very likely the newly discovered Palca stream, and possibly related to another, more diffuse Southern substructure, the Eridanus-Pheonix overdensity., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ
