This article reviews and summarizes work recently performed in this laboratory on the synthesis of advanced transparent conducting oxide nanopowders by the use of plasma. The nanopowders thus synthesized include indium tin oxide (ITO), zinc oxide (ZnO) and tin-doped zinc oxide (TZO), aluminum-doped zinc oxide (AZO), and indium-doped zinc oxide (IZO). These oxides have excellent transparent conducting properties, among other useful characteristics. ZnO and TZO also has photocatalytic properties. The synthesis of these materials started with the selection of the suitable precursors, which were injected into a non-transferred thermal plasma and vaporized followed by vapor-phase reactions to form nanosized oxide particles. The products were analyzed by the use of various advanced instrumental analysis techniques, and their useful properties were tested by different appropriate methods. The thermal plasma process showed a considerable potential as an efficient technique for synthesizing oxide nanopowders. This process is also suitable for large scale production of nano-sized powders owing to the availability of high temperatures for volatilizing reactants rapidly, followed by vapor phase reactions and rapid quenching to yield nano-sized powder.

Background: Therapeutic selectivity and drug resistance are critical issues in cancer therapy. Currently, zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) hold considerable promise to tackle this problem due to their tunable physicochemical properties. This work was designed to prepare SnO 2 -doped ZnO NPs/reduced graphene oxide nanocomposites (SnO 2 -ZnO/rGO NCs) with enhanced anticancer activity and better biocompatibility than those of pure ZnO NPs., Materials and Methods: Pure ZnO NPs, SnO 2 -doped ZnO (SnO 2 -ZnO) NPs, and SnO 2 -ZnO/rGO NCs were prepared via a facile hydrothermal method. Prepared samples were characterized by field emission transmission electron microscopy (FETEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS) spectrometer, and dynamic light scattering (DLS) techniques. Selectivity and anticancer activity of prepared samples were assessed in human breast cancer (MCF-7) and human normal breast epithelial (MCF10A) cells. Possible mechanisms of anticancer activity of prepared samples were explored through oxidative stress pathway., Results: XRD spectra of SnO 2 -ZnO/rGO NCs confirmed the formation of single-phase of hexagonal wurtzite ZnO. High resolution TEM and SEM mapping showed homogenous distribution of SnO 2 and rGO in ZnO NPs with high quality lattice fringes without any distortion. Band gap energy of SnO 2 -ZnO/rGO NCs was lower compared to SnO 2 -ZnO NPs and pure ZnO NPs. The SnO 2 -ZnO/rGO NCs exhibited significantly higher anticancer activity against MCF-7 cancer cells than those of SnO 2 -ZnO NPs and ZnO NPs. The SnO 2 -ZnO/rGO NCs induced apoptotic response through the upregulation of caspase-3 gene and depletion of mitochondrial membrane potential. Mechanistic study indicated that SnO 2 -ZnO/rGO NCs kill cancer cells through oxidative stress pathway. Moreover, biocompatibility of SnO 2 -ZnO/rGO NCs was also higher against normal breast epithelial (MCF10A cells) in comparison to SnO 2 -ZnO NPs and ZnO NPs., Conclusion: SnO 2 -ZnO/rGO NCs showed enhanced anticancer activity and better biocompatibility than SnO 2 -ZnO NPs and pure ZnO NPs. This work suggested a new approach to improve the selectivity and anticancer activity of ZnO NPs. Photothermal therapy (PTT) is among the popular approach for treating solid tumours. The rapid killing of cancer cells under the influence of infrared radiation by a rapid increase in the temperature of the remote area now demands external agents with high photothermal transduction efficiency (PTE). Despite their improved PTE, black nanomaterials such as black phosphorus and titanium oxide are unable to meet the challenges in the physiological conditions. To address this major concern, we have developed black tin oxide (bSnO) with enhanced capabilities to respond in the physiological milieu. To make the synthesis cost-effective and eco-friendly, we have used electrochemical oxidation at 5 V and 100 mA to achieve ∼15 nm nanoparticle of bSnO. The as-synthesized bSnO exhibited high NIR absorption as well as high photothermal transduction efficiency. To circumvent the low aqueous solubility and photostability, bSnO was functionalized with polyethyleneimine (PEI). Upon exposure to 808 nm laser for ∼8-10 min, the temperature of the bSnO@PEI solution reached ∼58.5 °C. PTE of bSnO@PEI was calculated to be 51.2%. Owing to its high biological compatibility, tin offers relatively better stability when exposed to cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. The present work demonstrates the synthesis, characterization and biological activities of different concentrations of tin doped indium oxide nanoparticles (Sn doped In 2 O 3 NPs), i.e., (Sn/In = 5%, 10% and 15%). We have synthesized different size (38.11 nm, 18.46 nm and 10.21 nm) of Sn doped In 2 O 3 NPs. by using an ultra-sonication process. The Sn doped In 2 O 3 NPs were characterized by by x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) which confirmed the successful doping of tin (Sn) with Indium oxide (In 2 O 3 ). Anticandidal activity was performed by standard agar dilution method using Candida albicans for the study. The minimum inhibitory/fungicidal concentration (MIC/MFC) values recorded were, 8 & >8 mg/ml for pure In 2 O 3 NPs, 4 & 8 mg/ml for 5%, 2 & 8 mg/ml for 10%, whereas 1 & >4 mg/ml for 15% Sn doped In 2 O 3 NPs, respectively. The topographical alteration caused by Sn doped In 2 O 3 NPs on Candida cells, was clearly observed by SEM examination. A significant enhancement in anticandidal activity was seen, when Candida cells were exposed to (Sn/In = 5%, 10% and 15%). Moreover, we have also evaluated the impact of Sn-In 2 O 3 NPs on human colorectal carcinoma cells (HCT-116). The results demonstrated that Sn-In 2 O 3 NPs (Sn/In = 5%, 10% and 15%), caused dose dependent decrease in the cancer cell viability as the low dosage (2.0 mg/mL) showed 62.11% cell viability, while 4.0, 8.0, 16.0, 32.0 mg/mL dosages showed 20.45%, 18.25%, 16.58%, and 15.58% cell viability. In addition, the treatment of Sn-In 2 O 3 NPs also showed significant cellular and anatomical changes in cancer cells as examined by microscopes. We have also examined the impact of Sn-In 2 O 3 NPs (5%, 10%, 15%) on normal cells (HEK-293) and the results demonstrate that Sn-In 2 O 3 NPs did not reduce the cell viability of normal cells.

