De nombreux usages de l'eau peuvent être fortement impactés par les pénuries d'eau (eau potable, irrigation, hydroéléctricité...). Il est donc nécessaire d'anticiper les périodes d'étiage afin d'améliorer la gestion de l'eau. Ceci est renforcé par la perspective d'étiages futurs plus sévères dans le contexte du changement climatique. Cinq institutions françaises ont développé un outil opérationnel de prévision des bas débits, PREMHYCE. Il est testé en temps réel sur une centaine de bassins versants de France métropolitaine depuis 2017. PREMHYCE comprend cinq modèles hydrologiques qui peuvent être calés sur des bassins versants jaugés et assimilent les dernières observations de débit. Les prévisions de débits sont émises jusqu'à un horizon de 90 jours selon l'approche Ensemble Streamflow Prediction(ESP) (données météorologiques historiques utilisées comme ensemble de scénarios d'entrée). Ces données météorologiques (précipitations, évapotranspiration et température) sont issues de la réanalyse SAFRAN journalière de Météo-France, sur la période 1958–2018. Les performances de l'outil sont analysées sur les étiages 2017–2018 pour 38 bassins versants sur lesquels les prévisions sont disponibles pour tous les modèles. Ces derniers ont montré des capacités d'anticipation de l'ordre de 40 jours en moyenne. La plupart des modèles présentent une précision satisfaisante pour prévoir les bas débits à courte échéance (j + 7).

Une chienne entière croisée Boxer–Labrador de 9 ans est présentée pour une dysurie, une strangurie et une vidange incomplète de la vessie évoluant depuis trois mois et s’améliorant partiellement sous traitement anti-inflammatoire (firocoxib) et myorelaxant (alfuzosine et diazépam). L’examen clinique met en évidence un urètre dilaté (palpation trans rectale) et une masse localisée au méat urétral externe (toucher vaginal) orientant vers une lésion urétrale subobstructive. L’endoscopie des voies urinaires couplée à l’analyse histologique permet de conclure à une urétrite proliférative associée à une sténose urétrale distale. Cette affection était compliquée d’une cystite bactérienne qui a été traitée par antibiothérapie. Une dilatation par ballonnet et un traitement basé sur des immunosuppresseurs ont été initiés. L’évolution et le suivi ont montré une bonne résolution des signes cliniques.

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are a group of organic chemicals, as defined by the Stockholm Convention that are persistent in the environment and accumulate in organisms including humans. Most POPs are restricted in use or no longer manufactured because of this persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicity. In addition, an association between POP exposure and human disease has been suggested. Regarding toxicological effects and particularly cancer, most POPs have been shown to induce hepatic tumors when chronically administered to rodents. Understanding the mechanisms by which POPs induce liver cancer is important in developing meaningful human cancer risk evaluation to these compounds. In this article, we have reviewed the probable mechanisms of hepatic cancer induced by POPs mode of action and molecular initiating events and the relationship of these mechanisms to potential human cancer risk.

La rareté des mesures et la complexité du terrain dans les régions montagneuses engendrent d'importantes incertitudes dans les réanalyses météorologiques de surface. L'hybridation de plusieurs réanalyses est une technique efficace pour limiter ces incertitudes. Dans le bassin versant de la Durance, deux réanalyses se basant sur des réseaux de mesures et des techniques d'extrapolation différentes coexistent, SAFRAN et SPAZM. Leur comparaison montre qu'elles sont complémentaires car les précipitations de SPAZM à une résolution spatiale plus fine que celle de SAFRAN, se basent sur un plus grand nombre d'observations en haute altitude. Cependant, SPAZM ne fournit pas l'ensemble des variables atmosphériques dont un modèle hydrologique à bilans d'eau et d'énergie a besoin, contrairement à SAFRAN. L'hybridation de ces deux réanalyses a donc été effectuée. Le produit météorologique obtenu, DuO, fournit huit variables atmosphériques (température de l'air à 2 m, pluie, neige, rayonnements incidents, humidité de l'air, vent et évapo­transpiration potentielle) au pas de temps horaire et à la résolution de 1 km2. DuO a été testé dans un objectif de modélisation hydrologique, avec le modèle semi-distribué CLSM (Catchment Land Surface Model). L'analyse des différentes variables de sortie (débits, stock de neige et évapotranspiration) montre que l'hybridation des deux réanalyses, valorisant les qualités respectives de SAFRAN et de SPAZM, permet une représentation plus réaliste des processus hydrologiques au sein du modèle CLSM.

La prévision des crues est souvent réalisée au pas de temps horaire, qui est un bon compromis entre disponibilité des données et résolution nécessaire pour bien rendre compte des phénomènes de crue. Cependant, dans un certain nombre de cas, ce pas de temps fixe est limitant, et des pas de temps plus fins (ou éventuellement plus larges) sont mieux adaptés. Il est donc nécessaire d'avoir des modèles hydrologiques capables de s'adapter à un fonctionnement à différents pas de temps. Or, cette adaptation ne se résume généralement pas à un simple changement de la longueur du pas de temps dans les équations du modèle. Elle implique une explicitation de la dépendance possible de certains paramètres du modèle au pas de temps, et également une adaptation de la structure du modèle pour que les processus soient représentés de manière cohérente entre les pas de temps. L'article présente une adaptation du modèle hydrologique GRP, qui est largement utilisé en conditions opérationnelles par les services de prévision des crues français, pour qu'il fonctionne correctement à différents pas de temps. Les tests sont réalisés sur une base de 240 bassins versants français.

