Background and aim In recent years, diammonium phosphate (DAP) has gradually replaced fused calcium magnesium phosphate (FCMP) as the main source of phosphorus in sugarcane fields in China. This substitution tended to accelerate soil acidification. We aim to quantify the effect of DAP replacing FCMP on soil acidification rate (SAR) by using conservative ion cycling. Methods A 3-yr experiment in a sugarcane field was performed. We use conservative ions to assessed conservative alkalinity (CA), and CA was defined by subtracting the sum of the charges of conservative anions (SO42− and Cl−) from the sum of the charges of conservative cations (K+, Na+, Ca2+, and Mg2+). SAR was assessed by the input and output of CA. Results CA loss and H+ production have a significant positive correlation. In sugarcane field, CA was output from topsoil by 7.1 to 8.9 kmolc ha–1 yr–1 through leaching and sugarcane harvesting, which continuously acidified the topsoil. Among them, sugarcane removal and leaching contributed 62–66% and 34–38%, respectively. The CA input by deposition alleviated 7.7–9.7% of the CA output. When the FCMP application rate was 500 kg ha–1 yr–1 on average, fertilization alleviated 105.8% of the CA output. When FCMP was replaced by DAP, the SAR increased by 7.4 kmolc ha–1 yr–1. Conclusions Replacing FCMP with DAP changes conservative ion cycling, causes the soil to lose more CA, and increases the SAR in sugarcane fields in China. Its subsequent impact on sugarcane production requires further attention.

Many Chinese croplands are suffering from soil acidification, defined as a decrease in soil acid neutralizing capacity (ANC), due to over-application of nitrogen (N) fertilizer and removal of base cations (BCs) in crop harvest. The contribution of fertilization and harvesting on soil acidification rates for different cropping systems is, however, seldom quantified under field conditions. Here, field experiments were conducted on a moderately acid silty clay soil in southwest China to quantify proton (H+) production rates under three fertilization management regimes, including control (non-N), optimized fertilization and farmers’ practices (i.e. over fertilization), by measuring the inputs and outputs of major element in three cropping systems, i.e. rice-fallow, rice-wheat and maize-wheat. The maize-wheat cropping system had the highest proton production rates (2.3–10.2 kmolc H+ ha−1 yr−1), followed by rice-fallow (3.2–4.6 kmolc H+ ha−1 yr−1) and rice-wheat (2.2–4.5 kmolc H+ ha−1 yr−1) systems. Crop removal, dominated by straw removal, was the main driver of proton production in all three cropping systems, contributing over 50% of the total H+ production. Compared to the control, N fertilizer application enhanced soil acidification rates among three cropping systems, but had no significant effects on H+ production per kg grain in the rice-fallow and rice-wheat systems. The same was true for the maize-wheat system in case of optimized fertilization, but over fertilization increased both soil acidification rate and H+ production per kg grain, while grain yield was comparable to that with optimized fertilization. The change in soil ANC was dominated by accumulation of SO42− (leading to potential soil acidification) that was mainly added to the soil with superphosphate containing high concentrations of both Ca2+ and SO42− sometimes even causing an increase in the base cation pool, despite BC crop removal. The low contribution of N transformation processes to the total H+ production (3–47%) was due to high denitrification in this specific soil. The soil pH and base saturation did not change significantly among the three fertilization management regimes, largely due to the large BCs pools in the soil. Although the common farmers’ practice does not strongly increase proton production in rice-fallow and rice-wheat systems, it still implies a waste of N fertilizer as the excess N input is either enhancing straw production or lost to air in this silty clay soil. Hence, optimized fertilization and localized BCs-rich straw return are suggested to reduce costs of N fertilizer without yield losses and mitigate soil acidification in those systems.

Atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition, climatic variables and anthropogenic management affect grassland-ecosystem stability by driving changes in plant community and loss of plant diversity. Determination of their influences on plant composition and diversity is essential for predicting ecosystem response to future global changes and for making policies of sustainable grassland management. We evaluated the relative contributions of atmospheric N deposition, climatic variables and grassland management to plant diversity and N accumulation by temporally monitoring the changes in plant community and N status in a temperate grassland ecosystem. Ambient low-level N deposition combined with long-term grassland enclosure led to increases in above-ground biomass and abundance of grasses and sedges, and decreases in those of forbs. The dominant species of perennial forbs and grasses also displayed divergence in their biomass and abundance over time. Nitrogen deposition made greater contributions to the divergent changes in perennial forbs and grasses. However, air temperature and precipitation fluctuations mainly contributed to the annual fluctuations in annual and biennial species. Long-term enclosure aggravated the cumulative effects of soil inorganic N on plant-diversity loss while mowing had opposite effects on the N accumulation. Synthesis and applications. Ambient low-level N deposition can drive loss of plant diversity due to N accumulation in grassland ecosystem under long-time enclosure. Therefore, appropriate grassland management, such as rationally grazing and/or mowing, may be effective practices in terms of maintenance of plant biodiversity under the scenario of enhanced atmospheric N deposition.

Stringent emission controls during the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit (APEC; November 5–11, 2014) provide a valuable opportunity to examine the impact of such measures on the chemical properties of PM2.5 and other air pollutants. Here, we measured the water-soluble inorganic ions (WSII) and carbonaceous species in PM2.5, NH3 and NO2 at multiple sites in Beijing between September and November 2014. Relative to the pre-APEC period (September and October 2014), significant reductions in the average concentrations of WSII (69% for NO3−, 68% for SO42−, 78% for NH4+, and 29–71% for other species), elemental carbon (EC, 43%) and organic carbon (OC, 45%) in PM2.5 were found during the APEC period. The contributions of secondary inorganic ions (SIA, including SO42−, NO3−, and NH4+) to PM2.5 were significantly lower during the APEC period (9–44%), indicating a combination of lower gaseous precursor emissions and a relative weak secondary aerosol formation. Ion-balance calculations indicated that the PM2.5 sample in the pre-APEC period was alkaline but was acidic during the APEC period. Relatively lower mean concentrations of EC (1.5 μg m−3), OC (10.5 μg m−3), secondary organic carbon (SOC, 3.3 μg m−3), secondary organic aerosol (SOA, 5.9 μg m−3) and primary organic aerosol (POA, 10.0 μg m−3) appeared during the APEC period. The average concentrations of NH3 and NO2 at all road sites were significantly reduced by 48 and 60% during the APEC period, which is consistent with clear reductions in satellite NH3 columns over Beijing city in the same period. This finding suggests that reducing traffic emissions could be a feasible method to control urban NH3 pollution. During the APEC period, concentrations of PM2.5, PM10, NO2, SO2 and CO from the Beijing city monitoring network showed significant reductions at urban (20–60%) and rural (18–57%) sites, whereas O3 concentrations increased significantly (by 93% and 53%, respectively). The control measures taken in the APEC period substantially decreased PM2.5 pollution but can increase ground O3, which also merits attention.

Responses of terrestrial ecosystems to decreased nitrogen (N) deposition has brought considerable attention. Soil organic carbon (SOC) turnover is an important parameter in the terrestrial ecosystem model and ecosystem management. However, how SOC turnover responds to decreased N deposition has not yet been evaluated. Here we addressed this issue by the comparison of the SOC turnover in the treatment that receiving high N addition for 4 years and then none for 6 years (48 g N·m−2·yr−1, N48-cessation) with that derived from the control treatment (0 g N·m−2·yr−1, N0) in Inner Mongolia grassland, China. In this study, 14C isotope technology was used to directly reveal SOC turnover time. Our results showed that SOC turnover time in the N48-cessation treatment had no statistical difference compared with that in the N0 treatment after 6 years of N cessation, indicating that its SOC turnover had recovered from high N enrichment. The reduction of SOC storage (274 g/m2) in N48-cessation treatment from 2010 to 2014 also proved this recovery. Moreover, we also found that the species richness and Shannon diversity index in the N48-cessation treatment were significantly lower than those in the N0 treatment. It indicated that the recovery of SOC turnover was faster than plant diversity in the grassland when high N addition was ceased. This study suggested that the grasslands experienced high N deposition should reduce grazing and mowing in order to increase soil carbon input and offset the negative effect of the rapid recovery of SOC turnover on soil C storage when N deposition was decreased.