In this work, we report a sensitive and selective electrochemical sensor for the detection of dopamine (DA) neurotransmitter based on VS 2 -SnS 2 /f-MWCNT hybrids. Herein, the binary metal sulfide (VS 2 -SnS 2 ) was synthesized via single step hydrothermal route and hybrids with f-MWCNT via the ultrasonication process. The as-prepared VS 2 -SnS 2 /f-MWCNT hybrids were characterized through the FESEM, EDX and elemental mapping, TEM, XPS, Raman and XRD techniques. The electrochemical performance and catalytic activity of the modified electrodes were probed using electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). Interestingly, DPV results exhibits an appreciable linear range from 0.025 to 1017 μM and LOD of 0.008 μM. The selectivity study was performed to prove the high selectivity of the VS 2 -SnS 2 /f-MWCNT hybrids modified electrode. Aluminum-doped tin oxide (SnO 2:Al) thin films were produced by an ultrasonic spray pyrolysis method. The effect of aluminum doping on structural, optical, and electrical properties of tin oxide thin films synthesized at 420 ∘C was investigated. Al doping induced a change in the morphology of tin oxide films and yielded films with smaller grain size. SnO 2 thin films undergo a structural reordering and have a texture transition from (301) to (101), and then to (002) preferred cristallographic orientation upon Al doping. The lattice parameters ( a and c ) decreases with Al doping, following in a first approximation Vegard's law. The optical transmission does not change in the visible region with an average transmittance value of 72-81%. Conversely, in the near infrared (NIR) region, the plasmon frequency shifts towards the IR region upon increasing Al concentration in the grown films. Nominally undoped SnO 2 have a conductivity of ∼1120 S/cm, which is at least two orders of magnitude larger than what is reported in literature. This higher conductivity is attributed to the Cl- ions in the SnCl 4.5(H 2 O) precursor, which would act as donor dopants. The introduction of Al into the SnO 2 lattice showed a decrease of the electrical conductivity of SnO 2 due to compensating hole generation. These findings will be useful for further studied tackling the tailoring of the properties of highly demanded fluorine doped tin oxide (FTO) films.

A method for producing simple and efficient thermally-activated delayed fluorescence organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) based on guest-host or exciplex donor-acceptor emitters is presented. With a step-by-step procedure, readers will be able to repeat and produce OLED devices based on simple organic emitters. A patterning procedure allowing the creation of personalized indium tin oxide (ITO) shape is shown. This is followed by the evaporation of all layers, encapsulation and characterization of each individual device. The end goal is to present a procedure that will give the opportunity to repeat the information presented in cited publication but also using different compounds and structures in order to prepare efficient OLEDs.

Herein, we designed an electrochemiluminescence (ECL) biosensor with SnS 2 quantum dots (SnS 2 QDs) as novel emitters for the ultrasensitive assay of cytomegalovirus pp65 antibody (anti-CMV pp65) via smart circular peptide-DNA nanomachine amplification. First, the novel ECL biosensing platform was constructed by self-assembly of water-soluble, nontoxic, and earth-abundant SnS 2 QDs on the 3D hierarchical silver nanoflowers (Ag NFs) surface, where the Ag NFs, as coreaction accelerator in the ECL ternary (SnS 2 QDs/S 2 O 8 2- /Ag NFs) system, could efficiently boost the ECL intensity of SnS 2 QDs. Furthermore, we designed a specific nucleic acid sequence labeled antigenic peptide to act as multifunctionalized capture probe (CP), which could specifically recognize the target antibody assisting with two auxiliary DNA strands via the proximity hybridization of DNA motifs to form a smart circular peptide-DNA nanomachine. Then, with the aid of nuclease, the resultant circular peptide-DNA nanomachine could initiate the subsequent cascade recycling amplification to output massive DNA products as mimic target (MT). As a result, the proposed ECL biosensor for anti-CMV pp65 detection exhibited high sensitivity with a wide linear range from 1 fM to 100 nM and a low detection limit (0.33 fM). Importantly, this work not only first utilized SnS 2 QDs as promising ECL emitters for biosensing platform construction but also opened an efficient way for highly sensitive and selective detection of antibody in disease diagnosis and clinical analysis.