Si la numérisation et l’intelligence artificielle représentent le futur de notre spécialité, l’avenir est également contraint par le réchauffement climatique et le dépassement des limites planétaires, menaçant la santé humaine et le fonctionnement même du système de santé. Le rapport de la Délégation Ministérielle du Numérique en Santé et la planification écologique du système de santé du gouvernement français confirment la nécessité de maîtriser l’impact environnemental du numérique en santé.

Une vision prospective de la gestion de l'eau du bassin de la Durance et des territoires alimentés par ses eaux à l'horizon 2050 a été élaborée, appuyée par une chaine de modèles incluant des représentations du climat, de la ressource naturelle, des demandes en eau et du fonctionnement des grands ouvrages hydrauliques (Serre-Ponçon, Castillon et Sainte-Croix), sous contraintes de respect des débits réservés, de cotes touristiques dans les retenues et de restitution d'eau stockée pour des usages en aval. Cet ensemble, validé en temps présent, a été alimenté par des projections climatiques et paramétré pour intégrer les évolutions du territoire décrites par des scénarios de développement socio-économique avec une hypothèse de conservation des règles de gestion actuelles. Les résultats suggèrent à l'horizon 2050 : une hausse de la température moyenne de l'air impactant l'hydrologie de montagne ; une évolution incertaine des précipitations ; une réduction des stocks de neige et une fonte avancée dans l'année qui induisent une réduction des débits au printemps ; une diminution de la ressource en eau en période estivale ; une diminution de la demande globale en eau à l'échelle du territoire, qui dépend fortement des scénarios territoriaux élaborés ici ; une diminution de la production d'énergie due notamment à la réduction des apports en amont des ouvrages hydroélectriques ; la satisfaction des demandes en eau en aval des ouvrages considérées comme prioritaires mais avec pour contrepartie moins de flexibilité pour la production d'énergie en hiver.

This paper presents a two‐step framework to identify key water resource vulnerabilities in transboundary river basins where data availability on both hydrological fluxes and the operation of man‐made facilities is either limited or nonexistent. In a first step, it combines two state‐of‐the‐art modeling tools to overcome data limitations and build a model that provides a lower bound on risks estimated in that basin. Land data assimilation (process‐based hydrological modeling taking remote‐sensed products as inputs) is needed to evaluate hydrological fluxes, that is, streamflow data and consumptive use in irrigated agriculture—a lower‐end estimate of demand. Hydroeconomic modeling provides cooperative water allocation policies that reflect the best‐case management of storage capacity under hydrological uncertainty at a monthly time step for competing uses—hydropower, irrigation. In a second step, the framework uses additional scenarios to proceed with the in‐depth analysis of the vulnerabilities identified despite the use of what is by definition a best‐case model. We implement this approach to the Tigris‐Euphrates river basin, a politically unstable region where water scarcity has been hypothesized to serve as a trigger for the Syrian revolution and ensuing war. Results suggest that even under the framework's best‐case assumptions, the Euphrates part of the basin is close to a threshold where it becomes reliant on transfers of saline water from other parts of the basin to ensure irrigation demands are met. This Tigris‐Euphrates river basin application demonstrates how the proposed framework quantifies vulnerabilities that have been hitherto discussed in a mostly qualitative, speculative way. Stochastic dual dynamic programming (SDDP) is one of the few available algorithms to optimize the operating policies of large‐scale hydropower systems. This paper presents a variant, called SDDPX, in which exogenous hydrologic variables, such as snow water equivalent and/or sea surface temperature, are included in the state space vector together with the traditional (endogenous) variables, i.e., past inflows. A reoptimization procedure is also proposed in which SDDPX‐derived benefit‐to‐go functions are employed within a simulation carried out over the historical record of both the endogenous and exogenous hydrologic variables. In SDDPX, release policies are now a function of storages, past inflows, and relevant exogenous variables that potentially capture more complex hydrological processes than those found in traditional SDDP formulations. To illustrate the potential gain associated with the use of exogenous variables when operating a multireservoir system, the 3,137 MW hydropower system of Rio Tinto (RT) located in the Saguenay‐Lac‐St‐Jean River Basin in Quebec (Canada) is used as a case study. The performance of the system is assessed for various combinations of hydrologic state variables, ranging from the simple lag‐one autoregressive model to more complex formulations involving past inflows, snow water equivalent, and winter precipitation. Epileptic encephalopathies with continuous spike‐and‐waves during sleep (CSWS) are characterized by cognitive or language impairment, and are occasionally associated with pathogenic variants of the GRIN2Agene. In these disorders, speech dysfunction could be either related to cerebral dysfunction caused by the GRIN2Adeleterious variant or intense interictal epileptic activity. Here, we present a patient with apraxia of speech, clearly linked to severity of epilepsy, carrying a GRIN2Avariant. A 6‐year‐old boy developed acute regression of expressive language following epileptic seizures, leading to complete mutism, at which time EEG revealed CSWS. MEG showed bilateral superior parietal and opercular independent CSWS onsets and PET with fluorodeoxyglucose demonstrated significant increase in relative glucose metabolism in bilateral superior parietal regions. Corticosteroids induced a regression of CSWS together with impressive improvement in speech abilities. This case supports the hypothesis of a triggering role for epileptic discharges in speech deterioration observed in children carrying a deleterious variant of GRIN2A. When classic antiepileptic drugs fail to control epileptic activity, corticosteroids should be considered. Multimodal functional neuroimaging suggests a role for opercular and superior parietal areas in acquired epileptic opercular syndrome. [Published with video sequences onwww.epilepticdisorders.com]

