Words used to describe behavior at work have strong emotional and behavioral implications for those being judged by them. Words used to describe work behavior in assessment of work activities express measurement of performance on appraisal forms as objective or subjective. Work descriptors taken from performance appraisal forms from 47 of 100 hospitals, 35 of 480 management textbooks, and 22 of 150 journal articles were placed in three levels of objective to subjective for frequency of use. More work descriptors were subjective than objective. Work descriptors from journals presented many subjective traits but used more objective than subjective traits while textbooks included many subjective traits as objective descriptors. Use of subjective work descriptors in the journals and textbooks encourages subjective assessment of workers. To be objective performance appraisals must use objective words to describe and assess work in graphic rating forms.

Baritosis is one form of pneumoconiosis; it is excessive inhalation of barite or barium dust. Pneumoconiosis is a diagnosable disease of the lungs produced by the inhalation and accumulation of dust in the lungs, as well as the tissue's reaction to its presence(1). This is a review of baritosis and provides the environmental health professional with information needed to understand baritosis. Barite is a native form of barium sulfate ([BaSO.sub.4]). Microscopically, barite is a crystal, which is embedded in rock ore and released through a pulverizing process. Milling is done with wet or dry methods: the dry milling methods present the pneumoconiosis-related health problems. Little has been presented in the literature on baritosis, thus, its health and medical problems are not well studied. Prevention of baritosis and related environmental health and occupational health issues are presented.

Counseling and clinical observations clarify views commonly made about the pain of breaking-up a love relationship. Anecdotal reports as presented in popular music, novels, movies, and television programs illustrate the public's general awareness of the emotional dilemma of ending a relationship. Love is a strong pleasurable emotional state. Behavioral and emotional problems can result from rejection and the pain due to the loss of a love. The term 'love addiction' has been applied to persons who obsessively seek to regain the pleasurable love state which existed with a former love relationship. Dysfunctional emotional conditions such as ditrust, feelings of rejection, loss of self-worth, deep-seated anger, feelings of failure, loss, and an array of other emotional distress and self-defeating behaviors arise in the emotionally hurt person. Emotional distress must be dealth with. Rational self-counseling and psycho-therapy can be effective in helping a jilted person work through periods of distress and may help to reestablish emotional well being and good mental health. Counseling can assist the person in moving into new relationships, help the hurt person abandon dysfunctional behaviors and feelings, and aid the client in resuming a normal life.

This article discusses theoretical underpinnings of the heath education movement, including: (1) the wellness movement and health education theory; (2) health education as a recognized discipline; (3) school health education; and (4) three major schools of thought for health education and promotion. The contribution of such varied fields as education, behavorial science, biomedical science, and management and marketing to health education and promotion is considered. A case is made for the further development of health education theory with much input from these varied disciplines. (CB)

It is the academic community's responsibility to respond to the three-pronged training needs of community health educators/promotors: traditional/content health education; health education/health promotion skills, methods, and approaches; and management and administrative skills. Contributions of the Role Delineation Project and the PRINCESS and PRECEDE models to health educator preparation are discussed. (IAH)
