Published by Klinger in Nuremberg, Germany, in 1807. Second edition. Title translates to: Description of different remarkable peoples from the five parts of the world with figures representing their national costume. Board game featuring one world map and one map each of Europe, Asia, Africa, North America and Australia, as well as views of specific indigenous groups for each of those five regions. The game is housed in a box, which is decorated with marbled papers and features a pasted-on, hand-colored engraving of a European explorer amidst a group of indigenous people, all surrounding the title cartouche. The box contains a booklet of descriptive text, world map, game board, 4-page sheet of instructions, and five slipcases, each housing a map of a continent with views of figures indigenous to specific regions, wearing their traditional attire. Each view is accompanied by captions in German and French. The accompanying booklet contains detailed descriptions of the attire, diet and lifestyle of each indigenous group depicted. Pagination: [I-III] IV-SVI, [1-2], 3-127 pages. The game was a collaboration between geographer Klinger and gamemnaker Müller. A German first edition was published in 1801, followed by this second edition in both German and French in 1807. Klinger (1764-1806) was a German map, globe and game maker active in Nuremberg during the early to mid-19th century. He was consider the most prominent globe maker of his generation. Müller (1765-1828) was a Nuremberg-based educator and publisher of playing cards and other games.

Appears in Spieghel der Australische navigatie, the third part of Nieuwe werelt anders ghenaempt West-Indien., Nieuwe werelt anders ghenaempt West-Indien, published by Michiel Colijn in Amsterdam in 1622. Three titles, separately paginated but issued together. The titles are authored by Antonio de Herrera y Tordesillas (-1625), Pedro Ordóñez de Ceballos (approximately 1545 - approximately 1630) and Jacques Le Maire (1585-1616), respectively. Bound in contemporary vellum, with early handwritten annotations, in ink, on pastedown of front cover verso. Collation: printed title-leaf, engraved title-leaf, [4], 111 pages, with fourteen engraved maps on double-sheets; second title-leaf, 3-99 pages; blank leaf; third title-leaf, engraved portrait of Le Maire on verso; seven dedication and preface leaves, 72 pages, numbered leaves 73-85, with three engraved maps (two double-sheet, one fold-out) and five engraved views. Three significant accounts of “New World” and Pacific explorations, bound together as issued. Most important is the first publication of the full journal of Jacques Le Maire’s circumnavigation, the first voyage to successfully round Cape Horn. The first part is Antonio de Herrera’s account, derived from the Spanish original, Descripcion de las Indias Occidentales, which was first published in Madrid in 1601. It was next published in Latin, French and Dutch editions, all issued in Amsterdam in 1622, using the same engravings (with some variations in the compositions of various editions). The Dutch edition of Herrera was issued with the two additional works: that of Ceballos’ account of the West Indies, and La Maire’s illustrated account of "Terra Australis" (Latin for "Southern Land”). The first two parts focus on knowledge of the New World; the first part with maps of North, Central and South America and the Pacific Coast, including New Guinea and other Pacific islands, which added considerable new information of geographical knowledge of the time. In addition, the Latin title page to Herrera’s work is decorated with Castilian coat of arms, vignettes of six Aztec gods and scenes of Nova Hispania [Mexico], including a temple. The third part traces La Maire’s voyage of 1616, in search of Terra Australis, a hypothetical continent first posited in antiquity. This work represents the first true publication of the journal from the Le Maire-Schouten expedition around the world. Sailing through Le Maire Strait and rounding Patagonia via Cape Horn, this voyage had an enormous effect on future navigation, helping to end the imagined idea of a Southland. Le Maire established for the first time that New Guinea was not part of a great continent extending indefinitely to the East. This understanding altered the European perception of the archipelago, which had gone unchanged since 1545. Also, Le Maire’s voyage around Cape Horn relieved the trading monopoly of the East India Company by finding an alternative route to the East Indies that did not violate the Company Charter, which prevented other Dutch trading companies from using the existing routes of the Straits of Magellan and Cape of Good Hope. Partly inspired by Quiros and motivated by Dutch trading zeal, this was the essential precursor to Tasman’s voyage. Tasman made great use of Le Maire’s mapping of the ocean. The Le Maire voyage, the last of the 17th-century expeditions to search for the hypothetical continent from its east, was responsible for extensive discoveries in the Pacific, shown in detail on the various maps and views contained herein. Three of the views show the Eendract ship at anchor in the Solomon and Cocos Islands. The small map on the title pages of both the first and third works is the earliest published cartographic representation of California as an island, a cartographic myth that persisted until the 18th century. Herrera was the official historian to Kings Philip II, III and IV, and his Nieuwe Werelt is a precursor to his magnum opus, Historia general de los hechos de los Castellanos en las Islas Terra Firme Del Mar Oceano, which eventually covered eight decades of voyages and travels published from 1601 to 1615. In outline color with a great amount of detail about the topography and people of the region., One of the most important atlases of the American Revolutionary War period. There are 22 maps on 29 sheets. The majority of the important large scale maps of the colonies are here, appearing together for the first time after having been issued as separates by Jefferys in the 1750's and 60's. This copy is the 1st 1776 edition, with the Quebec map, without the Lake Champlain map, as issued. This copy is the same as NMM 361, except the title page says 48 copper plates rather then the 49 on NMM 361, and on the NY/NJ map it is Major Holland rather than Capt. Holland (our NY/NJ map says Major-the 1775 says Capt-our index omits Holland-the reproduction atlas map copy says Major, and Carver is eliminated (why?); probably indicates that this was slightly before the NMM 361, as the 1775 title page is identical to this one (although we have not seen it yet-relying on P1165), except for the date. Summary of editions: 1775 (actually issued in 1776, has Evans Middle Colonies map, P1165); 1776 1st issue (our copy with 48 on TP, Quebec replaces Evans, N.Y- & N.J. is dated 1776, rather than 1775 and adds Pownall corrections and improvements); 1776 2nd issue (NMM 361, 49 on TP); 1777 (1776 on TP, N. Amer changes from Bowen/Gibson to Pownall version with 1777 on map, adds L. Champlain, P1166 -our reproduction copy); 1778 (P3659a, NMM 362, no changes from 1777); 1782 (P1169, no changes except Phillips says this copy has 1783 ed of N. Amer., inserted-later?) Our TP is a transition from 1775 to NMM361; NMM361 anticipates the Lake Champlain map in saying 49 plates. Covers are half leather brown cloth covered boards with "Jeffery's American Atlas. Includes text: Note sur l'Archipel de la Terre de Feu., A complete set of the six volume Atlas Universel in original bindings of half red leather teal cloth covered boards with title "Vandermaelen. Atlas Universel..." embossed in gold on the spine. This monumental work was the first atlas of the world with all maps on the same scale (and a large scale at that - about one inch to 26 miles) and the first lithographed world atlas. If all the maps were joined together they would form a globe of 7.75 meters in diameter (such a globe was made in Brussels). The maps were published originally in parts of ten maps each, beginning in 1825 and ending in 1827. Vandermaelen's maps are frequently misunderstood because each map is usually best comprehended in the context of its neighboring maps - the maps do not function well on their own, since they were all meant to be joined. Koeman states that "His atlases, although unique in concept and size did not possess that fine touch of cartographic style which make them attractive for a collector..." We strongly disagree - the graphic art of the maps must be appreciated in the context of lithography, a developing art at the time; as lithographs, they are very well done. For many of the areas depicted, these maps are the largest scale maps made at the time, and the most detailed (particularly in the American West).