Background: Biopharmaceutics classification system class II drugs have low solubility, which limits their extent and speed of absorption after oral administration. Over the years, mesoporous materials have been widely used to increase the dissolution rate and oral relative bioavailability of poorly water-soluble drugs., Objectives: In order to improve the dissolution rate and increase oral relative bioavailability of the poorly water-soluble drugs, a tin oxide carrier (MSn) with a mesoporous structure was successfully synthesized., Methods: In this study, MSn was synthesized using mesoporous silica material (SBA-15) as the template. Fenofibrate (FNB) was adsorbed into the channels of MSn by an adsorption method. Characterizations of the pure FNB, MSn, physical mixture of the drug and MSn (PM; 1:1) and FNB-loaded MSn (FNB-MSn) samples were carried out by the scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), N 2 adsorption/desorption, powder X-ray diffractometer (PXRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Cytotoxicity assay (MTT) was used to evaluate the cytotoxicity of MSn. In vitro dissolution studies were performed to investigate the dissolution rate of FNB-MSn. In vivo pharmacokinetic studies were used to investigate the changes of plasma drug concentrations of FNB-MSn tablets and commercial FNB tablets in rabbits., Results: Detailed characterization showed that FNB in the channels of MSn was present in an amorphous state. The in vitro release tests demonstrated that MSn with a good biocompatibility could effectively enhance the dissolution rate of FNB. In the present study, microwave heating method was established for the biosynthesis of SnO 2 Quantum dots (QDs) using Parkia speciosa Hassk pods extract. The as-synthesized quantum dots have been characterized by various techniques such as UV, XRD, EDX, TEM, HRTEM, SAED and FTIR spectroscopy. The biosynthesized SnO 2 QDs was employed for the first time as an efficient photocatalyst for the degradation of a food dye, acid yellow 23 dye from aqueous phase under the UV 254 light. Various parameters, such as the effect of catalyst dose, the initial concentration of acid yellow 23 dye (AY23), pH of the solution and irradiation time on the photodegradation process are also studied for efficient and better use of the synthesized SnO 2 QDs as a catalyst. The biosynthesized SnO 2 QDs exhibited excellent photocatalytic performances with degradation efficiency 98% on the degradation of an aqueous solution of AY23 of concentration 5 mg/L with a catalyst dose of 20 mg under UV 254 light within 24 min. The synthesized SnO 2 QDs can be reused up to 5 cycles of photodegradation experiment without losing its stability and efficiency. The biosynthesized SnO 2 QDs also shows a fair activity in the scavenging of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl free radical with the IC 50 value of 312.6 ± 0.025 μg/mL., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. Reported is the stereospecific cross-coupling of anomeric stannanes with symmetrical diselenides, resulting in the synthesis of selenoglycosides with exclusive anomeric control. The reaction proceeds without the need for directing groups and is compatible with free hydroxy groups as demonstrated in the preparation of glycoconjugates derived from mono-, di-, and trisaccharides and peptides (35 examples). Given its generality and broad substrate scope, the glycosyl cross-coupling method presented herein can find use in the synthesis of selenium-containing glycomimetics and glycoconjugates., (© 2018 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We report a total synthesis of the pyridine-containing limonoid alkaloid (-)-xylogranatopyridine B in 11 steps from commercially available dihydrocarvone. The central pyridine ring was assembled by a late-stage fragment coupling approach employing a modified Liebeskind pyridine synthesis. One fragment was prepared by an allyl-palladium catalyzed oxidative enone β-stannylation, in which the key bimetallic β-stannyl palladium enolate intermediate undergoes a β-hydride elimination. This methodology also allowed introduction of alkyl and silyl groups to the β-position of enones.

In the present study, SnO 2 nanoparticles were successfully synthesized by chemical precipitation method using anhydrous aspartic acid and surfactant at two annealing temperatures, 300 °C and 600 °C. The effect of surfactants cationic CTAB and anionic SDS on the synthesized SnO 2 nanoparticles (NPs) were studied elaborately. In this article, for the first time, SnO 2 NPs were employed as an excellent photocatalyst in the degradation of carbamazepine (CBZ), a popular antiepileptic drug which is most commonly detected pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) in municipal wastewater under UV-C light irradiation. Comparative studies between the photocatalytic activity of SnO 2 NPs synthesized with CTAB (SC1) and SDS (SS1) on the degradation of the CBZ drug were investigated. Parameters like the effect of catalytic loading, initial concentration, pH and contact time were also studied for optimization. The results indicate that SC1 is a better photocatalyst with rate constant 6.66 × 10 -2  min -1 than SS1 with rate 5.7 × 10 -2  min -1 . To determine the transformation product formed on the photodegradation LCMS (ESI) analysis was done. Stereoselective manipulations at the C1 anomeric position of saccharides are one of the central goals of preparative carbohydrate chemistry. Historically, the majority of reactions forming a bond with anomeric carbon has focused on reactions of nucleophiles with saccharide donors equipped with a leaving group. Here, we describe a novel approach to stereoselective synthesis of C-aryl glycosides capitalizing on the highly stereospecific reaction of anomeric nucleophiles. First, methods for the preparation of anomeric stannanes have been developed and optimized to afford both anomers of common saccharides in high anomeric selectivities. We established that oligosaccharide stannanes could be prepared from monosaccharide stannanes via O-glycosylation with Schmidt-type donors, glycal epoxides, or under dehydrative conditions with C1 alcohols. Second, we identified a general set of catalytic conditions with Pd 2 (dba) 3 (2.5 mol%) and a bulky ligand (JackiePhos, 10 mol%) controlling the β-elimination pathway. We demonstrated that the glycosyl cross-coupling resulted in consistently high anomeric selectivities for both anomers with mono- and oligosaccharides, deoxysugars, saccharides with free hydroxyl groups, pyranose, and furanose substrates. The versatility of the glycosyl cross-coupling reaction was probed in the total synthesis of salmochelins (siderophores) and commercial anti-diabetic drugs (gliflozins). Combined experimental and computational studies revealed that the β-elimination pathway is suppressed for biphenyl-type ligands due to the shielding of Pd(II) by sterically demanding JackiePhos, whereas smaller ligands, which allow for the formation of a Pd-F complex, predominantly result in a glycal product. Similar steric effects account for the diminished rates of cross-couplings of 1,2-cis C1-stannanes with aryl halides. DFT calculations also revealed that the transmetalation occurs via a cyclic transition state with retention of configuration at the anomeric position. Taken together, facile access to both anomers of various glycoside nucleophiles, a broad reaction scope, and uniformly high transfer of anomeric configuration make the glycosyl cross-coupling reaction a practical tool for the synthesis of bioactive natural products, drug candidates, allowing for late-stage glycodiversification studies with small molecules and biologics.

Described herein are the first total syntheses of naturally occurring antitumor agents disorazoles A 1 and B 1 and the full structural assignment of the latter. The syntheses were achieved through convergent strategies employing enantioselective constructions of the required building blocks, including a novel Sharpless epoxidation/enzymatic kinetic resolution of stannane-containing substrates that led selectively to both enantiomeric forms of an epoxy vinyl stannane, and a series of coupling reactions, including a Wittig reaction, a Suzuki coupling, a Stille coupling, a Yamaguchi esterification and a Yamaguchi macrolactonization.

