1. Maximizing the electromagnetic efficiency of spintronic terahertz emitters

Abstract

Spintronic Terahertz Emitters (STE) represent a significant advancement in source technology, exploiting the ultrafast demagnetization process of spin-electrons to unveil a 30THz wide, gapless spectrum, accessible through femtosecond lasers across the full VIS-IR range. This innovation not only positions STEs as a pivotal advancement in THz source technology but also underscores their role as a cost-effective, high-performance solution, thereby redefining standards within the field. However, the inherent spintronic nature of these devices introduces a challenge: a lower optical-to-terahertz conversion efficiency, which positions them at a notable disadvantage relative to other sources. In response, this work aims to substantially improve the electromagnetic efficiency of these emitters. This is accomplished by maximizing the energy conversion from the pumping laser for spin-electron generation. Our design integrates STEs with an optimized 1D trapping cavity, specifically engineered to fulfill critical aspects of ultrafast excitation and THz extraction. As a result, we have realized a 245% enhancement in emission and an increase of 8dB in overall intensity, positions our results among the most substantial improvements documented in this field. Furthermore, we delineate the optimal geometry for the deployment of STEs and explore the strategic selection of substrates in depth. Such enhanced emitters advance spintronic emitters towards broader applications in time-domain spectroscopy, ellipsometry, and nonlinear THz-pump spectroscopy. Enhancing spintronic emitter efficiency, combined with rapid magnetic field modulation, indicates the potential for dynamic ranges that rival traditional sources. Our predictions of STE's efficiencies, made through an electromagnetic approach, highlight its capability to uncover overlooked aspects from an optical standpoint, leading to subsequent improvements.

Abstract

Spintronic terahertz emitters promise terahertz sources with an unmatched broad frequency bandwidth that are easy to fabricate and operate, and therefore easy to scale at low cost. However, current experiments and proofs of concept rely on free-space ultrafast pump lasers and rather complex benchtop setups. This contrasts with the requirements of widespread industrial applications, where robust, compact, and safe designs are needed. To meet these requirements, we present a novel fiber-tip spintronic terahertz emitter solution that allows spintronic terahertz systems to be fully fiber-coupled. Using single-mode fiber waveguiding, the newly developed solution naturally leads to a simple and straightforward terahertz near-field imaging system with a 90%-10% knife-edge-response spatial resolution of 30 ${\mu}m$.

Abstract

Spintronic terahertz emitters (STEs), based on optical excitation of nanometer thick ferromagnetic/heavy metal (FM/HM) heterojunctions, have become important sources for the generation of terahertz (THz) pulses. However, the efficiency of the optical-to-THz conversion remains limited. Although optical techniques have been developed to enhance the optical absorption, no investigations have studied the application of THz cavities. Here, to enhance the THz efficiency of STEs in a selected THz spectral range, FM/HM structures are realized on ultra-thin sapphire layers with metallic mirrors to create λ/4 THz resonant cavities. THz emission time domain spectroscopy of these STE/sapphire/mirror heterostructures, with sapphire thicknesses ranging from 110 µm to 25 µm, shows enhancement of the emitted THz field that fits the λ/4 cavity resonance with up to a doubling of the field in the spectrum, and in agreement with temporal simulations of the emitted THz pulse. By taking advantage of birefringent materials, we further show the potential of control of the polarization state of the emitted THz pulse. This work shows the potential of enhancing and engineering THz emission from STEs using THz cavities that can be controlled over a broad spectral range, which can be easily combined with optical cavities.

Abstract

Polarization control of THz light is of paramount interest for the numerous applications offered in this frequency range. Recent developments in THz spintronic emitters allow for a very efficient broadband emission, and especially unique is their ability of THz polarization switching through magnetization control of the ferromagnetic layer. Here we present an improved scheme to achieve full 360{\deg} nearly coherent polarization rotation that does not require multipolar or rotating external magnetic bias nor complex cascaded emitters. By replacing the FM layer of the spintronic emitter with a carefully designed FeCo/TbCo2/FeCo anisotropic heterostructure, we experimentally demonstrate Stoner-Wohlfarth-like coherent rotation of the THz polarization over a full 2pi azimuth only by a bipolar variation of the strength of the hard axis field, and with only a negligible decrease in the emission efficiency as compared to standard Pt/CoFeB/W inverse spin Hall emitters. THz measurements are in agreement with our model of the non-perfect Stoner-Wohlfarth behaviour. These emitters are well adapted for the implementation of polarimetric characterization not requiring any mechanically rotating polarizing elements. Abstract

