In recent years, remote sensing (RS) image scene classification methods have experienced notable development due to the powerful feature extraction ability of deep learning. However, current methods for RS image scene classification (RSSC) tasks struggle with handling unseen scene categories because of their reliance on large amounts of high-quality labeled data. To address this issue, zero-shot learning has been introduced into RSSC tasks, leading to the emergence of zero-shot remote sensing image scene classification (ZSRSSC) approaches. These methods refer to inference and recognition of unseen category images by comprehending seen category image features and combining category semantic information in a multimodal learning paradigm. The inference capability possessed by ZSRSSC methods can significantly improve the accuracy and applicability of RSSC in dealing with large amounts of data in the RS domain. However, this newly emerging field has produced numerous results without a comprehensive survey to organize research progress systematically. Therefore, this article systematically reviews the research progress made on these approaches, summarizes commonly used datasets and experimental setups, and compares the results of different methods. Specifically, the definition of zero-shot learning (ZSL) is reviewed first, and the mainstream development of ZSL classification methods is briefly introduced. Then, the definition of ZSRSSC is outlined, followed by an introduction to the prevalent ZSRSSC approaches and their categorization. Finally, the critical issues in these methods are analyzed, and their future development directions are discussed.

Recent advancements in space exploration technology have significantly increased the number of diverse satellites in orbit. This surge in space-related information has posed considerable challenges in developing space target surveillance and situational awareness systems. However, existing detection algorithms face obstacles such as complex space backgrounds, varying illumination conditions, and diverse target sizes. To address these challenges, we propose an innovative end-to-end Attention-Guided Encoder DETR (AgeDETR) model, since artificial intelligence technology has progressed swiftly in recent years. Specifically, AgeDETR integrates Efficient Multi-Scale Attention (EMA) Enhanced FasterNet block (EF-Block) within a ResNet18 (EF-ResNet18) backbone. This integration enhances feature extraction and computational efficiency, providing a robust foundation for accurately identifying space targets. Additionally, we introduce the Attention-Guided Feature Enhancement (AGFE) module, which leverages self-attention and channel attention mechanisms to effectively extract and reinforce salient target features. Furthermore, the Attention-Guided Feature Fusion (AGFF) module optimizes multi-scale feature integration and produces highly expressive feature representations, which significantly improves recognition accuracy. The proposed AgeDETR framework achieves outstanding performance metrics, i.e., 97.9% in mAP0.5 and 85.2% in mAP0.5:0.95, on the SPARK2022 dataset, outperforming existing detectors and demonstrating superior performance in space target detection.

The fusion of hyperspectral imagery (HSI) and light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data for classification has received widespread attention and has led to significant progress in research and remote sensing applications. However, existing common CNN architectures suffer from the significant drawback of not being able to model remote sensing images globally, while transformer architectures are not able to capture local features effectively. To address these bottlenecks, this paper proposes a classification framework for multisource remote sensing image fusion. First, a spatial and spectral feature projection network is constructed based on parallel feature extraction by combining HSI and LiDAR data, which is conducive to extracting joint spatial, spectral, and elevation features from different source data. Furthermore, in order to construct local–global nonlinear feature mapping more flexibly, a network architecture coupling together multiscale convolution and a multiscale vision transformer is proposed. Moreover, a plug-and-play nonlocal feature token aggregation module is designed to adaptively adjust the domain offsets between different features, while a class token is employed to reduce the complexity of high-dimensional feature fusion. On three open-source remote sensing datasets, the performance of the proposed multisource fusion classification framework improves about 1% to 3% over other state-of-the-art algorithms.

BackgroundAortic regurgitation (AR) related to Behcet's disease (BD) is rare, but usually fatal. Perivalvular leakage (PVL) is high if AR related to BD treated with regular AVR. In this study, we report the surgical management of AR secondary to BD.MethodsBetween September 2017 and April 2022, 38 patients with AR secondary to Behcet's disease had surgery in our center. 17 patients did not have a BD diagnosis before surgery, 2 of them were diagnosed during surgery and received Bentall procedure. The remaining 15 patients received conventional AVR. 21 patients were diagnosed as BD before surgery, all of them received modified Bentall procedures. All patients were followed up by regular outpatient visits, transthoracic echocardiogram and CT angiography were performed to evaluate the aorta and aortic valve.ResultsSeventeen patients did not have a BD diagnosis at the time of surgery. Out of them, 15 patients received conventional AVR, and a total of 13 patients suffered PVL after surgery. Twenty-one patients had a BD diagnosis before surgery. They received modified Bentall procedures and IST and steroids were given both pre- and post-surgery. In this group treated with Bentall procedure no patient suffered PVL during follow up.ConclusionsPVL is a complex scenario after conventional AVR for AR in BD. Modified Bentall procedure seems superior to isolated AVR in these cases. The use of IST and steroids before and after surgery in combination with modified Bentall procedure could have a role in effectively reducing PVL.