The management of large‐scale water resource systems with surface and groundwater resources requires considering stream‐aquifer interactions. Optimization models applied to large‐scale systems have either employed deterministic optimization (with perfect foreknowledge of future inflows, which hinders their applicability to real‐life operations) or stochastic programming (in which stream‐aquifer interaction is often neglected due to the computational burden associated with these methods). In this paper, stream‐aquifer interaction is integrated in a stochastic programming framework by combining the Stochastic Dual Dynamic Programming (SDDP) optimization algorithm with the Embedded Multireservoir Model (EMM). The resulting extension of the SDDP algorithm, named Combined Surface‐Groundwater SDDP (CSG‐SDDP), is able to properly represent the stream‐aquifer interaction within stochastic optimization models of large‐scale surface‐groundwater resource systems. The algorithm is applied to build a hydroeconomic model for the Jucar River Basin (Spain), in which stream‐aquifer interactions are essential to the characterization of water resources. Besides the uncertainties regarding the economic characterization of the demand functions, the results show that the economic efficiency of the operating policies under the current system can be improved by better management of groundwater and surface resources. This study investigates how environmental flows (e‐flows) can be designed as dynamic operating policies to optimize long‐term economic and ecosystem performance in reservoir systems. The main goal is to provide e‐flow solutions that contribute to better preparedness and flexibility of hydro‐systems to face multiyear stress periods, reducing the impact of water crises. The methodology framework combines a fish‐flow model with a multi‐objective evolutionary algorithm to construct multiple environmental water demand curves and capture the opportunity cost of different levels of ecosystem preservation. The water demand curves applied to a stochastic dynamic hydro‐economic model then derive dynamic e‐flow policies that balance immediate and future water use tradeoffs. The approach, termed dynamically adaptive environmental flows (DAE‐flows), is demonstrated on the Paraná River Basin, Brazil, a large‐scale hydropower system. Results show that the approach can adjust e‐flows (coordinated with other hydro‐system releases) over the time horizon, sacrificing them at certain times at the expense of some ecosystem loss, but improving long‐term ecosystem functioning. A long‐term approach to adaptation also yields better results for the environment without imposing a hard constraint to hydropower during droughts. Even under a drier climate change scenario, this allowed maintenance and improvement of environmental performance in most years, so during severe droughts the water could still be reallocated to hydropower but at a lesser cost to the environment. The environment provides us with important resources (e.g., clean water, fish, livelihood and recreation). However, in order to thrive, the environment also needs water, which has specific patterns of flow in time depending on the species that live in the rivers and lakes. As we divert and store water in reservoirs to meet other important economic demands (e.g., hydropower) those flow patterns are disturbed, along with the species relying on it. This paper investigates how we can better represent flow patterns necessary to sustain fish life in large river systems, so we can identify and implement new strategies to achieve those flows downstream of reservoirs while still maintaining good performance to other economic demands. Results show that those strategies can not only be created by combining different patterns of flow but can also be updated and adjusted as conditions in the river change in the future, resulting from drought events and even different climates. To implement those strategies however, we need operations that are flexible and aimed at the future, besides the present. This is a key learning that helps us find better ways to adapt to future challenges, preserving our environmental assets while also meeting other important demands. Stochastic dual dynamic programming (SDDP) is one of the few algorithmic solutions available to optimize large‐scale water resources systems while explicitly considering uncertainty. This paper explores the consequences of, and proposes a solution to, the existence of multiple near‐optimal solutions (MNOS) when using SDDP for mid or long‐term river basin management. These issues arise when the optimization problem cannot be properly parametrized due to poorly defined and/or unavailable data sets. This work shows that when MNOS exists, (1) SDDP explores more than one solution trajectory in the same run, suggesting different decisions in distinct simulation years even for the same point in the state‐space, and (2) SDDP is shown to be very sensitive to even minimal variations of the problem setting, e.g., initial conditions—we call this “algorithmic chaos.” Results that exhibit such sensitivity are difficult to interpret. This work proposes a reoptimization method, which simulates system decisions by periodically applying cuts from one given year from the SDDP run. Simulation results obtained through this reoptimization approach are steady state solutions, meaning that their probability distributions are stable from year to year.