The known procedures for the conversion of alkenylstannanes into the corresponding fluoroalkenes suffer from largely variable yields and a limited compatibility with functional groups; most notably, protodestannation becomes a serious issue whenever protic sites are present in the substrate. Outlined in this paper is a convenient alternative with a much improved application profile, which is largely unperturbed by free alcohols and amides of all sorts. Key to success is the use of F-TEDA-PF 6 in combination with non-hygroscopic and bench-stable silver phosphinate (AgOP(O)Ph 2 ) that acts as an essentially neutral, non-nucleophilic promotor and effective tin-scavenger at the same time. There are variety of effluents are dumped or directly discarded into atmosphere due to drastic industrialization which leads to damages in living organisms. To prevent many type of environmental defects our research group focused to synthesis material which degrades toxic substance like dyes with the help of ecofriendly synthesis. We have synthesized Tin oxide nanoparticles (SnO2 NPs) using aqueous extract of Catunaregam spinosa (C. spinosa) root barks. Bio-inspired synthesized SnO2 NPs were monitored by analytical characterization which inferred that SnO2 NPs resulted in shape of spherical, with size average of 47±2nm. Further bio-green synthesized SnO2 NPs were subjected to degrade toxic Congo red dye, which results in higher percentage of degradation with the K value of 0.9212 which obeys pseudo-first order reaction kinetics. This report said to be novel due to null report on SnO2 NPs synthesized from C. spinosa root bark aqueous extract which also stated to be simplest, cheaper and non-toxic while compare to other methods. Further to identify the metabolites which is present in the aqueous extract were identified through Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry with methanol as a solvent results that 7-hydroxy-6-methoxy-2H-1-benzopyran-2-one contains higher area percentage of 67.47 with the retention time (RT) of 18.660., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier B.V. A high-throughput optimization and subsequent scale-up methodology has been used for the synthesis of conductive tin-doped indium oxide (known as ITO) nanoparticles. ITO nanoparticles with up to 12 at % Sn were synthesized using a laboratory scale (15 g/hour by dry mass) continuous hydrothermal synthesis process, and the as-synthesized powders were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Under standard synthetic conditions, either the cubic In2O3 phase, or a mixture of InO(OH) and In2O3 phases were observed in the as-synthesized materials. These materials were pressed into compacts and heat-treated in an inert atmosphere, and their electrical resistivities were then measured using the Van der Pauw method. Sn doping yielded resistivities of ∼ 10(-2) Ω cm for most samples with the lowest resistivity of 6.0 × 10(-3) Ω cm (exceptionally conductive for such pressed nanopowders) at a Sn concentration of 10 at %. Thereafter, the optimized lab-scale composition was scaled-up using a pilot-scale continuous hydrothermal synthesis process (at a rate of 100 g/hour by dry mass), and a comparable resistivity of 9.4 × 10(-3) Ω cm was obtained. The use of the synthesized TCO nanomaterials for thin film fabrication was finally demonstrated by deposition of a transparent, conductive film using a simple spin-coating process.

Nano-Tin oxide was synthesized using hydrothermal method at 150 °C for 6 h and then thin films were deposited by electrophoretic method at an optimized voltage of 100 V for 5 min on electropolished aluminum substrate. Spherical particles of about 30-50 nm diameters are observed with partial agglomeration when observed under electron microscope, which are tetragonal rutile structure. XPS results showed peaks related to Sn 4d, Sn 3d, O 1s & C 1s with spin-orbit splitting of 8.4 eV for Sn 3d. Feasibility studies of enzyme less urea sensing characteristics of nano-tin oxide thin films are exhibited herein. The deposited films have been used for enzyme less urea sensing from 1 to 20 mM concentration in buffer solution. The sensors were characterized electrochemically to obtain cyclic voltammogram as a function of urea concentration and scan rate. A facile one pot method has been developed for synthesis of stable (ξ=-37.5 mV), orthorhombic structured SnS nanorods capped with mercaptoacetic acid by precipitation method. The SnS nanorods were measured to be about 45 nm long with a diameter of 20 nm, as studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The band gap of the MAA capped SnS nanorods was 1.81 eV, measured by diffused reflectance spectroscopy and was larger than the bulk SnS. The relative positions of highest valence band and lowest conduction band were determined from theoretical band structure calculation as 1.58 eV and -0.23 eV, respectively. The UV-Visible-NIR fluorescence emission spectrum of the SnS nanorods revealed intense emission peak at 1000 nm (1.239 eV) and weaker peaks at 935 nm, 1080 nm, 1160 nm which is likely to be due to Sn(2+) vacancies. The as-synthesized SnS nanorods exhibited more than 95% sunlight induced photocatalytic degradation of trypan blue in 4 h, following first order kinetics with high rate of degradation (k) (0.0124 min(-1)). The observed dye degradation is attributable to generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), confirmed from terephthalic acid assay. Nanoscale SnO2, SnS2 and SnO2/SnS2 were synthesized by hydrothermal treatment method and characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), Barrett-Joyner-Halenda (BJH) and UV-vis spectra. The photocatalytic activity of SnO2, SnS2 and SnO2/SnS2 were tested with Enrofloxacin antibiotic. The tetragonal and hexagonal SnO2 and SnS2 phase was confirmed through XRD, respectively. The photocatalytic results indicated that the SnO2/SnS2 enhanced the photocatalytic activity and could be effectively used as photocatalyst for degradation of Enrofloxacin antibiotic pollutant. The results of antibacterial experiment under visible light irradiation demonstrate that the SnO2/SnS2 nanocomposite exhibit enhanced antibacterial efficiency compared with pure SnO2 and SnS2. The antifungal activity of the nanoscale SnO2, SnS2 and SnO2/SnS2 against Candida albicans was assessed using the disc-diffusion susceptibility tests. In this work, the biocompatibility and antibacterial activities of novel SnO2 nanowire coatings prepared by electron-beam (E-Beam) evaporation process at low temperatures were studied. The nanowire coatings were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) methods. The results of in vitro cytotoxicity and cell proliferation assays suggested that the SnO2 nanowire coatings were nontoxic and promoted the proliferation of C2C12 and L929 cells (> 90% viability). Cellular activities, cell adhesion, and lactate dehydrogenase activities were consistent with the superior biocompatibility of the nanowire materials. Notably, the nanowire coating showed potent antibacterial activity against six different bacterial strains. The antibacterial activity of the SnO2 material was attributed to the photocatalytic nature of SnO2. The antibacterial activity and biocompatibility of the newly developed SnO2 nanowire coatings may enable their use as coating materials for biomedical implants.