ObjectiveTo determine whether different changes of pulmonary artery systolic pressure (PASP) after surgeries have an impact on the long-term outcomes in patients with rheumatic and degenerative mitral valve (MV) disease and atrial fibrillation.MethodsBetween 2004 and 2016, 1,188 patients with rheumatic and degenerative MV disease undergoing MV and Cox-Maze procedure were identified. Clinic outcomes, as well as rhythm state and echocardiography indices in long-term follow-up were recorded. Patients were grouped by the changes of PASP (persistently normal, persistently increased, increased, and decreased) from preoperative estimation to follow-up.ResultsA complete echocardiography was performed at baseline and after 5 years. During follow-up, free of death and atrial fibrillation (AF) off antiarrhythmic drugs was 90 and 61%, 78 and 41% at 5 and 10 years, respectively. Survival rate was higher in patients with persistently normal and became worse in patients with persistently increased and increased PASP (log-rank 166.0, P < 0.0001). Moreover, the patients with persistently normal PASP had a lowest risk of recurrent AF (SHR: 0817; CI: 0.765–0.872; P < 0.0001) after considering death as a competing risk. A persistently normal PASP at follow-up and degenerative MV disease were associated with improved survival and sinus rhythm (SR) maintenance at multivariable Cox regression analysis (P < 0.05).ConclusionPatients with degenerative MV disease or have persistently normal PASP during follow-up have better survival and SR maintenance rate than patients with either rheumatic MV disease or persistently abnormal PASP.

The distribution pattern of near-road air pollutants is important for addressing air pollution issues. In this study, size-segregated particle number concentration (PNC) and black carbon (BC) concentration were measured at different locations perpendicular to a major roadway in Shanghai, aiming to improve the understanding of distribution patterns of traffic-related air pollutants. Results suggest that, despite the high emission level of on-road traffic, PNC0.3-1 (particle diameter in 0.3–1 μm) exhibited negligible concentration gradients (no variation trend) with increasing distance from the road. BC and PNC>1 (>1 μm, coarse particles) exhibited significant spatial gradients, showing a pronounced increase in concentration near the road. This is closely associated with the high spatial homogeneity of fine particles and the high spatial variability of BC and coarse particles. The influence zone of traffic on pollutants was increased in rush hours due to increased emission intensity and pollutants dispersed a longer distance downwind. Additionally, the horizontal profiles of pollutants can all be well characterized by exponential curves, despite the small spatial gradient of PNC0.3-1. The concentration gradient and fall-off range of pollutants increased with the particle size (in 0.3–25 μm). This study provides implications that fine particles (e.g., PNC0.1-1, PM1) are poor tracers of traffic emissions, which could perform poorly in characterizing the behavior of traffic emissions in the road environment but are more related to regional and background components. Moreover, the evaluation of pollutant traceability before the field study could contribute to improved experimental efficiency and more satisfactory results.