Nitrogen (N) fertilizer-induced soil acidification in Chinese croplands is well-known, but insight in the impacts of different N fertilizer management approaches (fertilizer type and rate) on soil acidification rates is very limited. Here, we conducted a field experiment on a moderate acid soil to quantify soil acidification rates in response to N fertilization by different fertilizer types and N rates through monitoring the fate of elements (mainly nutrients) related to H+ production and consumption. Two N fertilizer types (urea and NH4Cl) and three N rates (control, optimized and conventional, 0/120/240 kg N ha−1 for wheat, 0/160/320 kg N ha−1 for maize) were included. Nitrogen addition led to an average H+ production of 4.0, 8.7, 11.4, 29.7 and 52.6 keq ha−1 yr−1, respectively, for the control, optimized urea, conventional urea, optimized NH4Cl and conventional NH4Cl plots. This was accompanied with a decline in soil base saturation of 1–10% and in soil pH of 0.1–0.7 units in the topsoil (0–20 cm). Removal of base cations by crop harvesting and N transformations contributed ~70% and ~20% to the H+ production in the urea treated plots, being ~20% and ~75% in the NH4Cl treated plots, respectively. The large NH4+ input via fertilization in the NH4Cl treated plots strongly enhanced the H+ production induced by N transformations. The low contribution of N transformations to the H+ production in the urea treated plots was due to the limited NO3− leaching, induced by the high N losses to air caused by denitrification. Increased N addition by urea, however, strongly increased H+ production by enhanced plant uptake of base cations, mainly due to a large potassium uptake in straw. Our results highlight the important role of optimizing fertilizer form and N rate as well as straw return to the field in alleviating soil acidification.

Distinct cropland acidification has been reported in China due to nitrogen (N) fertilizer overuse. However, the impacts on food production and thereby on food security are largely unknown. Yield losses in the period 1980–2050 were therefore assessed by simulating soil pH changes combined with derived pH-yield relationships for wheat, maize and rice. If the N fertilizer input continues to increase at 1% annually, the predicted average soil pH decline is about one unit and relative yield losses are expected to increase from approximately 4%–24% during 2010–2050. If the N fertilizer increase stops in 2020 (N2020), the expected losses are approximately 16% in 2050, which is comparable to a scenario of 100% crop residue return (100%RR). However, if 30% of the N fertilizer is replaced by manure N (30%MR), the losses reduce to near 5% in 2050. Soil acidification was predicted to reverse and expected losses are only 2.5% in 2050 in a combined scenario of N2020, 100%RR and 30%MR. Our results illustrate the potential food insecurity induced by cropland acidification and address the necessity of mitigation.

Background: Over fertilization with nitrogen (N) is considered the main driver of agricultural soil acidification in China. However, the contribution of this driver compared to other causes of soil acidification on intensive croplands has seldom been quantified under field conditions. Methods: We measured the fate of major nutrients, and calculated the related H+ production, based on the difference between inputs and leaching losses of those nutrients for a wheat-maize rotation system on a moderate acid silty clay loam soil in a two-year field experiment. Results: Topsoil pH decreased 0.3 units in the plots with conventional (current farmer practice) high N fertilization after two years, with a proton production of 13.1 keq H+ ha−1 yr.−1. No apparent changes in topsoil pH were observed in the plots without N application, in spite of a proton production of 4.7 keq H+ ha−1 yr.−1. Crop uptake was the primary driver of H+ production, followed by N transformation processes and HCO3 − leaching in both plots. Conclusions: Nitrogen fertilization had a relative small direct impact on soil acidification due to a very limited nitrate leaching, induced by large N losses to air by denitrification in this specific moderately acid soil, whereas elevated base cation uptake by crops induced by N fertilization indirectly had a relative large impact.

We applied the adapted model VSD + to assess cropland acidification in four typical Chinese cropping systems (single Maize (M), Wheat-Maize (W-M), Wheat-Rice (W-R) and Rice-Rice (R-R)) on dominant soils in view of its potential threat to grain production. By considering the current situation and possible improvements in field (nutrient) management, five scenarios were designed: i) Business as usual (BAU); ii) No nitrogen (N) fertilizer increase after 2020 (N2020); iii) 100% crop residues return to cropland (100%RR); iv) manure N was applied to replace 30% of chemical N fertilizer (30%MR) and v) Integrated N2020 and 30%MR with 100%RR after 2020 (INMR). Results illustrated that in the investigated calcareous soils, the calcium carbonate buffering system can keep pH at a high level for > 150 years. In non-calcareous soils, a moderate to strong decline in both base saturation and pH is predicted for the coming decades in the BAU scenario. We predicted that approximately 13% of the considered croplands may suffer from Al toxicity in 2050 following the BAU scenario. The N2020, 100%RR and 30%MR scenarios reduce the acidification rates by 16%, 47% and 99%, respectively, compared to BAU. INMR is the most effective strategy on reducing acidification and leads to no Al toxicity in croplands in 2050. Both improved manure and field management are required to manage acidification in wheat-maize cropping system.