N-, S-, and C-doped SnO2 nanoparticles were synthesized via a precipitation method and were characterized by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectral (UV-vis DRS) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) techniques. The photocatalytic activities of these SnO2 samples were investigated with methyl orange as the organic pollutant under UV light illumination. UV-vis spectroscopy demonstrated that dopants N,S,C-species can shift the absorption edge to the near UV and visible light region. N,S,C-SnO2 nanoparticles achieved the best photocatalytic efficiency and the most optimal doping ratio was 3 (T/S). The degradation of methyl orange by N,S,C-SnO2 nanoparticles fitted well with the Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetics model. The results of subsequent experiments indicate that enhanced adsorption ability of light and high separation rate of photo induced charge carriers all play an major role in promotion of photocatalytic activity of N,S,C-SnO2 nanoparticles., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier B.V. ZnO/SnO2 hetero-nanofibers about 250 nm in diameter and several micrometers in length are synthesized via an electrospun method using zinc chloride and stannous chloride as inorganic sources. All fibers are composed of many nanoparticles (5-10 nm) that induce a highly porous structure as well as high surface area. By adjusting the ratio of zinc/stannous source, the synthesized porous ZnO/SnO2 materials show various structures (corrugated fiber and tube), that are a result of the different oxidation/decomposition temperatures of the two components. Their photodegradation abilities toward various dye wastewaters (methylene blue, congo red, eosin red, and methyl orange) are demonstrated, showing fast photodegradation and good recycling ability. It is noteworthy that ZnO/SnO2 exhibits an enhanced photodegradation ability to congo red, ascribed to the high adsorption capacity derived from the strong electrostatic interaction between ZnO/SnO2 and congo red. Based on the investigation, these porous ZnO/SnO2 hetero-nanofibers possess versatile potential applications for wastewater purification.

An efficient and asymmetric synthetic approach towards one of the biologically interesting 4(S)-11-diHDHA derivatives was developed. This process mainly relied on two reactions, one is the copper-catalyzed mild cross-coupling that allows for the efficient construction of a chiral α-alkynyl α-hydroxy motif and another is the synthesis of chiral α-hydroxy α-stannanes that has previously been developed by our group featuring the asymmetric stannylation using the well-established tributyltin hydride/diethyl zinc system from an aldehyde.

A continuous, single-step, and large-scale preparation of Pd-catalyst-loaded SnO2 yolk-shell spheres is demonstrated. These nanostructures show an unusually high response and selectivity to methyl benzenes, such as xylene and toluene, with very low cross-responses to various interfering gases, making them suitable for precise monitoring of indoor air quality., (© 2014 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The SnO2 loaded ZnO (SnO2-ZnO) was successfully synthesized by precipitation-decomposition method. The catalyst was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), high resolution scanning electron microscope (HR-SEM) images, energy dispersive spectrum (EDS), diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS), photoluminescence spectra (PL) and BET surface area measurements. The photocatalytic activity of SnO2-ZnO was investigated for the degradation of Acid Orange 10 (AO 10) in aqueous solution using UV-A light. SnO2-ZnO is found to be more efficient than commercial ZnO, bare ZnO, TiO2-P25 and TiO2 (Merck) at pH 12 for the mineralization of AO 10 dye. The effects of operational parameters such as the amount of photocatalyst, dye concentration, initial pH on photo mineralization of AO 10 dye have been analyzed. The mineralization of AO 10 has been confirmed by chemical oxygen demand (COD) measurements. A degradation mechanism is proposed for the degradation of AO 10 with SnO2-ZnO under UV-A light. Indium oxide thin films are deposited on glass substrates at nitrogen flow rates of 0-50% by rf reactive magnetron sputtering and are characterized for their structural, morphological, electrical, and optical properties. The experimental results showed that the control of nitrogen flow rate has a significant effect on the properties of the In2O3 thin films. The change in the preferred growth orientation from (222) to (400) planes is observed above a nitrogen flow rate of 10%. The average optical transmittance in the wavelength range of 400-1100 nm is increased from 85.4% at 0% to 86.7% at 50%, where the smallest value of the optical band gap energy is obtained. In addition to the improvement in crystallinity of the films, the nitrogen flow rate plays a crucial role in the fabrication of high-quality indium oxide films and devices.

Recently, decreasing the amount of indium (In) element in the indium tin oxide (ITO) used for transparent conductive oxide (TCO) thin film has become necessary for cost reduction. One possible approach to this problem is using printed ITO thin film instead of sputtered. Previous studies showed potential for printed ITO thin films as the TCO layer. However, nothing has been reported on the reliability of printed ITO thin films. Therefore, in this study, the reliability of printed ITO thin films was characterized. ITO nanoparticle ink was fabricated and printed onto a glass substrate followed by heating at 400 degrees C. After measurement of the initial values of sheet resistance and optical transmittance of the printed ITO thin films, their reliabilities were characterized with an isothermal-isohumidity test for 500 hours at 85 degrees C and 85% RH, a thermal shock test for 1,000 cycles between 125 degrees C and -40 degrees C, and a high temperature storage test for 500 hours at 125 degrees C. The same properties were investigated after the tests. Printed ITO thin films showed stable properties despite extremely thermal and humid conditions. Sheet resistances of the printed ITO thin films changed slightly from 435 omega/square to 735 omega/square 507 omega/square and 442 omega/square after the tests, respectively. Optical transmittances of the printed ITO thin films were slightly changed from 84.74% to 81.86%, 88.03% and 88.26% after the tests, respectively. These test results suggest the stability of printed ITO thin film despite extreme environments.