Background: Acute aorta dissection (AD) is a fatal emergency, however, studies addressing the clinical characteristics, management, and outcome of acute AD in young adult patients aged under 45 years in China are very few. Methods: A retrospective study including 490 patients with acute AD as the final diagnosis was conducted. Patients’ demographics, clinical characteristics, medical history, and laboratory and diagnostic imaging findings were retrieved from medical records. Results: The median age of young adult patients with acute AD was 38 years old with an interquartile range from 33 to 41. Male and smoker constituted 84.49% and 50.61% of the cohort, respectively. Hypertension was found in 54.49%, while Marfan syndrome was seen in 4.29% of the patients. Abrupt onset of chest or back pain was the most common symptoms (85.31%), while altered consciousness, coma and oliguria were less reported. Most patients (89.39%) were managed with surgical interventions. Typical complications (central nervous system complications, spinal cord ischemia, myocardial ischemia/infarction, mesenteric ischemia/infarction and acute renal failure) were seen in a small portion of treated patients during perioperative period. Planetary rover systems need to perform terrain segmentation to identify feasible driving areas and surround obstacles, which falls into the research area of semantic segmentation. Recently, deep learning (DL)-based methods were proposed and achieved great performance for semantic segmentation. However, due to the on-board processor platform’s strict comstraints on computational complexity and power consumption, existing DL approaches are almost impossible to be deployed on satellites under the burden of extensive computation and large model size. To fill this gap, this paper targeted studying effective and efficient Martian terrain segmentation solutions that are suitable for on-board satellites. In this article, we propose a lightweight ViT-based terrain segmentation method, namely, SegMarsViT. In the encoder part, the mobile vision transformer (MViT) block in the backbone extracts local–global spatial and captures multiscale contextual information concurrently. In the decoder part, the cross-scale feature fusion modules (CFF) further integrate hierarchical context information and the compact feature aggregation module (CFA) combines multi-level feature representation. Moreover, we evaluate the proposed method on three public datasets: AI4Mars, MSL-Seg, and S5Mars. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed SegMarsViT was able to achieve 68.4%, 78.22%, and 67.28% mIoU on the AI4Mars-MSL, MSL-Seg, and S5Mars, respectively, under the speed of 69.52 FPS.

ABSTRACT: Background: Cirrhosis-associated immune dysfunction (CAID) contributes to high sepsis risk in patients with chronic liver disease. Various innate and; to a lesser extent; adaptive immune dysfunctions have been described as contributors to CAID leading to immune-paresis and impaired anti-microbial response in cirrhosis. In this study, we examined the phenotype of CD8+ T cells in chronic liver disease with the aim to evaluate changes that might contribute to impaired immune responses. Methods: Sixty patients with cirrhosis were prospectively recruited for this study. CD8+ T cells from peripheral blood, ascites and liver explants were characterized using flow cytometry and immunohistochemistry, respectively. The transcriptional signature of flow-sorted HLA-DR+CD8+ T cells was performed using Nanostring™ technology. HLA-DR+CD8+ T cells interactions with PBMCs and myeloid cells were tested in vitro. Findings: Peripheral CD8+ T cells from cirrhotic patients displayed an altered phenotype characterized by high HLA-DR and TIM-3 surface expression associated with concomitant infections and disease severity, respectively. Paired peritoneal CD8+ T cells expressed more pronounced levels of HLA-DR and PD-1 compared to peripheral CD8+ T cells. HLA-DR+CD8+ T cells were enriched in cirrhotic livers compared to controls. TIM-3, CTLA-4 and PD-1 levels were highly expressed on HLA-DR+CD8+ T cells and co-expression of HLA-DR and PD1 was higher in patients with poor disease outcomes. Genes involved in cytokines production and intracellular signalling pathways were strongly down-regulated in HLA-DR+CD8+ T cells. In comparison to their HLA-DR− counterparts, HLA-DR+CD8+ T cells promoted less proliferation of PBMCs and induced phenotypic and functional dysfunctions in monocytes and neutrophils in vitro. Interpretation: In patients with cirrhosis, CD8+ T cells display a phenotypic, functional and transcriptional profile which may contribute to CAID. Objective: To analyze the clinical outcome of corticosteroid and/or immunosuppressive treatment preoperatively in patients with Takayasu's arteritis. Patients and Methods: Forty-six patients with Takayasu's arteritis who received cardiovascular surgery between January 2010 and December 2015 in Beijing Anzhen Hospital were enrolled in this study. Their clinical characteristics, preoperative drug therapy, surgical treatment, and pathological examination results were retrospectively analyzed for the effect of drugs on outcome of the surgery. Results: All 8 patients with active disease prior to surgery had postoperative complications including one death due to stubborn perivalvular regurgitation induced heart failure during the perioperative period. Among 38 patients without active disease prior to surgery, only 4 patients (10.5%) had postoperative complications. Thirty-four patients showed symptomatic relief in the perioperative period, of whom 23 patients treated with corticosteroid and/or immunosuppressive agents preoperatively. Conclusion: The surgery can effectively improve the symptoms of patients with Takayasu's arteritis. Active disease of Takayasu's arteritis markedly increased risk for postoperative complication and resulted in poor outcome of the surgery. Treatment with corticosteroid and/or immunosuppressive agents before surgery can effectively control the patient's condition, improve the rate of remission, and effectively reduce the incidence of postoperative complications.

