- Abstract
This paper describes an innovative interdisciplinary course offered at the University of New Orleans (Louisiana) which involved community members as full-fledged partners with students and university faculty in service-learning-by-doing teams. Each student, with the assistance of a faculty member and a community partner, identified an opportunity for community service or an area of need in the community and developed a "map" of the kinds of resources or "assets" available at the university that could be mobilized and made more accessible to the community to address this need. The first section of the paper describes the conceptualization and purposes of the course, as well as the philosophical and theoretical orientation of the course methodology. The second section discusses the innovative participatory method of assessment used in the course and its potential impact on community building. The third section describes a campus-wide forum held to share information about the course. The report concludes with three brief reports on projects conducted by students one on homelessness; one with a nonprofit organization serving elderly, disadvantaged, adolescent, and unemployed individuals; and one concerned with integrating technology into university courses.