Due to increasing global demand for crop production and energy use, more and more reactive nitrogen (Nr) has been generated and emitted to the environment. As a result, global atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition has tripled since the industrial revolution and the ecological environment and human health have been harmed. In this study, we measured dry and wet/bulk N deposition from July 2013 to December 2015 in a semi-arid grassland of Duolun County, Inner Mongolia, China. The samples of dry and wet/bulk N deposition were collected monthly with a DELTA (DEnuder for Long Term Atmospheric sampling) system and with Gradko passive samplers and a precipitation gauge. The measured results show that the annual mean concentrations of NH3, NO2, HNO3, particulate NH4+ (pNH4+) and particulate NO3− (pNO3−) in atmosphere were 2.33, 1.90, 0.18, 1.42 and 0.42 μg N/m3, respectively, and that the annual mean volume-weighted concentrations ofNH4+-N and NO3−-N in precipitation were 2.71 and 1.99 mg N/L, respectively. The concentrations of Nr components (including NH3, NO2, HNO3, pNH4+, pNO3−,NH4+-N and NO3−-N) exhibited different seasonal variations. Specifically, NO2 and HNO3 exhibited higher concentrations in autumn than in summer, while the other Nr components (NH3, pNH4+, pNO3−,NH4+-N and NO3−-N) showed the highest values in summer. Based on measured concentrations of Nr components and their deposition velocities estimated using the GEOS-Chem global atmospheric chemical transport model, the calculated annual mean dry deposition fluxes were 3.17, 1.13, 0.63, 0.91 and 0.36 kg N/(hm2•a) for NH3, NO2, HNO3, pNH4+ and pNO3−, respectively, and the calculated annual mean wet/bulk deposition fluxes were 5.37 and 3.15 kg N/(hm2•a) forNH4+-N and NO3−-N, respectively. The estimated annual N deposition (including dry N deposition and wet/bulk N deposition) reached 14.7 kg N/(hm2•a) in grassland of Duolun County, approaching to the upper limit of the N critical load (10–15 kg N/(hm2•a)). Dry and wet/bulk deposition fluxes of all Nr components (with an exception of HNO3) showed similar seasonal variations with the maximum deposition flux in summer and the minimum in winter. Reduced Nr components (e.g., gaseous NH3 and pNH4+ in atmosphere andNH4+-N in precipitation) dominated the total N deposition at the sampling site (accounted for 64% of the total N deposition), suggesting that the deposited atmospheric Nr mainly originated from agricultural activities. Considering the projected future increases in crop and livestock production in Inner Mongolia, the ecological and human risks to the negative effects of increased N deposition could be increased if no mitigation measures are taken.

Atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition has increased dramatically due to increased human activities since the industrial revolution. However, it is still unclear what the responses of soil nitrous oxide (N2O) is to long-term elevated N deposition in a temperate grassland. Here, we conducted an in situ field experiment to investigate these responses to long-term high N addition on a temperate steppe in Inner Mongolia, China, from April 2017 to October 2018. Soil N2O emissions significantly increased by long-term N addition, use of structural equation modeling (SEM) showed that topsoil (0-5 cm) NH4+-N content was the most important limiting factor for N2O emission. Our results indicate that long-term high N addition showed a significantly increase in N2O emission in this temperate grassland.