The hyperspectral image compression scheme is a trade-off between the limited hardware resources of the on-board platform and the ever-growing resolution of the optical instruments. Predictive coding attracts researchers due to its low computational complexity and moderate memory requirements. We propose a near-lossless prediction-based compression scheme that removes spatial and spectral redundant information, thereby significantly reducing the size of hyperspectral images. This scheme predicts the target pixel’s value via a linear combination of previous pixels. The weight matrix of the predictor is iteratively updated using a recursive least squares filter with a loop quantizer. The optimal number of bands for prediction was analyzed experimentally. The results indicate that the proposed scheme outperforms state-of-the-art compression methods in terms of the compression ratio and quality retrieval.

CD80 and CD86 are expressed on antigen presenting cells (APCs) and their role in providing costimulation to T cells is well established. However, it has been shown that these molecules can also be expressed by T cells, but the significance of this observation remains unknown. We have investigated stimuli that control CD80 and CD86 expression on T cells and show that in APC-free conditions around 40% of activated, proliferating CD4+ T cells express either CD80, CD86 or both. Expression of CD80 and CD86 was strongly dependent upon provision of CD28 costimulation as ligands were not expressed following TCR stimulation alone. Furthermore, we observed that CD80+ T cells possessed the hallmarks of induced regulatory T cells (iTreg), expressing Foxp3 and high levels of CTLA-4 whilst proliferating less extensively. In contrast, CD86 was preferentially expressed on INF-γ producing cells, which proliferated more extensively and had characteristics of effector T cells. Finally, we demonstrated that CD80 expressed on T cells inhibits CTLA-4 function and facilitates the growth of iTreg. Together these data establish endogenous expression of CD80 and CD86 by activated T cells is not due to ligand capture by transendocytosis and highlight clear differences in their expression patterns and associated functions.

The limited resource of Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) is precious and most telecommunication, weather and navigational satellites are placed in this orbit. In order to guarantee the safety and health of active satellites, advanced surveillance and warning of unknown space targets such as space debris are crucial. However, space object detection still remains a very challenging problem because of the weak target characteristics and complex star background. To solve this problem, we conduct a deep-learning-based framework called PP-YOLOv2 for single-frame object detection and design a post-processing algorithm named CFS for further candidate filtration and supplement. First, we transform the label information and generate the according bounding boxes to train the PP-YOLOv2 detector to extract candidate coordinates for each frame. Then, the CFS technique is designed as an effective post-processing procedure to obtain the eventual prediction results. Experiments were conducted over a dataset from the Kelvins SpotGEO challenge, which demonstrate the effectiveness and the comparable detection performance of our proposed pipeline. Finally, the deployment results on NVIDIA Jetson Nano show that the proposed method has a competitive application prospect for a space target monitoring system.

CD80 and CD86 are expressed on antigen presenting cells and are required to engage their shared receptor, CD28, for the costimulation of CD4 T cells. It is unclear why two stimulatory ligands with overlapping roles have evolved. CD80 and CD86 also bind the regulatory molecule CTLA-4. We explored the role of CD80 and CD86 in the homeostasis and proliferation of CD4+FoxP3+ regulatory T cells (Treg), which constitutively express high levels of CTLA-4 yet are critically dependent upon CD28 signals. We observed that CD86 was the dominant ligand for Treg proliferation, survival, and maintenance of a regulatory phenotype, with higher expression of CTLA-4, ICOS, and OX40. We also explored whether CD80-CD28 interactions were specifically compromised by CTLA-4 and found that antibody blockade, clinical deficiency of CTLA-4 and CRISPR-Cas9 deletion of CTLA-4 all improved Treg survival following CD80 stimulation. Taken together, our data suggest that CD86 is the dominant costimulatory ligand for Treg homeostasis, despite its lower affinity for CD28, because CD80-CD28 interactions are selectively impaired by the high levels of CTLA-4. These data suggest a cell intrinsic role for CTLA-4 in regulating CD28 costimulation by direct competition for CD80, and indicate that that CD80 and CD86 have discrete roles in CD28 costimulation of CD4 T cells in the presence of high levels of CTLA-4.