In this article, we report a novel one-pot synthesis of SnS2/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) flake-on-sheet nanocomposites via in situ reduction of graphene oxide (GO) by Sn(2+) under hydrothermal conditions. The morphology and structure of the obtained product were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction instrument (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Raman spectroscopy. The adsorption characteristics of the SnS2/rGO nanocomposites were examined using an organic dye Rhodamine B (RhB) as adsorbate. SnS2/rGO exhibited superior adsorption behavior for RhB. The adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherm were investigated. The adsorption of RhB by SnS2/rGO was well fitted to the Langmuir isotherm model, and the resultant kinetic data were well described by pseudo-second-order model., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Inc. Mesoporous SnO2 with a high surface area of 292.7 m(2) g(-1) has been successfully synthesized via a low-cost NH4Cl-based ionothermal route. When evaluated as a gas sensor, impressive performances towards N2H4 and HCHO are achieved owing to its excellent chemical reactivity towards oxygen.

Polycrystalline Sr2SnO4 phosphors doped with Tb(3+) were prepared by conventional solid-state reaction method. Materials were characterized by powder XRD and EDS techniques. The luminescence properties of these materials were investigated under UV and VUV excitation. Upon excitation at 272 nm, phosphors exhibited intense emissions at 492 and 543 nm due to (5)D4 → (7)F6 and (5)D4 → (7)F5 transitions of Tb(3+) ions, respectively. Materials also exhibited strong emissions from these transitions under VUV excitation at 147, 173 and 230 nm. Composite materials containing different components with well-defined structures may cooperatively enhance their performance and extend their applications. In this work, core-shell γ-Fe2O3@SnO2 hollow nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized by a low-cost and environmentally friendly seed-mediated hydrothermal method. Firstly, the γ-Fe2O3 hollow NPs were synthesized by a template-free method. Then they were used as the cores for the growth of SnO2 shells. The thickness of the shell can be simply tailored by controlling the reaction time. Various techniques, including SEM, XRD, TEM and HRTEM, were employed to investigate the morphology, structure and formation process of the special core-shell hollow structures. The combination of magnetic semiconductor (γ-Fe2O3) and wide band-gap semiconductor (SnO2) endowed them with great potential to be used as recyclable photocatalysts. Experiments on photo-degradation of Rhodamin B (RhB) dye in the presence of the samples showed that the hybrid structures possessed higher photocatalytic activities than the monomer structures of SnO2 and γ-Fe2O3 materials indicating a strong coupling enhancement effect between the wide and narrow band-gap semiconductors. Moreover, the gas sensing tests of the γ-Fe2O3@SnO2 hollow NPs revealed that the samples exhibited fast response and recovery rates, which enable them to be promising materials for gas sensors.

New dimethyltin derived antitumor drug candidates (S)- and (R)-[4-(2-hydroxy-1-phenylethylimino)pent-2-ol]dimethyltin(iv), 1 and (S)- and (R)-[2,2-dimethyl-4-phenyl-1,3,2-oxazastannolidine], 2 derived from (R)- and (S)-enantiomers of [4-(2-hydroxy-1-phenylethylimino)pent-2-ol] and 2-amino-2-phenylethanol, respectively, were synthesized and thoroughly characterized. Preliminary complex-DNA interaction studies employing various optical methods revealed that the (S)-enantiomer displayed a higher propensity towards the drug target DNA double helix. This was quantified by K(b) and K(sv) values of ligands L and L' and (S)-/(R)-1 and (S)-/(R)-2 complexes, which demonstrated a multifold increase in the case of the (S)-enantiomers in comparison to their (R)-enantiomeric forms. This clearly demonstrates the chiral preference of the (S)-enantiomer over the (R)-enantiomer, and its potency to act as a chemotherapeutic agent. Therefore, the in vitro antitumor activity of the (S)-enantiomer of 1 and 2 was evaluated by the sulforhodamine-B (SRB) assay to assess cellular proliferation against five different human cell lines viz., Hop62, DWD, K562, DU145 and MCF-7. The complex (S)-1 displayed a remarkably pronounced and specific activity for K562, while complex (S)-2 exhibited significant activity towards Hop62, DWD, DU145 and MCF-7. The in vivo antitumor activity of (S)-1 and (S)-2 was carried out, which revealed significant regression in human lung tumors.

Phase pure spherical Sn-SnO2 nanoparticles (∼ 50 nm) in gram level have been synthesized from well-defined SnO microplates (∼ 2.0 μm) using focused solar irradiation. The first step of the reaction involves simple stirring of a strong NaOH solution with fine SnCl2·2H2O powder. Precipitated blue black microplates of SnO are finally transformed into high band gap Sn-SnO2 nanoparticles with sunlight. During the solid-state photodecomposition of microplates, spherical SnO2 nanoparticles along with tiny Sn(0) particles are evolved simultaneously. Tiny Sn(0) particles, improved surface area, stability toward adverse environmental conditions, and inherited negative surface charge electrostatically stabilize the Sn-SnO2 particle rendering it excellent water dispersible. The presence of Sn(0) nanoparticles in spherical SnO2 nanoparticles improves the charge (electrons and holes) separation efficiency. Then, the as-prepared particles selectively invite cationic dye molecules to the particle surface due to negative surface charge and degrade the dyes at a faster rate under UV light.

