2. Higher Education Curriculum Design for Sustainable Development: Towards a Transformative Approach
- Author

- Abstract
Purpose: Education is widely recognized as a key domain for the promotion of the sustainable development goals (SDGs), prompting an increased focus on sustainable development in foreign language education. Despite increased attention, guidelines about SDGs are often primarily policy-based without concrete guidance, and the integration of education for sustainable development (ESD) within higher education curricula has been slow. This paper aims to mitigate this gap by providing an outline for the curriculum development for three elective English courses integrating SDG themes. Design/methodology/approach: The paper begins by introducing the SDGs, ESD and its application to language education. From there, this paper outlines three content and language integrated learning courses that integrate global issues into their curriculum. Finally, there is a discussion and consideration of various factors to consider when implementing global issues into an English language classroom. Findings: Following practical examples of how to integrate global issues into an English language classroom, considerations such as socio-cultural context, teaching context and the expertise of the instructor are discussed. Originality/value: This paper covers a variety of social topics related to sustainable development in addition to the often addressed environmental topics. Many guidelines about integrating SDGs into education are policy-based without concrete guidance, so this paper aims to provide practical examples and considerations.

In this reflective paper I examine one of my first experiences conducting an advising session as part of a course on advising in language learning. Using a narrative approach, I put the session in context, give a brief summary of it, then focus on a specific interesting moment from the session to examine in detail. In particular I reflect on the importance I placed on feeling genuine while trying to learn and practice advising strategies and how this was a significant worry for me throughout the advising course. Lastly, I touch on the most noteworthy lesson I learned, that attending the conversation is the most important part of an advising session, and how I plan to apply this lesson to future interactions. This paper may benefit those who are new to language learning advising or who have an interest in how new advisors navigate the process.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The “addictively readable” (The Washington Post) inside story of the British royal family's battle to overcome the dramas of the Diana years—only to confront new, twenty-first-century crises “Frothy and forthright, a kind of Keeping Up with the Windsors with sprinkles of Keats.”—The New York Times (Notable Book of the Year)ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: The Washington Post, Elle, Town & Country“Never again” became Queen Elizabeth II's mantra shortly after Princess Diana's tragic death. More specifically, there could never be “another Diana”—a member of the family whose global popularity upstaged, outshone, and posed an existential threat to the British monarchy.Picking up where Tina Brown's masterful The Diana Chronicles left off, The Palace Papers reveals how the royal family reinvented itself after the traumatic years when Diana's blazing celebrity ripped through the House of Windsor like a comet.Brown takes readers on a tour de force journey through the scandals, love affairs, power plays, and betrayals that have buffeted the monarchy over the last twenty-five years. We see the Queen's stoic resolve after the passing of Princess Margaret, the Queen Mother, and Prince Philip, her partner for seven decades, and how she triumphs in her Jubilee years even as family troubles rage around her. Brown explores Prince Charles's determination to make Camilla Parker Bowles his wife, the tension between William and Harry on “different paths,” the ascendance of Kate Middleton, the downfall of Prince Andrew, and Harry and Meghan's stunning decision to step back as senior royals. Despite the fragile monarchy's best efforts, “never again” seems fast approaching.Tina Brown has been observing and chronicling the British monarchy for three decades, and her sweeping account is full of powerful revelations, newly reported details, and searing insight gleaned from remarkable access to royal insiders. Stylish, witty, and erudite, The Palace Papers will irrevocably change how the world perceives and understands the royal family.

- Abstract
A historian examines the developments in women's lives over a period from 1850 to 1950 in the famous southeastern England seaside town. The southeast coastal town of Eastbourne is probably best known today as a popular holiday resort frequented by the retired generation. It has long, golden beaches and a gentile pace of life and, from that point of view, little has really changed from the mid-1850s to today. However, for the women of the town and their advancements and achievements, a significant period was between 1850 and 1950, when changes in medicine, education, family life, and the right to vote played an important part in their lives. The First and Second World Wars also brought about their own changes and challenges. A History of Women's Lives in Eastbourne delves deep into these historical subjects and more.