The value of Xin can find its origin in the Analects and other works by Confucius. Taking the perspectives from ethics and social psychology, pills this research aims to probe possible psychological basis for the value of Xin and discuss it from two aspects extracted from the Analects, i.e. being trustworthy and being able to trust. However, among Confucian ethics, the significance of the value of Xin is somehow underestimated, especially the willingness and ability to trust others. The discussion of Confucian ethical value of Xin focuses on the fusion and fission processes of turning the value of Xin into moral trait and behaviour, and extends into the development of moral personality. The fusion process of incorporating credibility into self and the fission process of transmitting trust into otherness reflect the importance of social interaction and learning experience in forming moral personality, as Confucius used to emphasized in his teaching. The driving force of these processes and the connection between ethical values and moral personality is the courage to be trusting, as well as trusty. A moral personality characterized by the courage to trust echoes the courage to connect self to others, which is enhanced by the effectively formed and activated schema of trust. Bringing Confucian ethics in the light of personality psychology, this multidisciplinary study may provide a new perspective to examine moral behaviour by unveiling the psychological link between ethical values and moral personality, which is the courage to be connected to others, i.e. the courage to trust.

NPAS3 (Neuronal PAS domain protein 3) and VGF (VGF Nerve Growth Factor Inducible) are important for neurogenesis and psychiatric disorders. Previously, we have demonstrated that NPAS3 regulates VGF at the transcriptional level. In this study, VGF (non-acronymic) was found regulated by NPAS3 in neuronal stem cells. However, the underlying mechanism of this regulation remains unclear. This studies aim was to explore the correlation of NPAS3 and VGF, and their roles in neural cell proliferation, in the context of psychiatric illnesses. Firstly, we focused on the structure of NPAS3, to identify the functional domain of NPAS3. Truncated NPAS3 lacking transactivation domain was also found to activate VGF, which suggested that not only transactivation domain but other structural motifs were involved in the regulation. Secondly, Mutated enhancer box (E-box) of VGF promoter showed significant response to this basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factor, which suggested an indirect regulatory mechanism for controlling VGF expression by NPAS3. κB site within VGF promoter was identified for VGF activation induced by NPAS3, apart from direct binding to E-box. Furthermore, ectopically expressed NPAS3 in PC12 cells produced parallel responses for nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells [NF-κB (P65)] expression, which specifies that NPAS3 regulates VGF through the NF-κB signaling pathway. Over-expression of NPAS3 also enhances the cell proliferation, which can be blocked by knockdown of VGF. Finally, NPAS3 was found to influence proliferation of neural cells through VGF. Therefore, downstream signaling pathways that are responsible for NPAS3-VGF induced proliferation via glutamate receptors were explored. Combining this work and published literature, a potential network composed by NPAS3, NF-κB, Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF), Nerve growth factor (NGF) and VGF, was proposed. This network collectively detailed how NPAS3 connects with VGF and intersected neural cell proliferation, synaptic activity and psychiatric disorders.

Although the expression of PECAM-1 (CD31) on vascular and haematopoietic cells within the bone marrow microenvironment has been recognized for some time, its physiological role within this niche remains unexplored. In this study we show that PECAM-1 influences steady state hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) progenitor numbers in the peripheral blood but not the bone marrow compartment. PECAM-1(-/-) mice have higher levels of HSC progenitors in the blood compared to their littermate controls. We show that PECAM-1 is required on both progenitors and bone marrow vascular cells in order for efficient transition between the blood and bone marrow to occur. We have identified key roles for PECAM-1 in both the regulation of HSC migration to the chemokine CXCL12, as well as maintaining levels of the matrix degrading enzyme MMP-9 in the bone marrow vascular niche. Using intravital microscopy and adoptive transfer of either wild type (WT) or PECAM-1(-/-) bone marrow precursors, we demonstrate that the increase in HSC progenitors in the blood is due in part to a reduced ability to migrate from blood to the bone marrow vascular niche. These findings suggest a novel role for PECAM-1 as a regulator of resting homeostatic progenitor cell numbers in the blood.

Two new Cortinarius species in subgenus Leprocybe, Cortinarius hengduanensis and C. yadingensis, are proposed based on a combination of morphological and molecular evidence. Cortinarius hengduanensis has distinct olive tinged basidiomata, a squamulose pileus, and small, subglobose to broadly ellipsoid basidiospores, the ITS sequence differs from that of C. flavifolium by at least 28 substitutions and independent positions. Cortinarius yadingensis has a squamulose pileus and subglobose to broadly ellipsoid coarsely verrucose basidiospores, the ITS sequence has at least 11 substitutions and index position deviations from the other members of the Leprocybe section.