Coupling between dynamic strain and magnetization in ferromagnetic thin films has attracted special consideration as it presents both intriguing fundamental physics problems and technological importance for potential multi-functional devices and information handling. The dynamic strain can be generated by acoustic waves including bulk, surface or guided waves. In this work, we propose the theoretical and experimental investigation of the interaction of pure shear horizontal (SH) wave with a uniaxial multilayered TbCo2/FeCo thin film in a delay line configuration fabricated on Quartz ST-90X cut. We evaluate theoretically the evolution of phase velocity as a function of magnetic field and experimentally the variation of the transmission coefficient. A piezomagnetic model was developed allowing us to calculate the elastic stiffness constants of the multilayer as a function of the applied magnetic field. The model was also implemented for acoustic waves dispersion curves calculation. We show that the evolution of phase velocity is dominated by the C66 elastic stiffness constant variation as expected for the case of shear horizontal surface wave. The fabricated device let us exciting both fundamental and third harmonic shear mode at 410 MHz and 1.2 GHz, respectively. For both modes, the theoretical results corroborate very well the experimental ones. At 1.2 GHz the mode exhibits a maximum phase velocity shift close to 2.5% and an attenuation reaching 500 dB/cm, for a sensitivity as high as 250 ppm/Oe. The reported theoretical model and experimental results are of tremendous interest for the development of advanced devices for magnetic field sensing applications as well as investigating magnon-phonon interaction at a fundamental level.

Abstract

Magnetostrictive thin films, exhibit significant utility as functionalization materials for Surface acoustic wave sensors designed for magnetic field measurements. This research investigates the influence of annealing under vacuum and magnetic field at various temperatures on the magnetic properties of the FeCo/TbCo2 thin film and therefore on the sensitivity of shear and Rayleigh acoustic waveguides functionalized with these magnetic layers. The observed effects include a reduction in magnetic anisotropy field and an increase in magnetostriction. XPS and TEM coupled with EDS microanalysis provide insights into the variations in the properties of the nanostructured magnetic film. To safeguard the magnetic film, a thin layer of SiO2 is deposited on top, serving as a protective shield. The inclusion of this layer amplifies sensitivity to applied magnetic fields for modes with shear polarization while reducing sensitivity for Rayleigh mode. In ST‐cut Quartz, the shear waves become waveguided upon the incorporation of magnetic thin films, with further enhancement achieved by introducing a SiO2 layer. Rayleigh waves are evanescent modes, the penetration depth is in the order of wavelength, and the addition of SiO2 decrease the wave confinement and therefore the sensitivity. Abstract

International audience; Spintronic terahertz emitters are new to the terahertz source family. They are broad-spectrum and gapless unlike traditional sources involving semiconductors and nonlinear crystals. Moreover, they can emit intense electromagnetic fields strong enough for nonlinear terahertz application, but on the other hand, they can operate with low excitation pulse energy, which makes them quite versatile sources. Unfortunately, spintronic emitters suffer from low conversion efficiency. In this work, we present a spintronic emission enhancement by integrating the emitter with a designed photonic structure. We show experimental results accompanied by simulations demonstrating the efficiency improvement up to almost one order.

Abstract

International audience; We demonstrate for the first time a novel THz photomixing paradigm exploiting ultrabroadband inverse spin Hall emitters. Both narrow band (∼20 Hz) CW emission by beating of two stabilized IR DFB lasers on a Pt/CoFeB/W stack is obtained as well as successful spintronic downconversion of a IR frequency comb to a THz comb with 1GHz spacing.

Abstract

The electric field (E) controlled magnetism in the multiferroic heterostructure comprising polycrystalline yttrium iron garnet (YIG) film, Pt electrodes, and lead magnesium niobate-lead zirconate titanate (PMN-PZT) ceramic is presented in this work. The electric-field-dependent magnetization and susceptibility of YIG film reveal the strain-mediated transformation of magnetocrystalline anisotropy. A strong converse magnetoelectric (CME) effect has been observed in the YIG/Pt/PMN-PZT/Pt heterostructure, and the CME coefficient can reach 17 × 10−8 s/m at 0 Oe and 4.2 kV/cm. The reversible magnetization switching by means of a low voltage pulse (±4.6 kV/cm) can be realized at 0 Oe in the YIG/Pt/PMN-PZT/Pt heterostructure, and the E-tunable susceptibility can reach Δχ/χ0+ = 55.5% at 20 Oe and 4 kV/cm. Abstract

Hybrid magnetic heterostructures made of epitaxial manganite La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 thin film and intermetallic superlattice (TeCo2/FeCo)n were prepared on orthorhombic NdGaO3 substrates and characterized by means of magneto-optical Kerr effect and magnetoresistance. Experimental data show that magnetic interaction between La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 and (TeCo2 /FeCo)n is of the antiferromagnetic type. The features observed in magnetotransport characteristics are caused by the magnetization reversal at the interface between manganite thin film and intermetallic superlattice.