The anionic speciation of chlorostannate(II) ionic liquids, prepared by mixing 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride and tin(II) chloride in various molar ratios, χ(SnCl2), was investigated in both solid and liquid states. The room temperature ionic liquids were investigated by (119)Sn NMR spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and viscometry. Crystalline samples were studied using Raman spectroscopy, single-crystal X-ray crystallography, and differential scanning calorimetry. Both liquid and solid systems (crystallized from the melt) contained [SnCl(3)](-) in equilibrium with Cl(-) when χ(SnCl(2)) < 0.50, [SnCl(3)](-) in equilibrium with [Sn(2)Cl(5)](-) when χ(SnCl(2)) > 0.50, and only [SnCl(3)](-) when χ(SnCl(2)) = 0.50. Tin(II) chloride was found to precipitate when χ(SnCl(2)) > 0.63. No evidence was detected for the existence of [SnCl(4)](2-) across the entire range of χ(SnCl(2)), although such anions have been reported in the literature for chlorostannate(II) organic salts crystallized from organic solvents. Furthermore, the Lewis acidity of the chlorostannate(II)-based systems, expressed by their Gutmann acceptor number, has been determined as a function of the composition, χ(SnCl(2)), to reveal Lewis acidity for χ(SnCl(2)) > 0.50 samples comparable to the analogous systems based on zinc(II). A change of the Lewis basicity of the anion was estimated using (1)H NMR spectroscopy, by comparison of the measured chemical shifts of the C-2 hydrogen in the imidazolium ring. Finally, compositions containing free chloride anions (χ(SnCl(2)) < 0.50) were found to oxidize slowly in air to form a chlorostannate(IV) ionic liquid containing the [SnCl(6)](2-) anion.

As advanced electrodes for direct alcohol fuel cells, graphene-Pd and graphene-Pt composites with a trace of SnO(2) have been successfully synthesized by a modified electroless plating technique. The surface of graphene oxide is first sensitized by Sn(2+) ions, and subsequently, Pd or Pt nanoparticles are deposited on the surface of graphene oxide. Finally, graphene oxide was reduced to graphene by further adding NaBH(4). Compared to other carbon-(e.g., Vulcan XC-72R) supported Pd and Pt, the resultant graphene-Pd and Pt composites exhibit better electrocatalytic activity and long-term stability toward alcohol electrooxidation. Additionally, a trace amount of SnO(2) formed around active catalysts may also be beneficial to the enhancement of electrochemical activity.

In the absence of stabilizers in the reaction medium, the nonaqueous synthesis of metal oxide nanoparticles usually results in agglomerated products. Stabilization is however often possible in a postsynthetic treatment, involving the addition of organic ligands that coordinate to the nanoparticle surface. The ligands are commonly expected to chemisorb via functional groups; however, we have recently shown that also weakly and unspecifically interacting ligands can lead to stabilization. Here, we present detailed investigations on the stabilization, comparing the binding of weakly coordinating ligands to a system with strongly and selectively binding stabilizers and additionally exploring the effect of ligand chain length. Although in all cases stabilization and disintegration of agglomerates to the primary particle level are achieved, strong differences are observed with respect to the processes at the particle surface. Moreover, these processes are shown to be more complex than simple ligand adsorption and need to be understood for proper design and choice of stabilizers.

Single crystalline SnO nanosheets with exposed {001} facets have been prepared by an ultrasonic aqueous synthesis in the presence of polyvinylpyrrolidone, which hinders the spontaneous formation of the truncated bipyramidal SnO microcrystals and exfoliate them into layer-by-layer hierarchical structures and further into separate SnO nanosheets. The SnO nanosheets have been used as conformal sacrificial templates converted into polycrystalline SnO(2), as well as layered SnO/SnO(2) nanostructures, by calcination in air. The concept of fabrication of two-dimensional tin oxide nanostructures demonstrated here may be relevant for the crystal design of layered materials, in general.

Nanoporous SnO(2)-ZnO heterojunction nanocatalyst was prepared by a straightforward two-step procedure involving, first, the synthesis of nanosized SnO(2) particles by homogeneous precipitation combined with a hydrothermal treatment and, second, the reaction of the as-prepared SnO(2) particles with zinc acetate followed by calcination at 500 °C. The resulting nanocatalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), FTIR, Raman, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), nitrogen adsorption-desorption analyses, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The SnO(2)-ZnO photocatalyst was made of a mesoporous network of aggregated wurtzite ZnO and cassiterite SnO(2) nanocrystallites, the size of which was estimated to be 27 and 4.5 nm, respectively, after calcination. According to UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, the evident energy band gap value of the SnO(2)-ZnO photocatalyst was estimated to be 3.23 eV to be compared with those of pure SnO(2), that is, 3.7 eV, and ZnO, that is, 3.2 eV, analogues. The energy band diagram of the SnO(2)-ZnO heterostructure was directly determined by combining XPS and the energy band gap values. The valence band and conduction band offsets were calculated to be 0.70 ± 0.05 eV and 0.20 ± 0.05 eV, respectively, which revealed a type-II band alignment. Moreover, the heterostructure SnO(2)-ZnO photocatalyst showed much higher photocatalytic activities for the degradation of methylene blue than those of individual SnO(2) and ZnO nanomaterials. This behavior was rationalized in terms of better charge separation and the suppression of charge recombination in the SnO(2)-ZnO photocatalyst because of the energy difference between the conduction band edges of SnO(2) and ZnO as evidenced by the band alignment determination. Finally, this mesoporous SnO(2)-ZnO heterojunction nanocatalyst was stable and could be easily recycled several times opening new avenues for potential industrial applications.

