Abstract

This paper is concerned with the optimal production planning and inventory control. The first problem is a multiperiod production scheduling problem in which the objective is to minimize the operating cost for a planning period. This cost is composed principally of the sum of the production cost and inventory carrying cost. The second problem considers an inventory system with two decision variables in each planning period. These are the production schedule and work force which are to be determined so as to minimize the operating cost which includes the costs of changing the production rate, of changing the work force and of carrying the inventory. The maximum principle in the discrete form is used to reduce both t he first problem which has N decision variables and the second problem which has 2N decision variables respectively to a series of two decision variables problems. The so-called sequential simplex pattern search technique is used to determine the optimal values of these two decision variables. Numerical examples are given to demonstrate the method. 6. Optimization of system reliability by the sequential unconstrained minimization technique

Abstract

The reliability of a complex system was optimized by a new approach for implementing the sequential unconstrained minimization technique (SUMT) with the aid of Hooke and Jeeves pattern search and heuristic programming. Two optimization problems were considered. In the first, the system reliability was maximized subject to a nonlinear weight constraint. In the second, the weight of the system was minimized without violating the requirements of the minimal system reliability and the minimum reliability for each component. The sensitivities of the system reliability and that of the system weight to the reliability of each component were determined under optimal conditions.

Abstract

The article presents a study which evaluates a screening program for diabetic retinopathy in a community health center serving low-income patients in northern Colorado using single-field nonmydratic retinal photography and primary care clinicians trained to read photographic images. It assesses primary care clinicians' accuracy in reading the single-image retinal photographs and in correctly determining which patients need referral.

Abstract

Availability appears to be a more appropriate measure than reliability for measuring the effectiveness of maintained systems because it includes reliability as well as maintainability. This paper is a survey and a systematic classification of the literature relevant to availability. Emphasis in this paper is centered on the current state of the art on a variety of topics related to availability. Among the topics discussed are: the definition and concepts of the availability; the probability density functions (pdf) of failure times, the pdf of repair times, system configurations, and the various approaches employed to obtain the availability models; confidence intervals of availability; effect of preventive maintenance policies on availability; availability parameters in the model; and systems optimization.

26. Optimization of Life Support Systems Reliability by an Integer Programming Method

Abstract

The problem considered is to minimize the weight of the subsystems of a life support system subject to several separable nonlinear constraints while maintaining an acceptable level of reliability of the system. Zero-one integer programming is used to solve this problem. The subsystems of the life support system designed by the Space Division of the North American Rockwell Corporation are studied examples. They are the refrigerant circuit, the cryogenic oxygen circuit, the carbonization cell, and the water reclamation unit. The results obtained are compared with the original design proposed by the North American Rockwell Corporation. The comparison indicates that the use of the integer programming for determining the optimization reliability would result in an improved arrangement of the standby units.

27. A Sequential Simplex Pattern Search Solution to Production Planning Problems

Abstract

There are several efficient search procedures which have been developed recently for finding the minimum or maximum of a function of several variables. The search techniques are contrasted, as alternate ways of solving problems, to the usual algorithmic techniques of operations research such as linear and dynamic programming. Among these search procedures are Powell's method (7), Fletcher and Powell's method (3), Hooke and Jeeves' pattern search (5), and the sequential simplex pattern search (1), (2), (6), and (8). Of these, the sequential pattern search is probably the simplest and most efficient. It is the purpose of this article to expose the reader to this method and to illustrate how this method can be used to solve problems arising in production planning and inventory control.

Abstract

The efficacy of hypertonic saline/dextran (HSD) for treating hemorrhage in the presence of dehydration was evaluated in conscious swine. Following surgical preparation, animals were euhydrated or dehydrated for 24 hr or 48 hr. Dehydration resulted in a reduction in body weight and increased plasma osmolality and sodium levels, but did not alter plasma volume. Animals were bled 25 ml/kg/60 min and treated with HSD (4 ml/kg/1 min, 7.5% NaCl and 6% Dextran 70). HSD immediately rectified the decreases in mean arterial pressure and cardiac output incurred during hemorrhage. There were parallel increases in plasma osmolality and sodium concentrations which were offset by the initial differences due to dehydration. All groups showed equivalent decreases in hematocrit, hemoglobin and protein. Given these results, we concluded that dehydration does not compromise the efficacy of HSD as a resuscitation treatment for hemorrhagic shock.