OBJECTIVE To compare the effectiveness of three delivery modalities of Decision-making Education for Choices In Diabetes Everyday (DECIDE), a nine-module, literacy-adapted diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD) education and problem-solving training, compared with an enhanced usual care (UC), on clinical and behavioral outcomes among urban African Americans with type 2 diabetes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS Eligible participants (n = 182) had a suboptimal CVD risk factor profile (A1C, blood pressure, and/or lipids). Participants were randomized to DECIDE Self-Study (n = 46), DECIDE Individual (n = 45), DECIDE Group (n = 46), or Enhanced UC (n = 45). Intervention duration was 18–20 weeks. Outcomes were A1C, blood pressure, lipids, problem-solving, disease knowledge, and self-care activities, all measured at baseline, 1 week, and 6 months after completion of the intervention. RESULTS DECIDE modalities and Enhanced UC did not significantly differ in clinical outcomes at 6 months postintervention. In participants with A1C ≥7.5% (58 mmol/mol) at baseline, A1C declined in each DECIDE modality at 1 week postintervention (P < 0.05) and only in Self-Study at 6 months postintervention (b = −0.24, P < 0.05). There was significant reduction in systolic blood pressure in Self-Study (b = −4.04) and Group (b = −3.59) at 6 months postintervention. Self-Study, Individual, and Enhanced UC had significant declines in LDL and Self-Study had an increase in HDL (b = 1.76, P < 0.05) at 6 months postintervention. Self-Study and Individual had a higher increase in knowledge than Enhanced UC (P < 0.05), and all arms improved in problem-solving (P < 0.01) at 6 months postintervention. CONCLUSIONS DECIDE modalities showed benefits after intervention. Self-Study demonstrated robust improvements across clinical and behavioral outcomes, suggesting program suitability for broader dissemination to populations with similar educational and literacy levels.

A collaborative research programme between project partners Microsemi, the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) and Gwent Electronic Materials (GEM), has successfully developed innovative materials specifically designed to offer an alternative for high Pb or Au content materials to increase the operating temperature of electronic assemblies. Currently, for electronic assemblies to operate at high temperature, they must use a high lead solder or a very expensive gold based solder to withstand these temperatures. The ELCOSINT project has developed an inexpensive lead-free alternative for joining high temperature electronics suitable for operating at temperatures above 250°C utilising standard surface mount assembly processes. This paper summarises the work undertaken by the authors to develop and better understand this new family of electrical interconnection materials. The project brought together a materials supplier (GEM – Gwent Electronic Materials), an end-user (MSL - Microsemi) and an technology research organisation (NPL – National Physical Laboratory) to jointly develop, test and implement in production, the solution based on silver-loaded silicone materials. This paper focuses on the testing and materials evaluation undertaken at NPL to determine the long term performance of these alternative materials including high temperature ageing up to 300°C, thermal cycling and damp heat testing. Details of the shear strength and electrical performance of interconnects between the substrates and components during the test regimes are given. The manufacturing process is outlined including details of the test vehicles utilised. The processing temperature for the conductive adhesive is 250°C which offers additional advantages in potential improvements in component and substrate reliability compared to soldered solutions which would typically be processed at temperatures above 300°C.

This article describes a community-based mentoring program, Partners in Nursing (PIN), which was developed as a collaborative effort to address the nursing workforce shortage. While the primary goal was to increase retention rates of new nurse graduates, the program also produced secondary benefits of professional development and outreach opportunities. Furthermore, through the creation of PIN, local resources were identified to support new graduates and cultivate leadership potential. While the program was deemed effective, continued research is needed to quantify the benefits of such programs so that similar initiatives can be successfully replicated.

- Abstract
Sie gründete The Daily Beast und den Women of the World-Gipfel. Tina Brown lebt in New York.

We compared use of preventive, cancer screening, and diabetic monitoring services among 17,411 people who were continuously enrolled in a consumer-directed health plan (CDHP) for three years with a matched group of 128,444 people who were enrolled in a preferred provider organization (PPO). In the CDHPs, preventive and screening services were free. Levels and trends in use were similar between the two groups over the three years of follow-up. These results support varying the degree of cost sharing for services depending on the effect of the service on future health status and costs.

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Years after her death, Princess Diana remains a mystery. This'insanely readable and improbably profound'biography (Chicago Tribune) reveals the truth as only famed journalist Tina Brown could tell it.'The best book on Diana.'—The New YorkerWas she “the people's princess,” who electrified the world with her beauty and humanitarian missions? Or was she manipulative and media-savvy and nearly brought down the monarchy? Tina Brown, former Editor-in-Chief of Tatler, England's glossiest gossip magazine; Vanity Fair; and The New Yorker gives us the answers. Tina knew Diana personally and has far-reaching insight into the royals and the Queen herself. In The Diana Chronicles, you will meet a formidable female cast and understand as never before the society that shaped them: Diana's sexually charged mother, her scheming grandmother, the stepmother she hated but finally came to terms with, and bad-girl Fergie, her sister-in-law, who concealed wounds of her own. Most formidable of them all was her mother-in-law, the Queen, whose admiration Diana sought till the day she died. Add Camilla Parker-Bowles, the ultimate'other woman'into this combustible mix, and it's no wonder that Diana broke out of her royal cage into celebrity culture, where she found her own power and used it to devastating effect.