Nitrogen (N) deposition can profoundly alter soil N cycling of grassland ecosystems. Substrates and soil acidification are expected to modify soil N transformations in response to elevated N deposition. Here, we carried out 15N tracing studies to test the effects of N addition rates (low: 30 kg N ha−1 and high: 90/120 kg N ha−1) and soil acidification on gross N transformation rates using two typical Chinese grassland soils, an alpine calcareous soil and a temperate neutral soil. We found that N addition significantly increased the ratio of gross nitrification rate to gross ammonia immobilization rate (N/I) in both soils, but gross N transformation rates changed differently as a function of N addition rates and soil types. In the calcareous soil, N addition increased soil gross N transformations, largely due to mineral N substrates, SOC, TN and fungal dominance. In contrast, low N addition did not affect gross N transformation rates in the neutral soil, but high N addition significantly decreased gross N transformation rates. Although both SOC and TN were increased with N addition in the neutral soil, N-induced soil pH decline decreased gross N transformation rates. Our results indicate that the effects of N addition on grassland soil gross N transformations are highly dependent on mineral N substrates, SOC and TN. Soil acidification played a more important role than SOC and TN in gross N transformation rate changes in response to elevated N deposition. These findings suggest that the different changes of gross N transformation rates in response to N deposition and soil properties (e.g. SOC, TN and soil pH) should be integrated into biogeochemical models to better predict grassland ecosystem N cycling in the future scenarios of N deposition.

Soils below croplands and grasslands have acidified significantly in China since the 1980s in terms of pH decline in response to acid inputs caused by intensified fertilizer application and/or acid deposition. However, it is unclear what the rate is of pH decline of forest soils in China in response to enhanced acid deposition and wood production over the same period. We therefore gathered soil pH data from the Second National Soil Inventory of China and publications from the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) database in 1981–1985 and 2006–2010, respectively, to evaluate the long-term change of pH values in forest soils. We found that soil pH decreased on average by 0.36 units in the period 1981–1985 to 2006–2010., with most serious pH decline occurring in southwest China (0.63 pH units). The soil type with the strongest pH decline was the semi-Luvisol (0.44 pH units). The decrease in pH was significantly correlated with the acid input induced by atmospheric deposition and forest harvesting. On average, the contribution of atmospheric deposition to the total acid input was estimated at 84% whereas element uptake (due to forest wood growth and harvest) contributed 16% only. Atmospheric deposition is thus the major driver for the significant forest soil acidification across China.

Atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition has been shown to decrease biodiversity and change nutrient cycles in terrestrial ecosystems. However, our understanding of ecological responses to chronic N addition and ecological recovery from N enrichment to grassland is limited. Here we present evidence from an 11-year grassland experiment with a range of N addition rates (0, 30, 60, 120, 240, and 480 kg N ha−1 yr−1) in Inner Mongolia, China. Chronic N addition led to a reduction in species richness, Shannon Diversity Index and soil pH, and an increase in aboveground biomass, foliar N and soil mineral N. High N addition rates (240 and 480 kg N ha−1 yr−1) showed significant effects in the first and second years, which stabilized over time. Nitrogen addition at low rates (30 and 60 kg N ha−1 yr−1) took longer (e.g., ≥ 3 years) to achieve significant effects. The negative impacts of high N addition (480 kg N ha−1 yr−1) were reduced and species richness, etc., showed a limited but rapid recovery with the cessation of N addition. Our findings suggest serious and cumulative impacts of N addition on plant and soil communities but the potential for partial system recovery over time if N inputs decline or cease. Nitrogen (N) fertilizer application and atmospheric N deposition will profoundly affect greenhouse gas (GHGs) emissions, especially nitrous oxide (N2O) and methane (CH4) fluxes and ecosystem respiration (Re, i.e. CO2 emissions). However, the impacts of long-term N inputs and the often associated N-induced soil acidification on GHG fluxes in arid and semi-arid ecosystems, especially temperate grasslands, are still uncertain. An in situ experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of long-term (13-years) N addition on N2O and CH4 fluxes and Re from a temperate grassland in Inner Mongolia, northeast China, from April 2017 to October 2018. Soil pH values in the 0–5 cm layer receiving 120 (N120) and 240 (N240) kg N ha−1 decreased from 7.12 to 4.37 and 4.18, respectively, after 13 years of N inputs. Soil CH4 uptake was significantly reduced, but N2O emission was enhanced significantly by N addition. However, N addition had no impact on Re. Structural Equation Modeling indicated that soil NH4+-N content was the dominant control of N2O emissions, but with less effect of the decreasing pH. In contrast, CH4 uptake was generally controlled by soil pH and NO3−-N content, and Re by forb biomass. The measured changes in N2O and CH4 fluxes and Re from temperate grassland will have a profoundly impact on climate change.
