Abstract

Next-generation data networks need to support Tb/s rates. In-phase and quadrature (IQ) modulation combine phase and intensity information to increase the density of encoded data, reduce overall power consumption by minimising the number of channels, and increase noise tolerance. To reduce errors when decoding the received signal, intersymbol interference must be minimised. This is achieved with pure phase modulation, where the phase of the optical signal is controlled without changing its intensity. Phase modulators are characterised by the voltage required to achieve a $\pi$ phase shift V$_{\pi}$, the device length L, and their product V$_{\pi}$L. To reduce power consumption, IQ modulators are needed with$<$1V drive voltages and compact (sub-cm) dimensions, which translate in V$_\pi$L$<$1Vcm. Si and LiNbO$_3$ (LN) IQ modulators do not currently meet these requirements, because V$_{\pi}$L$>$1Vcm. Here, we report a double single-layer graphene (SLG) Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) with pure phase modulation in the transparent regime, where optical losses are minimised and remain constant with increasing voltage. Our device has $V_{\pi}L\sim$0.3Vcm, matching state-of-the-art SLG-based MZMs and plasmonic LN MZMs, but with pure phase modulation and low insertion loss ($\sim$5dB), essential for IQ modulation. Our $V_\pi L$ is$\sim$5 times lower than the lowest thin-film LN MZMs, and$\sim$3 times lower than the lowest Si MZMs. This enables devices with complementary metal-oxide semiconductor compatible V$_\pi$L ($<$1Vcm) and smaller footprint than LN or Si MZMs, improving circuit density and reducing power consumption by one order of magnitude.

Abstract

Molecular genetic testing is an increasingly available test to support the clinical diagnosis of inherited cardiovascular diseases through identification of pathogenic gene variants and to make a preclinical genetic diagnosis among proband's family members (so-called “cascade family screening”). In athletes, the added value of molecular genetic testing is to assist in discriminating between physiological adaptive changes of the athlete's heart and inherited cardiovascular diseases, in the presence of overlapping phenotypic features such as ECG changes, imaging abnormalities or arrhythmias (“grey zone”). Additional benefits of molecular genetic testing in the athlete include the potential impact on the disease risk stratification and the implications for eligibility to competitive sports. This position statement of the Italian Society of Sports Cardiology aims to guide general sports medical physicians and sports cardiologists on clinical decision as why and when to perform a molecular genetic testing in the athlete, highlighting strengths and weaknesses for each inherited cardiovascular disease at-risk of sudden cardiac death during sport. The importance of early (preclinical) diagnosis to prevent the negative effects of exercise on phenotypic expression, disease progression and worsening of the arrhythmogenic substrate is also addressed.

Abstract

Astrocytes and oligodendrocytes are known to play critical roles in the central nervous system development, homeostasis and response to injury. In addition to their well-defined functions in synaptic signaling, blood-brain barrier control and myelination, it is now becoming clear that both glial cells also actively produce a wide range of immune-regulatory factors and engage in an intricate communication with neurons, microglia or with infiltrated immune cells, thus taking a center stage in both inflammation and resolution processes occurring within the brain. Resolution of inflammation is operated by the superfamily of specialized pro-resolving lipid mediators (SPMs), that include lipoxins, resolvins, protectins and maresins, and that altogether activate a series of cellular and molecular events that lead to spontaneous regression of inflammatory processes and restoration of tissue homeostasis. Here, we review the manifold effects of SPMs on modulation of astrocytes and oligodendrocytes, along with the mechanisms through which they either inhibit inflammatory pathways or induce the activation of protective ones. Furthermore, the possible role of SPMs in modulating the cross-talk between microglia, astrocytes and oligodendrocytes is also summarized. This SPM-mediated mechanism uncovers novel pathways of immune regulation in the brain that could be further exploited to control neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration

Abstract

ZnSe-based electron-beam pumped vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers for the green (λ=530 nm) and blue (λ=462 nm) spectral region have been realized. Structures with and without epitaxial bottom distributed Bragg reflector have been fabricated and characterized. The samples consist of an active region containing 20 quantum wells with a cavity length varying between an optical thickness of 10 λ to 20 λ. The active material is ZnCdSSe in case of the green devices and ZnSe for the blue ones. Room temperature single mode lasing for structures with and without epitaxial bottom mirror with a maximum output power up to 5.9W (green) and 3.3W (blue) is achieved, respectively. Abstract

Thesauri are tools which semantically organize a domain of knowledge for operational purposes. Their relational semantics is concerned with methods that connect terms with related meanings and it is important to support information retrieval, enhancing the information recall performance and contributing to improve precision. In fact, the network of relations of a thesaurus has an important semantic function, providing a representation of the meaning of each thesaurus term and a map of the conceptual structure of a subject area. The traditional thesaurus format - as described in international standards - includes the hierarchical, associative and equivalence relationships. However, a rather widespread opinion is that this format should be refined, in order to cope with the current needs of information organization. This paper discusses the possibility of refining the associative relation into a number of sub-kinds by adopting the semantic model of EuroWordNet (EWN), as it was used, according to one of its national versions, ItalWordNet (IWN), taking into account the terminological database Mariterm, which contains terms belonging to the maritime domain. It is also stressed how RT designation and refinement appear to be domain dependent, in the sense that they are associated with the specific features of a knowledge field.

Abstract

This paper will touch upon the issue of meaning representation and organization in multilingual thesauri. More than ever before, these tools have the chance to play a significant role in facilitating access to information in the globally interrelated world, but have to cope with the issue of how the diversity of languages is related to the diversity of cultures, of ways of living and conceptualizing reality. In order to fulfil their function of representing a domain cross-linguistically, and thus cross-culturally, the way in which thesauri are conceived matters significantly. This paper analyses two different approaches on how to develop a multilingual thesaurus: one based on a symmetrical semantic structuring of the terms and a second one on a non-symmetrical organization. The first approach implies a high level of compatibility between languages, defining an equivalent term for each descriptor of the thesaurus as well as an identical semantic arrangement, in all the languages of the tool, as opposed to the second one which does not presuppose this equivalence in all cases and where semantic structures are allowed to differ. The implications that these different approaches have on the possibility to design thesauri with an authentic multilingual/multicultural character are also evaluated.

Abstract

This paper focuses on polysemy, the phenomenon by which a word has a network of multiple but related senses, as a characterizing feature of the philosophical lexicon. Many philosophical terms, in fact, are typified by a considerable stratification of meaning, which originates from the history of their semantics, where meanings accumulate over time and past knowledge is continually reintroduced and re-elaborated into new forms of theorizations. Developing a domain-specific knowledge organization system (KOS), like a thesaurus, would be largely affected by this feature. The demand for semantic disambiguation is, in fact, amplified. Furthermore, together with their frequent polysemy, the level of abstraction of the philosophical terms and the conceptual complexity of this domain make the thesaural semantic arrangement, especially the hierarchical structures, rather difficult to be set up. On the basis of a Wittgensteinian conception of meaning and its implication for information retrieval issues, some preliminary ideas on how to proceed on this topic are presented.

This refinement is necessary to enhance thesaurus suitability for uses in artificial intelligence (AI) and in the Semantic Web environments, as well as to increase possibilities for IR. This paper discusses the possibility of refining the associative relation into a number of sub-kinds by adopting the semantic model of EuroWordNet (EWN), as it was used, according to one of its national versions, ItalWordNet (IWN), to structure a terminological resource for a specific domain. A number of issues that such a work of refinement could imply, and in particular its domain dependence, are also discussed.
