The paper presents the results of experimental studies of the operation of hybrid X-pinches on a modified high-current KING generator. The KING generator is a portable pulse current generator based on four low-inductive pulse capacitors. The output assembly of the generator was modified for greater diagnostic access to the load, which led to an increase in the inductance of the entire circuit and an increase in the duration of the current rise. A series of experiments with hybrid X-pinches with Al, Cu, and Mo wires with a diameter of 25 μm was carried out on the modified KING generator (200–260 kA, 220–280 ns, 45 kV). In experiments, it was shown that such a modification of the generator led to the stable formation of bright soft x-ray sources in X-pinches, suitable for use in point-projection radiography with a spatial resolution of about 10–15 μm. The results of the study of radiation produced by the electrical explosion of Al foil with a thickness of 4 μm with an artificial periodic structure of periodic holes with 50–400 μm steps created by laser engraving are presented. The experiments were carried out on a KING pulse high-current generator (220 kA, 40 kV, 300 ns). Images of exploded foils were recorded using pinhole cameras with a 20 μm aperture on a four-frame microchannel plate camera with 5 ns temporal resolution. In experiments on the electrical explosion of thin foils, it was shown that the application of an artificial periodic structure to the foil leads to a much more uniform radiation in the UV spectrum range along the entire length and width of the foil. Uniform radiation was observed from 20 to 70 ns. It is shown that such radiation can be used for the imaging of test objects or plasma objects like exploded wires. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We have investigated the features produced in flat metal foils as a result of nanosecond explosions and phase transitions at current densities of (0.1-2) ⋅ 109 A/cm². Thin foils made of aluminum, copper, nickel, and titanium, with thicknesses of 1-15 µm, were tested. The exploded foil structure was studied using X-pinch radiography and laser shadow imaging. Al, Ti, and Cu (5 and 7 µm thick) foils had an initial two-dimensional structure. At the same time, no apparent structure was registered in 1 µm Cu and 5 µm Ni foils. Experiments on generators with different output parameters have shown that the dominant structures that developed in the explosion are either cracks or bubbles and may depend on the orientation of the initial structure in the thin foil with respect to the current direction. In addition, the energy deposited in the foil differs by a factor of about 1.5 for the orthogonal vs parallel current and initial foil structure directions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report on experiments exploring X-ray emission from an X-pinch driven by a small Marx-waterline generator supplying 50 kA with a risetime of 50 ns and a peak voltage of ∼250 kV. Both standard crossed wire loads and hybrid loads utilizing conical metal electrodes with a single short wire in between them were studied, and in both cases reliable modes of operation were obtained for X-ray radiography. Soft (few keV) and Hard (>5 keV) X-ray emission characteristics were observed. With standard X-pinches, soft radiation emanated from a small hot spot about 3 μm in size, along with hard radiation from a ∼200 μm region close to this hot spot. With hybrid X-pinches, the hot spot was <7 μm in size. There was a clear correlation between the soft and hard X-ray emission—pinches that produced intense soft X-ray emission from a small hot spot also produced the most intense, localized hard X-ray emission.