Polymeric/inorganic nanocomposite films have been fabricated through a combination of flame-spray-pyrolysis (FSP) made inorganic scaffold and surface initiated polymerization of cyanoacrylate. The highly porous structure of pristine SnO(2) films allows the uptake of cyanoacrylate and the polymerization is surface initiated by the water adsorbed onto the SnO(2) surface. Scanning electron microscopy study reveals a nonlinear increase in the composite particle size and the film thickness with polymerization time. The structural change is rather homogeneous throughout the whole layer. The composite is formed mainly by an increase of the particle size and not by just filling the existing pores. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy imaging shows SnO(2) nanoparticles embedded in the polymeric matrix, constituting the nanocomposite material. Thermogravimetric analysis indicates that the porosity of the nanocomposite films decreases from 98% to 75%, resulting in a significant enhancement of the hardness of the films. DC conductivity measurements conducted in situ on the nanocomposite layer suggest a gradual increase in the layer resistance, pointing to a loss of connectivity between the SnO(2) primary particles as the polymerization proceeds., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2012)

Long-term stable ITO-nanoparticle dispersions are obtained using primary unbranched alkylamines with different chain lengths (C(3)-C(12)). Carbene complexes of Ge(IV)- and Sn(IV)-fluorides have been synthesized by oxidative addition of 2,2-difluoro-1,3-dimethylimidazolidine and bis(dimethylamino)difluoromethane to GeCl(2)•dioxane and SnF(2). Chloride analogs of the Ge(IV) complexes were also isolated. All compounds were characterized in the solid state by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

Single crystalline zinc tin oxide (ZTO) nanocrystallites were prepared at room temperature through association with a peptide-containing bolaamphiphile molecule. The bolaamphiphile molecules self-assembled to form spherical structures with creation of ZTO nanocrystallites inside. ZTO nanocrystallite synthesis was achieved only when the bolaamphiphile molecule was present, while a mixture of amorphous Sn and Zn precipitates was formed in the absence of the bolaamphiphile molecule. The bolaamphiphile molecule is thought to stabilize the Zn(2+) and Sn(4+) precursor ions by ligation and to induce subsequent condensation forming crystalline ZTO. The ZTO formation was achieved only at a strong acidic condition that promotes dissociation and ionization of Zn and Sn precursors and represses formation of ZnO and H(2)SnO(3). The prepared ZTO nanocrystallites had almost the same band gap energy as ZTO nanoparticles prepared by the conventional hydrothermal process. The outcomes of this study indicate that the controlled mineralization of metal precursor ions in a peptide-containing bolaamphiphile molecule suspension can be an alternative method to synthesize metal oxides at room temperature, while maintaining their crystalline structure and optoelectrical properties., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier Inc. In the presence of TMSSnBu(3) and CsF, stannylation of N-Boc- and N-Cbz-α-amido sulfones proceeded very well to afford the corresponding α-amido stannanes in moderate-to-high yields. This reaction tolerated α-aryl-, alkenyl-, and alkyl-substituted α-amido sulfones as well as substrates containing either an ester or cyano moiety, which might be reactive with lithium or magnesium stannides employed in conventional stannylation.

SnO(2) nanoboxes with uniform morphology, good structural stability, and tunable interior volume can be facilely synthesized by template-engaged coordinating etching of pregrown Cu(2)O nanocubes at room temperature. The role of indium tin oxide (ITO) surface structure and chemistry on the formation of self-assembled monolayers (SAM) derived from organophosphonic acids has been investigated. The surface hydroxide content, crystal structure, and roughness of unmodified ITO surfaces were analyzed with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and contact angle measurements. Organophosphonic acid monolayer modified ITO surfaces were then characterized using electrochemistry, contact angle measurements and impedance spectroscopy. To ascertain the extent of defects, Pb was underpotentially deposited (UPD) onto the monolayer modified ITO surfaces at defect sites and regions where the monolayer was weakly bound. The extent of defects, and the location of defects, in monolayers formed on different ITO surfaces were determined from the amount of charge passed during UPD of Pb at identical conditions, followed by XPS analysis of the Pb 4f peak and imaging with scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM). The results demonstrate that the crystal structure and hydroxide ion concentration of ITO surfaces significantly influence the quality of self-assembled monolayer formation as does the surface roughness. The most well-packed stable monolayers formed only on smooth amorphous ITO substrates with homogeneous grains and high hydroxide content. Lower quality SAMs with significant defects formed on polycrystalline surfaces and the higher the roughness the more the defects. STM defect mapping revealed that the location of defects in monolayers occurred at the boundaries between grain edges on the polycrystalline surfaces. This shows that the substrate characteristics have a strong influence on the quality of monolayers formed on ITO surfaces.

Carbon-supported precious metal catalysts are widely used in heterogeneous catalysis and electrocatalysis, and enhancement of catalyst dispersion and stability by controlling the interfacial structure is highly desired. Here we report a new method to deposit metal oxides and metal nanoparticles on graphene and form stable metal-metal oxide-graphene triple junctions for electrocatalysis applications. We first synthesize indium tin oxide (ITO) nanocrystals directly on functionalized graphene sheets, forming an ITO-graphene hybrid. Platinum nanoparticles are then deposited, forming a unique triple-junction structure (Pt-ITO-graphene). Our experimental work and periodic density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the supported Pt nanoparticles are more stable at the Pt-ITO-graphene triple junctions. Furthermore, DFT calculations suggest that the defects and functional groups on graphene also play an important role in stabilizing the catalysts. These new catalyst materials were tested for oxygen reduction for potential applications in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells, and they exhibited greatly enhanced stability and activity.

We have developed a new facile procedure for manufacturing crystalline thin films of SnO2 with a uniform mesoporous architecture and full crystallinity of the walls. The procedure is based on the evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) of prehydrolyzed tin oxide precursor directed by a commercially available Pluronic polymer. The formation of the tin oxide precursor, which can be self-assembled into a mesoporous structure, is achieved by an addition of ammonium hydroxide to a tin tetrachloride solution. The relative concentration of ammonium hydroxide as well as the duration and temperature of the hydrolysis reaction influence significantly the properties of hydrolyzed tin oxide species and the mesostructure assembled from them. The films coated from these precursor solutions and calcined at 300 °C to 400 °C exhibit a well-developed worm-like porosity with a wall to wall distance of ca. 18 nm, a surface area of up to 50 cm2 cm(-2) (corresponding to 55±5 m2 g(-1)), and high crystallinity.
