Abstract

Abstract Psychosocial work environment characteristics like job demands have traditionally been studied using survey data. We propose an alternative approach utilizing work related trace data collected from the information systems that employees use to achieve organizational goals. We analyze the job demands of teachers from two universities of applied sciences using trace data collected from the educational online platform Moodle over a period of 90 weeks. The data contain pairs of targets and actions (like message_sent) performed by teachers on Moodle. The timestamps of the target-action pairs allow us to study the dynamic nature of job demands, which is not possible by using periodically collected survey data. We show how trace data can be used to analyze processes related to job demands using data-driven approaches. We have identified topics, themes, temporal processes, and employee clusters from Moodle data representing the work tasks of teachers. The information obtained is action-oriented, context-specific, and dynamic, meeting the current needs for information about changing working life. The approach we have provided could be widely utilized in organizations as well as in research on occupational wellbeing. It is useful in identifying targets for intervention and it could be expanded to include prediction models on different outcomes.

Abstract

BACKGROUND & AIMS: It is not clear how intake of gluten during infancy affects subsequent risk of celiac disease. We investigated whether gluten intake before 2 years of age increases risk for celiac disease in genetically susceptible children. METHODS: We performed a case-control study of 436 pairs of children, generated from a database of 2525 children with genetic susceptibility to celiac disease in Sweden, matched for sex, birth year, and HLA genotype from September 2004 and February 2010. Children were screened annually for celiac disease using an assay for tissue transglutaminase autoantibodies (tTGA). Intestinal biopsies were collected from children who tested positive for tTGA to confirm the presence of celiac disease. Gluten intake was calculated from 3-day food records collected when the children were 9, 12, 18 and 24 months old. RESULTS: Breastfeeding duration (median 32 weeks) and age at first introduction to gluten (median 22 weeks) did not differ between cases and tTGA-negative children (controls). At the visit prior to tTGA seroconversion, cases reported a larger intake of gluten (median 4.9 g/day) than controls (median 3.9 g/day) (odds ratio [OR], 1.28; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.13-1.46; P=.0002). Abstract

Työssä voi kohdata monenlaisia yhteensattumia. Toisinaan nuo sattumukset ovat todellisia onnenpotkuja, toisinaan niiden merkitys on pienempi, mutta ne voivat silti olla hyödyllisiä tai merkityksellisiä. Nämä onnekkaat sattumat eli sattumalöydökset ovat serendipisyyskokemuksia. Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena on selvittää 1) millaisia sattumanvaraisia havaintoja asiantuntija­ työssä kohdataan, 2) missä sattumanvaraisia havaintoja tehdään, 3) missä määrin nämä havainnot tapahtuvat digitaalisessa ympäristössä ja 4) millaisia arvokkaita asioita syntyy sattuman seurauksena. Tutkimuksen teoreettisena viitekehyksenä toimii serendipisyyteen kohdistuva tutkimustraditio. Tutkimus pohjautuu kolmentyyppiseen keväällä 2019 kerättyyn laadulliseen aineistoon: haastattelut, työpaja­aineisto ja kyselyn avovastaukset. Kaikkiaan aineistoista tunnistettiin 437 sattumaesimerkkiä. Sosiaalinen vuorovaikutus ja ihmisten kasvokkainen kohtaaminen omalla työpaikalla osoittautuivat keskeisimmiksi serendipisyyskokemusten paikoiksi asiantuntijatyössä. Onnekkaitten löytöjen kautta syntyi sekä pieniä oivalluksia omaan työhön, kuten ohjelman tai sovelluksen uusia käyttötapoja, että merkittäviä tiedettä tai oman työpaikan toimintaa edistäviä havaintoja tai ratkaisuja. Tutkimus osoitti, että serendipisyys ei ole harvinainen ilmiö vaan ennemminkin luonnollinen ja olennainen osa asiantuntijatyötä.
