The diagnosis and treatment of two cases of osteochondritis dissecans affecting the lateral ridge of the trochlea of the tibial tarsal bone is described. Radiographs taken in medio‐lateral and oblique projections proved to be the most valuable for diagnosis. The lesions were treated surgically via a limited cranio‐lateral approach. The clinical features, radiographic findings, management and outcome in 13 cases of traumatic fracture of the hock joint are reported. The principal fracture sites were the distal tibial malleoli (5 cases), the fibular tarsal bone (4 cases), the tibial tarsal bone (3 cases) and the proximal end of metatarsal IV (one case). An additional small chip fracture of the central tarsal was noted in 2 cases. Three horses were destroyed immediately after diagnosis, 2 failed to recover following surgical intervention and one remained lame and was destroyed after 3 months' rest. Seven horses recovered completely and returned to work following periods of rest ranging from 3 to 9 months. The fracture involved the lateral or medial malleolus in 5 of these cases and the fibular tarsal in the other 2.

The clinical histories of nineteen cases of osteochondritis dissecans of the medial ridge of the tibial tarsal bone are described. The clinical signs were lameness and a reduced range of joint flexion. Radiography demonstrated changes over the medial ridge of the tibial tarsal bone. Untreated cases remained lame and the rapid development of degenerative joint changes was noted. Cases treated promptly by arthrotomy, removal of the detached flap of cartilage and curettage made a quick and permanent recovery. Access to the lesion was gained by a postero-medial approach.

Fracture of the tibial tarsal bone was encountered in two dogs. In one case, coaptation in flexion resulted in joint stiffness and persistent lameness. In the other, open reduction and transverse pinning of each fragment to the adjacent fibular tarsal bone was followed by uncomplicated healing and normal function of the tarsus. Resume.