Abstract

The artificial multiferroic heterostructure used in this work is composed by an yttrium iron garnet (YIG) film deposited by radio frequency (rf) magnetron sputtering on a metalized PMN-PZT ceramic. We demonstrate, thanks to the well-known converse magnetoelectric (CME) coupling, the control of the magnetic state of the YIG film by means of a low electric field applied to the PMN-PZT ceramic. In particular, it is shown that the variations of the magnetization induced by the strain are functions of the magnetic sate of the film. It is shown that the maximum amplitude variation is observed at the coercive magnetic field (Hc), whereas when H increases, the strain effect has a limited impact on the film magnetization. A second effect has also been remarked on the magnetization of the YIG film but only after the first strain induced cycle has been applied. These variations, observed only under low applied magnetic fields, can be attributed to the re-orientation of some magnetic moments which are easy to switch under low magnetic fields. We find that after poling the YIG film, i.e., applying a magnetic field on it, the initial state is restored. The CME coupling coefficient is determined for different magnetic states of the YIG film, and the maximum value 11 × 10−8 s/m is obtained at H = Hc and E = Ec (the coercive field of the PMN-PZT ceramic). The relative susceptibility tunability available for the heterostructure proposed is 16.8% for an electric field applied between 0 and −4 kV/cm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Intermetallic heterostructures of rare-earth and transition metals exhibit physical properties prospective for various applications. These structures combine giant magnetostriction, controllable magnetic anisotropy, magneto-optical activity and allow spin reorientation transitions (SRT) induced by magnetic field at room temperature. Here, we present the results of a study of spin dynamics induced by ultrafast optical excitation in the \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\hbox {TbCo}_2\hbox {/FeCo}$$\end{document}TbCo2/FeCo heterostructure. The time dependence of the light polarization rotation excited by a pump optical pulse with a duration of 35 fs was measured in the total range of the SRT created by external DC magnetic field. We found hysteretic dependence of the polarization rotation on magnetizing field that is specific for spin dynamics near SRT. Enhancement of the rotation is observed in the critical points of the SRT and near the points of magnetization switch from metastable to stable spin states. In the time-domain, two characteristic delays of 20 ps and 200 ps were found, corresponding to the maximum deviation of the light polarization after excitation. The first is explained by the precession motion of spins out of the plane of the structure. The latter is accounted for the spin in-plane deviation from its initial position and thermal relaxation of the anisotropy.

Abstract

International audience; In this work, we propose a theoretical and experimental investigation of the interaction of guided pure shear horizontal (SH) wave within a uniaxial multilayered TbCo2/FeCo thin film deposited on Quartz ST-90°X cut in a delay line configuration. We evaluate theoretically the evolution of phase velocity as a function of magnetic field and experimentally the variation of S21 transmission coefficient (amplitude and phase). An equivalent piezomagnetic model based on pure magnetoelastic coupling was used (developed allowing us) to calculate the elastic stiffness constants of the multilayer as a function of the bias magnetic field. The model was also implemented for acoustic waves dispersion curves calculation. We show that the evolution of the phase velocity with respect to the bias magnetic field is dominated by the C66 elastic stiffness constant as expected for the case of shear horizontal surface acoustic wave. In the fabricated device, both fundamental and third harmonic shear mode are excited at 410 MHz and 1.2 GHz, respectively. For both modes, the theoretical and experimental results are in agreement. At 1.2 GHz the guiding of the acoustic wave in the ferromagnetic thin film enhances the sensitivity to the bias magnetic field with a maximum phase velocity shift close to 2.5 % and an attenuation reaching 500 dB/cm, for a sensitivity as high as 250 ppm/Oe, which is better than what has been reported in literature so far. We also report that, from a specific ratio between the thin film thickness and the acoustic wavelength, the bias magnetic field can induce a breaking of the acoustic wave polarization, leading to an acoustic mode conversion.

Abstract

Joint IEEE International Symposium on Applications of Ferroelectrics and 14th European Meeting on FerroelectricitySession TuORiv3BC - ISAF1-MultiFerro & MagnetoElec II; International audience; The magnetoelectric properties of laminated heterostructures consisting of ferromagnetic yttrium iron garnet (YIG) films deposited on antiferroelectric (AFE) (Pb0.97La0.02)(Zr0.6Sn0.3Ti0.1)O3 (PLZST) and on ferroelectric (FE) 0.75Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-0.25Pb(Zr0.48Ti0.52)O3 (PMN-PZT) ceramics are compared in this work. In particular, the Converse Magneto Electric (CME) coefficient is evaluated for these two types of structures. When the electric field is applied on an AFE ceramic, the CME coefficient peaks at the switching field and, without bias magnetic field, the maximum value is 11.6 × 10-8 s/m. In case of a FE ceramic, at the electric coercive field, the CME coefficient can reach 17 × 10-8 s/m at 0 Oe. Each structure has advantages and disadvantages depending on the applications.
